Posleen War Series/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Dying Like Animals: Most of the German liberals in Watch On The Rhine are Bats; they refuse to believe anything's wrong. The ones that do are Ostriches; they want to try and make peace with the Posleen. They're being manipulated by the Darhel and have some elements of Lemmings, while their leadership are Jackals. Just to hammer it home, there's a scene where some protesters are protesting outside of a Panzer Corps (essentially resurrected Nazis) base, and beating up policemen who try to stop them. After the PC leave their base and stomp the protesters into a mudhole, one of them who is uninjured (and just there to smoke pot and get laid) helps another one walk off to find medical help. The injured one talks about "This is impossible. Unbelievable. Impossible." The other asks her what's so impossible.

At length, when he had forced her back to movement to escape the rampaging soldiers, she continued. "It is impossible for people to act like those men did. They just can't have. It is impossible that our good intentions did not prevail here today. It is impossible that we are about to be invaded. What intelligent species could possibly act the way they say these 'Posleen' do? The universe simply cannot be set up that way. It is impossible."

  • Iron Woobie: Arguably, Michael O'Neal, Jr. by the end of the Posleen invasion. As far as he knows, his entire family (save one daughter, raised by aliens and becoming more like them every day) has been killed, two of them in a choice from hell at his order to save North America, and all that's left to him is a military service whose financiers are trying to shoot it in the foot at every turn. How can you not feel for the guy? Things really don't get better for him until Eye of the Storm.
  • Political Straw: Oh yeah, especially in the Kratman collaborations.
