Mary J. Blige provides examples of the following tropes:
- Development Hell: Her Nina Simone biopic has been stuck here for more than half a decade.
- Dream Team: Collaborated with Lauryn Hill to sing "I Used to Love Him", from Hill's debut album.
- Signature Song: "Real Love" and "Be Without You".
