Metal Fight Beyblade

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Metal Fight Beyblade (known in the West as Beyblade: Metal Fusion) is a Spin-Off of the Beyblade franchise and co-produced by the company that dubs it, Nelvana. It's the story of Ginga Hagane, an apparent drifter with no home. One day, he rescues a boy named Kenta Yumiya from the some members of the Face Hunters gang and the pair bond under the stars. The next day, Ginga's cornered by the entire Face Hunters gang and defeats them all. Then he has to go up against their leader Kyoya Tategami...

There is also a second season known as Metal Fight Beyblade: Explosion!. Nelvana has also announced a dub of Explosion which it calls "Beyblade: Metal Masters", which premiered on the U.S. Cartoon Network on August 20, 2011.

Tropes used in Metal Fight Beyblade include:

  • Abandoned Warehouse: The Face Hunters hideout is one.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The characters and stories are much more fleshed out than in the manga.
  • Adults Are Useless: The only adults that have appeared so far that are useful to the plot in ANY way are the Magnificent Bastard Daidoji/Doji and Ginga's deceased dad (or so we thought) in a flashback.
  • Alternate Universe: Word of God states that this series takes place in an entirely different universe than the original Beyblade.
  • Almighty Janitor: Ginga, Kyouya, Tsubasa and Yu are all shown as insanely strong when they are introduced, given their shown experience.
    • Masamune as well. Despite not having any real formal experience in Beyblade Tournaments, such as Battle Bladers, he is still ridiciously talented, and manages to defeat GINGA.
  • Anime Hair: The characters have a wide range of hair colors; some of them even have multicolored hair.
  • Badass Adorable: Ginga, Kenta, and Yu.
  • Badass Long Hair: Tsubasa. Da Shan too.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Kyoya and Tsubasa.
  • Batman Gambit: How Ginga defeats Phoenix. He uses Pegasus' Starburst Attack to trick Phoenix into countering it. This was a trick to goad him into using his own finisher, leaving Phoenix wide open for Pegasus' Storm Bringer which finished the match.
  • Battle Aura: Happens in the anime. The auras are also Color-Coded for Your Convenience.
  • Berserk Button: Just mention Ginga's dad and something bad about him in the same sentence.
    • Dangerously Genre Savvy: Ryuga used this to his advantage in order to successfully defeat Ginga in their battle and thus (whether accidentally or not) invoke a certain aesop about letting your anger/rage control you and cloud your judgement.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Doji and Ryuga in the first season. Though Ryuga turned out to be Eviler Than Thou and killed Doki by sucking out all his energy.
  • Bilingual Bonus: In the anime, Ginga grew up in a place called Koma Village, and this was kept in the dub. "Koma" is the Japanese word for spinning top, as well as what stemmed the word "Beigoma", which "Beyblade" is derived from, so it makes total sense that almost everyone in Koma Village is a Blader. While this is a minor example, it is significant nonetheless.
  • Bishounen: Hyoma. andHOW! [dead link]
    • Majority of the males in the cast may also count as this.
  • Body Horror: Occurs when Ryuga is possessed by L-Drago. We actually see his face extend forwards into a dragon-like snout.
  • Bulungi: The members of Wild Fang are decided in a tournament taking place in an unspecified African country, which seems to be a military dictatorship to boot.
  • Canon Foreigner: Madoka was only created for the anime. She doesn't appear in the manga (which predates the former).
  • Cast Full of Pretty Boys
  • Catch Phrase: Said by just about everybody in the show... "Let it rip!"
  • Cross-Popping Veins: How many times has Madoka done this?
  • Cute Shotaro Boy: Kenta and Yu. Ginga may also count since he's pretty short.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: This is Beyblade. You know this is invoked.
    • Benkei's interesting in that he refuses to acknowledge this has happened to him. Even after he saves Ginga from a collapsing ceiling in episode 4.
  • Devour the Dragon: Ryuga made a habit of doing this by absorbing his underlings' energy with L-Drago when they failed him. Doji didn't mind and quite a few times fed them to Ryuga. Doji ultimately meets this fate as well.
  • Eagle Land: Ginga demonstrates that he thinks of America as a type 2, through a small exchange between him and Masamune.

