Overcoming the Clashing Tides

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Overcoming The Clashing Tides is a Pokémon Anime/Special crossover fanfiction by DemigodWitch96.

The story begins with Ariana, one of Team Rocket's admins proposing an alliance with all of the crime syndicates except Team Plasma. They all accept and Ariana quickly orders the kidnapping of six children of the Dex Holders. Too bad they never saw a group of interfering kids rescuing them coming...

Ashley and Maria are the twin daughters of Ash and Misty. Drake and Alexandra (aka Alex) are the twin children of Paul and Dawn. Jason (aka Jay) and Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) are the children of Drew and May.

Citrine is the daughter of Red and Yellow. Cobalt is the son of Green and Blue. Bronze is the son of Gold and Crystal. Jet is the son of Silver and his wife, Kotone. Amethyst (sometimes called Ame) is the daughter of Ruby and Sapphire. Mercury is the son of Dia and Platina.

Other characters are the main characters' parents (both present and past), Lewis, son of Gary and Leaf, cousin of both the Ketchum twins and Cobalt, Tanzanite (or Tanzy), Amethyst's younger sister, Jonah, the son of Trip and Iris, and Copper who of Chapter 24 is now dead, the younger brother of Mercury, Ronnie, the cousin of Drake and Alex and son of Reggie and Maylene.

Overcoming the Clashing Tides has humor, romance, some drama, and friendship. Read to find out more!

Tropes used in Overcoming the Clashing Tides include:
  • Abusive Parents: Rory seems to find Conway's treatment of her normal, flinching when somebody raises their hand, as if she is going to be hit.
  • Aerith and Bob: Basically, all of the second generation Dex Holders.
    • Amethyst is considered a girl's name, though. I'm actually not sure about Citrine...
      • There's also a bunch of new characters, including Moonstone (but goes by Luna), Em, Auburn (who's a guy), Jade, Cyan, Hazel, and Sappho...
  • Alternate Timeline: Apparently, the Dex Holders' kids and the anime gang's kids were never meant to meet.
    • Originally, the Dex Holders and the anime gang were from different dimensions. But after Cyrus messed with Palkia and Dialga, trying to create his own world, it forced the two dimensions to collide. However, Arceus managed to fix it, but there is now a dimension where the Dex Holders and the anime gang exist side by side.
  • Always Identical Twins:
    • Ashley and Maria, they're identical twins.
  • Badass Family: The Fawkes family.
    • Auburn is one of the most powerful trainers of the Resistance, while Citrine eventually becomes the head of the medic sector.
    • Jasper's no pushover, either, even though he's not a leader of the Resistance.
  • Battle Couple: Cobalt and Alex.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Ashley swears that she isn't jealous but everybody can see that she's lying... Especially when she is beating Jay up with her bat.
  • Berserk Button: Almost everybody has one!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Lizzie, Drake, and Citrine.
    • Many people see Lizzie as a ditz but she can kick some major ass when she is actually serious.
    • Citrine takes after her mother when it comes to her temperament. She may be short but she will kick your butt if you make her angry.
    • Drake is very nice but he is the son of Paul.
  • Older Sibling Instinct: Where to begin?
  • Bilingual Bonus: Apparently, Mercury and Copper can speak Japanese.
  • Blue Eyes: Drake, Jay, and sort of Ashley and Maria, since they have blue-green eyes.
    • Ironically, Maria has water powers akin to Waterbending for Avatar the Last Airbender.
    • Let's add Opal and Kyle to the list.
  • Braids of Action: Lizzie has hers in one long French braid.
  • Catch Phrase: Alex has one. Usually when a character denies something.

Alex: (deadpan) It's written all over your face.

