"Iron Mace" Alvida

"Who's the most beautiful woman in the world?"

Voiced by: Yoko Matsuoka (JP), Kayzie Rogers (EN, 4Kids, pre-Devil Fruit), Kathleen Delaney (EN, 4Kids, post-Devil Fruit), Laurie Steele (EN, Funi)

The lady pirate Alvida was the first enemy that Luffy faced in his travels. A grotesquely obese woman, she thought of herself as the most beautiful woman on the seas (Oda stated that the one thing missing on her ship was a mirror), and would beat those who annoyed her with an iron mace. Luffy incurred her wrath by calling her an old hag, but it only took him one punch to lay her flat.

Sometime after her encounter with Luffy, she obtained and ate the Slip-Slip Fruit (Sube Sube no Mi), which transformed her from her short, fat, unsightly self into a tall, slim, and sultry woman. When people say that she's the most beautiful woman on the seas, now they really mean it.

Currently she is co-captain of the Buggy Pirates.

  • Badass Longcoat: Manages to pull this off against all odds at the start of the Impel Down arc.
  • Bad Boss: Some kind of perfectionist. Wants everything around her to be clean and beautiful and severely punishes henchmen who slack off. Interesting enough, she mellows a lot after becomes a beauty herself.
  • Carry a Big Stick: She uses a large iron mace as her weapon, and can still swing it effortlessly after gaining her new body.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: When she first revealed her new self in Loguetown, more than a few women were smitten along with the men.
  • Fat Bastard: At first, but eventually loses the former part.
  • Gonk: Before she ate her Devil Fruit, she was short, fat, and ugly. Luffy understandably couldn't recognize her after her transformation.
  • Green Eyes: In the anime.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Post-Devil Fruit.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Initially had pretty decent Stout Strength, enough to cave a guy's face in her ship with her large mace. Upon getting her new lean body, she can swing her mace just as effortlessly.
  • Nice Hat: She wears a plume-adorned cowboy hat both pre- and post-transformation.
  • Nigh Invulnerable: Of a different sort than a Logia. Her Devil Fruit made her skin "slippery smooth", effectively giving most of her body zero friction and resulting in attacks and projectiles simply sliding off harmlessly.
  • Only Sane Man: The carnival nature of the Buggy Pirates annoys her quite a bit.
  • Shout-Out: She is based off of Awilda a legendary female pirate who pretended to be a man in order to become a sailor became the leader of a pirate crew and later became queen of Denmark. It is unlikely Awilda existed.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She joined Buggy in order to find Luffy in order to "make him her man". Since he was the first person to ever hit her, this may have some sadomasochistic undertones...
  • Starter Villain: Her initial appearance is in the very first episode of the anime, and the second chapter of the manga, immediately following the story of Luffy meeting Shanks.
  • Villain Team-Up: Saves Buggy and tags along with him after that.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Luffy’s first victim of this. But not the last.


Captain "Axe-Hand" Morgan

"You are duty bound to obey me!"

Voiced by: Banjo Ginga (JP), J. David Brimmer (EN, 4Kids), Brett Weaver (EN, Funi)

"Axe-Hand Morgan" is the first high-ranking Marine officer to be shown in the series. Originally a loyal member of the Marines without a fear of death, once Morgan gained the rank of Captain, he became corrupt and started to act like an asshole for the sake of it. He hated disobedience from his own men, and would often punish them with death, assuming that his rank meant that any order he gave must not be questioned.

He was last seen adrift at sea after escaping from Navy custody.

  • An Axe to Grind: His own hand.
  • Arc Villain
  • Authority Equals Asskicking
  • Bad Boss
  • Determinator: Complete Jerkass he may be, but you gotta admit, standing up to the guy who just singlehandedly butchered an entire shipful of your fellow soldiers, broke your jaw, and currently has you at his mercy, takes some serious balls.
    • Not to mention that in his later cover story, he openly attacked Garp. Sure, he only got away with it because Garp randomly fell asleep, but as famous as Garp is, he had to have known something about what the guy was capable of, and he went through with it anyway. Pretty hardcore.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: His name is derived from a brand of rum. Surprisingly, while Ace and Smoker's names were changed, the 4Kids dub left Morgan's name alone.
    • While this is the case, it is doubtful that it was intentional on 4Kids' part. See Meaningful Name below.
  • Glass Cannon: Don't let the appearance fool you. He's strong enough to slice a fence with his axe, so he's stronger than the typical One Piece Mook. But, it only took like, two of Luffy's punches to knock him out, and Zoro finished him off with absolutely no effort. And this was at the start of the series, long before the Straw Hats started getting REALLY tough...
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: A cigar. He's actually the first character in the series to be shown smoking, but boy oh boy he sure ain't the last.
  • Kick the Dog: Virtually everything he does.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after famed pirate Henry Morgan.
  • Mighty Glacier: Strong enough to split the earth with his axe. Quickly schooled when he can't actually land a hit.
  • Red Right Hand: "Axe Right Hand" is more like it.
  • Shout-Out: Oda admits he is based on a real life pirate Henry Morgan a Royal Navy admiral turned privateer pirate.
  • Smug Snake: He is quite arrogant about being a captain, even though he only got the rank by capturing Captain Kuro, who in fact allowed him to capture a decoy after killing the rest of the crew.
  • Social Darwinist: Believes he got to his position through hard work (although a flashback in the Kuro arc reveals that it's not the case) and demands the respect reflecting that. Also, he believes his orders should go unquestioned because he's higher up the pecking order.
    • Actually, according to one of the databooks, the Kuro incident only got Morgan promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and he genuinely achieved the rank of Captain on his own merit.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Ordered the death of a small child for bring food to Zoro.


Buggy "The Clown"

"All of the world's treasure belongs to me!"

Voiced by: Shigeru Chiba (JP), David Wills (EN, 4Kids), Mike McFarland (EN, Funi)

Buggy the Clown was initially the first real pirate that Luffy encountered early on in his travels. Buggy is a rather gaudy individual who used to be on the legendary Roger Pirates crew, along with Luffy's idol Shanks, who Buggy eventually bore a grudge against for unwittingly foiling a scheme to find a legendary treasure. After Gold Roger's death, the two went their separate ways, and while Shanks went on to become one of the Four Emperors, Buggy hung around the relatively tame East Blue.

His Devil Fruit is the Chop-Chop Fruit (Bara Bara no Mi), which lets him split his body apart as he pleases. After his defeat at Luffy's hands, he teamed up with Luffy's Stalker with a Crush Alvida, and after a failed attempt at revenge, entered the Grand Line in pursuit of the Straw Hats, after which he largely faded from the story. Or so we thought.

  • Arc Villain
  • Art Evolution: Buggy's first appearances emphasized the evil aspect of his appearance, invoking a Monster Clown vibe. However, later appearances depict him (as far as how he is drawn) in a much more comedic light, emphasizing the comic aspect of his character.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Notable as one of the few aversions to the trope in all of One Piece, especially among the pirates. In Impel Down, he ends up gaining an entire crew's worth of followers consisting of its prisoners, every last one of them far tougher than he is.
    • But played straight among his original crew.
      • Considering that he made his way along the Grand Line just fine prior to Impel Down, this isn't entirely subverted.
  • Badass
  • Berserk Button: Whatever you do, don't mention his nose, or you risk being blown up. It doesn't help that he has a tendency to mishear things...
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He gets a massive burst of confidence after the escaped Impel Down prisoners rally around him after his history with Gold Roger is revealed and both they and the Marines believe him to be of comparable strength to his old shipmate, Shanks. Thus he sets his eyes on taking Whitebeard's place as an Emperor.
    • Partially averted in that he is believed to be one of the biggest threats in the One Piece world at the moment. With the emphasis on "believed to be..."
  • Catch Phrase: He inserts "flashy" into almost every sentence he speaks.
  • Circus of Fear: His entire crew follows this trope, sans Alvida and his new crew from Impel Down.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Can beat powerful foes with a bit of teamwork and motivation. Otherwise...
  • Detachment Combat: His power amounts to this, letting him detach and levitate any part of his body. (Except his feet; he can't float them, and he can't levitate too far away from them either) It lets him attack from almost any angle, and he's effectively immune to slashing attacks as well.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Luffy uses him as a shield against Mihawk. Mihawk slashes Buggy to bits, but Buggy easily survives and puts himself back together, thanks to his immunity to slashing weapons. All the while, rather than being scared, he's just angry at Luffy and Mihawk for using him as a cutting board/shield.
    • When he finally reunites with Shanks his only instinct is to rant at and threaten him for screwing him over all those years ago, even if he didn't mean it, and over a bunch of other stuff. Shanks is one of the Four Emperors and one of the most feared, Badass and powerful men on the planet, but Buggy knows him well enough that he doesn't see him that way and acts like they were still kids just yesterday (though to an extent, so does Shanks). His crew, though, don't know any better, and think their Captain is Crazy Awesome for speaking to Shanks like that.
  • Enemy Mine: Teams up with Luffy while in Impel Down in order to help him save Ace. Subverted since he has every intention of abandoning Luffy, but fate seems to have other plans. This is played straighter when he befriends Mr. 3, even if they were never technically enemies.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Luffy. They even have similar sounding names.
  • Evil Laugh: Gyahahahaha.
  • Facial Markings: Standard clown makeup with the addition of a jolly roger on his forehead.
    • Which changes with each of his major appearances.
  • Fake Ultimate Villain: When he was young, Buggy served as a cabin boy on the ship of Gold Roger (the former Pirate King) alongside Shanks (who is now one of the Four Emperors). When this fact came to the World Government's attention, they immediately assumed that Buggy was just as strong as Roger and Shanks and that he had been practising Obfuscating Stupidity the whole time.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He was a fairly weak villain when Luffy meets him. Now, he got a powerful enough crew to make freakin' Whitebeard wary of him, a map to a treasure that will increase his wealth tenfold and a reputation badass enough to make people follow him just by the mention of his name. He's not a nightmare itself but what he gathered made him earn the title, if only in the eyes of the Marines.
  • Gag Nose: It's his real nose.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Separating one's body? What the hell kind of power is that? Oh wait, did you just take a slash from the world's strongest swordsman and just harmlessly detach and reform part of your body? Yeah, not too shabby.
  • Knife Nut: His Weapon of Choice, though battle-axes, flintlock pistols, and katanas will do in a pinch.
  • Laughably Evil: Hey, what do you expect from someone nicknamed "The Clown"?
  • The Load: Some characters have theorized that he was this while on Gold Roger's crew.
  • Magnetic Villain: While Luffy has a natural talent to attract people and making them help him out of sheer will, Buggy is good at leading them by his cunning and luck, at least according to Jimbei.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He's definitely become one of those as of the end of the Whitebeard War Saga.
  • Memetic Badass: Buggy is an odd in-universe example of this being done unintentionally. Because he was on Gold Roger's crew, used to be Shanks's rival, and was one of the masterminds behind the Impel Down prison break, the freed Impel Down inmates decided to follow him, thinking he's much stronger than he actually is. Every single thing he does is somehow taken as further evidence of his greatness.
    • And this has made him one to the fandom too.
  • Neck Lift: Not only can he do this (to a mook, at any rate), his power lets him do it remotely (a la Darth Vader).
  • Not So Different: While he hates Shanks, they do share some personality quirks, such as their love for partying.
  • Not So Harmless: Who would have guessed that the comic villain in the beginning of the series would have made it halfway through the Grand Line? Also, he and his crew were the first villains to actually overcome the previously-unstoppable Luffy in their second encounter, and would have killed him if not for some Divine Intervention.
    • His Devil Fruit ability has been shown to be one of the best when it comes to swordsmen, as it essentially makes him Nigh Invulnerable when dealing with them. Even Mihawk can't hurt him with his sword. It doesn't stop him from easily curb-stomping Buggy when he tries to fight back, but hey, it's still pretty impressive.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He may seem bumbling, incompetent, and just a general blowhard (and he is), but he also made his way across an incredibly dangerous stretch of ocean just fine, has a Devil Fruit that leaves swordsmen helpless against him, and managed to hide that fact when he got taken to Impel Down, making him the only Devil Fruit user in the Level One prison population who isn't locked down with Seastone shackles. Yeah, if he was as incompetent as he appears, he would have been long dead.
    • And then he breaks out of Impel Down and gains a super-powerful crew by hiding behind pirates stronger then him, loudly taking credit for their work, and massive helpings of sheer dumb luck. Which may provide an alternate explanation for how he made it this far.
      • He's also fairly competent with explosives, which means he probably knows something of chemistry.
    • According to Oda, he has the potential to become one of the most powerful men of the One Piece world. He's just too lazy to train himself. Yet.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Shanks and Luffy's red.
  • Shoot Your Mate: He tries to get Nami, who had claimed to be joining his crew, to kill Luffy with an explosive cannonball at point-blank range.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Devil Fruit user, so natch. Ironically, he used to be an exceptional swimmer before he ate his Devil Fruit. In a testament to how much Buggy is crippled by his own cynicism and cowardice, he is pretty much the only Fruit user in the entire series who complains about his weakness and doesn't feel that it's worth the power. Buggy is the sort who, when given lemons, would demand an orange instead of making lemonade.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He's certainly grown a level or two since his first appearance. Most noticeably, he's upgraded his "Buggy balls"—cannon balls capable of obliterating a city block—to "Muggy Balls"—mothball-sized grenades with comparative power. The only problem is he's taken maybe a level or two in badass while everyone else has taken twenty.
  • Villainous Harlequin: Pretty much his entire motif.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Shanks, sort of. He really hates that guy's guts, but at this point the differential in power between the two is such that he can't really do anything about it, so they end up looking something like this.
    • The Marines definitely believe they are this, since they are convinced that because he and Shanks shared a history in Gold Roger's crew and Shanks became one of the Four Emperors, that Buggy must be playing Almighty Janitor. Needless to say, this may end up bringing far more attention than he initially wanted...
      • While he initially didn't want to draw attention to himself, after getting a hoard of powerful criminals to follow him he begins to "dream a little higher" and tries to become one of the biggest threats in the manga.
    • He's starting to gravitate towards this with Luffy, starting from their time in Impel Down. He even saved Luffy's life, along with Jimbei's (albeit reluctantly and unintentionally) from Akainu in the Whitebeard War.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Considering the rest of him, however, it doesn't really stand out.
    • Word of God says that the blue tassels coming out the sides of Buggy's hat are also his hair. In other words, for the entire series prior to Impel Down, he's wearing pigtails.


Kuro "of a Thousand Plans"

"My plans will not fail."

Voiced by: Koichi Hashimoto (JP), Gary Mack (EN, 4Kids), Kent Williams (EN, Funi)

Captain Kuro, also known as "Kuro of the Thousand Plans", is the captain of the Black Cat pirates of East Blue. He is cold and cunning, known for coming up with elaborate plans that never failed. His fighting skills are just as deadly as his mind, as he can move silently at incredible speeds to slaughter people in the blink of an eye. Yet despite all of this, he eventually tired of the pirate life, setting up schemes for his crewmates, and of constantly being hunted down by the Marines. So he hypnotized a crew member into believing he was Kuro and allowed him to be executed in his place stopping the Marine hunt and allowing him to leave his crew. 

