Ring in Drink Proposal

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Someone puts a ring in someone's drink, usually as a means of proposing, or because he was a waiter that was bribed to do this by the proposing person. Bonus Points if the person that has the ring in his/her drink (usually her) doesn't realize it's there until they choke on it.

A variety of Wacky Marriage Proposal, and as such one of the sub-tropes of With This Ring and Grand Romantic Gesture.

Examples of Ring in Drink Proposal include:

Film

  • In Spider-Man 3, Peter arranges for an heirloom engagement ring to turn up at the bottom of a champagne glass, but he's been Mr. Oblivious, and MJ gives up on him before he can propose.

Live-Action Television

  • In How I Met Your Mother, some unnamed person tried this. The drinks were served to the wrong people though (Robin and Ted, Robin got the one with the ring in it.)
  • In episode 132 of Two and A Half Men, "The 'Ocu' or the 'Pado'?" (2009; production code 617), Charlie hides an engagement ring in Chelsea's champagne in an attempt to propose to her, but she swallows it.

Western Animation

Web Animation

  • In the Cyanide & Happiness Show, episode 2 season 1, someone does this, but is annoyed that someone else in the same restaurant does it too.

Real Life

  • A man did a variation on the engagement ring in the champagne glass; he bought her a Wendy's Frosty and challenged her to a contest. And she ended up swallowing the ring.
