Memetic Mutation: "Netflix adaptation" became an almost overnight neologism to denominate In Name Only adaptations in 2017 thanks to the adaptation of Death Note made by the company, which cast L as black despite his paleness being a plot point and making Light much less of a cold, manipulative mastermind. The fact this kept happening in adaptations made by westerners during the late 2010s and early 2020s only reinforced the meme, even in adaptations completely unrelated to Netflix like Amazon's The Rings of Power.
