Mega Man Xtreme 2

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

A 2001 videogame, developed and published by Capcom. It's an Interquel between Mega Man X3 and X4.

The story of the game involves a phenomenon known as "ERASURE" that erases the programs of Reploids. Our heroes, Zero and X, are investigating this kind of phenomenon in a place known as Laguz Island with the help of a novice member of the Maverick Hunters, Iris. Soon Zero and X discover the island is filled with Mavericks they thought they had destroyed.

Not too long after, Zero and X meet a Reploid called Gareth that cryptically talk about "erasing the souls of Evil Mavericks". Proving Violence Is the Only Option, Gareth says that after Zero and X defeats eight "guardians" (actually, eight resurrected Mavericks) placed around the island, he will battle them and possibly give them the answers they search for.

With little to no clues about the "Erasure" phenomenon, Zero and X decide to take the violent nostalgia trip that Gareth offers to them.

Directed by Koji Okohara.

Tropes used in Mega Man Xtreme 2 include:
  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: Volt Catfish's stage is one of these.
  • Back from the Dead: Despite exploding them to pieces, X and Zero find and fight Mavericks from previous games, that were resurrected somehow.
  • Barrier Change Boss: After the player character reduces Sigma's health to a certain point, his mecha will be changing colours; these colours indicate which player character can damage his mecha form on these moments, with the mecha becoming completely immune to the attacks of the other.
  • Big Bad: Berkana seems to be the leader of the antagonists of this game at first. Sigma appears just after you defeat her and Gareth to prove this supposition wrong.
  • Blade on a Stick: One of Gareth's attacks involves throwing javelins from above the screen; the other is throwing javelins on the screen.
  • Blood Knight: Though she advises Gareth about how X and Zero are too strong to be fought at the same time, it's heavily implied that Berkana wants them to get stronger from the moment she is going to fight them, despite the fact that serves for no purpose in her plans.
  • Breath Weapon:
    • Two of Velguarder's attack involve this: one where fires flames, and another where he shoots ice from his mouth.
    • Both Isaz and Sowilo open their mouths to shoot projectiles at you. The upper head of the tank releases three spheres from its mouth in the player character's direction, and the lower head shoots a missile up that falls where the player was when it was released.
  • Co-Dragons: Berkana and Gareth are revealed to be serving Sigma all along, though Gareth seemed to be subservient to Berkana.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Sigma says Berkana has gone too far, but never explains how exactly, compared to his standards.
  • Everything's Better with Spinning: One of Launch Octopus's attacks involve spinning around creating a tornado to suck the player character in.
  • Evil Laugh:
    • Berkana lets out a "he he he"...
    • And Sigma a "ha ha ha", between others kinds of laughter.
  • Foreshadowing: The first original boss you meet has Sigma's symbol on its side.
  • Half the Man He Used To Be: Wire Sponge is bisected after the final hit on him after the fight against him during a Boss Rush.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: Sigma appears after you defeat Berkana and Gareth in Extreme Mode, revealing they were at the end working for him; he is actually kind of grateful that X and Zero finished them off, but fight our heroes regardless.
  • Interface Screw: One of Berkana's attacks is shooting projectiles that can affect X's ability to jump or shoot.
  • King Mook: Blast Hornet serves as this to the little hornet robots of his stage.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: At the end of the game, Zero and X decide to separate to take on the two main antagonists: X The Hero, fights the Big Bad Berkana, while Zero, The Lancer, fights The Dragon Gareth.
  • Man Behind the Man: Sigma, unsurprisingly, is behind Gareth and Berkana. The game doesn't dives deep in how exactly.
  • Mission Control: Iris serves as this for X and Zero.
  • One-Hit Kill:
    • The machine-generated tornadoes in Overdrive Ostrich's stages kill the player character instantly.
    • The same for the electrified wave in Volt Catfish's stage.
  • One-Winged Angel: As is also tradition, Sigma's second form is a bigger mecha that he uses as a shield for his real body.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Apparently the Reploids' DNA also make double duty as their souls.
  • Shifting Sand Land: Overdrive Ostrich' stage is part this, part Megaman-default metallic building. You do fight him on the sand. If you don't know why you would fight a bird on a desert, let us tell you that some ostriches live in the desert.
  • Strictly Formula: There's no good reason why X and Zero couldn't fight Gareth the first time they find him other than "fighting 8 bosses before going fighting the Big Bad is what happens in every Mega Man game".
  • The Dragon:
    • Gareth serves Berkana that seems to lead the antagonists(that are mostly resurrected Reploids).
    • After Sigma appears, it becomes obvious that both of them were serving him.
  • This Is a Drill: Isaz and Sowilo and the Maverick boss Tunnel Rhino use drills as weapons. While Isaz and Sowilo is a double-headed tank with a drill on its front, Rhino launches drills from his right hand towards the player character.
  • Under the Sea: Launch Octopus' stage, obviously.
  • Underwater Boss Battle: X or Zero battle Launch Octopus while both are surrounded by water.
  • Wolverine Claws:
    • Neon Tiger, though he uses his claws more to collide than cut the player character.
    • Sigma, as is tradition, uses his claws in the first part of his battle to cut or dive claws first on the player character.
  • Your Soul Is Mine: Despite having the the title of "Soul Erasers", Gareth and Berkana are actually stealing the souls of Reploids.
