Resident Evil/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • In practically every single Resident Evil game but Outbreak, the final blow is delivered with either a Rocket Launcher (thrown by a well-meaning ally) or a Magnum. This is almost always accompanied by a badass one-liner.
    • Of course, every time the S&W .500 makes an appearance also counts.

Resident Evil 0

  • Billy Coen killing the Queen Leech with a single shot from the oversized magnum.
  • There's a decent stretch of game where Billy is unconscious (Eliminator attacks are nasty) and Rebecca must handle things on her own. During this time, she fights a Tyrant, in cramped conditions no less, and wins. Okay, so it was a somewhat defective Proto-Tyrant (so not at full Lightning Bruiser capacity), but the darn thing still had a Deadly Lunge that could go from one end of the room to the other, and claws as big as Rebecca's entire body, and poor, fragile little Rebecca turned out to be quick enough and skilled enough to bring it down (temporarily, anyway). For a character who'd been saved umpteen times by Billy, that was without question Miss Chambers' Crowning Moment of Awesome.
    • This Troper disagrees. Rebecca's biggest Moment of Awesome is that even though she seems frail and weak, she's able to survive through not one, but two zombie games that happen within days of each other.

Resident Evil 1

  • The fact that some of the S.T.A.R.S members even survived the night is awesome in itself. You've gotta give props to people who can take on giant zombified sharks, snakes, plants, clawed frogs, and a backstabbing teammate...and survive.
  • From the Gamecube remake, the Tyrant of all things can potentially have a Moment of Awesome. At the end of the final battle, Brad throw you a rocket launcher, and you fire it to destroy the Tyrant once and for all. Some of the time. The rest of the time, when a rocket is fired at it, the Tyrant backhands it away, casually. This is a major Oh Crap moment for players.

Resident Evil 2

  • Of course, Your Mileage May Vary, but this troper's favorite would be the end of Leon's B path in Resident Evil 2-- a supposedly dead ally throws a rocket launcher to destroy a monster that's been hounding you the whole game-- and that's already been pushed into a giant smelting vat in an attempt to kill it.
  • The fact that Leon--21 years old, pre-government training, and what was to be his first day of work--continues kicking ass and killing monsters through the entire second half of the game with a bullet in his freaking shoulder.
    • Leon: "Game over."
    • In Claire B: "You lose, big guy!"

Resident Evil 3

  • You've been on the run from the Nemesis since the first ten minutes of gameplay, and even after blasting him twice with a gigantic rail gun, he's still alive. That in itself counts as a Moment of Awesome for the BOW, but if you choose to finish him, Jill gets to pump six magnum rounds into his skull, as she delivers a mocking one-liner that pokes fun at Nemesis' Catch Phrase:

Jill: You want S.T.A.R.S.? I'll give you S.T.A.R.S!

  • Jill finds Mikhail Victor, Umbrella's mercenary captain, mortally wounded in the cable car. If for some reason she decides to return before fixing the car she finds Mikhail, his guts spilling out of him, firing on a wave of zombies with his M4, to truly badass music. He then kicks an explosive canister towards them and shoots it (if Jill hadn't before) or throws a grenade. And Jill still bitches him out for having some type of death wish.
  • When you get to the factory, you find the remains of a U.S Military Special Forces team. Whoever these guys were, they were badass. They managed to kill three mutated Mr. X tyrants--including blasting one into a wall with a rail gun--before dying, presumably fighting them all at once.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica

  • I found Claire attempting to raid Umbrella HQ BY HERSELF to be a Moment of Awesome, even though she gets caught.
    • Let us not forget, she also outruns a helicopter that's shooting at her.
    • And how she manages to wipe out a whole crowd of Umbrella security guards.
  • Claire's fight with the Tyrant in Code Veronica counts as well. "Oh, nothing. Just a big cockroach that needed to be stepped on."
    • In Darkside Chronicles, the rematch with the T-078 Tyrant is the same as before...but the ending is a Moment of Awesome for the Tyrant. Claire and Steve throw the box of explosives at the Tyrant like before, but he actually catches it and throws it out of the plane! Then, they have the idea of shooting a missile at it. They shoot the lock off, and the Tyrant actually catches the missile and briefly holds it back!
  • Even Alexia gets her own Moment of Awesome when she takes on Wesker. After all the crap he put you through in RE1, it is truly an awesome sight to see Wesker get his ass handed to him.
    • It definitely is in the original version, but as the above link shows, it's also a Moment of Awesome for Wesker in Code Veronica X; he runs up the wall and decks her one while he's on fire.
  • Steve being able to somehow resist a virus that either makes you mutate horribly and want to kill anything that you come across or gives you immense powers as his own moment.