Ginga: You came from America?
Masamune: Yeah.
Ginga: That explains a lot.

  • Evil Laugh: Kyoya does quite a good one in episode 10.
  • Evolving Credits: After the thirteenth episode, the cheerful prologue was replaced by a dramatic introduction of the Big Bads. In addition, Madoka was added to the ensemble shot. Judging by the later inclusion of Hyoma and Yu, all the shadowed forms would be revealed as important characters as the series goes on. Then the credits change completely to accommodate the Tournament Arc that follows!
  • Expy: Metal Fight/Fusion's Blader DJ is a blatant expy of the original Blader DJ (DJ Jazzman in the dub) from the original series. While the two may seem similar, it's apparent that they're two different characters
    • Also, Masamune Kadoya is arguably this to Daichi Sumeragi from Beyblade: G-Revolution.
    • Kyoya too. Let's see: Great rivarly with the protagonist? Leader of a beyblade gang early on, but pulling a Heel Face Turn later in the series? Sounds a lot like Kai, huh?
      • Adding to the Kai parallels, he changes sides a lot.
    • Madoka is one of Kenny: she has goggles, a laptop, provides most of the explanations concerning Beyblade in general and (apparently) has a Beyblade of her own which she'd rather not use.
    • Star Breaker is one of the Psychics, from V-Force. There's a character named Zeo (who's pals with Masamune), although the real Zeo expies are Toby and/or Damian. Additionaly, Damian's Beyblade is based on Cerberus, which was Zeo's bit-beast. The Big Bad is even named Dr. Ziggurat.
  • Five-Man Band
  • Floating City: Dr. Ziggurat uses spiral energy to make Hades city fly. This ends up being the final battleground in Masters. Hilariously, it looks exactly like a beyblade.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Daidoji.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: In Gan Gan, Ginga is the Phlegmatic, Masamune is the Choleric, Tsubasa is the Melancholic, and Yu is the Sanguine.
    • Wang Hu Shong as well.
      • Meimei, the Sanguine, Chiyun, the Choleric, Da Shan, the Melancholic, and Chao Xin, the Phlegmatic.
  • Full Boar Action: One of the few things that scares Benkei: a wild boar.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Kyoya
  • Gratuitous Japanese: The NA toys hope you'll "RETTO ITTO RIPPU!" (In Japan, as with the previous incarnation, the phrase for starting a battle is "Go Shoot!"). Not funny, Hasbro.
  • Hand Behind Head: Ginga does this a lot. So does Kenta.
  • Heel Face Turn: Both Benkei and Kyoya become allies of Ginga by episode 11 despite being villains when first introduced. So do Tsubasa, Yu, and Ryutaro by the conclusion of the first season.
  • Heroic BSOD Ginga, for one, almost loses his blader spirit after utterly losing to Ryuuga. Poor guy.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Kyoya is Sai, Blader DJ is Sasuke, Ryuga is Seto Kaiba, Phoenix/Ginga's dad is Aizen and Doji is......well, look for yourself.
    • Tobio is Gaara, Tsubasa is Haku, Hyoma is Simon, Kenta is Blair, Benkei is Dynasmon, Yu is Nunnally, Masamune is Renton, Busujima is Trunks, Reiji is Robin, and Dan & Reiki are Negi
    • In a rather disturbing twist of fate, Yu Tendou is Maurecia. I wish I was kidding.
    • It's quite unsettling to watch the English dub if the voices of Bakugan Battle Brawlers characters are imbedded to your head...
    • The dub also has some veterans of the older Beyblade seasons, such as Brooklyn, Mathilda, Fernando/Kevin/Michael, Mariah, Kai, and even Mr. Dickenson
    • Ginga is Max. and Watarigani is Owen.
  • Hot Dad: Ryusei
  • Inconsistent Dub: Although most of the Beyblades retain their constellation based names, Tsubasa's Aquila beyblade was renamed "Eagle" for some reason. What makes this especially egregious is that the viewers can clearly see "Aquila" on the face bolt. While it's true that "aquila" means "eagle" in latin, "Aquila" is still the name of Tsubasa's beyblade in the original Japanese version.
  • It's Pronounced "GEEN-ga": As well as "REE-yoo-ga" (See Spell My Name with an "S" and Viewers are Morons below).
  • Karma Houdini: Russia's national team who stole information used it to rig arenas to cripple their opponents and then call it fair since 'the conditions are the same' when called on their bullshit, oh, and they also almost KILLED Masamune. All this so they could realize their dream to get sponsors so they could go to space, in the end they are left unpunished and in fact don't even get yelled at, and no one holds a grudge not even the kid they, again, almost indirectly murdered. They DO lose to Team Japan but they end up getting sponsors and going to space anyway.
  • Large Ham: Even if the series is a World of Ham, filled with Naming Your Attacks, Masamune is still very prominent

