Return to Oz/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Complete Monster: Mombi. Not only does she have a collection of still-living heads to use in place of her own, but she was more than happy to imprison Dorothy in her attic until she was old enough to be added to the collection.
    • Dr. Worley is also a candidate. You thought Miss Gulch was nasty? This man, despite initially seeming to be a perfectly normal and affable doctor, turns out to be a complete psycho who considers the human brain to be nothing but a machine that can be rewired and reprogrammed to one's own liking. He electrocutes his patients in order to cure them (at a level far beyond what any good electro-shock therapy should be) and locks "damaged" patients in the cellar. There's a strong implication that many of his patients have died from his treatments and he's deliberately been covering this up in order to ensure he gets more work and money. His Oz counterpart, the Nome King, isn't even this deranged, and he's actually inhuman!
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: the whole soundtrack can go from eerie to sad or magnificent, and sprouts a wide variety of music, going from orchestra to silent era piano to a creepy mandolin or a modern techno for the Nome King
  • Cult Classic
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Or a Funny Aneurysm Moment depending. The nome hands reaching out to pull open a passageway to the Nome King's ornament room rather resembles a certain well-known shock site.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The film did well in Japan, possibly because they marketed toward its dark side.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Just about everything Mombi does!
  • Narm: The Nome telling the Nome King that Dorothy has A CHICKEN!!
    • The Nome King rising up gigantic and surrounded with flames as the embodiment of satanic evil and the first line that comes out of his mouth sounds like "S'UP!!!" in a deep rumbling voice (he's actually saying "STOP!!!").
  • Narm Charm: Tik-Tok hugging Dorothy and shedding green oil tears should be ridiculous. It isn't.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Fairuza Balk is Dorothy.
  • Straw Man Has a Point: The Nome King points out that as the precious stones of the world are made and owned by Nomes, those humans who mined and used them are actually guilty of theft. True, it doesn't actually excuse him for invading Oz just to retrieve the Emeralds and turning the inhabitants to stone, but still...
  • Ugly Cute: Jack Pumpkinhead.
  • The Woobie: Dorothy and Jack.
