Rance/Characters/Fiends

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Fiends are the main generals of the Monster Realm. They are created by the Archfiend giving a portion of their blood to another living creature. Up to 24 Fiends can exist at any given time, but each one created slightly weakens the Archfiend. This usually alters their physical appeareance, it stops them from aging, and gives them enough power to be a One-Man Army. They all possess the "Invincibility Field", making them immune to all forms of damage, but it can destroyed or ignored depending on certain situations: the Hero can ignore it if the death toll of humanity exceeeds 30%, the two legendary swords Chaos and Nikkou also have the ability to break it, and ultimately the Fiends themselves can hurt each other.

Unlike the Archfiend, after their "rebirth" as a Fiend, their original personnality remains unchanged, but they cannot disobey orders by the Archfiend because they are an extension of the Archfiend's power. The Fiends are currently divided between two factions: the Kayblis Faction who wants him to be the next Archfiend by killing the current one, Little Princess, and the Hornet Faction who wants to protect her.

There is also a hierarchy among the Fiends: the most powerful one is given the title of Representative Fiend, directly appointed by the Archfiend, and followed by four elites, as the Four Dread Fiends. Each Fiend can create servants named Apostles, and are created the same way as a Fiend: by giving them some of their blood, which stops their aging as well. However, the more Apostles a Fiend has, the less powerful it is.

Upon death, Fiends always leave behind them a tiny orb called "Blood Soul", which represents their very being. If it is left alone, the Fiend will eventually resurrect, though it can take anywhere from a few years to several centuries depending on circumstances. To fully kill a Fiend, their Blood Soul must be destroyed, with two ways known:

  • The Archfiend can consume it, which utterly erases the Fiend's personality and soul.
  • Another living being consumes it, and overwrites the previous Fiend's will while becoming one itself. This one can backfire as the Fiend can possess weak-willed living beings.

If humanity is ever successful in killing a Fiend, they usually keep the Blood Soul sealed by the AL Church.

In General

  • Action Girl: All of the female Fiends (yes, even Warg).
  • Adaptational Badass: A lot of them were made much stronger than their Kichikuou Rance counterpart, the most egregious exemple being Kayblis.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Along with Adaptational Badass, several Fiends of the Kayblis Faction are depicted as much more sympathetic in Rance X, and can potentially join the Human Alliance.
  • The Ageless: Becoming a Fiend stops any individual from aging.
  • Anti-Villain: The Hornet Faction choose to remain loyal to Archfiend Gai's wish to not interfere with humans and leave them in peace. Also, several Fiends of the Kayblis Faction work for him due to circumstances forcing them to rather than out of sympathy or loyalty for him.
  • Arbitrary Headcount Limit: In-Universe example. For the sake of balance to the God Planner, the total number of Fiends cannot exceed 24 at any given time. If an Archfiend wants to create a new one, they need to kill another one.
  • Back for the Finale: Roughly half of them didn't appear at all in the canonical games until Rance X. Justified since they are busy in the civil war.
  • Back from the Dead: Even after dying, as long as their Blood Soul isn't sealed or destroyed, they can be resurrected.
  • Body Snatcher: They do this to any living being who tries to consume their Blood Soul. See Grand Theft Me for details.
  • Brought Down to Badass: At the very end of Rance X: Part 2, the remaining living Fiends (with the exception of Kayblis) all lose their cursed blood upon the defeat of the Blood Memories, meaning all of them lose their immortality and are capable of aging.
  • Deflector Shields: The aptly named "Invincibility Field", which protects them from all attacks.
  • Dub Name Change: They were called "Dark Lords" or occasionally "Demons" before the official translation.
  • Face Monster Turn: Played with. Any living being who becomes a Fiend retains their will and can act freely, but they cannot directly harm their creator, the Archfiend, who controls their blood.
  • From a Single Cell: When a Fiend dies, they leave behind them an orb called a Blood Soul. If it is left alone, the Fiend will be resurrected after some time. The safest way to deal with those is to seal them via magical means.
  • Fully-Embraced Fiend: Subverted for most of them, the sole exceptions being Kayblis, Xavier, and Medusa. Played straight regarding the four Fiends created by the Archfiend Rance in the Brutal King War, as they were created for this purpose.
  • Grand Theft Me: Should any living being (who is not already a Fiend) happen to consume a Blood Soul, if it overcomes the will of the Fiend inside, it will become a new Fiend in its place, effectively killing the previous one. On the other hand, if the Fiend's will is stronger, the body will be theirs.
  • Healing Factor: They can heal any injuries, but any wound caused by the sword Chaos or Nikkou cannot heal as fast.
  • Immortal Procreation Clause: This only applies to the female Fiends, who cannot have children, related to the Arbitrary Headcount Limit above. On the other hand, the male ones can have children with mortal women. It's rare for the conception to succeed and even rarer for the mother to survive the pregnancy, so very few "half-Fiends" exist. They do not inherit the Invincibility Field nor the sheer power of their father, but they do not age past young adulthood and are tougher than normal, often having some form of special magic power.
  • Leitmotif: All of them share a common theme in two games of the series.
    • In Kichikuou Rance, the Kayblis Faction gets "Ontology" while the Hornet Faction have a more melancholic and slower version, "Ontology -Wailing-".
    • In Rance X, boss battles featuring Fiends all have "Majin Boss" as a recurring theme.
  • Monster Lord: Each of them has the authority to command massive armies of monsters for big operations, like the 100,000 monsters deployed by Camilla in Rance VI to invade Zeth or the much more massive 2 million army of Xavier against Fujiwara Ishimaru in the NC Era, more than 2000 years ago.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: While they can freely roam the world as they please, they cannot disobey a direct order from the Archfiend.
  • Noble Demon: The entire Hornet Faction (except Noce) and several members of the Kayblis Faction are in fact very nice people who can get along with humans.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite the name, not all of them are evil and plenty can coexist peacefully with humans, like most of the Hornet Faction who are okay people overall.
  • No Sell: They all possess the Invincibility Field who protects them from any conventional attack. There exist several ways of getting through it, with relative degrees of success.
  • Older Than They Look: Every Fiend is this by definition, since becoming a Fiend prevents them from aging.
  • One-Man Army: Every single one of them can handle an entire army, even without their Invicibility Field.
  • Only Mostly Dead: Being reduced to a Blood Soul.
  • Pro-Human Transhuman: The Hornet Faction actively works to protect humanity, in order to honor the last wish of Archfiend Gai.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The vast majority of the Fiends all came from the distant past of the Continent, all the way to the very first era, with Kayblis being over 6000 years old.
  • Semantic Superpower: Despite its name, the Invincibility Field does have a few flaws to exploit: it's protecting them from any attacks, so everything that is not considered an "attack" can pass through, such as simply touching them, using indirect means (i.e. pitfalls or Sensory Overload) rather than attacking them directly, or in the case of Rance, sexual assault is possible against Fiends, though very dangerous.
  • Takes One to Kill One: Outside of the existing methods in the series, Fiends can hurt each other.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The Kayblis Faction, while much powerful than the Hornet Faction, has difficulty maintaining unity since each Fiend under Kayblis didn't join out of loyalty for him and only have the broad, vague goal of invading the Human Realm.

Representative Fiend

Hornet

The current Representative Fiend and daughter of the previous Archfiend, Gai. She was originally conceived to become the next Archfiend after her father, but after the failure of the blood transfer he carefully choose an ordinary schoolgirl from another dimension to become the next Archfiend instead. When her father died, she, along with other Fiends, decided to follow his dying wish to make peace with humans with Kurusu Miki as their ruler. This causes the creation of the Hornet Faction which she leads. However, other Fiends disagreed and created the Kayblis faction to oppose her. As expected of the Representative Fiend she has LV2 Skill Levels in Magic, Holy Magic and Sword Combat. She was raised by her father to be spell-blader like him, but while her swordplay is comparable to most talented swordsmen, she mostly uses magic to fight. In combat she surrounds herself with elemental orbs created through her Magic skill. Each of these orbs have a different color and ability which are also empowered by her knowledge of countless magic spells. This makes her a fearsome foe to fight against.

Tropes exhibited by Hornet include:
  • The Ace: Can master any magic, is proficient with swords, and has the second highest Level Cap known in the series, at 320.
  • Always Second Best: Despite being the Representative, she cannot rival Kayblis in sheer power despite having a higher Level Cap than him.
  • The Archmage: She is tied with Red-Eye as the strongest caster of the Continent. RedEye actually resents her for this, though she doesn't care about the title one bit.
  • Badass in Distress: Gets captured by the Kayblis Faction, with her rescue being one of the top priorities in the Second Fiend War.
  • Benevolent Boss: Treats her subordinates with care, especially her Apostle Kenja Keiko, to the point she tried to protect her from Kayblis upon her capture before the events of Rance X.
  • Bigger Bad: Inverted. The only reason the events of the Rance series can happen at all is because she and her subordinates are keeping Kayblis' forces at bay and preventing them from invading the Human Realm.
  • Childhood Friends: With Satella, which is quite surprising given her personality.
  • Combo-Platter Powers: Her six magic spheres all contain a special power for battle, making her quite versatile in combat.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: If not rescued under a certain time limit in Rance X, she dies of her wounds after several months of torture by Kayblis.
  • Good Counterpart: To Camilla. Hornet is the direct descendant of the previous Archfiend, making her royalty like her and act like one, both have Eyes of Gold and don't smile a lot. However, while Camilla only wants to be free and live a life of leisure, Hornet intends to follow through her father's wishes and fight for world peace.
  • Hostage Situation: Her capture in Rance X lead the two remaining Fiends of her faction, La Hawzel and Silky, to fight against humanity out of fear of Kayblis killing her.
  • Hot Witch: She harbors tremendous magic and is widely recognized as the most beautiful and sexy woman of the Monster Realm, rivaling Camilla.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Downplayed, she was originally born in order to inherit the Archfiend position, but Gai ultimately deemed her to be unworthy of receiving his blood. She is far from incompetent though and she easily became the Representative Fiend. In the Epilogue of an Ending A, she actually tries to take the blood of the Archfiend before Little Princess takes over Miki, but she is unable to become the Archfiend, showing that Gai was correct in his evaluation.
  • Lady of War: She's the second strongest Fiend along with Kesselring, next to Kayblis while also being a Proper Lady.
  • Turn Out Like Her Father: She ended up being the Representative Fiend, just like her father, but didn't become the Archfiend.
  • Magic Knight: It was stated she was raised as a spell-blader just like her father, but she mostly uses magic to fight.
  • Out-Gambitted: She was overwhelmed by the Kayblis Faction in Kichikuou Rance, because she was expecting them to fight in the steppes. They instead took a shorcut through a wasteland known as the Land of Death who can even hurt Fiends.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: A mix between sexy, unapprochable and supernatural.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Downplayed. She can sometimes cracks a smile when she feels like it, but is mostly serious and composed at any time.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's one of the most prominent figures amongst monsters, who can help humanity in Rance X if she's freed from her prison.
  • Sex for Services: She will only accept having sex with Rance should he succeed at defeating Kayblis. Needless to say, this motivates him a lot to fight for humanity.
  • Sphere of Power: She has six spheres floating around her, each of them enabling a different ability.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Being the daughter of the Archfiend Gai allowed her to inherit much of his power, including the Spell-blader Skill.
  • Timed Mission: One of the main objectives of Rance X involves rescuing her from the Monster Realm. Once you reach the castle where she is locked, you need to beat 4 battles in 7 rounds or else you won't be able to save her.
  • Vapor Wear: Without her armor, her robe doesn't hide much of her body.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Hornet is recognized as such in the Monster Realm, something that hurts Camilla's pride, already very beautiful (and was one her main reasons for joining the Kayblis Faction).

Four Dread Fiends

Kayblis

The first Fiend ever created, born during the KK Era. He was originally a Lis, and was raised and transformed by the first Archfiend Kkulf Kkulf as part of an experiment. Since its death, Kayblis sought to live up to his master and began to evolve his body in monstrous ways. He's also known to be a huge coward, and rarely engages into battles unless he is 100% sure to win. Consequently, he's still alive by the Little Princess Era, living for six entire millenia and having evolved his body to an insane degree. After the death of the Archfiend Gai, and with the current Archfiend on the run, he began to make his moves to be the next Archfiend by trying to kill her, creating the Kayblis Faction. His faction consists of the majority of Fiends, and opposes the Hornet Faction.