  • Character Development:
  • Childhood Friends: All of the second generation Pokédex Holders are one group.
    • Ashley, Drake, Lewis, Kyle, and Alex are another.
    • Can't forget about Maria, Jay, and Lizzie.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Averted with the anime kids.
    • Both of the Ketchum twins consider the boy that they were closest to in childhood as a brother.
    • Unfortunately, both Jet and Mercury's crushes on Citrine and Amethyst respectively are unrequited.
  • Covert Pervert: After an, ah, interesting scene with Bronze and Lizzie, Bronze is revealed to be one.
  • Crazy Prepared: Jay. He became veeeery paranoid.
  • Dead Little Brother: Poor Mercury.
    • Copper sacrificed his soul so Kyurem would calm down, letting the others beat Ghetsis. It was not pretty when Mercury got his revenge.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Alex, of course.
    • Jasper seems to be joining the club.
  • Death by Childbirth: Ruby's birth mother died in childbirth.
  • Elemental Powers: MARIA.
  • Everything's Better with Penguins: Alex owned a Piplup, a gift from her parents right before she left for the Sinnoh region. It eventually evolved off-screen into Prinplup and later Empoleon in the prequel.
  • Eyes of Gold: Bronze, obviously, but the typical personality is off.
    • Citrine can be considered this as her eyes are described as amber.
    • Let's add Pyrite.
  • Fingerless Gloves: Alex owns a black pair , a gift from Lizzie for her birthday.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: Ashley, Maria, Alex, and Lizzie.
  • Get a Room: Lewis and Tanzy. Heck, Pearl even comments on their fighting!

Pearl: Get a room, you two!
Lewis & Tanzy: *glares*

  • Gray Eyes: Alex, Jet, and Mercury.
    • Alex's personality just screams calm and a strong-willed person.
    • Mercury... Not so much. You can blame Pearl's influence on him for that.
  • Green Eyes: Lizzie and Cobalt.
    • Let's add Jade to the list.
  • Hair of Gold: Citrine, obviously. She's pretty innocent, too.
    • Let's add Luna to this.
    • Hazel, as well.
  • Handsome Devil: Jay just screams this trope.
  • Heel Face Turn: Cyan is revealed to be really Sora, and he betrays the rebels in favor for the government, killing Lewis in the process.
    • Cobalt was not happy.
    • Eventually, this is averted as it is revealed that Sora was playing double agent.
  • Heroic Lineage: Ashley and Maria.
    • Ashley is an Aura Guardian in training.
    • Maria can use water as a weapon.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Instead of using God, the character use legendary Pokemon, mostly using Arceus.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Sorry, Amethyst. Drake belongs with Maria.
    • Jonah seems to be joining this trope as well.
  • How Do I Shoot Aura?: Ashley really had no idea until she got training.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Minor example with the Ketchum twins.
    • Maria usually wears her hair in a high ponytail.
    • Ashley's is usually in a low ponytail.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Call Alex by her full name (Alexandra) and die
    • Jay's full name is Jason.
    • Lizzie's real name is Elizabeth, but who wants to go by that?
  • In the Blood: Almost of all the characters has the same personality as one of their parents.
  • Kid Hero: Everybody!
    • Except for the fact that Jay is almost eighteen.
    • And Auburn and Jade, who are twenty-two...
  • Killer Rabbit: Alex owns a Pachirisu, Citrine owns a Pikachu, and Amethyst owns a Delcatty. All are very deadly and frightening when provoked correctly.
  • Knife Nut: It's Alex's weapon of choice, when she decides to go ninja on you.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Do not mess with Drake's siblings.
    • Xanthias learned this the hard way right after he tried to rape Rory.
    • Same with Ashley.
    • Do not mess with Lewis unless you want the pulp beaten out of you, slowly and painfully.
  • Kuudere: ALEX.
    • She's mainly Type 1 but she shows some of Type 2.
    • Jet shows this sometimes.
    • Let's add Thallium.
  • Lady of War: Alex.
    • Blame Paul.
    • Jade can be considered this.
  • Like A Brother To Me: Lewis to most of the anime characters.
    • Lewis is Ashley and Maria's cousin and was raised with Ashley and the Shinji twins his whole life, so it is justified.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Ashley and Drake fit this, as do Jay and Maria.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Cobalt-Lewis, Amethyst-Jay/Lizzie, and Mercury-Drake/Alex.
    • Cobalt and Lewis's dads (Green and Gary respectively), are cousins, making Cobalt and Lewis second cousins, but had no clue since Lewis hasn't met any other Oak family members because he only found out who his dad was because of his scheming other cousins (aka Ashley and Maria).
    • Amethyst's parents are both related to May as Ruby is her half-brother (they share the same father) and Sapphire is May's cousin on her mom's side.
    • Turns out that Yellow and N are half-siblings.
    • Both Mercury and the Shinji twins' mothers are both members of the Berlitz family. They clash mainly because Mercury was raised by the 'proper' way and Alex and Drake were raised in a more easy-going way. Of course, Alex enjoys calling Mercury a prissy boy, to his chagrin. It is revealed in a recent chapter that Dawn's father was disowned after marrying Dawn's mother because she was a 'commoner'.
    • Let's add the other missing kids! Auburn, Jade, Sappho, Pyrite, Ebony, and Elle.
  • The Medic: Citrine, duh.
  • Moment Killer: Ashley killed a fluffy moment between Drake and Maria.
  • Nice Guy: DRAKE.
    • Well, he is growing a spine, now.
    • Mercury used to be this.
  • Ninja: ALEX AND DRAKE.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: All of the Pokémon!
  • Not So Stoic: Alex may look like a female stoic, but she isn't.
  • Oblivious to Love: CITRINE.
    • Amethyst too, even though she totally ships Citrine and Jet together.
    • Heck, even Ashley.
      • IT'S ALL ASH'S FAULT.
    • Heck, even Drake to an extent.
    • AUBURN.
  • Older Than They Look: Citrine.
    • She got it from Yellow but it's not as severe. She's fifteen, but can pass as a thirteen-year-old.
  • Original Character: All of the main characters!
  • Psychic Powers: Citrine and Jet. Citrine can heal and talk to Pokemon and Jet can only talk...
    • Also Ashley
  • Puberty Superpower: Ashley and Maria both got a special ability for their sixteenth birthday.
  • The Quiet One: JET.
    • Alex, sort of.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Ashley is the red. Alex is the blue.
    • Auburn is the red oni and Jade is the blue oni.
  • Running Gag: The author seems to be hinting at one in the second arc.
    • Whenever any of the main character mentions a slang word from their time, it earns them odd looks.

