One Piece/Characters/The Seven Warlords of the Sea

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

How to describe these nut jobs? The Seven Warlords (Shichibukai) are former pirates who allied themselves with the World Government in exchange for their bounties being rescinded and a large degree of autonomy in their dealings. Along with the Four Emperors and Marines, they are one of the Three Superpowers that define the current era. Oh, and they all hate each other.

Dracule "Hawk-Eye" Mihawk

"There's no strength in swordplay based on force."

Voiced by: Takeshi Aono (JP), Hirohiko Kakegawa (JP, episode 461+), Andrew Paull (EN, 4Kids), John Gremillion (EN, Funi)

The first of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced, his appearance marking their very first mention in fact, Mihawk carries the reputation of the greatest swordsman in the world. Unlike practically every other Pirate and even the other Warlords, he is a loner, sailing the seas in a small boat and never interacting with others unless absolutely necessary. He is said to have had a rivalry with Shanks in the past, and that their duels were truly titanic. It is Zoro's ultimate goal to defeat him and Mihawk, after seeing his warrior spirit, urged Zoro to become stronger and surpass him one day.

  • Animal Motifs: The hawk, having sharp, narrow eyes, similar to those of a hawk and even nicknamed "Hawk-Eye".
  • Badass: Being one of the Seven Warlords automatically qualifies you. Scaring the hell out of Shanks' crew just by showing up out of the blue, and being the only person to soundly curb stomp Zoro after deliberately handicapping yourself, gets you a lifetime membership with benefits.

"You wouldn't kill a fly with a cannon, would you?"
"I can't be bothered to remember the name of every worm I cross paths with."

    • Badass Normal: He's the only Warlord without a Devil Fruit power or some kind of racial bonus. Despite that, he may very well be the most dangerous of them all.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Not as impressive as Crocodile, but just look at the picture! If the whole Warlord of the Sea thing doesn't work out, he could always go look for work in the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Blood Knight: Has traits of this, though he only enjoys fighting strong opponents and rarely shows said enjoyment on the outside.
  • Broken Ace: Seems to be rather disillusioned with the world after becoming the greatest swordsman.
  • But for Me It Was Tuesday: When two prisoners from Impel Down asked if he remembered them while they started to attack, his response was, "I don't remember the name of every insect I crush."
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He hunted Don Krieg's fleet across the Grand Line and utterly destroyed it because... they woke him up from his nap.
  • Eyes of Gold: In the anime, his eyes are colored yellow to reinforce the Animal Motif Theme Naming. All but the most Badass of fighters start quaking in their boots looking directly at them.
    • Super Vision: There's a reason he's called "Hawk-Eye" (excluding the above); not even Luffy in Second Gear could move fast enough for Mihawk to lose track of him.
  • Famed in Story: His duels with Shanks are reputed to have shaken the Grand Line. The fact that Whitebeard of all people said they were still ringing in his ears is the icing on the cake.
  • Friendly Enemy: To the Straw Hat crew, after a fashion. Specifically, he keeps tabs on Luffy's and Zoro's growth as pirates, boasts that Luffy's goal of becoming Pirate King is more dangerous than surpassing Mihawk himself (which is Zoro's dream), gives a mental apology to Shanks before fighting Luffy at Marineford, and agrees to train Zoro during the Time Skip for the sake of Zoro being better able to protect his Nakama.
  • Hilarity Ensues: Mihawk coming back to his creepy castle and finding out that Perona and Zoro had taken up residence while he was away.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Deliberately invoked: He decided it was more beneficial to spend a few years training Zoro, who has stated that his only real goal in life is to defeat Mihawk, rather than wait around for possibly decades before he could get a good match out of him.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Not exactly "die", but he seems slightly bitter about the fact that Shanks lost his arm.
  • I Need You Stronger: Invokes this trope practically word-for-word after he meets Zoro.

"It's still too early for you to die. My name is Dracule Mihawk! Discover your true self, the true world, become stronger! However long it may take, I shall await you at the top. Surpass this sword! Surpass me! Roronoa Zoro!!!"

  • Internet Backlash: Let's just say that going onto a forum and naming either Mihawk or Shanks as the stronger of the two is a bad idea.
  • I Shall Taunt You: When Zoro challenged him in East Blue, Mihawk apologized that he didn't have anything smaller than his four-inch dagger.
  • It Amused Me: Mihawk's stated reason for hunting the remainder of Krieg's fleet from the Grand Line all the way to East Blue and utterly destroying it?

"To kill time."