Tropes exhibited by Kayblis include:
  • 0% Approval Rating: Almost all of his subordinates hate him, with the exceptions of his Apostles, who adore him; Stroganoff, who feels a sense of kinship with him; and Medusa, who genuinely views him as a friend despite mocking him constantly. The "From the Sea" route of Rance X features him having a Villainous Breakdown after almost all of his strongest subordinates rebel against him and he's forced to confront the fact that close to everyone hates him.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: He's been in love with Camilla for millennia, but she finds him to be completely repulsive.
  • Actually a Doombot: The Kayblis fought in the operation to occupy Shangri-La in Rance X is actually a clone made to guard it.
  • Adaptational Badass: While Kayblis is stated to be the strongest Fiend in Kichikuou Rance, Rance X plays up his strength for all that it's worth, revealing that even Hornet and Kesselring, the second strongest Fiends, are nothing compared to him in a fight and that simply being within a few hundred feet of him is enough to paralyze even humanity's strongest warriors with fear and fatigue, and outright kill an ordinary person.
  • Adaptation Expansion: While his status as a weakling who became the strongest is mentioned a few times in Kichikuou Rance, Rance X goes a step further, to the point of essentially tying every aspect of his character to it.
  • Adorkable: He's so tragically uncool despite his efforts to appear intimidating that he's surprisingly endearing for a genocidal monster. Becomes especially apparent in Rance X: Part 2, where he is now a Ridiculously Cute Critter and has lost almost all of his credibility as a villain.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Has no problem begging for his life when he believes it's being threatened. Notable examples include sending Miki a letter asking for forgiveness if she succeeds in becoming the Archfiend in Sengoku Rance and asking Rance if they could just talk things out if he defeats him earlier than intended in Rance X. Humorously, he even does this after becoming the Archfiend.
  • All Work vs. All Play: He's the all work (gained his strength through thousands of years of rigorous training and cautiously plans out everything he does) to Rance's all play (possesses naturally incredible strength that grows quickly and doesn't care about anything other than fulfilling his most immediate desires).
  • Ambition Is Evil: The only Fiend who seemingly has any interest in becoming the Archfiend also happens to be the most evil of them all.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: While almost all of his allies hate him, they all acknowledge his leadership due to his terrifying strength. The ones who don't are simply beaten into submission until they comply.
  • Back from the Dead: Revives from his blood soul 15 years after his death in Rance X, with none of the power that he'd amassed prior to his death.
  • Badass Cape: Sports a big red one.
  • Badass on Paper: The world's oldest and most powerful Fiend who has existed since near the beginning of time and has participated in countless major disasters across history is actually a cowardly wimp who is hated by almost all of his peers and has never actually ever fought in a battle that he believed he had any chance of losing.
  • Bad Boss: With the exception of his Apostles, who he's surprisingly lenient to, he treats all of his subordinates like dirt, uses force when they don't agree with him, or if he's agitated, and almost never listens to anything they tell him. Rance X reveals that he plans on killing every single Fiend, Apostle and monster with a moderate amount of power besides his Apostles, Camilla, and Stroganoff as soon as he becomes the Archfiend to avoid the risk of any of them turning against him.
  • Benevolent Boss: Surprisingly, he treats both Kaybnyan and Kaybwan relatively well, forgiving screw ups caused by them that he would otherwise kill a subordinate for making. This is explained by him having a sense of empathy for them as a former weakling himself. In turn, both have Undying Loyalty towards him. Even after his Apostles side with the Human Army against him after he takes his frustration out on them in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes, they're shown to have eventually forgiven him and returned to worshiping him by part 2. This is notably not the case in Kichikuou Rance, where he constantly yells at them for their incompetence and is suggested to violently rape them when they fail him.
  • Big Bad: Of both Rance X and Kichikuou Rance, which feature him finally gathering his troops for an all-out attack on the Human Realm.
  • Bigger Bad: Serves as this to a degree for the entire series prior to Rance X, where the looming threat of him leading the Monster Realm in an all out invasion of the Human Realm is occasionally brought up. He plays this more directly in Rance VI, where his actions are the reason for Camilla's invasion of Zeth.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gets along well with Medusa, who, like him, is a sadist who loves rape, murder, and torture.
  • Bishounen Line: His Archfiend form is a grotesque zig-zagged example of this. After transforming, his head splits open to reveal a shirtless white-haired Bishōnen humanoid torso with two beautiful naked women growing out of his shoulders. While this alone is quite unsettling, it's made even worse by the fact that the rest of his enormous and otherwise totally beastial body remains exactly the same, making him arguably even more monstrous-looking than he did as an ordinary Fiend.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: After capturing Hornet at the end of the Monster Realm civil war, he imprisons her and dedicates several months to gloating about his victory and/or raping her Apostles to death in front of her before finally making the move to kill her. This allows the Human Army a rather generous window of time to rescue her from him during Rance X. Happens again after he defeats Rance in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes, where he wastes time gloating about his victory, causing an earthquake from a volcanic eruption to break the ground Rance is laying on and prevent him from being able to finish him off.
  • Breakout Villain: Despite only appearing in two games with a twenty two year gap between them, his memorable personality, tremendous power and compelling backstory has caused him to remain one of the most frequently talked about characters in the series since his debut. Rance X takes note of this, and plays him up in the advertising as much as possible, while also promoting him as the game's Deuteragonist on top of its Big Bad.
  • Butt Monkey: Sort of. Most of his subordinates don't respect him, the woman he loves hates him and he rarely can go a scene without making a fool of himself. That said, he genuinely is a sadistic and terrifying monster, and the games don't try to downplay the gravity of his actions.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Has no problem violently raping women to death but gets tongue-tied just being around Camilla.
  • Compensating for Something: His entire character, from his scary appearance to his overblown arrogance, could be summarized as trying to compensate as much as possible for the fact that he used to be a tiny weakling and is still just as cowardly now as he was back then. In a more traditional sense, the fact that he chose to evolve his body to have eight enormous tentacle penises can't really be viewed as anything other than this.
  • Controllable Helplessness: While the game continues as normal if Kayblis is able to become the Archfiend in Kichikuou Rance, he gains a ridiculous amount of health points (1000 compared to his Fiend form's 30 and the average character's 5-to-10), becomes strong enough to destroy nearly any unit thrown at him in a single attack, instantly disables all but three of the characters that have any ability to damage him at all and takes action on the frontlines every turn as opposed to only fighting when his base is attacked as he normally would. In this state there is really no conceivable way for the player to defeat him without the assistance of cheats, and since defeating him is necessary to progress the story, it is essentially a playable Non-Standard Game Over.
  • Character Development: Surprisingly undergoes this during the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X. After spending the entirety of the game (and his 6,000+ year life) living in fear and paranoia as a cowardly backstabber, he finally finds the courage to fight for something other than his own survival after he realizes that, at his core, all he ever really cared about was becoming stronger than his idol Kkulf-Kkulf. During his final battle with the Fiend Extermination Squad, he fights confidently with everything he has in order to prove himself as the strongest being in the world and chooses to Face Death with Dignity after being defeated rather than beg for his life as he would have before.
  • Crazy Prepared: Has numerous hideouts set up all across the Monster Realm so that he always has somewhere to run away to when the situation gets ugly. He also has an entire room full of Hirami lemons prepared for when he finally captures Miki, allowing him to continuously work towards killing her without fear of her awakening as the Archfiend before he finishes doing so.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Almost all of Kayblis' scenes juxtapose him acting like an overly loud-mouthed moron with him doing something incredibly heinous and effortlessly destroying anyone or anything that tries to stand in his way.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Prior to the events of Rance X, every battle he'd ever participated in was one in his favor. Justified in that he only ever picks battles that he believes he is guaranteed to win.
  • Demoted to Extra: After serving as the Big Bad throughout part 1, Rance X: Part 2 makes him a gag character with no plot relevance.
  • Determinator: Without a doubt his most admirable trait. He spent over 6,000 years carefully training himself from a pathetic weakling to an unstoppable monster through sheer hard work and diligence, all the while carefully planning out the perfect opportunity to seize the position of Archfiend for himself. Even after being reduced to his original strength, losing all of the power and influence in the Monster Realm that he once had and watching Rance defeat the very essence of the Archfiend, he vows to continue training until he surpasses him, no matter how long it takes. Kayblis: "I need to keep training! Even if it takes another 6,000 years! Or 10,000 years! Someday... I'll become stronger than him!!"
  • Deuteragonist: The development team of Rance X made a point of describing him as "the protagonist of the Monster Realm" rather than as the main antagonist. Fittingly, the game focuses almost as much on his backstory and motivation to become the Archfiend as it does on Rance's attempts at defeating him.
  • Dirty Coward: Despite being the strongest Fiend, Kayblis is at heart the same cowardly little Lis that he was at the beginning of his life, and is terrified by the thought of even so much as the possibility of risking his life in any way. As a result, he only ever picks battles that he believes himself to be guaranteed to win, sends his subordinates to do close to all of his dirty work for him and is completely unashamed of begging for his life when he's backed into a corner, even as the Archfiend. He is able to finally overcome this aspect of himself in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X, albeit too late to make much of a difference in defeating humanity.
  • Disc One Final Boss: Both games that feature him as the Big Bad include content after his defeat.
  • The Dreaded: He's known and feared by all but the most ignorant humans (i.e. Rance) as an unstoppable monster. In particular, the time when he rampaged across Zeth for 3 months is remembered as "Kayblis Dark", and is recognized as one of the most terrifying disasters in human history.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Serves as one in the most unflattering way possible towards Camilla. He bends over backwards to attempt to get her to notice him despite her finding him repulsive, and sporadically breaks out in murderous outbursts whenever he gets particularly fed up with her rejection. After said outbursts, he always immediately reverts to his previous "nice guy" routine and apologizes to her profusely, despite having just tried to kill her.
  • Dual Wielding: Fights with two swords.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: His ultimate goal should he become the Archfiend; bring terror to humanity in any way he sees fit. If he's allowed to become the Archfiend in either of his appearances, he almost certainly succeeds.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Hates being called "Kay-chan" by Medusa for this very reason. Humorously, he uses it as his alias when entering the Wargod Tournament in Rance X: Part 2.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: The feeling of overwhelming power and despair that surrounds him is so severe that ordinary beings die just from being near him, and even strong monsters like the Maereeta Squad have to take a special medicine to get close to him without being crippled by fear and weakness.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first scene in Rance X consists of him appearing before several Monster Generals to receive a war report. The Monster Generals, some of the strongest monsters around, feel extreme fear and exhaustion just from being near his powerful aura, with one of them actually dropping dead on the spot as a result of it. After several flowery lines of narration describing his enormous, imposing appearance, he, in his loud, scratchy voice, makes a cringe-worthy joke about miso soup before immediately asking if any of his troops had managed to find "C-C-C-Camilla". This both immediately establishes his character and assures Kichikuou Rance veterans that he's the same as always despite how intimidating promotional materials made him out to be. But then he asks Kaybwan and Kaybnyan how their respective missions are going. When they inevitably tell him that they've made no progress with either, he tells them that it's no big deal and not to push themselves, showing that he's surprisingly good to them.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Admits that he found Jill scary when reminiscing about his time serving under her, but also adds that he believes her to have been the most "proper" person to have ever held the title of Archfiend.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Rance. Both of them are crass, violent, arrogant and childish men who nonetheless manage to become the leaders of their respective races through sheer power. Rance X plays this up even further by redesigning his armor to more closely resemble Rance's. This is driven home after his initial victory against Rance in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes, where they reenact the scene in Kichikuou Rance where Rance kills Kayblis almost word for word, except with their positions reversed.
  • Evil Is Petty: Almost all of Kayblis' screentime shows that, on top of being a remorseless monster who wants to slaughter all of humanity, he's also a thin-skinned and abrasive loser who is almost painfully uncool in every conceivable way.
  • Evil Laugh: Belts these out constantly, to the point of one being heard in both of the songs that are associated with him. Due to being the Evil Counterpart to Rance, who consistently uses "Gahahaha", Kayblis leans more towards "Guhahaha".
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice is apparently simultaneously extremely deep and booming and shrill and obnoxious, and is considered to be terrible to listen to by almost everyone. All the player ever gets to hear of it is a synthetic rendition of his Evil Laugh in the song "Ontology" in Kichikuou Rance and "Showdown" in Rance X.
  • Evolution Power-Up: His species has a natural ability to evolve their bodies over time, which he has made full use of across his existence to transform himself into the strongest Fiend by a very wide margin.
  • Exotic Equipment: Evolved his body to have eight purple, tentacle-like penises.
  • Face Death with Dignity: At the end of the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X, he chooses to accept his death gracefully, showing satisfaction that he was able to go all out for the first time in his life and even goading Rance into finishing him off when the latter mockingly attempts to get him to beg for his life.
  • Fatal Flaw: His cowardice. Rance X makes it very clear that humanity wouldn't have had any kind of chance at defeating the monsters had he just had the backbone to participate in the invasion himself. Instead, his refusal to leave the safety of his lair allows the Human Army to steadily push back the monster forces until it is able to completely prevent his conquest of the world. His crush on Camilla is a lesser one, as he becomes uncharacteristically careless when in her presence, causing him to expose openings in his defenses that he otherwise never would.
  • Final Boss: He's the final opponent in every A-rank ending in Rance X. While battles can potentially occur after the one against him in Kichikuou Rance, he is the final conventional boss enemy that the player fights.
  • Final Boss Preview: The encounter with his doppelganger in Shangri-La in Rance X is essentially a practice round for the actual fight with him.
  • Foil: To Rance. While their surface similarities are obvious, their backgrounds are entirely different, which has caused them to have near total opposite outlooks on life. Kayblis started life as a miserable weakling who lived every day terrified and uncertain about his future, but managed to grow into the strongest Fiend in existence through patience and perseverance. As a result, he's a paranoid wreck who continues to live with extreme caution in spite of having the strength to easily defeat almost anything that could pose a threat to him. In contrast, Rance was born with naturally exceptional strength and is able to grow stronger without putting forth any significant amount of effort, leading to him becoming a carefree and reckless person who almost always leaps before he looks.
  • Fragile Speedster: The playable version of Kayblis in Rance X: Part 2 has two 0 AP attack skills, allowing him a guaranteed attack every turn, but pathetically low health and attack stats.
  • Freudian Excuse: Started life so weak that he lived every day uncertain whether it would be his last or not, causing him to become the fearful coward that he is today. In addition, he witnessed his master and idol Kkulf-Kkulf, a being he thought to be invincible, die by sheer chance at the hands of a nobody after being worn down over hundreds of years of fighting, which resulted in him remaining paranoid about dying even after he became the strongest Fiend in history.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: In the span of a little over 6,000 years, he went from one of the weakest creatures ever created to the most powerful Fiend in existence.
  • Game Face: His eyes lose their pupils and his entire body becomes surrounded by a bloody red tint when he goes all out in a fight, making him look much scarier.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: His ability to weaken and instantly kill all but the absolute strongest individuals just by being near them is reflected in Rance X by rendering all character cards below rank 50 unusable in battle against him. This gets played up even further in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes, which disable cards with ranks below steadily increasing factors of 10 (beginning with 10 and ending with 50) as the party begins to approach his location.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Somewhat. While he was indeed able to go from a weakling to the strongest being on the Continent through hard work, he is still ultimately defeated and surpassed by Rance, a person born with naturally infinite potential.
  • Harmless Villain: Served as one during his early days as a Fiend, where he was too small and weak to pose any kind of threat and instead chose to spend all of his time hiding in fear. Averted by the time of Ssulal's reign, where he was already viewed as being among the strongest Fiends. Becomes one again by the time of Rance X: Part 2, where he is shown to have lost all of the power he had amassed over his previous lifetime and now has to start from square one as a weakling again.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: If he is allowed to kill Miki and become the Archfiend in Kichikuou Rance, he becomes so powerful that it becomes impossible to defeat him without using cheats. Actually averted if he is able to become the Archfiend in Rance X, where it is possible, through careful preparation and a liberal use of New Game+ bonuses, to defeat him legitimately, leading to a short but totally unique gag ending.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He's deeply in love with Camilla, who finds his very existence to be repulsive.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's loud, enthusiastic and angers easily.
  • Humiliation Conga: The events of Rance X: Part 2 essentially consist of a long string of these for him. First, he's revived in his original form without any of his former power. Then, he enters into the Wargod Tournament only to drop out in the first round after getting pitted against a Nikkou-wielding Arms. Then he witnesses his nemesis defeat the source of the Archfiend's power duplicating the power of each of the previous Archfiends, including Kkulf-Kkulf, thereby beating him to his goal of surpassing Kkulf-Kkulf and becoming the strongest being in history.
  • I Call Him "Mister Happy": Refers to his eight penises collectively as his "Hyper Ultra Dynamites" and individually as his "Ultra Weapons". Remind you of anyone?
  • Call a Smeerp a Rabbit: His original form prior to becoming a Fiend was a squirrel, but like most creatures on the Continent with real life counterparts, it looks very little like the species as we know them, instead being a small ball of fluff with stubby arms and legs.
  • The Insomniac: He's so paranoid that he hasn't slept in over 3,000 years, to the point where he's completely immune to Warg's power.
  • Irony: As stated on the Rance X website: The beast feared by all knows fear better than anyone else.
  • Jerkass: Along with being a cruel, violent sadist, he's a generally crude, arrogant and petty guy who's insufferable to be around. As a result, almost nobody likes him, not even his own minions.
  • Joke Character: His character card in Rance X: Part 2 has pathetically low stats, to the point of being close to useless in all but the earliest battles. While he has traces of being a Lethal Joke Character, due to having two 0 AP skills, the lack of character cards available to strengthen factions in part 2 compared to part 1 means that cards with low individual stats are far less useful than they were in the previous campaign. Since post-game content allows the use of all cards from across both parts, he is able to pull his weight considerably more.
  • The Juggernaut: Considered to be nigh-unbeatable even by the other Fiends, to the point where Hornet and Kesselring, the two Fiends vying for the title of second strongest, freely admit that they stand no chance against him in a fight. Ordinary humans can't even be within a few hundred feet of him without dying as a result of having all of their organs fail from the overwhelming sense of fear his presence creates, and even humanity's strongest like Rance, Patton and Rick start to feel weak when they approach him. When the strongest monsters under his command attempt to rebel against him at the end of Rance X, he tears them apart effortlessly in less than 10 seconds despite one of them being noted to be comparable to a Fiend in terms of sheer strength. He becomes even more of one after he becomes the Archfiend, to the point where even Rance is forced to admit that it would be suicide to even attempt to fight him in this state.
    • Word of God revealed that even if Hornet and Kesselring were to team up against him, they would still be unable to defeat him.
  • Kill'Em All: Plans to murder all of his highest-ranking subordinates besides his Apostles and Stroganoff (who are too weak to pose a threat to him) and Camilla (who he intends to take as his queen) after becoming the Archfiend so that he never has to worry about any of them growing strong enough to rise against him.
  • Know When to Fold'Em: Immediately gives up his plans of killing Miki the second she fully awakens to her powers as Archfiend. He also instantly forfeits his fight against Arms in the Wargod Tournament upon realizing that she has Nikkou in her possession.
  • Large and In Charge: He's much bigger than any other Fiend, with the exception of Babolat, and is regarded as the strongest of them all.
  • Large Ham: Almost everything he says is shouted, and he loves giving his attacks names that make liberal use of impressive-sounding adjectives like "super", "ultra" and "ultimate".
  • Laughably Evil: Zig-zagged. While the games never shy away from the fact that he is a sadistic, murderous monster and a genuine threat to everything that stands in his way, scenes that feature him generally play up his humorousness by emphasizing his complete lack of dignity and general patheticness.
  • Leitmotif: His boss theme is named after the title of Rance X, "Showdown."
  • Love Makes You Dumb: He lightens up on his usual Crazy Preparedness whenever Camilla is around. This can be exploited by the Human Army in the "Breakthrough" route of Rance X, where they take advantage of him lightening the security around his castle to throw Camilla a birthday party in order to launch a direct attack on him.
  • Magikarp Power: In-universe, he went from being so weak that, even as a Fiend, he still had to constantly hide just to avoid being killed, to the undisputed strongest Fiend in existence over the course of thousands of years through a combination of rigorous training and his species' natural ability to evolve their bodies to better adapt to their environments.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He has four arms, and, in Kichikuou Rance, gains another two after becoming the Archfiend.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: While he's the strongest being on the Continent in the Archfiend's absence, he's also a Dirty Coward who prefers to delegate his work to his subordinates, and has never actually fought a battle that he believed he had any chance of losing in his life. When the Human Army finally backs him into a corner in Rance X and he realizes that he very well may die, he immediately starts panicking since he's completely unused to ever having to fight for his life.
  • Not So Different: It doesn't take long to realize that he's basically a giant monster version of Rance in terms of general personality. He even notes it himself during his final moments in the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X as a means of convincing Rance to finish him off. Kayblis: "Heh... You... You're kind of similar to me. Are you really the kind of guy who'd show mercy to an enemy?"
  • Not So Similar: That said, his lingering feelings of weakness from the beginning of his life make him fundamentally a totally different person from Rance. Rance rebuffs the above statement by telling him that he'd never give up and allow himself to be killed no matter the circumstances.
  • Odd Friendship: Actually considers Alefgard to be his friend, and enjoys having tea with him. He also takes a surprising shine to Shariela during the climax of Rance X.
  • Orcus on His Throne: His cowardice causes him to refuse to ever take the field unless his victory is absolutely guaranteed, resulting in him sitting out for the majority of both the factional war in the Monster Realm and the Human Realm invasion in Rance X.
  • Paper Tiger: Downplayed. While he genuinely is as powerful as he's made out to be, his cowardly refusal to participate in any kind of battle that may endanger his life has given him a shockingly low threshold for pain, to the point where he starts panicking after sustaining any kind of significant damage. He gets over it during the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X, where he gains the courage to fight all out until his last breath.
  • Passed Over Promotion: Part of his resentment of Gai, Hornet and Miki stems from his outrage over being passed up for the position of Gai's successor as Archfiend despite being his strongest subordinate.
  • Pet the Dog: In his own arrogant way, his taking pity on Shariela's unfortunate circumstances and offering to allow her to stay by his side after he becomes Archfiend was surprisingly kind. Similarly, he's generally pretty quick to forgive his Apostles for their, many, many screw-ups. All three ultimately choose to continue following him after his revival.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Like Rance, he behaves more closely to a hormonal teen than he does a grown man, and is a violent sadist with close to no empathy. It's even more egregious in his case, since he's thousands of years old.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Enjoys violently raping women to death, a trait that he shares with Medusa. If you take too long to rescue Hornet in Rance X, this is exactly how he kills her.
  • Restart At Level One: After getting defeated at the end of Rance X, he's miraculously revived by his Apostles only 15 years later... without the powers he had accumulated over the course of millennia, forcing him to start over from scratch.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: His original form is a puny puffball that is downright adorable, especially when compared to his current appearance.
  • The Rival: While he and Rance only interact a few times, advertisements for Rance X emphasize their respective statuses as each other's destined nemesis.
  • Self-Made Man: Gained all of his power and influence solely through hard work, diligence and careful planning.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Upon learning that the Human Army has completely turned the war around and is now invading his territory in the "Great Invasion of the Monster Realm" route of Rance X, he immediately abandons his castle in order to go into hiding in a secret cave that hadn't been used since Abel's era.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Likes to boast about being an ingenious tactician when in reality he's simply a paranoid coward who leaves most of the actual military commanding to his subordinates.
  • Sole Survivor: The only Fiend created by Kkulf-Kkulf to have survived the war against the dragons due to having spent the entirety of it hiding in terror.
  • The Starscream: Sucked up to Gai throughout his reign only to immediately go against his wishes of making Miki the next Archfiend after his death in order to seize the position for himself. Whenever he references Gai afterwards, he only has bad things to say about him.
  • Stutter Stop: Whenever C-C-C-C-...Camilla is involved.
  • Stylistic Suck: Let's just say he's not the most eloquent guy in the world. Both his love letters to Camilla in Kichikuou Rance and his letter of surrender to Little Princess in Sengoku Rance are cringe-inducingly awkward to read.
  • Sycophantic Servant: Immediately becomes a sniveling Yes-Man in the presence of any Archfiend, regardless of his actual feelings towards them.
  • Taught By Experience: His current personality is the end result of observing and learning from the behaviors of each of the Archfiends throughout their respective reigns, with the notable exception of Ssulal.
    • Kkulf-Kkulf's incredible strength motivated him to become the strongest being in existence.
    • Abel's status as a random nobody who became the Archfiend by chance showed him that even a being as powerful as Kkulf-Kkulf could be defeated by anyone if they weren't careful. Abel being a Dirty Coward also convinced him that his own natural cowardice could be used to achieve great success.
    • Nighcisa and Jill's horrendous oppression of humanity inspired him to perceive humans as little more than toys that exist to entertain monsters.
    • Gai's sudden betrayal of Jill made him realize that he too could claim the title of Archfiend for himself if he struck when the time was right, and also accentuated his paranoia about his subordinates turning against him even further.
  • Thirteen Is Unlucky: Has managed to reach Level 13 by the time of Rance X: Part 2, which he spends all of suffering through a Humiliation Conga.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Despite losing all of his power and influence, Kayblis still has the loyalty and support of both his Apostles and Shariela by the time of Rance X: Part 2 and is the only Fiend who is explicitly stated not to have lost his Blood Soul following the destruction of the Archfiend system, meaning that he still has a chance at fulfilling his dreams of one day surpassing Rance and becoming the strongest being in history.
  • Time Abyss: Over 6,000 years old by the time of the Rance series.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While we only see the end result, he went from a creature at the absolute bottom of the food chain to the most powerful non-divine being in existence other than the Archfiend by the time the series begins as a result of constant training and his species' natural ability to evolve their bodies. In the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X, he is able to finally gain the drive and courage to go all out and fight for more than just his survival. After he's defeated, he shows no fear or regret, and simply asks Rance to finish him off.
  • Turns Red: Upon the final battle against him, when he is realizing he has to fight for his life.
  • Undignified Death: If Rance defeats him earlier than intended in Rance X, he dies pathetically begging for his life. He attempts something similar after he is defeated in Kichikuou Rance.
  • The Un-Reveal: Ho-Raga can potentially reveal Kayblis' weakness to Rance in Rance X. While the player never gets to hear what it is themselves, all attacks will deal slightly more damage to him if he is fought after Rance learns it.
  • Villain Decay: Justified, because of his resurrection in Rance X: Part 2 removing all of his former strength to Restart at Level One.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Has a major freakout during the "From the Sea" and "From the Sky" routes of Rance X after his subordinates attempt a coup against him after becoming fed up with his poor treatment and allow the Human Army into his private quarters. It only gets worse after he realizes that the Maereeta Squad and several of his former subordinate Fiends are cooperating with the Human Army to kill him, leading to him screaming in confusion and frustration about why no one likes him.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Medusa teases him constantly, to his great annoyance, but they both genuinely enjoy the other's company. He trusts her enough to put her in charge of retrieving Camilla from Zeth in Rance X, and she likes him enough to follow through with it. That said, he still intends to kill her off with every other Fiend that isn't Camilla after he becomes Archfiend.
  • Villainous Friendship: Kayblis and Medusa bond over their mutual love of tearing apart humans.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Despite becoming a white-haired Bishōnen after transforming into the Archfiend, his voice and personality are completely unaltered, creating a rather surreal contrast.
  • Weak but Skilled: In Rance X: Part 2, he has the fighting ability of someone with thousands of years of experience and a natural talent for swordsmanship in the body of a wimpy puffball. This is reflected by his character card, which has two very useful 0 AP skills but stats too low to make any real use out of them.
  • World's Strongest Man: Barring the Archfiend, he's the most powerful being alive on the Continent. And since the current Archfiend's power is laying dormant...
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Continues to believe himself to be the plucky underdog hero who rose from obscurity to greatness through hard work even when everyone else views him as an unstoppable and terrifying tyrant. Rance X's advertising plays this up for all it's worth, to the point of including an entire section of the website that essentially retells the general plot of the game from his perspective, with Rance as the Big Bad.
  • Yandere: Acts like a Dogged Nice Guy towards Camilla most of the time, but is fully capable of lashing out at her in a homicidal rage when he gets too fed up with her rejection.

