Metamorphosis (manga)

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Metamorphosis (Henshin) is a 2013 hentai manga.

Saki Yoshida is shy, friendless student. After graduating from middle school, she decides to make more friends, transforming her own image. Soon, after her first day in school, an older guy called Hayato flirts with her and Saki falls head over heels for him. Before she realizes it, she has lost her virginity and is getting addicted to drugs given to her by her boyfriend. And things only get worse from here...

Inspired by Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis (hence the name and dark plot, and similar theme about transformation). Infamous for its ending, that is known for making hentai readers don't feel that turned on anymore. At all. Maybe, because, it's a little too realistic.

Written and drawn by L Shindo, serialized by Comic X-Eros on Japan. Published digitally by FAKKU Books on November 10, 2016.

Tropes used in Metamorphosis (manga) include:
  • Compensated Dating: Saki engages on this to gain more money to buy fashion accessories. Let's just say the limits between "dating" and "prostitution" are crossed quickly.
  • Could Have Avoided This Plot: Saki could have prevented much of the horrible ordeal that ensues in the story had she simply chosen to walk away early on. Or had other people tried to act remotely altruistic rather than abuse or scorn her.
  • Dark-Skinned Blond: As part of her proverbial transformation, Saki tries to make herself into this. Eventually, she not only becomes increasingly unrecognizable to her old schoolmates. But as time passes, her attempts to look fashionable devolve into looking like a cheap prostitute and eventually, a homeless one.
  • Deconstruction: The manga is arguable one to more than a few hentai doujin tropes, showing in graphic detail what would actually happen in real life, especially when taken to their logical conclusion.
  • Downer Ending: Saki dies on a dirty bathroom along the baby in her belly, forgotten and alone.
  • Drugs Are Bad: Saki's growing addiction to more and more drugs don't helps her at all, allowing her to be abused or giving "service" without never being paid. It reaches such a point she chooses drugs over cash as payment for her "services". She untimely dies of an overdose of cocaine.
  • Driven to Suicide: Saki decides to take an lethal dose of cocaine at the end of the story.
  • Dying Dream: Saki has one of living with her infant daughter on a better future.
  • Fan Disservice: It doesn't take long before the sex scenes become much more off-putting than anything else.
  • Friendless Background: Saki has one as result of shyness. Trying to get friends only sets her on an worse path though.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Averted, and Saki feels very, very guilty about it.
  • Horrible Judge of Character:
    • Saki evidently makes more than a few bad choices on who to trust or turn to over the course of the story, which only get her even further into trouble. Her fling with Hayato, who shows himself to be an obvious bastard, is just the tip of the iceberg.
    • Saki's mother judges her husband was "seduced" by Saki and scolds her over the incestuous acts between the two instead of, you know, calling the police.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Whether it's the people exploiting Saki or the cold disdain, apathy and outright disgust from others (even her old classmates), similarly to its inspiration the manga paints society at large as being complicit in her worsening plight. As well as her demise, a victim of a cruel, uncaring world.
  • It Gets Worse: The whole story gets worse for Saki. And it never gets better for her.
  • Love At First Sight: And portrayed very negatively. Saki kisses, has sex and consumes drugs with a guy she met for the first time on the same day.
  • Meganekko: Saki at the beginning of the story.
  • Plot with Porn: The story is very heavy on the (dark) plot, with the porn intended to shock rather than titillate.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: Near of the end, Saki looks at herself on the mirror of a bathroom and crushes it in impotent rage.
  • Reality Ensues: On top of being dark, the manga is infamous for how it tries to be a little too realistic in showing the consequences of Saki's actions and proverbial transformation.
  • Parental Incest: Saki's father rapes her, over and over again.
  • Slut Shaming: Saki finds her school desk vandalized with offensive language for having sex with boys on her school after being blackmailed.
  • Teens Are Monsters: A group of teenagers beat up and rape a homeless, pregnant Saki at the end of the story.
  • Your Cheating Heart:
    • Saki prostitutes herself with an older man, cheating on her boyfriend Hayato, but by this point Hayato is such an obvious bastard that we doubt anyone cared. And, in fact, he barely cares about her having sex with other boys in her school later. Or with anyone that gives her money for sex, by the way.
    • Saki's dad, technically, by raping his own daughter.
