My Hero Academia/Characters/U.A. High School

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

U.A. High School

School Faculty & Staff

Principal Nezu

Debut: Chapter 12 (Manga), Episode 4 (Anime)
Quirk: High Spec
Voiced by Yasuhiro Takato (Japanese), Jerry Jewell (English dub)

The principal of U.A. High and a Pro Hero who led the school to its current success. Nezu has a pleasant but eccentric and persistent personality, which helps fit his role as principal. He shows dedication as both a hero and an educator. Nezu is also self-aware about his appearance being an animal which he often jokes about. He is an infrequent instance of an animal possessing a Quirk. The Quirk in question, High Spec, grants him superhuman intelligence.

Principal Nezu exhibits the following tropes:
  • Animal Superhero: A given, since being a Hero is required to have any kind of job in U.A. High.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Shown during the Final Exams Arc, he can act rather insidious due to be experimented on by humans in the past.
  • Character Filibuster: According to All Might, he has a thing for veering off into unrelated topics when he gets carried away by his friendly disposition so much that he can't stop talking.
  • Dean Bitterman: Completely inverted; he's the principal of U.A., is exceedingly polite and friendly, and loves to chat with his subordinates and pupils.
  • Freudian Excuse: The grudge he has against humans stems from when he was young, used as a caged lab animal for horrific scientific experiments. One often wonders how he shows any restraint at all.
  • Funny Animal: He's a very rare case of an animal with a Quirk, which gives him superhuman intelligence, an anthropomorphic physique, and the ability to talk. However, exactly what species of animal he's supposed to be is debatable, as he seems to have traits of a mouse, bear, and dog.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a very large scar over his right eye, as a remnant from the times when he was still being experimented on.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name is a play on the Japanese word for rat, "nezumi", which goes hand-in-hand with his appearance.
  • Nice Shoes: He wears sneakers with his suit, instead of formal loafers.
  • Intellectual Animal: His Quirk makes him one, complete with an anthropomorphic stature.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's presented himself as a wise, prudent and deliberate leader.
  • Secret Keeper: Alongside Recovery Girl, he's initially the only person in U.A. who knows that Midoriya inherited his Quirk from All Might.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Always seen wearing a fine suit. Most likely a custom-tailored one, because of his proportions.
  • Super Intelligence: His Quirk, High Spec, grants him unparalleled intelligence, perception, and comprehension, greater than a human's. He is capable of coming up with intricate strategies, as evidenced when he used a wrecking ball and a crane, he can cause precise damage far from the cranes reach by using buildings like dominoes and completely trounced Kaminari and Ashido in their final exam. The aforementioned Quirk also grants him flawless leadership skills as a principal or U.A. High School, which has helped it become one of the top Hero schools in Japan. He also has an excellent memory, which includes a grudge against humanity for being experimented on him. This tragic memory can interfere with his thought processes.
  • Token Non-Human: While there are many students and teachers with Quirks that make them animal-like, they're all actually human. Nezu is the only animal in the faculty.

Toshinori Yagi - All Might

The Symbol of Peace
Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)
Quirk: One For All (formerly)
Voiced by Kenta Miyake (Japanese, TV Anime), Tessho Genda (Japanese, Vomic), Christopher Sabat (English dub, TV Anime)

The highest-ranked hero in the world and a pillar of hope and justice for heroes everywhere to follow. After an intense battle with a dangerous super-villain, he can only be his heroic self for up to three hours a day. After he hits his time limit, he becomes a lanky, skeletal man who constantly coughs up blood. Only a select few staff at U.A. know about his predicament, and even fewer know the true nature of his Quirk. At the start of the manga, Midoriya proves himself to All Might and inherits "One For All". He then acts as a mentor toward the young hero through his education at U.A. High School. Yagi is also the Heroics Teacher at the high school, where he is supposed to focus on all his students but tends to Midoriya more often than not.

Tropes exhibited by All Might include:
  • 100% Heroism Rating: All Might is, far and wide, considered the greatest, most powerful Hero to have ever graced Japan. Even some villains admire and respect him. He's incredibly physically strong, very fast and above all of that, genuinely kind-hearted, with a streak for valiantly defending the weak.
  • The Ace: All Might is a straight example of this and continues to be a unique one, even though having been severely injured gave him a time limit on his powers. Gran Torino deconstructs this, noting that he took to One For All much more easily than Midoriya did, which caused his teaching methods (which worked for him) to be less effective for his protege.
  • Achey Scars: The large scar he has on his body from where All For One permanently crippled him while doing serious damage to his organs. Notably, it only seems to ache when he is facing All For One or when he is witnessing events similar to how he got his scar. He can be seen gripping the area on his chest where he got injured while watching the dramatic fight between Endeavor and High-End.
  • Affectionate Parody: Of classic superheroes.
  • All-American Face: While he's Japanese, he's definitely a send up to this type of character. He's blonde with blue eyes (typical anime depiction of a western foreigner), massively buff when powered up, wears a costume with a red, white, and blue color scheme, and constantly goes on about justice. Hell, one of his attacks was called Texas Smash.
  • All a Part of the Job: He has a lot of wisdom and experience when it comes to being a hero, so him being a teacher is fitting.
  • Almighty Janitor: No pun intended. He's the number one ranked hero in the world! He also has a critical weakness from a previous battle and can only hold his hero form a few hours a day, the rest of the time he's a sickly looking man.
  • Badass Abnormal: His Quirk is special even among all the Quirks in existence in that it can be passed down from one person to another outside of simple genetics. It gets more abnormal when you find out that he has been injured and is only able to hold his heroic form a few hours each day, and the rest of the time he takes on a weakened form. But the biggest abnormality about him is that by the time of the story, 80% of the population has been born with a Quirk, but he and later Midoriya are among the 20% NOT born with a Quirk, but both receive it via it being passed down.
  • Badass Baritone: In the anime adaptation, be it Japanese or the English dub, All Might has a deep, melodious voice that goes hand-in-hand with his grandiose appearance.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Sometimes wears one as a teacher or when he talks to the press.
  • Badass Teacher: At first, he seemed like he was just mentoring Midoriya, but he also became a regular teacher at U.A. High.
  • Beware the Nice Ones Is almost always smiling and is the type to always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. The keyword is almost. If you somehow manage to get him to stop smiling, you know you're in for it.
  • Big Good: The number 1 hero in the world! A pillar of hope and justice for the world, with many aspiring to follow his example. Fittingly enough, he's thus the only one who matches the Big Bad in terms of power.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy Subverted since he's not remotely evil, but his eyes are black with brightly glowing blue irises.
  • Blood From the Mouth Happens to him frequently in his weakened form.
  • Body Horror: His weakened form is extremely emaciated and constantly vomiting blood.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: To a tee: he has the physique, the raw power, and the grandiose demeanor.
  • Brains and Brawn: When he was paired up with Sir Nighteye, he was the brawn of the duo.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Since giving Midoriya One For All, he finds that he's slowly losing his power over time, and it will eventually stop working completely. This finally happens at the end of chapter 94 after using the last vestiges of One For All to finally KO All For One.
  • Calling Your Attacks In reference to how he's based on silver-age western superheroes, he shouts out the names of American states and landmarks. He doesn't always get it completely right, though.
  • The Cape (trope) Definitely. Almost to the point of parody.
  • Catch Phrase "I'm here!/I have arrived!" while making a Dynamic Entry and "Plus Ultra!" when trying to be inspiring or when showing off.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome Played partly for laughs, but prior to the U.A. villain invasion, All Might steps in to diffuse a tense hostage situation, then moved on to stop a hit and run driver, and then... well, his commute to work ended up taking up all of the time he had that day for the use of his powers.
  • Color Motif As seen above, All Might's hero costume contains the primary colors: blue, red, yellow, and white.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: His most powerful and most dangerous ability is an incredibly powerful punch he calls "United States of SMASH!"; he's only seen using it once, in the final battle where he uses it to flatten All for One. Note he does this in his de-powered form, while badly wounded. One can only imagine what he could do with this move when he was in his prime.
  • Death Glare He gives off an incredibly potent one, whether it be against villains who threaten his students, or even when he is acting out the part of a villain in Class 1-A's exercise against Bakugō and Izuku. When you see that glare, run.
  • Deconstruction: All Might is a deconstruction of what would happen if there was some uber strong Big Good type hero out there inspiring others and single-handedly keeping most of the bad guys in check just by his very existence. Most heroes believe he sets the standard too high and like Endeavor, become resentfult of always being compared to him. When he can't do his job any more and has to retire, society is in a bit of a crisis as the bad guys who weren't acting up because he was out stopping them are now crawling out of the woodwork. Also, while Toshinori is a genuinely good person and deeply cares about others, always putting on the facade of a perfect/ideal hero makes him constantly question his self-worth and whether or not he is actaully a decent guy at heart.
  • Deuteragonist: While the series as a whole is a Coming of Age story for Deku, All Might's influence and character drive the story just as much as Deku's journey does.
  • Eagle Land Predominantly because of his The Silver Age of Comic Books traits, he tends to exhibit signs of the first type. For example, his workout plan for Midoriya invokes the classical American Dream in its name... and the notion that those born with nothing, can one day achieve the greatest success if they work hard to earn it. Additionally, as mentioned, most of his attacks Theme Naming for states or major U.S. cities, typically "X Smash".
  • Engrish In the anime, he peppers his sentences with English words and phrases.
  • Expy Of Golden Age and Silver Age Flying Bricks. His ethos is almost straight-up Superman, the nature of his Quirk and backstory is rather similar to Captain Marvel (DC), and his appearance could perhaps best be described as "Miracleman with Hair Antennae."
  • A Father to His Men
    • He technically has only one man, Midoriya, but their relationship is very akin to a father and son. All Might often treats and trains Midoriya in a manner similar to how a stern but loving father would do to his son, considering that Midoriya's real father never appeared in the whole series, and only mentioned once, All Might often border being a Parental Substitute.
    • He tried to pull this off with Bakugō once, with predicable results.
  • Fun Personified: He always wants to make sure everyone is in a good mood and often cracks hammy humor to that end.
  • Game-Breaking Injury All Might suffers from this five years before the main story, he took a devastating hit from an unknown villain, which nearly killed him. While he survived thanks to numerous surgeries, his powers were disrupted such that he can only use them three hours a day. When he powers down, he looks like an emaciated husk of his former self that constantly keeps coughing up blood. Regardless, he keeps up his hero duties, with only Midoriya and a few of the top officials knew about what happened, as he doesn't wish for people to lose faith in heroes like him.
  • Gratuitous English: Frequently as part of his Large Ham tendencies.
    • All Might: [in Japanese] Oh my... oh my... GOODNESS!
  • Handicapped Badass: The original battle with All for One inflicted terrible injuries on All-Might, requiring numerous surgeries simply for him to function, costing him his stomach and one lung, leaving him, in his usual form, a frail and gaunt man who continually coughs up blood. He can only assume his heroic superpowered form for about an hour a day. Still, he managed to continue his heroic career and hide his condition from the public for years.
    • Retired Badass: Having fully depleted his own quirk in the final battle with All For One, it seems he has fully become this Trope.
  • Hair of Gold All Might's mighty hair is blond.
  • The Hero His status as the Number 1 hero in the world makes him a symbol of peace and justice to the world. Or so he thinks. Lots of villains see him as their biggest threat, and even some heroes are jealous of his status and power.
  • Heroic Build: His muscular form, obviously.
  • Hour of Power Thanks to his injury, he can only tap into his full strength for a few hours a day. After giving Midoriya his One For All, this time gradually grows even shorter. All For One explains that this is because All Might is now exclusively using the remnants of One For All as opposed to the full power he once had before and the more he uses it the weaker his power becomes. At the end of his fight with All For One in chapter 94, All Might has now permanently used up the last remaining dregs of One For All.
  • Humble Hero: Despite his grandiose appearance and hammy demeanor, All Might doesn't concern himself with praise, recognition, and accolades and mainly cares about helping those in dire need and bringing them hope.
  • Incurable Cough of Death As a result of his Game-Breaking Injury, he is practically emaciated when his powers are not in use and is prone to hacking up blood.
  • I Work Alone Subverted. Sir Nighteye's insistence on becoming his sidekick eventually led All Might to accept his help.
  • Large and In Charge: While not the officially agreed-upon leader of the heroes, he is the one they all follow in a crisis, and according to his profile in the manga, he stands 7'2 in his heroic form, and weighs 255 kg (562 lbs) of solid, heroic muscle.
  • Large Ham: If his bold outline and loud personality didn't make it obvious, he is constantly spouting speeches about heroism and how it's important for him to be a symbol of peace.
  • Leeroy Jenkins Gran Torino calls him as the "punch first, ask later" type.
  • Legacy Character It's eventually explained that he himself received "One For All" just as Midoriya did. Thus far, nine people have had the One for All quirk.
  • Lightning Bruiser Very few people can keep up with his sheer strength and speed. His only weakness is the time limit that his muscle form has.
  • Married to the Job: While now an older man and fairly emaciated due to his injuries from fighting All For One, in his younger years when he could claim "I Was Quite a Looker"; however he was so dedicated to being a hero and suffering Chronic Hero Syndrome that he never had the chance to meet a partner or start a family. One of the reasons he so protective of Midoriya is that he starts to see him as the son he never had.
  • Meaningful Name His surname contains the Kanji for "eight", referring to him being 8th wielder of One For All. It also has the character "tree/wood" in it, which likely refers to him being the pillar that currently upholds society as it is now.
  • The Mentor He tries to make Midoriya his successor and gives him his power. With U.A.'s help, All Might may find the true and worthy successor, but he hopes it will be Midoriya.
  • My Greatest Failure: Discussed in chapter 70, there has never been a situation in which he hasn't made the outcome better when he was there. All Might is for all his speed and strength still only a man, he can't be everywhere and for every situation he made better, there were hundreds he could do nothing for, simply because he wasn't there. This is where being The Paragon is a double-edged sword, for all that he inspires to make others like him, he is seen as The Hero of the world, so when he doesn't show up to save the day it can breed resentment.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being an Affectionate Parody of the hokey American superhero type, All Might actually genuinely lives up to the tropes and even gives them a real feel. He's kind-hearted, noble and compassionate, and will valiantly defend the common man, unconcerned with praise and recognition.
  • Non-Standard Character Design To go with his Large Ham personality, he is drawn in a thicker outline and has more shading than everyone else. He specifically has character design elements associated with the comic book creator Rob Liefeld, including a variant of the "Youngblood's disease" as his eyes are often hidden in heavy shadow or appear to be glowing. Ironically this also means despite being most inspired by a comic book art style it means he looks a more like a villain or morally dubious individual than he is intended to. His "true form" is also very different from everyone else but in a more conventionally cartoonish and lanky sort of way.
    • A few students even acknowledge this when he enters class for the first time.
  • Not So Different Reveals to Midoriya that he used to be Quirkless himself before getting "One For All" and had pretty much had the same drive he did when he was younger.
  • Nothing but Skin and Bones: All Might's true form is positively skeletal.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Sort of. "All Might" is his hero name; but even in-universe nobody knows his real name, Toshinori Yagi, except for Gran Torino.
  • Out-of-Character is Serious Business: When he arrives during the assault on USJ, Midoriya quickly points out that All Might is not smiling. Even though he's in hero-mode, he isn't smiling. This is All Might we're talking about here; he is always smiling in hero-mode. That he isn't smiling makes it clear how he feels about the villains trying to get at him through his students. He also becomes incensed beyond belief whenever All For One is brought up, let alone when he faces him in person.
  • Papa Wolf As the villains who attacked Class 1-A found out, trying to hurt his students is an easy way to get on All Might's bad side.
  • The Paragon All Might isn't the "Symbol of Peace" just because he's incredibly strong, but because he's devoted to inspiring the good in others. Many of the world's other heroes and heroes-in-training aspire to follow his example.
  • Passing the Torch How "One For All" works. It's a unique Quirk that is nurtured and passed down from generation to generation. All Might even talk about it as literally passing the torch.
  • Perpetual Smiler In his powered-up form, he nearly always has a giant grin on his face, though this is usually an act in order to reinforce the idea that he's an unassailable symbol of peace and justice. See also Stepford Smiler.
  • Psychologist Teacher Midoriya isn't the only student All Might tries to mentor after joining U.A.'s faculty as Bakugō and Todoroki also bring out his mentor side. He is also shown to be very encouraging to pretty much all his students.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: While he generally prefers to slug his opponents with all his power, All Might can speed up his attacks to a frightening level, as demonstrated against the U.S.J. Nomu.
  • Recoil Boost New Hampshire Smash.
  • Renowned Selective Mentor Passing One For All is done very selectively, considering its power. On top of that, All Might has very strict standards for taking on an apprentice. But of course, this is all done in secret with only a few in the know.
  • Showy Invincible Hero What he is In-Universe. All Might is the strongest hero who is known for always winning his battles and saving everyone once he appears as the Symbol of Peace.
  • Signature Laugh: One of the first heralds of his arrival is a loud, energetic belly laugh to reassure anyone who's in trouble that everything is fine now that All Might is here for them.
  • Sink-or-Swim Mentor If you think Aizawa is bad, All Might is even worse. Any poor soul paired up with him as their teacher/mentor for the day should expect a merciless beating. Doesn't matter if you're only in your first year, All Might will take you as seriously as he would a villain.
  • Sir Swearsalot In the English dub at least, All Might actually have the foulest mouth relative to all the characters. He isn't constantly swearing, but he is the only one who ever says "shit".
  • Sobriquet Known as "The Symbol of Peace".
  • Spin Attack Oklahoma Smash.
  • Stepford Smiler Puts on a brave face in hero-mode to live up to his reputation as a symbol of justice, but is all too aware that he's a fallible human being and that the day is rapidly approaching when he can't be a hero anymore. Chapter 92 reveals that he does this on the encouragement of his mentor, who argued that the people he rescues have been through a lot of trauma, so he should smile so as to save their hearts as well as their lives.
  • Super Strength One For All. The strength boost also provides Super Speed and In a Single Bound.
  • Theme Naming: All his known special techniques are named after American states and cities, including California, Carolina, Detroit, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, and Texas. Midoriya later expands this by adding Delaware and Manchester.[1]
  • Tragic Keepsake "One For All" acts as this as it was entrusted to him by his now-deceased mentor and friend Nana Shimura.
  • Up to Eleven His fight with Nomu had Nomu able to match him blow for blow at 100% of his power, so he pushes himself beyond 100% and completely curbstomps Nomu.
    • All Might: You may have heard these words before, but I'll teach you what they really mean! Go beyond! PLUS! ULTRA!!!
  • Vague Age How old is All Might? Mid-twenties, thirties, possibly approaching forty? The manga never makes it clear and the fact that he looks like a teenager in his weaker form only adds more fuel to the fire.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie While he claims this is the case, he has both dodged questions on multiple occasions and asked someone to lie on his behalf on at least one occasion.
  • World's Strongest Man The highest-ranked hero. Even though he has weakened a bit in the last years, he still managed to keep the top spot.
  • Wrong-Context Magic: As far as is known, "One for All" is the only Quirk that the user isn't born with, and the only Quirk that can be given to someone else.
  • Your Size May Vary All Might's neck in his normal form ranges from normal, to noticeably long, to grotesquely long.