  • Knight of Cerebus: No enemy prior to his introduction and for quite a while afterwards posed as much of a threat to Luffy and the others as Mihawk did during the few brief chapters he appeared in.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Just look at the picture!
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Like everyone else on this page.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He's visually based on real pirate Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts, who also lived in a hard-to-reach creepy castle.
  • Older Than They Look: Would you believe he was 41 when he was first introduced?
  • One-Man Army: The man can cut ships in half with no effort, and does so for fun.
    • Charles Atlas Superpower: The anime has him jump several hundred feet into the air before trying to impale Luffy. Then there's that whole business with him chopping a mountain of ice in half!
    • Curb Stomp Battle: Almost every fight we've seen him in, and the only time on-screen someone was giving him a good fight he wasn't using any of the skills he displayed earlier.
    • Informed Ability: Despite a few brief (and admittedly impressive) showings of force, we've yet to see exactly why the man is/was considered an equal to the Emperor Shanks. But considering that their fights were said to actually shake the Grand Line...
      • Fridge Brilliance: Remember, in the War of Marineford, Mihawk is fighting on behalf of the World Government. As mentioned in Aloof Ally below, Mihawk is known for being even less cooperative with the World Government than the other Warlords, who themselves have approximately zero loyalty to the WG. So of course he's not going to be putting much effort into helping them.
    • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: His first fight against Zoro.
    • Person of Mass Destruction: Well when you can single-handedly sink an entire fleet of ships...
    • The Worf Effect: During the Marineford arc, Mihawk makes Luffy look like an amateur. In the anime, Mihawk defeats Jimbei, who had interrupted his schooling of Luffy, in one blow.
  • Red Baron: Probably the most notable example apart from Whitebeard.
  • The Rival: To Shanks. This changed after Shanks lost his arm, however. He seems to see Zoro as having the potential to someday become his new rival, and in fact appears to be actively rooting for this to happen.
    • Forget "actively rooting". He decided to make Zoro into his Rival by training him specifically for the job.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Hm... let's see:
    • Has a sword with a heavily ornate, cross-shaped design.
    • Sails around in a coffin-shaped boat with black sails and eerie green-flamed candles.
    • Lives in a creepy Gothic castle on a creepy, perpetually-twilight island.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The moment Shanks shows up at Marineford, Mihawk puts his sword away, says fighting Shanks wasn't part of the deal, and makes his exit.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Became one to Zoro. We were as surprised as you.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: Subverted. His debut marked the first mention of the Seven Warlords, but he may be the most powerful of them (if his former rivalry with one of the Four Emperors is any indication).
  • Spell My Name with an "S": There's some minor contention on whether his first name is "Dracule" or some variation of "Juraquille", though the former is the spelling almost universally accepted by the western world.
    • Ultimately resolved with the release of the One Piece Databook Green. It's "Dracule".
  • The Stoic: One of the most serious characters in the One Piece world, you'll hardly even see this man smile, let alone raise his voice.
    • Aloof Ally: To the Marines. Granted, the Warlords aren't exactly known for keeping up their end of the agreement, but it's particularly telling that both the Marines and the Warlords themselves are visibly surprised when Mihawk actually starts to fight.
    • Calling Your Attacks: Averted. Mihawk doesn't so much as grunt when he attacks, regardless of who he's attacking or how.
    • Not So Stoic: He recently burst out laughing (and it was with the stereotypical "Mwahahaha!") when Zoro begged him to become his disciple.
    • Red Oni, Blue Oni: His blue to Shanks' red.
    • The Comically Serious: In the anime, after Luffy defeats Arlong and earns his first bounty, Mihawk visits Shanks to deliver the news. A joyous Shanks decides to start partying (again, despite being hung over from partying the night before) and offers Mihawk a drink. Mihawk keeps that eternally serious look on his face... and chugs the whole thing in one go.
  • Victory Is Boring: Certainly gives this impression. His constant search for a rival, combined with the fact that he's known to attack entire fleets over something as trivial as disturbing his nap, seems to be his way of alleviating boredom.
  • Wine Is Classy: When not out slaughtering pirates, he can be seen relaxing in his mansion with a book and a glass of red wine.
  • World's Strongest Swordsman: The best swordsman in the world, and it shows.
    • BFS: His famed Kokutou Yoru is pretty fucking big.
    • Cherry Tapping: Uses a knife to fight Zoro, and easily overpowers him.
    • Implausible Fencing Powers: Effortlessly holds off Zoro's three swords with a knife, deflects bullets with his sword, and slices though a ship the size of an office building with just one swing. Without making physical contact with the ship. Then there's this. There's a reason people (in-universe) call it "the World's Strongest Slash".
    • Knife Nut: Though not to the same extent that the trope is typically applied.
    • Master Swordsman: ... duh.
    • Razor Wind / Sword Beam: Bonus points for being the same eerie green as the candles on his boat.
  • Worthy Opponent: Originally with Shanks, but after Shanks lost his arm Mihawk no longer considered him as such. Once he met Zoro he started hoping the latter would fill the role, after he does some major level grinding at least.

Donquixote Doflamingo

"The time is almost here. Go and lay the groundwork. A world where only true pirates can survive will soon be upon us. Those without power, flee while you can. The tide will bring those of unmatched power and the New Era will begin!"

Voiced by: Hideyuki Tanaka (JP), Robert McCollum (EN, Funi)

The third of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced, Doflamingo used to boast the highest known bounty yet revealed in the series at 340 million berries until Luffy's new 400 million bounty was revealed. Sly and rude and disrespectful towards the World Government, Doflamingo is sadistically playful with others, and seems to delight in causing and participating in chaos. He is the head of a massive slaver ring that caters towards the Celestial Dragon nobility, and he is a believer in the New Age, an era where pirates focus on what's around them rather than embark on pursuits of romanticism, making him the anti-thesis of the Great Age of Pirates that Gold Roger set in motion.

His former bounty was 340,000,000 Berries.

