Growing the Beard: Those who've read the story the whole way through generally agree that it gets better the more it diverges from the source material. In particular, Croft's Marty Stu status gets ripped to shreds during the battle with Leliel, when his claustrophobia kicks in and reduces him to a quivering wreck, forcing Rei to jump into the Dirac Sea and bail him out.
- That's assuming you get that far. It's arguably more likely for one to Rage Quit the fic long before that, reducing the beard into a too little, too late fuzz of chin-down.
- If he was claustrophobic, it should have kicked in several times already. That's just an Ass Pull.
Marty Stu: DJ Croft, possibly; Jon Ellison, most likely not.
- Opinions on Croft's Marty Stu status seem to be split between those who hate the series and those who like it. This is still a hotly-debated issue among Eva fans years after the series ended; bringing it up in an Eva community will very likely result in Internet Backdraft.
