"The Straw Hat Crew"

  • Anti-Heroes: They generally don't care about the politics of the island they visit and won't do much to fight an oppression. That said, if the oppressing institution attacks them or a person they befriended, odds are they will take up the fight as payback.
  • Badass Crew
  • Berserk Button: The crew as a whole are each people who cherish their friends and loved ones. Even the aloof ones like Zoro or Robin place a great worth on personal bonds. Further, each member has suffered great tragedy in their pasts due to personal bonds (they lost someone, someone hurt someone they cared about, etc.) which makes anyone who acts like a real Jerkass that abuses the bonds of others or the people they are connected to go to the top of the Crew's shit-list with a bullet.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Even the relatively saner ones have their quirks.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of the crew members have a painful past that makes you wanna give them a hug. Robin may have the most painful of the crew, though.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Really becomes evident at during the climax of the Arlong arc.
  • The Idealist: A whole crew of them. They're all driven together by collective dreams.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
  • The Power of Friendship
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: While the crew certainly are filled with nice people, whenever they do save the day, they do so because the villain in question either went after one of their members or allies.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The crew consists of a rubber man, a swordsman, a thief and meteorologist, a cowardly sniper, a kick-boxing chef, a shape-shifting reindeer doctor, an archeologist, a soda-run cyborg, and a living skeleton.

"Straw Hat" Monkey D. Luffy

"I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!"

Monkey D. Luffy is The Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates; your average nineteen-year-old Shonen Idiot Hero, son of Dragon, a revolutionary slated as "The Worst Criminal In the World" and grandson of Garp, a humongously powerful marine vice-admiral who had cornered the Pirate King himself on several occasions. Wants to find One Piece and become the Pirate King. Ate the Gum-Gum Fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi) really Human-Human Fruit Model: Nikaat the age of seven, giving him stretching powers that he has become quite a master of. Also, after training with Silvers Rayleigh, he has mastered the 3 types of Haki (literally "Ambition").

His dream of becoming the Pirate King comes from an incident in his youth involving mountain bandits and a sea serpent that resulted in his idol Shanks losing his left arm. Before leaving Luffy's village the very next day, Shanks gave him his straw hat, telling him to give it back when he's become a great pirate.

He has a bounty of 500,000,000 Berries.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Because of his fight with Magellan and subsequent healing by Ivankov in Impel Down, his body was resistant against the poison given by a Merman assassin, two years later.
  • Adult Child: A perfect example of the trope. Technically averted before the timeskip, as he was still a teenager, but played straight afterward.
  • Angst Coma: Granted, there's a large physical component of exhaustion to it as well, but it's Ace's death that sends him into white-eye gape-mouth land. It's actually so bad that Luffy doesn't even notice he's lost his prized straw hat, after it falls off him while Jimbei is rushing him to safety. This actually lasts two whole weeks for him, and when he wakes up, he flips out.
  • Animal Motifs: A Monkey, duh. Although a video game once had his motif as a lion, which is also a good fit, if you think about it. Lazy as hell, eats huge quantities of meat, courageous, and he will slaughter you if you mess with someone from his group.
  • Anti-Hero: At the beginning of the series, he was a criminal in name only. He was sometimes a bit rude, and beat up "good guys” who really deserved it, but that was all. Later on he's been skirting around the lines of a Type III, and he's even admitted that he doesn't want to be a hero.
    • Though that was more for nonsensical reasons. He immediately agreed to be one after Jinbei promised he would get his meat rather than having to divide among the people. Trust me, It Makes Sense in Context.
    • For the curious, the specific instance that caused many fans to believe he'd slid further down the scale was when he released half the inmates of Impel Down in his quest to save his brother, ignoring Magellan's frankly very good arguments as to why they should stay locked up. Course at the time he was desperate and, as Ivankov's mentions, they needed as much of a force as possible to get out of Impel Down. Especially when your fighting your way from the bottom level to the surface with millions of Marines in your way.
  • Asexuality: One of the closest examples for the trope that Shonen manga is probably ever going to get. Word of God mentions that Luffy is more interested in adventure than women, and that there will be no real romance in One Piece. See Chaste Hero below.
  • Awesome but Impractical: His Gear 2nd technique slowly shaves off his life, and overusing it in a single fight can (or at least it used to) tire him out and leave him open to attack. But Gear 2nd is DAMN awesome.
    • After the Time Skip, he seems to have improved it by having only single a body part(s) under Gear 2nd's effects at one time.
    • A much straighter example would be Gear 3rd, which slowed him down and left him completely vulnerable to Rob Lucci when he tried an extensive use of it. He gets around this later by using it almost exclusively for finishing blows.
  • Awesomeness By Analysis: He observed the CP9 members using Soru, and he soon began using an even faster and superior version of the move while in Gear Second.
  • Badass
    • Badass Adorable
    • Badass Boast: "I'M GONNA BE KING OF THE PIRATES!!!!!" It may not sound like much to our ears, but this statement is considered utterly shocking in-universe, as many mere mortals are scared to challenge the world like this.
    • Badass Family: Just the latest in the Monkey line to cause headaches for the World Government.
      • And if there is any truth that he is somehow related to Roger, this goes double.
    • Badass Longcoat: Wears one in One Piece Strong World.
  • Bad Liar: The only way his lies could be more blatant would be if a neon sign appeared on top of his head every time he lied.
  • Balloon Belly: Comes with being a Big Eater and his elastic nature. Actually uses it in combat to great effect. After the Time Skip, he has learned to more accurately return the projectiles upgrading his belly into an Attack Reflector.
  • Berserk Button: Luffy is usually a really laidback, funloving, and happy sort of guy but even he has things he finds unforgivable. Those things would be....
    • Get between him and his food, and he will be angry. Luffy is a Big Eater and takes his food very seriously.
    • Touch his hat without permission and he will pound you. His idol and the man who inspired him the most, Red Haired Shanks, gave him his hat. Even more so now after he found out it originally belonged to the pirate king Gol D. Roger.
    • Don't be flippant about claiming the title of the pirate king. Luffy sees going for the title of pirate king as sacred and anyone who casually mouths of about becoming the pirate king is disrespecting all of the passionate strong men who have tried and failed (His bother Ace being one). On the other hand if you seriously claim you will become the pirate king with true spirit and determination he will instead see you as a Worthy Opponent.
    • Hurt one of his friends, or for that matter, one of your own, and you are dead. Luffy declared war on the World Government for one of his crew.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: You reeeeally don't want to make him angry. Seriously.
    • One Piece Strong World should have been called Luffy Gets Angry: Shit Goes Down.
    • The same can be said of the sixth movie, the only time when Luffy kills the Big Bad.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Gets quite a few.
    • During the Marineford arc, he manages to pull this trope off as he and the rest of the Impel Down escapees crash down from the sky, ship and all!
  • Big Eater: The elastic stomach probably helps. At multiple points, he eats until his entire body is horribly distended. He can then digest it in about five seconds.
    • Makes sense, if you see how much energy he uses on a day to day basis, let alone during a fight.
  • Bishounen: At least from Hancock's point of view...
    • Luffy has brown eyes, apparently.
  • Book Dumb: Very much so when it comes to science and medicine -- he once tried to heal a wounded Zoro by pouring booze on his face because "Zoro likes sake, so it'll make him better". However, he's a genius in combat, social skills, and politics, beating "wittier" enemies like Eneru.
  • Born Lucky: He has been described as having the Devil's Luck. While the lightning bolt that saved him on the execution platform may have been Dragon's doing, he's survived a number of encounters due only to extreme good fortune.
  • Butt Monkey: Constantly a victim of (comical) abuse from his crew mates due to his stupidity, and he frequently ends up in strange situations that keep him from fighting.
  • Catch Phrase: "I'm gonna be Pirate King!"
  • Cement Shoes: Arlong did this to him in their fight. Surprisingly, the normal vulnerability to water of a Devil Fruit user did not stop his stretching abilities, allowing townspeople to stretch his head out of the water so they could give him CPR when he drowned.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Thanks to the Training from Hell his grandpa put him through, he's strong enough to destroy steel with his bare hands, knock out large sea monsters, and push apart two buildings he was stuck between. And that's not even using his Devil Fruit ability.
  • Chaste Hero: Though he knows what romantic relationships are, he just isn't interested... maybe.
    • And, believe it or not, it becomes a plot point!
  • Chick Magnet: He's one of the only characters in the series to actively have women falling for him, ranging from Alvida (post-Gonk phase), to almost the entirety of Amazon Lily. His reactions range from being suitably creeped-out to complete obliviousness.
    • He's funny, strong-willed, enthusiastic, insanely nice to nearly everybody he meets, and incredibly righteous. Naturally, he has plenty of real life fangirls.
      • He's also young, cute, and seriously well-toned. The girls don't go gaga just because of his personality.
  • The Chosen One: As the series progresses, it seems more and more that Luffy is this. He carries the initial D. and it's been stated time and again that everyone who carries that initial will shake the world. More than that, it's heavily implied that he carries the will of Gol D. Roger the previous pirate king who many have stated that he is the spitting image of in terms of attitude and personality. It's all but cemented with the revelation that his devil fruit isn't a paramecia type but actually a mythical zoan fruit Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika. The original Joyboy who was a key figure in history also possessed this fruit and managed to awaken it's power becoming the embodiment of the Sun God Nika or The Warrior of Liberation who freed people from tyranny and liberated slaves while putting smiles on the faces of those he met. The Five Elder Stars commented that it hasn't awakened in 800 years since Joyboy possessed until Luffy did so during his fight with Kaido. They also stated that the fruit was conscious and actively evaded the world government's attempts to get hold of it meaning that it chose Luffy as its possessor not the other way around.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: When he tries to be at his sharpest outside of battle, he can only pull this off. Most of the time he's something between The Ditz and The Fool.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Luffy is not adverse to hitting below the belt or taking Human Shields when necessary... or if it's amusing.
  • Compelling Voice: A manifestation of his Pure Awesomeness. It used to be involuntary and basically limited to really desperate shouting. He doesn't need to actually speak to use it anymore.
  • Confusion Fu: Luffy, unlike the other characters, seems to fight freestyle. Being rubber makes this befitting. It even turned into an advantage against Eneru, who can read minds. Luffy simply ricocheted his moves off a wall, making it impossible for anyone, including himself, to predict their path.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Voiced by a woman in both the original Japanese and both English dubs.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Often both a badass and a moron at the same time.
    • He actually tries to weaponize his idiot nature in the Eneru fight, in order to defeat his mind-reading. It works, but he also becomes too stupid to remember to attack.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Like all DF users, he's gained incredible powers at the cost of never being able to swim and being branded a freak forever. Not that either of these facts bother him, though.
