Miyuki

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Miyuki Wakamatsu: A good morning kiss. Would you like one more?
Masato Wakamatsu: (lamenting it was just on the forehead) Idiot! This is Japan! Brothers and sisters here don't do that! Did you forget!?

Miyuki: I've been living overseas too long.
Miyuki, Masato and Miyuki, after Masato wakes to a forehead kiss from Miyuki

A manga from 1980-1984 by Mitsuru Adachi, Miyuki is the story about Masato Wakamatsu, and the romantic feelings he has for two women, both of whom are named Miyuki. One is a girl from his class, Miyuki Kashima, and the other is Miyuki Wakamatsu, his sister who is not related by blood. It is very lighthearted, and was made into an anime in 1983.

Tropes used in Miyuki include:
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Masato declares this to his stepsister during her wedding to his best friend. Despite this, it still comes off rather sweet.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After failing his reexamination, Ryuuichi is attacked by someone with two kitchen knives. In what is either a Crowning Moment of Funny or Crowning Moment of Awesome as well, he tells the attacker that he doesn't need to buy a kitchen knife, dodges being stabbed in the back without even TRYING, and then beats the guy up . . . and accuses him of inconsiderately asking to cook for him.
    • He then goes on to prevent a man's suicide because he was going to jump himself, and then goes on to rescue two people from a fire, becoming an Accidental Hero.
  • Disappeared Dad: Miyuki and Masato Wakamatsu's father is never shown. Every time he is about to come home, he just goes back to work, going as far as working during his daughter's wedding, and Adachi even lampshades this by stating he hasn't even drawn him yet.
  • Fan Service: By the boatload, especially whenever Masato is at his highschool.
  • Flirty Stepsiblings - Not Blood Siblings: Pretty much the point of the whole story is Masato deciding whether or not his feelings towards his stepsister are appropriate or not, especially since he is also in love with Miyuki Kashima. Masato and Miyuki Wakamatsu decided that it was, and get married.
  • Fridge Horror: This might be more of Values Dissonance, but Masato Wakamatsu declared love for his stepsister in front of everyone he knew. At her wedding. To his longest, dearest friend. ... Eeeeeeeep.
  • Hooked Up Afterwards: Masato's childhood friend Sawada Yuuichi and now ex-girlfriend Miyuki Kashima.
  • Incestuous Casting: In-Universe: Masato Wakamatsu and his stepsister Miyuki Wakamatsu in a school play.
  • Names to Know in Anime: Hiromi Tsuru (Miyuki Kashima), Katsumi Toriumi (Masato Wakamatsu), Kaneto Shiozawa (Yoshio Muraki), Kei Tomiyama (Yasuhiro Kashima), Katsuji Mori (Kenji Kousaka), Tessho Genda (Torao Nakata)
  • Panty Thief: Panties get stolen back and forth like its their mission, and in one chapter Yasujirou actually does a case where he is trying to bring justice to a panty thief.
  • Pervert Dad: Yasujiro Kashima unintentionally sniffs his daughter's panties in the manga, and in the anime, eerily comments on how hot his daughter has become after watching her change.
  • Self-Deprecation: Mitsuru Adachi appears in many of the chapters briefly to comment on how odd or cliche the plot is, and almost invariably receives a beating from his editor before getting back to creating the story.
  • Stalker with a Crush: How many of Masato's rivals appear.
