Metroid: Other M/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • The trailer shown at E3 2009 for Metroid: Other M could be a crowning moment of sheer awesome all on its own. Samus THROWS a Kihunter. By its TAIL.
    • Just before it: Tackling an alien to the ground by holding it in a headlock, then shooting it in the back of the head, at point blank.
      • And she does this ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME.
        • Every freaking MOMENT if gameplay in Other M counts! Sense move, overblast, etc. And Concentration! Sumus can now HEAL HERSELF AND RESTORE GODDAMN MISSILES THROUGH SHEER FORCE OF WILL.
  • Any scene involving Anthony, but especially the Ridley scene... BOTH of them.
    • Yes Anthony, we'll remember you for a long time after shooting the Space Pirate commander himself to save Samus.
  • Super Metroid's ending, IN GLORIOUS 3D!
    • Especially the little touches that make it completely clear that the resulting destruction of Mother Brain was a Mama Bear Roaring Rampage of Revenge. The following line clinches it:
  • The Ridley fight and the buildup to it. So awesome the game gives you the Super Missiles and Plasma Beam for the fight itself and an Accel Charge/Missile Tank in the room just before it.
  • Samus "Authorizing" the Screw Attack, Gravity Suit and Power Bomb on her own. Each time she does is it's own CMoA by itself! The Screw Attack? "Any objections, Adam?" (especially cathartic if you weren't fond of the Authorization system in the first place) The Gravity Suit? "Oh, I'm gonna get sucked into the vacuum of space... yeah, that's not gonna work for me, have fun Zebesians!" And the Power Bomb? See below.
  • The ending of the final boss fight against the Queen Metroid. With the entire station having jarred to a stop and knocked both Samus and the queen to the floor, Samus gets back up and starts blasting the queen with missiles. The queen gets back up, and Samus locks onto her mouth. And fires the Grapple Beam, launching herself into the queen's stomach. In morph ball form, with her health draining away extremely rapidly, what could Samus possibly do in this situation? Lay the power bomb that Adam expressly forbade her from using. The screen whites out. When it returns, the entire room has had its shit wrecked and there is absolutely no sign of the Queen Metroid aside from green bloodsplatters. And that's merely another reason why Samus kicks ass.
  • This Troper is not a fan of Other M, but thought the introduction of Ridely as a Creepy Child was a very cool moment.
    • Thanks to Nintendo Acres, this troper can't help but laugh at the concept of Little Birdy.
  • "No objections, right, lady?" Also a Tear Jerker.
  • The lava-whale fought right after getting the Grapple Beam is a high contender for Best Boss Ever. There's something incredibly cool about seeing Samus whip that bad boy out of the lava like it's just some puny little trout, then kicking its ass. Doesn't hurt that it was, for me, the only boss that didn't either fall into a button-mashing pattern or Guide Dang It.
  • A moment of more subtle awesome: the first parts of the cutscene with the real Madeline Bergmen actually works. Samus responds to Bergmen's terror in a calm, measured, faintly awkward way, backing off to explain herself in a way that actually sells the scene.
  • Because of the new Overblast and Lethal Strike moves, Samus can now tear enemies apart with her bare hands. Of course, you have to time it right for them to work.
  • Adam Malkovich's Heroic Sacrifice. Full Stop.
    • Except it ended up being completely pointless and he crossed the Moral Event Horizon seconds before doing it.
      • It was not pointless. Sure, he turned out to be wrong about it stopping MB herself, but he did succeed in getting rid of the ice-proof Metroids. That act still meant something. And as for Moral Event Horizon, remember why he shot Samus. This is Samus Aran we're talking about; as her own subsequent actions prove, there was no other way to keep her from stopping him. Besides, all he did was incapacitate her briefly. Not nice, maybe, but not exactly that horrible a thing, either.
        • Samus Aran? The woman who had spent most of the game obeying his orders just because she respected him? The woman who took serious damage before activating her Varia suit, because she didn't want to disobey his orders? Yes, I can see how shooting her with a possibly-deadly weapon makes so much more sense than just yelling at her to stop, and explaining the situation.
        • What's worse is that Samus wouldn't even have needed to fight the nigh-invincible Metroids in Sector Zero. All Adam had to do was cause enough superficial damage to the section to cause it to auto-eject. Gosh, if only there were someone with super-speed enhanced combat armour and delayed-response Power Bombs that she's been explicitly ordered not to use specifically because they could cause damage to the station. Oh, wait. It's not like Samus has never had to outrun a destruct sequence. It's like a bi-monthly occurrence for her.
          • And let us not forget the live metroid hovering over her when this happened.
          • I guess Your Mileage May Vary here.