  • Dead Older Brother: Twice.
    • Subverted, now that Sabo is revealed to be alive.
  • Death Glare: He always stares down enemies, and when pissed gives these. Two particularly intense faces occur, 1st was right before he defeated Lucci with his Jet Gatling. And the 2nd one was to Jinbe while he was having a truly epic Freak-Out on Amazon Lily.
    • Later becomes one of his regular abilities thanks to Haki.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Many of his opponents. Eneru is probably the best example, as he spent most of the Skypiea arc proving how strong he was.
    • Somewhat subverted too. A big part of the character development of Luffy comes from the realization that it's impossible for him to beat the most powerful marines and pirates of the New World. Cue 2 years training with the Pirate King's first mate.
    • A recently big example in the New World is Donquixote Doflamingo. Up until the Dressrosa Arc Doflamingo had never been shown receiving a single scratch.
  • Delayed Reaction: Used a lot of times for comedic effect.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After Ace's death, there is a look of despair on Luffy's face that has never been seen before.
    • Actually, that look was seen once before... when he was melting alive from Magellan's poisons. He felt as if he was dying when Ace was killed.
    • Worse yet, soon after he regained consciousness and the realization kicked in, Luffy questioned his ability to become the Pirate King for the first time in his entire life. He becomes so depressed that he admits defeat and his own weakness, another first.
  • Determinator: Luffy powers through injuries that should have killed him several times over, often without outside assistance. In no particular order, he's been dehydrated to a dessicated husk, skewered, cut, drowned, blown up, bitten (a super strong shark bite, mind you), beaten to a bloody pulp, stabbed, crushed, covered in arrows (in one of the movies), frozen, burnt, shot by lasers, and poisoned to the point of melting, yet is still alive and kicking.
    • The poisoned part was almost a subversion, because it all but killed him. He was healed by Ivankov, but the technique used was explicitly reliant on the patient's will to live and even Ivankov was shocked that Luffy recovered in a few hours, despite his initial estimate that it would take days for Luffy to recover, if he recovered at all.
  • Deus Exit Machina: He's the strongest of the crew along with Zoro, and the most likely to get lost, trapped or otherwise unable to initially participate in battle until the most powerful enemy remains.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: After learning that Big Mam of the Four Emperors is going destroy Fishman Island because they were unable to give her her monthly 10 ton delivery of candy (due to Hody destroying the candy factory and the Straw Hats eating the remaining candy), Luffy does what no other pirate would dare do- he takes the Den Den Mushi (i.e. a phone in the One Piece world) from Big Mam's subordinate and tells her he himself ate all 10 tons of her candy and that it's too dangerous to leave her in charge of the island, so when he gets to the New World he's going to kick her ass and claim Fishmen Island as his OWN territory; Big Mom declares war on the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Disappeared Dad: Luffy was apparently unaware that he even had a father.
    • Come to think of it, where's his mother?
  • The Ditz: In one of the data books, his intelligence score was a whopping 1/5.
  • Dumb Is Good
  • Dumbass Has a Point: There have been moments where he surprises his crew by saying something that actually makes sense.
  • Dynamic Entry: How did he get to Marineford? Well, it overlaps with Big Damn Heroes, 'cause he dropped a ship out of the sky! (It wasn't intentional, but that doesn't make it any less awesome.)
    • Done again in the Fishman Island arc when he leaps out of a shark's mouth and kicks Hody Jones just as he's about to assassinate the king.
  • Enemy Mine: Seems to have a knack for pulling this off, even in the most unlikely of cases. Mihawk actually considers this his most dangerous ability.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Luffy gets called "Straw Hat" by pretty much everyone he fights, with rare exceptions.
  • Expy: Of Son Goku, in a spiritual sense. Oda said he designed Luffy based on what 'manliness' meant to him as a child. Incidentally, Luffy met Goku in the Dragon Ball x One Piece - Cross Epoch crossover. He even got to ride on the Flying Nimbus.
  • Flash Step: When using Gear Second.
  • Freak-Out: When he recovers from his Heroic BSOD and realizes Ace is truly dead. In the anime, he also freaks out when Kuma scatters his crew, and when Ace is killed. The latter example is particularly terrifying, to say the least.
  • Friend to All Living Things: At one point, he was able to befriend a Kraken.
  • Fun Personified: Seriously. On top of everything else, his powers are genuinely like something taken out from a Tex Avery cartoon.
    • Apparently done on purpose - Word of God claims that he made Luffy a rubber man partly because he wanted the hero's fights to always have an element of silliness or the bizarre in them.
  • Funny Afro: He dons one fighting against Foxy. It helps him win.
  • Generation Xerox: He has been compared to Gold Roger by multiple people who've encountered him. Given his simple outlook on life and violence towards anyone who hurts his friends, he can also be seen as a Generation Xerox of Shanks.
    • According to Ivankov, Luffy is very similar to his father, Dragon.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Just like anybody else with D. as their middle initial, he's prone to this trope. Notably, he smiled before Buggy almost cut his head off at Logue Town.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He fights predominantly with his fists, although he discovered an attack involving blasting Pure Awesomeness.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Seems to be a family trait.
  • He Could Barely Stand...: But he STILL got up and kicked Lucci's ass.
  • The Hero: He is the main protagonist, after all.
    • Anti-Hero: A type II. He'll help people if he deems that he "likes them", would rather die than leave a comrade behind, and doesn't do typical pirate things like rape and pillage, but he doesn't necessarily care what people think of him, and if the situation calls for it, he fights dirty and uses his enemies as human shields or human weapons (on one occasion) and destroys public property freely in his many battles and uses trees and buildings as weapons. Also, he frequently Dines-and-Dashes. He briefly bumped into a Type III after releasing all the prisoners in Impel Down in his mission to save Ace; when called on it by Hannyabal, he replied that he didn't care about the consequences. Then again, he does understand that he's a pirate, and so is Ace.
      • Also notable throughout the East Blue Saga, in that he gladly points out at various points that he wouldn't have even bothered to lift a finger to save the various villages that he visits if it weren't for him coming across a few Determinators that he decided were worth saving.
      • Made even more clear just before the big battle against the New Fishmen Pirates. He tells Jinbei that he loves heroes, but he doesn't want to be one.
    • Heroic BSOD: Gets hit with this hard when Ace gets killed.
    • Heroic RROD: His Gear Second pre-Time Skip shortens his lifespan with each use, and will eventually wear him out if overused. Gear Third also might count, although it only shrinks Luffy temporarily after each use, with no mentioned long-term effect.
      • When Ivankov gave Luffy his "miracle treatment" to heal Luffy of Magellan's poison, it took an additional ten years off Luffy's lifespan. Add this to the Gear Second, and the regular damage Luffy takes, and Oda seems to be strongly implying that Luffy will die young.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: The original one is also Krillin and Koenma.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Child abuse isn't funny... except when it involves throwing the child down a ravine, leaving him in the in the wilderness, and attaching enough helium balloons to him to make him float into the sky, all for the purposes of increasing his survival skills. After hearing about it, his crew immediately realizes just where Luffy got his strong will to live from.
  • Hollywood Healing: His battles only leave story relevant scars, like his trademark one under his eye he got in Chapter 1 or the new X shaped scar Akainu gave him.
  • Hope Bringer: A Downplayed Trope as Luffy doesn't go out of his way to help people but when he does decide to hero-up he turns out to be damn good at it as in his short career as a pirate he's rescued every member of his crew and gained their Undying Loyalty, freed whole kindoms from war and corrupt rulers, along with fulfilling the hopes of the people he meets along the way in their time of need. With the reveal that Luffy's devil fruit is actual the mythical zoan fruit Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika this begins to make a lot of sense. Nika was called the sun god and the one who brought light and happiness to those trapped in slavery. He would fight tyranny and free people were ever he went. Since it was also revealed by the five-elder stars that mythical zoan fruit have a consciousness and influence to world to find their user, it makes sense that the Nika fruit would choose someone like Luffy.
  • Hot-Blooded: In fine Shonen fashion. He's a more tranquil version, however.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: As a child who had recently eaten the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy was rather unskilled with his stretching powers -- especially when compared to his mastery at the start of his journey. His signature Gum-Gum Pistol? His first attempt bounced off the ground and back into his own face.
  • I Gave My Word: His word is the greatest thing he can give. He takes it seriously. How serious? He promised Robin he'd be her friend forever, so when she was taken from him, he went on a rampage resulting in the complete annihilation of a World Government island, thousands of dead mooks, and a staggering two hundred MILLION increase in his bounty.
    • He also ignores his word when he feels like it. He gave his word to Hachi repeatedly that he would not mess with a World Noble no matter what happened. He totally kept his word.
      • In that case, the World Noble in question had just shot Hachi, so it was conflicting with his major Berserk Button involving his friends getting hurt. He even apologizes to his crew immediately afterward, knowing that he's just gotten everybody in serious trouble.
  • Idiot Hero: One of the poster boys.
    • In a bit of a subversion, Luffy is actually quite smart for a Shonen Hero, and not just in combat; he has shown an understanding of basic physics, social skills, survival skills, and politics. The 'Idiot' part comes from his simple outlook on life; while he understands that the current of Reverse Mountain has a scientific explanation, he prefers to just call it a "Mystery Mountain" because it's easier and more fun. That sort of description extends to several other subjects.
  • I'm Not a Hero, I'm X: Invokes this with Jinbe. He says he likes heroes, but he knows he's a pirate.
  • Immune to Bullets: They simply bounce off, though in the beginning of the series he claimed to still not like getting shot.
    • Considering how often it's happened since then, he probably got used to it pretty quickly.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Towards everyone at some point, but the standout example would have to be the Mermaid Princess, Shirahoshi.
  • Ki Attacks: After the two year time skip, he has completely mastered Haki and can use it to power up his already strong attacks and predict enemy attacks, just like Eneru and his priests.
    • When he uses Armaments Haki, his body turns dark and shiny, as if his rubber body has gone through a form of vulcanization.
  • Kiai: See the end of his fight with Rob Lucci.
  • Knuckle-Cracking
  • The Leader: A combination of Type III (Headstrong) and Type IV (Charismatic). Has some shades of the Levelheaded Type II, but only when the situation is truly dire.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Does this whenever he's NOT trapped somewhere and can't fight, but the most notable straight example was at the beginning of the assault on Enies Lobby, where he actually took off full speed into the heart of Enies Lobby during the middle of planning, causing his allies to nearly be wiped out. Perfectly summed up here.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Possibly the fastest and most agile member of his crew, he also has incredible durability and strength. Word of God is that only Zoro matches his physical power.
  • Like Father, Like Son: While not spending any of his childhood with his father, he has nonetheless taken after him with his will and dangerous unpredictability, and both are stakes in the World Government's side.
  • Magnetic Hero: Directly acknowledged by Mihawk:

It's not some kind of special power, but he has the ability to make allies of everyone he meets. And that is the most fearsome power on these high seas!

  • Memetic Outfit: The straw hat, in universe, as seen in the "From the decks of the world" cover story and at the end of the Fishman Island arc. The new shipment to the island will include straw hats. Why? Because the kids want to play heroes!
  • The Messiah: Really became obvious during the Whitebeard War, although it was alluded to after the Enies Lobby Incident.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has plenty of fan girls in-universe and in real-life.
  • My Greatest Failure: The Death of Portgas D. Ace.
  • Nice Guy: Just don't touch any of his friends, his meat, or his straw hat.
  • Nice Hat: It's even on his Jolly Roger!
  • No Sense of Direction: Not as terrible as Zoro's, but it's still really bad.
  • Number One Dime: His trademark straw hat is a gift from his idol Shanks, and he treasures it to the point where if he gives it to someone else, it's really saying something. Likewise, if someone ever dares damage it, ass will be kicked in great quantities.
    • Its importance may have been elevated recently, given that a flashback revealed that the hat may have belonged to Gold Roger himself.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Possibly, if the Alternate Character Interpretation above is the truth.
  • Oblivious to Love: He has no idea how Hancock feels about him.
    • Averted, at least after the Time Skip (and possibly before). He knows, but just doesn't care.
  • Older Than They Look
  • Otaku: He displayed a surprising interest in beetles at Jaya and Skypiea.
    • And he remarks about things that are, "So cool/awesome!!!" Especially robots, cyborgs, lasers, any sort of beam weapon, cannons, and really ANYTHING you can relate back to Super Robot anime and manga.
  • Parental Abandonment: While not an integral part of his character, his father willingly left him to go help the rest of the world, his mother hasn't even been mentioned, and his Grandpa made no attempt to at least have him raised near him. Luckily, though, his foster mother and brothers made up for this void, and the only time he ever showed sadness over being lonely was in childhood before meeting Ace.
  • Person of Mass Destruction
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Rather puny in comparison to most of his opponents. He's 19 years old and 5'7", while his opponents range from above 6' to being freaking giants. There's also the case of Coby, who recently went through a growth spurt and is now about Luffy's height.
  • The Pirate That Doesn't Do Anything: Luffy's not interested in pillaging and raping, unlike other Pirates in the series, but only became a Pirate for the sake of adventures. He mostly fights with other Pirates and the Government, but leaves civilians alone.
    • Though he does cause lots of property damage, and he's not opposed to stealing available loot if an opportunity arises. Then there was that prison break...
  • Plot Armor: Lampshaded by Basil Hawkins. He tried several times to calculate a scenario which Luffy couldn't possibly survive, but Luffy always had at least a slim chance.
  • The Power of Friendship: He always believes in his crew, even when they appear to betray or murder one of their own.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Yes, everything stretches, as the inhabitants of Amazon Lily discovered.
  • The Power of Trust: Luffy is an excellent judge of character, successfully allying even with former enemies, both as permanent crewmates (Nico Robin, Franky) and as temporary allies (various other members of Baroque Works). It will be put to the ultimate test with his alliance with rival supernova captain-turned-Shichibukai Trafalgar Law.
  • The Promise: He made one with Ace and Sabo when they were children to go out to sea and live their lives free of regrets.
    • Not to mention the one with Shanks, that he'd return his Straw Hat to him one day after he became a great pirate.
  • Pure Awesomeness: So awesome that simply by yelling with sufficient fury, he can knock out an audience of women warriors or hundreds of marines/grunt pirates. It's because he possesses Supreme King Haki.
    • Hell, after the Time Skip, all he has to do is glare at most weaker opponents and they're on the ground, foaming at the mouth.
    • Taken to new, ludicrous extremes when, in chapter 634 of the manga, he knocks out 50,000 members of the New Fishman Pirates with nothing but a Haki-powered gaze!
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His Gatling, Pistol-Shotgun, Storm, Fireworks, Cannon, Jet Gatling, and Jet Cannon techniques.
  • Real Men Eat Meat
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Zoro's blue, although Zoro can be a little red sometimes.
  • Right Makes Might: If one has a strong ambition, one will always prevail in the end.
  • Rubber Man: Refers to himself as such. Thanks to consuming the Gum-Gum Fruit.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: So much. He's tough as hell, but he has absolutely none of the most basic pirating skills. Lampshaded as part of a Badass Boast when he fought Arlong.
  • Secret Legacy: The mysterious "Will of D." that several characters have mentioned.
    • Goes a bit further when he's revealed to have Roger's hat and can hear the voices of Sea Kings like the man himself could.
  • Signature Move: The Gum-Gum Pistol, Bazooka, Gatling, and Balloon are his 4 most iconic moves, although he typically uses their gear 2nd versions now.
  • Smart Ball: While some of the times he's right are the result of his bizarre or poorly thought out guesses being correct, there are times when he's more reasonable than usual, such as when he tells Vivi that people will die no matter what she does, and defeating Crocodile, rather than intercepting the rebels, is the surest way to stop the rebellion
  • Spanner in the Works: Quite possibly the greatest version of this trope. Ever. Without going into detail, let's just say that most of the arcs, movies, and video games involve him entering the scene and completely ruining the villain's plans right when they're about to be finished. Every time.
    • More often than not, he never even went in intending to stop the villain or knowing the villain even had an evil plan. He is literally just an unexpected variable that happened to mess up the scheme because the villain did just ONE thing wrong. That thing is usually trying to preemptively eliminate him.
    • Reversed with Blackbeard's master plan. Everything Luffy did just worked in favor of Blackbeard's plans, even speeding them up significantly, the most obvious example being the Impel Down incident.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": He's known as Ruffy in some foreign editions, most notably the German translation.
  • Super Drowning Skills: The most common victim of the Devil Fruit users in his crew. Of course, he couldn't swim even before getting his Devil Fruit powers, hence why Shanks's crew nicknamed him "Anchor".
  • Super Mode: His Gear Second and Gear Third techniques.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: Subverted with Nightmare Luffy. He's a scary, giant, evil-looking Hulk-like figure, and Nami and Usopp were initially afraid of him, but he's actually still Luffy on the inside. Just REALLY serious. However, that could be something to do with shadows inside him, since Usopp and Nami noticed he behaves differently.
  • Superpower Lottery: Seemingly an Averted Trope as while his fruit giving him a rubber body certainly makes him durable, most of his strength is from his training and natural fighting skills making his fruit more Difficult but Awesome. The it's Played Straight when it's revealed that Luffy's devil fruit isn't a paramecia type but a mythical zoan fruit that carries the name of a GOD! The world government was hiding the fact that the true name of Luffy's fruit is Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika. Nika was the liberator of slaves also called the warrior of freedom who brought smiles to all. Once Luffy awakened the power of Nika his abilities went from rubber man to Toon Physics enabling him to warp and affect his himself, surroundings and OTHER PEOPLE like he was in a looney toons episode.
  • Terrible Artist
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Lately, after the timeskip, he uses Gear Second attacks for everything. Considering how strong he already is and the fact that he has Haki, his normal Gum Gum attacks should be more than enough to solve his problems, rather than senselessly shorten his lifespan to beat a few minor enemies.
    • He may not have the drawback post-time skip. Still this trope though, as he doesn't need to go Super Mode.
  • Third Time's the Charm: Against Crocodile, though there is a case to be had in his confrontations with Eneru and Rob Lucci.
  • Time to Unlock More True Potential: By the end of the first half of the series, approx. time around the Sabaody Arc, his skills and power are simply no longer enough to beat anybody or anything stronger than a single Pacifista, (with the support of his entire team at that...) and considering Hancock, his "Love Interest" (I use that term lightly) could smash dozens of them in one hit, that really, really was quite pathetic. Thankfully, he got better and after two years of training, he can now also defeat a Pacifista in a single hit (along with a giant KRAKEN, for that matter...)
    • During his fight with Kaido, when it seemed like Luffy DIED, his devil fruit finally awoke. Usually when this happens, it greatly augments the fruits abilities. For a paramecia, it means affecting the surroundings as like Daflamingo creating strings from the environment. For a zoan it means becoming a bigger and stronger version of the animal you transform into. Luffy's fruit is actually a mythical zoan fruit that embodies the sun god Nika. Only Joy Boy 800 years earlier accomplished this. Luffy goes from rubber man to Toon Physics being able to manipulate himself, the surroundings and other people like they were in a looney toons cartoon. It makes him damn near invulnerable, change sizes and shape at will and mess with physics like running on air. It's even called the most ridiculous power in the world both figuratively and literally but makes Luffy the most unpredictable and versatile fighter in the series.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meat. Any kind of meat. (Although he's not as fond of seafood, as revealed by the Fishman Island arc.) Eating it even makes him stronger, and if he's not fighting or playing, he's always seen eating meat.
  • Training from Hell: Went through this in childhood. It involved being thrown into jungles at night and tied to balloons, apparently.
    • Gets another one from Rayleigh, this time to learn how to control Haki.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The Paramount War is one HUGE Break the Cutie moment for our hero, starts during the Sabaody, gets many times worse in Impel Down, AND he finally rescues his brother only for said brother to lose his life protecting him.
  • Trouser Space: Where he keeps the "octopus"...
  • Ubermensch: Luffy refuses to follow the typical code of pirates, a code that revolves around pirating for treasure rather than your dreams, and does not harm civilians and steal. On one occasion, this even got him ridiculed and beaten, but he still stands strong by his beliefs.
    • Although he's not completely opposed to stealing available loot when an opportunity arises (see Skypiea). Granted, they were gonna give him the gold anyway, but he didn't know that.
  • Unskilled but Strong: Has no training at combat or Haki, but his fruit powers and creative use of them are so strong that he can back up his lack of skill with raw power and fighting talent.
    • Post-timeskip, Luffy receives training under Rayleigh on Haki control and learns to master it, but he's still totally dependent on his fruit powers to fight his way through enemies. He also has no skill with weapons or swords, and is a terrible tactician.
  • Unstoppable Rage: On Enies Lobby, the soldiers were literally being sent flying by the hundreds from the moment Luffy got there, and it wasn't over until 3000 had been defeated and he had made his point -- shit was getting serious.
    • On Fishman Island, Luffy has recently began annihilating a massive amount of Mooks without discretion. He has currently taken out 50,000 without even touching them (which is, mind you, more than 16 times the amount he defeated on Enies Lobby), using his Haki, and now he has begun actually attacking them physically. By the looks of things, and considering there was only 100,000 Mooks to start, the rest of his crew might not even be necessary to win the battle.
  • Waistcoat of Style: Until the Time Skip.
  • Weapon of Choice
    • Elemental Punch: He can't generate electricity, but his immunity to it (because he's rubber) allows him to harness it and supercharge his attacks. So far, the only attack he used with this ability was his "Giant Thor Axe", which, needless to say, was ridiculously strong.
    • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Subverted -- His gatling gun techniques only make the illusion that he's grown more arms. But played straight in the sense that it still causes an impact equivalent to being hit by multiple punches at the same time.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer: Most of the situations he's gotten into have been solved through liberal use of punching the right guy in the face. Prior to Marineford, it's typically his only strategy, many times literally just asking whose ass he has to kick.
    • It's fitting, as one of his stronger techniques is also called Gum Gum Mallet and Gum Gum Giant Mallet, which both mean hammer.
  • With My Hands Tied: He one-shoted Vander Decken with his arms chained.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Examples include Alvida, Ms. Valentine's Day, Vivi (as Ms. Wednesday and later in a Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!), Boa Marigold and Sandersonia
  • X Marks the Hero: He got an X-shaped scar across his chest from Akainu's attack at Marineford.
  • Your Size May Vary: Luffy's iconic Straw Hat, through the many Art Evolution phases Oda went and experimented on, our hero's hat has gone from fedora sized to sombrero sized, though it's not an increasing constant, it may get smaller or bigger depending on the arc.
    • Luffy himself is also an example. He's never been tall, but at the start of the series he was mostly average-sized, especially compared to the civilians in the background. Nowadays, he is the shortest character in the series who is not a Gonk, an animal, a child or a woman (though most female characters are still taller than him). His body shape also changes from arc to arc. During East Blue and from Skypiea to Water 7, Oda has went for his signature lanky, long-legged signature. In other arcs, like the more recent ones, Luffy is drawn with rather short legs and the head-to-body ratio of a young child, which makes him look much shorter than he actually is. His height is 172 cm (5'7") for the record.

"Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro

"I am going to be the world's greatest swordsman! (...) Whether a hero or a villain, everyone's going to know my name!"

Roronoa Zoro is the twenty-one-year-old swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates; he utilizes Santoryu (literally "Three Sword Style") in battle, wielding one in each hand along with one in the mouth. Mostly drinks and sleeps in his spare time (when he's not training his ass off), but becomes a real demon in battle that can defeat five hundred Mooks in two seconds. Often wears a green bandanna on his forearm that he ties around his head when he gets dangerous.

Similar to Luffy's goal, Zoro wishes to become the greatest swordsman in the world. Unlike Luffy, however, he needs only to defeat Dracule "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk, the current greatest swordsman in the world, to do so. He actually meets up with Mihawk fairly early in the story, but failed to land a single hit and was sliced by Mihawk's BFS for his trouble. Mihawk, however, held back just enough to leave Zoro alive, and told him to challenge him again when he was ready. Ironically he is trained by Mihawk to be a stronger swordsman.

His bounty is 320,000,000 Berries.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After defeating the Humandrills, he has to beg Mihawk to teach him to get stronger for the Straw Hats' sake.
  • Anti-Hero: Type IV. He can be particularly brutal, as he's a Blood Knight. He was stated by other pirates as being capable of exuding a massive killing intent. Zoro has also stated several times of his willingness to kill. He (along with Robin) are the most vicious and brutal of all the Straw-Hats, and are the only ones who suggest killing as a first resort.
    • Swings into Type II and III territory occasionally.
  • Badass: One of the more prominent examples in the series.

Zoro: You want to kill me?! You couldn't even kill my boredom!

    • Badass Longcoat: After the two-year timeskip.
      • The Coats Are Off: Zoro removed the top part of his coat when he got serious in the battle on Fishman Island.
    • Badass Normal: He's the strongest member of the crew on par with Luffy, and yet he doesn't have any Devil Fruit powers; his power comes from sheer skill and training. In fact, he can take on and defeat Devil Fruit users.
      • Badass Abnormal: He tapped into his potential for Haki during the timeskip.
  • Berserk Button: Don't try to hurt Chopper. It'll make the big guy decide to go back on his policy not to fight for revenge.
    • Insulting Robin is another good way to get your ass kicked. Hard.
      • It's safe to say he would do the same thing for all of his crew.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Out of all the crew, it's Chopper he seems to have a huge soft spot for.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To a degree, towards Luffy.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He often jumps out of nowhere to save someone at unexpected moments. He shielded Nami from Mr.1's attack, stopped Kuma from taking Luffy, and post Time Skip, stopped King Neptune's Trident.
    • More recently, he stopped Hyouzou from attacking Robin. However, considering Robin's lack of concern prior to his intervention and Zoro's offhanded apology over it, the two probably see this particular example more as Zoro stealing Robin's kill than this trope.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: His fights compared to the others as well as his own.
  • Blood Knight: Completely apathetic to everything around him, but once you say you want to fight, voila! You got his interest!
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In episode 223 of the anime.
  • Celibate Hero / Asexual: The only male member of the crew not to peek in the girls' bathroom during the Alabasta arc, and shows a general lack of interest in the opposite sex. He's even proven immune to Nami and Robin's feminine wiles. This is probably a case of "thinks love is a distraction", since he seems to focus almost completely on his fighting ability. Alternatively, Zoro may simply not care about sex and romance in general. May also have something to do with his first female friend, Kuina, dying on him.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Up to Eleven.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: You wouldn't guess it from his usual demeanor, but Zoro just has some moments of total daffiness, and is completely serious during all of them. He yells like Tarzan while swinging on a vine. When Nami has trouble swinging, he claims it's because she "didn't do the call". When he's being turned into a wax statue, he raises his sword into the air and advises everyone to strike a pose.
    • Feet stuck in wax? Handcuffed to someone? Cut off the offending body part.
  • Creepy Good: Zoro is one of only two members of the Strawhats to have killed in the past. Zoro is willing to chop his own feet off to join a fight and creeps the others out with his sheer determination and willpower, not to mention his monstrous strength.