Shōta Aizawa - Eraser Head

Erasure Hero
Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Erasure
Voiced by Junichi Suwabe (Japanese), Alex Organ (English dub, Season 1), Christopher Wehkamp (English dub, Season 2 onward)

The homeroom teacher of Class 1-A. Though he looks like a lazy, unkempt mess, he has strictly high standards while teaching, and is a dedicated pro Hero himself. His Quirk, Erasure, allows him to nullify his opponent's control over their Quirk. This ability comes with two caveats: firstly, Erasure can only be in effect as long as Aizawa doesn't blink, and secondly, using the Quirk gives him dry eyes.

Tropes exhibited by Eraser Head include:
  • Anti-Magic: He can stop people from using their Quirks if he's looking at them unless the Quirk in question is a "mutant" type.
  • Apathetic Teacher: Played With. He's only genuinely apathetic to schooling matters that don't involve the strengthening of Quirks. When it comes to the aforementioned, however, he is very stringent and will do his best to make sure his students are at the top of their game.
  • Author Avatar: Sort of. Horikoshi claims Aizawa embodies his faults, everything he doesn't like about himself. So then, Aizawa is a caricature of Horikoshi in a bad mood.
  • Badass Baritone: In the anime, Aizawa boasts a pretty deep voice that lends itself very well to his serious attitude and overall proficiency as a Hero.
  • Badass Teacher: Try to harm his students, and you'll be on the receiving end of all the power he's got.
  • Brilliant but Lazy: He takes naps in a sleeping bag in the middle of classes he's supposed to be teaching. Still, he's one of the finest teachers at U.A. has to offer.
  • Brutal Honesty: He's completely blunt about what he considers a major drawback for someone, though he never does it out of malice. He does it because he wants to bring out the best in his students.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: He introduces himself to Deku and Ochaco by talking to them while inside a sleeping bag. He also frequently teaches from aforementioned sleeping bag. He also expelled an entire class before 1-A because they didn't meet his standards.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: He strongly resents the attention U.A. gets from the media and does his best to keep them at bay. To boot, he stays out of the limelight when it comes to his own Heroics.
  • Cool Shades: Aizawa wears a particular set of golden, slit goggles to conceal his eyes while operating with his Quirk.
  • The Cowl: Being a Foil to the jovial, extroverted All Might, he's a pro Hero who tends to avoid the public eye and operates mostly at night.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wears a very dark-colored suit, has black, messy hair, and is overall a major downer, but he's unambiguously a Hero.
  • Fights Like a Normal: His Quirk temporarily gets rid of Emitter and Transformation class Quirks. It is useless, however, against Mutant class Quirks. Either way, he has to use weapons and martial arts if he wants to bring down an opponent himself.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Suffice to say, he looks a lot more presentable when he shaves, ties his hair in a ponytail, and dresses in a fine suit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may be a grouchy, frumpy killjoy who has incredibly high standards, but his heart is very much in the right place.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Despite being Midoriya's homeroom teacher, he's not one of the select few informed about the fact that All Might granted Midoriya his Quirk.
  • Messy Hair: His long hair is very often left unkempt and frumpy; he occasionally ties it into a ponytail.
  • Nerves of Steel: Even in the most dire situations, Aizawa maintains a stoic composure.
  • Perma-Stubble: He's almost always seen with a five-o'clock shadow on his face, and only shaves for press events.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes glow red when his Quirk activates, which is part of the reason he wears goggles to conceal it.
  • Secret Test of Character: Says the student with the lowest performance in physical tests will be expelled. He also discusses it, saying how obvious that trope can be used to get the best out of people without the pressure of real danger.
  • Stern Teacher: If it means you'll learn how to be an awesome Hero, Aizawa will definitely put you through the wringer.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: By his own admission, Aizawa has dry eye, but his Erasure Quirk needs his eyes to be open to take effect.

Hizashi Yamada - Present Mic

Voice Hero
Debut: Chapter 3 (Manga), Episode 3 (Anime)
Quirk: Voice
Voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Japanese), Sonny Strait (English dub, season 1), David Trosko (English dub, season 2 onward)

A DJ-themed pro Hero, U.A.'s English teacher, and a radio host in pastime. His Quirk, "Voice", allows him to heighten the sound pressure level of his voice beyond the pain threshold for offensive purposes.