Kesselring

One of the eldest Fiends alive, born during the SS Era. He was originally a female of the Kalar Tribe, but the transformation into a Fiend changed him into a male. He's known among his peers to be one of the most powerful and merciful Fiends, offering shelter to any women who were abused by men. As a result, he harbors an intense hatred towards humanity, and joined the Kayblis Faction despite hating his ways, simply viewing a world ruled by monsters better than one led by humans.

Tropes exhibited by Kesselring include:
  • Affectionate Nickname: "The Lord of the Night", which was given by Ssulal.
  • Affably Evil: Very polite towards his enemies, and in general not prone to pointless violence.
  • Anticlimax Boss: If Rance decides to fight him during the day, he will be weaker that his position implies. You can always try to fight him at night, but prepare for the other end of this trope.
  • Anti-Magic: While in Fog Mode, he cuts Magic Damage by 70%.
  • Anti-Villain: Only joined the Kayblis Faction because he thinks humans are even worse than monsters. When fighting the Hornet Faction in Kichikuou Rance, he tries his best to negociate with them first. He also keeps LeMay in check to prevent him from doing needlessly cruel tactics.
  • Benevolent Boss: He's loved by his maids, who deeply respect him and can go to great lengths to protect him whenever he's in danger. When he is fatally wounded, they all choose to give him back his blood in an attempt to heal him, despite being told this will not be enough to save him.
  • Curse: As a former Kalar, he uses them to slow down the Fiend Extermination Squad to reach him in Rance X, while in turn Pastel Kalar counteracts them with her own power. However, despite his great magical power he isn't particularly skilled with curses.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: He's absent from Rance X: Part 2, suggesting he was killed in battle by Rance.
  • Cruel Mercy: In Rance X, when Rance recklessly attack his castle following Amitos's infection & the kidnapping of Sill & Sheila, Kesselring wrecks him but decides to let him live with the knowledge of his failures.
  • The Dragon: He was originally turned into a Fiend to be Ssulal's protector. Nowadays, he serves as the right-hand of the Kayblis Faction.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: After becoming a female again, she kept some of her masculine mannerisms while interating with women in the Human Alliance, which caused many of them to fall in love with her.
  • Gender Bender: Was originally a female before becoming a Fiend. If Rance manages to defeat him at night, which is very difficult to do on first playthroughs, he resurrects as a woman and joins the Human Alliance, in exchange for the protection of his maids.
  • Haunted Castle: Subverted. His castle looks like one, but is actually a good place to live.
  • High-Class Glass: Reflecting his status as a "Duke", Kesselring also does this in her female form.
  • Honor Before Reason: If you take the refugee route in Helman 2, he will accept to shelter more than 2000 women despite knowing some of them are spies, because most of them have been genuinely abused.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Inverted. Upon joining humanity in Rance X if she's resurrected, she proceeds to ask several women their opinions about Rance. She receives a wide range of responses, from hatred to admiration or even love. From these results, she correctly guesses that Rance, while not a good person by any means, is not actually malicious but an extremely carefree person suffering from Ambiguous Innocence. She decribes him as the greatest opportunist of humanity, blindly following his desire while ruining or saving people's lives on the way.
  • Humans Are Bastards: As a Kalar, he knew the harsh living conditions of his tribe, and his later life as a Fiend didn't do him any better, since he saved so many women of robbers and/or rapists. As a result, he refused to join the Hornet Faction, whose stance is pro-human despite having more in common with her than with Kayblis.
    • If she's resurrected by Rance, she joins him and gives another chance to humanity after seeing what it managed to accomplish under the banner of the Human Alliance.
  • Humble Pie: Downplayed. She was ashamed after being resurrected as a woman by the very man who killed her, but didn't mind as long as her maids were safe.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Upon resurrecting as a female, she suggests Rance to be aware of his surroundings when interacting with her maids, and warns him that she will revert back to a male form and kill him if he crosses the line.
  • I Regret Nothing: During his last moments, he reminisced over his life with his Apostles and died at peace with himself.
  • Logical Weakness: He is weaker during the day, just like a real Vampire.
  • Maid Corps: Some of the refugees he sheltered grown to like him and more often than not, got ascended into Apostles and have a special training as a maid.
  • Marathon Boss: Fighting him during the night is this. In addition to pretty high HPs, he alternates between 2 forms, one where you can't see the healthbars and the problematic one, where he resists Magic to 70%, is immune to status (meaning no Poison can help you this time) and is likely to dodge your attacks. Furthermore, he often heals himself during the fight.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Played with. He looks like a vampire with pointy ears, except he doesn't need blood to survive and his maid Apostles willingly serve him.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He doesn't participate as actively as other Fiends during the 2nd Fiend War, staying in his castle while his apostles and Chupacabra do the work for him.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Whenever someone in his vicinity is in a need of help, he intervenes immediately to save the defenseless. Since most of his maids were raped, it cannot be helped when it comes to his opinion of humanity.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: In Rance X, when he wakes up and find out what Rance has been doing to his maids, he is pissed to say the least.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted, he's one of the nicest fiends of the Kayblis Faction.
  • Token Good Teammate: With Sieg, to the Kayblis Faction.
  • Überwald: He lives in the Bram Castle, located in the Transylvania Forest.
  • Undying Loyalty: Along with Galtia, he dearly remembers Ssulal, his first master and Archfiend. If both of them are recruited in Rance X, they meet in private in the anniversary of Ssulal’s death in order to reminisce about their departed master.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Ashen. When he turns back into a woman, the color is mixed between Ashen and the trademark blue hair of the Kalar.
  • Zombie Apocalypse : He is able to create a disease called the Chupacabra which make people go berserk when infected by it. He infects Rolex and later Amitos, when she took a hit for Rance.

Silky Littleraisin

The youngest of the Four Dread Fiends, born during the late GI Era. She was a human warrior who managed to reach the Archfiend Gai's throne room with sheer determination and skill. On the verge of death upon reaching the Archfiend, she asked him to free humanity from slavery, which he accepted in exchange for her transformation into a Fiend. Like Kesselring, she's not prone to violence and prefers to avoid conflict, unless she's forced to, even though she is one of the most powerful Fiends. By the events of the series, she joined the Hornet Faction to preserve peace once more, and out of friendship for her.

Tropes exhibited by Silky include:
  • Ambiguously Brown: She has a slightly dark skin tone.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She lost one arm as a human during her storming of the Archfiend's Castle in the beginning of the GI Era.
  • Benevolent Precursors: The woman who gave up her humanity to help it rebuild itself, being one of its most influencial figures despite not being directly involved in human affairs.
  • The Assimilator: After the defeat of the Hornet Faction in Kichikuou Rance, she goes into hiding and waits for opportunities to consume the Blood Souls of the deceased Fiends.
  • Determinator: When she was a human, she stormed the Archfiend Castle alone and was mortally wounded as a result, even losing an arm to get to the Archfiend's room.
    • During Kichikuou Rance, she managed to consume five Blood Souls to gain enough power to beat Kayblis. Despite her defeat, she managed to bring him to near-death.
    • Showed once again in Rance X when she cleaves her way to Lia's room through the entire Leazas Castle and Royal Guard, until she was trapped by an anti-Fiend seal, only to pull a The Gloves Come Off by throwing her armor Little to get rid of it. She finally goes down after a fierce fight.
  • The Gloves Come Off: By throwing her armor, she loses all of her defense for a swift and powerful offensive. It also allows her to escape traps or seals.
  • The Greatest Story Never Told: She is single-handedly responsible from freeing humanity after a millenia of slavery, yet forgotten by everyone and her heroic deeds were never known, except by royal families.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: If she consumes five Blood Souls in Kichikuou Rance, she pulls one on Kayblis, leaving him almost dead to help humanity deal the finishing blow.
  • Hidden Depths: Aside for her untold achievements as a human, Silky was known to be a fan of baseball, even organizing matches between Fiends as a hobby.
  • Hot-Blooded: More prone to listen to her emotions and as a result, she comes out as short-tempered at times. It is shown in the series when she refused to surrender and consumed several Blood Souls to help humans, all for Hornet's sake. The same is seen in Rance X, when she storms the Leazas Castle all alone.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: When the human mortality rate hits 30%, Arios proceeds to impale her due to her allegiance to the Archfiend. His strength also allows him to break through Little.
  • Little Miss Badass: The shortest humanoid around, yet one of the Four Dread Fiends.
  • Mighty Glacier: When wearing Little. While Chaos and Nikkou can break the Invincibility Field, dealing damage is another pair of gloves. However,Escudo cut through it like a knife through butter.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Excluding kids, Silky is the second shortest character ever seen in the series, and she's a Dread Fiend.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. She's not villainous at all, and eventually joins the Human Alliance in Rance X.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to La Hawzel's Blue.
  • Stone Wall: While wearing Little, her defense is near impenetrable but she is lacking in offense.
  • Stripperific: Under her large armor, Silky wears very little clothing in her appearance in Rance X, barely hiding her skin.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Light blue.

Camilla

The second eldest Fiend next to Kayblis. She was known as the Queen Dragon during the AV Era, and was the sole female Dragon alive at the time. She was then kidnapped by the Archfiend Abel who turned her into a Fiend, effectively ending any hope for the Dragons to have children. Since then, she's also been the target of a unwanted admirer: Kayblis. Finding him disgusting, she turned down every attempt to enter into a relationship, and grew to hate him. The last known attempt was during the LP Era, when she invented an excuse to escape from him: should she manage to conquer the Kingdom of Zeth, he would leave her alone, but should she fail, she will live in his castle for the rest of her life. The whole situation started the events of Rance VI, and the only reason she joined the Kayblis Faction was because of Hornet, whom she hates even more.