He has not been seen since his defeat by Luffy; in the Anime he got a cameo when he is informed of Luffy's first bounty.
  • Arc Villain
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Apart from a design on his suit that apparently represents some feces, he's dressed rather well.
  • Bad Boss: When his plans started to fail, he threatened to kill his crew if they didn't hurry up, and reveals later that he had always planned to kill them all once the plan was complete to keep his identity safe. He even indiscriminately cut them down during one of his attacks, and dialogue from some of his crew members indicate that this tendency was not new.
  • The Butler Did It: Quite literally.
  • Faking the Dead: He left his crew by hypnotizing an underling into believing that he was Kuro and let him be captured by the Marines.
  • Flash Step: Shakushi is as fast as CP9's Soru, but is an imperfect form; unlike them, he can't see where he's going. Not that he cares if everything and everyone in his way dies...
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Notably, he has a tic of frequently adjusting his glasses with the bottom of his palm, fingers bent upwards. Django notes it creeps him out that Kuro still has it, because it signifies he hasn't lost his edge.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's as fast as any Soru user, but one good punch will knock him over.
  • Glass Cannon: He's nowhere near as strong as the villains Luffy faces later on, but you've gotta admit, he had considerable killing power, wiping out most his mooks and crushing rocks with swords. But, once Luffy catches him, the fight's over in no time.
  • Hannibal Lecture: He gives one to Kaya about how over the years he actually hated serving and taking care of her, and that it was all to get his hands on her fortune.
  • Ironic Hell: All of his plans were an effort to escape a life of piracy. Guess what Luffy sent him back to.
  • Irony: His ultimate goal was to abandon his life as a pirate and live peacefully, something he had already gained when he became a butler.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: One katana isn't enough. Try ten, one on each gloved finger.
  • Kick the Dog: Breaks the glasses Kaya gave to him as a gift shortly before almost killing Merry. He also tells her that he hated all the time he spent with her.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Towards Kaya, whom he pretended to be a father figure to.
  • The Ojou And The Black Cat: Kaya's family saved his life and gave him a house. His thanks was an Evil Plan to kill her and take her fortune.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Underneath the moonlight, as he tells about how it brings out the animal in him...
  • Smug Snake: His plans "that could not fail" not only failed, but got him exactly what he didn't want in the end; he's a wanted pirate again.
  • Upper Class Twit: Gives off this impression, as he won't give Usopp or the Straw Hats the time of day.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Despite his collected and smug behavior through almost all of the arc, Kuro gets completely desperate when Luffy's victory becomes obvious, shouting hysterically how his plans simply cannot fail.


"Foul Play" Don Krieg

"I'm the world's strongest man, with the best equipment! That, my boy, is military might!"

Voiced by: Fumihiko Tachiki (JP), Marc Thompson (EN, 4Kids), Andy Mullins (EN, Funi)

Don Krieg is the head of the Pirate Armada, a fleet of fifty battleships that lurked within the East Blue. Krieg himself is well known for his trickery and underhanded tactics, and is supremely confident in the weapons of his overwhelming arsenal. 

He has not been seen since his defeat by Luffy.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: It's an act he puts on.
  • Arc Villain
  • Bad Boss: He's not above killing members of his crew on the spot if they disagree with him. Even Gin gets this treatment when he can't bring himself to kill Sanji and suggests withdrawing.
  • Blade on a Stick: His most dreaded weapon is a giant spear that releases an explosion when swung with sufficient force.
  • Bling Bling Bang: His Wootz steel armor is gilded gold.
  • Bowdlerize: The infamous "poison suction cups" in the 4Kids dub.
  • Calling Your Attacks: One of the few characters in One Piece who does not. Considering he is known for sneak attacks and deception, this is probably meant to be a character note.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: When you can swing a weapon that weighs a ton with only one arm with ease... yeah, he definitely has this.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He is an avid practitioner of this trope, believing that nothing is too dirty a trick if victory is an option.
  • Determinator: Admit it; you did not expect Krieg to still be standing after the beating Luffy gave him. And yet, he did.
    • Also earlier when he shot at Dracule Mihawk, as in the guy who annihilated his entire fleet by himself, and sliced his main ship in half, out of boredom, and had a "swordfight" with "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, which the latter lost without even getting a hit in. Then again, considering Mihawk was just about to leave without so much as an aside glance at Krieg, this borders Too Dumb to Live.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Invoked on him. His crew was upset to see him punishing Gin after all his efforts for the crew.
  • Gratuitous German: Krieg means "war". This then comes off as a Meaningful Name, given his obvious fixation with weaponry and sheer military might.
  • Hotblooded Sideburns
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Said to be a tactic of his.
  • Kick the Dog: When Gin decides to show mercy to Zeff, Krieg poisons him.
  • Jerkass
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Seriously, his suit of armor's got way too many weapons to work. It has several automatic machine guns, a flamethrower, a net shooter, a flail, bombs, a Gatling gun mounted in a shield, a poison gas launcher in the same shield, the shoulder pads can become a spear...
  • Over Nine Thousand: His unused cyborg form was literally called Don Krieg 9000.
  • Powered Armor: A borderline case, at the very least.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: So much so that he got his ass thoroughly kicked by Mihawk and still thinks he's the greatest thing ever.
  • Sore Loser: Take some popcorn, sit down, and admire his hammy rant against Luffy.
  • Technicolor Toxin: His MH5 poison gas is white.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: His reaction to being given the food he needs to stave off imminent starvation? Punch out the specific cook that gave it to him. For absolutely no reason. After he vowed specifically that he wouldn't cause any trouble once he got it.
  • What Could Have Been: His cyborg form which Oda designed, but never used.
  • World's Strongest Man: Declares himself this. He is tough, as mentioned above, but he's not even remotely close to this.
  • Zerg Rush: His crew's main tactic. Luffy calls him out on it too.


Arlong "the Saw"

"Trying to oppose the Fishmen is like going against nature itself!"

Voiced by: Jurota Kosugi (JP), David Willis (EN, 4Kids), Chris Rager (EN, Funi)

Arlong "the Saw" is a Fishman (a species of humanoid fish) who is a huge racist and all-around General Ripper towards humans. In the past, he was a member of the Pirates of the Sun, but after their captain Jinbe became one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he broke off, formed his own crew, and searched for easy targets in the relatively tame East Blue. There, he and his crew enslaved Nami's home island and forced her to work for them as a cartographer, after killing her surrogate mother Bellemere. With her cartography skills and his connections with the Marines allowing him to operate under the radar, Arlong's plan was to turn the East Blue into his own personal empire. He was later revealed to be Madame Sharley's brother. 

Arlong and the rest of his crew are currently imprisoned in Impel Down. (Though with recent breakouts that may no longer be the case) Hachi was the only one to escape.
  • Arc Villain: Gets more significance later on, and was significant in the backstory of Nami, in the form of an Ascended Fanboy of his, but he only appeared as the villain for one arc.
  • BFS: His Kiribachi saw/sword is about as big as he is.
  • Blood Knight: During his days in the Sun Pirates, he was constantly remarked for his excessive brutality towards the humans.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Turns out that his ambition becomes this in the worst possible way—There's an entire Fishman crew that agrees with his world view in Fishman Island, and they're shaping up to be fine villains themselves.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: At least in his backstory in regards to Jimbei's brutality towards humans. Needless to say, he lost those standards as time passed, ironically while Jimbei softened up!
    • He does keep the standards related to not harming other fishmen, though.
  • Evil Laugh: Shaaaahahaha.
  • Exact Words: Nami makes a Deal with the Devil with him to serve as his cartographer until such time as she can scrape together 100 million Berries. He never said he wouldn't tell the Marines where her stash was when she was only 7 million away.
  • Fantastic Racism: He and his crew believe Fishmen to be the "lords of all creation", and that humans are completely inferior.
  • Freudian Excuse: An interesting case while Arlong lived out his childhood in the worse parts of Fishman Island. It's never stated that he ever went to the surface; in fact, out of all his brothers, Arlong was the one who grew up to be a short-tempered trouble maker who wrecked havoc and caused trouble for his own people, especially Otohime, both before and after he joined the Sun Pirates and left the Sun Pirates. Also while his own people suffered much discrimination, and were frequently kidnapped and sold as slaves, most likely by one of Arlong's brothers, mind you. Arlong himself has never experienced this firsthand, he has only heard about it, and knows fishmen that were once slaves. Adding in with this, the one betrayal he had experienced because of humans was not racially motivated. And his sworn brother Fisher Tiger's death was due to him not accepting the blood of a human, which Fisher Tiger himself admitted was wrong, and blamed his own death on himself. Though that didn't stop Arlong from blaming humans anyway for not having fishman blood on a ship occupied by humans, even though there isn't any difference between fishmen/mermaid blood and a human's. Making the way how Arlong is currently his own doing.
    • Arlong has actually seen the surface, in particular Sabaody Archipelago, with his three other childhood friends Hatchan, Kuroobi and Chew. He even modeled his base of operations: Arlong Park in Cocoyashi Island; on Sabaody Park. It's implied a part of him wanted to be like the humans on the surface. This obviously changed during his time with the Sun Pirates, seeing fellow fishmen enslaved and the battles with the Marines, changing him no more unpleasant towards humans than towards his own people, to a Fishman supremacist waging a "holy war" towards humans.
  • Fish People: He and his crew.
  • A Father to His Men: Despite being a General Ripper to humans, he is as attached to his Nakama as Luffy is to his own, thus his ONLY Pet the Dog moment. Because of that, he takes at least four different levels of Unstoppable Rage, each for his three defeated Elite Mooks and one when Luffy uses a fallen Mook as a shield to his bite attack.
  • The Fundamentalist: He once told a young Hody Jones that a "holy war" is being waged between the fishmen and humans.
  • Leeroy Jenkins/Too Dumb to Live: Him charging right back to the Island where Fisher Tiger was killed, and easily dealt with by Kizaru.
  • Lightning Bruiser
  • All Devouring Black Hole Loan Sharks: A literal example of this trope.
    • His name is also a pun, "Ahlong" means loan shark.
  • Making a Splash: Due to his strength, he can throw water drops with the force of a shotgun blast.
  • Manipulative Bastard: When you can make a little girl work for you willingly after killing her mother right in front of her, you definitely qualify for this.
  • Morality Chain: Fisher Tiger.
    • Arlong lampshades it: "If the boss wasn't here, who knows what I'd have done."
  • Nakama: One of the few major villains that have been seen caring for his minions.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: With Jimbei. Both of them were still pretty violent in the original Sun Pirates crew.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money: He bribes marines to keep his operations in the East Blue low-profile, and believes that money is the lifeblood of the world.
  • Shark Man
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his sister, Madame Sharley.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids: When Koala left for her village, he broke the Sun Pirates' mood by saying that she would grow to hate fishmen as any other human.
  • Slasher Smile: Being a shark, it's kind of unavoidable.
  • Super Strength: As a Fishman, he was able to up-end a house very easily.
  • Take Over the World: He's trying to take over all of East Blue.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Was this in the Sun Pirates. While there were some other unsavory characters in the group, he was always the first to suggest violent terrorism towards humans. He was even about to kill a slave just for being a human asking them to send her home.
  • Unstoppable Rage: This is one of his actual superhuman abilities. Although it proved to be not so unstoppable, in the end.


"Tin-Plate" Wapol

"There's no cure for stupidity? Are you trying to imply that I'm an idiot?!"

Former king of Drum Island who ascended to his position after his father's death. Unlike his benevolent father, Wapol was a self absorbed jerk of a king, abusing the citizens of the island for his own profit.

His Devil Fruit, the Munch-Munch Fruit (Baku Baku no Mi), allows him to eat anything he desires without ill effect. He is able to alter himself or create new objects from the materials consumed, such as making a cannon in his mouth or creating children's toys.

Two years later, he's again king of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom.

  • Adipose Rex: He's a King, and his powers revolve entirely around eating anything and everything in sight, so his girth makes him a shoe-in for this.
  • Animal Motifs: The hippo; not only does he wear the skin of a "White Walky", a furry hippo-like creature that inhabits Drum Island, but his submarine and Tin Tyrant Cannon are shaped like hippos as well. During his rise to wealth as a toymaker, almost all the "stages" of his toyshop (stand to store to factory) also have the hippo motif in them. And to top it all off, he tends to use the word "kaba" (Japanese for hippo) in place of Baka.
  • Arc Villain
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Abuses and extorts the people and attempts to execute a doctor trying to help the kingdom.
  • Arm Cannon: Can turn his arms into cannons. He can make one from his tongue too!
  • Become Your Weapon: He can merge himself with a weapon after eating said weapon. This can result in him having cannons in lieu of hands and tongue. He also tries to go over the top by devouring the whole armory of his castle, but thankfully Nami stole the key from him in time.
  • Biological Mashup: Looks to be something he can make with his ability, but subverted when Sanji points out Chessmarimo is just one of his minions standing on the other; only their clothes were fused.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: He doesn't get abilities from people, just from inanimate objects like firearms.
  • Character Development: Starts out as a selfish prince, now he's the owner of a big toy corporation with a Ms. Universe. He reappeared after the Time Skip as a tyrannical king, so no, he didn't learn much.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: What he proved to be for Luffy, getting beaten in a single episode. It would be Luffy's easiest boss battle for quite some time.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: After his exile, he goes through a stint of homelessness before using his powers to make toys and makes far more money than he did as a king.
  • Evil Laugh: Maaahahahaha.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Food, wood, steel, garbage, himself, it's all the same to him.
  • Fat Bastard: Not as much as Nelson or Gecko Moria, but still.
  • Fusion Dance: He can do so to his top minions, and with his own brother in the 9th movie.
  • Gonk: Normally, but he can subvert it at will if the moment needs it.
  • Jerkass: Exceptionally petty, even compared to other villains.
  • Karma Houdini: Though he is essentially exiled from his island, his toy company brought him more riches, adoration, and fame than his time as king. He even got to become king of his own evil kingdom.
  • Lean and Mean: He eats himself to fit through a doorway, and the result ends as a skinny and much better looking him. Bonus points for the Funimation dub having him actually say this verbatim.
  • Morality Pet: In his cover-story, he befriends a little dog that he turns into a robot with his powers. It's still with him even after he becomes a Corrupt Corporate Executive, suggesting that he might have just learned something after all.
  • Start My Own: Basically what he ends up doing. He gets forcibly removed from his World Government-recognized Drum Kingdom, so he creates the World Government-recognized Black Drum Kingdom.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: He married Ms. Universe after his toy company popularity skyrocketed.
  • Villainous Glutton: Given his Devil Fruit, he is of course this.
  • We Can Rule Together: When Luffy has him trapped in his own castle's chimney and is about to send him blasting off, he panickedly started offering Luffy money, jewels, and even the title of vice-king. Naturally, it doesn't work.


