My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic/Recap/S2/E18 A Friend in Deed/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Accidental Aesop: Remember kids, Stalking is Magic!
    • This is PINKIE PIE though.
  • And the Fandom Rejoiced:
    • Months after being leaked, Pinkie Pie's "Smile Song" FINALLY gets used in the show!
    • With some absolutely gorgeous animation to go with it. Of course, that's pretty standard for this show.
    • And then three other Pinkie songs follow it.
  • Base Breaker: Pinkie's behavior toward Cranky Doodle Donkey. For some is hilarious and funny whereas for others is disturbing and annoying.
    • It's just how Pinkie is, though. and she learns the Aesop by the end.
  • Broken Base: The whole episode (yes, another one). Putting aside Pinkie's song, you either love this episode because it delves into surprisingly mature (by this show's standards) territory and it's hilarious Looney Tunes-esque gags, or you hate it because it turns Pinkie into an unlikable MareFilly and having an ultra-contrived happy ending.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: SMILE SMILE SMILE! Sweet Lord!
  • Deus Ex Machina: Many consider the ending to be this. Matilda is a new character debuting in this episode solely so she can coincidentally reunite with Cranky at the last two minutes of it, and make him smile again since she was the sole reason he's been cranky all this time.
  • Fridge Horror: Though he eventually did find the love of his life, poor old Cranky has wasted nearly his entire life searching for Matilda.
    • Though he did mention to Pinkie that he already had enough friends, so he wasn't completely alone for it at least.
    • Jacks are small, pointy, and easy-to-swallow objects. There's a set of them in the Cake babies' room, and we know one of them likes chewing on things...
    • What's Derpy doing in the snowglobe?
  • Fridge Logic: Given how close Ponyville is to Canterlot, how was it not one of the first places Cranky looked?
    • It's quite possible he DID search there early on, and entirely missed Matilda. He was returning to Ponyville to finally retire his search.
    • On top of that, the episode shows that he's never really takes the time to search. After all, he wouldn't have ended up the way he did if he took the time to look around the room and see the note Matilda left for him.
    • Daisy Jo, the cow, mentions drinking milk. Is it her own milk?
      • Coconut milk?
      • Mrs Cake just foaled, remember. She and Daisy Jo could be trading for each other's excess milk. Plenty of Real Life cultures swear by mares' milk.
  • Get On With It Already: As awesome a song as Smile Smile Smile is, did it really need three and a half minutes of screentime just to re-iterate that Pinkie Pie is friendly and nice?
  • Jerkass Woobie: Cranky Doodle Donkey. Even if his name fits the bill, you can't help but feel sorry for him when he goes through Pinkie constantly humiliating him and causing enough problems for him.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The scene where Pinkie sticks her eyeball through the lock... GAAAAH!
  • Ship Tease: Rarity's name for the wig she gives Pinkie to give to Cranky is called the Dreamboat Special. That said, put into account that it looks almost exactly like the hairdo worn by Steven Magnet...
  • Uncanny Valley: The lighter part of Cranky's muzzle looks like an angry frog. Now you can't unsee it.
