Newspaper Club

Tsukune Aono

Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio (JP), Todd Haberkorn (EN)

The male protagonist of the series. Tsukune is an all around average human until one day his father comes home with an application to a mysterious academy he found. Taking it as a sign from above, Tsukune's parents send him to Yokai Academy, which Tsukune learns is a school for monsters! Luckily Tsukune meets Moka Akashiya, his main love interest who coincidentally is a vampire! Along the way, he and Moka make new friends, mostly members of his unwanted harem, and try to survive in the dangerous school. Later in the series he develops vampiric powers thanks to blood injections from Moka. His new power is sealed by a Holy Lock, which keeps him from becoming a Ghoul. Even with this detriment though, Tsukune manages to take life one life-threatening attack from a monster at a time!

Moka Akashiya

Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (JP), Alexis Tipton (EN, Outer Moka), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN, Inner Moka)

The first person Tsukune meets when he sets foot in Yokai Academy. Exceptionally sweet and kind, Moka is a vampire, and takes a liking to Tsukune after ingesting his blood, becoming addicted in doing so. When the rosario around her neck is removed, the seal keeping her true nature is released. Cold and arrogant, "Inner" Moka is a completely different entity from the kind and loving "Outer" Moka, going so far as to specifically remind Tsukune to "be kind to the other Moka". Tsukune is the only one able to remove the rosario around Moka's neck.

  • The Ace
    • Broken Ace: Her mother died and her true memories were sealed. Upon remembering she feels it is her place to be alone.
  • Action Girlfriend
  • A-Cup Angst: She's actually quite ample in bust size, but Kurumu tries to make her self-conscious with her own rack at least once:

Kurumu: Oh, sorry! Did I bump into you? Your chest is so small, I didn't even notice!

    • To be fair, ANYONE's would look small when compared to those of a succubus.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was bullied in her previous school.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Inner Moka, to Kokoa.
  • Anti-Hero: Inner Moka, who starts off as a Type IV, but gradually evolves into a Type II.
  • Artificial Human: Outer Moka was recently revealed to be this. Mikogami notes her to be the most lifelike "fake personality" he's ever seen, and she has established a personal identity of her own.
  • Badass: Every time Inner Moka shows up, it's pretty much guaranteed that someone is going to get their ass kicked.
  • Berserk Button: Inner Moka does not give a fuck about Double Standards, you do not touch her even if you are her boyfriend. (The alleged double standard in question being, unless you're her boyfriend she'll kick your ass if you touch her and you have the symbol of Mars on you.)
  • Betty and Veronica: Betty to Kurumu's Veronica.
    • There are two other Veronicas: Mizore and Inner Moka.
  • Breast Expansion: In the anime, Inner Moka's chest goes up at least a cup size whenever she transforms. In the manga, she seems to be second only to Kurumu in size.
  • Catch Phrase: "Know your place!" (Mi ni hodo o shire!)
  • Celibate Hero: Inner Moka initially refuses to come to terms with her feelings for Tsukune because she passionately believes that love makes you weak.
  • Character Development: Both personalities have matured greatly over the course of the series, with Outer Moka becoming more confident and responsible and Inner Moka becoming kinder and more understanding. It's suggested that the two are gradually merging into a single person.
  • Covert Pervert: Here
