Mother 3/Characters

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Lucas

Cheer up!

The protagonist of the second half of the game. He starts as a crybaby, but after his adventure, he grows a lot more mature.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Claus goes missing early into the game, leaving Lucas to wallow in sadness for the years until he goes to find the Needles.
  • Badass Adorable: Despite starting out as a Lovable Coward and looking like a pretty average "sweet little boy" in general, Character Development that occurs later on in the game causes him to become (both physically and emotionally) one of the franchise's strongest characters since Ness. He also fights the game's Post Final Boss alone.
  • Big Damn Heroes/Moment of Awesome: Comes out of nowhere when Salsa, Kumatora and Wess are cornered by Pigmasks and calls the mother Drago to completely destroy the Pigmasks surrounding them.
  • Break the Cutie: The game really goes out of its way to do this to Lucas. If you listed all of the traumatic things that happen to him over the course of the story, you'd more or less have a summary of the plot of the game.
  • Carry a Big Stick: He uses sticks as weapons, just like his father (Flint).
  • Character Development: His transformation from a Lovable Coward into a "Ness 2.0" in Chapter 4; it even gets mirrored in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • Combat Medic: Continues the series' trend of the main protagonist being the game's primary healer. Lucas has the largest arsenal of healing abilities of the four party members as well as the strongest physical attack.
  • Cosmic Plaything: His mother dies, his brother goes missing and turns up as an evil cyborg, and his father goes nearly insane with grief. Even the dog is upset about it.
  • Farm Boy: His father is a shepherd, even!
  • Good Is Old-Fashioned: Even as Tazmily changes, Lucas sticks to the old ways of the village, much to everyone's frustration.
  • Hair of Gold: Representing his innocent, pure-minded personality.
  • Hurting Hero: He gets his family utterly torn apart by Porky and is forced to watch as his world becomes a Polluted Wasteland due to what Porky does to it. To make matters even worse for him, he also ends up having to kill one of the Magypsies and fight a soul-less and mechanized version of his own brother twice.
  • In the End You Are on Your Own: When you reach the Masked Man in front of the seventh needle, he knocks out everyone in your party except Lucas.
  • Kid Hero: Following the tradition of Ness and Ninten before him, he's implied to be around 12 by the time he picks up the role of Main Protagonist and fights the Pigmasks.
  • Lovable Coward: Until his Character Development kicks in during Chapter 4 and turns him into a new Ness, at least.
  • Magic Knight: Has a great deal of healing, shield and buffering moves, but also deals that most damage in the party and can take quite a bit of damage.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Downplayed; in combat, Lucas is definitely vastly stronger than Kumatora when it comes to physical stats, but Kumatora is an Action Tomboy while Lucas is a shy and sweet little boy.
  • Missing Mom: She is found dead halfway through the first chapter, and not long after we meet her for the first time too.
  • Mushroom Samba: Complete with a large dose of Nightmare Fuel.
  • Never Accepted in His Hometown: Other characters in the game seem to rather-frequently mock him for his cowardice during the game's first three chapters, and from Chapter 4 onward, he becomes a massive target for the Pigmasks that have taken over his hometown and is also-rather-frequently mocked for not wanting to participate in his world's new consumerism craze. In fact, even the Post Final Boss that Lucas encounters at the end of the game is his own brother.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother is killed by the Mecha Drago. Angst ensues. Later, his father spends years looking for his "missing" son out in the mountains, and it's implied he hasn't spoken to Lucas much in that time.
  • Plot Induced Stupidity/Gameplay and Story Segregation: Hey, look, the Pigmasks are arriving to pull the needle we just beat That One Boss for. Might as well stand here and let them set up!
  • Psychic Powers: As per tradition, Lucas is Psychic like the Main Protagonists before him, complete with his own unique Special PSI Attack, PK Love.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Lucas is blue to Claus's red.
  • Shrinking Violet
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Lucas is timid and gentle, while Claus is more outgoing and excitable.
  • Simple Staff/Carry a Big Stick: His weapons of choice range from either yo-yos, sticks, staves or baseball bats.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Lucas and Claus are anagrams of each other.
  • The So-Called Coward: He becomes almost as strong (and brave) as Ness during Chapters 4-8.
  • Unlikely Hero: Claus' shirt is blue and yellow—the same color as Ness's and Ninten's before him. He also acts like a Hot-Blooded hero, capable of ridiculously selfless and suicidal actions on behalf of the people he cares about. Everything about him is deliberately engineered to scream "hero!"... but it's timid Lucas who gets saddled with the position instead.

Claus

...make SURE you eat the core!

Flint

I wonder what's under that hat? Nothing. He's bald as a bean!

