Heroes

Core Five (Trainers)

Gary Oak

Character Development: Done prior to his first appearance. Before the story’s start, he had the arrogance beaten out of him by a brush with death.
Dragon Rider
Functional Addict: Arcane magic is highly addictive. How he deals with this after the end of the story is left to the reader’s imagination.
Heroes Want Redheads: His feelings toward Misty.
More Hero Than Thou / More Expendable Than You: Often his reasoning is that he’s just another Glass Cannon, Misty can theoretically resurrect him, and she’d be safer with Ash or one of the other less-squishy folk protecting her than if the mage was protecting her. He makes several of these sacrifices, but being a lucky bastard, he manages to survive anyway.
Playing with Fire
Simple Staff: Being a mage, he uses staves as his main weapon. Until he gets his hands on the Infinity+1 Sword Quel’Delar.
Squishy Wizard / Glass Cannon
The Hero
Undying Loyalty: He is fiercely loyal to his friends. Since they need each other in order to survive (especially since he relies on Ash to protect him and Misty to heal him), this is justified.
Write Who You Know: The reason he’s a fire mage is not only because it works for the plot, but because fire mage was, at the time, the only class-spec combination the author knew well enough to write as a main character.

Misty Waterflower

Fake Defector: First she acts as a double agent pretending to be Scourge, then she is pretty much forced into a Shoot Your Mate situation, making it look like she really has gone to the dark side.
Fiery Redhead / Heroes Want Redheads
Friend to All Living Things: It comes with being a paladin.
Healing Hands
Heroic BSOD: Several small incidents of this, with the first being after her first kill, and the largest being after James compares her to the Lich King and threatens to kill her.
Hurting Hero
Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Again, it comes with being a paladin. Or so it seems. She comes dangerously close to corruption multiple times.
Jeanne D'Archetype: Misty is a normal girl in her own world, but becomes an armored, sword-wielding holy warrior when she gets the Call to Adventure. She later leads at least one charge into combat. Sound familiar?
Knight in Shining Armor
Knight Templar: Sometimes she borders on zealotry, causing James to call her out on her similarities to the Scarlet Crusaders.
Light Is Good / Light'Em Up
Love Interest
Not So Different: While some of her similarities with Arthas or the Scarlet Crusaders are only imagined, some are very real, and very dangerous.
Reluctant Warrior: Toward humans. She has far fewer problems with massacring The Undead.
The Heart

Ash Ketchum

Badass Normal: The only one of the core five trainers without magical abilities.
Blood Knight: Sometimes he loses control of himself due to his bloodlust.

Heroes Want Redheads: Not Misty, but Zaraia.

An Ice Person: James specializes in frost magic.
Animals Hate Him
Badass: While all the characters in the story take a level or two, James blows them all away.
Dark Is Not Evil
Face Heel Turn and Heel Face Turn: He dies early on and becomes one of The Undead, only to break free and rejoin the forces of good.
Glowing Eyelights of Undeath
Good Is Not Nice
I Am What I Am: Contrasts with some other death knights by accepting that he’s undead and can use this to his advantage.
Necromancer: James usually avoids necromancy – but he won’t hesitate to use it if he feels he has to.
The Stoic: Most of the time.
The Undead
Took a Level in Badass: In the anime he is originally from, he’s a wimp. He remains so for the first couple chapters he appears in. Then the Scourge gets him…
24-Hour Armor: He’s dead and doesn’t care about comfort. He also doesn’t sleep.

Jessie Wilkes

Dark Is Edgy
Dark Is Not Evil: Jessie uses curses, hellfire, black magic, and summons demons. She fights for the good guys.
Only in It For the Money: While she technically is in it for defeating the Lich King, she repeatedly expresses a desire for gold rather than questing for other reasons.
Squishy Wizard
The Chick: Jessie has very little personal usefulness before or after outland (where her knowledge of demons is important), though she has her moments such as when she saved James from a ghoul, and when she befriended Sylvanas and the undead Forsaken. Otherwise, she’s mostly just extra firepower.

The Other Party Members

Starwisp Windsong

Fantastic Racism: She and the other elf are the party racists – interestingly, she doesn’t have much of a problem with humans or dwarves, but with other elves (blood elves, to be exact).
Forest Ranger
Good Is Not Nice: Let’s face it, Starwisp is downright mean sometimes.
Hot Amazon
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She’s really a good person, but she’s still a bitch.
Our Elves Are Better: Than other elves.
Really Three Hundred Years Old
Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Subverted. She’s the only girl in the group without red hair (hers is blue), and she’s probably the most aggressive of them all.
The Archer: Subverts the personality aspect by being short-tempered and grumpy.
The Beast Master: As a hunter, she has an animal companion in the form of an owl. Contrary to what might be expected, said owl isn’t all that bright.
The Older Immortal: She’s the oldest of the lot, at three hundred years, where the other main character immortals are under a hundred (or in Kai’s case, undefined but certainly less than two hundred).
Wolverine Claws: Starwisp’s offhand weapon is a bladed glove.

