Rance/Characters/Residents of Rance Castle

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

During the events of Rance Quest Magnum, Free Cities Alliance's merchant and unofficial leader Copandon Dott helped Rance to built a large castle all for himself, out of love for him. Its capacity can be up to 256 people, with ten living rooms for daily activities and meal. Furthermore, maids are available to the owner's needs. By the time of Rance X, several people settled down in Rance Castle, some choosing to live with him, or in search of protection, or simply working for him.

Athena 2.0

An artificial human created by the Witch Frostbyne in Rance IV. She's actually the second version, following Athena 1.0, whose intelligence was similar to a real human's. However, she fell in love with a Ham Barbara and both eloped soon after.

2.0 was designed to be less intelligent but still able to act as a useful familiar and toy for children. She was finally created with Rance's help, however his Imperial Juice got mixed into the creation, altering the process: Athena 2.0 was born with a very low intelligence, but a wide range of abilities, including combat. Despite this, Rance decided to keep her as a pet, and eventually she was allowed to live in his house, and later Rance Castle.

Tropes exhibited by Athena 2.0 include:
  • Angry Guard Dog: Before the building of Rance Castle, she was assigned to guard Rance's house in Ice, not unlike a guard dog who loudly reacts to intruders.
  • Artificial Human: She's a homonculus created by Frostbyne, and the second version of the Athena series. She also has a similar hairstyle to her creator.
  • Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Because of her low intelligence she easily gets distracted by everything, especially ladybugs and beetles. As seen in Rance 5D, it can also prevent her from attacking at all.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Lives in her own little world, to the dismay of everyone around her.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Orange hair for orange eyes.
  • The Ditz: She is by far the most simple-minded character of the series, with several similarities to a dog.
  • Genius Ditz: Despite her general level of intelligence, she's able to able to draw detailed maps from memory and can perform basic math with great precision. She also has very good eyesight and a heightened sense of smell compared to humans.
  • Living Toy: The Athena Series of artificial lifeforms were conceived as toys for children, and as such are not considered "human". As seen in Rance Quest Magnum, Rance can have sex with her despite being inflicted by the Morurun Curse, being considered a sex toy unable to bear children.
  • Mix-and-Match Man: She was created from the combination of the essences of an Angel and a Devil, plus some Imperial Juice from Rance, which caused her to have a very low intelligence.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Due to her status as an Artificial Human, she cannot grow up and is stuck in an adult body.
  • Odd Friendship: She ends up befriending Tourin Sanada, the most skilled strategist of Nippon, of all people.
  • Organic Technology: She's very similar to an automaton, but entirely created out of biological materials.
  • Taught By Experience: While she cannot level up at all, she's able to grow stronger by observing other humans in Rance Quest Magnum.
  • Unskilled but Strong: Has a hilariously low Level Cap of 1, but she's stronger than the average human, meaning she doesn't need to train but at the same time, she can't get stronger at all.
  • Younger Than She Looks: Since she was created in Rance IV, she's technically 5 by Rance X.

Sanakia Drelshkaf

Sanakia was a knight from for now-destroyed Kingdom of Dallas, roughly 200 years ago. She went on an expedition in the floating island of Ylapu, but was captured and kept in stasis until the events of Rance IV. After being rescued by Rance, she joined the Ice Flame group in Rance VI and eventually became one of his adventuring companions. While she first hated Rance due to his perverted and brutish attitude, she eventually softens up, acknowledging his qualities as a warrior after witnessing him saving the country of Zeth. By the time of Rance Quest, she has become the Captain of the Rance Castle Guard.

Despite her average Level Cap of 22, she trains hard to better herself, and shows some good abilities of a Tactician, along with being one of the rare people to have Rance teach her his Signature Move Rance Attack.

Tropes exhibited by Sanakia include:

  • Action Girl: She was part of an expedition of other knights and was considered one of the strongest in her kingdom. However, she's outshined by many of the women who hang around Rance.
  • Belly Dancer: One of the costumes she uses as a disguise in Rance VI resembles one.
  • Fish Out of Temporal Water: Comes from the GI Era where her kingdom still existed. She also has the manners of a classical knight from the Middle Ages.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Works as much as possible to become one, and find a lord to work for. Said lord ends up being Rance, but she eventually accepts her new position as the Captain of the Rance Castle Guard.
  • One of the Boys: She sees herself more of a knight before a woman, and as such exhibits masculine behaviour.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: She has several useful abilities for combat but her Level Cap is average, causing her to fall behind most of Rance's other companions.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Krutche's Blue.