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Inner Moka delivers these. All the time.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Outer Moka has these. Inner Moka's fangs are a little too long to qualify.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Her inner self was very cold at first, but eventually starts warming up to Tsukune. As of late you almost can't tell that she was once very standoffish towards him. Inner Moka still refuses to admit it, though, putting her into full-on Tsundere status.
  • The Ditz: Outer Moka, sometimes. She's actually matured a fair amount.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Often accidentally sends people flying and crushes them with hugs.
    • Applies only to Outer Moka. Inner Moka is very well aware of how strong she is.
  • Drop the Hammer: Appears to be Outer Moka's weapon of choice, but she leaves the serious fighting to Inner Moka.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: One of the female students of the Youkai Academy says Moka has the kind of charm that attracts even girls.
  • Evil Laugh: Twice in the second serialization: in chapter 1, after roundhouse kicking Tsukune as punishment for touching her, and in chapter 6, right before curb-stomping the doppelganger that stole her face.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Okay, she's not evil, but when Inner Moka comes around, her voice tumbles down many pitches.
  • Extremity Extremist/Kick Chick: Relies only on high kicks in battle.
  • First Girl Wins: Moka is the only girl of the harem that Tsukune has returned affections to.
  • Green Eyes: As Outer Moka.
  • He Is Not My Husband: Fang-Fang's impression of the relationship between (Inner) Moka and Tsukune gets this reaction out of her.
  • Heroic Albino: Inner Moka is kinda this
  • Identical Daughter: Outer Moka looks exactly like her mother.
  • Idiot Hair: Neither of her personalities is an idiot, though Outer Moka can be a bit of a ditz.
  • Lethal Chef: Inner Moka
  • MacGuffin Girl: Moka's shinsou blood and connection to Alucard seems to make her this.
  • Magical Girlfriend
  • Magic Skirt: In the manga at least.
  • Meaningful Name: "Moka" is a pun on the hot drink, "Cafe Mocha" (Coffee mixed with Cocoa), referring to the 'bitter and sweet' parallels between her two personalities: Inner (Coffee/Bitter) and Outer (Cocoa/Sweet).
  • Modesty Bedsheet: First anime ending.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Tsukune is the only person who can remove the rosary. In one scene, Kurumu tries to remove it to release Inner Moka and turn the tide of a battle, but fails despite her super strength.
    • Moka can remove it if she uses all her strength, but it is dangerous and painful. And risks permanently destroying the rosary.
  • Our Vampires Are Different
  • Out-of-Clothes Experience: In her mind-scape, the personality that is not in control of the body is naked. Neither make any comment about this.
  • The Pollyanna: Outer Moka lost her memories from a significant part of her childhood, and doesn't understand why her mother disappeared. She also suffered from social ostracism, being unable to talk about her problems or share her true nature with anyone (not to mention her Bratty Half-Pint little sister kept attacking her), but come high school, she's quite balanced and friendly.
  • Power Limiter: The rosary around her neck, which keeps her Super Powered Not-Really-Evil Side in check. It was initially put onto her to repress her power, which allowed Moka's mother Akasha to re-seal the monster Alucard. Inner Moka willingly puts it back on after battle because she starts to weaken if she is out for long periods of time.
  • Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner: Inner Moka does this quite a lot when she's in the mood. For example:

