Master of Darkness

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

A 1992 videogame developed by SIMS, published by Sega, and the closest you would get to have a Castlevania on the Master System.

England, 1892. Jack the Ripper is around and killing people. A paranormal investigator(and psychologist) called Ferdinand Social receives a mysterious message while using an Ouija board, warning him about Jack the Ripper and Dracula and telling him to go to the River Thames.

And that's basically what you get before the game starts. Ferdinand then proceeds to kill a lot of supernatural creatures until he can find Dracula and kill him too.

Tropes used in Master of Darkness include:
  • 1-Up: They are represented by what it seems to be Ferdinand dolls/figurines.
  • Big Bad: All bosses work for Dracula.
  • Bottomless Magazines: The revolver is no different of all other projectile weapons and can also run out of ammunition.
  • Crouch and Prone: Ferdinand can crouch to fit through small spaces.
  • Demonic Possession: The second boss is a psychic female possessed by evil spirits.
  • Graceful Loser: Dracula actually tells Ferdinand where to go next after he kills Jack The Ripper.
  • Living Statue: The Wax Museum inevitably contain enemies of this kind. It's kind of easy to spot them though since they also all have a similar model. They also appear in later levels.
  • Serial Killer: Averted; Jack the Ripper isn't killing people out of compulsion in this game, but to use their bodies as sacrifice to Dracula.
  • Spikes of Doom: They don't kill Ferdinand but they do take one or two health points from him.
  • The Undead: Dracula is obvious, but you also fight zombies in the "Epitaph" level.
