Night Shift Nurses

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Night Shift Nurses (Japanese title Yakin Byoutou) is a Hentai Visual Novel by Mink that has since been adapted as a 10-episode OVA Anime.

The series centers on the... less-than-ethical gynecologist Dr. Ryuji Hirasaka getting employed at the prestigious St. Juliana Hospital and preceding to subjugate the eponymous Night Nurses into being his sex slaves.

He has been hired by C.O. Narumi by helping her in setting up the hospital's new ward. In the surface, said ward is supposedly only for medical use, for wealthy or "socially powerful (Yakuza, politicians) male patients. In reality, it is a place for nurses chosen by Narumi to treat those patients sexually. Ryuji's role is to train the nurses into becoming the perfect sex slaves Narumi wants to offer.

Any elaboration of this would be unsafe for work. Or Mind

Not to be confused with a classic 1989 American porno named Nightshift Nurses.

Tropes used in Night Shift Nurses include:
  • Accidental Murder: Reimi prescribed a patient the wrong medicine, leading to his death. Hirasaka exploits her guilt to punish her.
  • Anatomically-Impossible Sex: at least some of the antics depicted should result in serious injury.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Apparently if you get raped enough you sort of pick up helping rapists out as a hobby.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Hirasaka pretends to be punishing Reimi for her medical error, but of course he just creating a sex slave for Narumi.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Narumi decides to slowly slash Hirasaka instead of just killing him while ranting about her motives. In the good individual endings, it leads to the nurse with highest favourability rating towards Hirasaka saving him after he falls from the rooftop.
  • Brains and Bondage: Hirasaka is said to be incredibly smart. He also loves to use bondage tools during sex.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: More or less the plot of the series.
  • Cute and Psycho: The titular nurse of Night Shift Nurses: Yu Yagami.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Narumi's answer to be raped is to kill Hirasaka.
  • Driven by Envy: In the middle of her motive rant at the end, Narumi reveals the nurses were not selected because of any special qualities aside of beauty, but because they were living carefree, happy lives, unlike her, and she hated them for it.
  • Driven to Suicide: After her second experiment, Ren Nanase threatens to do it, feeling she can't escape Hirasaka. He manipulates her into not doing it by saying he will tell the world about it, which would destroy Naoya's feelings for her.
  • Dr. Jerk: Ryuji. Although to say he's a Jerkass is a complete under statement.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Ren offers Hirasaka a flower as symbol of their friendship on their first encounter, and despite her friendly demeanour, Hiarasaka only tries to think that is somehow a ploy for her to obtain advantages from him.
  • Fridge Logic: Hospitals have night shifts. How come nobody hears all the screams?
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Both Hirasaka and the C.O. have glasses and are wickedly evil.
  • Happily Adopted: Satoru was adopted by Hikaru's family after his parents died, but he has no idea of it.
  • Hospital Hottie: Well obviously.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard / The Dog Bites Back - when you spend the entire series breaking cuties, one of them is bound to become unstable sooner or later
  • I Need You Stronger: the C.O. wants to kill the doctor for what he did to her. But killing a pathetic washout would be no revenge. So, she gives him a task of breaking her employees, to make him the Complete Monster he used to be.
  • Ill Girl: Satoru is a male example. He has a congenital incurable heart condition that severely restricts his lifestyle, making his sister Hikaru very protective of him.
  • Insistent Terminology: Ryuji constantly refers to his heinous deeds as "experiments".
  • Karma Houdini: In all endings except the harem one, Narumi escapes unscathed any punishment of her attempted murder, which in the bad ending its actual murder. But at least in the individual good endings her revenge against Hirasaka ends up unfulfilled.
  • Lighter and Softer: The spin off Night Shift Nurses: Experiment. That is, by this series' standards.
    • Night Shift Nurses: Kranke, which gives Ryuji some Pet the Dog moments.
  • Meaningful Name: Of all Saint Julianas that exist, the one most likely to name the hospital is Juliana Falconeri (1270-1341), whose patronage is "bodily ills, sick people, and sickness"(her order were basically proto nurses). The thing is, Falconeri was known for using her own lips to suck the infection out of her patients, and one time couldn't receive the Holy Communion because of constant vomiting. One can see by the sex scenes the reason why the name was chosen.
  • Murder-Suicide: In the middle of stalking and slashing Hirasaka, Narumi comments she will kill herself after killing him.
  • Naughty Nurse Outfit: Again, obviously.
  • R-Rated Opening: We see Ryuji playing around with the C.O. in a gynaecologist chair while she looks dizzy and confused. She is completely naked.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Ryuji.
  • Victim Falls For Rapist: Basically, the entire premise of the story is that a Complete Monster rapes and tortures girls until they like it, so that they will assist him in raping more nurses.
  • Villain Protagonist: Ryuji, whose point-of-view is basically almost all we see.
