Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Examples of Mugging the Monster in Newspaper Comics include:

  • The Far Side: This cartoon: "Why...yes...thank...you...I...would...like...a...knuckle...sandwich."
  • Garfield, so many times:
    • Garfield attacks a chicken that he thinks is helpless in this strip.
    • In another strip, Garfield climbs up a tree where a bird is singing, saying, "Ready or not, here I come!" Then there are sounds of a ferocious fight, and Garfield is thrown out of the tree, beaten to a pulp. "He was ready..." groans Garfield.
    • In another, he meets a French poodle, and laughs his head off at it; in the last panel, having been beaten up, he says, "Gosh, haircuts are deceiving..."
    • In yet another, he meets a very old dog next to a sign that says, "Beware of the Old Dog". "What are you going to do, gum me?" he snarks to it. He finds out quickly that "the old geezer is lethal with a cane..."
  • In Peanuts, Lucy learns the hard way not to insult the school building or mock people who talk to it.