  • Animal Motifs: The flamingo, wearing pink, flamboyant clothes and walking like a flamingo.
  • Ambiguously Gay: The way he dresses, the way he acts, and the way he hits on Crocodile. May be a Depraved Homosexual if so.
  • Blond Guys Are Evil: Well, that shouldn't be your only clue...
  • Dark-Skinned Blond: In the anime. In the manga he's as pale as everyone else.
  • The Dragon: Seems to be one for the Five Elder Stars.
  • Flat Earth Atheist: In a world that practically runs on the power of dreams and love of adventure, Doflamingo is the main proponent of an objectivist movement.
  • Foe Yay: What better setting than right in the middle of a giant climactic war when hitting on Crocodile?
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wore goggles in addition to his sunglasses when he was younger for some reason.
  • The Hyena: It is very rare to see him not laughing, and even rarer to see him without a smile.
  • Just Between You and Me: He seems very fond of sharing his beliefs or relevant information with opponents.
  • Kick the Dog: Forced Atmos to murder his own crewmates, with Doflamingo cackling all the way.
  • Laughably Evil: Evil alright, but at least it's fun to watch him.
  • Meaningful Name: His namesake, Don Quixote, is an iconic dreamer, in stark contrast to Doflamingo's insistence that dreams are just that, dreams. Ironically, he does share one connection to Don Quixote. Neither of them realize that their beliefs are merely a product of their own insanity.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Apparently based on French singer Michel Polnareff.
  • People Puppets: He has the power to take control of people, and manipulate their movements while making hand gestures as if controlling a marionette's strings. Whether this is the result of a Devil Fruit or not is unknown.
  • Psychotic Smirk: What an unnerving smirk he has.
  • Psycho for Hire: He's the less sane member of the Warlords.
  • Razor Floss: Appears to be a second part of his powers, as he managed to cleanly slice off an uber-giant's leg during the battle with the Whitebeard Pirates without using a weapon.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His oversized, feathery, and very pink overcoat. His tropical-styled shirt might count too. He probably wouldn't look out of place in Miami Vice if he ditched the jacket.
  • Sinister Shades: The shades themselves are even shaped sinisterly.
  • Silly Walk: Walks with a bowl-legged waddle in his first appearance.
  • Slasher Smile: More like Slasher Sneer, or Slasher Smirk.
  • Social Darwinist: During the battle of Marineford, he delivers one particularly Badass Hannibal Lecture about how Might Makes Right.

Doflamingo: "Pirates are evil!? The Marines are righteous?! Ha! These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war will always grow up with different values! Therefore, those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! Justice will prevail, you say!? Damn right it will! And that's because whoever wins this war becomes justice!"

Bartholomew "Tyrant" Kuma

"We have no obligation to cooperate with the Marines save where the government is directly involved."

Voiced by: Hideyuki Hori (JP)

The fourth of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be formally introduced. Kuma is a very large man who is always seen carrying a bible. He has a reputation for being an incredibly ruthless pirate who crushed anyone to stand in his way, yet his quiet, calm demeanor and his (in hindsight) merciful actions fly in the face of that. He is also known for following the World Government's orders to the letter, unlike the other Warlords. Yet he also seems to follow the code of Moral Justice, rather than the seemingly more prevalent Absolute Justice, and unlike many other characters, seems to have an idea of what goes on behind the scenes.

He also ate the Paw-Paw Fruit (Nikyu Nikyu no Mi) and is the prototype for the Pacifista project known as PX-0. It also turns out that he is a member of the Revolutionary Army.

His former bounty was 296,000,000 Beri.

  • Animal Motifs: The bear, appearing to be frightening and extremely large, and having a Devil Fruit that gives him bear paws. He's also nicer then the rest of the other members.
  • Badass
  • Breath Weapon: His cybernetic modifications allow him to fire a laser beam from his mouth.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: It's stated by Donquixote Doflamingo that they slowly replaced his limbs and body from the legs up, and guess what? His head and brain are gone now as well. "Tyrant Kuma" is dead.
  • Enigmatic Minion: He's known for following the World Government's orders more than the other Warlords, but it's clear that there's more to him than meets the eye.
  • Everything's Worse with Bears: Played pretty straight the first time.
    • Subverted later, as he actually saved the Straw Hats' lives on Sabaody, even if they didn't realize it.
    • Played straight with his cyborg copies, even if they don't have his Devil Fruit power.
  • Hollywood Cyborg: He's a Pacifista prototype human weapon.
  • La Résistance: Kuma was a member before his piracy days.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice
  • The Mole: He turns out to be a member of the Revolutionary Army. He is no longer The Mole after he was turned into a full cyborg with no free will of his own.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: The Straw Hats learned this the hard way.
  • Nice Hat: A tad understated, but the ears make it.
    • A flashback shows that Kuma once had a Nice Hood with ears on it.
  • One-Man Army: He was able to defeat the entire Straw Hat crew without even trying.
    • Implacable Man: He's Nigh Invulnerable after all. The Straw Hat Pirates were unable to touch nor hurt him, let alone stop.
    • Lightning Bruiser: He's big, but he's also among the fastest and strongest characters in the series.
    • Made of Diamond: Comes with being a Pacifista.
    • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Played with. Although the Straw Hats are unable to even touch him, he's able to use his powers to transport them out of harm's way without physically wounding them. The emotional damage, on the other hand...
  • Power Palms: His Devil Fruit gives him powerful paw pad palms.
    • Attack Reflector: Any attack that hits his paw pads will just bounce right off, regardless of how much power it has.
    • Hand Blast: His Pad Cannon which is a paw-shaped air bullet created by pushing the air at the speed of light.
    • Heart Is an Awesome Power: His Paw-Paw Fruit allows him to push anything, from air to pain itself, and he can teleport by pushing himself.
    • Megaton Punch: Basically what the powers of the Paw-Paw Fruit boil down to.
    • Nuke'Em: Ursus Shock.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: If a red light appears in one of his eye pieces, watch out.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The bible he carries and his clothes evoke the image of a Catholic priest.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Actually Scary Shiny Focusing Lenses, but the effect is the same.
  • The Stoic: Always composed and calm. Always.
  • What Could Have Been: He was originally going to have a steering wheel stuck in his head, but that idea was dropped from his design and given to Shiki instead.
  • The Worf Effect: A bit of a subversion since we're talking about the Pacifistas (cyborgs modeled after Kuma), but let's roll with it; Remember how a single Pacifista managed to smack the entire Straw Hat crew around like a bunch of ragdolls? 2 year time skip, and the Monster Trio destroy two with relative ease.
  • You Shall Not Pass: Kuma had a mission directive installed to protect the Thousand Sunny until one of the Straw Hats showed up.