Inner Moka: I hope you didn't see a doppelganger... because, you know, that means you're going to die.
[Inner Moka emits a sinister chuckle at her own one-liner]

Kurumu Kurono

Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (JP), Brina Palencia (EN)

A busty succubus attending Yokai Academy. She was initially a rival to Moka, being jealous of her popularity surpassing her own, and attempted to seduce Tsukune and the male student body to find her "Mate of Fate", as her kind is near the brink of extinction. After she was badly beaten during a fight with Inner Moka, Tsukune persuades Inner Moka to spare her, and as a result, Kurumu not only became friends with the pair, but also becomes infatuated with Tsukune, and makes a decision that he will be her "Mate of Fate".

  • Action Girl
  • Alliterative Name: Bordering on Repetitive Name.
  • Betty and Veronica: Veronica to Moka's Betty.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In the Anime.
  • Broken Bird: A succubus literally lives on love. Being heartbroken over Tsukune is literally killing her.
  • Buxom Is Better: Has the biggest chest of the Unwanted Harem, not unexpected since she is a succubus. She is extremely proud of them and loves to take advantage of them with the males.
  • Catch Phrase: "Yahoo!"
    • Or "Yahoo-hoo!" for extra cuteness.
  • Cooldown Kiss in chapter 41 she gives one that distracts the transformed Ghoul Tsukune long enough for Tohofuhai to give the 109th needle to complete the body modification procedure.
  • Dude, He's Like, in a Coma She came close to kissing Tsukune while he was unconscious in her room.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Before she's properly introduced in episode 2 of the anime, the viewer can spot her in the initial scenes in the classroom, in the debut episode.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She certainly thinks so and hopes that it gives her a leg up on Moka.
  • Flanderization: The anime adaptation just wasn't that kind to Kurumu.
    • Subverted by the end of Season 2 (of the anime, not of the manga), where she starts resembling her manga counterpart a lot more, though her mother winds up getting the flanderization to compensate.
  • Genre Savvy: She could see from the beginning Hokuto was up to no good, despite his friendly behaviour, good looks and Meganeko-like glasses.
  • Hair Decorations: She's almost never seen without her frilly black tiara and star-shaped hairpins. And even when her hair is down, the hairpins stay.
  • The Heart
  • Heel Face Turn: She originally wanted to screw over Moka simply because of jealousy. After being defeated, she becomes her ally and romantic rival. Ironically, this is MORE profound in the anime than the manga, as her animated counterpart is more of an asshole, and her Heel Face Turn cranks this down by a severe degree.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Tries to be an ice-bitch (it's in the racial job-description of Succubi, after all), but simply cannot stop herself from doing the decent, compassionate and kind-hearted thing even if it costs her own happiness.
  • Honor Before Reason: As a succubus, she literally has all she needs to make Tsukune love her and only her. Too bad for her that she really is a good girl.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Fighting Akuha was never going to end well.
  • Horny Devils: Subverted in that she is a compassionate, unselfish and kind-hearted girl in spite of her racial personality in the manga... in the anime not so much.
    • Well, the anime does reveal she is just as kind hearted, it just plays up the Horny Devils part of her a lot more, thus disguising a lot of it. When you get down to it, she's really sweet in either version, it's just her anime counterpart (Season 1 especially) doesn't like to show it.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Her "Charm" technique, used by succubi to control men.
  • The Lancer
  • Lovely Angels: With Mizore, and occasionally steps into Les Yay territory.
  • Marshmallow Hell: Does this to Tsukune constantly.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Says something along this line when she realizes in a chapter from the second manga volume that she charmed Tsukune by mistake. What follows is a tear jerker story that shows how troubled she really is, and how honorable she is as well.
  • Only You Can Repopulate My Race: Claims only one man in the world can sire a specific succubus' children, and she is convinced it is Tsukune.
  • Panty Shot: All the time.
  • Purple Eyes
  • Rescue Romance: In her first appearance, she tried to seduce Tsukune to spite Moka. She falls in love with him for real when he stops Inner Moka from killing her.
  • Spit Trail Kiss: She gave one to Tsukune. Except it turned out to be All Just a Dream.
  • Supreme Chef
  • Sweater Girl
  • The Power of Love: This and desire are the Power Source behind a succubus' life.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cookies.
  • Winged Humanoid: A succubus' true form has bat-like wings, a tail, Pointy Ears, and long fingernails.
  • Wolverine Claws: Can slice through trees with them.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's already a good cook, and according to her fantasies and the time she charmed Tsukune by mistake, she would become a submissive, perfect housewife if she and Tsukune got married.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair

Yukari Sendo

Voiced by: Kimiko Koyama (JP), Monica Rial (EN)

The smartest student at Yokai Academy, and the youngest at age 11. As a witch, she has problems with her classmates discriminating against her (according to Kurumu, witches are viewed as "Beings of the Borderline", those that are something between humans and the supernatural, as it is impossible to tell their difference by appearance alone). Despite ranking #1 on the examinations, she was a lonely prankster before meeting Tsukune and Moka. She initially hated Tsukune, claiming that she has fallen in love with Moka, and uses her magical powers to try to drive them apart. However, after both Tsukune and Moka save her from bullying classmates, she falls for him too, and her obsession with both has driven her to try to create a three-way relationship between them.

Mizore Shirayuki

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Tia Ballard (EN)

A yuki-onna who is in the same homeroom class as Tsukune and Moka, frequently seen with a lollipop in her mouth (yuki-onna are vulnerable to warm climates; doing so keeps their bodies cool). Mizore returns to school after a delayed absence and was first portrayed as a lonely, somewhat depressed, and misunderstood girl. She becomes infatuated with Tsukune, going so far as to create her own journal/scrapbook with all of his newspaper articles.

In the past, she confessed her love to a teacher until he began taking advantage of her, freezing him as a result. With the incident and rumors spreading about her, Mizore made it hard for herself to trust anyone, but took a liking to Tsukune, believing he was just as miserable as she was. She eventually regains her sense of trust after Tsukune intervenes when the same teacher returns to kill her. Unfortunately, this leads Mizore to stalk Tsukune on a daily basis.