Zaraia Pentalon

Broken Bird: She’s had her heart broken a few times too many, among other things.
Break the Cutie: She was a happy, bright-eyed elf before the Scourge came. Her life went to hell from there.
Dark Magical Girl
Defrosting Ice Queen: She’s initially hostile to the heroes. Then Ash saves her from a demon after she runs out of mana.
Fiery Redhead / Heroes Want Redheads
Mayfly-December Romance: With Ash.
Older Than They Look and Younger Than They Look: Chronologically, she’s seventy, physically she’s sixteen, but she acts even younger.
Our Elves Are Better: She loses the attitude toward humans due to Ash's influence, but still hates night elves.
Squishy Wizard / Glass Cannon
The Chick: Less so than Jessie, but still.
Woobie: As close as any of the main characters will come, except, perhaps, Sir Zeliek.

Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons
My Species Doth Protest Too Much: He’s part of a faction of black dragons who have collectively pulled a Heel Face Turn against Deathwing.
Token Minority: May or may not count, since he’s a dragon, but his human form is Ambiguously Brown.

Sir Zeliek

Asexual: By word of the author, though it was never displayed. Apparently she's characterized him as being rather dense about romance, and when it's pointed out to him, he gets a little uncomfortable.
Badass Long Hair
Good Is Not Dumb: Despite what paladin stereotypes might tell you, he’s actually very intelligent. In fact, he outwits the Lich King at one point.
Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Doesn’t mean he can’t be controlled rather than corrupted, which is precisely why he needs the heroes to rescue him.

Light Is Good / Light'Em Up
Man in White
Master Swordsman: Explicitly stated to be such.
Older Than They Look: He’s been dead for seven years. He still looks like he’s in his late twenties despite being in his mid-thirties.
Parental Substitute: To some extent, for Misty.
People Puppets: Until Misty set him free, he was essentially Kel’Thuzad’s puppet.
Purple Eyes: At one point, his identity is confirmed to old friends by them.
Sad Clown: Somewhat. He’s naturally a bit of a joker, but his attempts at “lightening the mood” usually fall into this.
Stepford Smiler: To some extent. Seven years spent locked up in Naxxramas being forced to commit horrible crimes will leave one slightly traumatized.
The Mentor: To Misty
The Undead
24-Hour Armor: Same reasoning as James; he’s dead.

Rex Smith

Black Knight: Technically, black-and-red knight. Still, his armor does follow an unusually villain-like color scheme, considering he’s a paladin.
Chivalrous Pervert
Dark Is Not Evil: He’s far from evil. He’s just arrogant, is all.
Hero of Another Story: His team has clearly had plenty of adventures of their own, and only happen to get involved with the main characters later in the story.
Knight in Sour Armor
Ladykiller in Love: With Wendy, who may or may not return the feelings. This does not stop him from being a shameless flirt with all the other girls his age.
Light'Em Up
The Rival: To Gary, at least to some extent.

Wendy Harris

Beware the Nice Ones: She may be a holy priest, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know shadow magic.

Mind Control: Not the victim, but the controller. Usually she does this for the purpose of a Psychic-Assisted Suicide. Beware the Nice Ones, indeed.

In Harmony with Nature: As a tauren druid, this is a given.
Old Soldier: His tabard is nearly tearing itself apart from all the Bling of War he’s got pinned to it.
Retired Badass: Then the heroes yank him back into war.

Dark Is Not Evil: And how! Gaunt face, glowing eyes, black armor, goatee, pale hair, and all, he’s among the more heroic, idealistic characters in the story.
Happily Married: His wife is a Forest Ranger somewhere in Eversong Woods. Zaraia is the product of this happy marriage.
I Am What I Am: One of the few death knights in the story who refuses to say this.
Immortality Begins At Twenty: Subversion. He’s in the elf equivalent of his early forties, and he looks it.
Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Obviously Evil: A walking subversion.
Tragic Dream: He can never be a paladin, because he’s a death knight. Or so it appears. At the end of the story, he manages to get one bolt of holy power out.

Iridi

Flat Character: With so many characters to establish the personalities of, someone was bound to get the short end of the characterization stick. Iridi was that unlucky soul.

Badass Normal: despite being characterized roughly like a paladin, she’s just a warrior, no healing powers involved.

Knight of Cerebus: Not only does she force a retreat on the first encounter with her, she also proves to be an effective Hero-Killer.