"Pirate Empress" Boa Hancock

Child Voice: Kanae Ito (JP)
Adult Voice: Kotono Mitsuishi (JP)

The sixth of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be introduced. Hancock is the Empress of the isolated Amazon Lily and captain of the Kuja Pirates. Renowned throughout the world for her beauty, she puts on the appearance of being distant, aloof, and, well, a Jerkass of the highest order, spoiled and selfish, prone to looking down on others. Of course, she's not above exploiting her reputation for all it's worth, as she causes most people to completely lose their composure and turn into gooey, love-struck morons.

However, this is proven to be a Jerkass Facade as her past was not a pretty one. She was at first a normal young girl who, at an early age, witnessed Gold D. Roger's execution, and later hung out with her sisters Marigold and Sandersonia and the Kuja pirates. At age 12, while sailing with the Kujas, the three sisters were captured by slavers. After that, the three pre-teen girls spent four hellish years under the thumb of the World Nobles, who among other things forced them to eat Devil Fruits, in her case the Love-Love Fruit (Mero Mero no Mi) whuich allows her to turn people who lust after her into stone, and branded them like cattle. Being branded as slaves is a constant shame, and she would rather die than let it become known. When Hancock was sixteen, a man named Fisher Tiger appeared and while his goal was simply the liberation of the fishman slaves, he freed as many as he could without discrimination. The sisters later were taken in by Elder Nyon, Raleigh and Shakuyaku, and returned to the Kuja pirates; to not let them know the truth, they said that they had killed a Gorgon and thus were punished with their brands, gaining fame as the Gorgon Sisters. The psycholgical damage, however, had already been done...

She has also fallen madly in love with series protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, creating some hilarious scenes together. After all, watching a renowned Ice Queen fawn like a school girl over the completely love blind Luffy whenever he appears is pretty ridiculous.

Her former bounty was 80,000,000 Beri.

  • Accidental Marriage: Luffy, please never, ever hug and offer a vaguely romantic sounding promise to a hot, semi-delusional Amazon when she is madly in love with you. Now you have to deal with the consequences, though to pretty much anyone else in the One Piece universe it wouldn't be "deal with the conquences" so much as "hit the jackpot".
    • Not really, though. He ends up turning her down. Twice.
  • Action Girl: She really lives up to her title.
    • Badass: As of chapter 560, the reason she got the title of Warlord of the Sea is revealed to be more than the result of her Devil Fruit, as Smoker's Jutte and face can testify.
    • Badass Adorable: The adorable side isn't as prominent as in other characters in the series, but she does have moments where she looks pretty damn cute.
    • Battle-Dancing Kicking Lady of War: She fights with graceful, whirling, face-breaking kicks against the strongest pirates in the world and is quite likely the deadliest hand to hand fighter of the Shishibukai.
    • Charles Atlas Superpower: She's capable of pulverizing multiple petrified enemies, and later a Pacisfista's head, with a single kick from her bare leg, not to mention being insanely fast and she was one of the few (including Mihawk and Doflamingo ) to leave unscated from the War. This came as a Meaningful Echo, since it was constantly stated that strength is beauty for the Amazons and even Sengoku considered her monstrously strong..
    • Taken for Granite: Her Devil Fruit power can turn people to stone if their mind is filled with lewd thoughts. As a result of her beauty this includes pretty much anyone in her general vicinity other than Luffy, who is immune thanks to the power of sheer weapons-grade obliviousness. She can even petrify inanimate objects in some cases, for some reason.
  • Adult Child: Has her moments of this, especially when it comes to Luffy. Much more apparent in the Anime.
  • Animal Motifs: The snake, being beautiful and vain. She also resides on an island where serpents are the pet of choice.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Yep.
  • Berserk Button: Do not, I repeat do not threaten Luffy's life if she's there to see it.
  • Broken Bird: The World Nobles are responsible to why she's such a bitch.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: To Luffy and Luffy alone.
  • Does Not Like Men: The only exceptions are Luffy and Silvers Rayleigh.
  • Dragon Lady: Possibly. Amazon Lily does seem to have some Chinese influences to it.
  • Easily Forgiven: After hearing about her past, Luffy puts aside the borderline Moral Event Horizon moment she just put him through. Then again, she forgave Luffy first.
    • No matter what she does, she will always be forgiven because she is beautiful.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: And thanks to her Love-Love Fruit power, she uses that affection as a weapon.
  • Finger Gun: Her Pistol Kiss technique. It even fires heart-shaped bullets.
  • Forehead of Doom
  • Freudian Excuse: Her past as a slave has made her what she is today.