"Mr. 3" Galdino

Voiced by: Nobuyuki Hiyama (JP), Tom Souhrada (EN, 4kids), Duncan Brannan (EN, Funi)

One of the officer agents of Baroque Works. He is regarded as the smartest of the officers and only got the position of "Mr. 3" because of that. He ate the Wax-Wax Fruit (Doru Doru no Mi) which allows him to create and control candle wax at will.

He faced the Straw Hats at Little Garden and got defeated, after which he then traveled to Alabasta to try and tell Mr. 0 about them but got fed to a giant aligator.

After the events at Alabasta, he is sent to Impel Down, where he befriends Buggy and assists in a break out, then heads with Luffy to Marineford and finally joins Buggy's crew.


"Mr. 1" Daz Bonez

"Next...Will you try cutting diamond...?"

The highest ranking Baroque Works officer (excluding Mr. 0). He is cold and collected and is a former bounty hunter and assassin. He engaged in "Operation Utopia" and fought against Zoro, where he was defeated. He ate the Dice-Dice Fruit (Supa Supa no Mi) which allows him to turn any part of his body into a steel blade.

He was then sent to Impel Down, where he joined up with Crocodile to assist in a breakout and went to Marineford and finally left with Crocodile.

Bellamy "The Hyena"

"The Lost city of Gold!? The Emerald city!? The great Treasure of "One Piece"!? The fools who go looking for their "dream treasure" cannot notice what's in front of them! In this era of the sea, the ones that do not have real strength... are the ones that are killed by their own imaginations!"

Voiced by: Wataru Takagi (JP), Andrew Rannells (EN, 4Kids), Justin Cook (EN, Funi)

A local pirate who's part of Doflamingo's Pirates, nominally filling in as the crew captain, given that Doflamingo seemed rather uninterested in leading his crew. Looking for information on Skypiea, Luffy runs into Bellamy while in Jaya. Extremly arrogant, he believes that there will come an era where pirates give up on having, as well as pursuing their dreams, going after material treasure instead of traveling the sea for the adventure of it. Bellamy mocks anyone who states otherwise and is very quick to start a fight. However, it's this mindset that ultimately proves to be his downfall. He ate the Spring-Spring/Boing-Boing Fruit (Bane Bane no Mi) which allows him to transform his legs into springs, giving him incredible jumping power.

  • Arc Villain: A relatively minor one, but still.
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: "Oh look, bounty posters of the guys we beat up. Bah, they're fake just to scare us, they can't be real." Now watch me be smacked in one blow by that same guy who beat one of the seven people who's as strong as my boss, and be later be killed by that same annoyed boss for tarnishing his reputation.
  • Asshole Victim: Not to Luffy (he let him live), but to Doflamingo (he didn't).
  • Card-Carrying Villain: "You're mad that I stole gold from that old timer? I'm a pirate!"
  • Curb Stomp Battle: By and far one of the most iconic moments of the series, when Luffy flat out lays him out with one hit. You can argue this would make him an Anticlimax Boss. But really, for someone of his character, it was really all he needed.
  • Dark-Skinned Blond
  • Harsher in Hindsight: While raiding Cricket's home for his gold, Bellamy and his crew wrecked Going Merry as well, for good measure. As it turns out in Water 7, it was this particular injury that sealed her fate and made it impossible to ever fix her.
  • The Hyena: Duh.
  • I Let You Win: His first encounter with Luffy was this simply because Luffy found it pointless to fight him over something so meaningless (in this case a matter of opinion over dreams). However, when Bellamy attacked Cricket and his crew, he made a very big mistake there.
  • Jerkass: Easily one of the more notable ones in the series, with his Establishing Character Moment being stabbing Roshio the Executioner in the hand with a knife, then tossing him out the window, before killing him... Over a game of poker to which he states he cheated. To make it worse, he wasn't even cheating in the first place.
  • Mugging the Monster: Technically, it was the friend of the "monster" he mugged, but the end result was the same.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Shares the name with real life pirate Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy.
    • He is, however, very much unlike his namesake, who was well known for his mercy and generosity toward those he captured on his raids, earning him a second nickname the "Prince of Pirates". (His first nickname, Black Sam, is from not bothering with the then-fashionable powdered wig in favor of tying back his long black hair with a simple band.)
  • Paper Tiger: Bullies other pirates on the island of Jaya and has spring-based powers with enough concussive force to destroy buildings. Protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and his first mate Roronoa Zoro let themselves get beat up by him under the idea that he has not wronged them. Once he does, however, Luffy challenges him, and he gets stopped cold with a single punch.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Bellamy pulls on off while fighting Luffy. Fat lot of good that did for him. And here's the Japanese version of it:

Bellamy: Those guys are your FRIENDS!? [laughs] Oh I see. That old man and his monkeys are the same species as you! A pack of idiots who believe the lies of some 400-year-old ancestor! What City of Gold? What Sky Island? THE ERA OF DREAMS IS OVER! YOU'RE A DISGRACE OF A PIRATE!

Bellamy: So you want the gold back, huh? Because Old Man Cricket's your friend? WAKE UP! He's nothing but a decrepit fool who spends all his time chasing after a 400 year old lie! But that's probably what you like about him, right? You like to call yourselves pirates, but you know nothing! There's no City of Gold! No island in the sky! Just oceans and ships and the men who sail them!


"God" Eneru

"God does exist in this world... and that god is me."

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (JP), Wayne Grayson (EN, 4Kids, Grand Adventure only), J Michael Tatum (EN, Funi)

An inhabitant of the sky whose Cloudcuckoolander tendencies went a little too far. After eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit (Goro Goro no Mi), a Logia type that gives power over electricity, he began to believe that he was literally a god and usurped control of Skypiea from its rightful ruler. He uses his Sinister Surveillance to smite those who would defy his will, whether they be Skypieans or the Shandian Tribe, whose ancestral homeland he made his own. By the time of the Straw Hats' arrival, he was putting his plan of returning Skypiea to nothing before departing for the promised land, "Endless Vearth", along with four other chosen ones into motion.

  • Affably Evil: Chats calmly with Robin about archeology and the beauty of Shandora; he also thinks he's a god and has a fondness for destroying islands. He also challenges some of his servants to guess how many will be left at the end.
  • Afro Asskicker: Under his cap is a huge perm, revealed in Oda's notes.
  • A God Am I: Played with in that "God" is actually just the title of Skypiea's ruler, but thanks to his Devil Fruit, he thinks he's an actual god.
  • Arc Villain: One of the most powerful antagonists, who introduced a type of Haki, but he's never appeared in the series since his defeat in his own arc. Still, he's very impressive, and in fact has the second-best combat performance of any Arc Villain in this series, after Magellan below.
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: Incredibly arrogant. He once took a nap in the middle of a battle, confident that his opponent could not possibly hurt him. He was correct.
  • Axe Crazy: Casually murders a lot of people, including his own men, because he's playing a "Survival Game" of his own invention.
  • Big Bad: Of the Skypiea Saga.
  • Blond Guys Are Evil: Based on the Mayan belief of a blonde, fair-skinned savior.
  • The Chessmaster: He turned a Shandian uprising, and the Straw Hats' adventures, by having his men pounce on both sides into a "Survival Game", predicting the likely outcome in an hour of his enforced Battle Royale With Cheese to five people standing. Of course, this is all to find people worthy enough to join (or rather, survive) his genocidal campaign against Skypiea aboard the Maxim into Fairy Vearth.
  • Cool Starship: The Ark Maxim. It's made of gold!
  • Evil Laugh: Yahahahaha.
  • Fatal Flaw: His arrogance and callousness; if he hadn't disregarded the Straw Hats so completely and been so willing to let die/kill his own men, he probably would've killed Luffy.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: I-Isaac?!
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: During Luffy's first fight with him, he managed to graft gold into the shape of a ball around Luffy's arm and kicks him off the Maxim to get him out of the way. Luffy however manages to get back in the air and uses said ball to not only stop Eneru's energized death ball that would've destroyed all of Skypiea (as the ball acts a conductor taking in all of the electricity and neutralized by Luffy's rubber body). But then uses it to deliver a monster of punch to Eneru crashing him into the golden bell, both defeating the villain and achieving his goal of ringing it.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite being one of the most psychotic and unrepentant villains in One Piece, Eneru gets away with nothing more than a few bruises from Luffy, actually achieving his original goal following his defeat. By comparison, other Big Bads usually had all their evil dreams and goals completely crushed, except for Laughably Evil Buggy the Clown, who only suffers many comedic humiliations.
    • Of course, had he been beaten and left on Earth, he would have still been an incredibly dangerous force to deal with. With his traveling to the Moon, he removed himself from being a future threat. So while it is a Karma Houdini, it's one that is justified. Plus he didn't bother to attack Skypiea again, so hey better victory then most.
  • Lack of Empathy: Eneru cares only about himself; everyone else is no different from a common rock as far as he's concerned.
  • Morality Pet: Rescues a race of cute robots from space pirates during his cover story, and ends up living on the moon with them.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Allegedly based on Eminem.
  • Oh Crap: Has an absolutely epic one when he realizes that Luffy is immune to his attacks. In the manga, the face he made took an entire page, while the anime was a bit more low key about it. Lots of chapters later, it was reused when Perona found herself in a similar situation regarding Usopp, thus the fandom now calls this expression "The Enel". Hey, it even works as a Trope Namer.
  • One-Man Army: Not only insanely strong, he's able to sense every being in Skypiea, phases through most attacks, has instantaneous movement over several kilometers, and can form attacks powerful enough to leave meteor-sized craters as collateral damage. And his Mantra allows him to predict an enemy's movement and strategies to beat him before they can even see him. He's pretty much invincible, save for his single weakness and lack of experience in dealing with people who can actually hurt him.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Everything about him, pretty much.
  • Shock and Awe: The Rumble-Rumble Fruit is rather good at doing both.
    • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Can turn into a giant electrical being with the Amal technique. Sadly, it's also a Clipped-Wing Angel.
    • Bolt of Divine Retribution: El Thor, which he uses to smite any and all who defy him.
    • Clipped-Wing Angel: 200 Million Volt Amal looks impressive, but it only provides Luffy with a bigger target.
    • Combat Clairvoyance: His Mantra (actually a form of Haki) allows him to read opponents' minds and predict their movements; when he combines it with his Devil Fruit's ability to feel the electromagnetic currents in the air, he's effectively omniscient.
      • Sinister Surveillance: His Devil Fruit-enhanced Mantra enables him to keep tabs on every person on Skypiea.
    • Convection, Schmonvection: Averted in one notable instance: He uses the heat created from a continuous surge of lightning to melt and reshape his staff, which is made of pure gold.
    • Death From Above: Having his powers be derived from lightning, this is inevitable. His strongest technique, Raigou, can wipe out whole islands in one go.
    • Instant Death Radius: Thanks to his enhanced Mantra and the nature of his powers, he can attack people far outside of their range.
    • Light Is Not Good: The color of Eneru's lightning (yellow in the manga, bluish-white in the anime) are normally good guy colors. He also wears a lot of white and considers himself to be God.
    • Magical Defibrillator: He IS one. When a well-placed chest shot from Wiper's Reject Dial stopped his heart, he used his own logia powers to restart it.
    • Nigh Invulnerable: Being a Logia made of lightning, he's completely invulnerable to strikes not imbued with Haki; Luffy's rubber body is the one exception.
    • Psycho Electro: Even for this series, Eneru is downright insane.
    • Shaping Your Attacks: Hino (a bird), Kiten (a wolf), and Jambure (a dragon).
    • Superpower Lottery: The Rumble-Rumble Fruit's powers are right alongside the Tremor-Tremor's (Whitebeard's fruit) in both destructive power and range, and the second fastest fruit we've seen so far after the Glint-Glint (Admiral Kizaru's fruit). It's even been stated to have a reputation of actual invincibility, as nothing but the Gum-Gum Fruit can survive a face full of lightning.
    • Theme Naming: Almost every attack he has is based on various lighting and thunder deities.
    • Yellow Lightning, Blue Lightning: An interesting case in that it's both: Eneru's lightning powers are colored yellow in the manga and a more realistic bluish-white in the anime.
  • Smarter Than You Look: He outwitted Robin. She didn't see it coming.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: Subverted. He is one of the most powerful villains ever introduced in One Piece, easily dispatching every single opponent he went up against with no effort whatsoever, and would have a bounty of 500 million Berries if he were a pirate, more than any other known pirate bounty at this writing. The only reason Luffy didn't die instantly was because he's a Rubber Man, and thus immune to Eneru's powers.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Eneru vs. Enel vs. Ener. Supposedly, they're all fine, but the first is the official spelling used consistently in the English versions.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: Eneru came to Skypiea after destroying his home island of Birka.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Poor Robin! Summed up by this quote:

"There's nothing I hate more in this world than a cold, calculating woman."

    • Zoro angrily tells him that "She's a woman!" shortly after she's struck, and he coldly responds that he's aware of it.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Did this to his own men. Shoot, he did this to the entire island of Skypeia!


Foxy "The Silver Fox"

"We, the Foxy Pirates, challenge you, the Straw Hat Pirates, to a Davy Back Fight!"

Voiced by: Bin Shimada (JP), <we'll find out in 2012> (EN)

Foxy "The Silver Fox" is a notorious pirate for having one of the largest crews in the series, together with one of the lagest ships. He has such because of his mastery of the "Davy Back Fight", a sportive event between pirates where the crews wage their own Nakama. Althought not very combat prone, Foxy is a very scheming and cunning man (which is kind of hard to believe of him, at a glance), making use of different kinds of weapons, disguises, and items, together with his Devil Fruit powers of the Slow-Slow Fruit (Noro Noro no Mi), which allows him to slow everything his beams touch for 30 seconds.

  • Affably Evil: Unlike his predecessors, he honestly cares for his crew, gets upset easily, and doesn't Kick the Dog. The only evil thing about him is that he's a Dirty Coward and that he takes away members from other crews. In fact, he's probably the only Anti-Villain major enemy.
  • Animal Motifs: Take one guess. It's as subtle as a brick to the face.
  • Arc Villain
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Always smiling regardless of expression.
  • Evil Laugh: Fehfehfehfeh.
  • Expy: Looks like Boyakki from Yatterman, while Porche looks like Doronjo and Hamburg looks like Tonzura.
  • Gag Nose: Looks like one, but he naturally has a red nose.
  • Giant Mecha: The Gorilla Puncher #13; the anime version has several more, such as the dodgeball cannon "Bull's Eye-kun".
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: The anime eventually turned him, Porche, and Hamburger into this.
    • May be intentional, see Expy above.
  • Gonk
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Luffy reflects his Slow-Slow Beam at him, then knocks him into the water while he's helpless.
  • Not So Harmless: Until the Captain Duel, he was regarded as a great joke. Many a "Holy Shit!" was uttered when he promptly beat the snot out of Luffy due to the pure cheapness of his power. In fact, he landed more hits on Luffy than Eneru ever did... too bad Luffy is immune to blunt attacks.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: What he gives Luffy, although it's largely because of his Time Stands Still powers.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: One of his many techniques is known as the "Foxy Face Transformation", referencing the shapeshifting abilities that mythological kyuubi are supposed to have. Instead of flawless transformation, it's this trope, which only Luffy would (and did) fall for.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Even without the Noro Noro Beam, his "Megaton Kyuubi Rush" technique can match Luffy's "Gomu Gomu Gatling" blow-for-blow.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Will get into fetal position if he hears so much as one insult thrown his way. Luckily, equally offhanded praise will get him back up immediately.
  • Time Stands Still: His Noro Noro Beams allow him to slow anything they touch for thirty seconds. Besides the obvious use in enemies, he adds very different (and deadly) uses to them.
  • Trying to Catch Me Fighting Dirty: Him and the words "fair fight" go together like water and oil.
  • Weak but Skilled: Probably the most evident example in the series.