Masamune: I'm number one!!!

  • Limited Wardrobe
  • Lip Lock: Suffers from this quite badly.
  • Long Bus Trip: Sora hasn't been seen for a while now. We'll see if he comes back for the second season!
  • Lying on a Hillside: Ginga and Kenta shared a sentimental moment here.
  • Magical Computer: Madoka has some type of computer/laptop.
  • Market-Based Title: "Metal Fight Beyblade" in Japan is "Beyblade: Metal Fusion" in North America, with "Explosion" known as "Metal Masters".
  • Mouthy Kid : Masamune and Yu are the two most prominent examples in this series. Chiyun as well.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Hyoma, Kyoya and Tsubasa. There's a shocking amount of new eye candy for the female fans in Metal Masters. Da Shan Wang, Nile, Wales and Aleksei.
    • Chaoxin is a in universe example.
  • Multicolored Hair: Ryuga and Sora
  • No Pronunciation Guide: While the dub, Beyblade: Metal Fusion, isn't hit with this too often, when it is it hits hard. the primary example is the protagonist Ginga, which in english is said as if the first letter is J and not G. Combined with how the dubbers spell his name "Gingka", and you have something really strange. A secondary example is the true Big Bad, Ryuga, for which they seem to have taken a page from the misconception of how to say the name of Ryu from Street Fighter, and the inconsistency of how the dub later correctly pronounces the name of Ginga's father who they renamed Ryo
    • Adding to Nelvana's list of name pronunciation blunders is Tobio "Captain Capri" Oike, who's last name is pronounced "Oh-ee-keh" in Japanese, but mangled into "Oh-ai-kee" in the dub.
  • Not Quite Dead: Ginga's father Ryusei had somehow survived magma and guided him from a distance as Phoenix!
  • No, You: Ginga and Masamune...
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother is not mentioned and is father was killed when Daidoji and Ryuga stole the forbidden Bey Lightning L-Drago
  • Parrot Exposition: Benkei is especially prone to this.
  • Phoenix One mysterious character is named Phoenix, who uses a Phoenix beyblade. He's also Ginga's Not Quite Dead father!
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Ginga's eyes turn blood red when Ryuga insults his father.
    • Averted with Sora. His eyes turn red when he activates his 'blade's special attack, but he's (apparently) a good guy.
    • And played entirely straight with both Tsubasa and Ryuuga when they're possessed by their dark side/ L-Drago, respectively.
  • Reset Button: After Ginga's first encounter and subsequent defeat at the hands of the mysterious blader Phoenix, Phoenix crushes his Bey Pointer, and he's forced to regain all of his points to enter Battle Bladers using his new Digital Power Launcher
  • Screw Destiny: Ginga versus the fortune-telling Ryutaro Fukami. Ryutaro says he knows Ginga's destined to lose. Ginga shouts back with confidence- "If that's my destiny then I'll just have to change it!!"
  • Shut UP, Hannibal: Ginga gives a pretty epic one to Reiji in their battle. It's also extremely effective, causing Reiji to lose it and undergo a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Forcibly invoked in the North American release of the anime and toys. All promotional materials for the franchise render "Ginga" as "Gingka".
  • Slasher Smile: Ryuga and Mizuchi love flashing them before they defeat anyone!