    • Fridge Horror: Considering that she was Made a Slave when barely 12 or 13 years old, her childish and borderline ridiculous obsession with Luffy's love starts making an uncomfortable lot of sense...
  • From a Certain Point of View: After seeing her attack everyone indiscriminately, a Marine asks her whose side she's on. Hancock explains that she agreed to fight Whitebeard, not ally herself with the Marines, and that any man (except Luffy, but they don't know that) before her is an enemy.
  • Gainaxing: Despite being perfectly still all the time she was onscreen, her boobs got really jiggly during Marineford arc.
  • Heel Face Turn: It wasn't simply because she fell in love with Luffy. This (and the falling in love after) happened after Luffy said he punched out a Celestial Dragon-- the world nobles that, at one time, owned Hancock and her sisters as slaves.
  • Hello, Nurse! and Ms. Fanservice: To date, the only One Piece character to be truly immune to her charms is Luffy, due to being an Oblivious to Love Chaste Hero.
  • Jerkass Facade: Her putting up a strong front amounts to this, though it's debatable what percentage of it is "facade" and how much of it is just plain Jerkass.
    • She has one hell of a Freudian Excuse, and given how it all links up to why she acts like an asshole, makes it a one sided debate. The real debate is how far she is willing to go over the Moral Event Horizon just to keep up the facade to protect herself.
      • The simplest explanation is that she's just immature; if you gave an emotionally damaged 12 year old young girl that kind of power, she'd probably act the same way.
    • The best definition of her would be Jerkass Woobie. A bitch who became the way she is due to sheer force of trauma.
  • Kick the Dog: Played for laughs with examples of kitten/puppy/baby seal kicking. Not played for laughs with grandma defenestration and having her sisters try to kill Luffy's defenseless friend just to screw with him and almost succeed at it.
    • The former, once you find out the connection between Hancock and Nyon, is lessened greatly. It's Hilarious in Hindsight actually; Iit isn't so much evil as being a bit of a bitch when you know the person is superhuman and won't be harmed. This is the type of prank Captain Marvel would pull on Supes. The latter, however, does crank it Up to Eleven and becomes a borderline Moral Event Horizon moment.
  • Ki Attacks: She is the master of all forms of Haki and one of the few whom can use the Conqueror's Haki. While it's unknown if her kicks are fuelled by Busoshoku Haki or simply brute strength, she can hurt and kill Logias Type with ease.
  • Love Hurts: Or in her case, causes physical illness.
  • May-December Romance: Luffy is 19. She is 31.
  • One Woman Army: She was in the tick of the war and shown facing wave after wave of the strongest New World and White Beard pirates calling for her blood ... and came out without a single hair out of place.
  • Running Gag: Her habit of looking down on others so much that it gets reversed and she starts looking up.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: Her snake Salome can track ships on the ocean floor. Apparently there's nowhere in the world Luffy can go that she can't or won't be able to find him.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful: She believes that she can get away with doing whatever she wants. Why? Because she's hot, and she knows it.
  • Shipping Goggles: In-universe. In regards to Luffy and his crew. See here, around 4:19.
  • Ship Sinking: Any reasonable chance for Luffy/Hancock got intentionally trampled pretty fast. Not that it's a surprise since One Piece has always been a strictly No Hugging, No Kissing series. Or that it matters at that since Hancock takes literally everything Luffy says as a declaration of love.
  • Ship Tease: No, this ISN'T a contradiction to the above. When asked by a fan, Word of God made all her personal information that dealt with romance--from her astrological sign to her blood type--sync up with Luffy's to be the perfect match, and she is even named after Thomas Hancock, the English inventor who founded the British rubber industry. She should be the perfect match for Luffy... but alas, he is a Chaste Hero.
  • Shrinking Violet: No, really. Not that anyone in the world besides Luffy will ever see that side of her, but he's far too dense to even realize the connotations, silly little kid that he is.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: In a sense. She pretty much hates men, but spares her warm side only for the object of her love, Luffy.
  • Slave Brand: The Hoof of the Rising Dragon.
  • Tattooed Crook: Though she's evidently stopped being a crook, she and her sisters bear the "Hoof of the Rising Dragon" on their backs, burned onto them as marks of their slavery to the World Nobles.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female of the Warlords.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Especially in the anime, where they're a navy-blue color.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: She's based on the Gorgon myths, the Greek goddess Circe and perhaps even the Sirens.
  • World's Strongest Woman: She is considered one of the mightiest warriors in all the seas and hands down, the strongest woman alive... with the probable exceptions of Big Mom and Catarina Devon.