Rob Lucci

"They were criminals, so I killed them in name of justice... As soldiers, weakness is a sin. They surrendered to evil, and caused a crisis in the kingdom. That type of soldier doesn't deserve to live. So they're dead."

Rob Lucci is the strongest member of Cipher Pol #9, a top secret group of eight assassins tasked with various undercover operations for the World Government. He is calm and ruthless, even refraining from the Evil Laugh, a staple among One Piece villains. He and his group are masters of Rokushiki (literally Six Forms), a martial arts fighting style based on six different superhuman techniques, and he and the rest of CP9 gave the Straw Hats some of their toughest and grueling battles yet. He ate the Cat-Cat Fruit (Neko Neko no Mi), Model: Leopard.

  • Animorphism: Ate a Zoan-type which allows him to turn into a leopard or huge leopard-man at will.
    • Bishonen Line: Sort of. He can use Life Return to make his large bulky leopaard-man form more proportionate to his thin human form, making him faster and more agile.
    • One-Winged Angel: His leopard-man hybrid form basically serves as this, granting a boost to his already phenominal strength. Although he's very slightly slower in this form due to its large size.
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: To the letter. The realization that a pirate can defeat him is his Oh Crap moment and the only time when he loses composure. He's subtly different from typical exampes of this trope in that, instead of being a total loner, he actually considers the rest of CP9 his Nakama and his standard ice-cold demeanor warms up somewhat when there are no outsiders around.
  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: Gained his reputation for an instance in which he does this. When he was thirteen. Just before being bombarded with cannonfire.
  • Badass: More quiet and unhinged than the typical, but he is still this. Slaughtering 500 soldiers at age 13? Check. A ventriloquist for his Non-Human Sidekick? Check. Having a douriki twice as high as the next strongest member of his squad? Check. Able to shoot a person to death with merely his index finger? Check. Can Flash Step? Check. Can quintuple jump? Check. Can manipulate your Razor Wind kick into the shapes of a bird and a spiral? Check. A Manipulative Bastard when he wants to be? Check. Fighting and nearly killing Luffy on physical force alone? Check.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Gained a suit to go along with his Nice Hat after The Reveal. When he dons the Badass Longcoat he almost rivals Crocodile in this department.

  • Blood Knight: While serving the World Government comes first, Lucci wishes no other reward for his service than the blood of their enemies. He almost never actually smiles unless he's in the middle of battle, and even allows Gonbe and Chimney to trail Spandam's group so that they will lead the Straw Hats right to him.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Thanks to Rokushiki.
    • Badass Abnormal: On top of which, he has a Zoan-type Devil Fruit ability that lets him turn into a leopard, making him even stronger and faster.
  • Double Jump: Geppou, literally Moon Step.
  • The Dragon: A classic example. His chief, Spandam, who sets the events of the Enies Lobby arc in the motion, is weak and cowardly, leaving all of the actual fighting to Lucci and the other CP9 agents.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Lucci is perfectly willing to massacre everyone branded an enemy by the World Government, and directly states that he's going to chase Nico Robin to the ends of the world and eliminate her after he beats Luffy, but brutalizing her when she's a defenseless prisoner is too much even for him, orders or not. Probably why Lucci gets a redemption cover story and Spandam gets a double serving of Fate Worse Than Death.
  • Finger-Poke of Doom: Shigan (literally "Finger Gun") and all its variants.
  • Flash Step: Soru, literally "Shave".
  • Genius Bruiser: Is quite intelligent and perceptive, on those occasions when he bothered to use his brain.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has an enormous scar in the rough shape of the World Government symbol across his back, which obviously symbolizes his dedication to their brutal practices.
  • Jack of All Stats: Master of all Six Forms techniques, while his colleagues tend to specialize in one, albeit not to the exclusion of others.
  • Kick the Dog: Invoked. He tells Paulie that if The Reveal that his coworkers are WG assassins is too hard to believe, he'll step on Iceburg's face to convince him.
  • Knight Templar: Believes in "Dark Justice", which holds that ANYONE who fails to fulfill their duty deserves to die. When he was only 13, he killed 500 soldiers captured by pirates for being too weak. Let's just say that by the end of the arc, he's forced to rethink his position.
    • He seems to mellow down somewhat in the CP9 side story, after the government allows Spandam to frame them for failure. He still remains ruthless and brutal enough to terrify the citizens that CP9 save from marauding pirates. But take note that if he still fully believed in Dark Justice, he should have turned himself and the rest of CP9 in. Well, Nice Job Fixing It, Spandam.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Invokes this trope, being very tall, massive, and tough in his leopard-man form, yet remaining one of the fastest characters in the series. In a subversion, he must change into a smaller and slimmer variation of this form for maximum speed. Even without his Devil Fruit powers, though, he more than fits the trope thanks to his mastery of Rokushiki.
  • A Load of Bull: Wears the bull costume in the Galley-la mansion raid.
  • Made of Iron: Tekkai, literally "Iron Shell". A technique that involves hardening the muscles so that they are as strong as iron.
  • The Mole: CP9 was tasked with investigating Water 7's mayor Iceberg while undercover. He even pretended to be a high pitched, friendly ventriloquist.
  • My Government Right Or Wrong: It is clear that Lucci sees what a disgusting slime Spandam is, and there are some hints that he doesn't like the things he is commanded to do, but obedience to the World Government, as embodied by its highest-ranking representative, trumps all for him. He draws the line when he feels that his Nakama were betrayed by WG.
  • Nice Hat: A top hat.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: His pet pigeon Hattori.
  • Oh Crap: Not as over the top as most villains, but his reaction at seeing Luffy stay up after taking his strongest attack for the third time during their fight pretty much tells you he's screwed.
  • Power Level: An astonishing 4000, the highest in the history of CP9; and that's just in his human-form.
  • Razor Wind: Rankyaku, literally "Tempest Leg", and all of its variants.
  • The Reveal: As a government operative.
  • Sadistic Choice: When he breached the Tower of Justice and allowed it to flood, knowing that the waters would reach the Straw Hats, he gave Luffy the choice of going to save them (and drowning in the attempt) or fighting him, which would give them a slim chance of survival. Luffy rebuffed him saying they'll survive anyway, and if he went for them, Lucci would kill them anyway.
  • The Stoic: Unless he's fighting.
  • Tyke Bomb: All of the CP9 members are apparently this.
  • The Voiceless: Until The Reveal, that is.
  • Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him: For a ruthless killer, he has a surprisinly poor grasp of the fact that just leaving your targets disabled, trapped, and awaiting excruciating death never works.
    • That being said, sparing the crew was part of the deal he struck with Robin.
  • You Have Failed Me...: Literally kicks Nero off the Sea Train for losing and trying to kill Franky (whom they need alive)


Spandam

"The most important thing is my life!!! My promotion! If I let them go freely, who will protect me when something happens?"

The chief of CP9 and Enies Lobby, Spandam is Rob Lucci's superior officer, though he's actually weaker than even a normal marine. A clumsy, cowardly, but power-hungry swine, he works only to further his career. When he was a member of CP5, he convinced the leaders of the World Government to let him seek out the blueprints of Pluton. He possesses a broadsword named Funkfreed that "ate" the Elephant-Elephant Fruit (Zou Zou no Mi), allowing it to turn into an elephant.

  • Amusing Injuries: In his first appearence, he gets blown up by a stray cannonball. And it doesn't stop there.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Inverted. He's the weakest guy on Enies Lobby.
  • Big Bad: Of the CP9 Saga.
    • Non-Action Big Bad: True, he has that Elephant sword, but it's clear it's a last option security measure. In fact, what could be a truly powerful sword is almost completly worthless in his hands when he's forced to use it.
  • Butt Monkey: He's always getting smashed in the face in Franky's flashback. He has no respect from his men. Kalifa considers his very existence "sexual harassment".
  • Cool Sword: It's his ONLY advantage. It transforms into an elephant.
  • Dirty Coward
  • Evil Laugh: Wahahahaha.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Having his back broken by Nico Robin, the same woman who escaped his father and suffered heavily at his hands. And being hunted down his co-workers, specifically Rob Lucci for framing them.
  • General Failure: He is surprisingly inept for someone in his position. It is implied he got to it through family connections, since his father, Spandine, was chief of Cipher Pol #9 before him. But...
  • Generation Xerox: Spandine was just as much of a Smug Snake General Failure as Spandam is now, the only difference is that Spandine cares about his men, and actually evacuates the non-archaeologist citizens from Ohara (only for Sakazuki/Akainu to kill them anyway).
  • Is This Thing Still On?: Mistakenly blabs that he'd let everyone on the island die in order to further his career while his Den Den Mushi is transmitting, then tries to cover it by claiming to be Luffy. No one is fooled.
  • Jerkass
  • Laughably Evil: Played with. Crazy accidents are always happening to him, his agents don't respect him, but he's one of the nastier characters in the series.
  • Mask Power: Wears an iron mask on his face, which doesn't really cover most of his features. He wears it because his face had been permanently damaged by a young Franky years prior to the series' present.
  • Made of Iron: He's the weakest member of CP9. So how the hell does he survive all the punishment fate sends him?
  • Manipulative Bastard: Amazingly, despite his moments of incompetence, he still managed to exploit the paranoia of the Five ElderStars. As in the chief authority of the World Government. He was then given an assignment on retrieving the blueprints of Pluton, which Spandam wanted to use to remove the authority of the Five Elder Stars and Take Over the World.
  • Oh Crap: Does this quite a few times as the situation on Enies Lobby deteriorates.
  • Power Level: 9, and the average Marine soldier's is 10.
  • Smug Snake: Barks a big game, but Fukurou points out that he is weaker than the avarage Marine soldier. He is even weaker than a Mook.
  • The Starscream: To the Five Elder Stars.
  • Take Over the World: Has stated he wants to do this earlier in his career as head of CP 5. Now as Director of CP9, it's hard to say if he still has those ambitions, but his dreams are still pretty grandiose. He could've been attempting this step by step with Robin's capture. But for now, he's trying to avoid being killed by a vengeful CP9 for framing them.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He assaults Robin while she's bound by chains. And he doesn't just hit her once or twice; he flat-out assaults her. Repeatedly. Also, the way he was drawn in that same episode was darker and more psychotic than his usual Butt Monkey atmosphere, which emphasized on this.


Kaku

"Don't underestimate the full destructive power of a giraffe!!"

Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (JP), Jerry Jewell (EN)

One of the Elite members of the Cipher Pol #9 and second only to Lucci, and is also the youngest. Has a peculiar, "squared body" and a very long nose, similar to Usopp's. He too can use the Rokushiki and is a master of Rankyaku, to the point that he's developed the Yontoryuu (Four-swords style) using two katanas and his legs. He also ate the Cow Cow Fruit (Ushi Ushi no Mi), Model: Giraffe and can turn into a Giraffe-man, but desipte his ridiculous appearence, he's still powerful and dangerous if not moreso.

  • Animorphism: He can turn into a "were-giraffe" with his Devil Fruit powers.
  • Affably Evil: He's really a nice guy, but works for the bad guys. In fact, in fan polls, he consistently ranks as the most popular villain in the entire series.
    • So much so, that before The Reveal and a showcase of his abilities, many fans thought he might be the Shipwright for the Straw Hats.
  • Becoming the Mask: His flashback to his career as a carpenter after being beaten by Zoro, showed that at least he of all the [CP9] had some regrets.
  • Berserk Button: Don't laugh at him too much or mock giraffes. Seriously!
  • Blood Knight: He's one like Lucci; he really enjoyed his fight with Zoro, but he's cheerful.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Even if sometimes he actually invents the name for the attack on the spot. See Pasta Machine.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Thanks to Rokushiki.
  • The Comically Serious: His complete seriousness about his silly, but still powerful, Devil's Fruit is quite amusing.
  • Double Jump: Geppou, like Lucci's.
  • The Dragon: To Lucci's quasi Big Bad and/or Dragon-in-Chief role.
  • Dual-Wielding: He uses shirasaya swords along with the Razor Wind from his legs, which he says makes him a wielder of "four sword" style.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Zoro: they're both the swordmasters and their sword technique is the best of their groups.
  • Finger-Poke of Doom: And he can do that with his nose. No Kidding...
  • Flash Step: Not only he can use Soru, but he's also very fast.
  • Gag Nose: And so hard that it can pierce stones!!!
  • Genius Bruiser: While he was an undercover assassin, his shipwrighting skills were legitimate. His assessment of the Going Merry was accurate.
  • Graceful Loser
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Zoro wonders whether, as he is a spy, he might be wrong about the Going Merry. He points out that he isn't, and is proved correct.
  • Kick the Dog: Dumping the Going Merry into the sea during Aqua Laguna.
  • Lean and Mean: He and the three other members are the only normally proportioned and regular-sized people in CP 9.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Was even nicknamed Yamakaze (Mountain wind) for his great speed.

  • Meaningful Name: Kaku means "squared".
  • The Mole: In Water 7 with Lucci.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being an antagonist.
  • Nice Hat: Always wears a baseball cap of some sort. Except when he's a giraffe.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He cut the Tower of Justice in half in a fit of rage with Razor Wind Amanedachi.
  • Power Level: The second highest of CP9 at 2200.
  • Punny Name: His attacks are mainly puns on the various combinations of "kaku" and kirin (giraffe). Eg: Kama Kirin refers to Kamakiri (the mantis) and the giraffe.
  • Razor Wind: A real master of Rankyaku, they can be a small shower of blades, a drill-like attack, a shuriken-shaped blast, and even a circular giant slice.
  • The Reveal: As a government operative.
  • Reverse Grip: How he holds his katana.
  • Running Gag: He's often mistaken for Usopp. And he's constantly mocked as a giraffe.
  • Tyke Bomb: All of the CP9 members are apparently this.
  • Those Two Bad Guys: He's often seen with Jyabura.

Oars the Devil

A humongous Giant from a clan known for its evil nature and who rampaged throughout the world 400+ years ago, only to die of the cold in the Northern Continent, his body was found by Gekko Moria and was redesigned by Dr. Hogback to be Special Zombie #900.

When Moria stole Luffy's shadow, and put it inside Oars, Moria felt that he had found the perfect zombie to become Pirate King with, but after a incredible battle with the Straw Hat Pirates, Oars was crippled, and his shadow eventually found its way back to Luffy, re-dying once more. However, before he died centuries ago, he had at least one child, and his name lives on with his grandson Little Oars Jr.

