Rapunzel Hair/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: Someone has unusually long hair.

  • Straight: Alice's hair is so long that it goes down past her hips when it's down.
  • Exaggerated: Alice's hair is past floor-length.
  • Downplayed: Alice's hair is past waist-length, but shorter than hip-length.
  • Justified: Alice wants to grow her hair long in order to donate it to be fashioned into a wig.
  • Inverted: Bald Women
  • Subverted: Bob is about to see Alice for the first time in years and has heard a lot about her extraordinarily long hair. When he talks to her on the phone, she starts eagerly telling him about the major trim she got and exactly how many inches she cut off.
  • Double Subverted: When Bob meets Alice in person, though, it turns out that her hair is still unusually long, even though she had at least a foot of hair cut off.
  • Parodied: Instead of growing from her head, Alice's incredibly long hair originates from another body region... Like her armpits or nose-trills!
  • Zig Zagged: Alice has hair to her knees, but she cut it to chin-length, but she liked it long so she gets a wig with hair the length hers was, but this is expensive and cumbersome so she has to settle for a shorter one...
  • Averted: Alice has a bob cut.
  • Enforced: Alice's unusually long hair is a publicity stunt used to promote a new shampoo.
  • Lampshaded: "That's a lot of hair."
  • Invoked: Alice wants to appear beautiful and unusual to Bob, so she grows her hair very long.
  • Exploited: Alice uses her long hair as a rope to climb a tower.
  • Defied: Alice realizes her hair is halfway down her back and shaves her head before it can pass her waist.
  • Discussed:

Bob: Are you ever going to cut that hair?
Alice: I don't know...I kinda like it long.
Bob: But you trip over it constantly...