Rocky Bank

The first companion Rance meets in the Slave Arena of Zeth in Rance VI. Resigned to a life of servitude in Zeth, he was saved by Rance and pled his ever-lasting loyalty to him, effectively making him Rance's second slave. Since then, he has followed Rance thorough his time as the Ice Flame leader, often getting bullied by him. Nonetheless, his travels in Zeth progressively changed his opinions of Mages, and he quickly made his place among the companions of the brutal warrior and the orphanage, looking to him as an older brother of sorts.

After the events of Rance VI, he's seen again in Rance Quest, joining Rance in his adventures once again, while living in the outskirts of Rance Castle, trying to get allowed in.

Tropes exhibited by Rocky include:

  • Awesome McCoolname: Rocky Bank.
  • Birds of a Feather: He quickly becomes friends with Caloria Cricket, the last living member of the Insect Users, due to their similar pasts as ostracized people from Zeth.
  • Butt Monkey: Being the second slave of Rance, most of his time with him ends with him getting humiliated and mistreated, so much that the rest of the cast (and the player) pities him and plead for Rance to treat him more fairly. Although he does complain about it, he doesn't really mind and considers Rance his true master after he saved his life.
  • Friend to All Children: He's loved by orphans and spends his time playing with them, with many of them looking up to him as their older brother.
  • Noble Bigot: He starts off as one, being enslaved by mages as at a very young age and prejudiced towards while being a good person. After meeting mages from the rest of the world such as Shizuka Masou and Sill Plain, he's able to overcome his prejudices.
  • I Owe You My Life: The main reason he stays with Rance, regardless of everything he goes through: his life could have ended as unnamed slave, if not for Rance accidentally saving him.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Similar to Sanakia. He's useful as a meat shield for the early game of Rance VI, but he quickly falls behind the rest of his group, especially Patton Misnarge who can do the same but with stronger stats and a higher Level Cap.
  • Precocious Crush: He has a crush on Kimchi Drive during his time in Ice Flame, who's at least twice his age.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After contemplating quitting Ice Flame due to being on the sidelines with his low Level Cap, the Level God Starlevel the Great takes an interest in him and begins temporarily raising his level cap many times over, allowing him to keep up with the rest of the group.
  • Younger Than He Looks: In Rance VI, he's actually 14, despite looking much older. He still looks the same in Rance X, being 17.

Krutche Muffin

Vice-Captain of the Rance Castle Guards, Krutche joined up in Rance X. She's actually a very skilled fencer, more skilled than her superior, Sanakia, but is laid-back and finds combat to be bothersome. Still, with a high level cap of 57 and the skills she's learned from her family's fencing style, she's a highly effective guard.

Tropes exhibited by Krutche include:

  • Bi the Way: Casually bisexual, and has had flings with both men and women.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: She effortlessly beat Sanakia in sparring matches multiple times over when she applied for the Guard, and has even proven to be a better leader than Sanakia, but she finds Sanakia's stubborn and serious personality to be charming, and isn't unhappy having Sanakia as a superior.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: Despite having a lazy, unconcerned demeanor toward her job, on several occasions when Rance Castle is attacked she shows incredible skill as a fighter in defending it.

Alkanese Rize

The leader of Lion Mind, a group of bandits located in an abandoned shopping mall in Eastern Helman and exclusively composed of women who have been betrayed by men. The group was mostly composed of unattractive women who were mistreated, and its goal was to get rid of men. Rance hears about them during his adventures in Rance Quest, and eventually defeats them alongside Alkanese after tricking the Helman City Guard into fighting Lion Mind.

Unlike the other members of Lion Mind, Alkanese herself is actually a beautiful woman, but her huge and tall body caused her to have a complex and considered herself ugly, until her meeting with Rance who was the first person to treat her as a woman. Touched by his compliments on her body, she becomes interested in him and decides to join him and live in Rance Castle.