  • Action Girl
  • Anime Hair: Not so much now, but when she was first introduced in both the manga and anime her hair was much more messy and longer, and despite being only having her hair like that for a short arc (and in her intro eps in the anime), it's still popular with her fans. She doesn't wear her hair like that anymore because to her it was a Important Haircut to symbolize the lessening of her burdens (or something along those lines), which was followed by her becoming a member of the Unwanted Harem.
  • Arranged Marriage: Is rescued from it by her friends and mother.
  • Betty and Veronica: Veronica to Moka's Betty. Then again, Mizore might as well be a Cheryl.
  • Blue Eyes
  • Broken Bird: Has suffered multiple rape attempts. Also, her childhood human friend spurned her Love Confession when he discovered that she wasn't human.
    • And then, her arranged fiance stole her first kiss, pinned her down and groped her with her unable to fight back. Although she wasn't raped it was close enough for her to make her Driven to Suicide and had to be saved by Kurumu.
  • The Chosen One: Implied by the Snow Priestess to be one.
    • In truth, Mizore was "chosen" to be the arranged wife/sex slave of a powerful and high-ranking member of Fairy Tale, all in order to stop the guy from leveling the Yuki-Onna village.
  • Cry Cute: In the climax of her arc in season 2.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Destination Defenestration: Her suicide attempt (which ultimately failed) in season 2.
  • Doppleganger Spin: Her "ice clone" technique, which allows her to make somewhat-independent clones merely out of the humidity in the air. She's shown to be quite adept, as she can not only make clones of others (namely, Tsukune), but have two acting at the same time.
  • An Ice Person
  • Important Haircut: See above after she becomes a member of the Unwanted Harem.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Seems to have accepted that she doesn't have a chance with Tsukune.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Even after joining the group, it was quite a while before she joined the Newspaper Club proper, instead of just hanging around in the club room. And she's definitely an oddball.
  • Lovely Angels: With Kurumu, occasionally dips into Les Yay.
  • Meaningful Name: Shirayuki means "Snow White".
  • Me's a Crowd: Can create "ice clones". Not only of herself.
  • My Biological Clock Is Ticking: She gets an entire arc focusing on this.
  • Only You Can Repopulate My Race: Yuki-Onna have a limited window of fertility (teens to early-to-mid twenties), which poses a problem. A problem that's exacerbated by her fixation of Tsukune.
  • Oral Fixation Fixation: Her Tootsie Roll Pop, which is used to keep herself cool. According to an Omake, it's got a super-chilly frost core.
  • Rescue Romance: As the Kraken dragged her into the sea, she sighed and thought she would die without ever knowing true love... until Tsukune caught a tentacle, pulled them out of the water, and kicked the Kraken's ass.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Even after joining the Unwanted Harem. Stalking Tsukune is her hobby.
    • In the anime, it's revealed this is In the Blood (only suggested in the manga).
  • Stealth Hi Bye: Often appears out of ridiculous hiding places, like trash cans, second story windows, dropped ceilings, the bathtub...
  • The Stoic
  • Strange Girl
  • Sugar and Ice Personality
  • Too Many Belts: All of which draw attention to her Zettai Ryouiki. Most likely intentional.
  • Wolverine Claws: Made of ice.
  • Yandere: Sorta starts off as this. She gets better.
    • Remains a very mild comedic version in the anime, but starts resembling her manga side a lot more by the end of Season 2, though her mother, like Kurumu's, gets flanderized to accomplish this.
  • You Are Not Alone: As mentioned in Rescue Romance above, Kraken is pulling Mizore off a cliff. In the manga, she thinks in despair, "I really am ... all alone." The very next panel is Tsukune and Moka showing up to prove her wrong.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Hers is light purple that goes icy blueish white when she's really using her powers in the anime, inspired from the manga where it's looks like it's iced over. Mostly justified by her being An Ice Person.
  • Zettai Ryouiki

Ruby Tojo

Voiced by: Saeko Chiba (JP), Leah Clark (EN)

A witch from the human world who was part of a plot to destroy mankind as a response to a large garbage dump polluting her mistress' sanctuary. Despite not being an official student, she receives permission to become a member of the Newspaper Club as its assistant advisor (though she prefers to take orders).