She launched in Rance VI an invasion of Zeth helped by fellow Fiends Sieg and Seizel, which was quite successful until Rance got Chaos, and proceed to push them back, killing Sieg and incapacitating Seizel in the process. She ultimately goes down after a fierce fight against Rance and was sealed in Zeth afterwards.

Tropes exhibited by Camilla include:
  • Action Girl: Camilla wipes the floor with Rance's entire party in Rance VI.
  • Better to Die Than Be Killed: During the final battle in Kichikuou Rance, this is her final fate. If Rance manages to invade her castle, she will kill herself to save her Apostle Reincock from death and at the same time, escaping a life of servitude under Rance. Otherwise, she will be abducted by Kayblis and is given a last chance: to be his bride or die. She choose the latter, refusing his proposal a last time.
  • Big Bad: Of Rance VI.
  • Condemned Contestant: Inverted in Rance VI. After seizing Ragnarokarc, the capital of Zeth, she makes her prisoners take part in Deadly Games where they need to entertain her to be kept alive.
  • Distressed Damsel: She was kidnapped by the Archfiend Abel at the time where Dragons reigned as the Protagonist Race, and was turned into a Fiend, causing her fellow Dragons to go ballistic and begin the Last War against Abel.
  • Eyes of Gold: Downplayed. She didn't become a villain by choice (being kidnapped by the Archfiend Abel) and most of her actions come from her desire of freedom.
  • Enemy Mine: Downplayed. If Medusa is killed early, she is liberated from her prison in Rance X, but doesn't actively participate in the war, instead being kept in check by Rance's personal guard, and spending time with Reset.
    • If she's taken by Kayblis however, near the end of the final battle, she turns him down again and confronts him in a last fight which greatly weakens him. Afterwards, she claims leadership over the Monster Realm until a new Archfiend appears... And it ends up being Rance. Three years later, she leads a great rebellion against him but it ends in failure.
  • Ephebophile: In Kichikuou Rance, one scene shows she's into teenagers, preferably androgynous. Also seen in Rance VI, where her Apostles are mostly young men.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She genuinely cares about the well-being of her Apostles, even though she doesn't talk a lot with them. The death of Shichisei and Reincock in Rance VI hits her hard.
  • Evil vs. Evil: If she's freed by Kayblis in Rance X, she turns on him near the end of the war to help humanity.
    • By Rance X: Part 2, she is entangled in a new civil war between several factions trying to take down the Archfiend Rance.
  • Eye Scream: She loses her left eye during the final battle of Rance VI, and only got it back several years later by the time of Rance X.
  • Final Boss: Of Rance VI.
  • Implacable Woman: Despite being all alone in the final battle of Rance VI, she actually overpowered Rance and his elite squad up until an unexpected help from Abert allowed Rance to take her left eye. And after being defeated once, she flees into the depths of the Maginot Line and defends herself quite fiercely, still able to take Rance and Sill down.
  • Lady of War: On top of being a commander of the Monster Army, she's one of the most powerful beings of the Continent while keeping a graceful and feminine attitude.
  • Leitmotif: For the final battle against her in Rance VI, "Combat 17 Times."
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Her fate in Rance X involves choosing between Kayblis or the Human Alliance led by Rance. If she's freed by the latter, she chooses to stay with them only because the other outcome would be worse for her, with some push from Reset Kalar.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She was so fast that even Rance couldn't lay a finger on her until she lost an eye. And after getting defeated by his party, she still gave a hard fight in a ultimate confrontation against Rance and Sill.
  • Morton's Fork: Rance X involves her liberation from her prison, by either Kayblis, whom she didn't want to see ever again if Medusa is alive, or the Human Alliance (which means being around Rance) later in the war, which is very slightly better for her.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Mostly seen in a human form, and uses shadow powers instead of breathing fire or acid.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She's not seen smiling even once.
  • Put on a Bus: At the end of Rance VI, she was kept captive in a high-security prison, with a sealing spell immobilizing her for the rest of her life. It is implied she will be free at the given time, granted in Rance X.
  • Status Buff Dispel: She can use a spell of Black Magic which allows her to remove the buffs of her enemies.
  • Take a Third Option: When cornered in her castle in Kichikuou Rance, Rance attempts to coerce her into becoming one of his wives or else he'll kill her Apostle Reincock. She chose to kill herself, escaping his grasp and at the same time saving the life of Reincock.
  • Tsundere: Downplayed. While she doesn't work for the Human Alliance, she instead spends time with Reset Kalar, and justifies it by saying she wants her to learn the meaning of fear, but she's actually quite nice with her.
  • The Quiet One: Camilla spends most of the time silent, and only talk when necessary or whenever she gets interested in something.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: In Kichikuou Rance.

Hornet Faction

Satella

One of the youngest Fiends, along with Hornet, born 150 years before the beginning of the series, she was a young human female chosen by the Archfiend Gai to be the playmate and friend of his daughter Hornet. She was then changed into a Fiend along with Hornet, and during the Little Princess Era, she joined the Hornet Faction during the civil war between the Fiends. She first appeared in Rance III / 03 along with fellow Fiends Aizel and Noce, helping Helman to invade Leazas and capturing the princess Lia Parapara Leazas in the hopes of getting the sword Chaos, giving the upper hand to the Hornet Faction in the civil war. After her defeat and her first encounter with Rance, she swore to kill him someday for revenge, not admitting her true feelings for him.

Tropes exhibited by Satella include:
  • Adaptational Badass: In Kichikuou Rance, the first game featuring playable Fiends, she is by far the weakest one and most of her attacks don't hurt them. By the time of Rance X, while still being one of the weakest Fiends, she is able to pull her weight considerably more.
  • Adaptational Heroism: By comparing Kichikuou Rance and Rance X, which both details the events of the Second Fiend War, Satella got much nicer than her former counterpart, notably being an genuine ally of the Human Alliance and much more friendly with humanity overall.
  • The Alleged Boss: Becomes one by Rance X by making Rance promise to be her Apostle after the war in order to cope for Isis' death years ago. Naturally, she starts boasting about how she made the leader of humanity into her personal servant, even though no one is fooled.
  • Anti-Villain: In Rance 03, Satella and Aizel are only helping Helman invade Leazas to find the whereabouts of the sword Chaos, and help the Hornet Faction turn the tables against the Kayblis Faction.
  • Anti-Hero: Rance Quest cements her as this after travelling with Miki, and after acknowledging her love of Rance who helped her on a quest.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Sill's Betty. While Sill is a gentle, sweet girl openly in love with Rance, Satella is a Fiend, more hot-tempered and a Tsundere who doesn't admit being in love with Rance until Rance Quest. Furthermore, she's also a potential Love Interest in two contrasting games along with Sill:
    • In Kichikuou Rance, if Sill is dead, she confesses her love for Rance and her wish to have him as her Archfiend, perfectly willing to kill Miki in cold blood.
    • In Rance X, she befriends Sill, and while she still acts cocky, she's actively fighting alongside humanity thanks to Miki's kindness.
  • Character Development: Satella went from a ruthless Fiend who joined Hornet only out of friendship for her and treating humans like dirt in Rance III / Rance 03, to a surpringly (unassuming) friendly person and ally for humanity in Rance Quest and Rance X, where she acts as the Ms. Exposition in the Second Fiend War.
  • Childhood Friends: She was raised as a Fiend alongside her sole friend Hornet.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Has Lia and Noah tortured and raped in Rance 03 to get information about the sword Chaos.
  • Cry Cute: After seeing Sill alive again and Rance back to his senses at the climax of Rance X: Part 2, she ends up crying so hard, Sill had to wipe her tears.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red hair with red eyes.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being entirely clothed in black, she's more of an Anti-Villain, then Anti-Hero by the time of Rance Quest.
  • The Dragon: To Archfiend Rance in Part 2.
  • Dope Slap: El can do this to her after the Blood Memories absorb all the demon blood from the fiends. She actually felt that, which the rest of the fiends found out that their Invicibility Field is gone.
  • Fiery Redhead: Red-headed and short-tempered.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite working for the Hornet Faction, she thought of humans as lower creatures, and only joined it out of friendship for Hornet. In Rance 03, she is quite cruel to other humans unrelated to her, as she was raised in a environment without any humans around. She was seen burning down villages and resorts to kidnapping and torture to achieve her goals, even though she doesn't like it. By Rance Quest however, it's toned down and she turns out to be quite decent with other humans.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's easily prone to anger, made worse if Rance is around.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Seeing Sill alive again reduces her to tears and can't say a proper sentence on how glad she sees Sill again.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: When she and Rance decide to kill Miki to gain her power in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Leitmotif: The aptly named "Satella", for her first appearance in Rance III and it's remake, "Satella has come!"
  • Love Makes You Evil: An alternative ending in Kichikuou Rance shows her confess her feelings to Rance, and her wish to have him as her Archfiend. They then kill a defenseless Miki to make Rance the new Archfiend.
  • Ms. Exposition: In Rance X, she acts as one to the Human Alliance regarding the combat abilities of the Fiends they are fighting against.
  • Punch Clock Hero: In Kichikuou Rance. While she is working for Rance, it's only because Hornet told her to protect Miki and solely out of friendship for her.
  • Sensory Overload: Her very sensitive body is her main weakness and can cripple her fighting ability, but actually touching her is easier said than done, save for Rance.
  • Third-Person Person: Likely due to her young age by Fiend standards and her status as a Chuunibyou.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She actually breaks Nikkou, a weapon she's supposed to be weak against, and is able to summon multiple guardians at once.
  • Took a Level In Kindness: After learning from humans following her travelling with Miki and Kentarou, she starts being nicer to them, especially in Rance X.
  • Tsundere: Towards Rance, whenever she mentions killing him. Overall, she displays it to other people whom she is acquainted with.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Rance after he becomes an Archfiend.
  • Unwitting Pawn: She and Aizel were tricked by Noce into stealing Chaos, who was in fact sealing Jill, the immortal and 5th Archfiend.
  • Weak but Skilled: She's one of the weakest Fiends around, only having a basic mastering of Magic and a whip to handle physical fights. However, she has the unique Skill of "Guardian Crafting" which enables her to create stone guardians as Lesser Apostles, and capable of defeating the strongest humans, nay sometimes giving a hard fight to other Fiends.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Satella can use all means at her disposal when it comes to helping the Hornet Faction. Including torture and kidnapping on Noah Hakobune and Sill Plain in Rance 03. After acting as a bodyguard to Miki, the Extremist part is dropped.
  • Whip It Good: Her main weapon.

La Hawzel

Along with her sister La Seizel, La Hawzel was a single entity known as "La Vaswald", a 2nd Class God. She was split into two angels, and then turned into Fiends during the JL Era. Once the LP Era began, she joined the Hornet Faction, respecting the Archfiend Gai's last will. Along with Satella, she traveled some time with Kurusu Miki and her childhood friend Ogawa Kentarou in LP 0003, protecting her from the attacks of the Kayblis Faction. They were then defeated by the current Hero, Arios Theoman, but he couldn't bring himself to kill an innocent girl. Some time after, she and Satella parted ways with the young couple to return to Hornet's side.

Tropes exhibited by La Hawzel include:
  • Badass Bookworm: She is a fan of the writer Don Dossky and often reads his books under the guise of "Haw Zel". Overall, she spends most of a time reading a book and attempting to share her passion with others, to no avail.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Uses a huge flamethrower when fighting.
  • Firing One-Handed: Despite being as tall as a rocket launcher, she can use her weapon with one hand.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Responsible to her sister's Foolish.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: When her generals are the target of Warg's manipulations in Kichikuou Rance and want to have their way with her, she willingly lose her virginity to them in order to avoid mutiny at all costs.
  • Hidden Depths: She's a huge fan of Don Dossky's books, which is exploited in Rance X.
  • I Call It "Vera": "Tower of Fire."
  • Nerves of Steel: La Hawzel is always calm and collected, even in the verge of defeat.
  • Our Angels Are Different: She harbors horns, is not actually hostile to humans and wears mostly normal and red clothes. And she has a fire-launcher.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When disguising as a human, she uses the not so clever name of "Haw Zel".
  • Polar Opposite Twins: To her sister/twin La Seizel. She is a Proper Lady while her sister is an Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to the Red Oni of La Seizel, the irony being her sister wearing blue instead of La Hawzel's red.
  • Shadow Archetype: To La Seizel, because she possess all of the good traits that the former doesn't have.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: La Hawzel is a graceful and demure person. Among her peers, she is considered the most merciful and gentle-spirited amongst all the Fiends, even in the Hornet Faction. And she's a Fiend, perfectly able to protect herself.
  • Synchronization: Whenever La Hawzel feels something of high intensity (like pain or pleasure), her sister will feel it too.
  • Twincest: In ''Kichikuou Rance, should Rance manage to reunite her with her sister, the two are never seen apart and are sleeping together, looking like a "lesbian couple" in his own words.

Aizel

Aizel was a human turned into a Fiend at an unknown date during the JL Era. His looks greatly resemble those of a vampire, has the nobleminded, demure behavior expected of those, and possesses three Apostles: Garnet, Sapphire and Topaz. A kind man at heart, he choose to join the Hornet Faction during the war involving the Fiends in the LP Era. In the series, he appeared in Rance III / 03 along with fellow Fiends Satella and Noce, helping Helman to invade Leazas and capturing the princess Lia Parapara Leazas in the hope to get the sword Chaos, giving the upper hand to the Hornet Faction in the civil war. In the midst of the battefield, he encountered the human mage Shizuka Masou and fell in love with her, although she rejected his offer to make her into one of his Apostles. He was defeated by Rance at the end of 03 and has gone missing since then.

Tropes exhibited by Ithere include:
  • Affably Evil: Unlike Satella and Noce, he's actually very nice to his enemies and dislikes violence. He even proposed to Shizuka to take her under his wing as a Apostle when Jill gets released by Noce.
  • Anti-Villain: In Rance 03, Satella and Aizel are only helping Helman invade Leazas to find the whereabouts of the sword Chaos, and help the Hornet Faction turn the tables against the Kayblis Faction.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Aizel mainly uses Darkness-based Magic and brainwashing powers to fight.
  • Benevolent Boss: As seen by his protective and caring personality, especially when he doesn't punish his Apostles for their failures. They deeply love him, to the point they willingly give their blood to their master, despite knowing it will kill them.
  • Black Magic: His main skill.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: One of his main weapons during the war against Leazas, and shared by his Apostles.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Aizel wears black clothes all over, but belongs to the Hornet Faction.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Upon seeing Shizuka naked, he gets distracted enough to get stabbed in the back.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Courtesy of Rance who stabbed him with Chaos while he was distracted by a naked Shizuka Masou.
  • Leitmotif: "Aizel" in Rance III and it's remake.
  • Nice Guy: As expected of a member of the Hornet Faction, even to his enemies.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Is on the side of humans, is ultimately a good person and has servants who follow him out of loyalty and love.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Downplayed. He's in love with Shizuka, who is also the target of Rance, however she mostly hates him.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the original Rance III, he was reduced into a Blood Soul, but the 03 remake ends with his survival, being MIA.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Towards Shizuka.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He and Satella were tricked by Noce into stealing Chaos, who was in fact sealing Jill, the immortal and 5th Archfiend.

Meglass

An alien belonging to the species called "Horus", who was turned into a Fiend in the AV Era, making him over 4000 years old. He was originally part of a extraterrestrial crew from a spaceship which crashed down north of Helman, in the snowy plains, making him one of the rare living beings who is not part of the Continent created by Rudrathaum. During his wandering in space, he was a mechanic with surprisingly good skills at fighting, and once their ship crashed down to the Continent, he tirelessly defended it while everyone else was kept into cryogenic sleep. His actions were noticed by the Archfiend Abel, who offered him to be his Fiend in exchange of the lives of his crew. He was then forced to abandon the other Horus and grew distant to the violence of the Monster Realm, indifferent to the other Fiends, Archfiends and successors onwards.