Absalom

Voiced by: Hiroaki Miura (JP)

One of the main antagonists of Thriller Bark, and a pervert on par with Sanji. Leads the Mooks and Elite Mooks in the arc, and kidnaps Nami to be his bride. Trades blows with Sanji because he ate the Clear-Clear Fruit (Suke Suke no Mi), allowing him to become an Invisible Man and turn everything he touches invisible as well.

  • And Now You Must Marry Me: To an unconscious Nami.
  • Altar the Speed: Justified, as his previous attempt at marrying Nami resulted in the room being crushed, and his guests killed. However, even with this in the second time, Oz's rampage makes it impossible for him to actually kiss the bride. Touches on The Determinator as he does it countless times.
  • Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Towards Nami in a wedding dress. Results in him and Sanji both trying to make speeches, and stopping mid-speech to comment 'Oh, I thought she was an angel/goddess/siren' at multiple instances.
  • Badass Longcoat: It's quite regal.
  • Bad Boss: Played with. He lets his General Zombies come to his wedding, and seems distressed to see them all killed by Oz in one go. He's ready to punish, maim and kick his sub-ordinates when they insult him, but they do call him 'pervert' a lot, so it's reasonable, and they are zombies after all.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call him a pervert. Doesn't help he has a Delayed Reaction to it sometimes, allowing for multiple instances to build up a rage.
  • BFG: He has a pair of pulse-activated bazookas strapped to his arms which he turns invisible.
  • Biological Mashup: A human body, with the face of a lion, muscles of a bear and gorilla, and the skin of an elephant
  • Body Horror: Allowed Hogback to cut him open and graft on pieces of animals to help his combat abilities.
  • Dark Messiah: Sort of. He seems to be revered by the zombies under his command, but most of them seem to know about his quirks and strangeness. They're still loyal and respectful to him, though. The General Zombies even agree to go to his weddin.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Sanji. The two even take a break during the battle to gush over how great Nami looks in a wedding dress. Not to mention they both have the same desires, lusts and practices.
  • Hand Blast: His Dead Man's Hand attack. Though its actually due to a pair of bazookas he strapped to his arms.
  • Handsome Lech: Debatably worse than Sanji, since he actually does the stuff that is -not- OK.
  • Hypocritical Humour: Calls Sanji a pervert. His answer? A kick to the face and a cry of "I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THAT FROM YOU, BASTARD!!"

Those Two Zombies: HE'S GOT A POINT!!

  • Incredibly Lame Pun: Guilty of many of these. As Oda stated, even his sense of humour is invisible!
  • Invisibility: His DF ability, allowing him to become an invisible man. He can also turn anything he touches invisible.
  • Oh Crap:

Sanji: With all those animals in you... you'll make formidable mince meat...
Absalom: -becomes momentarily visible from fear, and panics, kicking Sanji violently-.

  • Made of Iron: He claims his body, which has the hide of an elephant surgically grafted to it, will shatter the legs of anyone who tries to kick him. Until Sanji comes along that is.
  • Nice Hat: As worn by a bishop.
  • The Peeping Tom: Spies on Nami in the shower. One of the reasons Sanji is mad at him. (Not because it's bad, but because he's always wanted to do it)
  • Skip to the End: Really impatient at both his wedding attempts.
  • Super Strength: Has the combined muscles of a bear and gorilla and a weight of 300 kilograms thanks to all the animal parts Hogback grafted onto his body.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His Body Horror form. He even removes his cloak beforehand too when evoking it.
  • Wedding Deadline: Averted. As soon as he gets Nami, he knocks her out, dresses her up, and brings her to the altar.


Chief Warden Magellan, now Vice Warden

"Never forget that I have both the power and the authority to execute you all right now!"

Voiced by: Mitsuaki Hoshino (JP)

Magellan is the chief warden of Impel Down, the most feared and impenetrable dungeon in the One Piece world. As such, he is a very imposing man with a very stern, business-like manner. Even when things get out of hand, he keeps up his professional manner, inspiring hope and admiration in much of the prison staff. Forms a bit of an Odd Couple with Vice-Warden Hannyabal, a Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass Starscream, who, despite his eccentricities, Magellan endorses as his successor.

Magellan has the power of poison, granted by the Venom-Venom Fruit (Doku Doku no Mi), and is consequently one of the most dangerous fighters in the story. He can cover himself and others with poisonous corrosive slime, and emit posion gas (which he's able to breathe). The effects of his poison can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, from blinding tear gas to paralyzing neurotoxins. As a side effect, Magellan has taken a liking to actually ingesting poison, and while it can't kill him, it gives him severe bowel troubles, forcing him to spend much of his time relieving himself. After the Impel Down arc, he got beaten to an inch of his life and had to be hospitalized and sedated to prevent him from killing himself. He eventually got over it, but was still demoted to Vice Warden during the Time Skip, much to his dismay.

  • Anti-Villain/Hero Antagonist: Many fans see him and the less-evil members of the Impel Down staff in this light, as they do their jobs to ensure normal, ordinary citizens can rest easy knowing murderers, rapists, and thieves are safely locked away.
  • Arc Villain: He's the primary antagonist of the Impel Down arc, and never appears following that arc, but by no means an actual villain.
  • Badass: Curb-stomping the Determinator main protagonist with minimal damage and absolutely no comeback from said Determinator protagonist? Check. Tearing through hordes of rebelling prisoners without breaking a sweat and leaving no survivors? Check. One-shotting the Blackbeard Pirates simultaneously?. Check. The position of Chief Warden of Impel Down must require "Badass" to be present on the resume.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Spends very little time actually doing his job on account of being occupied in the bathroom suffering intense bouts of diarrhea for several hours a day, but God help you if you have to actually face him. A slight subversion in his case though, as when Shiliew was still Head Gaoler, Shiliew was actually considered more dangerous because he was actually around more often.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He has his silly moments, but during fights, he does not screw around. When he runs across Blackbeard's crew, he doesn't even bother asking why they're there without official permission; he just one-shots them all on sight.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Dresses like an SS officer and uses poison gas... Oy.
  • Driven to Suicide: He's so distraught about allowing so many prisoners to escape Impel Down that he has to be sedated to keep him from killing himself in shame.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Ax Crazy Chief Jailer Shiliew's rampages across Impel Down killing off prisoners had made Magellan less than pleased, particularly as he had no damn reason for doing so, and he was forced to imprison him in Level Six as he was far too dangerous to be ignored.
    • Subverted/justified in that he's not actually evil, just an antagonist.
  • Horn Attack: His "horns" are actually detachable and he can wear them on his hands as weapons.
  • Large and In Charge: He's both tall and broad.
  • Mighty Glacier: Never moves at a pace faster than a brisk walk. He moves faster using Venom Road, but he only does so to reach places he can't get to via walking.
  • Obviously Evil: Subverted, despite his appearance and what not, his goals and motives are only technically evil in the sense that they conflict with Luffy's. If anything, he's more of a Knight Templar, in that anyone who comes to his prison must be a terrible criminal. For the most part, he's correct. However, he does work for the World Government, which means that people they deem as too dangerous, which could be even as simple as political dissidents, could land there.
  • One-Man Army: He could kill every single person in Impel Down if he wanted to.
    • Authority Equals Asskicking: As the prison warden of Impel Down, he enjoys reminding unruly prisoners who is the boss. By melting them.
    • Implacable Man: In the second half of the Impel Down arc, he's basically an Advancing Wall of Doom. No one wants to fight him, anyone who gets caught in his poison is left for dead so more people don't die, and by the last chapter of the arc, only a very small percentage of the original escapees manage to get out alive.
      • Subverted off-screen. Turns out he got beaten to within an inch of his life after Luffy left, in Magellan vs. The Blackbeard Pirates, Round 2.
    • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Luffy tried to do what had always worked until then and thought being The Determinator would let him blow right past Magellan. It didn't end well for him.
    • Person of Mass Destruction: He could potentially destroy all of Impel Down if he decided to.
  • Poisonous Person: His Devil Fruit allows him to produce and control different types of poisons, from toxic gas to paralytic neurotoxin to hyper-corrosive acid.
    • Bad Powers, Bad People: Played with. He's definitely not a good person, and yeah he secretes poison, but he's the warden of the prison where some of the worst criminals in the world are held, and his general demeanor suggests that he would let Team Good Guy live and let live unless they come into direct opposition.
    • Deadly Gas: his power.
    • The Paralyzer: Also his power.
    • Poison Is Corrosive: His ultimate poison Kinjite (literally "Foul Hand"), which he's forbidden from using because it can potentially melt all of Impel Down.
    • Shaping Your Attacks: Hydra and Hell's Judgment.
    • Technicolor Toxin: Usually purple, unless he gets mad. In that case it Turns Red.
    • Walking Wasteland: The "Hell's Judgment" technique.
  • Putting on the Reich: He and most of Impel Down's staff dress very similarly to Nazis, right down to the armband.
    • But you have to admit how undeniably cool he looks.
  • Red Right Hand: Subverted. Despite his demonic appearance and Bulgori-like hands, he only evil in the fact that he's working for the World Government, and is just trying to keep bloodthirsty criminals behind bars.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Faced with a prison riot, an escape attempt involving countless Level 6 prisoners, and the sudden appearance of Blackbeard, he authorizes Shiliew's temporary release to deal with the latter. It does not end well.
    • This easily falls under Godzilla Threshold. Magellan really, really didn't want to resort to that, but considering Impel Down was being attacked by no less than three separate groups at once(two of which containing some serious heavy hitters), he was kind of out of options.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: His appearance, beard, sharp teeth, horns, etc. are very similar to classic depictions of demons.
  • You Shall Not Pass: He's determined to not let anyone out of Impel Down.


Shiliew "of the Rain"

"My future here is no future at all. I've been waiting to meet a man like you."

Voiced by: Takayuki Sugou (JP)

Shiliew was once the Head Gaoler of Impel Down. He was stripped of his rank, was sentenced to execution, and was placed in Level 6 of Impel Down. Magellan, desperate for help, temporarily releases Shiliew to crush the riot. Instead, Shiliew attacks the workers and cuts off communications. Shiliew saved the Blackbeard Pirates from Magellan's poison and promptly joined the team.

  • Ax Crazy: Very much so. One wonders how someone this psychopathic earned the position as Head Gaoler of the most important prison in the world.
  • Badass: Unquestionably. He apparently has no Devil Fruit, and yet was basically an equal to Magellan, though Magellan defeated him. He was one of the most dangerous people in the damned prison.
  • BFS: His sword is a type used to kill cavalry, but he wields it like a normal sword.
    • Of course, he's much, much taller and larger than normal humans, so for him, it probably is a normal sword.
  • Cape Wings: Possibly. He is seen sporting devil wings when confronting Magellan, but they are not present afterward.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Zoro. Note his swordsmanship, being put on death row prior to joining Blackbeard, and calling Blackbeard out after Magellan's crushing attack. The fact that he used to be a jailer nicely parallels Zoro's past as a pirate hunter, too.
  • Face Heel Turn: Used to work for the World Government, but defects and joins Blackbeard.
  • The Fatalist: Seems to be a reason for joining Blackbeard.
  • Gag Nose: As seen in the picture above.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Smokes a large cigar almost all the time.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: Well, once believed in Justice. See Gag Nose for his massive features.
  • Large and In Charge: Not as tall as Magellan, but much bigger than normal people.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He killed prisoners for fun, claiming them to be "just trash". Then, he gets arrested, and sent to Level Six.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: His name translates to "Death Dragon".
  • Putting on the Reich: Like all who work at Impel Down. His uniform seems to look more like the SS, which fits his personality.
  • Psycho for Hire: It's implied that he took the job as Gaoler of Impel Down to torture and kill prisoners.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joined Blackbeard's crew.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Up until Chapter 595 gave us his offical name, many refered to him as "Shiryuu".

"I have a message for the whole world! All you pathetic commoners out there who cling to peace! You too, Marines! And the World Government! And of course, the pirates of the world! The future of this world has just been decided... Zehahahaha! That's right! From now on... THIS IS MY ERA! Zehahaha... ZEHAHAHAHA!!"

An ambitious former member of the Whitebeard Pirates whose fate seems entwined with Luffy's. He ate the Dark-Dark Fruit (Yami Yami no Mi), a Logia which affords him the awesome power of darkness. All-in-all, a somewhat difficult man to read. Like others with the initial "D." in their names, he's kind of a big deal.

Initally he started off as a no-name pirate, whose only relevance in the story was that he killed one of Whitebeard's crew and ran off, with big goals that had his sights set on Luffy to kickstart his plan. However Ace intercepted him and the two clashed. Blackbeard won and turned Ace over the to the Marines, securing a position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. However it was just a means to an end to enter Impel Down during the Marineford war and recruit some high-bounty pirates into his crew. He then headed to Marineford and had his crew help gang up on Whitebeard and kill him. Somehow taking Whitebeard's earthquake power for his own before departing when Shanks arrived. Two years later, its revealed he took over WB's territory (since being in his crew, he knew it well) and is now one the the Four Emperors. His crew are now searching for high level Devil Fruit users to kill so they can take their powers for their own.