    Usopp, Nami, and Chopper frequently find him "creepy" or "nuts" depending on the situation.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Adequately explains his huge soft spot for Chopper.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Zoro has a really dry wit, and has thrown out some pretty badass Pre Asskicking One Liners.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Zoro's ultimate goal.
  • Determinator: You really can't keep this guy down.
    • His fight against Mr. 1 comes to mind. You must see the amount of punishment Zoro endured during that fight to believe it.
  • Diagonal Cut: Most notably, how he finished off Mr. 1.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: his Three-Sword Style.
  • Fighting Spirit: This is basically how his Asura technique works.
  • Flanderization: Relatively minor case. What started out as having a bad sense of direction eventually becomes being so directionally retarded that in the G8 arc he even manages to bend time and space through the power of getting lost.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Sort of. An octopus was seen stuck on him when he came back up from inspecting a shipwreck. Later, a South Bird was staying near him (though it was to get his food). Chopper, a half-reindeer, usually clamps on his head when he's scared.
  • Full Potential Upgrade: Yubashiri and Kitetsu III were this, as a filler episode's flashback showed Zoro having a tendency to break his second and third swords until he got them.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He did attempt to use them once, in order to shield his eyes from an enemy's flash attacks. This did little good, given that the goggles aren't tinted.
  • Heavy Sleeper: This guy can sleep anywhere at any time, even sleeping through a storm like it was smooth sailing.
    • Or during a snow storm, he doesn't even wake up after being thoroughly COVERED in SNOW; he's even wearing short sleeves.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Offers his life in exchange for Luffy's before a nigh unbeatable foe. Instead, said foe allows him to take in all of Luffy's pain and exhaustion, which was supposed to be a traumatic enough experience to kill him. Naturally, it doesn't. Keep in mind, this was all the pain and exhaustion from someone made of rubber. Everything that he was able to endure thanks to his Devil Fruit powers, forced into a (technically) normal human body.
    • AND, all this was forced into him ON TOP of his own, already superhuman, damage.
  • High-Pressure Blood: Has an infinite supply of it.
  • Hollywood Healing: "Band-aids heal everything."
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Implied to be a source of angst involving the best friend he never got over. It's especially heart-wrenching when you consider that the other Straw Hats were at least assured they were unconditionally cared about by their own loved ones, no matter how tragic the circumstances.
  • Improbable Age: One of the biggest badasses in the series is 19?
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold
  • Ki Attacks: As revealed by Luffy, he can now use Haki after the time-skip. We don't know yet which type of Haki he specializes in, though.
  • The Lancer: To Luffy, again.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: When the bandanna comes on, Zoro will usually use some crazy attack that destroys his opponent, and usually the environment around them. Lampshaded during Enies Lobby.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: An interesting case where the villains barely had to do anything to provoke Luffy into fighting Zoro at Whiskey Peak. They had all been beaten up by Zoro and Luffy was mistakenly led to believe that Zoro did this for the fun of it, when the villains were "nice" to him and the crew beforehand, giving them food and partying with them, all the while waiting for the chance to kill them all.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His physical strength is equal to Luffy's, and he can react fast enough to dodge bullets fired at point-blank range.
    • Post time skip: He's faster than a Fishman, while underwater.
  • Made of Iron: To a mind-blowing extent. He refuses to be incapacitated even after Mr. 1 practically puts him through a meatgrinder. This is most noticeable in the anime, which often downplays how badly Luffy and others are hurt in their fights -- it is kinda hard to do with Zoro, as he almost always fights swordsmen.
  • Mangst: He still carries Wado Ichimonji everywhere.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname is based on that of real life pirate Francois L'olonois.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Qualifies in most areas, most notably that he looks great with his shirt off, which happens more often than not.
  • Never Gets Drunk: One of the greatest examples. Zoro can hold ridiculous amounts of alcohol. Even after out-drinking thirteen people, Zoro went on to fight one hundred trained assassins at Whiskey Peak with no problems whatsoever. He didn't even have a hangover next morning.
    • In the newest chapter, 669, this is somewhat subverted. He, Sanji (in Nami's body), and Brook all get hit by a sleeping gas that is somehow supposed to use alcohol to knock out even the heaviest of drinkers. Zoro does end up falling asleep from the fumes, but it also takes him longer than Sanji or Brook to succumb; long enough that he can slice a needle-laden mountaintop that they're headed toward in half so that they don't all die or get horribly injured.
  • No Sense of Direction: This man is capable of getting lost in a straight hallway.
    • This man is capable of getting lost when a door was in front of him.
    • This man is capable of getting lost when it shouldn't be physically possible.
    • At one point, Chopper got so fed up with his lack of direction that he offered to make Zoro a medication for hopeless idiocy.
    • It gets worse. When he wants to get away from someone, he'll end up running into them anyway.
  • Number Two: In times of emotional crisis for the crew, he's taken responsibility of the crew and reminds Luffy of his duties as a captain, solidifying his position as this. This is most obvious in regards to Luffy's duel with Usopp.
  • One-Man Army: Post Time Skip, he managed to defeat most of the Neptune Army soldiers by himself, and after his capture, he plans to do the same with Hordy's men now. Even Usopp calls him one.
    • Much earlier, in one of the more awesome moments of the series, he single-handedly defeated 100 expert bounty hunters in Whiskey Peak.
  • Overdrawn At the Blood Bank: To an increasingly ridiculous degree.
    • In the 5th movie, the villain says his Cursed Sword will drink all of Zoro's blood. Poor thing probably would have exploded from overfill.
    • They made fun of this in Episode 523. They showed Zoro looking at nine pint bags of blood that were being transfused into Sanji, angling as if he had given it all.
  • Parental Abandonment: There has been no mention of his parents at all. All we know is that he trained at the dojo at a young age.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Zoro used to smile and laugh quite frequently in early arcs. This changed after his defeat at the hands of Mihawk. Since then, he kind of developed a bad temper as pointed out by Sanji in the Arlong arc.
    • Debatable, but it seems he got better post-Time Skip.
  • Pet the Dog: He has his moments with kids. He's not usually trying, but they're there.
  • Power Glows: Occasionally, he will glow when he performs any of his more potent attacks as well as creating illusions, thought of by Kaku as being the power of his spirit.
  • Quit Your Whining: Says this to Chopper after he gets forcibly taken into Foxy's crew as a result of the Straw Hats losing the first round of the Davy Back Fight.
  • Rated "M" for Manly: Taken as far as possible.
  • Razor Wind: His Tatsumaki and Pound Hou techniques.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Luffy's red.
  • Slasher Smile: He shows a great deal of enthusiasm when it comes to getting into fights.
  • The Southpaw: While it is clear that Zoro is ambidextrous, he seems to be predominantly left-handed. He keeps all of his swords sheathed next to his right hip, meaning it would be easier to pull a sword with his left hand. When wielding a single sword, Zoro usually uses his left hand. His single sword techniques have nearly always been executed with his left hand.
    • Also, in Movie 5, in his fight against Saga, Saga stabbed Zoro's left hand after telling him that he had "lost his dominant sword hand in battle."
  • Spell My Name with an "S": The Fan Wank over the Zoro vs. Zolo debate is ridiculous, especially considering that his name is an intentional reference to Zorro. Not helping matters is that in the US (at least for TV and the manga) it has to be "Zolo" or they'll get sued by the people that own Zorro.
  • The Stoic: He's a lot more reserved than most of the crew, often taking negative events without losing his composure. He's often the crew's voice of reason.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: After Luffy's explanation on the difference between pirates and heroes: heroes share meat, pirates don't, for which Zoro was not there, Zoro gives an incredibly similar analogy, except he substitutes booze for meat.
  • Sword Crazy: The accusations may be justified.
    • Well, if certain names of his attacks are symbolic, it's actually very possible he's not quite right in the head.
    • Zoro seems quite aware that he's crazy. However, as stated, he is the only one allowed to call himself that.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Wado Ichimonji, his only consistent sword, used to belong to his childhood friend/rival Kuina, and after her death he uses it to remind himself of their promise to become great swordsmen.
  • Trash Talk: Zoro is the Straw-Hat Pirates' resident trash talker in a fight. He enjoys telling his opponents things like "The reason you've never lost is because you've never met me", and of course, he always gives out a "Post Asskicking One-Liner", in which he usually comments on how his opponents were a mere stepping stone for him.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Never outright stated, but sure would explain a lot. Kuina was pretty much the only girl Zoro ever really related to, and if it's true that the attachment was that deep, it would squish the idea that Zoro got off easy compared to the other crew members flat.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Sanji. The two make quite an impressive team... When they're not fighting, arguing, or hurling insults at each other (which is to say, most of the time).
  • Volleying Insults: Gets into this quite frequently with Sanji.
  • Weapon of Choice: His three katanas: Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Shuusui. He's consistently had Wado Ichimonji, but had gone through several other swords before getting his current remaining pair.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: His attacks often contain references to Buddhism and mythical demons. Ironically, Zoro himself claims to be atheist.
    • Also, references to sushi. Like Oni Giri (Demon Slash).
  • What Exactly Is His Job?: Fanon typically pegs him as the First Mate, but this has yet to be explicitly stated in-story.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Zoro fully intended to sacrifice himself as part of a deal with Kuma to spare the rest of the Straw Hats. When he made this deal, he was under the assumption that everyone else was unconscious.
  • Wisdom from the Gutter: Zoro is the one to impart knowledge about how a pirate should behave within their group; aspects such as respect, roles and trust are brought up by him when the Straw Hats are in the middle of some inner conflict as seen during the Davy Back Fight and Water 7. Interesting to note is that Zoro only does this when Luffy, the Captain, isn’t the one voicing this out or he is also participating in the turmoil; the exact course of action a First Mate would take, if they ever had one.
  • The Worf Effect: Often loses to main villains of the arc, especially Buggy, Arlong, Eneru, Oars and Moria, and Kuma in order to show how powerful they are.
    • Worf Had the Flu: On the other hand, a good chunk of those opponents were immune to swords, to varying degrees. Buggy can't be cut at all because swords only disconnect his floating body parts. In Arlong's case, Zoro was recently really run through the gauntlet, had already been in a fight, and was using a type of sword he wasn't used to, so it was hardly surprising there. Eneru is made out of pure electricity, so he couldn't be touched. Kuma doesn't count: he didn't just beat Zoro, he curbstomped the entire Straw Hat crew and everyone else.
  • You Can Barely Stand: Happens to him ALL the time, with his fight with Mr. 1 being a defining example.
    • Also the Kuma Incident at Thriller Bark.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: It's not that Zoro can't go home. It's just that he doesn't know the way, seeing how he's got a lousy sense of direction.
  • Younger Than They Look: Can you believe that somebody who looks like that is 19; of course, he drinks like a fish, and has been training himself for about half his life to kick ass.
  • You Gotta Have Green Hair: Sanji likes to make fun of him this way, calling him "Marimo" (Moss Head).


"Cat Burglar" Nami

"What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all!"

The twenty-year-old navigator of the Straw Hats, Nami was initially introduced as a thief who detested pirates and stole from them. Her years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, though they do get on her nerves from time to time, and their journey would have been nigh impossible without her near-supernatural abilities to read the ocean currents and predict weather phenomena, leading some to wonder if she's actually a witch. She uses a weapon called the Clima-Tact, later upgraded to the Perfect Clima-Tact and currently the Sorcery Clima-Tact.

Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the Fishman pirate Arlong. She owes a great deal to the others and especially Luffy for this, and is often the only member of the crew other than Zoro to personally confront or remind him of the deep, gut-wrenching choices that he must face.

Her bounty is 66,000,000 Berries.

  • Action Girl: Not at first, but starts growing into the role after being given her Clima Tact.
  • Anti-Hero: Starts off as a less extreme than usual Type IV (not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die) due to her past, but moves into the role of a Type III with shades of Type II, eventually becoming a straight example of Type II.
  • Armor-Piercing Slap: She's one of the few characters able to render Luffy a bruised and bloody mess. Word of God says that it's because her blows are "emotionally and spiritually charged".
  • Author Appeal: Oda is Happily Married to Chiaki Inaba, the actress who played her in the Jump Festa stage performances. Oda thinks his wife is incredibly sexy (and let's be fair, she is very pretty), and as a kind of tribute to her, altered Nami's design to show it off.
  • Badass Adorable
  • Badass Normal: No Devil Fruit powers, but the Clima-Tact more than makes up for it.
  • Bare Your Midriff: A few of her outfits sport this, but her first timeskip design is the most evident case of this.
  • Bathing Beauty: Gets a few of these scenes occasionally.
  • Berserk Button: Do not spend money without consulting her first. Do not steal anything from her, especially if she stole it first. And, above all else, do not hurt the people she cares about.
  • Breast Expansion: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in Comic Book Time, but apparently she's just prone to growth spurts. At the age of 20. Every other week of her life. And the fans rejoiced.
  • Brown Eyes
  • Can't Catch Up: Usopp somewhat fixes this problem for her. She's not quite as strong as her crewmates, but she's got a respectable record, taking out Miss Double Finger from Baroque Works and Kalifa from CP9.
  • Cat Fight: Gets into these all the time, but her fight with Kalifa in which Nami herself is scantily clad and getting rubbed all over by the buxom, fishnet-fond Kalifa using her "Slippery wet soap powers" takes the cake.
  • Cowardly Lion: Less than Chopper and Usopp, but she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Twice. The first was in the Water 7 arc [dead link], when she didn't fight at all. The second was in the Enies Lobby arc [dead link], where she more than proved her worth as an Action Girl.
  • Elemental Powers
    • Blow You Away: Enemy face, meet tornado in a stick.
    • Shock and Awe: Her Perfect Clima Tact, essentially a super-taser on a stick, can create lightning strikes and other electrical discharges under the right conditions.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In the manga, as of recently.
  • Fiery Redhead: One of the more emotional members of the crew.
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: The Clima-Tact's most basic function is to create three types of air bubbles named the Heat Ball, Cool Ball, and Thunder Ball.
    • Slight subversion in that the Heat and Cool Balls are useless as attacks, and tend to be used for weather manipulation only.
  • Gainaxing: In the 7th movie sometimes they bounce wildly when she moves very little.
  • Guile Hero: Her usual approach; when she first meets Luffy, she calls him "Boss" to get the guys chasing her off her tail.
  • Jerkass Facade: Acted like this during the Arlong arc to try to prevent the Straw Hats from interfering in her business with Arlong, but it came crumbling down along with her attempts to resolve the situation herself.
  • Magical Girl: Often called a witch, with her weather control capabilities and seductive nature.
  • Meganekko: Sometimes when she's at work.
  • Meta Girl: Spends a lot of her early appearances reacting to Luffy and Zoro's inhuman abilities. Actually, almost everyone falls into this role when introduced to the wackiness of the Strawhat Crew, but the more human members (like Nami) keep it up longer. Like most of the other characters, she now reacts to how strange the people that the Straw Hats meet are instead.
  • Money Fetish: She's such a classic case that she's the Page picture. See Ms. Vice Girl below.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Most conventional in the world, as she's: stacked, bouncy, flirtatious, and rarely covers her stomach.
  • Ms. Vice Girl: She is obsessed with money and often cons other characters (including her own crewmates) out of their hard-earned cash. Despite this, her good qualities still outweigh her greed. In the Arlong Park arc, it's shown exactly why she's so fixated on getting rich. The habit doesn't exactly die after the fact, but she slowly gets better about it, at least.
  • Mundane Utility: Weather control makes a great weapon. It also makes showering anywhere a lot easier.
  • Never Gets Drunk: Nami can hold her liquor just fine. She out-drinks fifteen people and goes on like it was nothing.
    • Somewhat of a subversion. She actually DOES get drunk, but only after outdrinking over a dozen people first. She wakes up an hour or so later sober with no hangover.
  • Not So Above It All: Gets her fair share of this. She can be just as goofy as the rest of the crew.
  • Only Sane Woman: Has bemoaned how their crew always seems to attract the weird ones.
  • Out of Focus: Her dream as a child was to drawn maps of all places she visited, and eventually a World Map itself; Arlong made her dream a nightmare, but when Nami parted ways with her village to join Luffy's crew, she expressed again her dream to draw maps; since then however, Nami isn't seen drawing maps of any kind.
    • She can be seen drawing maps in anime filler multiple times. These might be scenes that were cut out of the manga because they weren't necessary to move the plot forward.
  • Pirate Girl: She wasn't at all proud to work with Luffy at the start of the series due to watching a pirate kill her mother and being basically enslaved by that same pirate at the start of the series. Thanks to Luffy intervening, however, she now embraces her role as a pirate, as it has brought her many great friends and lots of money.
  • Science Hero: Meteorological science.
  • She's Got Legs
  • Ship Tease: She's been seen to be quite fond of Usopp from times to times. She wept after he left during the Enies Lobby arc and was the most adamant to defend him against Zoro when he came back. She also buried his face in her chest when they meet each other after the Time Skip. Keep in mind she would have never do that for any other male of the crew.
  • Shouldn't You Stop Stealing?
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Just before the crew entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked who had the highest and lowest IQ of all the characters introduced so far; he replied that Shanks's first mate, Captain Kuro, and Nami were the smartest, but he couldn't decide which characters were the dumbest because almost every other character is an idiot or a space case.
  • Tattooed Crook: Very important to her backstory, and hot.
  • The Tease: Two words. HAPPINESS PUNCH. Observe!
  • Teen Genius: When we are first introduced to her, she is eighteen and knows the ins-and-outs of sailing various kinds of ships, an almost entirely instinctive knowledge of climatology and meteorology, and an incredible knack at cartography that she had been refining since she was only ten years old. Word of God states she was the third smartest character introduced in the East Blue Saga. The other two were pirates with years of experience, one being the first-mate of one of the most powerful men in the world. So yeah, she's smart.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Vivi's Girly Girl, though it's all relative as neither is very tomboyish or girly.
    • Also the more passionate and headstrong of the two ladies aboard the Thousand Sunny, although her hobbies are much more girly than Robin's, whose are just... weird.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Every time she gets a new Clima Tact (i.e. in Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and after the timeskip), but special mention needs to go to her after the timeskip, where she electrocutes a whole bar, takes down Fishman soldiers (who are 10 times stronger than normal humans, mind you) like they were nothing, and even displays the ability to make herself invisible with mirages to steal a very important document from Fishmen on power-increasing steroids. Also, she doesn't seem to be a coward anymore -- except for the fight against the Kraken. For example, she doesn't even flinch when having a gun pointed against her temple.
  • Took a Level In Kindness: Gradually as the series has gone on, but especially after the timeskip. From forgiving Hachi, to immediately hugging Usopp and Chopper when they reunite, to even immediately forgiving Jinbei for letting Arlong loose on East Blue, she's come a pretty long way from the Jerkass Facade she started out with.
    • Not to mention, she almost never hits her crewmates anymore, starting after the timeskip.
  • Tsundere: Type A. Gets pissed at the idiotic nature of her crew despite being very close to them; completely understandable, of course. Becomes less and less pronounced as time passes, slowly replaced with exasperation.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: ...Or as Oda calls it, "The Hidden Nami Valley!"
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: Post Time Skip.
  • Weak but Skilled: Her knowledge of the weather and her tools have gotten her out of tight spots more than once. Note the "weak" here is only in correlation to her crew.
  • Weapon of Choice: Her Clima Tact and later Perfect Clima Tact. Before those she used a normal wooden quarterstaff.
    • Cool Sword: One of her new techniques is to create a wind sword.
    • Magic Staff: It even creates small-scale weather effects.