Resident Evil 4

  • "Monsters. I guess after this there'll be one less to worry about."
    • And then murdering the largest boss in the game with a single shot from your RPG. Anticlimatic? Maybe. Awesome? Hell, yeah!
  • Leon vs. El Gigante. Damage it enough, and the parasite within will protrude from the monster's back. A normal hero would shoot it. Leon runs up the giant's back and attacks the parasite with his knife.
    • It's also a Moment of Awesome for the dog (Should you rescue it earlier): instead of running off, it comes back to help Leon by standing up to the giant mutated monster and barking at it to stop it from attacking Leon.
    • Somewhat badass for the player, too, since using the shotgun is easier--but a real Moment of Awesome for the player comes in the mines, when you fight two Gigantes and kill both of them this way.
  • Leon arrives at the Los Illuminados fortified barracks and is hopelessly outnumbered, when suddenly, a helicopter sent by his agency swoops in to the rescue and blows the shit out of the camp. Best accompanied by the song "America, Fuck Yeah!" Like so.
  • Halfway through the village, Leon runs across a note from one of the higher-ups that says something to the effect of "You have to do something, or he's gonna kill us all!" Congratulations, Leon, you and your pistol have made a village of humanoid abominations fear for their very survival.
  • Ramon Salazar prepares to give Leon a speech on terrorism, complete with reaching for an ominously out-of-sight lever. Leon's response? He flings his knife into Salazar's hand from across the room.
  • The fight with the Verdugo. It was just the right type of terrifying and it was also completely awesome.
  • Salazar sends Leon down a trap door with spikes at the bottom. Leon manages to get his grappling hook out in time and avoids impalement. When Salazar tries to eavesdrop on his death screams, Leon shoots the listening device, nearly deafening the former.
    • Icing on the cake? Salazar, the cool and collected Smug Snake that he is, gets absolutely pissed.
      • Added in with the prior example, and you can see the chain of events: Salazar goes from arrogantly boasting at him, to pissed off at him, to scared shitless of him. Leon Scott Kennedy 3, Ramon Salazar 0.
  • The fight with Del Lago. I kept thinking of Jaws and Gyorg's boss fight.
  • The final boss fight against the mutated form of Osmund Saddler. And the jet ski ride afterwards while the clock counts down to the island's destruction.
  • Hell, the entirety of RE4 is pretty much one long Moment of Awesome for Leon. Not that his awesomeness was ever questioned, but this was arguably the game that solidified Leon's status as a true gaming badass alongside the likes of Solid Snake, Link, and Master Chief.
    • It must be stressed that he mostly goes through the entire thing on his own. The other protagonists and antagonists may have as many Moments of Awesome, but Leon Kennedy is a goddamn one man army.
  • The knife fight with Krauser. Not to mention the boss battle later.
  • After being trapped in a cabin with an army of Ganados heading their way, Leon tells Ashley to hide. Then Leon and Luis team up and, after about ten minutes of slaughtering the enemies, it's the Ganados who decide to retreat.

Resident Evil 5

  • Chris Redfield vs A Giant Boulder.
    • CMOF and Narm also should be counted toward it. He punches a freaking boulder and somehow doesn't break his hand. You wanna know how he does it? Do ya?? Because he's the motherfucking Chris Redfield, that's how. He speaks the boulder's language.
    • To make the scene somewhat more credible, the boulder (nevermind how it actualy got there) is in an volcano, so it's presumably made of pumice, which is much lighter than normal stone.
  • Chris and Sheva confront Wesker in the bomber bay, only to have Wesker smile and flick off his sunglasses right at Chris. Then, he proceeds to calmly and effortlessly beat the crap out of both Chris and Sheva, before snatching his sunglasses out of Chris' fingers and casually putting them back on his nose. At that moment, you really get it: you cannot beat Wesker in a fair fight, period.
    • In a later confrontation with Wesker, a comment by Chris becomes a minor Moment of Awesome: "I've had enough of your BULLSHIT!"
      • Minor? That was one of the best delivered Shut UP, Hannibal lines I've ever heard! In one simple line, Chris says what we have all wanted to say to Wesker for the last 15 years.
  • Allow me to just add Sheva here. Wesker has Uroboros. She has a knife. Which she uses to stab him with seventeen times in the heart. Sheva Alomar stabs the Big Bad of the series seventeen fucking times in the heart.
    • Also a non-fatal Heroic Sacrifice for Chris when he tells her to [attack] through him. And in that sequence, yes. Chris DOES take damage.

Chris: Suck on this, Wesker!
Sheva: Your time's up, you son of a bitch!