  • Almighty Janitor: He was in the service of Whitebeard for over 22 years, and was offered the spot of 2nd Division commander when it was vacant, due to his strength, durability, and maybe knowledge of Haki, but he declined, saying he had no such ambitions, giving his support to Ace. Long story short, he lied.
  • Badass Boast: "THIS IS MY ERA!"
  • Bait the Dog: He seemed nice to Luffy and his crew, but the Marineford Arc gave us a true idea of his personality as someone who is more concerned with power then Nakama.
  • Batman Gambit: Successfully playing off of Whitebeard's familial protectiveness of his 'children'? Using the war to infiltrate Impel Down and double his crew size knowing the whole world's attention would be on Marineford? Certainly qualifies.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Kick-started the Whitebeard War, became an Emperor after killing Whitebeard himself, and currently ties with Sakazuki as the primary antagonist for the series.
  • Beard of Evil: It took three costume changes, but he finally got one.
  • Big Damn Villains: During the Impel Down arc, Luffy is having a tough time getting Hannyabal to stay down. Blackbeard then shows up and knocks him out in one shot.
    • He also pulls a spectacular one just as Whitebeard is going to town on the Marines after Ace's death. He even recruited several new crew members from Impel Down. His crew descends on Whitebeard and kills him.
  • Big Eater: He debuts in a seemingly throwaway scene in which he attempts to match Luffy pound for pound in food. They just happen to have opposite tastes.
  • Blessed with Suck: His Dark-Dark powers have some drawbacks. It's unique among the Logias in that it doesn't make him immune to physical strikes (he in fact speculates that it might even make them hurt more) and projectiles are slightly drawn to him.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's big, cheerful, idealistic, Affably Evil, cares for the well-being of his men, is a Big Eater matching Luffy, and loves a good fight. If anything, what makes his actions unnerving is that he doesn't seem to have an "off" switch for his friendliness, as seen when he cheerfully addresses Ace and tries to recruit him while planning to murder Luffy.
  • Captain Color Beard: Just like his namesake.
  • Casting a Shadow: The Dark-Dark Fruit's power literally lets him generate shadows.
    • Gravity Master: One of the central powers of the Dark-Dark Fruit, and a staple of his attack pattern thus far.
    • Necessary Drawback: His gravity powers can suck in Devil Fruit powers and drag opponents closer to him. They also subtly attract projectiles toward his body, making him reliant on his own toughness.
    • Nigh Invulnerability: Subverted. Despite the Dark-Dark Fruit being a Logia-type, which had thus far featured this trope as a standard feature of its power-sets, its abilities actually make Teach more vulnerable to physical damage than normal. Of course, being an incredibly powerful individual as he is, he's still not easy to put down, despite this handicap.
    • Power Copying: It seems that because of his own unique body structure, he can absorb the powers of at least one other Devil Fruit from corpses, and he was after Whitebeard's Tremor-Tremor Fruit power. Post-Time Skip, he's said to be hunting after others to do the same to them.
    • Power Nullifier: His power allows him to cancel the abilities of other Fruit users while he remains in contact with them.
    • Power of the Void: The Darkness can absorb anything into it, literally erasing it from our world. Of course, he can also expel it.
    • Power Parasite: In the final stages of the Battle of Marineford, Blackbeard steals Whitebeards' Devil Fruit!. Post-timeskip he goes after even more.
      • It's also now established he is stealing more DFs over the Time Skip, to give them to his crew and make them more powerful..
  • The Chessmaster: At this point, he's likely on par with Crocodile's cunning. His plan to become the Pirate King has so far included throwing his former commander to the World Government to detract attention away from himself. Using that feat in order to become a Warlord of the Sea to gain access to Impel Down. Relying on the whole world being too focused on the Marines' war against Whitebeard (over the aforementioned commander) to notice him breaking into Impel Down and recruiting the worst criminals held there into his crew. Finally, showing up in the middle of said war to kill Whitebeard and steal his Devil Fruit power. Damn...
  • Chewing the Scenery: The quote above, among others.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Did this to every superior he encountered in his pirate career. Second Commander Ace and Captain Whitebeard of the Whitebeard Pirates (it's even implied that he did this literally to Thatch in the anime), and the World Government as he renounced his Warlord title, after freeing several Level 6 Impel Down prisoners. Although, it seems one of his new crewmembers may have this.
  • Dark Is Evil: He even went out of his way to claim his darkness powers are the most evil of all Devil Fruits. Considering he can completely nullify other Devil Fruit powers, there might be more to this claim than it being a simple boast...
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He now posseses the Gura Gura no Mi.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: He's always been a Large Ham, but when he gets the powers of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit he goes full-blast into this trope.
  • Evil Counterpart: Another one for Luffy, and also the best fit for the trope. In addition, the rest of his crew also shadow other members of Straw Hats.
    • This becomes even more clear with the addition of Shiliew who, being a master swordsman, is a pretty obvious shadow of Zoro.
    • Another similiar trait is his own talent to get powerful pirates to join him. From all looks of things, Evil Is One Big Happy Family within the Blackbeard crew.
      • Not completely. A line from Shiliew seems to imply that some of the more powerful pirates only joined Teach because he had a shot at taking Whitebeard's Tremor-Tremor powers, and that they intended to ditch him and go their separate ways if it turned out he actually couldn't.
      • In Chapter 575, it seems Avalo Pizarro may not be 100% content serving him.
  • Evil Laugh: "Zehahahah" is pretty much the most common thing to come out of this guy's mouth, almost to the point of a Verbal Tic.
  • Evil Overlord
  • The Fatalist: This is his crew's central motif and belief, standing bizarrely at odds with several of his statements, such as "Nothing is impossible," and "The dreams of men will never die!"
    • Only if you take fatalism for nihilism or defeatism. A common mistake in interpretation of fatalism assumes that the status quo is fate rather than fate being an unknowable destiny. Blackbeard seems to subscribe to the idea that there he has a special destiny, but that the world has fated outcomes. In other words, he thinks he is a main character.
  • Faux Symbolism: Blackbeard's last name was also the same for the Real Life version. Whitebeard's first name was his first name also. Thatch was an alias used by the real Blackbeard sometimes. By killing them both, Blackbeard has truly become... Blackbeard.
  • For Want of a Nail: Pretty much everything that's happened recently (minus Sabaody) is connected to his killing of Thatch and capture of Ace.
  • Freudian Excuse: Looks that way [dead link].
  • Friendly Enemy: For the most part, anyway. He had nothing but encouragement and praise for Ace and later, Luffy, and then later Whitebeard, but he brutally dismissed Hannyabal's belief in the pursuit of justice.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: From a Giant Mook to Warlord of the Sea to Emperor.
  • Genius Bruiser: Doesn't seem like it at first, but he is a rather cunning planner. So much so that he's able to manipulate the World Government, and use them to find new crew mates.
  • Giant Mook: See Almighty Janitor above. Because he kept his head down a lot, he served this role to Whitebeard instead. Until the Dark-Dark Fruit came along, that is.
  • Gonk
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: He does this to Jewelry Bonney after he defeats her crew and captures her. Her response? A kick to the face, after which he expresses that's a very unlady-like thing to do.
  • Just Between You and Me: Inverted. He doesn't tell you phases of his plans until after they played out. This is confirmed when fellow schemer and predecessor Crocodile asks him why he would throw away his Warlord title so soon, only for him to reply it's none of his business. He would later reveal that the only reason he had the title in the first place is to break into Impel Down and take the world's worst criminals as his crewmembers, while his former captain prepares for battle with his former allies.
  • It's All About Me: To him, it doesn't matter how many died in the Paramount War, or how many from the various problems afterwards, like a release of who knows how many evil Pirates from Level Six or the surge in new Pirates, all directly or indirectly from his own actions. As long as he becomes Pirate King, it's all good.
  • Karma Houdini: Thanks to Shanks, Blackbeard is able to leave Marineford laughing all the way.
  • Know When to Fold'Em: Even if you get Whitebeard's powers, if you don't know much about it yet, like he has admitted to, it wouldn't do much against a guy like Shanks. Probably why he wisely withdrew from Marineford.
  • Large and In Charge: Subverted. Although he is 11'3", he's not the biggest member of his crew. Vasco Shot, who seems to be around the range of Kuma/Moria, i.e. 22 feet, towers over Blackbeard. And that's not even getting started on San Juan Wolf, who looks to be as tall as the Sears Tower.
  • Large Ham: When he can get time to tell someone of his thoughts and plans, he explodes with it, like the quote above.
  • Made of Iron: It takes a lot to bring him down, and it's easy to do it, him being so slow. Too bad for him Magellan exploited his weakness by flooding out his pain neuroceptors.
  • Man of Kryptonite: To any Devil Fruit users.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Notice how he often talks to his enemies in a calm and friendly manner? That's to get someone's guard down before he attacks.
    • And how he's been in wait during the whole Paramount War, but only reveals himself once both sides are very much weakened?
    • Forcing the inmates of Level Six to kill each other in order to get a chance to escape as members of his crew can count.
  • Mighty Glacier: Yep.
  • Not So Different: Seems to think he and Luffy are on a similar level with their powerful ambitions and huge dreams. Luffy seems to agree since he's very disturbed by Blackbeard's Black and Gray Morality and the Unfortunate Implications it presents.
  • Not So Harmless: Someone really should have taken a closer look at this guy after he managed to give Shanks a permanent scar in a head-on clash, before eating his Devil Fruit.
  • Obviously Evil
  • Odd Motif Out: He is pretty much the only pirate in the series that explicitly does not have a bounty.
    • He also is the only member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea not to have an animal motif, though he resigned from the position later after getting what he wanted from it.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His darkness powers can engulf half an island by himself, and now he's stolen Whitebeard's power to create earthquakes and tsunamis.
  • Psycho Rangers: His crew serves as this to the Straw Hats.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Though he can usually back it up, he talks smack to Whitebeard after cancelling his DF power. He gets a spear to the shoulder in response.
    • Though this is Whitebeard we're talking about here. Compared to him, anyone talking smack to him is this. Even Akainu.
  • Stout Strength: Is a very big man, but incredibly strong and durable.
  • Ubermensch: He rejects the increasing Pirate beliefs of not believing in the future, seeks to bring a New Age, is a firm believer in personal strength and morals (primarily dreams, in his case), is very charismatic, and incredibly good at shaping the world to his will.
  • Wolverine Claws: Seen sporting at least one in a flashback in Chapter 645.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: He claims to be playing Speed Chess; in his own words, he has a plan, but circumstances keep changing and he's adapting the plan to fit the bumps along the way. For example, he wasn't going to bother following his original plan to bring in Luffy for a bounty after Ace caught up with him. Once the plan is fully laid out, it looks a lot more like a Roulette with all of the things that went his way. Though a lot of that was probably just luck, and his fortunes may change in the future.
    • Not a joke: The reason he became a Warlord of the Sea? To kill Whitebeard and steal his power.
      • No, he became a Warlord solely to gain the opportunity to break into Impel Down. He probably didn't add in the idea of killing Whitebeard until after he changed his plan from capturing Luffy to capturing Ace.
    • Considering that he needed the Warlord position to break into Impel Down and release the Level 6 prisoners eventually, he was probably planning to confront Whitebeard at some point, anyway. Realizing that Ace was hounding him made things go even faster and everything falling into place easier.


"Gold Lion" Shiki

"I will rule over all the seas from the sky!"

"The Flying Pirate" Gold Lion Shiki is a legendary pirate known for clashing with Gold Roger himself and for being the very first pirate to ever escape from Impel Down. His base of operations is a collection of floating islands, which he himself made with his Float-Float Fruit (Fuwa Fuwa no Mi), swarming with fierce animals called Merveille, from which he and his five-thousand strong crew plot their revenge on the world.

  • Animal Motifs: The lion, of course. Not only does he have long, mane-like hair, Merveille is littered with Mix-and-Match Critters (as the lion is the king of beasts). But to really drive the point home, he uses his powers to create roaring lions out of the surrounding enviroment.
  • Artificial Limbs: He uses swords as prosthetic legs. Really.
  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: Pulls this in Chapter 0.
  • Blond Guys Are Evil: Golden-blonde.
  • Chunky Updraft: A pretty basic application of his powers.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Thinking Luffy will kill himself in the lighting storm and finding it has no effect on Luffy (y'know being made of rubber all). It justs super-charged Luffy's attack who brings it right down on Shiki.
  • Evil Plan: Known for making these. His latest one spanned two decades in its formation.
  • Evil Laugh: Jihahahaha.
  • Fantastic Racism: Has an irrational hatred of East Blue, as it's where Roger died, and Shiki found it a disgrace that such a great pirate would meet his end in the weakest of the seas. Which ultimately is the reason he antagonizes the Straw Hats when they mention most of their members are from there.
  • God-Created Canon Foreigner: Originally he was going to be mentioned during Shanks's meeting with Whitebeard, but Oda held off on it because he was wary of the Loads and Loads of Characters aspect. Later, he was mentioned in the manga, after Shiki had already been announced as the tenth movie's antagonist, by Sengoku in reference to his escape of Impel Down.
    • Oda has officially declared that he as well as the movie he is in is canon to both the anime and manga.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: He's seen chomping on an over-sized cigar fairly often, even while fighting.
  • Irony: Shiki's plans for world domination are stopped by a man from East Blue. Twice.
  • Large Ham
  • Laughably Evil: When he's not shooting his own men out of anger, oppressing villagers, Sadistic Choicing people, or shoving their faces into poisonous substances, he comes off as quite eccentric, performing dance routines to '70s espionage music, nicknaming people, and joking that Dumb Muscle Scarlet reminds him of his mother.
  • Life or Limb Decision: He cut off his legs in order to escape from Impel Down.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: The way his powers work is that once he levitates something, it stays in the air until either he decides to let it down himself, or he somehow loses control. Once Luffy defeats him, the Floating Continent ceases to float.
  • Manipulative Bastard: After seeing Nami's navigation skills, he'd already decided he wants her as his navigator, so he acted friendly around the Straw Hats before kidnapping her, and separating the crew across his island, and on the occassion that Nami escaped from his fortress and found the crew, he has visual Den Den Mushis around, so he could just go back for her and kick the asses of the Straw Hats, and threaten to finish them off as well as her home-town, to bring her to his side. It's too bad Nami's a better schemer... and that she'd already been through similar crap with Arlong.
  • Mind Over Matter: Basically what his DF ability boils down to.
  • Oh Crap: His reaction when the lighting he thought would kill Luffy only enhances his Gear 3 Gigant Leg and Luffy bringing it down his way.
  • Playing with Syringes: The source of his monstrous animals is a special chemical called SIQ, which speeds up the evoltionary process.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He fancied himself Roger's rival, and couldn't possibly believe that the Marines had captured him. Since then, he's become highly jaded with the Great Pirate Era, believing that all of the pirates that came since Roger are mere treasure mongers.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Seeing on how he can throw islands at you...
  • Power Floats: Literally. His Devil Fruit allows him to fly and levitate other objects, up to and including battleships islands.
  • Razor Wind: Thanks to his sword-legs, he's capable of launching a flurry of air slashes while airborne.
  • Red Right Hand: The steering wheel lodged into his head and the two swords he uses for prosthetic legs.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Usually gargantuan lion heads.
  • Slasher Smile: Variations. He sports a beaming grin as he drops Marine battleships out of the sky, has a smarmy smirk as he coerces Nami into committing a Face Heel Turn, and finally goes on to a full-blown Slasher Smile while fighting Luffy.
  • Villain Protagonist: Was this in Chapter/Episode 0.
  • Visual Pun: Overlaps with Stealth Pun - he has the helm of a ship stuck in his head.
  • We Can Rule Together: To Roger. Apparently he thought that Roger knew the location of a weapon of mass desruction, and wanted Roger to join with his massive armada so they could Take Over the World. Roger, of course, declined, then curb-stomped his so-called "armada".


"Three-Tongued" Demalo Black

"Hey big guy! Don't you know who you're talking to!?!"

A phony that thought he and his crew could pass himself off as the Straw Hats after the time skip. He attempts to use it to gain more people to support him. He and his whole crew were curb-stomped by the Marines when they show up when they hear that Straw Hat has come back... which he really should have seen coming. The only major contribution to the story is introducing the villain, Caribou,

  • Beard of Evil: Luffy isn't even old enough, buddy.
  • Big Bad Wannabe : Sentomaru kicks his ass with one strike, and from the broad end of his axe, to boot.

  • Fat Bastard: A good reason that tells you, he ain't Luffy.
  • Gonk: Another reason.

  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Look at the image and tell me THAT'S Luffy!
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He thinks that he can pass himself as Luffy, but he's obviously out of his league.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks he can get into the New World by pretending to be Luffy, but it is proven to be an impostor by the now more powerful Luffy.
  • Too Dumb to Live: His scheme involves impersonating some of the most wanted and most dangerous pirates in the world, without having anything to back it up, and using that to goad other pirates that are way more powerful than him (and a personality to match) into doing his dirty work. Does this sound like a good idea to you?

"Wet-Haired" Caribou and "Blood-Splatterer" Coribou

"Hey hey heeeyyyy! Weren't you on the phone with the good ol' Marines just nooowwww?!? We wouldn't like that, you knooowww?!? If you called themmmmm, gehehehehehe! This plaza will be smeared in blood, you knowww! With your blood, that issss! Right, Coribou?"