"The King of Snipers" Usopp

"I am the Great Captain Usopp!"

Usopp serves as the crew's sharpshooter. He had a reputation on his home island of being a serial liar who claimed that pirates were attacking, which came back to haunt him when pirates actually attacked. He's a rather boastful nineteen year-old who likes to tell tall tales (several of which actually do come true, after a fashion), though he's more prone to hiding behind the stronger crew members such as Zoro when he actually gets into a fight. However, when push comes to shove he is very dependable. He specializes in the use of a slingshot, called the Galaxy Slingshot (Ginga Pachinko), which he replaced with the Kabuto and later the Black Kabuto.

His dream is to better himself and become a brave warrior like his father, who serves on board the ship captained by Shanks, Luffy's idol. According to Word of God, he is the physically weakest member of the crew, and his worries about not being able to keep up with the stronger members and resulting inner turmoil put him at odds with Luffy during one story arc, and ultimately resulted in the creation of an alter ego dubbed Sogeking which he uses to draw on his inner strength and courage.

His bounty is 200,000,000 Berries

  • Abnormal Ammo: It was one thing to be shooting hot sauce and gas bombs, among other things. Now he's shooting seeds which instantly grow into man-eating plants.
  • Achilles in His Tent: Water 7 and Enies Lobby, as a result of Luffy changing ships and feeling that he'll always lag behind the others.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: One look at his nose should tell you he's a liar.
  • Bad Liar/Consummate Liar: Alternates between these.
  • Badass
    • Badass Beard: He grows a goatee during the Time Skip.
    • Badass Boast: "I am the great Captain Usopp! I have destroyed islands with my 8000 followers!"
      • Now in the manga: "It's true, I've deteriorated...I used to lie a lot more...NOW I CAN ACTUALLY DO THOSE THINGS!" Hell yeah..
    • Badass Normal: He doesn't have the superpowers of Luffy or the super strength of Zoro and Sanji, but he's still capable of challenging opponents much stronger than him... when he gathers the courage to do so, that is.
      • It's implied that after the Time Skip, confronting fearsome opponents is less of a problem for him now.
  • Big Damn Heroes: To himself with his own alter ego.
    • Sogeking saving Robin while she was on the brink of the Gates of Justice certainly counts.
  • Bond Breaker: The entire argument and fight between himself and Luffy over leaving or keeping a heavily damaged Merry. Why do you count him here? The entire debacle happened before we found out that Merry was sentient.
  • Butt Monkey: Every now and then.
  • Calling Your Attacks: While everyone in the series does this, Usopp subverts this trope by deliberately miscalling his attacks.
  • Can't Catch Up: Part of the reason he temporarily leaves the crew.
  • Charlie Brown From Outta Town: Sogeking.
  • Cowardly Lion: Once his bravado wears off.
  • Crazy Prepared: His fight with Luffy shows us what Usopp can really pull off with a little prep time and prior knowledge of his opponent.
    • Then, he made a hundred ways to apologize to him. Spent days doing that, and in the end none of them were of any use, but intention is what matters.
    • His boast during his fight with Daruma indicates that he has improved his ability to put together Crazy Prepared-style battle strategies on the fly.
  • Crying Wolf: Comes back to bite him in the ass when pirates really do come to his island.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father Yasopp left his family behind to be part of Shanks's crew, but they don't hold it against him.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: His tall tales eventually gained him this status in Skypeia, where cover stories show a "Rubber Band Land" (as he'd claimed he'd destroyed the Giant Jack with his "Usopp Rubber Band") featuring a statue of himself looking not unlike Shandian hero Calgara.
  • Friendly Target: Suffered through this during the Water 7 arc.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: His main contribution to the crew.
  • Gag Nose
  • Genius Ditz: He knows nothing outside of making things and fighting. Nothing.
  • Green Thumb: After the Time Skip, he's able to fire off things ranging from man-eating plants, to seaweed, to bamboo spears.
    • Fantastic Flora: Some of the Pop Green plants are quite strange, such as a plant that has a bouncy bubble on it and a wolf-shaped bushes, the bulbs of which release shock waves.
  • He Is All Grown Up: Hello, Mansopp!
  • Heavy Voice: Has one after gaining weight on the Bowin Islands.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: He's able to take out soldiers several hundred yards away while standing on the roof of a building that's a good couple hundred feet tall. While it was very windy. With a goddamn slingshot/staff thing.
    • Notably, the soldiers he's shooting at point out that even if they were able to aim reliably at this distance, their rifles couldn't shoot that far.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He often alternates between bragging and being either cowardly (when played for laughs) or deeply insecure in his skills (when it isn't). This has lessened with Character Development during and after the Water 7 arc.
  • Insanity Immunity: If you replace 'being insane' with 'having a low self esteem', this is why he is not impacted by Perona's negative hollows.
  • Kiddie Kid: Usopp was introduced as a 17 year old young man who spent his time hanging out with a bunch of 8 year olds and told outrageous lies for no real reason other than the fun of it. Part of his character development is him turning from this into a true man like his father.
  • Large Ham: He gets a little theatrical when boasting, but it's when he's being Sogeking that he really begins to ham it up.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: Sogeking
  • Miles Gloriosus: In his introduction chapter.
  • Never Bareheaded: He always has some kind of headgear on.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Word of God pegs him as the guy who will always be the weakest of the crew. Lampshaded when he says he can't keep up with the rest of the crew's "monster" strengths during the Water 7 arc
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Sogeking. Only Luffy and Chopper failed to realize that it was actually him.
  • Possession Implies Mastery: Played straight. Usopp can operate or make wondrous inventions out of anything he can put his hands on, including a cannon (which he's never operated before), advanced fireworks, and the bizarre "Dials" of Skypiea (which he could never, ever, have seen or researched). His immediate understanding of any object in his possession would border on intuitive aptitude if he weren't so miserable at making repairs to the ship.
  • Punny Name: It's a cross between "uso", the Japanese word for lie, and "Aesop".
  • Running Gag: The "Rubber Band of Doom" attack, consisting of Usopp simply flicking a rubber band at the enemy. Whenever Usopp gets in a long string of attacks, expect the Rubber Band of Doom attack to show up right in the middle.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: When he lies, he speaks of himself as a Marty Stu. Only Chopper believes him, though.
  • The Smart Guy: He's come up with some decent plans and tricks to use in battle over the years. During their duel, he even discovered ways to bypass Luffy's innate rubber defense.
    • Though outside of battle and his workshop, he's firmly in the chick category.
  • The Storyteller: He frequently tells stories, and his name is a reference to Aesop.
    • There's actually a Running Gag throughout the series of Usopp's stories actually coming true.
  • Team Normal: Along with Nami. Causes some self-worth issues at one point, but he eventually gets over it and becomes an ever-increasingly Badass Normal.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Again, Sogeking. Anyone who's read this far knows what I'm talking about.
    • Post-timeskip, damn! He has broader shoulders, large biceps, and muscles, oh my!
  • Trick Bullet: all of his ammunition.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Ended up here at the beginning of the Skypiea saga. Drowning, then falling, might do that to somebody.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Post Time Skip.
  • Weak but Skilled: Physically the weakest of the crew (Word of God says, no matter what, he always will be), but he's able to come out on top through a wide array of tools and gadgets.
    • The best example of this for Usopp Sogeking would be sniping soldiers on top of the tower at Enies Lobby... where the wind was against him and not even guns can fire accurately. At a range guns can't even reach!
    • His tools and gadgets now include summoning man-eating plants. Not to mention he's actually pretty buff now.
  • Weapon of Choice
    • Brats with Slingshots: It's his primary weapon, after all. Later, he upgrades to the Kabuto, a slingshot/staff hybrid.
    • Drop the Hammer: The few attacks that don't involve his slingshots seem to be this; a slight subversion in that two of his hammers are anything but deadly. Although both of them seem to have some sort of psychological effect on the target.

"Black Leg" Sanji

"The Marines may not be concerned with me right now, but soon I, Black Leg Sanji, will be the most infamous of all!"

Sanji is the crew's chain-smoking, twenty-one-year-old chef. There is not a dish he cannot cook, a pretty girl he will not woo, or something he will not argue with Zoro over. As a chef, he believes that he cannot afford to harm his hands, and so uses a fighting style which uses only his feet called the "Black Leg Style" (Kuroashi no Waza). He and Zoro argue and fight so regularly that it almost borders on Foe Yay.

His dream is to find a legendary patch of sea called All Blue, where one can find species of fish from all over the world. His mentor, former-pirate-turned-restaurant-owner Zeff, is one he shares his dreams with, and Sanji worked under him as a way to pay Zeff back for saving his life when the two were stuck on a rock with barely any food when Sanji was a child.

Sanji has also shown some Butt Monkey tendencies lately, as he's become the butt of an ever-increasing list of jokes, including a ugly, poorly drawn bounty poster that no one has any trouble identifying him with, a man who resembles said bounty poster coming for revenge, and most recently, Kuma blasting him to an island filled with, of all things, transvestites, leading him to declare that he is in Hell. While there, he learns of a special recipe to make the consumer stronger and trains with the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters.

His bounty is 177,000,000 Berries. and as of his most recent bounty, wanted "Only Alive"

  • AB Negative: It turns out Sanji has a rare blood type. This becomes extremely problematic when the Nosebleed after Nosebleed he'd been suffering and had been Played for Laughs after being exposed to real women again caused him to go through all of Chopper's stock of that specific type. As a result, when a mermaid tries to keep him hidden by stuffing him into Marshmallow Heaven, he has such an epic gusher that it becomes life-threatening.
  • All According to Plan: He's the tactical mastermind of the crew and pretty much all of his plans work out the way he wants them to. But the most notable incident still is his Mr. Prince, complete with him saying those exact words while smiling deviously.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: The chances of him actually scoring with anyone he's wooed are practically nonexistent.
    • Although the Mermaids seem to like him a lot. Too bad he developed a Weaksauce Weakness to them. Until meeting Shirahoshi, that is.
  • Almighty Janitor: At least at first. During the Alabasta Arc, he goes around kicking ass without even being recognized as a Straw Hat. He wasn't as well known as even Usopp at that point, but he'd still in the top three.
  • Badass

    • Badass in a Nice Suit: Quite spiffy looking with that blue pinstripe shirt and classic black suit.
    • Badass Normal: Not normal by our standards, but he's the only Strawhat to not use either a Devil Fruit or a weapon, so he's literally just going with the rest of the crew and fighting with his bare feet.