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Badass: To say the least, he is an absolutely definitive example of one of these.
  • Badass Longcoat: His design in the scrapped N64 version. This was most likely removed to make animations clearer.
  • Badass Normal: In a world where the Mooks wield rayguns and the heroes wield psychic powers, he's still more than capable of making his way on his quest with nothing more than a good block of wood.
  • Bald of Awesome: That's right; he's bald as a bean, and he's also by far the manliest and physically strongest of the game's protagonists..
  • Carry a Big Stick: Primarily uses sticks as weapons.
  • Determinator: In addition to being Made of Iron, he becomes so determined to avenge his wife's death and find Claus that it causes him to seemingly forget that Lucas (or anyone else, for that matter) even exists.
  • Deus Angst Machina: Chapter 1. The forest gets set on fire, a friend of his is injured, his wife Hinawa is killed, he has a freakout that leads to him getting thrown in jail, and one of his sons tries to avenge Hinawa and is (presumably) killed. All of this within the space of a day or so.
    • Iron Woobie: Much of what applies to Lucas also applies to him.
  • Dumb Muscle: When it comes to combat, at least; he has the overall-lowest IQ stat out of all of the game's playable characters and has literally no combat "talents" other than his own sheer strength, but said strength is easily comparable to Ness' in Earthbound in offense terms and actually appears to be significantly superior to it in defense terms. And then there's the fact that he made it all the way through the game's final area by himself, survived PK Love Omega twice in a row, and also defeated a Mecha-Drago by himself...
  • Happily Married: To Hinawa.
  • Heroic BSOD: After the news of Hinawa's Death is relayed to him.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: In the process of getting his revenge for the fact that the Mecha-Drago has killed his wife (and also nearly killed one of his kids), he attempts to kill said Drago itself (in front of its baby, no less); luckily, however, Alec manages to talk him out of it just in time to prevent him from delivering the final blow.
  • Hurting Hero: He lost his wife, lost one of his sons, got less screen time than Salsa, et cetera...
  • Irony: He is a cowboy who is named after a type of gun (flintlock) but doesn't actually use guns in combat.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Until you make him angry, at least.
  • Made of Iron: Special mention goes to when he takes two PK Love Ω's for Lucas. Although he's knocked out for a bit, he eventually gets right back up as if nothing happened.
  • Nice Hat: Flint wouldn't be Flint without his signature cowboy hat.
  • Papa Wolf: A deconstruction; he gets so torn up about Claus' disappearance that he spends most of the game neglecting his other son in his rampant search for him.
    • During the final battle between Lucas and the Masked Man (who in reality is a brainwashed Claus), Flint will try and protect Lucas, taking two rounds of heavy damage for him.
  • Parental Neglect: To Lucas.
  • Please Keep Your Hat On: Not to say he doesn't look cool without it.
  • Rancher
  • Rated "M" for Manly: He looks and acts like both Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood at the same time and is also strong (and determined) enough to make it nearly all the way through the game's final level by himself.
  • Sexophone: His attack/combo instrument, although it's probably supposed to represent the blues.
  • Stealth Pun: His attack/combo instrument plays the blues.
  • Supporting Protagonist: He briefly assists (or, more accurately, is assisted by) Duster and Boney during Chapter 1.
  • Taking the Bullet: Flint takes a PK Love Omega for Lucas in the final battle - twice. Flint being taken out by the second one removes Lucas' unwillingness to attack.

Boney

Woof woof! (I can take you for a walk if you'd like, Lucas.)

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Badass Adorable: Unlike King, this giant puppy actually stays with Lucas until the end of the game (and is controlled by the player during combat).
  • Enemy Scan: His sniff ability. Some enemies either have no scent or one that Boney can't handle.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: During the Mushroom Samba on Tanehineri/Tanetane Island, Boney's the only one that won't follow you into the hot spring. And for good reason...
  • Fragile Speedster: Can outright be upgraded to a Lightning Bruiser if you're skilled with the combo system.
  • Heroic Dog: Basically King if King wasn't too lazy to become a permanent party member.
  • Team Pet

Duster

Tonda gossa.