Mic displays the following tropes:
  • Anime Hair: His hairstyle is a ludicrously tall pompadour swept up like a broom. It turns out that this is a wig that's part of his hero costume, and that his actual hairstyle is normal, long hair.
  • Bad Bad Acting: He's so insanely over-the-top and hammy that you can't not think of him, even if he's trying to put up a front.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may be goofy and happy-go-lucky, but he's a pro Hero and he has the skills to prove it. He's also the first person to point out the possibility of there being a traitor on the U.A. campus.
  • Big Word Shout: He uses this as an offensive method, shouting "YEAH!!!" while using his Quirk.
  • Civvie Spandex: His Hero costume consists of a black leather biker outfit and a small speaker underneath his chin.
  • Combat Commentator: He provides running commentary on the U.A. sports festival, including the one-on-one duels that lead up to the finals.
  • Cool Shades: These orange glasses are part of his Hero costume, but he doesn't wear them on a normal day.
  • Dumbass DJ: He's hammy, over-the-top and loud to the point of being obnoxious, but he's much smarter than he lets on.
  • Gratuitous English: Being U.A.'s English teacher and a very boisterous fellow, he can't help but pepper his dialogue with random English sentences.
  • Large Ham: Suffice to say, you'll know he's here even before he appears, because he's just too loud and boisterous to be avoided.
  • Large Ham Announcer: He fills this role during the entrance exam and the U.A. Sports Festival. Out-of-character, it's his voice actor who provides narration for each time a new Quirk wielder is introduced.
  • Life of the Party: Fun-loving, boisterous and a complete extrovert, he tries to bring out the best in his peers through socializing with them. He also loves a good drink.
  • Narrator: Downplayed. The only time he does O/S voiceover is whenever a new character is introduced. There, he breaks down their name and Quirk power.
  • No Indoor Voice: Moments where he lowers his voice are incredibly rare. His Quirk's power actually thrives on this, as it amounts to becoming so loud it injures his opponent's ears.
  • Personality Powers: Mic has the power to make his own voice louder, which goes hand in hand with him being a boisterous, loud extrovert.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He absolutely hates insects, arachnids and centipedes; he's scared to death of them.

Nemuri Kayama - Midnight

R-Rated Hero
Debut: Chapter 12 (Manga), Episode 8 (Anime)
Quirk: Somnambulism
Voiced by Akeno Watanabe (Japanese), Elizabeth Maxwell (English dub)

A heroine with a BDSM theme and the self-titled “18+ heroine”. She first appears as a referee for the U.A. Sports Festival and teaches Modern Hero Art History. Her Quirk is “Somnambulism”, a pheromone she can exude that lulls her foes to sleep and at her mercy. She has a larger role in the prequel manga, Vigilantes.

Midnight exhibits the following tropes:
  • Action Girl: Obviously a requirement for a pro.
  • Anime Hair: Her long hair is styled like a conifer tree.
  • Attention Whore: Not only is this the reason she dresses as she does, she once thought doing so would start a trend and convince people to be more accepting of it. It clearly didn't work.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Her Quirk - and the way she uses it - seems far more fitting for The Vamp than a heroine.
  • Berserk Button: Don't interrupt her when she's talking, and never mention her age.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Averted. Despite the jokes made on it, she is not villainous in any way, not even anti-heroic, just perverted.
  • Chained by Fashion: Fitting her theme, she wears - uncuffed - handcuffs on each wrist.
  • Christmas Cake: She flies into a rage (ending in a Cat Fight) when Mt. Lady makes a crack about her age. (She's 31.) Doesn't help that being labeled as such isn't good for her reputation.
  • Cool Teacher: She's quite friendly and positive towards her students. She wholeheartedly supports them when they do something well, and readily offers constructive criticism without being too harsh.
  • Double Entendre: A lot of her dialogue. For instance, from the Final Exam Arc:

Midnight: If someone runs away from me screaming, my sadistic side starts to throb so much I can't help it.

  • Dominatrix: Her costume could not be plainer. Domino Mask, Combat Stilettos, and a riding crop all extenuate the theme.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: On her days off, and she tends to order the most potent of cocktails while doing so, such as tequila. Even worse, she's been known to mix some potent Gargle Blasters while tipsy, and even worse, loves to share them.
  • Harmful to Minors: And proud of it! The "18+ Heroine" moniker is one she herself thought up.
  • Hot For Student: Averted, but she tends to make quite a few jokes that suggest it. And the way she lulls Sero to sleep during the Final Exam arc would have been pretty creepy had you not known it was a drill.
  • Hot Teacher: A tall, conventionally attractive woman with a BDSM style Hero get-up who teaches Modern Hero Art History.
  • Knockout Gas: Her Quirk. Inhaling it promptly puts opponents to sleep, with the caveat that it takes effect more quickly with men.
  • Marshmallow Hell: As seen in Vigilantes, if one dose of her Quirk doesn't bring a foe down, she'll deliver a second dose this way.
  • Meaningful Name: Her actual name is kanji for “ "fragrance" and “sleep”. Midnight, on the other hand, can refer to her darker nature or for the time most people sleep.
    • Non-Indicative Name: On the other hand, “Somnambulism” is the medical term for sleepwalking, not what her Quirk does.
  • Most Common Superpower: Obviously. The aforementioned Attention Whore accusations and catfight with Mt. Lady happened on a talk show where the host asked them if this "power" was truly necessary.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her overall style revolves around this trope, because her Quirk demands exposed skin to take effect. She mitigates this by having a very thin, skin-tight suit under her corset that she can rip easily.
  • Required Secondary Powers: She's the only person who is immune to her Quirk's power, which is a necessity.
  • Sensual Spandex: Exaggerated. Not only is her costume very form-fitting, but very thin as well, so she can easily tear it and let her Quirk out.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Even without her high-heel boots, she's 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) high, which is taller than most women.
  • Stripperiffic: Currently she downplays it, her Nude Colored Costume gives an illusion of the Trope. Formerly, however, her costume was so skimpy it led to the government passing heroine-decency laws!
  • Terror Hero: “If you take one breath, it'll be over for you.” Midnight is a heroine who counts on foes being afraid of her, and most are.
  • Whip It Good: Given that she's a BDSM-styled Heroine, this is a necessary weapon.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Her hair is dark purple.

Class 1-A

Izuku Midoriya - Deku

Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)
Quirk: One For All (officially registered as Super Power); Quirkless (formerly)
Voiced by Daiki Yamashita (Japanese), Akeno Watanabe (Japanese, child), Justin Briner (English dub, TV anime)

The protagonist of the story. Formerly a Quirkless, timid boy who was an outcast among his peers, his life changed when All Might, his favorite Hero and the top Hero in Japan, saved his life from a villain. When displaying a tremendous amount of courage when one of his peers was in danger, he's seen as worthy of becoming a hero by All Might, who wishes to make him his successor and grant him his Quirk, "One For All". One For All allows him to stockpile enormous amounts of strength, but his body isn't accustomed to its overwhelming power. This gradually changes for the better as we follow Izuku throughout the series.

