Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: A character wears glasses solely for the purpose of looking intelligent.

  • Straight: Bob wears glasses so that he'll look smart.
  • Exaggerated: Bob has different pairs of glasses for different occasions. Each pair will make him look smarter based on the occasion.
  • Justified: Bob is actually rather smart and is nearsighted.
  • Inverted: Bob's glasses make him look like an idiot.
  • Subverted: Bob takes off his glasses and reveals that he actually looks more intelligent without them.
  • Double Subverted: It is revealed Bob's intelligence is a result of the glasses being a Magic Feather and Bob thinking he's been smart all along.
  • Parodied: Bob wears multiple pairs of glasses at once, thinking they'll make him look very smart.
  • Deconstructed: Bob wears glasses so that he'll look smart. People don't fall for this and Bob is ridiculed and looked down upon as a result of his charade.
  • Reconstructed: Bob's glasses are magical and boost his intelligence when he wears them.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob puts on a pair of glasses and ends up acting like an idiot. Later it is revealed that they were cursed and once removed Bob ends up acting smarter than he was precurse. However, once Bob ends up getting it destroyed he ends up even smarter.
  • Averted: Bob is a Blind Seer.
  • Enforced: "This character needs to have glasses so the audience knows how smart they are."
  • Lampshaded: "What, do you think those things make you look smarter?"
  • Invoked: Bob's friend Alice is a Meganekko.
  • Defied: Bob wears contacts and is still pretty smart.
  • Discussed: "Watch him whip out those glasses later in the show."
  • Conversed: "Do all glasses imbue people with great intelligence?"