  • Berserk Button: Never insult his culinary skills, waste food, mistreat a woman, or steal his dream of eating the Clear-Clear Fruit (Suke Suke no Mi).
    • Yeah, and saying he can't protect people? Don't do that. Just... don't.
    • Weaponized for his Hell Memories attack.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Let's face it, no remotely important characters in One Piece are remotely realistic, as far as their abilities are concerned. But who else goes as far as to perform plastic surgery in the middle of battle by rapidly kicking their opponent in the face?
  • Big Damn Heroes: "Mr. Prince", followed later by "The Hunter".
  • Bishonen: A masculine example.
  • Bond One-Liner: Has a habit of giving these after winning major fights.
  • Brooklyn Rage: In the 4Kids dub, Sanji was given a thick Brooklyn accent and an angry disposition.

  • Catch Phrase: "Crap" as a prefix (e.g. his nickname for Zeff, "Kuso Jijii", means "Shitty Old Man"). It's almost a tic, since he uses it when describing non-crappy things, like 'dates' with Nami. This pisses her off enormously.

  • Characterization Marches On: It's strange to think that he once (in the manga at least) almost shot Nico Robin, albeit an instinctive reaction to Vivi being threatened. What ever happened to that pistol, anyway?
    • He knows he can't hit her, so he grabbed a pistol hoping it would intimidate her. It doesn't work.
    • As for the pistol, either it was just owned by the whole crew or Nami took it or had it given to her, because at one point (at least in the anime), Nami is seen holding it while preparing to fend off a possible attack.
    • A different thing is how he used to be able to attract women. Very, very weird when you look at his more recent portrayals.
      • Actually, it may just be the main cast. Both the Newkamas and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Considering his legs are strong enough to casually kick away large sea monsters, he definitely qualifies.
  • Chef of Iron: A classic Type 1, and he despises Type 3.
  • The Chew Toy: Started to become this roughly around Enies Lobby, when he learned Kokoro was a mermaid.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Sees himself as a knight in shining armor, while at the same time has no objections to engaging in voyeurism. Not to mention he's still incredibly loyal to his friends.
  • Cooking Duel: Gets into a few in anime Filler. He always wins, of course.
  • Dance Battler: Uses only his feet to fight, resulting in this on occasion.
  • Defeat by Modesty: During his (filler) duel against the substitute "Queen" of Kamabakka, he's soon forced to resort only to weak, low kicks because his opponents keeps peeping at his bloomers when he tries to kick him.
  • Double Jump: After the Time Skip, he can replicate CP9's Geppou, except he calls it "Sky Walk", and fly; that's what you get for running away from Creepy Crossdressers for two straight years.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Duval's slip of the tongue reveals he's got a crush on Sanji. And he had the drag queens on Okama Island hitting on him and dressing him up for two years. Poor guy.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: His attack names.
    • ARMEE DE L'AIR ROBO SHOT!!! sounds better than "Air Force Robot Shoot".
  • Extremity Extremist: His legs, of course.
  • Flash Step: One of the skills he obtained during his stay on Momoiro Island.
  • Food Porn: Any scene where he's cooking/ serving food inevitably turns into this, as demonstrated during the filler G8 Arc.
  • Fool for Love: Fool? He's a self-confessed slave to love.
  • Going Native: On the island of transvestites...
  • Genius Bruiser: Is very smart as well as strong and extremely fast.
  • Gratuitous French: Most of his attacks are cooking terms in French.
    • Which wasn't kept in the 4Kids dub, instead giving every attack a corny food pun.
  • Guile Hero: Pretty good at making strategies, this trait was notably seen in the Alabasta as "Mr. Prince". With the amount of taunting and misdirection that went Crocodile's way, I think it's pretty safe to say he was the closest thing to a rival Chessmaster (after Nico Robin) in that arc.
    • The Strategist: Proven to be one of his defining characteristics at least twice in every arc that followed Alabasta.
  • Handsome Lech --> Casanova Wannabe: At first, his perverted tendencies were accompanied by women actually finding him attractive and charming, but later on, his advances are always met with rejection and/or physical abuse.
    • Seems to be going back the other way. Both the Newkamas and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He seemed like this back when Nami was the only girl around he could try to woo most of the time. This changed once other ladies joined the crew and it became more and more apparent he'd hit on anything with shapely hips and a nice rack.
  • Hot-Blooded: Usually when the ladies are in danger or he's sufficiently angry, he gets so Hot-Blooded that he actually bursts into flames for comedic effect. It's also the author's explanation for him being able to pull off Diable Jambe, breaking the laws of physics in the process. It Runs on Nonsensoleum indeed.
  • Humiliation Conga: To sum up, he was defeated by Kuma, sent on a island full of Drag Queens, is accidentally mistaken for a crossdresser by the inhabitants, chased along the whole island, forced to fight the "Queen" in dress and make up, humiliated and tricked into becoming a crossdresser himself. Thankfully, he got better.
    • Let's not forget how he was forced to admit that his poorly drawn Wanted Poster is actually him in order to get Ivankov to tell him about what happened to Luffy. This is such a monumental strain for him it actually results in Blood From the Mouth.
  • Incendiary Exponent: Weaponized, via his Diable Jambe technique.
  • Ironic Hell: Blasted to an island of transvestites at the end of Sabaody and forced to join in. Kuma must have a twisted sense of humor... Also see Training from Hell below.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Towards the male members of the crew.
  • Jizzed in My Pants: Though with massive nosebleeds. After spending 2 years on an island full of transvestites, it's become rather easy to set him off.
  • Ki Attacks: Post time-skip, he has awakened Haki. However, we still don't know which type he specializes in.
  • Knife Nut: Sanji firmly believes that kitchen knives should not be bloodied in battle, as they are sacred instruments meant solely for the preparation of food. When fighting an opponent whose armor and weapons were made of food, though, Sanji decided that using knives to get rid of the armor would be no different from using knives to prepare a meal and displayed an incredible knife-fighting style.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Of the Hard-Hitting-Speedster variation, as he's the second fastest member of the Strawhats while his physical power is roughly the same as that of Zoro.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: He'll do anything for a glimpse at ANY part of a woman, and while he's been hinted to peep (which is NOT ok in real life) it just makes him more awesome.
  • Love Can Make You Gonk: He can make some pretty strange facial expressions when he's gushing over pretty women.
  • Made of Iron: One of his latest stunts was to fight a Kraken 5000ft underwater. It was so fast that he didn't even suffer from the pressure.
  • Man, I Feel Like a Woman: When Law puts his heart in Nami's body, Sanji can't resist the urge to peep at or feel him/herself up.
  • Marshmallow Heaven: Has received this twice, both times from beautiful mermaids, much to his delight.
  • Mistaken For Crossdresser: By a whole flock of crossdressers.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Unfortunately for straight male One Piece fans, looking for art of him on the internets will cause pages and pages of Ho Yay and Bishonen pictures with Zoro. And unfortunately for him, none of his fan girls in real life can reach him through the computer screen.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: His torso became fairly well built after the time-skip, developing more defined abs than he previously had; but his overall physique remains very skinny, with his limbs actually being just about on par in lack of bulk or muscle with Nami's arms and legs. But, regardless, he can still send men twice his size and muscular-build flying with a single kick and launch giant monsters into the air like nothing.
  • Nosebleed: It happens so much during a period of shock after being separated from women he actually needs a blood transfusion.
  • Oh Crap: Usually calm and composed, he had an epic one when he realize who exactly are the inhabitants of Momoiro.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: His left eye has always been covered by his hair, though Word of God says that it's perfectly functional under there. He's even held a pair of binoculars up to it before. Later on, he switched the bangs to the other side, revealing that both his eyebrows swirl in the same direction.
  • Playing with Fire: His "Diable Jambe" technique involves lighting his effing leg on FIRE, via friction, and attacking with it. Interestingly, while Oda joked that his Hot Blood is what allows him to do it, it seems to be turning into a true ability, with him bursting into flames during his anger and characters commenting on it on enough occasions to make one wonder if it was just a joke or not.
    • Confirmed to be canon in chapter 646. Sanji, in some kind of way , can actually ignite his entire body on fire by "thinking of those 2 years in hell" and then transfer that fire onto his opponent with a kick. It's pretty epic.
  • Princely Young Man: You could sort of consider him one, not to much by virtue of him thinking he's a prince, but the fact that he treats Nami and Robin like princesses and sort of thinks of himself as their knight.
  • Punny Name: His name is a pun on the way the Japanese say "3 o'clock". However, it can also refer to a terrible, horrible incident that makes one want to avert their eyes and break out the Brain Bleach. Veeeerry appropriate...
    • WHAT IS IT!? For the life of me, I cannot figure out what this 'incident' is supposed to be!
      • "Sanji" is a word used to describe something nasty and you don't want to remember it like he did to Kokoro. Seriously, it just means "horrible accident".
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He cooks with a pink panda decorated apron.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: A suit is his standard form of attire, usually only wearing more casual clothes during transitions between arcs.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Both TV English dubs dealt with this by either editing his cigarette out altogether (FUNimation), or by turning it into a lollipop (4Kids).
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: He has an underwater version of Sky Walk called "Blue Walk" and is said to be as fast as a fishman, which is pretty fast considering they're the third fastest swimmers in the sea.
  • Supreme Chef: Makes some of the best damn food you'll find on the Grand Line. And he joined the crew to fulfill his dream of finding some mysterious and awesome ingredients that can only be found in the All Blue, so he can cook even better.
  • Taken for Granite: Played for Laughs. After his two years in "Hell", he is so susceptible to women's looks that just LOOKING at Hancock does this to him. Shirahoshi as well.
  • Team Chef: It's a good idea to not insult his cooking skills. He'll beat you up for it. And probably suspend your eating privileges.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Sanji finally meets mermaids, and they like him. He's even able to resist nosebleeds for a while to play with them.
    • Similarly, Oda ocassionally decides to spare him and let him at least touch a woman, and on two seperate occasions he has had his face stuffed in into a girl's breasts. Nosebleeds ensue.
  • Training From Ironic Hell: Sanji has become so fast that he can now move at an absurdly fast speed UNDERWATER while maintaining his superior kicking power. He got the skill from running away from transvestites on that scary island for two full years.
    • He also gained the skill to run on air. So, yeah, he can fly.
  • Unusual Eyebrows
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He's not shy about insulting or arguing with the male Straw hats, especially Zoro, but he's also willing to go quite far in defending them despite claiming to only care for the women.
  • Volleying Insults: Quite often with Zoro, as well as his surrogate father Zeff.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: He refuses to harm women in any way, though he is capable of blocking their attacks. This causes near-fatal problems during the fights with Bon Clay and Califa. Nami even criticizes him on this trait.
    • Made 100 times worse as a side effect from the Training from Hell. For a time, even looking at a woman would cause him to faint.
      • After seeing Shirahoshi, he made a full recovery.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Again played for laughs when he learns about exactly where Luffy got sent to by Kuma.
    • On a more serious note, kicks Luffy and tells him to think before he speaks after he tells Usopp, in a fit of anger, to leave if he disagrees with his decision. Luffy apologizes, but it's too late.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: As a result of a "strict upbringing". See also Weaksauce Weakness above.
    • According to an SBS, it's not that Sanji won't hit a girl, it's that he can't hit a girl for some reason. Apparently it frustrates him.
      • Also deconstructed once, when a Genre Savvy female enemy used it against him so he wouldn't be able to help Robin.
    • Averted one time, when the crew first met Robin as a member of Baroque Works after Whiskey Peak. When they all drew weapons on her, he held her up with a pistol. Usopp even hung a lampshade on how out-of-character the act was; he reasoned she was a threat to Vivi.
    • In video game adaptations, he can be forced to fight against female enemies, and in some cases, he will apologize with each attack.

"Cotton Candy Lover" Tony Tony Chopper

"See...? Now I'm a real pirate!!"

Voiced by: Ikue Ohtani (JP), Kazue Ikura (JP, temporary), Lisa Ortiz (EN, 4Kids), Brina Palencia (EN, Funi)

Tony Tony Chopper serves as the ship's doctor. He's a reindeer who was cast out of his herd for having a blue nose, later compounded by eating the Human-Human Fruit (Hito Hito no Mi) and being feared by the people of Drum Island as a monster. Although he initially mistrusted humans, after having met and joined the Straw Hats, he has become very curious about the world and is eager to please.

Although he doesn't normally look that way in his default form, he's not exactly a wimp when it comes to fighting. In his most humanlike form, he's quite tall and very strong. He has certain combat advantages in each of his three regular forms, and has developed a drug called the Rumble Ball to unlock more, though it carries considerable risk. In terms of personality, he's a bit naive and gullible, occasionally experiences bouts of paranoia (especially early on as he learns to trust humans), and gets combative when praise is heaped on him (though his body language usually betrays more positive feelings).

His dream is to become a doctor capable of curing all disease, due to his accidentally hastening the death of his already sickly father-figure, Dr. Hiruluk. He has also resolved to prove himself as a man worthy of being a pirate, which sometimes seems at odds with his child-like behavior and gullible personality.