  • Sheva gets quite an impressive moment near the start of the game. Chris and She have just reached a downed helicopter, and are ambushed by about half a dozen Majini on motorcycles, one of which uses a chain to snag Chris's leg. As Chris is being dragged away, Sheva fires one precise shot and blows through the chain. Repeat: that was one bullet, fired at a small target moving very fast. Pretty damn impressive considering that Chris is the renowned marksman and Sheva is the new character.
  • Josh's epic Big Damn Heroes moment at the end of the first chapter. After Sheva's aforementioned awesome handgun shot, the Majini are still closing in, and Chris and Sheva are simply outmatched. Then, suddenly BOOM Headshot! One of the Majini drops dead, and BOOM another, and another, and another...cut to Josh, Sheva's Big Brother Mentor, on a nearby rooftop sniping the enemies with his SIG SG 556. He finishes the last one by blowing up its motorcycle
  • No love for Desperate Escape? Josh's helicopter buddy Doug spends the entire mission endlessly hitting on Jill over the radio, as Josh and she fight through an army of Majini to get to the helipad. His arrival is delayed somewhat, but he more than makes up for it by landing on a nearby roof with bad teeth and a monster of a rifle, which he uses to open a can of whupass with (scoring consecutive headshots at one point). He's stopped only when a Majini hits him with a Stinger missile, forcing a distraught Josh to fly and evade a second missile from said Majini. The Mook doesn't get a third shot, however, because as he takes aim, he finds himself staring down the barrel of Doug's dropped SIG, currently being held by a very pissed off Jill Valentine, and that's the end of that.
  • How about Lost in Nightmares? Battling Wesker in the Dr. Spencer's mansion is the best.

Resident Evil Revelations

  • There's a giant monster eating the front half of the ocean liner you happen to be standing on. It has intestinal parasites the size of city buses and it's specifically upset with you. Most people would scream for evac at the top of their lungs. Chris and Jill, however? Attack the damn thing. With small arms.

Jill, in a reasonably calm tone of voice: We can do this, Chris.

    • The second part of that boss fight is itself a crowning moment of awesome, which ends with you shooting the monster in the throat with a rocket launcher.

Outbreak

  • Special mention goes to the Outbreak scenario. Every other stage has a traditional boss monster you have to kill. Outbreak's boss? A sea of zombies that literally flood the main street of Raccoon City. Solution? Activate a series of explosives and blow them all up. Your character's holy shit reaction after wards is quite justified.

Films

  • Afterlife opens with one of these: Wesker versus Alice. Let's put this into context, shall we? Over the course of movies 2 and 3, Alice has gone from the Badass Normal she was in film 1 to a full-blown God Mode Sue (even Black Hole Sue by the third film), who could win a fistfight with the friggin' Nemesis, had Psychic Powers that she got from the T-Virus, and constantly stole the spotlight from canon badasses Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield. She even assembled a clone army to take on Umbrella. So, what happens in film 4? As the clones go into Umbrella's Tokyo HQ, Wesker guns down one clone, evacuates to a Cool Plane, leaves the facility and nukes the entire clone army. He's then jumped by the original Alice on the plane...and he proceeds to tell her that it's nice to finally meet her, catches her off guard and injects her with a serum that permanently removes her God Mode powers, and then kicks her ass from one end of the plane to the other. Yes, fans, Wesker literally beat the Sue out of Alice. It. Was. Glorious.
    • You know you've made some misteps in the franchise when your hero getting the everloving shit beaten out of her is considered the most awesome thing in the film.
  • In Extinction, the mutated Dr.Isaacs had his curb stomp battle with Alice, and finished his "I, am, the FUTURE!!" speech. The incoming ham and cheese was quickly received with mocking laughter, followed by Alice's "No... you're just... another asshole."
  • Also in Extinction, Carlos's Dying Moment of Awesome was indeed quite awesome, he drove a gas tank into a horde of zombies with a bag of dynamites. As the truck crashed and he was about the light the fuse, he found half a cigarette, hidden by L.J.. Carlos finished the cigarette in one breath, and calmly blew the smoke out, as he watched the zombies crawl toward his truck and waited for the dynamite to go.
  • As further evidence that writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson is learning, Claire goes from doing... pretty much nothing in the third movie to having a legitimate Moment of Awesome of her own here, namely her fight against the Executioner Majini in the prison's shower room. The fight tears the room apart, and climaxes with Claire grabbing a dropped sawed off shotgun, sliding toward the Executioner and shooting him point blank in the chest. True, it only puts him down temporarily, but it was still awesome!
  • Claire also gets one in Degeneration when Senator Davis has one too many snarky Jerkass comments. While watching a little girl get reunited with her aunt, the Senator mentions that he can't stand children, and that "they're a real pain in the ass." Claire's response is walk over and bitch-slap him. Let me repeat that: Claire Redfield bitch-slapped a United States senator.
    • To the ground, before hissing "Bastard! That little girl will probably have nightmares for the rest of her life because of you." No one goes to help the senator because, regardless of how many crowning moments she had racked up, everyone is in awe of Claire's actions.
      • Either that, or nobody helped him because even his bodyguards realized he had that coming. They're paid to protect him, but they don't have to like him, and a bitch slap is only lethal to one's pride.
    • Another one comes a scene or two earlier. Claire and Rani are surrounded by a dozen or so zombies, and they're closing in. Leon tosses her his gun, Claire catches it one-handed, while she's kicking a zombie in the head, and about a second and a half later, there's no more zombies.