"Yuuupp! Sorry bro-bro, sorrryyy!"

An infamous rookie pirate captain with a bounty of 210,000,000 and a Logia-class Devil Fruit, "Wet-Haired" Caribou and his brother, "Blood Splatterer" Coribou (his bounty is 190,000,000) are infamous for mudering Marines and burying them alive. Coribou's a nervous, stuttering, and oblivious wreck, while Caribou's a psychotic, homicidal serial killer that buries his victims alive for irritating him, all while praying to God to forgive the victims' sins. Caribou ate the Swamp-Swamp Fruit (Numa Numa no Mi), a Logia class Devil Fruit which allows him to transform into, create, and control a mud-like substance which he refers to as "swamps".

  • Ax Crazy: Good lord, Caribou!
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Vander Decken and Hordy Jones during the Fishman Island arc. While the first two are working together, Caribou's roaming around Fishman Island on his own, kidnapping various mermaids and planning to sell them off in an auction, which indrectly caused the inhabitants of the island to blame the Straw Hats for it. The mess is cleared up by the end, thankfully.
    • Big Bad Wannabe: Is also nowhere near as threatening as either, and his every interaction with the Straw Hats sees him being humiliated.
  • Blob Monster: Caribou's Logia-class swamp Devil Fruit allows him to turn into one.
  • Body Horror: This page and this one. The first one if most Nightmare Fuel worthy, but even in the second...bodies should not be like that!
  • Buried Alive: One of his favorite ways to kill someone. This also happens to be the final fate of the Imposter Straw Hats, excluding Demalo Black (incapacitated and incarcerated by Sentoumaru), Cocoa, and Fake Chopper (both were taken away by men in black suits).
  • Butt Monkey: Once Caribou met the Straw Hats, his life pretty much turned into this. Even in a proper fight, he went down in one punch.
  • Chest Blaster: Caribou keeps a gatling gun hidden inside his body, which pops out of his stomach when he needs to fire it.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Caribou thrice over near the end of the Fishman Island arc. He gets knocked out of the palace while trying to kidnap Shirahoshi. Knocked out with one punch when the Monster Trio pursued him and then again by Pekoms while trying to take back the treasure he stole.
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: When Caribou's crew tried to attack the Straw Hats, their ride is pulled off by a terrified seacow -- Momoo. Caribou, knowing he has no chance of taking on the entire Straw Hat crew, pretends to be a coward and a weakling on par with Spandam, begs for forgiveness, and hides his Logia powers. If Franky didn't catch him monologuing, he might have picked off the Straw Hats before the Monster Trio could come back.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Caribou's Devil Fruit allows him to control and transform into mud.
  • Dumb Muscle: Coribou seems to fill the bill—no real tactics, no clever strategy. He just follows his Bro-bro's instructions.
  • Evil Laugh: Kehehehe for Caribou.
  • Fat Bastard: Coribou's much more overweight than his brother.
  • Gatling Good: Unlike his brother, Coribou relies on a massive hand-cranked Gatling Gun to fight. Caribou uses this, too, keeping one in his chest as a surprise attack.
  • Gonk: Both of them are hideously ugly, not to mention freaky-looking, but especially Caribou to frightening levels.
  • Hammerspace: As a secondary effect of his powers, Caribou can absorb anything into his body.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Per the above. He has a spear, a pistol, a scythe, and a gatling gun stuffed inside him.
  • Head Pet: Coribou seems to have an Iguana on his head for hair.
  • Jerkass: Comedic humiliations aside, Caribou is a rather unpleasant individual.
  • Nightmare Face: Caribou. Looks even more unsettling in the anime.
  • Oh Crap: When Momoo ran away and took the rest of the crew with him in fear, Caribou had such an epic one that was on par with Eneru.
    • He had another one later when Luffy caught him red-handed trying to kidnap Shirahoshi.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Caribou is a Logia, but he may actually be an aversion, as since he's a liquid-based one, he seems to have a set amount he can generate, and he can be confined in a closed space (A barrel, if you want to know), but he can absorb materials into him like Blackbeard can. Guess he's more of a lesser example, in that sense.
  • Psycho for Hire: For the Imposter Straw Hats, before he defected.
  • Red Shirt: Coribou ended up as one. While attempting to rescue his brother from the Straw Hats, the giant Kraken grabbed their ship and crushed it in one snap, popping their protective bubble coating and leaving the crew to float in the sea, possibly drowning or being crushed by the pressure.
    • Nope. Chapter 650 reveals that he's still alive.
  • Scary Black Man: You wouldn't know it from the manga, but in the anime Caribou is actually black (Although his brother is pale white, for some reason) and he is hella scary with his deformed face and bright Green Eyes and whatnot.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: It's not very wise to open an unknown barrel with SUPER security seals. Poor mermaids.
  • Serial Killer: Both Caribou and Coribou earned a reputation for killing Marines and burying them alive.
  • Shovel Strike: Coribou seems to carry one around, but actually uses it to dig more than fight.
  • Sinister Scythe: Caribou has one hidden away inside his swamp form.
  • Slasher Smile: Caribou's default expression.
  • Soulsaving Crusader: When Caribou's about to kill someone, he asks an unspecified god to forgive them of their sins. It's one of the reasons he's one of the most disturbing villains in the series.
  • Smug Snake: Constantly has to reevaluate his plans, not because of Xanatos Speed Chess, but because when he encountered the actual Straw Hats he discovered he was completely out of his depth.
  • The Starscream: Caribou & Coribou only joined the Imposter Straw Hats so they could kill them on the inside for fame.
  • Swamps Are Evil: Caribou is a Logia class Devil Fruit which allows him to transform into, create, and control a mud-like substance. This fruit also grants a Hammerspace like power that allows Caribou to swallow up and store things within his body; presumably, this ability comes from quick sand being a huge threat in swamps as well as countless stories of people wandering into them and disappearing.

"Princess Shirahoshi! No matter how long I search this wide ocean floor, I will never find such a grand and beautiful woman such as you! If the love you possess allow us to be married, then good! But you must not live on with your life with someone else! If then that time comes, then you will die Shirahoshi! You must pledge your love to me or die! Your fate is death or marriage!"

The legendary captain of the Flying Dutchman, a mysterious ship that travels undersea. Is eventually revealed to be the descendant of the real deal, and a Bullhead shark fishman. He's wanted in the Ryuugu kingdom because of his one-sided love for the Mermaid Princess Shirahoshi. He eventually teams up with Hordy Jones and the New Fishmen Pirates in order to take over Fishman Island and marry Shirahoshi. However, after being rejected by the princess, he's now trying to kill her. He also ate the Mark-Mark Fruit (Mato Mato no Mi), a devil fruit that allows him to always hit his targets from anywhere.

  • Affably Evil: Always very polite and formal towards everyone, even when he's about to murder them.
  • Anticlimax Boss: Doesn't meet his end in an awesome confrontation with Luffy, but from Hody's trident in his gut. Then he's caught and tied up.
  • Arc Villain: Together with Jones, for the Fishman Island arc.
  • Ax Crazy: This guy's idea of giving presents to the object of his love is to throw weapons at her, try to kill said person (and her friend) when they reject him, and if that doesn't work, throw a massive ship half the size of Fishman Island to make sure he wouldn't miss (Not that he ever does, but try blocking a ship that large coming your way).
  • Badass Mustache: Decken's got a wavy, crazy-looking one.
  • Bad Boss: He's willing to let his underling Wadatsumi die when he fell from Noah on Gyoncorde Plaza.
  • BFS: The "gifts" he sent to Shirahoshi are literally bigger then he is.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: How is a guy so incredibly eccentric dangerous at all? How about when he decided upon seeing Shirahoshi's ability to call Seakings, that he needed a treasure that instantly ages anyone who opens it so he could use it on her to age her into a woman so he can marry her? And then while doing that, decided that throwing weapons at her with his ability was a romantic proposition? And then when he gets told 'no' personally, finds a ship that's BIGGER THAN FISHMAN ISLAND and then THROWS IT AT HER (albeit he used his ability to do so)?
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Hordy Jones for the Fishman Island arc, but...
    • Big Bad Wannabe: He's somewhat of an anticlimactic antagonist, since he was easily pummuled by a tied-up Luffy.
  • Cat Smile: Justified, since bullhead sharks are also known as 'cat sharks' in Japan.
  • Colony Drop: He decided to throw the ancient ship of Noah, which is half the size of Fishman Island, at Princess Shirahoshi, after his rejection by her and defeat by Monkey D. Luffy. Doing so would easily destroy all of Fisman Island.
  • Dual-Wielding: When confronting Luffy and Shirahoshi, Decken uses two axes.
  • Everything's Even Worse with Sharks: Vander Decken himself is a Japanese bullhead shark fishman, who oddly has four legs. They are known as cat sharks in Japan, so he can double this up with Cats Are Mean, as well.
  • Evil Cripple: Decken seems to have quite a hunchback.
  • Evil Laugh: Bahohoho.
  • Gonk
  • Gratuitous English: In the anime, "Dead or marriage !"
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After being impaled by Hody, he touches him and throws an axe at him, and then tries to kick him with concealed daggers in his shoes. Hody uses this to flip Decken into the path of his own oncoming homing projectile.
  • If I Can't Have You: Decken toward Shirahoshi. When she rejects him, he decides to kill her.
  • Important Haircut: After being 'rejected' by Shirahoshi, he shaves his head bald... but only the part that's hidden under his hat, so his outward appearance doesn't change.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By Hody, via his trident, for trying to screw with him.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills/Homing Projectile: Decken's Devil Fruit power, he can hit his target from anywhere with any possible weapon.
    • An Axe to Grind: Decken uses giant Battle Axes bigger then he is to send his messages to Shirahoshi & uses two hatchets as main weapons when confronting Shirahoshi and Luffy.
    • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Huge swords are also part of Decken's usual "love letters".
    • Grievous Harm with a Body: He even threw Jones' human pirate slaves at the tower, so that they could open the gates from the inside.
    • Annoying Arrows: Averted Trope. Just look at Hachi to see how they felt.
    • Colony Drop: His latest projectile is a massive ship that's half the size of the entire Fishman Island.
  • I Work Alone: Or rather not as an underling to someone. An equal partnership is fine, though.
  • Jail Bait Wait: He first took a fancy to Shirahoshi when she was six. Granted, it was because of her powers more than anything else, but he certainly didn't seem to mind the thought of her remaining that age mentally so long as her body was matured.
  • Jerkass: As if stalking and throwing weapons at the Mermaid Princess for 10 years plus wasn't enough, now he's tossed a whole pirate crew at Shirahoshi's tower.
    • More recently, he tested his powers on poor Hachi and almost killed him with a hail of arrows. Hell, he even resorted to killng Shirahoshi (and Luffy) immediately after she rejects him, albeit in a polite manner.
  • Kick the Dog: What he did to Hatchan is downright awful.
  • Laughably Evil: He's a complete and utter Jerkass, but he's just so darn odd; it's kind of hard to hate him as much as Jones.
  • Legacy Character: The Vander Decken in the myths is actually the Grandfather of the current Captain.
  • Lolicon: Decken took an interest in Shirahoshi about 10 years ago. 12 or so years ago, Arlong tried to recruit him, meaning he had to be bare-minimum late teens-early 20's. Chapter 621 showed 6 years prior to his stalking she was born. So, Decken is estimated to have started to stalk Shirahoshi when she was about 6 or 7.
    • Subverted big time. Yes, he started stalking Shirahoshi at age 6, BUT only because he witnessed her ability of summoning Giant Sea Monsters to do her bidding, a skill that his late Grandpa was searching for as well.
    • In chapter 626, he jumped at the rumor that there was a way to age her up, and he'd previously noted that her age was a problem.
  • Made of Iron: The guy got thrown head first in to the ground by Luffy with a Jet Hammer attack. Later Hody Jones stabbed him with his trident AND he got used as a shield by his own thrown axe. How did he lose his conciousness? By hitting his head on a stepping stone.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Decken, oddly enough, seems to have two extra legs. This is likely due to how the bullhead shark has three pairs of "belly fins" (two big near the head and four smaller) unlike the usual two pairs of the other kinds of shark.
  • Nice Hat: Decken has a Fedora that looks a bit like a straw hat in silhouette...
  • Not Quite Dead: Decken is still alive after the ordeal with Hody, and basically is this... and then he gets knocked out by hitting his head on a step.
  • Shout-Out: Decken has a hat rather similar to Michael Jackson in his "Smooth Criminal" persona & has one glove on, albeit not covered in Rhinestones.
    • In the latest chapter, he has adopted a Tao Pai Pai-esque style of movement by tossing a coral pillar at Shirahoshi and jumping on it.
  • Sore Loser: The woman he's stalking politely tells him that he's not her type. Cue to tossing first axes then a whole giant ship on her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Towards poor Shirahoshi; he sent love letters written on broad-axes and swords. And later in the series a freaking ship at her.
  • Verbal Tic: Decken often interjects "I think" into his sentences & has a unique laugh of "Bahohohoho!".
  • Villain Team-Up: He refused one with Arlong, citing that he doesn't work under anyone. Conversely, he allied himself with Hordy Jones, stating that he prefers being able to work alongside someone and be treated as an equal. Of course, he threw that out the window the moment Shirahoshi rejected him by throwing the Noah ship at the princess and subsequently Fishman Island, knowing that it would kill his allies in the process but not caring in the slightest.
    • Unwitting Pawn: Hody Jones only recruited him to not just help with the invasion of Ryuugu Palace, but to kill Shirahoshi. Jones recoginzed the dangers the princess' control of Sea Kings would bring, and knew that Decken's If I Can't Have You mentality would bring him to kill her.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: Decken is so far the only fishman who has eaten a Devil Fruit and therefore cannot swim like the rest of his kind. This is almost the exact opposite of the legend of the real captain of the Flying Dutchman, who could not set foot on land.
  • Yandere: Male example, which may make it a little freakier.[context?]


Hody Jones

"We are going to steal back Fishman Island, the center of the world, from that cowardly Sea God Neptune! And we are going to pull down all you humans into the abyss of the sea! We are going to teach you all that the Fishmen are the true supreme race!"

A great white shark Fishman, the captain of the New Fishman Pirates and a former soldier of the Neptune army, Hody Jones is an admirer of Arlong and strongly believes in his ideals. He led the assault on the Ryugu Palace in order to take over the kingdom while his underlings create chaos elsewhere on the Island.