Lizzie: Ooh, let's play Twister!
(beat)
Jade: What?

  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Eventually this is how Bronze and Lizzie's relationship is going to be. And maybe Mercury and Amethyst.
  • Say My Name: Ashley seems to enjoy doing this.
    • "ALEX!"
    • "JAY!" Cue head bash from baseball bat and Jay yelling in pain.
  • Secret Legacy: The Ketchum twins had no idea that they were descendants of Sir Aaron.
    • Or that Ashley could use Aura .
    • Or that Maria could bend water.
    • Also, most of the future gang had no idea they were the kids of the Dex Holders.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: *coughs* Almost every couple in the story.
    • Jay and Ashley have admitted they do have feelings for each other but whenever an outsider points this out... Cue, death glares and denials.
    • It doesn't happen often with Bronze and Lizzie, but it's there.
    • Cobalt's mom teased him about Alex, for Arceus's sake.
  • Shipper on Deck: LIZZIE. Amethyst, in a way.
    • Lizzie totally ships Jay/Ashley and Drake/Maria. She kinda supports Cobalt/Alex. It was implied by Blue that she knows about Mercury's feelings about Amethyst.
    • Amethyst is exasperated by Jet and Citrine, because she just wants them together.
    • Jade seems to ship Cobalt/Alex.
  • Shout-Out: HELLO?
    • Bronze: He has blue hair, his name is BRONZE, and he's the genius of the group. He just screams Ravenclaw
    • The authoress is a big fan of Harry Potter and this shows in the fanfic...
    • Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  • Shut UP, Hannibal: Ghetsis has been the target of this trope many, many times.