Ginei Morioka

Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki (JP), Ian Sinclair (EN)

A werewolf and the president of the Newspaper Club. He is a second-year student at Yokai Academy and a shameless peeping tom who initially began as an antagonist to Tsukune, but becomes somewhat of a senior to him and his friends.

That guy's a pervert who gropes girls' breasts[1] as a "hello", and steals things from the girls' changing room, but...

Kokoa Shuzen

Voiced by: Chiwa Saito (JP), Kira Vincent-Davis (EN)

The younger half-sister of Moka Akashiya. Like her sister, Kokoa is also a vampire, but her powers are not sealed and does not carry the same level of supernatural strength that Moka possesses. To compensate for it, she has a pet bat named Kou that can transform into a variety of weapons and wields it with enough strength to make herself formidable. Kokoa despises Moka for sealing away her inner personality, whom she adores and loves. Before Moka left to study at the academy and prior to her receiving the rosario, the sisters often clashed with one another, although Kokoa could never defeat Moka in a duel.

  • Boisterous Bruiser

It's unclear just how much his natural powers inform what he can do, but it's made clear that his technique is what makes him truly formidable.
  • Brick Break: He can even do this at a distance.
  • Flash Step
  • Handsome Lech
  • Limited Wardrobe: Hasn't been seen in anything other than martial arts gi.
  • Lolicon: He gushes over any small girl he meets, particularly: Yukari, Kokoa, and San. He also doesn't understand why Ginei is not attracted to them like he is.

  • Made of Iron: He casually shrugs off getting speared in the head.
  • Serious Business: Karate.

  • Affably Evil
  • Arch Enemy: To Mizore.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit
  • Enemy Mine: Stops Kiria from slicing Kurumu to ribbons and even promises Mizore that he's not going to hurt her. For now.
  • Genius Bruiser
  • Kick the Dog: Pinning Mizore to the ground, kissing and groping her. When she cries, he goes, "Get over yourself, bitch!" If Kurumu received that treatment it'd be an outright Moral Event Horizon, as hurting a succubus's heart at the level he hurt Mizore's can kill the succubus in question.
  • Made of Iron: He shrugs off Tsukune knocking him through a wall.
  • Sadistic Choice: Ordered the Yuki-Onna village to give him Mizore as his wife/sex slave, or else he would have Fairy Tale level the village.

Tohofuhai

Marin Kawamoto

  • Broken Bird: Had to watch Kamiya murder her husband in front of her.

  • Foot Focus
  • Hot Mom: She doesn't have any kids of her own, but San Otonashi is her adoptive daughter.
  • Muggle
  • Parental Substitute: For San.

Doppelganger

Alucard

An ancient vampire that's better described as an Eldritch Abomination. Tried to destroy the human world, but was defeated and sealed away by Akaha, but he was too powerful to kill. Was reawaken by Moka's shinso blood, and Akasha had to sacrifice herself to re-seal him. Fairy Tail plans to release the seal on him and use to destroy the human world.

  • Ambiguous Gender: One could not tell his gender if he weren't referred to as a "he".
  • Bigger Bad: Is a Sealed Evil in a Can, but is indirectly responsible for the current[when?] story arc.
  • Combat Tentacles
  • The Dreaded: Outside of Fairy Tale, the entire cast is terrified of him and seems to imply that he's a menace to both humans and ayashi.
  • Eldritch Abomination: The only thing he has in common with a tradition vampire is sucking blood. Appearance, he's a Godzilla sized insect-like creature with a head like Xenomorph with a huge amount of tentacles of varying sizes (ranging from the size of ropes in terms of width to being the size of trees) that all have mouths full of teeth.
  • Kaiju: In terms of size, he qualifies.
  • Our Vampires Are Different
  • Name's the Same: Has nothing to do with Alucards from Castlevania and Hellsing, though he may possibly be just as scary as the latter.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can

  1. okay, so the scanlation read "tits" instead of "breasts", but still, same difference
