Pound Puppies/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Hanna-Barbera series contains examples of

  • Complete Monster: Captain Slaughter: he is responsible for the destruction of the dogs' hometown and constantly tries to kill the Pound Puppies (especially Cooler, against whom he has a petty vendetta). The captain is feared and hated by all the dogs, and even Katrina (who hires him in the first place) fears him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the dogs in the movie is wearing what look exactly like Kamina's sunglasses.
  • The Scrappy: Nobody likes Brattina. This was probably intentional.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: Bright Eyes and Whopper in the second season.
    • Hell, the entire second season.
  • Villain Decay: Katrina was originally a fairly cunning opponent, willing to go to any lengths to harm/destroy the Pups. However, her motive was altered to simply "locking them all up FOREVER" after she got control of the pound in the second season... possibly because the cunning Katrina would've been a much greater threat.

The movie contains examples of

  • Non Sequitur Scene: Was there ANY point to the "All in Your Mind" musical number?
  • Cliché Storm: Every cartoon cliché is on display here.
  • Ear Worm: Every song. Mostly because they are Suspiciously Similar Song versions of much better 1950s hits.
  • Ho Yay: Reflex's condition causes him to run around in trance and kiss anyone in sight regardless of gender (or even species), so male dogs also fall victim to his hugs and kisses.
  • So Bad It's Good: Some elements of it, mainly revolving around the villain's nonsensical plan.
  • They Just Didn't Care: The quicksand looks nothing like quicksand, and Collette appears with Cooler and the gang even though she was seen being captured by Lumpy and Bones a few minutes before then.

The 2010 series contains examples of

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: Was "The General" about being in touch with your feminine side, or about being appreciated for your own talents?
  • Base Breaker: Lucky. Viewers seem to be pretty divided on Lucky.
  • Cliché Storm: Not a bad one, but it's still noticable.
  • Critical Research Failure: The "Kennel Kittens". Apparently the writer of this version had never heard of the "Pound Purries"...
  • Expy: Lucky's appearance is very similar to Charlie's. They are both mutts, and Lucky very closely resembles a German Shepherd. Lucky even has a red collar; Charlie wears one in All Dogs Go To Heaven 2.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Sterling Von Oxnard in "My Fair Rebound". He tries to sabotage Rebound during the dog show, but only because he thinks that, if he loses, his owner will put him up for sale. Why? Because that's what most of his previous owners did. It makes it much more satisfying when Mildred finally starts showing him some love at the end of the episode.
  • Love It or Hate It: This show is considered either really great or really boring.
  • Marty Stu: Lucky really seemed like this in earlier episodes. Thankfully, later episodes fleshed him out more.
  • Memetic Molester: Poor Niblet, thanks to his infamous "Secret butt fun" line.
  • Memetic Mutation: SECRET BUTT FUN!
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: And HOW. A certain show about ponies that exceeds it in popularity has made this show suffer greatly. The Hub hardly ever has anything on the show's main page!
  • So Okay It's Average: General consensus is that it's not too bad a show, but nothing really outstanding, either. Most fans expecting another My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic (or given who created the series, another Recess) were disappointed.
  • Tear Jerker: In Toyoshiko!, Toyoshiko basically commits suicide by jumping into a large magnet, thus erasing her memory. Sure, at the end of the episode, Strudel 'repairs' her, but all she did was make another Toyoshiko, it's not the same Toyoshiko. Her memories are gone, and our personalities are, to a significant degree, decided by our memories. Eventually, the original Toyoshiko's personality and the new Toyoshiko's personalities will have diverged, although Strudel won't notice, because the original Toyoshiko didn't live long enough for her memories to develop her base personality. Also, she never appears in another episode, which is odd, considering she's supposedly the only one to really understand Strudel.
  • Tough Act to Follow: The creators also made Recess, considered to be one of the best cartoons of the 90's, and fans expecting something exactly like it were a bit disappointed.
  • Uncanny Valley: Some characters (especially the humans and a few animals) look weird due to a strange mix of "cutesy" and "cartoonish".