By the time of the GI Era, he was genuinly surprised by the Archfiend Gai who allowed the non-monster races to live in peace, and joined the Hornet Faction after his death, not wanting to revert to the previous eras of slaughter and unrest. He only appeared in Kichikuou Rance with Satella, and was tasked by Hornet to protect Miki from any threat. He is also mentioned several times in Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by Meglass include:
  • The Aloner: Meglass mostly keeps to himself, and rarely engages anyone, even the other members of the Hornet Faction, in conversation.
  • And I Must Scream: His existence as a Fiend could be seen as this. In order to protect the rest of his colony, he allowed himself to become the Archfiend's slave, in the process committing himself to a life of spreading chaos and carnage throughout the world despite his own dislike of fighting. He has since spent over four thousand years in essential isolation, unable to connect with anything on the Continent due to being an alien, and has become painfully lonely as a result. Knowing this about him, his silence starts to make a lot more sense.
  • Anti-Villain: Only became Abel's servant to protect his people and seemingly avoided participating in conflicts whenever possible when working under the Archfiend.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: While he's mostly a heroic character, he is willing to take advantage of Miki's grief after accidentally killing Kentarou on certain routes in Kichikuou Rance in order to convince her to become the Archfiend. A surprisingly conniving move for an otherwise purely good character.
  • Bus Crash: Offed in the final moments of the factional war shortly before the beginning of Rance X.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: His knowledge of all of Abel's old hideouts, which he passed on to Hornet, is what allows the United Human Army to track down Kayblis' location in the "Great Invasion of the Monster Realm" route of Rance X.
  • Covert Pervert: Possibly. While he has no problem with letting Lia ride on his back while he flies in Kichikuou Rance, he bluntly responds "No men." when Rance asks if he'd let him do that same.
  • Crutch Character: Has shades of this in Kichikuou Rance. His "Mach Speed" technique is guaranteed to bypass the enemy army and hit the commander directly for 1 point of damage, which is a major boon during the early game skirmishes with Camilla, Seizel, Lei and Sieg since all four instantly flee upon taking damage. By the time the player goes to war with the Monster Realm, however, its damage output is too low to be particularly effective for actually killing enemy Fiends, making him much less useful.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: His fighting style relies entirely on his speed, so he tends to run into trouble when pitted against foes who can counter it.
  • Demoted to Extra: Goes from one of the few playable Fiends in Kichikuou Rance to an unseen Posthumous Character in Rance X.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Killed Offscreen with very little fanfare before Rance X. While the game does include scenes discussing him, you have to go out of your way to find most of them and only one of them has any kind of significance to the plot.
  • Early Installment Weirdness: He looks nothing like any of the Horus shown in Rance X, though this can be Handwaved as a side effect of his transformation into a Fiend. Unused concept artwork of his Rance X design shows him generally resembling the other Horus more closely.
  • The Faceless: His apparent face is shadowed, with only a pair of red eyes being visible.
  • Flying Brick: He's the fastest thing on the Continent while also having the enhanced strength of a Fiend.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Gets along better with birds than he does with the other intelligent creatures of the Continent. And even though he's not the most social person he's still perfectly happy giving flying piggyback rides to any girls interested in doing so.
  • Genius Bruiser: Overlaps with Informed Ability. As a former Horus engineer, he possessed a technical knowledge far beyond anyone on the Continent besides Pi-R. On top of this, he was a strong fighter even before becoming a Fiend, as he was able to defend his colony from monsters singlehandedly for a very long time.
  • Guest Star Party Member: Serves as a variation of this in Kichikuou Rance. While he and Satella are recruited early on, both of them refuse to fight anything other than other Fiends and monsters and thus can for much of the game only be used to defend against Camilla's capture squad in brief skirmishes. It's only in the late game when the player enters war with the Monster Realm that the two can be used in regular combat, and even then they still refuse to explore any dungeons.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The origin of his becoming a Fiend essentially amounts to this: for the sake of protecting his colony he gave up his freedom and became the Archfiend's slave. He later pulls another one at the end of the factional war when he sacrifices himself to momentarily hold off the Kayblis Faction and buy Hornet time to escape.
  • Hidden Depths: Has several due to his status as The Quiet One:
    • He was a mechanic for a hyper-advanced alien race prior to becoming a Fiend, and so possesses a technical knowledge comparable to Pi-R.
    • When describing his personality, Terra claimed that he was a very energetic and friendly person not at all like how he generally appears to be.
    • The speech that he gives to Miki to convince her to become the Archfiend in Kichikuou Rance reveals him to be surprisingly eloquent when he wants to be.
    • He can apparently speak bird, and seems to be quite a bit chattier when doing so.
  • Hit and Run Tactics: His main strategy while fighting is to hit his foes fast and hard and then flee before they can strike back.
  • Informed Ability:
    • Is stated to have a Level 1 Skill in Sword Combat, but since he only uses his whole body to fight, it's never seen in the games proper.
    • We only ever learn of his engineering skills secondhand, as he never suggests any kind of technical prowess during his screentime in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Insectoid Aliens: His former species consists of these, though he himself doesn't particularly look like one, making this something of an Informed Species.
  • Last of His Kind: From a technical standpoint in Kichikuou Rance. While he's no longer a Horus genetically, he is the sole member of his species to maintain knowledge of their culture prior to crash-landing on the Continent, as the rest of the Continent's Horus population has devolved into tribalism. Averted in the canonical timeline, where the rest of the surviving members of his colony are merely in a cryogenic sleep.
  • Martial Pacifist: He dislikes conflict and only fights to protect what he cares about.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: While his silence may cause him to appear cold and unfriendly, he's a compassionate guy through and through. During the short time when she met him, Miracle assumed he was a jerk since he kept avoiding her when the rest of the Hornet Faction was much more accommodating.
  • Never Found the Body: The status of his Blood Soul is never gone into in Rance X. Did the Kayblis Faction capture it? Was it lost in the confusion of the war? Who knows.
  • Nice Guy: Terra's description of him paints him in this light. And from what we get to see of him in Kichikuou Rance, this seems to be accurate.
  • Not So Stoic: He's clearly peeved when the Mach Piyo beats him in a race during one of his conversation events in Kichikuou Rance. He also hates Kayblis so much that he can't help but dramatically shout his name when in his presence.
  • Odd Friendship: His sole companion as a Fiend is the Mach Piyo, a tiny yellow bird that is the only thing capable of beating him in a race.
  • The One Guy: Since Aizel and Noce are offed before the Hornet Faction is formally introduced, he's the sole male Fiend in it for most of the series.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Flew into space and disarmed a satellite laser that Pi-R built during the time of Rance Quest. We only hear about it secondhand from Satella.
  • Posthumous Character: Mentioned at various points throughout Rance X, but dies before being able to actually appear in it.
  • The Quiet One: Even moreso than Camilla. The number of scenes where he says anything at all can be counted on one hand, and the number of scenes where he says more than a handful of words at a time can be counted on a few fingers.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. While his red eyes are his only visible features, he's a pretty docile guy.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Satella's Red in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Sacrificial Lion: His death marks the final nail in the coffin for the Kayblis Faction's victory in the factional war.
  • Satellite Character: In Kichikuou Rance he mostly serves as the "other" Fiend accompanying Kentarou and Miki while Satella does the vast majority of the talking for the both of them. We learn a bit more about him in Rance X, but by that point he's already dead.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Gave his life to buy Hornet time to escape when it became clear that their army had lost the factional war, but Hornet still ended up getting captured shortly afterwards.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Implied to have been this with Terra, the queen of his colony. Before he became a Fiend, the two were extremely close but unable to enter into a relationship due to their differing social standings. After becoming a Fiend, Meglass spent thousands of years apart from Terra and the rest of his colony in order to protect them, only to be killed shortly before they were finally freed from their cryogenic sleep.
  • The Stoic: His lack of apparent face features implies this, but he's actually a compassionate and loyal person. This causes him to be misunderstood as an indifferent and cold individual.
  • Terse Talker: On the rare occasions when he actually speaks he tends to say only a few words.
  • Undying Loyalty: To both his colony and the rest of the Hornet Faction. He gladly sacrifices his life and happiness for both. Notably, he's one of the few Fiends to explicitly not have this towards the Archfiend that created him, as he completely hated Abel's guts.

Noce

Noce was one of the latest Dragons alive, hiding himself for millenia, and was finally found by the Archfiend Jill during the JL Era. His natural strength as a Earth Dragon and his subsequent transformation into a Fiend made him a very powerful opponent, enough to be one of the Four Dread Fiends. His loyalty for Jill was so great that even after her sealing, he began to think of a plan to release her, faking loyalty to the next Archfiend Gai, and quitting the Four Dread Fiends to keep a low profile. Since then, he backstabbed several allies who could get in his way, like fellow Fiends Lexington and Burksham. The final step of his plan began in the LP Era, when he joined the Hornet Faction, because they would be easier to manipulate. He appeared in Rance 03 as the mastermind behind the invasion of Leazas, cooperating with the broken Helman Prince Patton Misnarge, who was yet again another pawn. Under the guise of finding the sword Chaos to help the Hornet Faction, his real goal was to unseal Jill and making her the regent Archfiend.

After succeeding in freeing her, he acted as his bodyguard and helped her regaining her former strength up until his defeat by the Leazas Liberation Army, and he's ultimately consumed back by Jill, rendering him Deader Than Dead.

Tropes exhibited by Noce include:
  • Adaptive Ability: His skin hardens in response to attacks. The more damage he gets, the stronger his skin.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: His dragon form is massive enough to make him look like a mountain, and he can create earthquakes simply by stomping on the ground.
  • Anti-Villain: Subverted. He joined the Hornet Faction for his own benefit.
  • Badass Mustache: Sports a massive mustache to emphasize his threatening looks.
  • Beard of Evil: He has rather impressive facial hair, and he's one of the few truly villainous Fiends.
  • Big Bad: Of Rance 03.
  • The Chessmaster: He successfully manipulates Satella, Aizel and Helman as a whole into invading Leazas, in order to get Chaos.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Every character he allied with ends up betrayed by him or he has them killed by enemy hands.
  • Deader Than Dead: His Blood Soul is consumed back by Jill at the end of Rance 03.
  • The Dragon: To Jill, alongside Gai during the JL Era, and in the present day in Rance III/03.
  • Evil Old Folks: Easily one of the eldest beings alive, and evil.
  • Full-Body Disguise: His human clothes perfectly hide his weight and his rocky features, only his nose and mustache is visible.
  • Leitmotif: Gets his own boss theme as "Noce" in Rance III, which gets replaced by "Attack on Dragon!" in Rance 03.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Insanely strong, durable, tall, and fast due to his dragon heritage.
  • Nigh Invulnerability: His hard to break skin is already a problem by itself, and then he became a Fiend, complete with regeneration abilities and Invincibility Field.
  • Sobriquet: Known as the Wargod Destroyer during the First Fiend War.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Noce was in love with Jill, who didn't return his affections even once, only having Gai as her lover. His love and loyalty for her lasted for a thousand year, and even after her release in Rance 03, she barely acknowledges him.

Kayblis Faction

Sieg

Sieg was a former monster known as a Panaclonic, whose ability is to copy the appearance of any living being and its powers. He was turned into a Fiend by the Archfiend Jill and his transformation gave him a somehow humanoid form, with longer arms and legs. Since he was born into the JL Era, he thinks of humans as a subordinate race to monsters, and joined the Kayblis Faction by default, even though he finds him vulgar and brutish. However, he's one of the nicest Fiends amongst them all, known for his integrity and never come back on his word, often making himself a target of abuse by others. He appears in Rance VI alongside fellow Fiend Camilla and Seizel, invading the Kingdom of Zeth. He mainly uses his Apostle Aurora for covert operations and to sabotage it from within, prefering leaving the direct combat to Camilla and her army.

Tropes exhibited by Sieg include:
  • Adaptational Badass: He's considerably more formidable in Rance VI than he is in Kichikuou Rance, though he's still Laughably Evil.
  • Affably Evil: Considers humans to be inferior to monsters, but is still nothing less than courteous towards them at all times. This is weaponized against him throughout his appearances.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Rance severs one of his arms off by dropping Chaos on it during Rance VI. He later regrows it through the power of rage.
  • Anticlimax: His defeat in Rance VI, which follows a rather difficult battle against him, amounts to Rance tricking him into transforming into a caterpillar and then squishing him with Chaos.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Wears a sharp suit at all times.
  • Benevolent Boss: Extremely kind and caring towards Aurora, and never fails to praise her successes or forgive her failures.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: After Rance fails to reciprocate any of his attempts at being a Worthy Opponent, Sieg resorts to using trickery of his own to defeat him. In his words, he'll only ever fight on even ground with his opponents, no matter how underhanded they may be.
  • Breakout Villain: Partly due to his status as a Likable Villain and spillover from fans of Aurora, Sieg has become a rather popular character within the fanbase, to the point of making into the top 50 of the male character popularity poll of Rance X despite not appearing in the game at all.
  • Butt Monkey: Sieg is not taken seriously as a villain in either of his appearances, with both largely consisting of him being made a fool of before being unceremoniously defeated. To make matters worse, he's the only Fiend other than Noce and Xavier to be permanently rendered Deader Than Dead over the course of the series.
  • Cane Fu: His main form of attack in his normal form is whacking his enemies with his cane.
  • Cartoon Creature: His appearance is pretty much indescribable. Rance even calls him a "big yellow thing" when they meet in Rance VI.
  • Cast From Lifespan: If he uses his transformation ability to replicate the power of a being stronger than himself, he is forced to draw power directly from his lifeforce, preventing him from maintaining their form for very long.
  • Continuity Nod: The battle against him in Rance VI features him transforming into both Thoma and Jill, marking the first appearance by both since Rance III.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: After spending most of his screentime in Rance VI being made a fool of, his momentarily channeling the power of Archfiend Jill to become a Hope Less Boss Fight certainly comes as a surprise.
  • Cultured Badass: Really wants to be seen as one. Most can't get past his goofy appearance to take notice.
  • Deader Than Dead: His Blood Soul is overwritten by Abert during Rance VI, completely removing Sieg's soul from existence.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After having his attempts at being a Friendly Enemy consistently foiled by Rance, Sieg resorts to using dirty tricks of his own.
  • The Dragon: As the second-in-command of the Human Realm Invasion Force, he serves as this to Camilla in Rance VI.
  • Empathic Shapeshifter: Gains the ability to look into the hearts of his enemies in order to replicate the strength and appearance of whatever they fear most in Rance VI. While he initially puts it to great effect by reading Patton's heart to transform into Thoma and Sel's heart to transform into Jill, Rance exploits it after figuring out the ability by thinking that his greatest fear are caterpillars, transforming him into a harmless insect.
  • Extreme Doormat: Puts up with a ridiculous amount of abuse for the sake of maintaining his image as a gentleman, to the point of waiting in a single spot for several days simply because someone asked him to wait for them there.
  • Fantastic Racism: Downplayed. He believes humanss to be inferior to monster in every way. Despite this, he's still very kind and courteous towards them.
  • Friendly Enemy: Attempts to act politely towards even his enemies, though Rance eventually ends up pushing his patience too far, causing him to give up.
  • Gentleman Wizard: A shapeshifter with an obsession with being gentlemanly.
  • Gonk: While he's not exactly ugly, he's certainly very bizarre-looking, which mostly completely undermines his efforts to portray himself as a sophisticated gentleman and is noted by other characters several times.
  • Healing Factor: Regrows a severed arm through The Power of Hate before the battle against him in Rance VI.
  • The Heavy: Despite being below Camilla in rank, he does most of the leading of the Monster Army's invasion of Zeth, since Camilla herself is too lazy to do so.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His Empathic Resonance ability is used against him by Rance in Rance VI to trick him into turning into an easily-squashed caterpillar.
  • King Mook: Essentially serves as one to the panaclonic species of monster. He even commands a whole army of them in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Laughably Evil: He's a reasonably threatening villain in both of his appearances, but also one used primarily for comic relief.
  • Lean and Mean: Averted. He's ridiculously tall and thin, but also very well-mannered an nice.
  • Likable Villain: He seems like a pretty stand-up guy apart from being a member of the Kayblis Faction.
  • Long Neck: It almost makes him look like a giraffe.
  • The Lost Lenore: Essentially functions as this towards Aurora following his death.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Tries very hard to portray himself as one, but rarely ever succeeds.
  • The Mole: Attempts to serve as this in Kichikuou Rance by disguising as Rance to infiltrate Leazas. The problem is that he acts so little like the real Rance that it only ends up making him more suspicious.
  • Morphic Resonance: If he transforms into someone without utilizing his heart-reading power, then he retains his antennae.
  • Mysterious Past: He's one of the few Fiends whose background we know next to nothing about.
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: His attempts at being an Affably Evil Worthy Opponent only result in him being made a fool of when pitted against Rance.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His tricking Sel into unsealing Chaos for him in Kichikuou Rance is what allows Rance to obtain Chaos for himself, giving the human army access to both of the primary weapons capable of damaging Fiends.
  • Noble Demon: Despite viewing humans as an inferior race to monsters, he still believes in showing them good sportsmanship and seems to be much less cruel than most of the rest of the Kayblis Faction.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Briefly serves as the noble male to Chaos during the short time he spends wielding him in Kichikuou Rance. He also serves as the noble male to Rance's roguish male within their dynamic, making them an antagonistic example of this trope.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: As a Fiend, he's a high-ranking member of the Monster Army. He's also very dedicated to the art of gentlemanliness.
  • The One Guy: The only male Fiend on his team in both of his appearances.
  • Out of Character Alert: Attempts to disguise himself as Rance to infiltrate Leazas Castle in Kichikuou Rance. Unfortunately for him, his lack of research into Rance's personality causes him to act like The Good King and immediately clues the rest of Rance's allies that something isn't right with him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His attempt at disguising as Rance in Kichikuou Rance is pretty pathetic. Not only do his antennae remain fully visible on his head, but he doesn't act at all like the real Rance does.
  • The Power of Hate: A Healing Factor does not appear to be part of his normal power set, but he is able to regrow an entire arm during Rance VI simply through the sheer anger that he feels towards Rance.
  • Posthumous Character: Becomes one in Rance X, where he's regularly mentioned by Aurora despite being long dead.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The polite and reserved Blue Oni to the energetic and unsubtle Aurora's Red Oni.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Savvy guy to Aurora's energetic girl.
  • Sequential Boss: Fought in three consecutive forms in Rance VI: first in his normal form and then transformed into Thoma Lipton and Jill.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Say what you will about the rest of his appearance, but there' no denying that he's a snazzy dresser.
  • Sobriquet: "The Demon Gentleman".
  • Stupid Evil: Tends to screw himself over through poor judgement and stupid mistakes throughout his appearances.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Rance uses Sieg's attempt at good sportsmanship against him when he uses the time given to allow himself to heal before their battle to sneak off to high ground and attempt to drop Chaos on his head. While Sieg manages to move out of the way before it kills him, it ends up costing him an arm.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After spending all of Kichikuou Rance as little more than a joke, Sieg at the very least gains a single supporter in the form of Aurora in Rance VI.
  • Token Good Teammate: While several members of the Kayblis Faction could qualify as Punch Clock Villains, Sieg especially does not seem to be particularly evil outside of his belief in the superiority of monsters over humans.
  • Undignified Death: Literally squashed like a bug. Later, his Blood Soul is nonchalantly swiped from Aurora's hands by Abert and eaten like a cookie.
  • Villainous Valor: Allows his enemies time to heal themselves before fighting them. Rance, being Rance, exploits this for all it's worth.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a former panaclonic, he can naturally shapeshift into whatever form he wants. He can even replicate the power of whatever he is transformed into, though he can only remain in the form of things stronger than himself for a few moments before becoming exhausted.
  • Weak but Skilled: Individually he's nothing too special, with a current level of only 60, the lowest of any Fiend. Despite this, his transformation ability, when combined with his ability to replicate the power of whatever his enemies fear most, makes him an extremely deadly foe.
  • Worthy Opponent: Attempts to be one towards Rance in Rance VI, praising his victory over La Seizel and offering to give his party time to heal and prepare themselves before fighting him. Rance uses this kind gesture as an opportunity to attempt to kill him in a sneak attack. Even after this, he makes one last attempt at showing good sportsmanship by throwing his glove at Rance's feet before their battle, which Rance immediately steps on in defiance.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Attempts to ambush Rance's party in Rance VI by transforming himself into an injured young boy. Alex nearly falls for it but is stopped by Rance, who is too big of a Jerkass to be interested in wasting time saving a child unrelated to his mission.
  • You Don't Look Like You: While he shares a similar overall design with his Kichikuou Rance appearance in his canonical design, he still looks quite a bit different.