Yokuba/Fassad/Locria

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Arab Oil Sheikh: Fassad looks like one, in any case.
    • It's also worth noting that 'Fassad' is an Arabic word that means 'corruption'. It's also a pun on Façade (no, not the game). And it's not even official.
  • Asshole Victim: Him falling off of the top of Thunder Tower at the end of Chapter 5 is barely even mentioned by any of the game's other characters after its occurrence, and to say the least, he definitely deserved said fate.
  • Back from the Dead/Killed Off for Real: After falling from Thunder Tower, he's brought back to life with two musical horns attached. Much later, after the third encounter, he plummets into the sewers and either dies from drowning or disappearing when his Needle is pulled.
  • Badass Mustache: He has a remarkably Mario-esque one that eventually gets horns added onto itself.
  • Bad Boss: Towards Salsa the monkey.
  • Black Sheep: Of the Magypsies.
  • Card-Carrying Villain
  • The Corrupter: Serves as this to the entire population of Tazmily. And he enjoys his job very much.
  • Crutch Character: In Salsa's chapter, though Fassad only helpes out when he feels like it.
  • Cyborg: His New and Miracle forms, with the Miracle one barely even being recognizable as him.
  • Death by Irony/Disney Villain Death/Karmic Death: Subverted; his Death By Banana Peel doesn't actually kill him, instead nearly killing him and resulting in him being reconstructed into his New and Miracle forms.
  • Dirty Coward: Especially when he hides behind Salsa during combat encounters in Chapter 3.
  • The Dragon: At least until the Masked Man shows up.
  • Evil Laugh: "Nwehehehehehehehehe!"
    • That's one "Nwe" and eight "he"s.
  • Face Heel Turn: He's one of the Magypsies.
  • Fat Bastard: Almost as much of one as Porky, in fact.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: After you defeat Miracle Fassad for the last time, he falls into a sewer, too wounded to so much as move. Assuming his immortality keeps him alive, he's trapped down there until his needle is pulled.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He seems like a nice guy at first, but in Chapter 3, you realize that he is actually downright despicable.
  • Gonk: His Miracle form, in which his New form's horn-stache becomes large enough to cover his entire torso.
  • Guest Star Party Member: A notable one, as it's likely that he'll be the one doing all the damage while Salsa is taking all the hits (and doing his best to disable enemies so he doesn't get hit).
  • Hate Sink: You will learn to hate him throughout Chapter 3.
  • Hypocrite: He repeatedly punishes Salsa for "misbehaving" while acting like a total dick himself, and he also calls the non-modernized version of Tazmily Village "incredibly un-civilized" while being quite-arguably the most brutish and obnoxious character in the entire game (and, of course, scarfing Luxury Bananas down like a total pig).
  • Hypocritical Humor: In Thunder Tower, he says that Lucas is "the definition of a moron flying into a flame"; once he and Lucas reach the top of said tower, he accidentally causes his own surprisingly non-permanent Disney Villain Death by slipping on one of his own banana peels, then gets reconstructed into a cyborg that flies using literal fire that its jetpack generates. Lucas' first battle against said cyborg takes place in a volcano.
  • Irony: He has the mustache of Mario but has the personality of Wario.
  • Jerkass: Fassad corrupts Tazmily village for his own profit while torturing an innocent monkey.
  • Kick the Dog: To Salsa. Over. And over. And over. It won't take you long to feel sorry for the poor monkey.
  • Make an Example of Them: Anyone who doesn't play ball and purchase a high quality Happy Box gets their house torched by lightning.
  • Meaningful Name: Fassad's name in the Japanese version was "Yokuba", which comes from the Japanese word for "greed". His name in the fan translation comes from the Arabic word for "corruption" and coincidentally, it sounds like the word "façade". Fassad could also be something of a reference to Lier X. Agerate, a minor character from EarthBound.
    • It's a miracle that Fassad is even still alive when Lucas encounters his Miracle form in New Pork City.
  • Musical Spoiler: His horns the second and third time around play a somewhat messy version of the Magypsy's theme whenever he talks.
  • No One Could Have Survived That
  • Pet the Dog: His pet rat.
  • Prophetic Name: The Locrian mode, the scale that Locria is named after, is also known as the 'Diabolus in Musica', a Latin phrase meaning 'Devil in Music', in reference to its dissonant tone. This is likely the reason why the name "Locria" was chosen for the traitorous Magypsy.
  • Recurring Boss
  • The Reveal: While you're heading through the Empire Porky Building, you come across a Magypsy's shell home. Inside, you find several banana peels, a pair of musical horns and Fassad's clothing.
  • Running Gag: Fassad isn't afraid to stop whatever he's doing to eat a banana then throw the peel on the floor. This turns out to be his downfall at the top of Thunder Tower.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: Wouldn't YOU be happier with a Happy Box?
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Fassad may be a chode, but he's an effective teammate (a lot more than Porky or Thomas), and a lot stronger than Salsa. Itoi intentionally wanted to provoke this feeling in players themselves.
  • Stout Strength: Despite how fat he is, he's a very effective ally and two of the game's strongest bosses.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Luxury Bananas. They even heal him for more than they heal your party members.
  • Turncoat: See The Reveal above.
  • Villainous Crossdresser: Inverted -- the rest of the Magypsies are all psychic crossdressing guardians for good, except the comparatively conservatively-dressed Locria/Fassad.
  • Villainous Glutton: Heavily implied by his physical build and his obsession with Luxury Bananas.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: After he falls of Thunder Tower, the Pigmasks rebuild him into a cyborg who has horns sticking out of his nose.