Tropes exhibited by Deku include:
  • Achilles' Heel: One For All, as used at its full power by Midoriya, is incredibly powerful - the caveat is that he ends up breaking whatever part of the body he channels the Quirk to.
  • Action Hero: An action hero in training, but still a worthy example.
  • Adorkable: Midoriya's endearing clumsiness is through the roof. He's very easily flustered by unfamiliar situations, imposing types of people, his favorite childhood superhero and even talking to girls (especially those he likes), you name it.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Deku" was originally meant as an insult at the hands of Bakugō, meaning "useless" in Japanese. It only becomes affectionate when Uraraka points out how it reminds her of "I can do anything". This stays in his memory long enough for him to use it as his superhero name.
  • Awesomeness By Analysis: Midoriya has an ocean of knowledge about pro Heroes and quickly makes connections between similar types of Quirks in them, as well as his peers. This lends itself incredibly well to his performance on the field.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: He's one of the most kindhearted characters in the series, but he's imbued (at one point) with a Quirk that demonstrates itself as giant, slimy black tendrils of energy - Blackwhip.
  • Badass Adorable: He may be a young teenager with large, baby-like eyes and an endearing, boyish voice, but when using One For All in battle, he's a force to be reckoned with and not to be underestimated.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He prefers to use One For All in hand-to-hand combat more than anything.
  • Berserk Button: He's very easily angered by the prospect of someone torturing innocents, especially children. Muscular and Overhaul found out the hardest way possible why pushing this button is a bad idea.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Yes, Midoriya is exceedingly polite and friendly. Yes, he has Ocular Gushers and is very emotional. And yes, he will pulverize you in a fight should you mess with his friends.
  • Big Man on Campus: Has excellent grades, is generally very hard-working and charismatic, and hence beloved by his fellow classmates and held in great esteem by the teachers at U.A., as well as pro Heroes outside the institution.
  • Boring but Practical: One For All: Full Cowl doesn't have the sheer power of using the Quirk at 100% power, but it gives Midoriya a dose of power that allows him to fight without severely injuring himself. As the series progresses, he's able to use higher percentages of its power without hurting himself: starting from 5%, then going to 8%, 20% and 30% (though he can briefly tap into 45%).
  • Born Unlucky: One of the few 20% of people in the world to be born Quirkless. This changes once he receives One For All.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Initially, he's rendered completely mute when Uraraka talks to him for the first time and still finds it incredibly awkward to talk to her afterward. Later, however, he's gradually accustoming himself to the presence of his female classmates and behaving more relaxed around them.
  • Character Tic: He sweats profusely when he's nervous. On one occasion, he managed to sweat through his costume.
  • Cheerful Child: When he was four years old, he was very upbeat and chipper.
  • The Chosen One: As the successor of One For All, handpicked by All Might, Midoriya certainly qualifies.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He will never turn his back on someone in need, even if he doesn't have a Quirk. Sadly, this behavior occasionally gets him seriously injured on more than one occasion.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: At first glance, he doesn't strike you as much because of his normally baggy wardrobe. However, underneath that, Midoriya is lean, very ripped and fit.
  • Color Motif: Green: from his hair and eyes to his Hero costume and many other accessories he wears in end credits and other scenes.
  • Combo-Platter Powers: One For All not only stockpiled strength but also assimilated Quirks of past users. There are a total of seven Quirks that Midoriya is the first out all the users can access. Here is the list of the known Quirks:
    • Blackwhip is the Quirk of the fifth user, Daigoro Banjo. The power allows him to create and manipulate tendrils of dark energy from their arms. It can be used to grapple an object or capture enemies.
    • Float, Quirk of Nana Shimura (the seventh user), allows him to levitate.
  • Crush Blush: While he's easily flustered by the presence of pretty much all the girls he's interacting with, only Uraraka's closeness can make his whole face go beet-red.
  • Death Glare: He can give off some pretty impressive ones when in the heat of battle.
  • Determinator: Even without a Quirk, he was always aspiring to become a hero just like All Might, the greatest hero in the world!
  • Dork Knight: He's a Hero-in-training armed with one of the most powerful Quirks in the world, One For All, is very intelligent and perceptive and infallibly brave and selfless in times of danger. He's also completely Adorkable and a major fanboy of All Might who gushes any time he gets to meet a pro Hero. He's also very easily flustered by the notion of romance.
  • Emotional Bruiser: Midoriya is very in-touch with his feelings and expresses all of them with complete honesty. Most notably, he cries often and cries profusely.
  • Extreme Doormat: As a child, he used to fawn over and tag along with Bakugō, no matter how much he and his peers harassed and belittled him. By the time of his first battle trial, however, he drops this behavior entirely and stands up to his bully.
  • Fan Boy: Of All Might, to the point of styling some elements of his first hero costume after his face and even making a perfect imitation of his iconic grin.
  • Fatal Flaw: His meek and submissive nature makes him awkward in unfamiliar situations, even though he steadily grows out of it as the story moves onward.
  • Fights Like a Normal: He tends not to excessively rely on his Quirk to do heroics until he feels he's mastered it enough to not get himself injured.
  • Friend to All Children: He's generally very approachable when it comes to handling children and has made several young friends, the most notable of which are Kota and Eri.
  • Grew a Spine: Initially meek and submissive, especially to the likes of Bakugō, Deku eventually grows more courageous and confident, so much so that the aforementioned Bakugō is no longer perceived as a threat, and that Midoriya has no qualms in taking him on.
  • Grin of Audacity: He generally sports this when taking on a very powerful opponent.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: His hairstyle never changes throughout the story, unless he uses Full Cowl at 100%.
  • Hero Worshipper: To a fault. Usually, his admiration and respect for All Might go so far that he doesn't even try to think what would suit his own heroics better, rather opting to imitate All Might.
  • Heroic RROD: Using One For All at 100% or even more wrecks his arms, and even breaks his legs if he isn't careful. This is why he has to constantly and consciously train himself to be more conservative about how much of his Quirk's power he uses.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Midoriya, having been gifted his Quirk by All Might rather than it being innate from birth, has trouble acknowledging when he's genuinely earned something, resembling a form of "impostor syndrome".
  • Hope Bringer: Midoriya aspires to be the kind of Hero to shine as a beacon of optimism to destitute people.
  • Humble Hero: One of the prime examples in the series, taking after his childhood favorite, All Might. Midoriya wants to make people's lives better and protect them with a smile, so that they can feel reassured knowing that he's there for them. He doesn't concern himself with praise, recognition, or awards.
  • Ideal Hero: By all indicators, he's shaping up to become one by the end: despite his inexperience, he's courageous, confident, charismatic, and by far the most altruistic of his peers.
  • The Klutz: When he's exceptionally nervous, Midoriya loses control of his reflexes and ends up in a clumsy accident.
  • Large Ham: When he's overreacting to something, he tends to be extremely vocally expressive.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Using One For All: Full Cowl, Midoriya increases both his movement speed and his physical strength, enabling him to move around quickly and deal out large amounts of damage without wrecking his body.
  • Magnetic Hero: In more than one instance, Midoriya has shown himself to be very charismatic and influential. He becomes very good at commanding the respect of his colleagues and helps several of them overcome their own problems, most notably Todoroki and Ida.
  • Meaningful Name: "Midori" means "green" in Japanese, which obviously fits his hair, eyes and costume.
  • Megaton Punch: The One For All Smash is basically this when channeled through Midoriya's arms at full strength.
  • Messy Hair: Downplayed. He has really curly hair that spikes in all directions, but he seems to keep it clean at all times.
  • Momma's Boy: A rare instance not played for laughs. He has a very close relationship with his mother, and he has her to thank for influencing his costume's design later on.
  • Motor Mouth: When he begins to mutter to himself, he tends to talk very quickly, without pause.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the narrator for the series overall, and he already spoiled the ending: He someday becomes the world's greatest hero ever!
  • Mr. Fanservice: Clothing Damage and the occasional Shirtless Scene are frequent reminders that he's fit as a fiddle and very lean under his loose-fitting clothes.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: The Quirkless son of a man and a woman who both have Quirks.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: All Might stresses that strengthening his body is very important for inheriting One For All. As a consequence, 10 months of relentless training have made him very ripped, if slightly more muscularly built, though he's still lean.
  • Nerd Action Hero: He's very well-versed on the abilities and powers of other superheroes, and gets to work on being one himself, which makes him an incredibly valuable ally on the field.
  • Nervous Wreck: He's very easily flustered and tends to be exceedingly skittish and emotional. Even though he calms this trait, it remains nevertheless.
  • Nice Guy: One of the main reasons All Might chose Midoriya as his successor was his unfailingly kind and compassionate disposition, which the pro Hero believes spurred him to save Bakugō without any aforethought. He does good to others, even if there's no reward, because he prioritizes the safety of his fellow man above his own and wants to bring hope to his people.
  • Nice Shoes: He's rarely seen without his iconic red-and-white sneakers (even wearing them on his U.A. uniform instead of the prescribed dress shoes), and he incorporates their design into his hero costume.
  • Ocular Gushers: His large, round eyes are practically a fountain of tears given how often he cries - Tears of Joy, Tears of Remorse, Tender Tears, Manly Tears, he's cried them all. At one point, his tears were so strong he made a hole crack in the ground beneath his feet when he started crying.
  • Out-of-Character is Serious Business: Midoriya tends to be calm, tactical and patient, but the very notion of child abuse, or even trying to threaten a child, is enough to send him into an uncharacteristic rage.
  • The Paragon: Considered one by All Might, who saw his disposition to leap into another's aid without hesitation as the main factor in why the Hero decided to name him the successor of One For All. He also has plenty of positive influence on his classmates, most notably Todoroki, Ida and Uraraka.
  • Le Parkour: Once he gets the hang of One For All: Full Cowl, he begins to move around more athletically and quickly.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He's only 5'5" tall, but he has the immensely powerful Quirk, One For All, that grants him the power to stockpile enormous amounts of strength.
  • Puppy Dog Eyes: His eyes are very large, which makes his happy glances look all the cuter.
  • Scars Are Forever: His duel with Todoroki has left him with permanent scars on his right hand, and the consequences of his gruesome fight with Muscular has forced him to wear a compression sleeve on his right upper arm to brace it and minimize what seems to be chronic pain.
  • Shrinking Violet: Initially, he was very meek, very shy, and completely submissive to anyone who wanted to make a fool out of him. Come his training under All Might, he gradually becomes more courageous and confident, dropping this behavior.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He bears a lot of physical similarities to his mother, Inko, from their green hair to their green, large eyes.
  • Superpower Lottery: Not only did he inherit the Quirk of his hero, but it gives more strength than All Might due to its ability to stockpile power when passed to each user. There is also how he is the first successor to be able to use the Quirks assimilated by One for All from seven predecessors.
  • Super Speed: One For All dramatically accelerates his movements, so much so that he can avoid gunfire when using Full Cowl at 5% power.
  • Super Strength: One For All's primary function is to increase the physical strength of its wielder dramatically, and it's lent itself very well to several fights Midoriya's been in the past.
  • Super Mode: One For All: Full Cowl is the technique developed during his internship with Gran Torino. Compared to focusing One For All into one part of his body, he spreads it throughout his body evenly. This method of using One For All not only avoids damaging his body but allows gaining both superhuman strength and speed. This new technique doesn't mean he can't damage his body as high percents can lead to more damage compared to lower ones. He later finds a different style while using it along with improving his limit percentage to become higher as the series progresses.
  • Swiss Army Superpower: One For All in the hands of Midoriya has found different applications through the use of superhuman strength. Later on, it is revealed that One For All has assimilated 7 Quirks from previous inheritors. Midoriya is the first to unlock this aspect of One For All when he first used Black Whip and may unlock the other six. This attribute means he has further the versatility of One For All compared to the other 8 users.
  • Thinking Out Loud: He tends to mumble when he gets lost in thought or overthinks things. It's a habit that most of his peers find either amusing or creepy.
  • Un-Sorcerer: Played Straight with Izuku being one of the few people on the planet unlucky enough to be Quirkless, but it doesn't last long before All Might grants him One For All.
  • Verbal Tic:
    • He's prone to babbling and muttering when he begins to overthink things. This habit tends to creep out or annoy his classmates and other people in school.
    • He's very prone to screaming loudly when overreacting to something, coming across as a Large Ham.
  • Volcanic Veins: When using One For All at very strong power, Midoriya's veins glow and shine brightly.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: He has dark green hair.
  • Youthful Freckles: He has small, dark freckles on his cheeks.

Katsuki Bakugō - Dynamight

Great Explosion Murder God
Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)
Quirk: Explosion
Voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese, TV Anime), Clifford Chapin, (English dub, TV anime)

An almost life-long acquaintance and former friend of Izuku's - a condescending, arrogant and aggressive young man who incessantly bullied Izuku for being Quirkless during childhood and junior high school. By pure surprise, he ends up being in the same class as his former bullying victim. He strongly believes Might Makes Right and that to be a great hero means to be utterly invincible in combat, and as such, detests the notion of being helped by someone else, seeing it as a bad reflection on himself. His Quirk, Explosion, secretes an igneous nitro-glycerin-like substance from his palms that he uses for making explosive attacks, and occasionally to make himself fly away.