La Seizel

Along with her sister La Hawzel, La Seizel was a single entity known as "La Vaswald", a 2nd Class God. She was split into two angels, and then turned into Fiends during the JL Era. Unlike her sister, La Seizel was more immature and brash, leading to a lot of comparisons to La Hawzel. Consequently, it caused her to develop a Inferiority Superiority Complex and began to resent her sister as a result. Even though she loves her, she cannot bring herself to admit it due to her self-esteem, and it went so far as the beginning of the LP Era, when she joined the Kayblis Faction solely to antagonize her sister. She first appearead in Rance VI alongside Camilla and Sieg, as a commander for the former.

Tropes exhibited by La Seizel include:
  • Always Identical Twins: Played straight in Kichikuou Rance, where she's a blue color swap of her sister, but subverted in the canon games, where she has several differences with her sister,
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: She boasts her strength and abilities at the Rance's party even though he's armed with Chaos.
  • Bad Boss: Inverted. Her Apostle Yuki takes every opportunity to mock her.
  • The Bus Came Back: Reappears in Rance X following her defeat in Rance VI, alongside Camilla.
  • Cutscene Boss: Ultimately what she went down as in Rance VI, she gets stabbed in the stomach by Chaos, putting her out of commission. Ditto in Rance X: Part 2, where she is shot down by Rangi when she faces the El Party during their first climbing of Rising Dragon Mountain.
  • Dropped a Bridge On Her: In Rance X, if Human Extinction reaches 30% and she was recruited, she will be killed along with La Hawzel, Yuki & Flame by Arios when he attacks Rance Castle.
  • Dual Boss: In Rance X, both Part 1 & 2, with La Hawzel.
  • Evil Counterpart: Downplayed. She is this to La Hawzel, but she is not villainous, only jealous of her sister.
  • Fusion Dance: She is able to fuse back with La Hawzel to form their original form La Vaswald. Can happen in Kichikuou Rance at random if La Hawzel isn't saved by Rance and breaks from Medusa's horrific torture. She also serves as a Bonus Boss in Rance X.
  • Faking the Dead: Following Rance VI. With a bit of help from Yuki, she goes into hiding and is never seen again until Rance X, where the Human Alliance fights La Hawzel.
  • Flight: As a former Angel Knight, she is able to fly.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Foolish to La Hawzel's Responsible.
  • Heel Realization: Realizes in both Kichikuou Rance and Rance X, that she cannot bring herself to hate her sister, and will happily came back to her side if certain conditions are met.
  • I Call It "Vera": Cool Goddess.
  • An Ice Person: Has the power to create ice with her special gun.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Most of her personality comes from her low self-esteem and being compared to her more refined and gentle sister.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Kichikuou Rance, upon discovering she got her sister defeated and tortured by Medusa, she locked herself in a dungeon, wailing.
  • Outside Context Villain: In Rance X, when Leazas's army and the Fiend Extermination Squad are in battle with Hawzel and her Monster Army, she suddenly appears to engage La Hawzel and if Rance decides to only fight La Hawzel, disappears as fast as she came.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to La Hawzel's Blue.
  • Synchronization: Exploited. When she suspects her sister of selling her body to any random monster (causing her to be assaulted as well) in Kichikuou Rance, she proceeds to pleasure herself to make sure her sister will suffer, unwillingly getting her defeated by the Kayblis Faction.
  • Skippable Boss: In Rance X. During Leazas' first mission, Rance can either face La Hawzel or both her and La Seizel. Beating the duo cause them to join immediately.
  • Tsundere: She clearly loves her sister, but her self-esteem issues causes her to be cold and distant. It shows in Kichikuou Rance when she used their Synchronization out of spite, upon realizing too late when she was captured by Medusa. It later cements her Heel–Face Turn when her sister, then recruited by Rance, comforts her and convinces her to betray Kayblis.
    • Upon joining the Human Alliance with her sister in Rance X, she still has issues to confess her feelings and later asks the young Nagi su Ragarl for advice, as the sister of Shizuka Masou.
  • Twincest: Upon reuniting with La Hawzel.

Kite

Kite Kakutomi was a former human born in the GI Era whose simple, everyday life was suddently ended when tragedy struck his family: his sister caught the "Greening Disease", a deadly illness touching girls between 10 and 19, which makes their skin green and eventually kill them in the span of 10 years. She was then put in quarantine in a remote village near the outskirts of the Monster Realm, north of the future location that will be known as the Kingdom of Zeth. Kite made several attempt to see her sister, but was caught several times and was beaten by his parents. Believing his weakness to be the cause of her sadness, he abandoned his parents to train himself in order to become stronger. He discovered an innate talent for martial arts, having won a tournament at the very young age of 15. Killing every monster in his way, he finally managed to reach the Green Village, only to learn his sister died years ago. He then swore protection to all of the girls of the village, and fended off several monster attacks over the years.

In search for more power to protect the people he loves, he ventured into the Monster Realm, asking the Archfiend Gai to give him strength. Impressed by his feats as a human, he turned him into a Fiend, allowing him to protect the Green Village for eternity. He spent several centuries providing food and protection for them, but grew hateful towards humanity due to his sister's history and lack of support and complete abandonment of the village. Near the end of the GI Era, he fought the human Fletcher Modell in a barehanded duel, but it ended in a draw due to his special moves allowing him to redirect Kite's attacks back at him.

He joined the Kayblis Faction at the beginning of the LP Era due to his hatred of humanity, and made his first appeareance in Kichikuou Rance, and his canonical one in Rance Quest.

Tropes exhibited by Kite include:
  • Anti-Villain: He's only opposed to humanity due to their lack of treatment regarding the Green Village, where he acts as a guardian for all of the unfortunate human girls infected by the Green Disease.
  • Bald of Awesome: Lacks hair and is able to kick Rance's ass in their first encounter in Rance Quest.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Along with Pi-R, he hates humanity while knowingly and formerly being one himself.
  • Boring but Practical: Regarding his abilities as a whole, he is mostly a excellent martial artist with a hardened, rock-like skin. While most of the Fiends gained special abilities or techniques, he just keeps using his Unarmed Combat Skill.
  • But Now I Must Go: His fate in Kichikuou Rance. After learning of the Green Village being saved by Rance, he concludes that his role is over and is no longer required to protect the girls. Despite a heartfelt confession from Calory Mate before his departure, he went to an unknown fate, deserting the Kayblis Faction.
  • Foil: To Pi-R. Both of them harbor disdain for humans, but while Pi-R was mostly looking down on them, Kite's hate is the result of several years of negligence regarding the Green Village. They also choose to become a Fiend of their own volition and their motivation is related to their little sister: Kite became a Fiend to protect the village where his sister died, while Pi-R spent several centuries finding a way to heal his comatose sister.

Medusa

Formerly a Gal Monster known as a "Snake Lady", Medusa was turned during the JL Era, and is one of the most sadistic Fiends ever known by humanity and other Fiends alike. She made herself a name by invading the recently founded Kingdom of Zeth, slaughtering countless people in the year GI 0815, afterward named the "Medusa Dark". She is notable for being the sole Fiend to join the Kayblis out of friendship and shared hobbies (that is, torturing people), however she isn't very active in the war, preferring goofing around in her castle and sometimes attacking small villages to get a female victim. She first appeared in Kichikuou Rance as a commander of the Kayblis Army, and in Rance X as well.

Tropes exhibited by Medusa include:
  • Action Girl: Despite being quite lazy, she's perfectly able to fight off many opponents at once, complete with regenerative abilities and transforming people into stone.
  • Adaptational Badass: In Kichikuou Rance, she only got her regenerative abilities to her name, but Rance X made her much stronger and deadly, along with the new ability to turn her victims to stone.
  • Arch Enemy: Of the Kingdom of Zeth.
  • Asshole Victim: Absolutely no one mourns her death in Kichikuou Rance. By Rance X, she got killed by Rance himself without having sex with him due to the many, many damage she caused to his loved ones and friends.
  • Birds of a Feather: She is the only Fiend who gets along with Kayblis, due to both being sadists and torturers.
  • Body Horror: What she usually does to her victims.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Medusa is prone to mocking others, allies and enemies alike. Especially Kayblis, whom she mocks for his Stutter Stop.
  • Double Standard Rape (Female on Female): Strongly averted, she is depicted as one of the vilest characters of the series and every scene she appears in is played for Fan Disservice.
  • Exact Words: When Medusa was defeated by Rance and his party, she told him he could do whatever he wants with her body. He does exactly that by killing her on the spot, surprising everyone, Medusa included.
  • Gorgeous Gorgon: Though one should not be fooled by her appearance.
  • Healing Factor: Despite not being the strongest Fiend around, she can heal faster than the other Fiends.
  • Hate Sink: While Xavier at least had the filmsy excuse of revenge against JAPAN for the Humiliation Conga he suffered, Medusa is horrible because she likes it.
  • It's Personal: If her killing Gandhi and Kaoru wasn't enough, leaving Rizna broken and barely alive means Rance is out for her blood at all costs.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: All over the place when she gets a female victim.
  • Karmic Death: In Kichikuou Rance, she tortures La Hawzel and finds herself killed when La Vaswald reforms and bites back.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While Rance X is far from happy from the start, it's Medusa's entrance when the game gets nasty.
  • Lazy Bum: She doesn't like to walk by herself and prefers to use her Apostle Alefgard to carry her.
  • Medusa: Except for having normal hair and the snake being in another part of her body.
  • Only Friend: To Kayblis of all people.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Only showed interest in raping females, while slaughtering the rest.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Sports them a lot.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Medusa, along with Kayblis and Xavier, comes up as the single most evil Fiend ever created and partakes in rape and torture.
  • Sexual Karma: Subverted. When she is defeated by Rance, she bargains her life and allows him to do what he wants with her body: so he actually killed her.
  • Snake People: A variant where she has a mostly human body but with claws and a snake coming out of her crotch.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She easily towers over Rance, being 210 cm tall.
  • Stuffed Into the Fridge: She broadcasts the bodies of Gandhi and Kaoru along with the torture of Wichita to all of Zeth via Magicvision.
  • Taken for Granite: As her name suggests, she can turn people to stone.
  • This Cannot Be!: This was her reaction when Rance actually killed her instead of having sex with her like she thought.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Aside from RedEye, Medusa lacks any kind, sympathetic or noble qualities her fellow Fiends possess as shown with her brutal rampage in Zeth. It really shows how vile she is when you consider that Rance killed her without any hesitation, because even he didn't want to have sex with someone like her, nor forcing her to join his army.

RedEye

A magical parasite made by the magician Kestina in the NC Era. Its purpose was to control any life form it was attached to, being the host of its powerful Lvl 3 Magic Skill. It was said to control humans, monsters and even Dragons. However, the Archfiend Nighcisa heard of it and stole it for his own benefit, turning the parasite into a Fiend. As a failsafe to prevent any betrayal, Kestina cursed it: should his entire lineage die out, RedEye would die as well, bypassing the Invincibility Field altogether. To keep itself alive, it became a guardian of sorts to every descendant of Kestina, keeping them alive as a slave, only for breeding means. Its latest descendant is the human Rona Kestina.

He first appeared in Kichikuou Rance, possessing the Wargod Gamma, and in Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by RedEye include:
  • Abusive Precursors: Regarding the Kestina lineage, he only keeps their last decendant barely alive as an Apostle, and only uses it for breeding purposes.
  • Atomic F-Bomb: Drops them whenever he's is danger.
  • Ax Crazy: He's certainly one of the least sane Fiends of the bunch due to the way he was programmed in the first place.
  • Gratuitous English: Half of his dialogue is loaded with english words, often insults.
  • No Biological Sex: Since he's a parasite, he doesn't have an actual biological sex or gender. Despite this, he is consistently referred to with male pronouns.
  • Oculothorax: Its entire body consists of a single floting eye with tentacles, which is not that powerful by itself: it needs to possess someone to channel its power, otherwise it's just a small eye with an Invicibility Field.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: Its main ability is to possess any living being its attached to. In the games proper, RedEye had several hosts: the Wargod Gamma in Kichikuou Rance, Anise Sawatari, a random Mage Monster and Toppos in Rance X.

Lei

Lei Gatthon was a human born in the JL Era, known to be the most fearful ever known by humanity. His natural talent for fighting and his great tenacity allowed him to survive in the Continent for some time. He quickly built a legendary reputation as a warrior, but became more and more distant to the human affairs, believing they only used him for their personal benefit, and began fighting solely for himself as a result. His exploits were quickly noticed by the Archfiend Jill, who launched a great hunt to find and capture him. Despite being kept captive by Jill, he continued to fight for his life, which piqued her interest enough to turn him into a Fiend, finding his stubbornness amusing. His already great strength rose even more and he also gained lightning-based power, making him among the most powerful foes despite not being part of the Dread Fiends. He also fell in love with Jill, but the latter saw him more as a source of entertainment, not helped by her interest in the new Fiend Gai. He then spent most of his life to search for powerful foes to cope with his sadness, and eventually found a powerful opponent during the Holy Magic War in the GI Era, namely the Wargod Sigma, though it was deactivated several months later by the Fiend Lexington, experiencing loneliness once again. Desperately searching for strong opponents, he recklessly tried to engage Kayblis in a 1-on-1 combat, only to be easily defeated, and grew to hate him.