Amethyst (paraphrased): JUST SHUT UP ABOUT YOUR STUPID PLAN, OLD MAN SO I CAN KICK YOUR SORRY ASS!
Alex: Ghetsis... You talk too much.

  • Sibling Yin-Yang: OH. SO. MUCH.
    • Alex and Drake.
    • Cobalt and Sora, even though Sora isn't seen for long.
    • Amethyst and Tanzy.
    • Jay and Lizzie.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Sir Aaron, yes that Sir Aaron, got the younger sister of Queen Rin pregnant, and that baby grew up to marry into the Ketchum family, making Maria and Ashley descendants of the Rota royals and Sir Aaron.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Remember Conway from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl?
    • He returns and reveals that he is Rory's adoptive father.
    • And did I forget to mention that he still has an, ah, interest in Dawn?
  • The Stoic: Jet has his moments.
  • Strong Family Resemblance:
    • The Shinji twins. It has been mentioned that Drake looks almost exactly like Paul except for his indigo hair and blue eyes. Alex looks like Dawn, except for shorter indigo hair and dark gray eyes.
    • JAY. Both in looks and personality.
    • Cobalt = Green clone. Just don't mention that to his face or he'll punch you.
    • Amethyst looks just like Sapphire except for her eyes.
    • Mini-Yellow, thy name is Citrine Fawkes.
    • Lewis looks just like his dad, Gary except his hair color.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Ashley and Maria.
  • Suggestive Collision: Cobalt and Alex in the second chapter. He fell on her, and well, accidentally groped her.
    • In Cobalt's defense, it was an accident.
    • Alex didn't even care about his apology. She just punched him.

Cobalt: *stammers an apology*
Alex: *punches him*
Cobalt: What was that for?!
Alex: For being a pervert.

    • Hm, that may be a reason why things went so downhill after that.
  • Supreme Chef: Ashley grew up learning how to cook from her grandmother, Delia. In the prologue, Mercury is mentioned to have inherited Dia's skills in the kitchen.
  • Time Travel: The main characters are now stuck in the past... When their parents just got together. Awkward... And some of the parents aren't even together...
    • Now they're in the distant future. Oh yeah, have I mentioned that the new government is anti-Pokemon?
  • Tomboy: Ashley, in a way and so is Alex, even though Dawn makes her wear skirts sometimes. Maria is between from a tomboy and girly girl.
  • Two Girls and a Guy: Plenty of examples.
    • First, Ashley, Alex, and Drake. The three of them were childhood friends and very close.
    • Same with Maria, Jay, and Lizzie.
    • Paul and Dawn's kids count too.
    • Technically, Ash and Misty's kids would count too, but Danny is too young.
    • Ruby and Sapphire's children fulfill this trope.
  • Two Guys and a Girl:
    • There's Diamond and Platinum's children, but since Copper is dead now, it doesn't really count.
    • Red and Yellow have three children, Auburn, Jasper, and Citrine.
    • There's also Green and Blue's kids, Jade, Cobalt, and Sora.
    • Mangaquest kids: Pyrite, Bronze, and Opal.
    • Silver and Kotone's kids, Thallium, Jet, and Garnet.
    • Can't forget Drew and May's kids, Jay, Lizzie, and Thomas.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Poor Mercury.
  • The Un-Reveal: Not a lot of people were shocked that Auburn and Jade were the kids of Red & Yellow and Green & Blue respectively.
    • Averted when Opal reveals that there were more missing kids.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Gender Flipped.
    • Alex Shinji: smart, strategical, and super serious.
    • Cobalt Oak: easy going, enjoys teasing Alex, and is basically a male version of Blue.
    • You do the math.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Ashley and Alex all the way.
  • World of Badass: Let's see...
  • You Really Need A Girlfriend: Bronze gets this sometimes.

Kyle: Wow. You really need a girlfriend.
Bronze: I DO NOT!
Kyle: Yes, you do. You're waaaay too uptight.
Bronze: *eye twitches*

    • Opal said this to him, but Bronze assumed something else...