Trafalgar "Surgeon of Death" Law

Former Members

"Mr. 0" Crocodile

"Justice is only for the people who take it."

Voiced by: Ryuzaburo Ohtomo (JP), David Brimmer (EN, 4Kids), John Swasey (EN, Funi)

Crocodile is the second of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to be formally introduced. During his early travels, he eventually became disillusioned and began to view those who sailed for fortune and glory to be two-bit upstarts. He secretly formed a criminal organization called Baroque Works, whose public aim was to take over the prosperous country of Alabasta and create a utopia. To accomplish this he worked to undermine Alabasta's King's influence by defeating criminals before the army could, and by exploiting a drought in order to pit the kingdom against an army of rebels. His Devil Fruit, the Sand-Sand Fruit (Suna Suna no Mi), lets him turn into and control sand, a very useful ability in the desert kingdom.

His former bounty was 81,000,000 Beri.

  • Animal Motifs: The crocodile, keeping monstrous crocodiles as pets and having a scar that resembles a crocodile's smile.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Is every bit as powerful (and then some) as he lets on.
  • Badass: Hits the qualification line and keeps on running.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Goes to battle while dressed like a blinged-out mafia don, complete with a ring on almost every finger and a pimpin' green fur coat. In fact, after being broken out of prison by Luffy and Ivankov, he actually takes the time to get similar clothing before making their escape in earnest. He now sports an all-black version of his Alabasta outfit, which is universally considered to be much more Badass than his old one.
  • Bad Boss: Regardless of how well you've served him, it's very unlikely that you'll survive working for him.
  • Big Bad: Of the Baroque Works Saga and arguably the most widely recognized in the series.
  • Big Damn Heroes: For a man who was so thoroughly portrayed as a Complete Monster the first time around, he's really making an effort to invert it here. First, he takes out two Marines about to execute Ace. Second, he takes on Mihawk to buy Luffy time to reach Ace and save Mr. 1. Third, he takes on Admiral "punched a hole through the guy made of living fire" Akainu to rescue Luffy and Jimbei.
    • This is, more likely, Villainous Rescue. Crocodile has made it no secret that his enemy is the Marines, and not Luffy. Once he decided that Whitebeard had become too old and weak to be worth his time, he spent the rest of the battle trolling the Marines. Adding to that, Mihawk cut down the one henchman he actually liked and Akainu's track record was getting way too good for Crocodile's liking. The whole thing reads like one big case of It's Personal.
  • Bloody Murder: How he finally met his defeat.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Averted, despite the fact that he's one-half a Bond Villain as it is. The first time he fought Luffy, he buried him alive in the middle of the desert; the second time, he drained all the water out of Luffy's body. Only an outside interference and blind luck saved him, respectively.
  • The Chessmaster: Pretty much covers everything he did.
  • Combat Pragmatist: What makes his Touch of Death so deadly, besides the obvious reasons, is that he also possesses the ability to teleport (by dissolving into sand, then reforming anywhere he wants). This means he can dissolve and reform right in front of his enemy and grab them with his Right Hand of Doom, oftentimes with his right hand already around them before he starts to reform. Unlike most villains who could do something like that, Crocodile actually does, and you're going to need some insane luck to survive it.
  • Crazy Prepared: He was prepared for literally every setback to his plan by the Straw Hats and Vivi, even those with the slimmest of chances.
    • Even when forced into fighting with his hook (which is very unusual considering he's Logia-type), he has a poisoned backup hook. And if that's broken, he can eject a knife in its place.
    • It is shown very well throughout the Alabasta arc that when the Straw Hats and Vivi had one Hope Spot after another in their attempts to stop the war, that every single time Crocodile already had a counter set in place to crush their attempts. It reached the point where the only way to foil his plans was the defeat the man himself. There wasn't a single setback or hole in his overall plan, and by the end the Straw Hats were reduced to brawling amongst the civil war they failed to prevent while Vivi screamed her lungs out.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Of the "sandman" variety. His powers are also associated with "dryness," which means moisture makes him vulnerable... but also that he can suck the water of things (like the earth... or a person) with his right hand.
    • Nigh Invulnerable: His Devil Fruit makes him immune to pretty much everything. Unless it's wet, that is.
      • Ivankov implies that he knows of a third weakness besides water and seastone. Knowing Ivankov, it is probably hilarious.
        • Probably hilarious, and if Oda keeps up with his ability to make call backs regardless of how long ago they were, we will find this weakness out.
    • Touch of Death: Posseses one of the most deadly powers in the series; he can drain an infinite amount of moisture from anything he touches with his right hand, reducing humans to mummies and anything else to dust. Technically, he doesn't even have to use the hand, as he makes a crescent blade from the same arm that has a similar effect.
  • Enemy Mine: Teams up with Luffy to get out of Impel Down and have a shot at taking out Whitebeard. Somewhat subverted in that Luffy doesn't trust him (and wasn't going to release him at first), but is talked into it by Ivankov, who knows a secret that keeps him in check. Both he and Jimbei seem to be keeping their eyes on him to make sure that he doesn't stab them in the back.
    • Inverted with Doflamingo, as he refused his assistance to take on Whitebeard.
    • Played straight again in chapter 566, when he kills the two Marines that were supposed to execute Ace. When Sengoku calls him out on it, asking why he's siding with Whitebeard, he justifies his action by claiming that Whitebeard can be killed any time, but he won't let the Marines have their way.
    • The most shocking part of it all is his (thus far) unwavering loyalty to his agreement. He could have have, on multiple occasions, abandoned his partners in crime, yet is even going so far as to protect them.
  • Evil Counterpart: For Luffy. It is heavily hinted that Crocodile's true dream was to become the Pirate King, and he is now obsessed with sadistically trampling dreams and hopes of those weaker than him. Unlike Luffy, who followed his dream, Crocodile abandoned his, thinking that dreams, faith in others, etc. are all useless, and that the only thing that matters is sheer power, no matter how it is obtained. As a result, he became the complete opposite of Luffy in every way.
    • The point about crushing people's dreams is a good one, because that's exactly what Luffy and crew do to their opponents, instead of killing them. It's less heinous than it sounds from that description, but still...
  • Evil Laugh: Most villains in One Piece have distinctive laughs, but Crocodile's creepy monotone staccato is, perhaps, the most memorable one.
  • Evil Plan: His Plan to take over Alabasta, from beginning to end, as its what drives the arc. It's hinted that he's pulling another one with his decision to go to Impel Down. It involves