Bakugō exhibits the following tropes:
  • Affectionate Nickname: Ever since childhood, Midoriya has referred to him as "Kacchan", a portmanteau of his first name, Katsuki, and the honorific "chan", which denotes special endearment and is usually uttered by young boys to one another. The nickname stuck around all the way to high school.
  • Anime Hair: Styled like an explosion, just like his Quirk and attitude.
  • Anti-Hero: Deconstructed. His antagonistic behavior, aggressive temper and overall lack of cooperation prove to be a hindrance for him, even though he's firmly aligned with the Heroes and has vast amounts of potential, what with being both physically fit and very nimble with his Quirk. More to the point, it's exactly why he failed his Provisional Hero License exam.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: His hairstyle is shaped like an exploding firecracker, which goes in handy with both the nature of his Quirk and his attitude.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: His default approach to combat is to dish out as much dirt as possible to leave as little a window as possible for his opponents to strategize. Downplayed in that he's still capable of concocting more complex plans.
  • The Berserker: He fights very boisterously and very violently, which in some instances works against him.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: He may be stubborn, proud and arrogant to a fault, but it's eventually revealed during his brawl with Midoriya that Bakugō, in spite of all the praise and adulation he was given as a child, has an unfulfilled need for validation and acceptance and longs for someone to see him as a beacon of hope. On the other hand, he can't realize that the way he's going about that is completely wrong.
  • Blood Knight: Bakugō relishes the prospect of an intense fight so much that he becomes angry when his opponent avoids it or doesn't give it their best when taking on him. He wants to earn his victory.
  • Broken Ace: A less sympathetic example; always lauded for his powerful Quirk and amazing bravery as a young child, come high school, Bakugō finds himself in a situation where his nasty demeanor, previously overlooked, works against him in spades, to the point where everyone finds it difficult to work with him.
  • Brutal Honesty: Katsuki always speaks his mind, but rarely ever minds his speech.
  • The Bully: Used to be quite a barbaric one in junior high school, even low-key telling Midoriya to commit suicide when he burns and throws away his notebook on Hero powers.
  • Character Tics:
    • Notably, he likes to bare his teeth whenever he's excited or angry.
    • He hates wearing ties, preferring to leave his own shirt unbuttoned at the top.
    • He sticks his hands in his pockets and lumbers around whenever he's sullen.
  • The Comically Serious: His uncontrollable temper and taking everything as a personal attack is pretty much always played for laughs.
  • Determinator: When Bakugō sets his mind to something, he'll do it no matter how the odds are stacked in or out of his favor. It's this quality that even Midoriya sees as the true trait of a winner.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He loathes when someone takes sympathy to him when he's in trouble and tries to help him: so much so that he perceives it as a bad reflection on his ego. Especially pronounced when it comes to Midoriya: he perceives his genuine kindness as a means for Midoriya to "show off his moral superiority over him". This is also the root of the animosity the two would share for a good chunk of the story.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Bakugō, an overly competitive, violent jerk who bulldozes over people to get what he wants, is genuinely appalled by what Endeavor has done to his family to do the same.
  • Explosion Propulsion: He can use his Quirk to become airborne for a short amount of time.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Even with his battle prowess, determined go-getter personality and tactical skill acknowledged, Bakugō is considered an extremely unpleasant individual by pretty much all of his class. Even Midoriya and Kirishima, who are some of the students he's on more familiar terms with, think he's a piece of work. It's also saying a lot that he's less liked than Mineta.
  • Glory Hound: Bakugō strongly craves praise, recognition and accolades for his heroics and fights to one-up and trump anyone whom he perceives as a strong opponent. As he grows more humble over time, however, he grows a more upstanding streak and generally doesn't like winning if he feels he didn't earn it.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's unambiguously a heroic character, albeit one who's immensely stubborn, mean-spirited, proud and short-tempered.
  • Grumpy Bear: He's so short-tempered, grouchy and anti-social it's easier to count the times in the series where he isn't in a bad mood.
  • Guttural Growler: In the anime, he speaks with a coarse, raspy voice that gets especially gruff when he's bellowing at the top of his lungs.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It's easier to list the moments in the series where Bakugō isn't throwing an apoplectic seizure and acting like a self-entitled brat. And heaven forfend that he loses, or wins in a manner that doesn't satisfy him... He loses his temper so many times it becomes a Running Gag.
  • Having a Blast: The essence of his Quirk is that it can create explosions which he uses in many inventive ways.
  • Hero with an F In Good: All of his battle prowess and analytical intelligence are eventually hampered by his charmless, foul personality. More to the point, Bakugō outright ignores this aspect of heroics, and it's been much to his detriment. He fails his Provisional Hero License exam because of it. He later makes efforts to correct this bad habit.
  • Hot-Blooded: Relishing the prospect of a good fight, with a fiery drive to win at all costs and a very powerful ability, he absolutely qualifies.
  • Hypocrite: He dislikes being looked down upon (or at least, what he believes is looking down upon him), but will jump at the opportunity to speak derisively towards someone.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: For all his bluster and dauntless combat tactics, he's actually shown to be deeply insecure about being perceived as brave, strong and heroic. More to the point, when he took offense to Midoriya trying to help him up from a fall when they were children, he believed having someone who's as "feeble" as Midoriya helping him, the "strongest of them all", would be a bad reflection on his ego. The envy only became worse when Midoriya got into U.A., stood up to Bakugō and managed to defeat him in the Battle Trial.
  • It's All About Me: Profoundly solipsistic, proud and single-minded in his pursuit of becoming the number-one Hero in Japan, Bakugō will do anything to mow his rivals down. If he doesn't have his way, he'll usually pitch a hissy fit. This was generally visible when he was a child, where he kept other kids around simply as toadies to bolster his ego.
  • Jerkass: A major one. He bullied Midoriya for kicks as a child and in junior high school, and is generally smug and antagonistic even when he enters U.A. High. He's very low on compassion, which is easily reflected by the fact that he's had zero rescue points in the entrance exam, and that he forsook his mission of protecting the projectile in the Battle Trial just to take out his anger on Midoriya, whom he envies more than anyone. It's eventually Subverted; see Jerk with a Heart of Gold below.
  • Jerk Jock: Physically fit? Check. Extremely unpleasant? Check. Bullies meek people? Check. Although, he has better grades than most other examples.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: It turns out that despite being an abrasive, competitive and selfish jerk, Bakugō shows that he truly believes that a Hero should be at the top of his game to protect others. He is very distraught over All Might's retirement and blames himself for causing it, which he confides to Midoriya in a fit of rage. He also went to great lengths to motivate the class band to do their best while preparing for the U.A. Cultural Festival. It's cemented in the Paranormal Liberation War arc, where he takes an attack from Tomura Shigaraki meant for Midoriya and is seriously injured; later on, the first question he asks is about Midoriya's safety.
  • Large Ham: He tends to express every one of his emotions with 100% drive and honesty.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For all the bullying and abuse he rent on Midoriya over the years, he got one of the biggest bruises onto his ego - his unpleasant personality has driven away the majority of his class, and his former bullying target is now considered the shining example of heroism.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's more muscular than Midoriya and has a more revealing costume than him. There's also the occasional Shirtless Scene and the second end credits to Season 2, where he's shirtless and decked out in tribal tattoos, flaunting his musculature all around.
  • The Nicknamer: He's so self-absorbed he doesn't even bother learning his classmates' names, often referring to them according to their physical features. The only exception to this, of course, was "Deku".
  • No Indoor Voice: He's rarely ever seen or heard not screeching at the top of his lungs.
  • No Sense of Humor: Downplayed. While he can make others laugh in rather roundabout ways, he absolutely can't take a joke at his expense.
  • Not Quite Flight: He can use Explosion to propel himself into the air to cover a larger stretch of distance than he normally would running.
  • Not So Above It All: Try as hard as he might to present himself as a cantankerous grouch, it's very obvious he's having fun during the music performance at the U.A. School Festival, cracking a heartfelt smile while drumming.
  • Out-of-Character is Serious Business: Normally, he's exceedingly loud and aggressive, but when he becomes calm and quiet, you will know he's caught onto something, or that something's amiss.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's rarely ever seen without a scowl on his face.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As a perpetually furious berserker, it's only fitting that he has blood-red eyes.
  • Renaissance Man: He's a lot more sophisticated than he looks - he has some of the best grades in class, is a good chef, a good babysitter and a very skilled drummer.
  • The Rival: Set up as one to Izuku Midoriya ever since the beginning of the story. It stems from years of bullying and a sudden realization that his former victim was now powerful enough to compete with him, not to mention that his belief of what a Hero should be is a stark contrast with his own. Eventually, it becomes more of a Friendly Rivalry.
  • Screaming Warrior: He is very rarely heard speaking in a normal tone of voice, especially during battle.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Has a tank top on his Hero costume.
  • Smarter Than You Look: His tripwire temper, overall vulgarity and unlikable behavior make it very easy to forget just how intelligent Bakugō is. He's shown to be very analytical and observant, and on the formal side of things, his grades are the third-best in class (for comparison's sake, better than Midoriya's).
  • Sore Loser: Bakugō almost never takes kindly to either defeat or failure, perceiving them as a bad reflection on his ego. Especially if Midoriya succeeds and he doesn't.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He is practically the spitting image of his mother, Mitsuki Bakugō, with the only difference being that he's male. They even share the same trip-wire temper and propensity for violence.
  • Super Toughness: Given that he has a Quirk that's about producing explosions, his body is incredibly resistant to its recoil and effects, and consequently more resilient to impacts in general.
  • Tricked-Out Gloves: Designed to look like hand grenades, with the function of both minimizing the damage done to his hands and arms and of collecting more sweat to make stronger explosions.
  • Tsurime Eyes: He has strongly slanted eyes which fit very well with his angry expressions and his default mood.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Tends to happen when people assume he's a meathead because of his aggressive personality. In turn, he underestimates Midoriya the first time they come to blows during the Battle Trial, and he's left shocked that his former bullying victim fought back.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Despite Midoriya risking his life several times to save him, Bakugō has never thanked him, or apologized for all the bullying he put him through since when they were children.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: He's savvy enough to know that Heroes are always the winners, which goes in hand with his philosophy, which makes him reject Tomura Shigaraki's offer to join the League without a second thought.
  • Weaponized Headgear: The edges of the explosion-shaped accessories that are part of his face mask are sharp, evidenced by how during a comedic moment, he threw it at Midoriya and they stabbed him in the head.
  • Would Hit a Girl: For him, it doesn't matter what's between his opponent's legs - he will go all out with the full brunt of his power against a woman as hard as he would against a man.

Shōto Todoroki - Shōto

Debut: Chapter 6 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Half-Cold Half-Hot
Voiced by Yuuki Kaji (Japanese, TV Anime), David Matranga, (English dub, TV anime)

One of two students enrolled into U.A. by recommendations, Todoroki is a reserved, but persevering youth. He's the son of Endeavor (Enji Todoroki), the number-two Hero in Japan, who groomed him to supersede All Might and, consequently, saw him as more of a pawn, than his child. His Quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot, allows him to shoots jets of ice from his right side and jets of fire from his left. Given that his abusive father's Quirk is all about fire, Shōto refuses to use it out of spite.

Todoroki exhibits the following tropes:
  • Abusive Parents: Oh brother, where to start here. His dad was an unsuccessful rival to All Might, so he married a woman with an ice-based Quirk, hoping to sire a son with both Quirks, regarding said offspring as a weapon that would outshine his rival. While Shōto's mother treated him better, she was also a victim of her husband's abuse, and was prone to fits of rage, one of which caused her to throw boiling water in Shōto's face. Understandably, Shōto hates his father.
  • The Ace: He is an incredibly talented, powerful and perceptive Quirk fighter, the strongest in his class by a wide margin. It comes of no surprise that he got into U.A. via recommendations, without going through the entrance exam.
  • Achilles' Heel: Since he almost exclusively uses his ice abilities, he has difficulty defending his left flank.
  • Adorkable: Despite being very stoic, tactical and efficient as a fighter, Todoroki is very socially awkward and it comes through in generally endearing ways.
  • Ascended Extra: From the U.A. Sports Festival onward, he becomes a main character.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: His hairstyle very conveniently highlights where his powers each come from: white to the right (ice) and red to the left (fire).
  • Awesomeness By Analysis: Todoroki is very perceptive and analytical when it comes to drawing conclusions, as he was easily able to deduce that Midoriya's Quirk has more than a passing resemblance to All Might's, even though he's Entertainingly Wrong about their apparent connection.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Comparing him to his father, Enji, is a very easy way to get under his skin.
    • Urging him to stand idly by while his friends are in danger is another, and he gave the Hosu Chief of Police a mouthful for it.
  • Bishonen: He's considered handsome by almost all of his female classmates.
  • Boring but Practical: His current Hero costume is not all too flashy or or adorned, but it's fireproof and lends itself very well to his Quirk.
  • Brutal Honesty: He'll usually say what's on his mind with 100% earnesty, with little regard whether or not it's awkward.
  • The Comically Serious: His awkwardness makes for some very funny comedy relief: metaphors tend to go over his head, and he has a habit of making comical understatements about things he's done, like when asked about arranging his dorm.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Humorously enough, almost literally. He began as very cold, aloof and stubborn, holding onto a grudge against his father which stopped him from tapping into his full potential. Later, especially after his fateful duel with Midoriya in the Sports Festival, he began to thaw away and warm up to his classmates. Midoriya becomes his first true friend, while he also befriends Ida and Yaoyorozu.
  • Elemental Hair: White on the right and red on the left. Take a wild guess which side each of his powers comes from.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite having a rough relationship with his father, he does have some genuine love for him, as seen in his reaction to his battle with a very powerful Nomu.
  • A Friend in Need: In more than a few instances, Shōto reached out to his friends to offer help when the need was dire.
  • Heroic Lineage: Son of Endeavor, the 2nd highest-ranking Hero in Japan.
  • An Ice Person: The right side, which he inherited from his mother, allows him to shoot out ice.
  • The Jinx: Played for laughs when he claims that he has some kind of curse that makes other people mess up their hands or arms (namely Midoriya and Ida).
  • Literal-Minded: Shōto doesn't understand metaphors and tends to take them at face value. Most notably, when Mt. Lady said "his smile would make her heart jump out of her chest", he becomes worried.
  • Logical Weakness: Overusing his ice powers will give Shōto frostbite on his right arm and leg, as well as hypothermia. His movements slow down and he becomes sluggish unless he uses his left side to thaw away the cold.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name, "Shōto", is comprised of two Japanese characters that mean "freezing" and "heating", respectively.
  • Mundane Utility: During the Forest Training Camp Arc, he uses his fire powers to light a barbecue grill.
  • Mr. Fanservice: To a much lesser extent than Midoriya, but he does get some scenes of Clothing Damage and a single Shirtless Scene. To boot, his female classmates consider him very handsome.
  • Nice Guy: Sure, he's not very good at expressing his feelings, but through his actions it's very clear that Shōto's heart is in the right place and more. When seeing Midoriya distressed over his mission to save Eri, he comforts him and offers him some of his food.
  • No Social Skills: Due to his sheltered, uptight childhood, Todoroki is quite oblivious to social cues and metaphors.
  • Not So Stoic: There are instances where he drops his cold air and loses control over his emotions. Most notably, he loses his temper when confronted by the Hosu Police Chief about his and his friends' fiasco with Hero Killer Stain.
  • Oxymoronic Being: His Quirk lets him create and control fire and ice.
  • Patchwork Kids: The most overt example in his family and in the series at large: his hair is split into white on the right (where his ice power comes from) and red on his left (where his fire power comes from).
  • Playing with Fire: His left side is inherited from his father, and it allows him to do this.
  • Privileged Rival: He comes from an incredibly wealthy background, and is set up as one of Midoriya's rivals during the U.A. Sports Festival. This ends when they become friends.
  • Scars Are Forever: The burn scar over his left eye that he got from his mother has never healed.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: He lacks plenty of awareness when it comes to social cues and reacts in very odd ways to otherwise mundane situations. Other people have teased him about this.
  • The Stoic: He doesn't emote very much, and therefore can come across as very cold and calculating when intimidating someone. It's a mask that he developed over years of abuse inflicted onto him by his father.
  • Superpower Lottery: Shōto is both a winner and a loser; despite the contradictory nature of his Quirk, he can control it very well, and is, as a result, incredibly powerful. It's a shame they've made his whole life a living hell.
  • Super Breeding Program: Given his father's goals, he's the result of this, and as bad as his life has been as a result, he has four siblings who also had both Quirks, but without any compatibility. His cruel father considered them failures.
  • Troubled but Cute: He has a completely dysfunctional family and was on the receiving end of much abuse at his father's hands and overall appears very stoic and no-nonsense, but it's generally agreed among the girls in 1-A that he's the most handsome boy in class. To boot, his social ineptitude makes him come across as Adorkable.
  • Unknown Rival: For a few episodes, at least, he made it clear his goal was to defeat Midoriya, without giving any reason why. Until Midoriya learns about his past.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was once a chipper, enthusiastic child, but the ruthless training and outright abuse his father put him through has left him a traumatized, cold husk. However, he begins to rekindle his kindness after his match against Midoriya.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer: Todoroki isn't particularly creative when it comes to using his Quirk's power, and it's something he's acknowledged when thinking about ways to fight against villains who can counter him effectively.