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Not a fan of humans? Check. Considers his race to be the supreme one? Check. Thinks he's saving his country by starting an oppression rule? Check.
    • And then the real kicker : He has no reason for doing any of his actions outside of blind racism. He just does it cause he wants to.
  • Anticlimax Boss: Despite his status and mighty strength, he was taken down by Zoro with a single sword slash while underwater, and needed to be force-fed E.S. in order to be awakened, much less stand a chance. Then they had to keep feeding him more, because the wound was that bad.
    • Clipped-Wing Angel: Even in his ultrabadass new form, Luffy mopped the floor with him. He got in one solid bite, and that only brought Luffy down because Luffy strained himself trying to beat Noah into splinters. Furthermore, he's defeated even before his subordinates, making it a unique case so far in the manga.
      • Turns out it's even more Clipped then one thought before. Turns out transforming accelerated his aging process so quickly, the same day he turned into a hulking beast, he ended up as a frail, old man.
  • Arc Villain: Alongside Decken, for the Fishman Island arc.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Toward Arlong.
  • Axe Crazy
  • Badass: Can at least get up from hits from a two year newly trained Luffy who even commented how tough he was.
  • Bad Boss: Jones is the exact opposite of Arlong in this respect. Whereas Arlong was upset by Luffy using one of his men as a shield, Jones is perfectly fine with doing the same to his men.
    • Outright confirmed in Chapter 627. By Hachi no less.
    • To the point that he tries to kill Vander Decken himself when he finds out his plans.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Vander Decken in the Fishman Island arc. However...
    • Big Bad Wannabe: Jones plans to overthrow Neptune, take over Fishman Island, and subjugate all of humanity in due time. But, as the Arc continues, it's clear that without E.S., he has no chance of even thinking of taking on the world.
  • The Caligula: As he tries to become the new king of Fishman Island, one of his projects is to execute, one by one, all those who had signed Queen Otohime's petition for migration. Seeing on how effective her rallies were, he's potentially willing to kill thousands (if not more) of his own subjects.
    • Then there's his "vision" for representing Fishman Island before Reverie: by brutally killing all the members present. And that's likely before he executes all those who signed Otohime's petition.
  • Call Back: After taking the E.S., Jones's eyes become "lizard-like" just like Arlong's did.
    • During the underwater battle in Chapter 641, he uses the same teeth trick used by Arlong (leaving his teeth on Luffy and growing new ones in seconds) and later gets his Kirisame blade broken by Luffy.
  • Deadly Upgrade: When he takes E.S., and in Chapter 630 he underwent a massive, nightmarish one.
  • Determinator: Jones knows his drug abuse is rapidly shaving his life off, but he will bring the Fishmen to the top of the world, even if it kills him.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Set: Jones broadcast on TV an announcement that from now on, he's taking control of Fishman Island, that there'll be a public execution for the King, as well the drifting Straw Hats. Oh, and and that he'll execute every one of the citizens who signed the late Queen Otohime's petition to be recognized by the surface.
  • Evil Albino: One of the side effects of his overdose turned him into one.
  • Evil Sounds Deep
  • Face Heel Turn: Jones used to be a highly-esteemed soldier in the Neptune Army/Ammo Knights.
    • Evil All Along: But the only reason he joined was to learn their battle tactics...
  • Fantastic Drug: Jones uses Energy Steroids to boost his strength.
  • Fantastic Racism: His hatred of humans is even more passionate than Arlong's, although the New Fishmen Pirates do employ a few. They tried to bring Luffy in, and they had at least a few unwilling human members (though it's pretty doubtful Hody would've "hired" the Strawhats anyway, considering Luffy was the one to beat his idol). Their Jolly Roger even has a decapitated human on it. Later, his hatred is shown in greater detail when one of his crew members states that he kills any fishman with human-transfered blood in them since they're now "dirtied."
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: What seemingly was a Freudian Excuse was actually not anything of the sort; he simply does all this because he really hates humans.
  • Fur and Loathing: Jones has what looks to be a dead dog wrapped around his neck.
  • Gonk: Not normally, but after his One-Winged Angel, he slowly starts growing more and more grotesque as the arc goes on. In particular, during his fight with Luffy he eats steroids in between his beatdown to keep himself conscious, and his muscles grow larger and larger until he's a bulging freak that's twice the size of co-villain Vander Decken, whom he was formerly shorter than. And then, his face and jaw become enlarged and swollen until he's truly frightening in appearance.
  • Hannibal Lecture/"The Reason You Suck" Speech: Usually to Hachi, Neptune, and Shirahoshi.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Eventually, Hody takes too many Energy Steroids, trying to use them as stimulants to keep himself awake despite the nasty wound he has. It ends up causing all of his fat cells and muscle tissue to burn from the inside.
    • And then it turns out to be a subversion. All of that wear and tear on the inside of his body has made him stronger. Of course, if these steroids work anything like real ones....
    • And now it's revealed to be a subversion of a subversion. As it turns out, the Energy Steroids are made from the National Treasure of Fishman Island. The treasure that can turn someone older. Now Hody and his crew are all old men for abusing the steroids.
  • Hypocrite: Despite his utter disgust at the World Nobles, his actions (such as forcing people to be his slaves and believing his power allows him to do what ever he wants, and how he views himself born superior) ironically make him the same as them.
    • Jinbei lampshades it by referring to Hody's actions as "playing Celestial Dragon."
  • I Knew It!: Many fan had assumed he was the one who killed Otohime. So it came as no surprise when he eventually admitted it.
    • An in-universe example is that Shirahoshi was aware of the true identity of her mother's killer.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Kirisame, a massive curved blade that he can attach to his dorsal fin.
  • Jerkass Knight Templar: While he's just as much of a Fantastic Racist as Arlong, Jones does seem to genuinely believe in the Fishman cause, contrasting Arlong's passing rhetoric of money first and race second. He's still a massive asshole with no regard for humanity and little for his own kind, though. He barely even cares about his crew.
    • This is later averted however as his cause has no reason to it. While Arlon was already a bigot against humans, the death of Fisher Tiger drove him to his actions, and was also why he was against hurting his own kind. Hody however was simply told to hate humans and he just grew up on this philosophy without none of the experience. Hence why hes so willing to kill his own men and throw himself into reckless actions with disregard for his own life.
  • Kick the Dog: Remember how peeved Arlong got when Luffy used one of his crew members as a shield? Hody has no such particular reservations.
  • Locked Into Strangeness: His hair has become white after overdosing on Energy Steroids.
    • Due to the fact that the drugs were physically aging him. See "Power At A Price" below
  • Made of Iron: After his One-Winged Angel, he was able to recover from several hard haki-infused attacks from Luffy.
    • Most notable at the end, when he gets punched so hard in nearly disembowels him but not only survives but doesn't seem to suffer any after-effectsof the blow.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He misdirected the entire Fishman Island into believing that a human caused Otohime's death. In reality, he killed her.
  • Making a Splash: Being a fishman, this is obvious. One of his attacks involves a volley of arrow-like waterdrops.
    • Jinbe stated that he knows Fishman Karate, but he's not nearly as good as him.
    • Shaping Your Attacks: Can shot shark-shaped bullets with his Murasame attack.
  • Meaningful Name: Jones is also slang for heroin, or drug addiction. Suits a guy who uses steroid pills, isn't it?
    • Also, "Hody" in Japanese sounds like "Hoji". The Japanese for Great White Shark is Hojirozame (頬白鮫).
    • Furthermore, most of his attacks are a Hurricane of Puns involving sharks.
  • Nice Hat: He's got a newsboy cap.
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth: Jones, hopped up on Energy Steroids, can destroy an entire ship with his teeth.
  • Oh Crap: When he saw Luffy take down half his army with a burst of haki.
  • One-Winged Angel: The Energy Steroid overdose that nearly killed him... actually made him really powerful.
  • Painful Transformation: What he went through to take on his One-Winged Angel form.
  • Power At a Price: The Energy Steroid indeed increase one's strength and power but literally does take away the user's lifeforce by accelerating their age. This is why Hody's hair turned white as by that point the drugs had heighten him to the peak of his health. By the time Luffy beats him, they've aged Hody into his twilight years, too old and frail to be of any threat anymore. And the kicker, the dope never even realized it.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: His weapon seems to be a large black trident from his days in the Neptune Army. He uses it again later in the story. On Vander Decken.
  • Punny Name: Jones got attacks that he named "Soshark" (pun on Soshaku, meaning eating roughly) and "Yabuzame" (a kind of horse archery).
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In the anime, his eyes turn blood red when he takes ES.
  • Shark Man
  • Shoot the Messenger: When Shirley informs him of her visions of Luffy destroying the island, meaning his takeover will be entirely pointless. He, of course, gets pissed and hits her with a water shot.
  • Shout-Out: Jones's hair resembles Michael Jackson's hair in the late 80's.
  • Shown Their Work: When Jones bites something or opens his mouth, his teeth look exactly like the ones of a real White Shark (complete with the exposed gum, for example).
  • Slasher Smile: Being a shark, it's inevitable.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He might have been a good opponent pre-Time Skip, but he's just out of his league against the Straw Hats and is completly unaware of it. He also seems to have no comprehension of just how powerful the people he would be fighting on the surface are.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Jones has some jutting out of his left wrist.
  • Starter Villain: For the Second Half of the series, in a similar manner to Captain Morgan at the beginning of the First Half. For all those muscles, beat-downs against regular humans, One-Winged Angel transformations, and supposed badassery, Hody proves to be absolutely no match for a new and improved Luffy at all. In the end, the stats for their fight are as follows: For Luffy, a kick to the gut that sends Hody flying several yards away into a wall, a kick to the face that draws the first blood of the fight, another kick to the face that drives him into the ground, a haki enhanced punch to the gut (which again sends him flying into a wall), a clawed hand to the shoulder that tears into him, another punch to the face that sends him flying into a wall, yet another punch (Haki imbued this time) that sends him flying immediately after that one, a "Gum Gum Red Hawk" that bursts a hole through his back and sends him flying-yet again- several hundred feet away into a wall, and finally, a Giant, Haki imbued fist that knocks him several degrees into unconsciousness. Into a wall. For Hody: Several missed "water shots", a failed spin kick that led to the aforementioned kicking of him into the ground, one punch landed to the head that didn't affect Luffy at all due to his Rubber Body, and one lucky bite on the shoulder he got in just as Luffy punched him into a wall for the umpteenth time. Wow. You've got to admit though, he is pretty durable for standing up to all that before finally collapsing into a bruised, broken, bloody mess. And he's pretty professional at getting sent flying into walls.
  • Stout Strength: Not so much now after Chapter 631, where the E.S. gives him a Heroic Build.
  • Stupid Evil: Hody is is, well, kind of a moron. He only hates humans because of the negative environment he grew up in. So all his actions are just generally out of ignorance from what he was taught.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Picture if Arlong was a lot tougher, had Blackbeard's physique, and did a lot of drugs. That's Jones, literally Arlong On Steroids. Even his laugh is similar to Arlong's. Justified since Jones is a fan of Arlong.
    • Subverted somewhat by the fact that he's not as dangerous as Arlong.
    • Oh he's dangerous, the difference is he's willing to go into territory Arlong wouldn't cross over into. He's probably more dangerous in that he's much more bloodthirsty and insane.
    • However, Arlong was a much harder opponent for Luffy to overcome at the time, while Hody was defeated easily, making him less of a personal threat to the Strawhats.
  • Tattooed Crook
  • Take Over the World: He has much grander plans than his idol Arlong ever did. After he kills everyone in Reverie, and those who signed Otohime's petition, he plans to enslave all of humanity. And then become Pirate King. Luffy was not amused at the last one.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Overdosing on Energy Steroids has made him significantly stronger. However he's still too weak to fight Luffy on dry land, but he manages to get an advantage by fighting underwater, where he can move better.
  • Verbal Tic: "Jahahahaha".
  • Villainous Breakdown: His smug composure goes very quickly after seeing how strong Luffy is.
  • Visionary Villain: If a somewhat warped one.
  • With My Hands Tied: Jones destroys an entire crew using just his teeth to show off and tell them they have no chance.
  • Younger Than They Look: Hody's eventual fate for overdosing on Energy steroids is basically turning into a really old guy - Like, only skin and bones and incredibly frail type.


Caesar Clown

A former colleague of Doctor Vegapunk. An expert on mass-murder weapons. He is wanted by the government for as of yet unexplained reasons, and has hid himself on Punk Hazard. He has eaten the Gas-Gas Fruit (Gasu Gasu no Mi) allowing him to transform into gas.

  • Bad Boss: See Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Berserk Button: Saying his experiments failed, and Vegapunk in general.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Seems to be in one with Trafalgar Law, it's not quite clear yet.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Seems to be this towards his underlings. He saved them from the brink of death using his technology (Law also helped, with his ability), but he's not above performing experiments on them.
  • Evil Counterpart: Implied to be one for Vegapunk, holds a grudge against him.
  • Evil Gloating: Practically every word coming out of his mouth. He's just that kinda guy.
  • Evil Laugh: Shurororororo!
  • Fantastic Drug: He feeds the children he keeps captive in Punk Hazard an addicting stimulant to ensure that they would never want to leave the island. Children.
  • Gas Leak Coverup: His Gas logia fruit allows him to use this as a convienient method to keep Marines and Pirates away from the entire island his labatory is on. It helps that he basically nuked the island 'accidently' so to ensure that nobody would bother to look for him there, because who'd live on a lifless, poisoned island?
  • Hannibal Lecture: He comes up with these so often it's practically his way of speaking.
  • Horned Humanoid: Apparently has/wears horns on his head.
  • I Meant to Do That: Failure is a word he's not familiar with, claiming what he does is according to plan.
  • Jerkass: He's a Mad Scientist who especially loves weapons of mass murder, he caused the incident that made Punk Hazard into a wasteland, he kidnapped and performed experiments on children, he drugged those same children to prevent them from wanting to escape, he acts like a nice guy to his underlings only to perfom more experiments on them later... What a nice guy.
  • Lack of Empathy: The only thing he seems to feel something for is his personal weapon of mass destruction Slime, who he treats like a sort of pet.
  • Mad Scientist: To be precise he's a Mad Scientist whose primary field of expertise is WMDs. Nice combination, isn't it?
  • The Man Behind the Man: Seems like to work for someone named/codenamed Joker, a mole or a corrupt marine officer in G5, who covered up the kidnappings.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Some fans even think he looks kind of like a Naruto character.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Caesar Clown's face bears a slight resemblance to Cesar Romero's portrayal of the Joker.
  • Oh Crap: Not as glaring as Eneru, but he does seems shocked when Luffy grabs him in chapter 670.
  • The Sociopath: Everyone is just a means to an end to Clown.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Is it Caesar Clown or Caesar Crown?
  • Super Smoke: He has yet to make an appearance in a completely solid solid form, preferring so far to be at least partly gaseous thanks to his Logia-type Devil Fruit.
  • Weapon of Mass Destruction: This is his field of research expertise, next to Gas-based projects. His rivalry with Vegapunk bascially lead him to engineer an 'accident' where one of these basically blew up 2/3s of the research facility so Vegapunk would publically take the fall. It sort of turned out badly for Caeser too, because the incident made him a wanted man, due to Gas-based weapons being A: illegal and B: Caesar's speciality, not Vegapunk's, so the marines saw through it
    • In Chapter 668 is revealed that said Weapon of Mass Destruction is a gargantuan, poisonous Blob Monster called Slime.
  • Would Perform Experiments On A Child
  • You Have Failed Me...: Had this done to Brownbeard after he allowed himself to be captured by the Straw Hats.
