Penny and Aggie/The Popsicle War Providence In The Fall/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Fanon Discontinuity: A number of readers prefer to imagine the comic ended with this last chapter of "The Popsicle War." (In fact, Campbell and Lagacé, as the mega-arc was winding down, did consider ending the comic here, with Penny and Aggie having become friends, but Campbell felt there were still stories he wanted to tell with those characters and others.)
  • Jerkass Woobie: Karen, of all people, gets a sympathetic moment in her last significant appearance in the comic, at the end of the arc.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some readers were disappointed that Aggie, who had moments earlier shown concern for the rehabilitation of Karen (if in a misguided and ill-timed manner), failed to extend the same regard to Marshall, who actually asked her forgiveness, instead telling him they needed to be out of each other's life "for now," with that "now" eventually extending through the remainder of the comic. These fans feel that this leaves Marshall's arc unfinished. Other readers, as well as Campbell himself, have argued that Aggie's refusal to forgive him was understandable, in that he hurt her on a deeper and more personal level than Karen ever did.