Ochako Uraraka - Uravity

Debut: Chapter 3 (Manga), Episode 3 (Anime)
Quirk: Zero Gravity
Voiced by Ayane Sakura (Japanese), Luci Christian (English dub)

An outgoing young girl who befriends Midoriya after he saves her during the entrance exam. Her Quirk, "Zero Gravity", allows her to nullify the gravitational pull of an object, or creature, for as long as she can take (overusing it causes her nausea). She wants to become a heroine in order to earn enough money to give her parents a good life. Appears to have a mutual crush on Midoriya.

Uraraka exhibits the following tropes:
  • Action Girl: An action-girl in training, anyway; the reason she opts to intern with Gunhead is to work on her martial arts, in order to broaden her skill set. It turns out to be a boon in the long run.
  • Adorkable: She has a tendency to dork out when overly excited about something, ignoring personal space. Most notably with Midoriya. Also, when asked about whether or not she likes him, she loses control over her reflexes and even makes herself float once.
  • Badass Adorable: She may be a short, cute girl, but she's willing to give whatever it takes to be a proper Heroine, and not even Toga can intimidate her.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: After her internship ends, she continues to refine her martial arts skills until they're the best in class.
  • Bizarre Human Biology: She looks pretty natural and human for the most part, except for the small pads on her fingertips that are related to her Quirk.
  • Blush Sticker: She has permanent ones, highlighting her youthful, chipper nature.
  • Crush Blush: Any time her attraction to Midoriya is brought up to tease her, she blushes in embarrassment.
  • Cute Bruiser: Interns with Gunhead to study martial arts, but is still as cute and lively as ever.
  • Daddy's Girl: She loves both of her parents, but she seems to be especially close to her father, given that he's the one who gives her the phone call after she lost to Bakugō.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her Hero costume, other than her boots, braces and utility belt, is completely skintight, much to her initial embarrassment.
  • Genki Girl: She's got a very chipper and energetic personality.
  • Gravity Master: Her Quirk allows her to manipulate the gravity field of anything she touches.
  • Heroic RROD: If she crosses the weight limit of her Quirk (around 3 tonnes), she can get incredibly dizzy to the point of nausea, or at worst, collapse.
  • Hidden Buxom: Her Hero costume highlights her waist, hips and bosom more nicely than her regular loose-fitting clothes.
  • In a Single Bound: She can use her Quirk on herself and, while it takes some training to master it without any negative side effects, she can leap large distances in a single bound.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: The first time Midoriya sees her in her hero costume, he's rendered uncomfortable with arousal because of how well it outlines her figure. More to the point, she didn't specify otherwise, so the costume makers defaulted to skintight.
  • Latex Space Suit: She has a form-fitting Hero costume complete with an astronaut-like helmet and large boots.
  • Love Interest: She's being set up as one for Midoriya.
  • Male Gaze: She draws in quite a bit when she reveals her Hero suit.
  • Nice Girl: From her very first appearance it's readily apparent that Uraraka is a well-intentioned, tender and compassionate young lady.
  • Not Quite Flight: After extensive training, Uraraka can use her Quirk on herself to float over large distances with minimal effort.
  • Only in It For the Money: Her primary reason for studying to become a Hero is to help her parents' construction company get out of financial trouble, and she's embarrassed when confessing this to her friends. It's greatly mitigated by them acknowledging that helping her family is a noble goal, and because Ochaco herself is a very sweet girl.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: She's the only pupil in Class 1-A to have stated that her family's poor, and she wants to use her studies to help them out of said poverty. She also tends to be greatly surprised by lavish things as a consequence
  • Pink Means Feminine: Her hero costume is mostly pink with white and black details.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: It's strongly implied that she likes Midoriya because he's so altruistic, helpful and endearing, needless to say because he put his life on the line to save her.
  • Spit Take: Often when trying not to laugh, or failing to do so.
  • Stepford Smiler: A single instance: she puts on a cheerful attitude after having lost to Bakugō in the Sports Festival duels and encourages Midoriya, who came to check up on her. The moment Midoriya leaves and she calls her dad, she begins to cry.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ochaco has a lot in common with her mother in terms of looks - the blush stickers and hair color, namely.
  • Trying Not to Cry: She fails at this when calling her father after her defeat against Bakugō. After expressing disappointment in not being able to put up a better fight, tells them she wants to help them as soon as she can and breaks into tears.
  • Well Done Daughter Girl: She wants to help her parents' construction business with her heroics so they can get out of their financial troubles and cares deeply about their approval. Fortunately, they tell her to take it easy, too.

Tenya Ida - Ingenium

Turbo Hero
Debut: Chapter 3 (Manga), Episode 3 (Anime)
Quirk: Engine
Voiced by Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese), J. Michael Tatum (English dub)

President of Class 1-A. He comes from a very wealthy family with a long Heroic lineage and is very uptight and goal-oriented, but ultimately earnest, kind-hearted and a loyal friend. His Quirk, "Engine", takes the form of engine tubes on his calves, which lends itself well to high-speed running and strong kicks.

Ida exhibits the following tropes:
  • Adaptation Dye Job: In the manga, he originally had red eyes. They're colored blue in the anime.
  • Adorkable: Try as he might to come across as stoic, serious and dedicated, Ida is a complete dork. His awkward hand gestures and his propensity for having an over-the-top persona generally give him an endearing streak.
  • Big Brother Worship: He holds his older brother, Tensei, in the utmost regard and uses him as inspiration for becoming a Hero himself.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He invokes this during the Battle Trial, putting on an insanely over-the-top and really hammy villain persona while taunting Uraraka, much to her amusement.
  • Character Tic: He often makes spontaneous gestures with his hands completely straightened out, making him look like a wannabe robot. In a flashback, his big brother, Tensei, even jokingly asks him if he wants to be a robot.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: His school uniform covers up most of his muscular physique.
  • Class Representative: To a tee. He's serious, devoted and very leader-like when he assumes the position, even though he voted for Midoriya.
  • Clothing Damage: Every time he activates his Quirk, he ends up tearing up his pants if he happens to be wearing any.
  • The Comically Serious: Everything is Serious Business for this young man, despite the fact that he's stuck in a Wacky Homeroom.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's second only to Yaoyorozu when it comes to his grades, and he's very clever as a fighter. However, when it comes to basic social interaction, Ida comes across as very stiff and strict, taking everything seriously.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Invoked. When playing the role of a villain in the Battle Trial, he puts on a stereotypically over-the-top villainous persona, complete with an Evil Laugh.
  • Explosive Overclocking: His secret weapon - he puts his leg engines into overdrive, giving him a tremendous boost of speed. The caveat is that they stall immediately afterwards and have to rest for a while.
  • Friendly Rival: He's genuinely fond of Midoriya and considers him a friend, but when it comes to pursuing the top spot in heroics, he's willing to put that friendship aside to do his best.
  • Heroic Build: Easily the tallest, most muscular member of the main cast and one of the most muscular male students in class.
  • Heroic Lineage: He comes from a family which has cultivated Heroes for a long time.
  • Hunk: A clear-cut straight example with his massive yet chiseled physique, his height, his square jaw (one of the few to have this in class 1-A) and overall good looks.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: His Hero costume is a heavy set of armor, and he has the honorable aspects of the knight down to a tee as well.
  • Large Ham: He tends to be very loud, makes exaggerated poses and hand gestures and generally acts overly dramatically in situations that don't call for it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's a very strong young man and his Quirk, aside from giving him more speed, makes his kicks even stronger.
  • Logical Weakness: Jamming his exhaust pipes will make them stop working. Similarly, overclocking them will render them useless for a certain amount of time.
  • Method Acting: In-universe, he does this during the Battle Trial. When placed in the role of a villain, Ida also tries to think and act like what he believes a villain would do.
  • Mr. Fanservice: During endurance training at the pool, his hunky physique is shown off for all its worth.
  • Nice Guy: Despite coming across and tense and imposing when first meeting Midoriya, Ida is in fact a genuinely kind-hearted, polite young man who strongly values friendship, valor and taking care of his fellow man. This was part of the reason Midoriya ceded his spot as Class President to him.
  • Organic Technology: Even though they look mechanical, his calf engines are actually a natural part of his organism and will be wounded and healed in such a manner.
  • Out-of-Character is Serious Business: Ida abandoning his post to pursue the Villain that maimed his older brother is in stark contrast to his regularly stringent, cautious and deliberate persona; Midoriya also notes that it's very unlike him to place Revenge Before Reason.
  • Punny Name: In Japanese, idaten means a fast runner. Tenya Ida is a young man with a Quirk that lets him dramatically increase his running speed.
  • Rotating Protagonist: His significance to the story often increases or decreases depending on the story arc going on at the moment.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He's usually considered the brains of the group, and wears them.
  • Specs of Awesome: He's a major badass and has the specs for this trope as well.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He and his older brother Tensei look very much alike, down to their jawline and hair color.
  • Super Speed: In a nutshell, what his Quirk is, though he often makes it look Simple Yet Awesome.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Early in the series, his Quirk works best if he only has to run in a straight line - he had problems making sharp turns while doing so. However, in later arcs he gets better at it.

Tsuyu Asui - Froppy

Rainy Season Hero
Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Frog
Voiced by Aoi Yuuki (Japanese), Monica Rial (English dub)

A young girl whose strange appearance is part of her Quirk, "Frog", which allows her to do most things that a variety of species of frog can do - from crawling on walls and leaping large distances to having a very long, strong tongue and eventually camouflage. She tends to be very soft-spoken and collected.

Asui exhibits the following tropes:
  • Animal Motifs: Her "Quirk" gives her a frog-motive. Ironically, she's close friends with a girl who has the Snake Quirk.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Does whatever a frog can! To boot, she speaks with a nasally voice reminiscent of a frog's croak.
  • Anime Hair: Her normally long hair is tied into a huge bow.
  • Badass Adorable: While she's definitely a fierce Action Girl who uses her powers very skillfully, she's also a very endearing, sociable girl who insists on being referred to on a First-Name Basis.
  • Breakout Character: She became so well-liked by fans that she ended up gaining a few episodes in the limelight during the Field Training Arc, which showcased how she trained, as well as an extensive scene in the Training of the Dead OVA that covers her backstory.
  • Brutal Honesty: She always says exactly what's on her mind, regardless if someone takes offense.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: Her special move - she can conceal herself within a backdrop very effectively, and much like many species of tropical frogs.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Though she's isn't typically attractive, her personality makes her a whole lot more endearing. And, of course, her Quirk gives her frog-like powers.
  • Emotionless Girl: Subverted. While she appears to be very flat and uninterested, it's mostly because she doesn't emote much due to her frog Quirk. Her emotions become more apparent when they're more extreme.
  • First-Name Basis: She is very particular about being referred to this way.
  • Kick Chick: She tends to employ her legs the most in combat, given that her Quirk strengthens them a lot compared to a normal human.
  • In a Single Bound: As is part and parcel for a frog, she can leap very long distances.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Her slightly frog-like appearance reflects her powers.
  • Medal of Dishonor: During the Hideout Raid Arc, she refuses to participate, telling everyone beforehand that violating the rules in such a manner would make them no better than the League of Villains. She regrets saying this later, and as a result, is very upset when Aizawa gives her a commendation for doing so.
  • Nice Girl: Tsuyu is sociable, supportive and understanding of her friends.
  • Rapunzel Hair: In relation to her overall size, she has very long hair tied into a bow.
  • Stomach of Holding: One of her abilities. She considers it gross.
  • Verbal Tic: A spontaneous "Kero", the Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croak.
  • Weak but Skilled: She's not very powerful on her own, but she puts her Quirk to the best of its use and is generally very prudent about it. This is also why she likes to team up with stronger classmates.