  • Serious Business: Spinning tops are very serious business. Though in this world, they're also capable of causing massive destruction and, in L-Drago's case, sucking the life force out of people.
  • Snakes Are Evil: Mizuchi! Mizuchi! Mizuchi!
  • Super Prototype: Galaxy Pagasus is Storm Pagasus' prototype, but a lot more powerful. This is because it was too powerful for the ones who made it to control, so they sealed it away. Ginga manages to tame it though.
  • Those Three Guys: Osamu, Akira, and Takashi
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Hikaru and Madoka, though the latter's also a Wrench Wench. They're also the only major female characters in the series!
  • Tournament Arc: You all knew it was gonna happen.
  • Tsundere: Benkei in general (non-romantic)
    • Hikaru also qualifies.
  • Unstoppable Rage: In his battle with Ryuga, Ginga becomes increasingly enraged until Ryuga insults his deceased father, which makes him completely snap. Somewhat Subverted though, as Ryuga defeats Ginga because of that uncontrollable rage.
  • Verbal Tic: Watarigani's constant interjections of "crab" and "snap-snap", etc.("gani" in the Japanese version); Benkei's "B-b-b-bull!
  • Viewers are Morons: Apparently, Nelvana still thinks viewers don't understand Japan enough to pronounce certain names correctly, hence we have "JIHN-ga" (not to mention a "k" added to his name, becoming "Gingka"), and "Rye-OO-ga".
    • Really? Because this viewer thought that "Rye-OO-ga" was the perfect name for a blader with Lightning L. Drago. An unintentional Bilingual Pun?
    • Also, while the North American toys have the Japanese spellings of the characters and Beyblades, Hasbro seems to figure that since most "Americans" can't make heads or tails of Japanese anyway, they probably won't notice the Japanese rendering of "RETTO ITTO RIPPU" ("Let it rip"), which is only used in North America. In Japan, they say "Go shoot" when they want to start a Bey battle. They even have the "Gasher" Beyblade rendered as "Gasshah"; it's known as "Cancer" (as in the crab constellation) in Japan.
  • Western Zodiac: In this show, the Beyblades are based on constellations. Hence, the presence of the 12 signs.
    • Hyoma has Aries, Benkei has Taurus, Dan and Reiki have Gemini, Tetsuya has Cancer, Kyoya has Leo, Teru has Virgo, Yu has Libra, Busujima has Scorpio, Kenta has Sagittarius, Tobio has Capricorn, Hikaru has Aquarius and Ryutaro has Pisces.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?: Well, it is part of the Beyblade series
  • White-Haired Pretty Boy: Ryuga and Tsubasa. The latter also doubles as a Badass Long Hair.
    • Hyoma as well.
  • Worf Barrage: Hikaru's Bey's special move, Aquario Infinite Assault, never works against strong new opponents.
  • You Fail Physics Forever: Specifically, in the episode "Shine, Virgo!", they say that dancers put their arms out to go faster. In all actuality, you pull in to go faster. Try it with a simple rolling chair, or even spin around your room. You get the opposite effect by pushing out.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Oh Crystal Dragon Jesus......both Kyoya and Kenta have green hair, Benkei has purple hair, Hikaru and Hyoma have blue hair, Ryuga's hair is white and red......and the list goes on.
  • You Killed My Father: Ryuga was directly responsible for the death of Ginga's father Ryusei ("Ryo" in the dub), even though he didn't outright kill him.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Madoka is grade A.