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Just look at his seiyuu.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Seems like a cool-enough man to have a beer with. 'Tis all an act, though.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's been heavily implied there's a reason he went from what was described as being very similar to Luffy in outlook to the cynical Jerkass he is now, and it's probably a Tear Jerker.
  • For the Evulz: Even with his all his intricate plans and important work to do, he still takes time out of his day to torture a determined old man trying to save his destroyed town by sending him regular destructive sandstorms. And his mind raping of Princess Vivi was largely unnecessary, but he still found it highly entertaining.
  • Fur and Loathing: And keep in mind that he lives in the desert.
  • Handicapped Badass: Both of his hands are pretty badass, but his Hook Hand is practically a Badass Transplant.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: The destruction of Alabasta was only the surface of his Gambit Roulette. If he couldn't find the Pluton, though, he would still take over the country as its new monarch.
  • Hook Hand: It's even golden. The hook is also removable. Underneath is... another hook.
    • Though the second hook is also poisonous. And underneath that hook is a dagger.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Though he wasn't actually killed by the attack, Crocodile gets absolutely livid when Whitebeard is stabbed by one of his misguided crew mates.
  • Large and In Charge
  • Left for Dead: This seems to be a poor habit of his when he gets too angry with his foes as he does this then, takes off. This lead to his downfall in Alabasta against a Determinator like Luffy.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He's the first villain to give Luffy a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown in their first fight to the point that Luffy could only make him mad and not even hit him properly! Oh, and unlike most villains he's the only one so far to beat Luffy twice in one arc.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Just look at his outfit. Oh, and he prepares a feast for Vivi when he's holding her captive.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has a surprisingly large female fan base. Might be the brains, might be the build, might be the awesome suits, or maybe it's just because chicks dig guys who are overflowing with cool.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast
  • Never Smile At a Crocodile: His obvious Animal Motifs. He also keep several gargantuan Bananadiles as pets.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: He's a Pirate, knight, pimp, sandman, boss, Samurai, hero, villain, crime lord, amputee, ex-con and cowboy, as of the SBS.
  • No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Dine: Prepares a feast for a captured Vivi.
  • Not So Different: With Doflamingo. Both had the position as one of the Seven Warlords, neither of them believe in dreams (especially those seen in the Age Of Pirates), both have little desire to keep subordinates who fail them, and both are downright sadistic. However, when Doflamingo offers to help Crocodile kill Whitebeard, Crocodile told him to get out of his face, and threatened to kill him.
    • In a way, he's also similar to Luffy, and when he talks to him, mentions that he was just as naive as him, and even wanted to (and still does want to) become King of the Pirates; the scar on his face may further cement this, as his personality is hinted to have been like Luffy's. In all likelihood, his experiences in the Grand Line changed him.
      • His recent decision to become a pirate again and head for the New World, meaning that he is once again chasing his dream brings him closer to Luffy and even further away from Doflamingo.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: In their first encounter, he gave Luffy a few minutes to mess around before swiftly impaling him and burying him alive.
  • Obviously Evil: Oda tends to draw him appearing more treacherous than any other character in the series. Seriously. If there's a close-up on his face, expect it to be at an ominous angle, with plenty of creepy facial shadows. If he gets beat up, his hair will dangle in front of his face, making him look even creepier. If he's in a good mood, he'll give a Slasher Smile that'll put Doflamingo to shame. Hell, in his last appearance before the time skip, he's in a close-up panel giving the most sinister looking Slasher Smile the series has ever seen. Even the anime depicts him as having skin so pale he's two shades of grey away from being a full-blown Vampire.
  • Off with His Head: Being a Logia, this is a minor annoyance to Crocodile.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He can turn entire cities into barren deserts if he wants to, and sometimes he does.
  • PurplePoison: His hidden hook has this.
  • Self-Restraint: When Miss Doublefinger and other members of Baroque Works try to rescue him from prison, he and Daz Bones decide to stay and go to Impel Down. Both were originally planning on staying in Eternal and Inferno Hell respectively for who knows how long, and left basically because they were bored.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: "Desert Spada" and "Desert La Spada".
  • Shout-Out: Hook for a hand, has pet gators, named Crocodile? He's an obvious reference to Captain Hook from Peter Pan.
  • Smoking Is Cool
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: Subverted. Despite being a villain fairly early in the series, Crocodile is one of the most powerful people in the One Piece world. Even in recent arcs he's fighting quite evenly with many infamous top-tiered figures.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Just because he's working together with Luffy doesn't mean either of them is happy about it, although Crocodile's not one to hold a grudge.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: With Whitebeard. He violently turns down Doflamingo's offer to team up against Whitebeard and even saves Ace from his execution so that the World Government wouldn't have the upper hand on Whitebeard. He also becomes absolutely furious when Whitebeard allows himself to be stabbed by Squad.
  • The Social Darwinist: Displays some more benign aspects of this, Crocodile hates weakness, and people who believe in things without the strength to back them up, this is in opposition to Luffy who will fight for anybodies beliefs, no matter how weak they are.
  • Villainous Valor: Crocodile is a guy with no extraordinary physical skills or toughness, and Luffy just managed to pierce his invincible defenses, what does Crocodile do? Stand up, laugh at Luffy and tell me how weak he is before kicking his ass, for the second time. Crocodile has balls.
    • Crocodile has fought: an entire pirate crew at once, a ship full of marines, the strongest man on earth, a man made out of fucking diamond, man with highest known bounty, deadliest swordsman, most dangerous admiral, and the god damned protagonist of the series three times.
      • And the winner of the OP character contest in 2011.
    • He's killed anyone who's had the balls to try to humiliate him.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: His front as Alabasta's guardian made him revered in the country he was secretly trying to take over.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: He's an amazing strategist and has one of the deadliest powers in the series, but his fruit powers are more susceptible to water and other liquids than other devil fruit users because of the element it uses. It's even weak enough to the point a nice drizzle or being hit with any wet object (such as fists) will nullify his logia powers temporarily. Good thing he is prepared for such events by being skilled in other combat arts.
  • Wicked Cultured
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Too bad for Ms. All-Sunday, though subverted in that it did work out for her in the end.