Eijiro Kirishima - Red Riot

Sturdy Hero
Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Hardening
Voiced by Toshiki Masuda (Japanese), Justin Cook (English dub)

A boisterous and friendly young man who's also a great admirer of veteran pro Hero Crimson Riot. Not only does he value chivalry and confidence, but he's also one of the few people who are on friendly terms with Bakugō. His Quirk, Hardening, allows him to increase the density of his body to a rather rock-like state, which allows him to tank blows and power through to attack his enemies.

Kirishima displays the following tropes:
  • Alliterative Name: His Hero name, Red Riot.
  • Ascended Extra: Even though he was a background character, he's gradually gained more prominence than the rest. It came full circle when he was part of the group of interns that raided the Shie Hassaikai and his backstory was first shown.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Given that his Quirk exponentially increases his defensive capabilities, he's grown accustomed to rushing in and powering through obstacles. This has backfired on him on more than one occasion.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: His Hot-Blooded personality, his prowess in battle and his proclivity for traditional masculinity make him one.
  • Brought to You by The Letter "S": His first costume's belt has a large red "R".
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: He's a proficient and competent fighter with a Quirk that lends itself incredibly well to the aforementioned. He's also one of the friendliest boys in his class, eager to commiserate with and support others.
  • Color Character: Most of his Hero costume is red, as are his eyes and hair, which fits well with his fiery personality and pays a loving homage to his favorite Hero, Crimson Riot.
  • Fiery Redhead: He's an energetic young man with red hair. Turns out, however, that it's actually dyed and styled that way in an homage to his favorite pro Hero, Crimson Riot, as well as to repel his past personality from his memory.
  • Hero Worshipper: As much as Midoriya and Bakugō admire All Might, Kirishima idolizes Crimson Riot as a role model for courage, assertiveness and confidence. He even made his own Hero name a tribute to said Hero.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He has unusually low self-esteem for someone who's all about being Rated "M" for Manly. At one point, he cried that he hated his Quick when it manifested (he accidentally cut his eye with it) and is haunted by memories of being all bark and no bite during junior high school.
  • Hot-Blooded: Kirishima tends to be loud, boisterous and encouraging of his peers in battle. It's actually a conscious attempt to leave behind his past personality, which he considers cowardly.
  • Instant Armor: His Hardening Quirk makes him all but impervious to outside attacks, with the odd exceptions of getting punched by Togata and having his Unbreakable form cracked by Kendo Rappa.
  • Mangst: Despite projecting the image of an energetic and feisty tough guy, Kirishima is actually very self-conscious and humble. It's shown that he doesn't think very highly of his Quirk's power and that he's very concerned with maintaining the image of a brave man, especially when he failed to be one when two of his schoolmates in junior high were nearly attacked by Gigantomachia, and Ashido intervened instead.
  • Mighty Glacier: Kirishima's offensive and defensive capabilities are notably high among his peers, but activating his Hardening Quirk limits the amount he can move around. To boot, he doesn't have any enhancements for his movements, which makes him sluggish in comparison to Bakugo or Midoriya.
  • Nice Guy: Kirishima is by far one of the most empathetic, supportive and amiable boys in his class. It goes so far in that he's the first of the students to check on his peers' well-being, and even tries to reason with a villain he's facing out of nothing but sympathy, despite the fact that he was attacked by said villain. In conjunction to this, he had the fourth-highest number of rescue points in his U.A. entrance exam.
  • Only Friend: He's initially the only student whom the normally aggressive and antisocial Bakugō considers a friend and confides in.
  • Rated "M" for Manly: He constantly invokes chivalry, confidence and living without regrets, in a loving homage to his Hero idol, Crimson Riot. He wears a bandanna when at home, has a punching bag in his dorm and even his clock has muscled arms.
  • Super Toughness: His Quirk naturally hardens his entire body, giving him a rock-like appearance and a similar level of durability.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His Hero costume, regardless of the edition, completely exposes his torso. This is partly justified because any clothing he would wear on top would be torn apart by his Quirk's jagged edges.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Subverted. He dyed and styled his hair red in a loving homage to Crimson Riot, and to leave behind his past personality.

Momo Yaoyorozu - Creati

Everything Hero
Debut: Chapter 6 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Creation
Voiced by Marina Inoue (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English dub)

Vice President of Class 1-A. She comes from a very wealthy family and, like Todoroki, she enrolled into U.A. through recommendations. Her Quirk, Creation, allows her to produce any kind of inorganic objects from the lipids in her body, provided she knows its chemical composition.

Yaoyorozu displays the following tropes:
  • Absolute Cleavage: Justified Trope. She has a huge slit on her costume's cleavage that goes all the way down to her midriff, but it's there for a reason: to allow her as much room as she needs for producing larger items from her body.
  • The Ace: Exceptionally intelligent, resourceful in the use of her Quirk and one of only four students to enroll into U.A. through recommendations. To reinforce this, she has the highest grades among all her peers in the first-year midterm exams and scored first in the Provisional Hero License Exam.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Called "Yaomomo" by all her fellow girls in class, as a portmanteau of her last name and her given name.
  • Anime Hair: Her Hero hairstyle is a very tricked out ponytail that resembles a crest. When she lets her hair down, however, it looks completely realistic.
  • Badass Adorable: One of the smartest and most competent students in 1-A is also the most presentably beautiful, but what makes her an example of this trope is her kindness and her enthusiastic desire to help out when the need arises.
  • Badass Bookworm: In order to successfully use her Quirk, she has to know the chemical make-up of whatever she's creating down to the letter. To this end, she carries an actual book - the Yaoyorictionary - which holds notes on these things in case they slip her mind.
  • Bare Your Midriff: To give her enough space to use her Quirk to its utmost potential, her belly is completely exposed.
  • Big Eater: Justified Trope. In her own words, she has to eat a lot so she can stock up the lipids required for her Quirk to take effect. Therefore, one shouldn't be surprised if they see her wolfing down large amounts of food.
  • Boobs of Steel: She's exceptionally competent in her Heroics, and she also happens to be the most buxom girl in class.
  • Child Prodigy: Being able to use her Quirk as a child means that Yaoyorozu learned the chemical makeup of the objects she created at a very young age, which is no minor feat.
  • Difficult but Awesome: Her Creation Quirk is very useful and versatile, but a Required Secondary Power is that she needs to know the chemical composition of what she's creating to the letter. Fortunately, she's very intelligent (with the highest grades in class) and carries an encyclopedia with her should she need to look up materials.
  • Humble Hero: Despite coming from an overwhelmingly rich background and living in a giant mansion, she never tries to use that to get ahead of others. She is firmly focused on Heroics and will gladly help others progress, regardless of their economic standing.
  • Leotard of Power: Her Hero costume is a revealing one-piece with no leggings, which comfortably sits within this trope.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The design of her Hero costume, required for her Quirk to work to its utmost potential, does her tall, shapely figure a lot of justice, even though she's not the kind of girl to be deliberately associated with that sense of fashion.
  • Nice Girl: Despite coming across as cold and standoffish in her first few scenes, Yaoyorozu is a gentle, demure and compassionate young lady who always looks out for the class' well-being and will gladly help them out should they ask.
  • Ojou: A polite, dignified and and well-mannered girl from a very rich family.

Denki Kaminari - Chargebolt

Stun Gun Hero
Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Electrification
Voiced by Tasuku Hanataka (Japanese), Kyle Phillips (English dub)

A somewhat dull-witted, but energetic and charming young man who has a penchant for trying to look cool. His Quirk, "Electrification", allows him to discharge electricity from any part of his body. The caveat is that going over a certain limit will short-circuit his brain and leave him a jabbering, unintelligible idiot for about an hour.

Kaminari displays the following tropes:
  • Adorkable: He's an endearing, lovable dope who constantly fails at trying to look cool in front of others.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Downplayed. While he does gladly join Mineta's dirty antics and hangs around him on occasion, Kaminari doesn't go as far as the former does.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: His Quirk is all about electricity, and his hairstyle has a small black streak that looks like a lightning bolt. To boot, he has lightning bolts painted all over his Hero costume.
  • Book Dumb: He's not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to his performances in written exams, as evidenced by how his grades in the midterms were the worst in his class.
  • Butt Monkey: Poor Kaminari ends up turning himself into a huge idiot every time he discharges an enormous amount of electricity, and it's played for all the laughs it can gather.
  • Captain Obvious: He tends to behave this way, and is usually ribbed by other characters for it, usually Jiro.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: He doesn't include Jiro in his Imagine Spot of a maid cafe, but from his interactions with her is that his feelings for her are deeper than some shallow perving.
  • Civvie Spandex: His Hero costume is basically a leather jacket and pants that don't offer any substantial body protection. Even when he does get some support items later on, he still looks pretty casual.
  • Cool Shades: He gets a pair of blue ones once he upgrades his costume with disc launchers.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's very easily spooked whenever there's a difficulty in the works, but he always ends up mustering the courage he needs.
  • The Ditz: Downplayed. His aforementioned attack notwithstanding, he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, and is usually portrayed as the 1-A's resident idiot.
  • Dumb Blond: He has blond hair, and isn't outstandingly intelligent as far as 1-A's students go.
  • Elemental Absorption: Aside from producing electricity and being heavily resistant to it, he's also capable of absorbing it, which allows him to tank an otherwise devastating attack from a Villain who also has an electricity Quirk.
  • Elemental Hair: Blond and spiky, with a black streak that looks like a bolt of lightning.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: His upgrades include a flying disc launcher; these discs serve as range improvement for his Quirk's power, as he can now make attacks by aiming at the discs instead of the people he wants to attack. To boot, it also means he won't have his brains fried.
  • Genius Ditz: He may be an academic putz, but he has shown on multiple occasions that he can come up with insightful combat tactics for the field, like using his discs when he defeated Shishikura.
  • Handsome Lech: Kaminari is good-looking and stylish, but far too dorky and goofy to be a proper Casanova.
  • Idiot Hero: He's not the sharpest tool in the shed either way, but overexerting his Quirk makes him a total vegetable.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: He may have fluff for brains most of the time, but he's unfailingly kind-hearted.
  • The Load: If he goes over his voltage limit, he becomes completely useless in combat.
  • Meaningful Name: "Denki" means electricity and "kaminari" means lightning.
  • Mundane Utility: Out of all things, he can use his Quirk to charge smartphone batteries.
  • Nice Guy: Unfailingly friendly and supportive, he's definitely got a big heart.
  • Stupidity-Inducing Attack: His "Indiscriminate Shock: 1.3 million volts" leaves him in a brain-fried, dumb state for about an hour, rendering him a sitting duck for any opponent in his vicinity.

Yūga Aoyama - Can't Stop Twinkling

Shining Hero ☆
Debut: Chapter 3 (Manga), Episode 4 (Anime)
Quirk: Navel Laser
Voiced by Kōsuke Kuwano (Japanese), Joel McDonald (English dub)

A mirror-vain, eccentric and flamboyant young man. His Quirk, Navel Laser, allows him to shoot powerful laser beams from his midriff. If he overexerts, he risks injuring his bowels.

