Playfield is a Pokémon one-shot Fanfic written by Venia.Silente ca. 2009, and remade in 2019.

Two fire-type Pokémon, Berecien the Rapidash and Eltenios the Arcanine, race all across the land, trying to beat the Sun to the end of the day in the faraway western coast. The story explores their performance, their reasons for racing, and the folklore behind the two species. It was first launched as a contest entry for the PokéCommunity 2009 writing contest, following the prompt "time".

In the original, 2009 version, both characters were unnamed; they both earned their names as they started featuring in more works, until the 2019 re-release version canonized those names. Ever since the 2009 release, both characters went on to feature in other stories such as Wild Pokémon in the Big City and even stories from other authors such as in Fledglings‍'‍s continuity.

The original release can be found here in PokéCommunity and the 2019 Anniversary Release here. More releases can be found in the work's official wiki page.

Tropes used in Playfield include:

But we already are the best, or didn't you notice the world blurring out back there?

  • The Big Race: the point of the story is that Berecien and Eltenios are doing this (and have been doing it for years) to show that they can be the very best like no one ever was.
  • Epic Race: from east to west, from dawn to dusk, all across the lands of Suocé.
  • Greek Mythology: Berecien mentions the myth of the horse-led chariot pulling the Sun.
  • Retired Badass: not just yet, but Berecien discusses that he will soon have to become this.
  • Updated Rerelease: the 10th Anniversary Redux edition, which among other things finally canonizes the names of both characters.