At the beginning of the LP Era however, he choose to join the Kayblis Faction because the promise of a peace between humans and monsters seemed boring to him, and prefered a chaotic world instead, despite hating Kayblis' guts. He appeared in Kichikuou Rance amongst the Fiends tasked to capture Kurusu Miki, and in Rance X as a commander of the Monster Army.

Tropes exhibited by Lei include:
  • Adaptational Badass: While Lei's status as a powerhouse is consistent across his appearances, his current level in Rance X (111) is nearly twice as high as it was during Kichikuou Rance (60). He is also portrayed as being much better at controlling his electrical current in the former than he is in the latter.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Can be recruited to aid humanity in defeating the Monster Army in Rance X, whereas he is only ever an enemy in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Lei in Kichikuou Rance is an Anti-Villain who fights solely to protect the woman he loves. Lei in Rance X is a violent Blood Knight who only undergoes a Heel–Face Turn over the course of the story.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Was interested in Jill, who lost all interest in him as soon as Gai showed up.
  • Almighty Janitor: Lei's official title when recruited into the Human Army? Rocky's understudy. When he isn't wrecking havoc on the battlefield, he's sweeping the courtyard.
  • Anti-Villain: In Kichikuou Rance, all he wants is to be left in peace with Mary. Unfortunately for him, Kayblis would never allow that.
  • Ascended Extra: He goes from likely the very first Fiend that the player will kill in Kichikuou Rance to one of the most developed and focused on Fiends in Rance X. Rance X: Part 2 confirms that he is also the only male Fiend that Rance didn't kill during the first part.
  • Awesome but Impractical / Difficult but Awesome: Toes the line between the two as a playable character in Rance X. He has ludicrously high attack, both of his skills are cheap to use, and he can be obtained relatively easily, but he requires Mary to be present in the party to be able to use one of his skills and requires the enemy to be electrocuted to use the other. Put simply: using him to his fullest potential requires three entire party slots to be used up (one by Lei himself, one by Mary and one by a character who can reliably give the electrocuted status ailment), which really limits the team builds that he can be put in. Additionally, as the only way to clear the Free Cities in a single turn requires killing him, recruiting him throws away precious time that you could use to do other things.
  • Badass and Child Duo: Forms one with Mary if they're recruited into the party in Rance X.
  • Berserk Button: Harming Mary and fighting dirty are both good ways of pissing him off.
  • Bishounen: He's quite handsome in Kichikuou Rance. Rance X makes him a bit more rugged-looking.
  • Blood Knight: Lives for fighting and sided with Kayblis entirely because he believed doing so would allow him to fight more. Even after undergoing Character Development and becoming more restrained, he still clearly loves a good brawl.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Brooding boy to Mary's gentle girl in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Character Development: Becomes softer and less violent after meeting Mary. Kichikuou Rance notably features him as having already experienced his development offscreen, making his former status as a Blood Knight an Informed Flaw.
  • Chastity Couple: With Mary in Kichikuou Rance. While they are devoted to each other, Lei's electrical current prevents them from so much as kissing. Depending on the player's actions, they may be able to share a first and Last Kiss as they die.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: His sweater and coat hide the fact that he's quite muscular, which becomes more obvious when he fights.
  • Cosmic Plaything: No matter how the player goes about dealing with him, Lei is guaranteed to die in Kichikuou Rance, with his best possible fate being an entirely Bittersweet Ending. In a meta example of Throw the Dog a Bone, Rance X goes out of its way to make him one of the few characters to get an unambiguously happy ending.
  • Counter Attack: His Brawling skills allows him to deal painful counters. In gameplay, this translate to one-third of the physical damage you give him.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: While he can be defeated in a number of ways in Rance X, Part 2 confirms that he was spared and recruited as an ally.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: Fights to fill the emptiness that he feels inside. Meeting Mary and devoting himself to protecting her allows him to move beyond this.
  • Determinator: Lei's greatest strength is his relentless drive to keep fighting no matter what. The entire reason he became a Fiend in the first place is because Jill was impressed by this quality.
  • The Drifter: What he used to be back when he was still human.
  • Final First Hug: If Rance fights Lei fair and square in Kichikuou Rance, Mary will run up and embrace him during her final moments. The electric shock caused by touching his body kills her as well, allowing them to die together. The narrative emphasizes that it's both the first and last time that the two were able to intimately touch each other.
  • Freudian Excuse: Is it all that surprising that someone born during a time when humans were treated like livestock would think that the only worthwhile thing about himself is his strength?
  • Friendly Rival: What his dynamic with Sigma eventually grew into during the first Fiend War.
  • Game Face: Combs his hair up into a more intimidating style and reveals his eyes in the process whenever he enters a fight.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: His fighting style consists of self-taught brawling.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Dies with a smile on his face along with Mary if the player has Rance fight him fair and square in Kichikuou Rance. He also dies with a contented smile if Rance defeats him either during their first encounter or one-on-one in their final one in Rance X.
  • Heel Face Turn: Can potentially be recruited to fight for humanity in Rance X.
  • Hidden Eyes: His eyes are almost always covered by his floppy hair, and only reveal themselves when he fights.
  • Hot-Blooded: Anger is the only emotion that Lei is really any good at showing.
  • Hot Guy, Ugly Wife: Has this dynamic with Mary in Kichikuou Rance. While Mary is quite a cute old woman, she's still an old women whereas her significant other Lei is a Bishōnen. Ditto in Rance X: Part 2 where Mary's appearance prevents him from entering Wargod Tournament.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Mary. Lei is around 6 feet tall whereas Mary is quite petite. Moreso in Kichikuou Rance, where Lei is substantially taller.
  • I Have Your Wife: His allegiance to Kayblis in Kichikuou Rance only exists because Kayblis threatened to kill Mary if he did otherwise. His potential recruitment in Rance X also amounts to this, with Rance threatening to kill Mary if Lei didn't agree to become his servant.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Lei is only able to defeat Kayblis after he embraces companionship and cooperates with humanity to do so.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Lei's antisocial and violent attitude masks a lonely person. Meeting Mary and receiving affection for the first time in a thousand years is what allows him to experience Character Development.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lei is violent and belligerent, but not a bad person at heart.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Comes to Mary's rescue whenever she's in danger, but remains surly about it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Strong, fast and sturdy. He's considered to be just below the Dread Fiends in terms of overall power.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Even the other Fiends avoid him due to his confrontational and unfriendly attitude.
  • Maybe Ever After: Rance X: Part 2 leaves it deliberately unclear if he and Mary experienced a Relationship Upgrade during the timeskip or if they remained Platonic Life-Partners.
  • Mayfly-December Romance: In Kichikuou Rance, Mary's refusal to be turn into an Apostle has resulted in her growing into an old woman while Lei has remained physically young. Despite this, they still love each other more than anything else in the world. Seemingly averted in Rance X, where Lei has most of his human qualities restored along with Rance's other Fiends, allowing him to grow old together with the now similarly-aged Mary.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: When Mary takes the time to befriend him, she quickly learns that he's not a bad guy.
  • Mood Swinger: Can switch between lethargic and indifferent to angry and passionate at the drop of a hat.
  • Noble Demon: Has no problem shredding through his enemies like paper, but can be surprisingly courteous towards ones that give him a good fight. He spares Cecil's life after their first encounter and allows Rance to postpone their battle after he claims to be suffering from diarrhea.
  • Official Couple: With Mary in Kichikuou Rance. Their Eternal Love transcends the boundaries of age. Rance X avoids saying outright whether they are once again an example of this or more simply Platonic Life Partners.
  • The One Guy: The sole male member of Archfiend Rance's entourage.
  • One-Man Army: Was one as a human before becoming a Fiend, to the point where entire swarms of monsters had to be sent out just to capture him. In a more literal case, he's also the only Fiend besides Kayblis and Babolat who fights the player without the aid of an army in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Optional Party Member: Serves as a notably strange example of this trope in Rance X. While there are a number of ways to defeat Lei without recruiting him (in fact, all but one of the ways in which he can be defeated end with him dying), it's actually harder to do any of them than it is to take the path that allows him to be recruited, to the point where the player is likely to only be able to do them with the assistance of New Game+ bonuses. Not recruiting him allows the player to defeat Pi-R on the same turn, giving them an entire additional turn to do other things.
  • Papa Wolf: Has this dynamic with the younger Mary in Rance X. Hurting her with him around is a good way of getting yourself killed.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Has distinctly light purple hair and is one of the strongest Fiends.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: An unusual aversion by the standards of the series, as Lei's rape of Cecil is heavily downplayed by the story. May be a result of the Protagonist-Centered Morality that surrounds Rance himself, as Lei has the potential to become an ally later on.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Sports piercing red eyes which are only visible when he's fighting.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Mary's Blue Oni in Kichikuou Rance and the Blue Oni to Mary's Red Oni in Rance X.
  • Rescue Romance: How he and Mary met in Kichikuou Rance. She found him on the verge of death following his failed battle with Kayblis, took him home and treated his wounds.
  • Same Character, but Different: Whereas Kichikuou Rance portrays Lei as an Anti-Villain who has largely outgrown his violent past due to his love for Mary, Rance X introduces before he meets Mary, making him a much more hostile-seeming character overall.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Savvy guy to Mary's energetic girl in Rance X.
  • Shock and Awe: His entire body circulates tons of lighting at all times. If he's angry enough, just being near him can fry a person alive.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Carries a cigarette in his mouth at almost all times in Rance X.
  • Sobriquet: He's known as "The King of Rage" in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Lei's name is generally romanized as "Ray" by Alicesoft, but he is consistently referred to as "Lei" in English localizations.
  • The Stoic: Lei's only visible emotions are anger and indifference.
  • Terse Talker: Even when he does talk, he's not exactly the most verbose guy in the world.
  • Together in Death: If Rance chooses to fight Lei fair and square in Kichikuou Rance, Mary rushes to his side and kisses him, causing her to be killed by his electricity and allowing the two to die in each other's embrace.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Meeting Mary allows Lei to become a more restrained and less violent person.
  • Tsundere: Remains generally curt even after Mary befriends him, but clearly cares deeply for her.
  • The Quiet One: Rarely ever talks when he isn't throwing down.
  • The Quincy Punk: Has the look of one, what with his spiky hair and numerous body piercings. This was likely done in reference to his anti-authoritarian attitude.
  • Won't Work On Me: In Rance X, you are unable to hurt him with a Thunder character or attack.
  • The Worf Effect: Even someone as strong as him was swatted away without a problem by Kayblis when he attempted to fight him one-on-one.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Rance's eventual victory over him in Rance X on the path that allows him to be recruited only comes about after ganging up on Lei after he had been critically injured in a surprise attack and severely worn out after fighting off an army of a few thousand soldiers.
  • Worthy Opponent: Actively seeks these out to curb his battle lust. He used to have one in the form of Sigma, and later attempts to gain another in Rance. Whether Rance is willing to go along with it or not is up to the player.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Has light lavender hair.

Galtia

A former Insect User (the same people as Caloria and Dolhan Cricket) who was born in the ancient SS Era. He was exceptionnaly good at fighting: while normal Insect Users could keep up to 4 insects in their body, Galtia was able to stock twenty of them. He managed to protect his people from numerous assaults of the Monster Army. However, his appetite was also big as well, caused by the sheer number of Insects he hosted. Interested by his abilities (and weaknesses), the Archfiend Ssulal came to him and convinced him with food, betraying his tribe to became a Fiend solely for eating. Despite this, he's still known as a legendary figure amongst the Insect Users, and his tale was preserved to this day.In the LP Era, he quickly joined the Kayblis Faction because of their higher food stock, and made friends with fellow Fiend Babolat, prone to sleeping, eating, and pretty much fighting. He made his first appearance in Kichikuou Rance amongst the other commanders of the Monster Army, and in Rance X as well.

Tropes exhibited by Galtia include:

Pi-R

A former human born during the NC Era, he was a Mad Scientist whose scientific prowess allowed humanity to fight on equal grounds against the Fiends. His last invention was an unknown device capable of extracting the Blood Sool of any Fiend, completely bypassing the Invincibility Field. However, thinking of himself as superior entity well above the average human, he consumed the Blood Soul of a deceased Fiend and became one himself.

At some point, his sister became ill with an uncurable disease, causing him to put her in cryogenics and spent more of his life searching for a cure, refusing to turn her into an Apostle, considering Fiends and Apostles to be "impure creatures". He then captured several girls and turned them into PG Cyborgs (Perfect Girl), making them Lesser Apostles and ultimately find a way to cure his sister through their experience.

During the LP Era, he joined Kayblis by default since he considers humans to be inferior to himself.

Tropes exhibited by Pi-R include:
  • Beyond the Impossible: Big time. He managed to One-Hit Kill a unnamed Fiend by extracting his Blood Soul despite not being able to break the Invicibility Field. Furthermore, in Kichikuou Rance, he made a robot capable of capturing the half-awakenened Archfiend Little Princess, and bring her to Kayblis without being harmed.
  • Boomerang Bigot: As a human, he was already looking down on humans, and becoming a Fiend didn't change a lot: he refuses to cure his sister by turning her into an Apostle, because he considers them "impure".
  • Brother-Sister Incest: Heavily implied in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Heel Face Turn: In Rance X, if his sister was saved and cured by Rance, he pulls one after his death, by "resurrecting" as a robot implanted with a backup of his memories.
  • Mad Scientist: The main cause of his transformation into a Fiend.
  • Not Quite Dead: In Rance X, he manage to Brain Upload himself into a robot, who join the Human Alliance with his sister following his death. This makes him one of the few Fiends who survived Part I.
  • Teen Genius: His youthful looks implies he was turned in at a very young age.
  • Transhuman Treachery: A notable exemple, being one of the rare Fiends who willingly became one without the help of the Archfiend.

Babolat

Babolat was a Oni, former guardian of Hell whose function is to purify humans Souls in the afterlife. He was turned into a Fiend at an unknown date in the GI Era, with the strange side effect of growing him nonstop. However, his brain didn't expand along with his body, and by the time of the LP Era, he mainly communicates with grunts. He is one of the only Fiends who were defeated in the Holy Magic War, after a 7 years long fight against the Wargod Zeta. He reappeared 300 years later, when his body grew large enough to unearth himself. When the LP Era began, he first joined the Hornet Faction, but Kayblis pressuring him into switching sides, fearing him greatly. He appears in Kichikuou Rance and Rance X as a commander of the Monster Army.

Tropes exhibited by Babolat include:
  • Almighty Idiot: He was apparently much more intelligent before his Fiend transformation. Because his brain didn't grow along with his body, however, most likely he has to use the majority of his brain power just to move now.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Over 50 meters by the time of the LP Era.
  • Dumb Muscle: Not at first, but his transformation into a Fiend progressively made him one.
  • Face Heel Turn: Surprisingly, he first joined the Hornet Faction before being forced to join Kayblis out of fear of him.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: Eventually became one over the years, after losing most of his intelligence.
  • One-Hit Kill: During the second fight agaisnt him in Rance X, he tries to concentrate long enough to eat the whole Fiend Extermination Squad.
  • Pit Trap: The most efficient way of taking him down in Kichikuou Rance, courtesy of the tacticians from the Leazas Army, who dug a hole large enough for him to fall in, allowing soldiers to hit him in the head.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has notable red eyes and his lack of intelligence makes him dangerous.
  • Swallowed Whole: What happens in Rance X during his fight, if Rance doesn't manage to break his concentration.
  • The Unintelligible: While he's still able to form sentences in Kichikuou Rance, by Rance X he cannot speak more than a few words and mainly communicates with grunts.
  • Unskilled but Strong: While he has gigantic strength and wide range of attack, his low Level of 11 hinders him a lot, and that's not even mentioning the issue of his intelligence.

Lexington

Lexington was a former Oni who became a Fiend in the NC Era, after leaving his homeland in Hell. During his life, he created two Apostles, named Atlanta and Juno, who served their master right until the First Fiend War against the Holy Magic Sect in the GI Era. During a fierce battle with the Wargod Upsilon, in a competition with the Fiend Noce, the latter took advantage of the chaos on the battlefield to backstab him, killing him in the process. Since then, his Apostles have retrieved his Blood Soul, and spent several centuries searching for a way to resurrect him. An attempt was made in LP Era, during the events of Rance IV, when his Apostles tried to made Rance consume his Blood Soul, but it ended up in failure. They tried once again in Rance X, by giving it to a dying human girl named Nimitz Leak. While it did resurrect Lexington, his will was partially overwritten by Nimitz, and his Apostles are not aware of this.

