My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic/Recap/S2/E09 Sweet and Elite/Fridge

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Fridge Logic: Would it been easier for the bellhop to use his magic to carry Rarity's luggage?
    • For that matter, why does Rarity even need him? She seems to be able to carry quite a lot of stuff with her magic without much effort later in the episode.
      • Because it's funny?
      • That assumes that he is that powerful, which we don't know. Magic varies in strength from unicorn to unicorn, and he seems to be rather young, a teenage colt at best. Young ponies who aren't Twilight "Jean Grey" Sparkle seems to be rather weak.
    • When trying to impress the upper crust ponies, why doesn't Rarity mention she and her friends are national heroes?
      • This. It would not even have destroyed the plot, since they could have found reason to look down on her anyway, but it feels rather fitting behavior for vain and status-conscious Rarity.
      • Because while Rarity does a bit of bragging during her song, she's clearly only singing it to herself. You'll notice she doesn't do much direct bragging of "I'm so great, I'm so marvelous, I make such wonderful things" to the others... in fact she generally tries to be modest to some extent. "Hey guys, I saved your ass from a possessed night-goddess and a chaos demon.", though true, would put her squarely in the braggart column. Not only does it not fit for Rarity too well, blatant bragging often doesn't go over too well at winning affection.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Fancypants clearly comes to Rarity's "rescue" at the end of the day, but there's a few hints that he might have known Rarity to be "rustic" when they first bumped into each other, such as him immediately wanting to introduce her to the upper class. It's possible that he did this intentionally, much the same way that Celestia invited the Mane Cast to the Grand Galloping Gala, to help break the monotony of upper class life (and possibly even to put the more snotty ones in their place). During the derby scene, you can see Fancypants give a knowing look to Rarity, and when the party is crashed by the Mane Cast, he doesn't even pause before welcoming them.
    • Also, Fancypants is clearly well connected. It's possible he knows about the bearers of the Elements of Harmony,
    • It may seem a bit odd that Applejack would not know what a "garden party" was, given even her brief exposure to the upper class as a filly. However, keep in mind that AJ's Aunt and Uncle Orange were high-life society from Manehatten; they're less likely to have garden parties compared to the upper classes of Europe, instead having events like fancy dinners and balls.
    • Fluttershy has learned that acting serenely like a tree is likely a better way to attract the Canterlot wildlife than forcing them to love her.
    • Some of the elite ponies manage to talk Rarity into coming to their events by begging, saying how much her being there would mean. They made it seem like she'd be a big help being there (which if you pay attention, she WAS). Rarity has always had a problem getting in over her head when people ask her for help.
      • She is the Element of Generosity, after all. She also spends much of this episode being somewhat generous with the truth.
    • Why wouldn't someone with his own time machine abuse it to attend the same party several times?
    • Several Youtubers have been able to pitch-shift "Becoming Popular" to make it sound like Pinkie Pie is singing it. The brilliance is that the song's lyrics are just as appropriate for Pinkie as they are for Rarity. Efforts are being made to merge the two into a virtual duet.
    • Rarity's initial design for Twilight's dress looks like something that could draw attention the next time Twilight borrows the Royal Wind Tunnel; Twilight herself prefers the simple outfit she ends up throwing together. Almost as if Rarity's talent came through when she didn't have an ulterior motive like, say, designing a dress in anger more intended to show Jet Set and his bunch what she could do. That first design was not meant for Twilight.
