Media Mirroring

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
That's not just some billboard. This is happening at a drive-in theater

A sequence where the main action is in some way echoed, mimicked, or reflected by the action taking place during a work inside the work transpiring at the same time. An exact one-to-one match is not necessary, but there must be a strong parallelism, and it is not uncommon for one to interrupt or complete the other with an accidentally appropriate interjection or observation.

Compare Coincidental Broadcast, Contrived Coincidence, Show Within a Show, Plot Parallel, Twisted Echo Cut and Recursive Reality (of the "nested stories" variety). Super-Trope of Suspiciously Apropos Music.

Examples of Media Mirroring include:

Live-Action TV

Music

  • The baseball game on the radio (announced by Phil Rizzuto) during the make-out session in the middle of "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meat Loaf.

Web Comics

  • Girl Genius has a scene when Tarvek Sturmvoraus argues with his father in a theatre, and on the words "if the mistress were here, she'd say -" he is interrupted by an actress screaming a very appropriate ending to this line. As it happens, not only in the role of said "mistress", but in the same voice. They both are stunned for a while.
  • Schlock Mercenary, when Ennesby quoted the order he cajoled out of Tagon, that he's "only supposed to be awakened if he is on fire". Thurl points at TV...

Western Animation

  • My Life as a Teenage Robot: "Future Shock". Tuck’s behavior matches up with the hero, Jenny’s behavior matches with the villain, which is an is probably an alien.
  • This happens in the Regular Show episode "Grave Sights". The park hosts a showing a 3d zombie movie. Being Regular Show, actual zombies show up and attack. The guests watching the movie think that the real zombies are just part of the movie. On at least one occasion actions taken by the park staff match the actions taken of those in the zombie movie.
  • This happens in the Legend of Korra episode "Night Of A Thousand Stars". Unusually, most of the match up between what is going on outside the The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South and what is going on in The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South are done by characters who acted in The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South.
  • While we visually see the movie, in The Amazing World of Gumball episode, The Spoiler, the movie's script at least loosely aligns with what is going on in the movie theatre.