His bounty is 100 Berries.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: A send-up of Rudolph.
  • Artistic License Biology: The incident where Chopper's left antler got cut off was six years prior to his introduction. Surely he would've grown several new sets by now, right?
  • Badass Adorable
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Except for when he's Chopperman.
  • Berserk Button: First, do not call yourself a "Doctor" and hurt people like Hogback does. Second, Do Not turn innocent children into drug addicts and call it for their own good.
    • He's not a tanuki! Or a gorilla! (Heavy Point) Or a beetle! (post-time-skip Horn Point)
  • Bishounen Line: His Horn Point form looks notably more human after the time-skip. (But Usopp called him a beetle due to the horns.)
  • Breakout Character: Chopper ended up becoming the series' mascot, with most of the series' merchandise being Chopper related and even getting his own Spinoff.
  • Broken Pedestal: Dr. Hogback. He was unwilling to admit that he was connected to Moria, but declared he was no longer worthy of being called a doctor after learning this.
  • Cherry Blossoms: Just check out his introduction.
  • Cowardly Lion: Like Usopp, he can be a scaredy-cat at times. Once push comes into shove, however...
    • Not so much after the Time Skip, it seems. He's already faced down a particularly vicious Shark Fishman without losing his confident grin for a second.
    • Luffy raising the fear level to one of the four emperors was too much even for the new Chopper.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Being a Ridiculously Cute Critter, naturally he's voiced by women.
  • Cry Cute: Being a bit of a scaredy-cat, and very, very cute, he does this a lot.
    • He seems to have to gotten over this Post-Time Skip.
  • Cute Bruiser: Oh so much!
  • Deadly Doctor: Developed a drug specifically to be used for battle, albeit only on himself.
  • Deadly Upgrade: The Rumble Balls give him access to four extra forms (in addition to his default three) for a period of three minutes. If he takes two within six hours, he loses control of his transformations. If he takes three, he ends up in "Monster Point", an uncontrollable beast who is a danger to his comrades and himself.
    • He can now control Monster Point for a few minutes but is still drained for a two to three hours afterward.
  • Eat the Dog: Sanji jokes about him being their emergency rations.
  • Enemy Scan: Brain Point gives him the power to scan for his enemy's weak points. He doesn't use it much anymore.
  • Expy: Of Rudolph, natch.
  • Foreshadowing: A minor case at best, but the hat that he wears in the 10th movie is what he eventually wears after the Time Skip.
  • Genius Ditz: He's a doctor and really knows his craft, but he may be even more excitable than Luffy (he believes Usopp's tall tales, for one). He also didn't seem to be able to know the Fake!Strawhats were fake right away.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Initially Inverted, as he wore shorts but usually not shirts. He wore a jacket in Enies Lobby, but no shirt under. Averted since the time skip, since he now wears an A-shirt.
  • Honor Before Reason: When Gedatsu drowned one of his enforcers with his swamp cloud attack, Chopper felt duty-bound as a doctor to save him. This did involve going into "Heavy Point" and beating on his chest.
  • Hour of Power: Actually three minutes of power, but that's all the time he needs to kick somebody's ass with his Rumble Ball.
  • I Am Not Weasel: People often mistake him for a tanuki, a raccoon, or a gorilla.
    • This has followed him through the Time Skip as well. His new Horn Point form makes Luffy think he's a stagbeetle, much to Chopper's irritation.
  • Intellectual Animal: At age 17, the Doogie Howser, M.D. of intellectual animals.
  • Jerkass Facade: When he receives mushy praise, he responds with mild insults, though usually while waving his arms cutely or doing a happy dance.
    • At the beginning of episode 128, the royal doctor of Arabasta hung a lampshade on it when he "translated" Chopper's insults as gratitude.
    • He likely picked this up from Dr. Kureha, who never openly complimented his growing skill as a doctor, and literally chased him off with her stash of ornamental weaponry when he left, but obviously respected his skill and cared about him (and still does -- after he left, she referred to him as "my stupid son").
  • Lightning Bruiser: His Kung Fu Point.
  • The Medic: His role in the crew as doctor.
  • Mighty Glacier: His Heavy Point, Arm Point and Monster Point forms.
  • My Greatest Failure: When his mentor/father figure Dr. Hiriluk fell ill, Chopper tried to nurse him back to health. He only succeeded in getting him killed.
    • Possibly Subverted: Apparently, Dr. Hiriluk knew the mushroom was poisonous, but used it anyway to hasten his death, as he had a terminal illness, in addition to making his adoptive "son" feel good about himself. Then he blew himself up at Wapol's castle before the mushroom could kill him.
  • Never Bareheaded: He always wears his pink hat.
    • Post-time skip, he is always wearing his new cap. Even in Monster Point form.
  • Nice Hat: Given to him by Dr. Hiriluk. Best not to ask how he managed to get it on there.
    • Or how he puts it on, as several times he's been seen without it, and later with it on.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter
  • Running Gag: Chopper's complete inability to hide behind corners. He hides backwards so only his head is hidden and the rest of his body is exposed.
    • When somebody gets injured, Chopper has a tendency to call for a doctor, only for someone nearby to remind him that he's the doctor.
    • See I Am Not Weasel above.
  • Screaming Warrior: He hollers and screams like Bruce Lee while in Kung Fu Point.
  • So Last Season: While his Rumble Ball transformations are fairly versatile, they've been getting noticeably less and less effective as the series has worn on. It got an upgrade, so he has fresh, new transformations now.
    • It seems that all of his original forms have become stronger. Even better, he doesn't even need the Rumble Ball for most of them anymore.
  • Species Surname: The "surname" portion of his full name, "Tony Tony", comes from "tonakai", the Japanese for "reindeer".
  • Super-Deformed: A result of his Art Evolution.
  • Super Drowning Skills: He likes to jump in the water to save Luffy, forgetting that he can't swim either.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: Brought on by using three Rumble Ball transformations in a short period of time.
    • Though it's not so much "evil" as it is an uncontrollable monster that attacks everybody.
    • After the timeskip he can control it, albeit only for three minutes.
  • Talking Animal: His Devil Fruit gives him the intelligence and abilities of a person. Maybe even moreso, considering he was an experienced doctor at age 15.
  • Tap on the Head: When he was with Dr. Kureha, she had him give patients concussions as a form of anesthetic.
  • Team Pet: What the Marines assume him to be, hence his ridiculously low bounty of 50 Berries. He'd probably have a much higher one if they took him seriously.
  • Token Non-Human
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Chopper's primary fighting style relies on his hybridization and augmentation of human and reindeer parts.
    • After the Time Skip, he no longer needs the rumble ball for six of his transformations.


"Demon Child" Nico Robin

Adventurer Archaeologist, ex-Dragon, and Ms. Exposition, Nico Robin is one of the darker and more enigmatic members of the Straw Hats. Entering the story as the partner of Big Bad Sir Crocodile, Robin asked to join the crew because Luffy had forced her to live, rather than die. Despite some initial mistrust, she gradually settled into the crew. Since those early uncertain days, she's become something of the crew's Team Mom, and occasionally plays the role of Cool Big Sis for Nami. Her Devil Fruit, the Flower-Flower Fruit (Hana Hana no Mi), lets her sprout replicas of her limbs, and later her entire body, from any surface. She is thirty years old.

Unfortunately, her past eventually caught up to her and it was revealed that she's been on the run from the World Government for twenty years, after her home island of Ohara was razed, and a large bounty was placed on her head. However, after the rest of the crew proved that they were willing to essentially declare war on the World Government in order to get her back, she realized that she had finally found her place in life, and that she was not a burden to her new friends.

Her dream is to learn the history of the Lost One Hundred Years, a passage of time blacked out by the World Government, which is said to be written in a lost language scribed onto huge stone cubes called Poneglyphs[1]. Simply learning the language of the Poneglyphs is a capital crime, and is the reason that everyone on her island, including her mother, were killed by the Marines. She is now one of only a handful of people in the world who can read them, allowing her to not only discover the true history of the world, but also to potentially revive a lost superweapon.

Her bounty is 130,000,000 Berries.

  • Absolute Cleavage: Depends on the outfit, but it shows up quite a bit.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Also skilled at assassination.
  • Affirmative Action Girl: Let's face it, that's what she is, even though she is much more developed and less blatant than usual.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She was treated as an outcast on Ohara after eating a Devil Fruit.
  • Anti-Villain --> Anti-Hero: Initially joined Baroque Works if for no other reason than to survive long enough to read a Poneglyph, and had no personal interest in power (Type II), until becoming an Anti-Hero Type IV. She (along with Zoro) are the most vicious and brutal of all the Straw-Hats, breaking spines, going for the groin, and using sneak attacks.
  • Badass
  • Bare Your Midriff: Happens on and off through the series.
  • Berserk Button: Don't bring up her nickname or speak of Ohara unless you want a beatdown. Also, don't destroy historical artifacts in front of her, or she will REALLY make you regret it.
  • Blood Is Squicker in Water: A Running Gag is her casually pointing this out whenever possible.
  • Blue Eyes: In the anime.
  • Bond Breaker: Her leaving with the CP9 really soured things for the Straw Hats.
  • Broken Bird: Thanks to being pegged for death due to a Government Conspiracy, it wasn't until the Straw Hats came to save her from Enies Lobby that she realized that she had finally found her place.
  • Brown Eyes: In the manga and Strong World.
  • The Chessmaster
  • Cool Shades: Part of her post timeskip attire. Usually wears it over her head, but she was recently seen wearing it during the fight in Fishman Island.
  • Creepy Good: Robin is one of only two members of the Strawhats to have killed in the past (she used to be an assassin and The Dragon). She is the only member who still uses her powers to kill, and frequently makes morbid comments about death. Her power to grow body parts from any surface also adds to her creep factor.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Miniskirt, specifically.
  • Dark Action Girl: Her powers enable her to break your back or neck with very little effort, even if you beg or cry for mercy.
  • Distress Ball: Slammed with this one. A full fifth of the series is spent on a storyline involving the Straw Hats trying to save her from a life of imprisonment and inevitable death at the hands of the World Government. And on the off-chance that that wasn't enough, Kuma blasts her to a frozen and inhospitable island where she's made a slave of the World Government anyway, and forced to work on the construction of a massive bridge. The poor woman just can't get a break.
    • At least the second time, she was saved by Revolutionaries more or less instantly and was not bound with Seastone, anyway, making her status as "distressed" questionable at best.
  • Doppelganger Attack: She can make full body copies of herself with her powers.
    • Chapter 643 seems to indicate that she can even switch places with them.
  • Enigmatic Minion: She played this role before her Heel Face Turn. In fact, as far back as her first appearance, she was often assisting the Straw Hats and Luffy in particular as they took on Crocodile. Crocodile himself was wary of her, which worked out in his favor.
  • Generation Xerox: She came from an island of archeologists, can even read the Poneglyphs, and looks exactly like her mother, with dark hair.
  • Genius Bruiser: Not exactly a bruiser in the sense that she punches and kicks, but she does use her powers to break grown men's spines in half and snap their necks (which, in case you didn't know, is an instant kill; Robin's probably murdered more people than Zoro), and then once the adventure is over she kicks back and studies her archeology books.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: Uses a gigantic variation after the Time Skip.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: When calling up her devil fruit powers, she does so in three different languages -- none of which are Japanese. "Fleur" is the French for flower petals. Before that, the number of appendages she wants to use in Spanish. After, the act she is performing in English.
  • Groin Attack: "Dos Fleur... Grab!" Poor, poor Franky.

  • Guile Hero: Doesn't show often, but it's true. It's too bad on the occasions it does show, it's against pretty good Chessmasters.
  • Heel Face Turn / Reverse Mole: Started out as the Dragon before she outlived her usefulness.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted by the Strawhats’ equally heroic rescue mission, a heartbreaking flashback and following heartwarming ”I want to live!” cry.
  • Heroic Willpower: Having her shadow ripped out took about 15 minutes, tops, for her to get back on her feet. To put this in perspective, the average person would be incapacitated for three days.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: Post-timeskip.
  • Interrupted Suicide: After her hopes of finding the Rio Poneglyph were crushed in Alabasta, she decides to stay inside the crumbling Royal Tomb. She is wounded, but considering her powers she could have escaped if she had wanted so. The Unwanted Rescue comes in form of Luffy. It takes some time and the Power of Friendship, but this becomes Happily-Failed Suicide.