Aoyama displays the following tropes:
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Sort of does this in the License Exam Arc. With two of his badges already hit - a third and he's out - and he and Tenya surrounded by the rival school students, he decides to "take one for the team" and fire his navel laser upwards, hoping to draw all attacks to him so Tenya can succeed. But it works in a very, very different way, drawing the other members of their class to them, so they can all take out the rivals as a team, and as a result, all of them - Yuga included - manage to pass.
  • Agent Peacock: As the most flamboyant member of the class and a Hero-in-training, he certainly qualifies.
  • Attention Whore: He's very outspoken when it comes to grabbing other peoples' attention. Unfortunately, not that many find him that interesting.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may be a foppish dandy who mostly serves as comedy relief, but his lasers are, in fact, rather powerful. To boot, he's shown on more than one occasion that he's much more perceptive than he looks.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: He might project the image of a mirror-vain dandy, but he's in fact very insecure about using his Quirk and worries about harming himself for real with it.
  • Bishie Sparkle: To the point of parody.
  • Butt Monkey: He frequently finds himself on the receiving end of slapstick.
  • Cast From Hit Points: He can only use his quirk to fire blasts lasting about a second each; a longer blast and he risks injuring himself.
  • Chest Blaster: Or, more appropriately, navel blaster. The laser beams are shot from his belly button, and his hero costume includes lenses on his knees and shoulders that allow him to channel them through there as well.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Nobody really knows what his deal is. Not even Horikoshi himself.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: As a foppish dandy who's also a super Hero in training and has a destructive Quirk, he definitely qualifies. His narcissism, however, is mostly played for laughs.
  • Glass Cannon: His laser attacks are pretty powerful, but Aoyama himself doesn't have all that much stamina. To boot, his Quirk causes him some serious stomach pain.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's annoying, haughty and very mirror-vain, but if something means helping his classmates, he'll definitely do it.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: His costume invokes this, being designed as a suit of plate armor complete with a sparkling cape.
  • Making a Spectacle of Yourself: His Hero costume includes very large, red sunglasses shaped like an angel's wings, in keeping with his flamboyant design.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: He gets very uncomfortably close to Midoriya in a few instances a few weeks before the school festival. Fortunately, it was just him having No Social Skills in wanting to tell Midoriya something about his Quirk.
  • Not So Different: He sees common ground with Midoriya over both of them having Quirks that are ill-suited to their bodies.
  • Personality Powers: His Quirk, "Navel Laser", goes hand-in-hand with him being a mirror-vain dandy who mostly cares about himself (also known as navel-gazing).
  • Potty Failure: What ultimately happens if he uses his quirk too much at one time.
  • Power Incontinence: The mirror on his stomach is required to prevent his quirk from going off accidentally, something that, unfortunately, can happen from time to time.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks very much like a male version of his mother, other than his hairstyle.

Mina Ashido - Pinky

Debut: Chapter 6 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Acid
Voiced by Eri Kitamura (Japanese), Caitlin Glass (English dub)

A cheerful and easygoing girl who often has a wide smile on her face. She is very sociable and loves hanging out with her friends. Mina is also energetic yet performs rather poorly when it comes to academics. Her Quirk, Acid, allows her to produce a corrosive liquid from her body.

Tropes exhibited by her include:
  • Action Girl: She's one of the more athletic girls in 1-A, and is also a very good dancer.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: As a result of her acids flowing through her, her skin is pink and the sclera of her eyes are black.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: The ability to create corrosive acid and use it as a weapon isn't exactly something heroes typically use, but Ashido is unambiguously heroic and very amiable.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Inverted. Despite having black sclera, Ashido is absolutely adorable.
  • Boobs of Steel: Her cup size is only superseded by Yaoyorozu.
  • Book Dumb: While she's reasonably intelligent and more extroverted than most of her class, her grades in the midterm exams are only better than Kaminari's.
  • Cute Monster Girl: With pink skin, black eyes and a pair of horns, she's less than traditionally anthropomorphic.
  • Dance Battler: She's an avid, skilled dancer and this athleticism has lent itself very well to her combat training. More humorously, she used her dancing abilities to diffuse some tension when she was in junior high school.
  • Genki Girl: She has a very cheerful and upbeat disposition and tries to make sure everybody else is doing their best.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of small, curved horns on her head.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Unlike the other girls in class, Ashido seems to be more eager to flaunt her looks, most notably when she sat on top of a rock in the sauna, completely naked.
  • My Suit Is Also Super: Based purely on the nature of her Quirk, her suit is acid-proof.
  • Nice Girl: She's shown to be very friendly and supportive towards her peers, and prefers to resolve conflict through non-violent means.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Often shows a wide smile that shows off her friendly personality.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Exaggerated. She's one of the prettiest girls in Class 1-A, she has pink skin, pink hair and her Hero name is Pinky.
  • Poisonous Person: Despite her friendly and extroverted personality, her Quirk, Acid allow her to produce a corrosive liquid while also control the solubility and viscosity of it. Her limit is how her skin will lose its resistance towards it the longer she produces the acid.
  • Sailor Fuku: In flashbacks to Kirishima's junior high school years, she wore the regular school uniform.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Her civilian clothes profile has a sketch of her in short shorts and thigh high stockings.

Mashirao Ojiro - Tailman

Martial Arts Hero
Debut: Chapter 8 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Tail
Voiced by Kōsuke Miyoshi (Japanese), Mike McFarland (English dub)

A discrete, yet hard-working student whose Quirk grants him a prehensile tail that he can use as a third limb. He's also skilled in various martial arts and a strong sense of honor, though he struggles to stand out among his classmates.

Ojiro displays the following tropes:
  • Animal Motifs: Monkeys, due to having a tail and prioritizing agile movements in battle.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Unlike other students, with fighting styles based generally on their Quirks, Ojiro uses traditional martial arts in conjunction with his tail to the utmost effect.
  • Boring but Practical: His Quirk only merely grants him a tail, which isn't particularly visually stunning, but is overall very useful.
  • Character Tic: In the manga, he wags his tail whenever he's happy.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Downplayed. A tail is hardly normal-looking to real humans, but he supplements it with traditional martial arts.
  • Fingerless Gloves: Part of his outfit, as is part and parcel for an eastern fighter.
  • The Generic Guy: It's continuously lampshaded by his fellow classmates and other characters how plain and ordinary Ojiro is.
  • Honor Before Reason: He withdraws from the U.A. Sports Festival when he realizes he has no memory of how he managed to advance and consequently finds himself unworthy of going on.
  • Humble Hero: He doesn't concern himself with praise and recognition and is very aware that he isn't the flashiest student in class, but he does his best to do well, either way.
  • Martial Arts Uniform: His Hero costume is a white kimono with a black belt and Fingerless Gloves.
  • Nice Guy: He's known to be caring, humble and polite, with a concern for other peoples' well-being.
  • Le Parkour: His tail lends itself very well to athleticism, allowing him to make otherwise superhuman dashes.
  • Prehensile Tail: His Quirk grants him a long, thick tail that he can use as an extra limb while fighting.
  • Tail Slap: His tail can also be used for offensive purposes.

Rikido Sato — Sugarman

Sweets Hero
Debut: Chapter 8 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Sugar Rush
Voiced by Toru Nara (Japanese), Cris George (English dub)

A big, strong, tough guy and an excellent pastry chef, Satp is a Hero who gets stronger and tougher by consuming sugar. Unfortunately it also makes him less intelligent, and much like an actual sugar rush, the temporary boost doesn't last long, causing him to become doped up and sleepy afterwards.

Rikido displays the following tropes:
  • The Big Guy: He's one of the tallest and most muscular students among his peers, shorter only than Koda and Shoji. His Quirk makes him even bigger.
  • Chick Magnet: By accident and Played for Laughs; the girls in 1-A love his baking.
  • Dumb Muscle: Enforced. Sugar makes him stronger, but also dumber.
  • Gag Lips: His lips look like a pink rubber donut folded into the shape of a mouth.
  • Heroic Build: He's the only one in his class to have the classical, bodybuilder physique associated with this trope in earlier years.
  • Hour of Power: The boost he gets from sugar lasts only about 3 minutes.
  • Hulking Out: Becomes larger and more muscular the more sugar he takes in. Unfortunately, it also reduces his mental faculties.
  • Light Is Good: He has a bright yellow suit with white gloves and boots, and is a Hero in training.
  • Power-Up Food: For Sato, it's sweets and anything that contains sucrose.
  • Satellite Character: While true for most of the supporting cast, Sato in particular is on the sidelines almost exclusively. His baking skills are the full extent of the Character Development he's had so far, and his only Day in The Limelight was in the Final Exam Arc, in Chapter 67.
  • Shonen Hair: His hair is really spiky, though not as much as Kirishima's.
  • Supreme Chef: Learning to bake seems to have been a Required Secondary Skill for him.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He's one of the biggest guys in class, but in the anime, especially in Japanese, his voice is a rich and raspy tenor instead of the expected Badass Baritone.

Koji Koda - Anima

Petting Hero
Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)
Quirk: Anivoice
Voiced by Takuma Nagatsuka (Japanese), Greg Ayres (English dub, TV anime)

A rather gruff-looking, but actually really gentle and timid young man who's enrolled in the U.A. Hero Course. His Quick, Anivoice, allows him to communicate with and control any type of animal, and can be used to summon them from afar. Consequently, he also likes pets.

Tropes exhibited by Koda include:
  • Alliterative Name: Koji Koda.
  • The Beast Master: His Quirk, Anivoice, makes him one. With it, he's able to command any type of animal to do his bidding.
  • Friend to All Living Things: According to supplementary materials, he likes nature and animals. He even keeps a pet rabbit in his dorm room.
  • Gentle Giant: He's one of the tallest and most heavily built students in his class, but he's also one of the most kindly and timid.
  • Nice Guy: Koda is a genuinely kind-hearted kid. When push comes to shove, he'll even face some deep phobias to help his friends in need.
  • Shrinking Violet: Despite his imposing appearance, Koda is actually quite timid, even being an Elective Mute for a large portion of his first scenes. He gradually grows out of it.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Without any exceptions.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He looks like a rock monster and is very tall and heavily built. However, he has one of the most boyish voices among his peers.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Despite being able to control the entirety of the animal kingdom, Koda has a huge phobia of insects, arachnids and similar animals. So much so that he has to be forced into action to tame them.

Big Three

Mirio Togata - Lemillion

Debut: Chapter 121 (Manga), Episode 62 (Anime)
Quirk: Permeation
Voiced by Tarusuke Shingaki (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo (English dub)

One of the three top students at U.A. and was a former successor for All Might. He is a tall, muscular young man with swiped up blonde hair and blue eyes. Mirio is an extremely goofy and energetic person with eccentric habits. He has an optimistic attitude and smiles rather often,, which has led Sir Nighteye to be a successor as the Symbol of Peace. Mirio worked under the Pro Hero while doing his Hero Work-Studies. He improved to such a level that he managed to overpower more than half of Class 1-A. His Quirk, Permeation, allows him to phase through physical matter.

Lemillion exhibits the following tropes:
  • The Ace: He's so famous and proficient that he's considered one of the top contenders to become a number-one pro Hero in the future.
  • Badass Cape: His Hero costume sports an impressive red cape not unlike that of Superman.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He does have fury, which has come out when he is fighting to protect others as a hero.
  • Big Man on Campus: He's popular with his peers, charismatic and very proficient in using his Quirk.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's feisty, energetic and loves a good brawl. Especially notable when he shouts "Power!" at the top of his lungs after winning a battle.
  • Brought Down to Badass: During the Shie Hassaikai arc, he losses his Quirk due to Quirk Destroying Drug by one of Kai's subordinates. This tragedy has not stopped his hopes of becoming a hero, nor has it brought down his personality.
  • Cool Mask: His costume has a white mask complete with a yellow visor.
  • Heroic Build: He's relatively tall compared to the other students and has an incredibly sturdy physique.
  • Intangible Man: His Quirk, Permeation, allows him to become intangible that enables him to phase through physical matter. He can choose which part of his body can become intangible. He can use this to phase through attacks while also moving through walls and floors. There is also how if he is submerged in the ground, then releases his Quirk; he would pop out of it with great force. It is hard to control which has to lead to him training with it to the point of becoming effective during combat. There are also its weaknesses where his senses are negated, and air even passes through him, causing Lemillion not to breathe. He can't extend it to other people, which means he has to be careful while rescuing people. His clothes also phase through thus leaving him naked.
  • Lovable Jock: He's fairly tall, very athletic and also very amiable and pleasant.
  • Meaningful Name: By Togata's own admission, his Hero name, Lemillion, is a nod to one of his lifetime goals - to save a million people.
  • My Suit Is Also Super: His Hero costume is made of fibers derived from his own organism, to allow it to Permeate along with him and not leave him naked.
  • Nice Guy: Togata is overall very nurturing, amiable and compassionate, which is very evident in his interactions with Midoriya, whom he had just met, and his strong bond with Amajiki.

  1. The last being a British city, the first deviation from the theme.