Tropes exhibited by Alkanese include:

  • Boobs of Steel: In addition to being physically one of the strongest residents of Rance Castle, she's also the bustiest.
  • Gang-Bangers: She formed Lion Mind with herself as their leader, until its destruction by Rance and the Helman City Guard.
  • One Head Taller: One of the few women who dwarfs Rance with her huge height.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Inverted. After losing her makeup, she turns out to have a pretty face.

Biscuitta Burns

The head maid of Rance Castle, a stern-looking and serious woman who is very professional about her duties.

Tropes exhibited by Biscuitta include:

  • Consummate Professional: She takes her job as maid extremely seriously, and expresses happiness whenever Rance is enjoying himself in the Castle.
  • Face of a Thug: She permanently has a sour and stern expression on her face, which intimidates even Rance at first, but her personality is a lot softer than that would suggest.
  • Ninja Maid: She is also an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, and can join Rance on adventures or defend the Castle if need be.
  • Not So Stoic: Two things have been shown to get a reaction out of her: cockroaches (which she loathes), and wearing her old high school uniform, which she finds embarrassing.

Fey Breeze

A maid working in Leazas Castle, who's strangely obsessed with cleaning everything. She first appears in Rance I/01 as the maid cleaning Rance's room, and she eventually becomes of the maids working for him in his Rance Castle in Rance Quest.

Tropes exhibited by Fey include:

  • Determinator: She will clean everything in the castle, and makes sure anyone won't prevent her to do so, even repelling Rance's attempts to sleep with her, since she couldn't clean anymore.
  • Dub Name Change: Her original name was Klean Bew in the original version of the games, before being changed in the official translations.
  • Meaningful Name: Both of her names are references to cleanliness.
  • Meido: She's certainly the most normal looking maid of the series, with a bit of cuteness.
  • Neat Freak: Exaggerated. If she ever sees everything dirty in her sights, she will immediately clean it or replace it if it's clothes. Later exploited by Rance in order to get Miki Kurusu's underwear.
  • Shout-Out: Her localized name comes from Febreze, the American brand of household odor eliminators.

Heidi Bredeter

Another maid working in Leazas Castle, who also appears in Rance I/01 tasked to clean the kitchen. When she's a dutiful maid most of the time, she also exhibits kleptomaniac tendencies and compulsively steals bread no matter the circumstances, which caused her to lose her previous jobs multiple times. She's eventually recruited by Rance to work as one of his new maids after the building of his castle in Rance Quest.

Tropes exhibited by Heidi include:

  • Ambiguous Disorder: Her pathology and obsession with bread is never explained, and she doesn't know why she suffers from it either.
  • Dub Name Change: Her original name was Heidi Pankrau ("pan kurau" means, roughly "to eat bread" in Japanese) in the original version of the games, before being changed in the official translations to preserve the joke.
  • Master of None: She's one of the few characters of the series who doesn't have any Skill Level in anything.
  • Meido: With the exception of her "bread problem", she's actually serious with her duties as a maid.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bread, in any form possible.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has light blue hair.

Caloria Cricket

A strange girl met by Rance's party at the beginning of Rance VI. She's actually one of the last surviving members of the Insect Users, a tribe of Humans with Insect-based powers. With nowhere to go home following the genocide of her people by the Zeth Government, she's taken as an orphan in Ice Flame. Quickly befriending Rance and his companions, she begins to look up to him as her savior and has followed him in many of his adventures. After he set up his own home at Rance Castle, she became one of its permanent residents.

Tropes exhibited by Caloria include:

  • Big Eater: Like standard Insect Users, she can host up to four Insects in her body, and while it gives her multiple powers, she also needs to eat more to feed them.
  • I Owe You My Life: She's one of the few woman with a highly positive opinion of Rance, because he gave her a new family and home to live with.
  • Jack of All Trades: The four Insects she has gives her access to various useful powers and give her more versality in combat.
  • Last of Her Kind: After the death of Dolhan in Rance VI, she is the last Insect User alive (unless one counts the Fiend Galtia).
  • Nubile Savage: Downplayed. She comes from a tribe of Insect Users who were known for their more traditional and down-to-earth practices, and she's a cute looking woman but doesn't exude sexiness.
  • Standard Status Effects: She can poison or paralyze her enemies with darts.
  • Stone Wall: One of her most powerful abilities is to turn into a huge chunk of stone, which renders her immune to any damage but leaves her unable to attack.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has green hair.