  • Large Ham: It turns out that Robin is the biggest overactor of the crew. Subversion in that she only does this for musicals.
    • Justified: she thought it was supposed to be an opera. Normally she is quite serious.
  • Magic Pants: Begins making use of this when she gains the ability to create full-body clones, as she also develops the ability to create outfits out of nowhere to clothe them with. Notable in that she blatantly avoided this trope up until this point(and actually still does, the full-body clones being the only application of her powers that have any clothes).
  • Me's a Crowd: She has recently become able to create complete duplicates of herself.
  • Minored in Asskicking
  • Missing Mom: Her mother Olivia was away trying to research the Lost One Hundred Years, and the two didn't see each other until Ohara's destruction.
  • Ms. Exposition: As the resident Badass Bookworm of the Straw Hats crew, she's often the one explaining the world of One Piece for Luffy's and consequently the audience's benefit.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Oh yeah. Wears somewhat fetishistic outfits? Check. A tendency to end up bound (if not gagged)? Check. Sporting Absolute Cleavage on a frigid island in the middle of a blizzard? Check. In all fairness, that last one wasn't really her fault or intentional.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Her most common use of her Devil Fruit power is sprouting arms on her opponent(s) and putting them in submission holds.
  • Nerves of Steel
  • Nice Hat: As Miss All Sunday, she always wore a white cowboy hat. She still occasionally does, or sometimes a purple one.
  • The Nicknamer: Robin rarely address her crewmates by name, any name, she's very fond of Hey, You; when she does go by name, it will be a simple nickname like Long-nose-kun (Ussop), Bushido-san (Zoro), Cook-san (Sanji) & etc. The only crewmate she will always call by name is Luffy, the captain himself, and this was after she found her place with the Straw Hats, before that she addressed him as Straw Hat, like all his foes.
    • Considering her past, this is her defense mechanism. It prevent her to be attached to people. In Enies Lobby event however she found herself a Nakama that is willing to travel with her despite all the burden she carries, and from there on she is willing to call the Strawhats by name, starting with Luffy.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Possibly the only one besides Luffy who can find a monstrous, three-headed, decaying zombie dog cute.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: In times when members of the crew have befallen an uncertain fate, she usually suggests that they suffered the most gruesome demise possible, or otherwise points out macabre points of trivia.
  • Perky Goth: She sort of has a taste for the macabre. To name a few examples, she suggested "Being of Darkness" as a name for the Thousand Sunny and even called the Cerberus on Thriller Bark "cute".
  • Petal Power: For some reason, pink flower petals appear whenever she uses her DF powers.
    • This is explained from her DF's name: Flower-Flower. The limbs sprout from the ground "like flowers". I don't suggest thinking about that too closely.
  • She's Got Legs
  • Shiny Midnight Black: Her hair, black with blue highlights.
  • Shout-Out: Her look after the timeskip may remind people of another Adventurer Archaeologist.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's 6'2 (6 feet and 2 inches tall), dwarfing all of the other Strawhats except Franky and Brook, who keep in mind are themselves 7'5 and 8'8, respectively. This is not a very impressive height in the One Piece world (see the Our Giants Are Bigger trope for a full diagnostic on height variations in the One Piece world), but would be huge if she were a real life woman.
  • The Stoic: Like Zoro, she is much more reserved than most of the crew, and unlike the others, has not had a single Face Fault -- this is lampshaded in one of the anime's ending themes.
    • Perhaps not the same ending theme, but one involves shots of each of the crew looking normally, before switching over to a crazy expression, with two exceptions; Zoro, who simply falls asleep, and Robin, who goes from reading books to... reading more books.
    • Not So Stoic: Enies Lobby. That's all.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The only difference between Robin and her mother is that the former isn't a White-Haired Pretty Girl.
  • Super Drowning Skills: As a Devil Fruit user, she is affected by this, though the only times she's ever been in danger of this was during the seventh movie and the climax of the Enies Lobby arc.
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: Robin is this trope; she's the third tallest member of the crew (6'2"), has long flowing dark locks, is widely considered to be the most attractive member of the crew, and has an austere and sophisticated personality.
    • Heck, she won a poll run by the One Piece Wiki for the single most attractive woman in the setting, beating out Hancock and Shirahoshi, who canonically hold that title.
  • Team Mom: Word of God described her as being like this.
  • Tempting Fate: Her somewhat macabre sense of humor often unnerves her companions.
  • There's a Wrestler in All of Us: Robin specializes in submission locks and her most common form of attack is taking down an enemy from a distance in this manner using her powers. After the Time Skip, she even takes it up a notch and one of her moves involves making a clone of herself to take down the legs in a submission hold while she herself performs a diving-neck snap. On a Fishman twice her size. A Fishman who, like all Fishmen, is said to naturally be 10 times stronger than the average human. Damn.

  • Weak but Skilled: Robin is no stronger than your average athletic human woman. However, skillful use of her Devil Fruit powers enables her to take on foes much bigger and/or much more powerful than she is.


"Cyborg" Franky

Franky, real name Cutty Flam, is the crew's shipwright. His eccentric behavior (SUUUPPERRR!!) and habit of wearing speedos lead many to brand him a pervert (which he takes pride in), yet he is loyal and protective of his friends, often calling them his "little bros". He's also prone to striking poses and breaking out into torrents of Manly Tears at the slightest provocation. Initially, he was the leader of the Franky Family, a gang of villainous dismantlers who provoked the Straw Hats' wrath by mugging Usopp and stealing most of their money. As his epithet implies, he is a cyborg known as BF-36 (BF = Battle Franky) due to being hit by a sea train and washing up on a scrap yard and using said scrap to modify his body to keep from dying. He later uses blueprints from the worlds best scientist to upgrade himself to BF-37.

His past is tied to Nico Robin's, as while she can read the location of the superweapon Pluton, he actually owns the blueprints themselves, having been passed down among the shipwrights of Water 7 for generations. After being captured by the World Government along with Robin, he burned the blueprints and fought alongside the rest of the Straw Hats to save her, and eventually joined them after being blackmailed through theft of his speedos.

His dream is to build and sail on what he deems the greatest sailing ship on the seas, which resulted in the construction of the Straw Hats' new ship, the Thousand Sunny.

His bounty is 94,000,000 Berries.

"Humming"/"Soul King" Brook

"I really am glad to still be alive!"

Voiced by: Yuichi Nagashima (AKA: "Cho") (JP), Ian Sinclair (EN, Funi)

Brook is the crew's musician. He ate the Revive-Revive Fruit (Yomi Yomi no Mi), which enabled his spirit to reanimate his corpse after he died. (Un)fortunately, after his death, his spirit got lost for an entire year before finding his body, and it had decayed into a skeleton. He later developed the ability to control his own soul. Deprived of his shadow by the Warlord of the Sea, Gecko Moria, he was adrift within the gloomy Florian Triangle until he met the Straw Hats by chance. He's something of a Dirty Old Man who repeatedly asks Nami and Robin to show him their panties, and he also has the distinct habit of making cringe-inducing puns relating to his skeletal state at every opportunity. He's ninety years old, though he doesn't age after dying at the age of thirty-eight. He is also a fencer who executes extremely fast attacks and can uses music as a form of hypnosis.

His dream is to reunite with Laboon, a whale who lives at the entrance to the Grand Line, whom the Straw Hats had previously met. Fifty years ago, the baby whale had befriended the pirate crew Brook was a part of, but they had to leave him behind as their travels became more dangerous. After his shadow was recovered from Gecko Moria, Brook happily accepted Luffy's invite to join the crew, pleased to have finally found new friends to call his own.

His bounty is 83,000,000 Berries.

  • Afro Asskicker
  • The Aloner: It's implied that Brook developed his bizarre humor and Incredibly Lame Pun tendencies as a means to entertain himself while he was stuck alone on a ship full of (inanimate) dead people for half a century.
  • Astral Projection: A power he developed over the Time Skip.
  • Back from the Dead: The Devil Fruit he ate let him come back to life after being killed. Once. Though he's harder to kill a second time.
  • Badass Grandpa: He's 90 years old.
  • Berserk Button: Don't belittle the pain and emptiness of death. He lost everything to it, and he can't stand people just simply throwing their lives away.
    • Don't dare attack his crew. "I already lost a crew once. You won't make me lose another!"
    • He can't stand throwing away the lives of others either, as exemplified by his response to Zeo in Chapter 645 when the New Fishman Pirates commanders begin killing off their soldiers:

Zeo: Those who choose not to die in battle will die here, by my own hands! Your deaths shall be left as our grudge towards humans!!
 Brook: Stop right there! Those are your men!! And you, what would you know?! It's not like you've died before! Die and be left as a grudge!!? That's absurd! Nothing is left behind! After death, living things are all just bones!!

  • Beware the Silly Ones
  • Blessed with Suck: His Devil Fruit only returns someone from the dead once, and his skeletal body doesn't seem to offer much additional resistance against damage and pain (if anything, it's arguably worse in this regard). So, basically, all he's got is Super Drowning Skills. Still, it's not all bad; he moves faster and is much lighter due to having no flesh.
    • Also, he can instantly heal himself by drinking milk. Yeah, right.
      • Partly subverted, as he shows that he's not 100% recovered after making the above claim.
    • His Super Drowning Skills are partially balanced by his ability to dash across water because he's so light. He can also jump extraordinarily far and high. Yes, even becoming a skeleton who can't swim can be turned into an advantage in this series.
      • Plus, he doesn't really suffer the same effect of internal damage as the rest of the crew. Stabbing him in the eye just chips his skull, stabbing in the ribs notches them, and a blow to the gut does nothing unless it hits his spine. All three happen within what is probably no more than thirty seconds in universe during his fight to retrieve his shadow.
    • After the Time Skip, he's learned how to remove his soul from his body. Both the women's baths and getting messages to people when he's locked up are now within his reach.
      • The Time Skip further reveals that there's an inexhaustible energy that allows his soul to continue living in the world. Depending on additional revelations in the future about what this means, his power may well border Cursed with Awesome.
  • Catch Phrase: "Excuse me Miss, may I see your panties?"
    • "SKULL JOKE!!!"
    • Includes variants such as "may I borrow some money?" should panties be unavailable.

  • Go Mad From the Isolation: You can see some slippage during his fifty year isolation, with things such as hallucinations of his crew alive and well again.

  • An Ice Person: One of his new abilities is freezing things with his sword, by channeling the chills of The Underworld.

  • Immortal Immaturity: Brook has a serious side, but is very quick to join in on the unnecessary playfulness that the younger members make. He claims to just love having fun.
  • Incredibly Lame Pun: They are his favotite types of jokes -- they really bust his gut. But... WAIT! HE DOESN'T HAVE A GUT!!! YOHOHOOOOOOO!!!! SKULL JOKE!!!
  • Insane Equals Violent: Greatly subverted. As described by some of the other tropes listed, Brook is not entirely well. As described by still other tropes, he is also the least likely to even act like a jerk, let alone be particularly violent as pirates go.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Brook is old enough to be Franky’s grandfather or Luffy’s greatgrandfather!
  • It Runs on Nonsensoleum: His entire existence.
    • Acording to the Other Wiki, his Devil Fruit allows him to function like a normal human despite not having the necessary organs to do so.
    • He's finally given an explanation. It's not organs, or muscles, it's his soul!
  • Let's Get Dangerous: For all his antics, Brook did manage to amass a large bounty while he was still alive, and can hold his own on a fight, though he's not as badass as Zoro is in swordsmanship.
  • Nice Hat: A top hat... that somehow can sit on his afro without falling off.
    • Replaced by a big gold crown two years later. It's like his hair is some kind of hat adhesive.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Yes, yes, yes, and no. Brook isn't a robot. That's Franky.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: He'll try to prevent enemy combatants from contact with his hair at any cost. This is because being a skeleton, he considers it his only visible trait still the same from when he was still alive, and it won't grow back if it gets cut off again(and considering his sole purpose now is to meet up with Laboon again, he kinda needs Laboon to still be able to recognize him somehow). He protects it to such an extent that he loses his very first real fight in the series in order to avoid damage to his hair.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Brook is undoubtedly based on famous guitarist Saul "Slash" Hudson. The resemblance is more noticeable in his younger appearances. [dead link]
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Simultaneously played straight and subverted to humorous effect.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Due to the effect of his Devil Fruit. Even more so after the Time Skip.
  • The Pollyanna: "If we're going to die, we might as well enjoy it..."

  • Stealth Pun: (Combined with Punny Name and Fridge Brilliance) His becoming the Soul King, because (apart from his skeleton and his hair) that's the only part of him remaining after he came back to life. And after the Time Skip, his soul can become mobile at will.
  • Super Drowning Skills: As with all Devil Fruit users, he sinks like a stone in water. Though one would assume, since he has no organs, that this wouldn't be as inconvenient for him, his body still seems to act as if it has the organs even if they don't physically exist. Like Chopper, he also forgets he can't swim, but he can at least run on the surface of the water.
  • Undead: Of the Dem Bones variety.
  • Upper Class Twit: Not really upper class, it's just a facade that he puts on, but he would not be out of place in Blackadder.
    • Up for debate. His background implies he held the position of captain of an unnamed kingdom's army before becoming a pirate, so it's equally possible that he was upper class first and the twit part developed from being The Aloner.
      • Hey, if he wasn't before, "Soul King" definitely is.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He's a living skeleton with creepy (and downright horrific) abilities. Yet his voice is amazingly soft, calm and musical. In fact, most of time he sounds as if he were about to burst into a good, healthy laughter anytime.
  • Walking on Water: Due to his light frame, he can dash across the ocean's surface for a short time. How long is only limited by endurance.
  • Weapon of Choice
    • Magic Music: He has used violin chords to put people to sleep.
      • Post-Time Skip, he can use music to hypnotize people into seeing illusions, such as a festival.
    • Sword Cane: His primary weapon.
      • During the timeskip, the longarms sharpened the blade and it was given the name Soul Solid.
  • You Are Already Dead: His signature attack, Hanauta Sancho: Yahazu Giri, involves slicing his opponent once at incomprehendible speeds (literally -- unlike with Ken's attacks, the audience literally never even sees Brook do so much as Flash Step in this attack), and then slowly walks away. After 3 steps, Brook sheathes his sword... followed by his confused opponent then suffering what's usually a fatality.
  • Your Size May Vary: Brook is ridiculously tall, but sometimes sloppy animators forget this fact while others exaggerate it. In other words, his height depends on the art director of an episode.