Jinbe, "First Son of the Sea"

Marshall D. Teach -- "Blackbeard"

Gekko Moriah

"Straw Hat... Ughah!... Then you go see for yourself... What a real nightmare is...! In the New World!"

Voiced by: Katsuhisa Houki (JP)

The fifth of the Seven Warlords to be formally introduced. Gekko Moriah resides on a massive island/ship known as Thriller Bark, where he kidnaps unsuspecting travelers and uses the power of the Shadow-Shadow Fruit (Kage Kage no Mi) to strip them of their shadows and utilizes them to raise an army of zombies. He believes the undead to be superior to the living, as they can just be replaced when destroyed and do not possess souls. This way of thinking is due to his entire crew being wiped out by the Emperor Kaidou some time in the past.

His former bouny was 320,000,000 Beri.

  • Adult Child: He spent at least half of his screen time during the Thriller Bark Arc acting like this. Then he got serious.
  • Ambiguously Human: He's a giant horned albino with a body shaped like a bowling pin.
  • Animal Motifs: The gecko, his clothing and overall features resembling a gecko, and a bat.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Subverted as he used others to fight him, and as soon as he fights, he's a glorified punching guy.
  • Big Bad: Of the Thriller Bark Arc.
  • Brilliant but Lazy: Moriah is indeed a badass competitor worthy of his title of Warlord. He's also currently a lazy bum whose motto is "You do it!" which made him rusty.
  • Casting a Shadow: His Devil Fruit lets him manipulate and even steal someone's shadow.
    • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Himself in Shadows Asgard form
    • Bad Powers, Bad People: His Devil Fruit works by ripping off people's shadows, also leaving them without a reflection. Oh, and they disintegrate in direct sunlight. He then takes these shadows and either absorbs them to make himself stronger or makes an army of zombie slaves. The zombie doesn't even have the personality and will of the original person it's made from. Honestly, what morally good use could a power like this be put to?
    • Dual-Wielding: The scissors he uses to cut off peoples' shadows can be split in two to be used as swords. And if he absorbs the shadows of several swordsmen, he can even become a Master Swordsman himself.
    • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: His Lizard Horn Spear impaled even a colossal beast like Oars Jr. with ease.
    • Impossible Shadow Puppets: Inverted with his Shadow Revolution, in which he controls the shape of the shadow to change the shape of the body casting it, due to the fundemental law of nature that the object and the shadow must always be the same shape. He demonstrated this by turning Oars into a Rubber Man and a giant ball.
    • Living Shadow: He can animate his shadow, which he calls Doppelman, to fight for him while he lazes around, make a legion of sharp-toothed bats, or a large spear with a lizard-shaped hilt out of said shadow.
    • The Necromancer: revives the undead by implanting shadows of his victims within them.
    • Nigh Invulnerable: His shadow can be attacked, but will completly reform without much trouble.
    • Ninja Log: He can switch locations with his shadow at any time, giving him a defense similar to Logia users.
    • One-Winged Angel: Shadows Asgard; this also counts as Clipped-Wing Angel since this form can be defeated by beating the shadows out of him. Also crosses over into The Last Dance territory.
    • Shaping Your Attacks: Can turn his shadow in a flock of bats, a lizard-like spear and anything else he could imagine probably...
    • Weakened by the Light: People who have had their shadows stolen by Moriah will be vaporised in the sunlight. Although if their shadow returns to them before they're completely vaporised they'll return to normal (see Impossible Shadow Puppets).
    • Zerg Rush: His Brick Bat technique.
    • Zombie Apocalypse: His Devil Fruit powers enable him to revive dead bodies by implanting shadows within them. When the Straw Hats showed up he had collected roughly a thousand of them.
    • Zombie Mooks: He uses his Devil Fruit power to make them in place of a traditional crew.
  • Evil Albino: He's a white skinned giant.
  • Expy: Possibly of the Disney version of |Hades, especially 20 years ago.
  • Flunky Boss: A non-video game example, as he prefers to have his underlings do the work for him. His first fight with Luffy has him literally sitting on his ass, laying out, and offering commentary while Luffy tried, and failed, to get past Moriah's shadow.
  • Freudian Excuse: After his Nakama were wiped out, he began avoiding new attachments and surrounding himself with completely replaceable -- and nigh-indestructible -- zombies.
  • Gonk: Is he even supposed to be human?
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: His entire face and neck seem to be sliced vertically in half and stitched back again. Although 20-odd years ago, he had considerably fewer stitches, implying that it's more likely just a fashion choice.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Not even taking into consideration losing his Warlord status and nearly dying because he'd become too weak, just compare his current self to how he used to be [dead link]. Having all of his Nakama slaughtered and chin torn off really fucked him up.
  • Horned Humanoid: He's one of the three giant characters to have some.
  • Jerkass: Although his minions are very loyal to him, all he cares about is his giant, Oars. He also seems to an ass to everyone he contacted with.
    • You can blame Kaido for that.
  • Large and In Charge: So very much to the zombies, but is weak compared to the other Warlords. Not anymore.
  • Made of Iron: He may lack strength, but think about it: he got up after being totally pummeled by Nightmare Luffy, alias Luffy with the skills and fighting power of 100 people combined to his own. He got up (though after some time), went One-Winged Angel and then survived two Gom Gom Giant Jet Shell in a row and a falling tower before finally fainting. He may be weak and spineless, but he surely has one hell of a stamina!
  • Meaningful Name: "Gekko" is Japanese for "moonlight" and also refers to his Animal Motif, the gecko. Moria is a very creepy and dangerous location in Middle-earth.
  • Monster Clown: Сheckered trousers and ridiculous boots he wears don't exactly fit your typical image of a fearsome necromancer. Plus, the whole attitude.
  • Obviously Evil: Nothing screams "I'm evil!" more than a demonic appearance.
    • He looked even more sinister back in the day when he was thin enough to actually have a jawline, and was also Hell-Bent for Leather, apparently.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: He didn't take the announcement that he had outlived his usefulness very well, and skidadled.
  • Slasher Smile: Plastered all over his face.
  • Villainous Breakdown: His is one of the most nightmarish in the whole series.
    • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: His following rant againts Luffy, stating that he's going to lose all his crew in the New World in his current state. Fridge Horror comes along when you realize that, he's right!
      • Then we had a two-year time skip where all the Straw Hats did was train/prepare. Now we'll see just how 'right' Moria was.
  • The Worf Effect: After losing to Luffy, he's one-shoted by Jimbei and finally kicked out of the group after the war.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He didn't take it very well.
  1. The better for her to kick with