Kibako

A teenaged girl who was living wild in a forest near the Free City of Ifo. In Rance Quest, Rance receives a job to help capture her, as she is causing trouble for the townsfolk. Rance is successful, and Kibako falls in love with him and returns with him to live at Rance Castle.

Tropes exhibited by Kibako include:

  • Feral Child: She's survived on her own with no human contact for years, and as such, has a difficult time socializing.
  • Healing Hands: Surprisingly, she has a Level 1 skill in Divine Magic, which means she's capable of learning healing magic. A complete lack of education means she's unaware of this, and therefore has never received any training in the art.
  • Primal Stance: She's usually shown hunched over with her arms hanging downward, emphasizing her wildness.
  • The Speechless: She never learned to talk, and for the most part communicates in growling noises. Occasionally she will speak simple words but doesn't do so very often.

Pigu Geliciam

A Helmanian girl whose father attempted to oppose Stessel Romanov. She was captured and given to Dr. Oama, who used her as a test subject in combining humans with monsters. In her case, her body was combined with puryos, giving her several unique abilities. She was eventually rescued by Lelyukov of the First Army, and she stayed with him until the events of Rance IX, where she joined Rance and Patton in their revolution.

Tropes exhibited by Pigu include:

  • Asteroids Monster: her main ability is to divide herself into multiple smaller Pigus. Each is separately intelligent, but as they are copies of the same mind, they act in tandem. Each time she divides, her bodies get smaller and weaker. She rarely goes beyond eight bodies due to how weak she becomes at that point.
  • Big Eater: A consequence of her puryo biology, she has an enormous appetite and can eat an astonishing amount of food.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She was combined with puryo monsters, giving her an extremely pale skin tone and dark red eyes. It also gave her incredible stamina, physical strength, and the ability to divide herself into multiple bodies.
  • Happily Adopted: Though never formally adopted by Lelyukov, they have a close father-daughter relationship, since he is the one who rescued her and raised her afterward.
  • Unskilled but Strong: She has no combat training and doesn't know how to wield weapons. But her basic strength and resilience are so high that she can keep up with Rance and his party just by punching and kicking enemies.

Carolie Mate

A young girl who caught the rare and deadly "Greening Disease", and as such was sent to Green Village on the border of the Monster Realm, a quarantine zone for those affected by the disease. She works there as a nurse, trying to ease the pain of the residents. Rance meets her during the events of Rance Quest, and stumbles into a finding a cure for the disease, after which she moves into Rance Castle.

  • Bodyguard Crush: She has a crush on the Fiend Kaito, who cares for the girls of Green Village, protecting them and providing for them.
  • Hospital Hottie: She acts as a nurse to the women of Green Village, and continues this job at Rance Castle after moving in.
  • Sole Survivor: Green Village is destroyed soon after she leaves, making her the only survivor.

Crane

An internationally wanted spy said to know secrets from all over the Continent... in actuality, she just happens to have a weird skill that causes her to accidentally overhear all kinds of secrets, and she has no intention of revealing any of them. Rance is given a job to track her down and bring her in, but when he sees how beautiful she is, he instead decides to shelter her in Rance Castle.

Tropes exhibited by Crane include:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She admits she doesn't love Rance romantically, but she is very grateful to him for giving her a safe place to stay, and for ordering Lia to call off the bounty on her head in Leazas.
  • Secret-Chaser: A bizarre case: she has no desire to seek out secrets, she just always happens to coincidentally find herself in situations where people's secrets become known to her. This happens whether she wants it to or not.
  • Secret Keeper: She's very reluctant to ever reveal what she knows to anyone, knowing that could easily make her more enemies. What she learns, she usually keeps to herself.
  • Spy Catsuit: She constantly wears a skintight outfit that has the ability to turn invisible. Even in her private room in Rance Castle she often wears it, having gotten into the habit while on the run.
  • Weapon of Choice: A strange device called the "Puncher": a gun with a spring-loaded boxing glove on the end of the barrel. It has low attack power, but is very good at stunning and dazing its targets, which Crane prefers to do rather than kill those who chase her.