Tropes exhibited by Lexington include:
  • Back for the Dead: He can take back control if his Apostles manage to take Nimitz back from Rance, or if she's killed early. However, he's also killed quickly afterwards.
  • Blood Knight: Lives only for the thrill of battle and nothing more, and developed a rivalry with the Fiend Noce during the First Fiend War.
  • Came Back Wrong: His Apostles didn't expect a dying girl to have a will great enough to take over Lexington's body.
  • Carry a Big Stick: His appearance in Rance X shows him wielding two iron maces.
  • Deader Than Dead: If Nimitz is still alive and takes full control of his power, his soul is overwritten, making him dead for good.
  • Dual Wielding: Wields two maces in his new form.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Noce, until the latter betrayed him in the Fiend War.
  • Gender Bender: Becomes a female after his revival, likely due to having a woman as a host.
  • Hostage Situation: Happens twice.
    • In Rance IV, Rance takes his Blood Soul hostage to force Atlanta to have sex with him.
    • In Rance X, if both Nimitz and Lexington are killed, Rance does it again to force Atlanta and Juno to join the Human Army.
  • Horned Humanoid: Sports horns due to being an Oni.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After his resurrection.
  • Man, I Feel Like a Woman: Averted. He doesn't care at all of his newfound female body.
  • Posthumous Character: He died long ago during the First Fiend War roughly half a millenia before the beginning of the series, with his Apostles carrying his Blood Soul. He ends up revived in Rance X, albeit as a female, but he doesn't have control of his body which is controlled by Nimitz. However, if she's kidnapped by his Apostles or killed by Rance in battle, he overwrites her will and comes back for real. He doesn't live for long, as he's killed by Rance shortly after.

Ramon C Burksham

A former human and loyal servant of Archfiend Gai. He possessed the ability to see into the future, and is known to have advised Gai about his successor as Archfiend. Following the former's death at the hands of Kentarou, he tries to kidnap Miki to force her to be the next Archfiend but was stopped before he could do so, and afterwards is killed by the Fiend Noce, who feared his clairvoyance abilities.

Tropes exhibited by Burksham include:
  • Big Bad: He's the main antagonist of the game Little Vampire, where he kidnaps Miki and tries to turn her into the Archfiend.
  • The Confidant: He was very close to Archfiend Gai, trusted with many of Gai's secrets and his input was held in high regard.
  • Deader Than Dead: After Kentarou defeated him, his Blood Soul was recovered by the Fiend Noce, and fed to a being known as the Ogin Gimp, which overwrote Burksham's existence.
  • He Knows Too Much: Noce ended up killing him out of fear of having his plan to unseal Jill revealed to the world.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: A lot of what exactly he was up to is shrouded in mystery. Particularly why he sent his three Apostles into the Human Realm to search for something relating to his vision of a future Archfiend, which even those Apostles aren't sure of.
  • Seers: He had powerful clairvoyance that granted him amazing insight into the future. His three Apostles each inherited portions of this clairvoyance, though none got the full package.

Abert

Abert Safety was a former Human turned into an Apostle by Camilla in the GI Era and remembered her as an Iron Lady who would face adversity, unflinching to her enemies. During the "RedEye Dark" incident which involved a huge explosion at the Maginot Line at Zeth, he went missing for some time. Having survived, but at the cost of his memory, he began a journey to find back the one woman who gave her powers to him, and her "unflinching" will. By doing so, he met several women across the country and put them through "trials" (read: Physically and mentally torturing them) in the hopes of finding his master. His son Daniel was born from one of those trials, but strangely enough, he took him under his wing and raised him like a father.

He appears in Rance VI as one of the revolutionaries working for Ice Flame, alongside his son Daniel, yet physically younger than him due to his Apostle nature and helps them with several missions and sabotage operations. During the invasion of the Monster Army midway in the game, he is recovered by Camilla and gains back his Apostle powers, betraying humanity in the process. He is later revealed to be the one who orchestrated the death of Urza Pranaice's family and Rizna Lanfbitt's sealing in Genbu's Castle, also victims of his trials.

At the end of the game during the restart of the Maginot Line, Camilla began to lose her cool. Concerned by her behaviour, not fitting of the "iron lady" he remembers in his youth, Abert eventually put her into a "trial" himself: first by killing her Apostle Reincock to see how she would react, and then secretly helping Rance's party to capture her. After her defeat, he found the Apostle Aurora in possession of Sieg's Blood Soul and consumed it for himself, effectively killing him to become a Fiend in his place. He then made Anise Sawatari his Lesser Apostle and tried to launch a campaign to become the Archfiend, but was stopped dead in his tracks by Rance's party in the postgame of Rance VI.

Tropes exhibited by Abert include:
  • Anonymous Benefactor: Thanks to his help, Rance defeats Camilla once and for all, but Abert has other plans...
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: His Last Words are about planning a last trip with his deceased son.
  • Face Heel Turn: Upon recovering his memories, he happily came back to his master Camilla.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He's quite easy on the eyes, but none of the women he met ended up happy.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Even after being outed as a villain, he nonetheless keeps a polite tone even as he gloats to Urza and Rizna about his previous victims.
  • Gone Horribly Right: His quest for the unflinching woman actually ended up hurting Camilla, the very woman he took as a model, and eventually got her defeated by Rance.
  • Incompatible Orientation: By the time of Rance VI, he eventually comes to the conclusion that Rance, with his limitless determination and unbreakable will, actually meets his ideals of the perfect woman he's searching for, but ultimately sides with Camilla since his master cannot be a man.
  • Lack of Empathy: Almost nothing will affect him emotionnally, not even the death of his son or his fellow Apostles.
  • Leitmotif: "Abert's Scheme."
  • Outside Context Villain: While Camilla acts as the Big Bad of Rance VI, he's mostly doing his own thing alone and happened to be entangled in the Monster Army invasion. He contributes to Camilla's defeat, and ends up consuming Sieg's Blood Soul to be a Fiend and the True Final Boss of the game.
  • Perpetual Smiler: All of his portraits show him smiling at any time, making him quite unsettling even before he got back his powers.
  • Pet the Dog: The one thing he did care for after all of his crimes was his son Daniel, keeping him along during his travels, and his Last Words are about him at the end of Rance VI.
  • True Final Boss: He can be fought as the last boss of the postgame of Rance VI.
  • Unintentional Backup Plan: The attack of Ice Flame in the later half of Rance VI wasn't of his doing, but it allowed Urza to walk again.
  • Unskilled but Strong: As a Fiend, he's slighty more powerful than Sieg, but he mostly attacks by swinging his huge sword.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Pulls one on Reincock as part of the test he intended to give to Camilla.

Xavier

A former Dread Fiend working as The Dragon of Archfiend Nighcisa. He was a creature known as a fire-kappa, who can manipulate fire, and was changed into a Fiend during the NC Era. During the conquest of the Nipponese warrior Fujiwara Ishimaru, he was deployed along with a large army of monster to take him down. While he defeated Ishimaru, he was left exhausted and was sealed in Nippon by the Devil Geppei (founder of Tenshiism). He freed himself several times but was cut down in his tracks, only to be sealed again, explaining his hatred of the Nipponese people. He was freed one more time during the events of Sengoku Rance by his Apostle Toukichirou.

Tropes exhibited by Xavier include:
  • 0% Approval Rating: No one likes Xavier. Not even his fellow Fiends do, which is why they don't bother unsealing him and are rather amused seeing him suffer.
  • Absolute Xenophobe: In the game, it's gone to the point he unseals several Youkai if they can kill Nipponese faster.
  • Abusive Parents: To his daughter Kurohime.
  • Arch Enemy: Of the people of Nippon ever since his sealing.
  • Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: After defeating Seigan and Kentarou who was wielding Nikkou, he was overconfident until wounded by Rance, who didn't expect him to have another Fiend-killing sword.
  • Badass Decay: He lost a lot of power because of his stay in Nippon, and according to Word of God, he was a bit weaker than Kesselring during the NC Era.
  • Beard of Evil: Has one in his true form.
  • Big Bad: Of Sengoku Rance.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Deals one to Seigan and Kentarou at Honnouji. Then, following the appearance of the Demon Army, he will conquer the others provinces by easily defeating all of the others commanders, with only Mouri Motonari managing to turn this into a Curb Stomp Cushion.
  • Disney Death: Twice! The first one happened in Honnoji when he is stabbed by Kentarou and fall through a window. The second happens in Kenshin's route where he flee from the Shimazu estate upon being driven off Nobunaga. Rance: Is jumping out windows the only trick you know, you piece of shit?!
  • Deader Than Dead: Has his Blood Soul consumed by Miki following his defeat.
  • Demonic Possession: Uses the corpse of Nobunaga Oda to do his bidding.
  • The Dragon: Was this to Archfiend Nighcisa back in the day, explaining why he was chosen to repel Ishimaru Fujiwara's forces in the NC Era.
  • For the Evulz: Spends time slaughtering Nipponese people and wrecking havoc because he can.
  • The Ghost: He's one in Kichikuou Rance, an alternative continuity where Nobunaga manages to erase his will upon consuming his Blood Soul, making him a Fiend in his place.
  • Hate Sink: Both out and in-universe everyone hates him, save for his Apostles.
  • Irrational Hatred: He doesn't hesitate to stoop very low in his actions, as long as the Nipponese people suffer.
  • It's Personal: He wish to lay waste on the people of Nippon because of his cycle of being sealed.
    • He also has a lesser grudge on Nikkou for foiling his last ressurection, taunting her about her powerlessness to stop him this time in Honnouji.
  • Kick the Dog: A pretty long list:
    • During his revivals, he went on a rampage, raping and killing hundreds of women.
    • He burns the main temple of the Tenshi Sect, killing thousand of monks.
    • He sets Kouhime to be raped. This one backfires since following this, Rance launched an all-out attack on Honnouji.
    • He releases the Soul Binder.
    • He tries to wake up Orochi in Kenshin's route.
    • Finally, he tries to sink Nippon into the void by crushing the Tenma Bridge.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He orders Kouhime to be raped and then proceeds rape his own daughter.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: His soul is divided between eight gourds in Nippon, protected by eight feudal Houses. Even breaking one is enough for him to take over a living being.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: When he is finally defeated by Rance and Kentarou, he turns back into Nobunaga to try to call out Rance. Unlike most examples, Rance still finish him off without faltering.
  • Villainous Incest: He tortures and rapes his daughter Kurohime out of rage.
  • Villains Never Lie: Subverted. While his actions towards the Tenshiists are clearly out of spite, he technically isn't wrong when he tells Rance that they worship devils. However, the Devils in the Continent are not malicious beings, instead being more neutral and only harvesting souls from dead humans.

Masuzoe

A hanny Fiend, and one of the biggest mysteries among them. Very little is known of his past, such as how he became a Fiend and what Archfiend he originally served. He's very reclusive, mostly keeping to himself in a place known as the "Abyss".

Tropes exhibited by Masuzoe include:
  • Back from the Dead: He's first killed in Rance Quest, but some hannies retrieved his blood soul, preventing him from being finished off. He becomes a possible enemy again in Rance X.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: "The Lord of the Abyss" doesn't sound like someone anybody wants to mess with... though that does make him sound a bit more of a big deal than he actually is.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He's by far the most unusual looking hanny in the franchise. His head appears to be his original body, sitting atop a giant, ogre-like humanoid body with numerous hanny faces on it.
  • Won't Work On Me: As is standard for hannies, he's completely immune to magic attacks of any kind.
  • The Worf Effect: He gets utterly trounced by El and his chosen Best Friend to show that their training paid off.

Warg

Warg Aka was a normal teenage girl turned into a Fiend roughly 200 years before the beginning of the series. Her strength is the lowest amongst all Fiends, even to the likes of Pi-R. However, she makes up by having one of the most dreadful abilities in the setting: she can easily induce sleep and give dreams and nightmares to every living being on the Continent, be it humans, monsters, Fiends, or even Gods, causing everyone to avoid being in her vicinity, fearing her tremendous power. Because of this, she is mostly isolated from the other Fiends and prefers staying away from the battlefield, instead living a solitary life with her pet Lassie. By the LP Era, she joined the Kayblis Faction in Kichikuou Rance because Hornet yelled at her once.

However in Rance X, she didn't choose a side, not wanting to interact with others and also because of her power. If Rance manages to defeat multiple Fiends at once, Kayblis forces her to act as a replacement for the Second Fiend War.

Tropes exhibited by Warg include:
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She accepts putting Rudrathaum to sleep at Rance's request at the end of Kichikuou Rance, because he was the only one who showed her love and attention.
  • Bonus Boss: She only enters the Second Fiend War if Rance defeats multiple Fiends at once.
  • Boring but Practical: Her main gimmick is simple but deadly. First, she puts you to sleep then she powers up and wrecks you. Rinse and repeat. She also heals and throw some debuffs on your party.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: In order to induce Forced Sleep to her enemies, she can strip in order to enhance her power, but she doesn't like it.
  • Glass Cannon: She has around half the HP other bosses possess but she packs quite a punch.
  • Heel Face Turn: In Kichikuou Rance, she can defect to join Rance after trying to attack her territory once, because there are more souls to harvest in the human side.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: The second scene she appears in Kichikuou Rance shows her mentally torturing Stessel Romanov with endless nightmares, but he kind of deserved it at this point.
  • Luminescent Blush: During the aforementioned Full-Frontal Assault.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: As you proceed in her boss fight, she strips more and more.
  • Rocket Tag Gameplay: What her boss fight amounts to. While she hits hard, she can't take as much as she gives so it's a matter of defeating her before your HPs and Hanny Zippo runs out.
  • Story-Breaker Power: A literal exemple. The True End of Kichikuou Rance involves her putting the Top God Rudrathaum (who build the entire setting and history of the series by himself) into sleep and make him dream of an eternal war, effectively ending the story proper and allowing humans to live through one century.
  • Turns Red: During her boss fight, after she puts you to sleep, she will buff herself and unleash a powerful barrage of attacks on your defenseless party.
  • The Unfought: In Kichikuou Rance. While she's part of the Kayblis Faction, she cannot be confronted directly because of her powers and eventually joins Rance's army in a few weeks.

Nimitz

Nimitz Leak was a former pupil of Melfeis Promenade, one of the most powerful mages of Leazas. After a failed suicide attempt, she was found by the Apostle Atlanta who gave her master's Blood Soul to revive him, but Nimitz took over and was turned into a Fiend herself. Taking up the mantle of Lexington, Nimitz was quickly forced into the battlefield in the Second Fiend War and allying with the Kayblis Faction, accompanied by his two Apostles, unaware of their master's true identity.

Tropes exhibited by Nimitz include:
  • Amazonian Beauty: As Lexington, she's portrayed as muscular and very attractive.
  • Enemy Summoner: She can summon Oni from Hell thanks to Lexington's power.
  • Forced Into Evil: Due to being resurrected as Lexington and hiding her identity from his Apostles, she was forced into allying with Kayblis.
  • Heel Face Turn: Can join the Human Alliance after Rance saves her from her Apostles.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Only with her appearance of Lexington.
  • Powerful, but Inaccurate: She can hit very hard as Lexington along with a chance of applying Anti-Regeneration on her enemies, but her attacks have an accuracy of 80%.
  • Redemption Earns Life: If Rance managed to protect her against Lexington's Apostles, she makes amends with Melfeis and joins the Human Alliance while keeping the Fiend's power.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She can transform into Lexington, who happens to have light clothing for battle.
  • Shrinking Violet: Due to her past, she's very timid and mostly keeps to herself.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Her Fiend form, based on Lexington, can make her grow up to 232 cm, making her the tallest female Fiend.
  • Super-Powered Alter Ego: After joining the Human Alliance, she can channel the power of Lexington to fight, which changes her Level of 3 to Lexington's 125.

Spoiler Characters of Rance X

After the events of Rance X, Miki couldn't hold the Archfiend's bloodlust anymore, and cedes her blood to Rance. During the events of the RA Era he first turned Rizna Lanfbitt into a Fiend to heal her, but years later, he slowly began to give in to the violent urges of the Archfiend and waged war on humanity twice. Four Fiends were created for the needs of the war. However, once Rance gets slapped by his daughter Reset, his mind was restored, and Neluaporon died in the war. Upon learning what he did, he killed Hebicalorie, while putting a curse on DD and Waluluport, giving excruciating pain to punish them for their deeds in the war. Waluluport later ends up killed by Arms Arc, who was wielding Nikkou at the time.

DD

One of the Four Fiends created in the RA Era. He was a former Power Gorilla chosen by Archfiend Rance for his brutality and savagery. During the events of Rance X: Part 2, he's the only Fiend alive amongst the four, and suffers great pain due to the curse placed on him.

Tropes exhibited by DD include:
