School Days/Characters

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Characters from School Days include:

Makoto Itou

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Alas, Poor Yorick: The final scene of the anime, with Kotonoha sailing off into the sunset with Makoto's head.
  • Anything That Moves: Has officially qualified for this trope as of the recent release Cross Days sequel in the game series; lets see what he likes to mate with: pretty girls his age? Check. Their beautiful young mothers? Check. Their thirteen year old sisters?. Double Check. Adorable young BOYS who are just as beautiful if not moreso than his girlfriend(s)? Triple Check. Thank goodness the only things he hasn't shown sexual interest in yet are farm animals, senior citizens and week-old corpses.
  • The Atoner : Makoto tries to be this at the end of the Manga only to be way too late due to him being hospitalized.
    • He also tries this in the anime. After realizing the damage he has done to Kotonoha, he commits to her fully in order to make up for his mistakes. Unfortunately, the methods he used to break up with Sekai were less than ideal to say the least.
      • At least in the anime, didn't Makoto commit to Kotonoha mostly because every other girl in the school who wasn't utterly crazy had already abandoned him in disgust (whether legitimate or feigned)?
    • Only in Yuki's route in Cross Days does he change midway instead of at the end though for obvious reasons.
  • Big No: Makoto, at the end of the Valentine Days OVA, when he finds out the huge box of chocolates he received were not from Setsuna but from Taisuke. Upon discovery, not only does Taisuke get surrounded by Bishie Sparkles but he cannot hide his shyness in his now extremely feminine face.
  • Bishonen
  • Bully Hunter: One of his few qualities. He protects Kotonoha from Otome and her Girl Posse in one game ending, gets beaten up to defend Yuki in Cross Days, and apparently Setsuna fell for him because he used to protect her from bullies.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Taken to its logical extreme; Makoto is caught every time he tries to secretly nail a girl. Even lampshaded with a bit of Setsuna's reflection, which most people missed.
  • Casanova
  • Chick Magnet: in the OVAs, where he seems mostly oblivious to everyone's attraction to him.
  • Daisuke Hirakawa
  • Death by Sex
  • Death by Woman Scorned: It's wonder he's not a trope codifier for this seeing how Sekai infamously offs him in a game ending and in the anime ending.
  • Depraved Bisexual: in Cross Days
  • Did Not Get the Girl: All endings that isn't the true ending concerning Yuki's route.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Oh God, oh God, oh GOD... Makoto is shown with these eyes in a scene of Cross Days. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!
  • Dull Surprise: He apparently lacks facial expression unless things are getting too stressful.
  • Even Jerks Have Standards: He hates bullying. If he catches you bullying someone, he'll call you out on it.
    • In the true ending of Cross Days, he is disgusted at Taisuke who continues to gang bang Yuki. He stands up to him but gets beaten up as a result.
  • Everything but the Girl: Failing to get the true ending for Yuki's route results in this because either Yuki stops cross dressing and "Yu" is never seen again or Yuki's gender is revealed and he runs away before Makoto can confess his true feelings.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: In some Cross Day endings if Yuki continues to pursue him, he starts falling in love with "Yu". However, if Yuki pursueanother girl or can't overcome his fear of Makoto might not liking him, then Yuki can make "Yu" disappear forever. That means the one girl he dedicates himself vanishes without a trace and he's stuck with Kotonoha. Quite satisfying end for him except the one ending where he figures out Yu's identity and doesn't end up with her...then something bad comes up...
  • Handsome Lech: In the anime has few redeeming qualities other than looks.
  • Deadly Change-of-Heart: In the anime. After realizing he pushed Kotonoha into the Despair Event Horizon, Makoto attempts to finally do right by her. Unfortunately, this also involved being an utter asshole to Sekai, resulting in her killing him.
  • Hidden Eyes: Displayed by him a few times.
  • Hyper Awareness: In the true ending of Yuki's route, he realizes quickly that Kotonoha is not the most stable girl and keeps his relationship with Yuki a secret. It's also hinted that he plans on having her see a therapist after his conversation with Yuki because he wants to make Kotonoha the last person he hurt with his jerkass ways.
  • Idiot Hair: Rather fittingly.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: An interpretation of his feelings for Yuki. Because Yuki hates his guts at the beginning, he's immune to wanting to get banged by him. As a result, he has to work to get "Yu" to pay attention to him. He then falls in love with "her".
  • In the Blood: Makoto follows his father's footsteps in sexing up as many people as he can; some Overflow games shares the universe with School Days, and Tomaru Sawagoe is in most of them, in fact he started about 4 different big families by himself, and then made some more with his own offsprings...
  • Jerkass: BIG TIME in the anime. Also in the Cross Days manga. Can be in the visual novel depending on the choices the player makes.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: In one of the routes, Makoto takes a pause in between all the girl posse and stands up for Kotonoha when he catches Otome and Co. bullying her. Yeah, he thinks with his cock and all, but not even he likes it when Koto is at the mercy of four girls who want to make her suffer.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Concerning Yuki. This does not apply to the female characters because he always bounces back and forth between them no matter what.
  • Love At First Punch: Guess how he first met Yuki? He met the male Yuki first when he punched him in the face for cheating on Kotonoha. He ignores that part but then he meets his alter ego and falls for "her".
  • Love Redeems: In the true ending of Cross Days, he is willing to get beaten up by Taisuke's thugs to make sure that Yu is okay at the end. He even goes as far as telling Yuki that nothing matters anymore as long as he's with him. Naturally, this is the only ending where he redeems his cheating ways. Of course, he cannot tell Kotonoha about him dating Yuki because he KNOWS she'll go Yandere on him.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: In Cross Days, he's more interested in "Yu" than Yuki no matter what route it is. However, he falls for "her" even more in Yuki's route.
  • A Man Is Not a Virgin: Played brutally straight for all the drama and angst it's worth.
  • Memetic Sex God: A rare in universe example at that, he proceeds to have sex with nearly every girl in his class. The last three do it just because they wonder what all the fuss is about. At the same time. Of their own initiative.
    • It's taken to new heights in Summer Days, where he can have sex with Kokoro, Kotonoha's 13-year old sister (who looks like seven), Sekai's Hot Mom, and Kotonoha's Hot Mom.
    • And now, thanks to Cross Days and the new Gay Option (Yuuki), Makoto is no longer just after every girl, but everything that moves.
  • Ordinary High School Student
  • The Pornomancer: For an otherwise unspectacular person, girls seem magnetically drawn to him. Pretty much the only girl who never shows interest in him is the already-attached Nanami, but that gets thrown out the window in Cross Days. Damn.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Yuki's blue.
  • Settled for Gay: In the true ending with Yuki. He can't stand any of the girls he dates anymore because he's dedicated to Yuki only.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass
  • Tragic Hero: Manga only. He genuinely cares about both Sekai and Kotonoha, but his Fatal Flaw of not being able to choose between them and carrying on a simultaneous relationship until it's too late (Kotonoha unintentionally wounds Makoto while trying to attack Sekai and while he was in the hospital Sekai kills Kotonoha). This, however, is in direct contrast to the complete fuckwad he is in the Anime.
  • Wingding Eyes: In the Magical Heart Kokoro-chan OVA, Makoto and Taisuke sport big shiny gold starbursts in their eyes in their ecstatic response to the arrival of the Anonymous Defence Service.
  • Yandere: In the Cross Day endings where he gains his Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: it's expected of him to become one for Yu but because the credits fade out after he walks away with Kotonoha, he never acts on this.
  • Your Cheating Heart: Defines this trope.

Kotonoha Katsura

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Sekai Saionji

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Alliterative Name
  • The Baby Trap: Some people think that Sekai wanted to do this to Makoto...
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Shows herself over and over again to be an extremely sympathetic and self-sacrificing person, although it's not entirely clear how much of that was just a ploy to win Makoto. If it was all an act, it was an amazingly stupid one.
  • Big No: In one of the game endings where she stabs Makoto for leaving her for Kotonoha while she's pregnant with his baby. After Makoto admits he was worried for her since she disappeared and thanks her for not planning to give up their child, all while slowly bleeding to death, Sekai runs off screaming this line before he can fully admit how he always loved her.
  • Break the Cutie: Arguable, if you root for her.
  • Convenient Miscarriage : In the anime ending, if you're to believe her. Kotonoha says she isn't even pregnant, after cutting her open to check, but by that point they've both gone off the deep end, so it's hard to tell who's lying...or if someone was lying at all.
    • Sekai was only pregnant for perhaps two months at that point. Even if you cut her open, it's unlikely that you'll find any trace of the embryo that would be visible to the naked eye, especially if you do it with a crude butcher's knife.
    • It's also speculated that Sekai wasn't pregnant, and the "symptoms" were more of stress over the situation she was in, but truly believed that she was carrying Makoto's baby. Psychological pregnancy shouldn't be discarded so easily.
  • Death by Sex
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crosses this after Makoto dumped her in pretty much the dickiest way imaginable.
  • Fan Service with a Smile: The waitress uniform for her after school job, which can easily be mistaken as Cosplay. Not only does it leave little to the imagination, it comes complete with Detached Sleeves and some frills.
  • First Kiss: Sekai suddenly takes this from Makoto as her reward for setting him up with Kotonoha. It all goes to hell not long after this.
  • Genki Girl
  • Groin Attack: One episode had Sekai kneeing Makoto for groping her butt. Was viewed as a Crowning Moment of Awesome by most of the fanbase.
  • Heroic BSOD
  • Hidden Eyes: Displayed often.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In one of the PS2 extension endings, Sekai pushes Kotonoha onto a train line right after she and Makoto officially hook up, but Sekai is the one who ends up being hit by the train instead.
  • Idiot Hair: Rather fittingly.
  • If I Can't Have You: The anime ending.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Sekai's initial intentions for Makoto while befriending - and setting him up with - Kotonoha. Then Sekai suddenly takes his First Kiss as a reward. Later, when Makoto confesses to Sekai, she tearfully admits she had chosen to support him when Makoto told her he liked Kotonoha. Sekai puts all the blame on him before they kiss... and so forth. See Matchmaker Crush below.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In Cross Days, it's to be noted that no matter what ending there is, she never ends up with Makoto after all she does to keep him in School Days. Yuki calls her out on everything as well, which helps.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: In the anime, she responds to Makoto's persistent womanizing by violently murdering him with a kitchen knife.
  • Manipulative Bastard : In the manga.
  • Matchmaker Crush : Sekai helps Makoto and Kotonoha hook up... and puts a lot more effort into it than you would expect. And then she gives herself a reward for her efforts by surprise-kissing Makoto. This does not end well. See I Want My Beloved to Be Happy above.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse : Reversed in the manga (where after Kotonoha fails to kill Sekai, Sekai is the one who kills her and even gloats about it in front of a despaired Makoto) and also in some new bad endings from the PS2 version, which involve trains. One of these endings shows Sekai pushing Kotonoha on the line, but falling in as well and then getting hit by the train when Makoto is bailing Kotonoha out. The second features Makoto getting killed in front of the girls after he saves Sekai from her fall, the third kills off both girls in front of Makoto, and the fifth one involves Sekai succeeding to kill Kotonoha by throwing her in the path of the train as it passes, despite Makoto attempting to save her. NICE TRAIN, INDEED.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Sekai's red to Kotonoha's blue.
  • Shiho Kawaragi
  • Shorttank
  • Tsundere: Sekai seems at first to be a Type B...
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Makoto was actually rather normal and faithful to Kotonoha until Sekai seduced him.
  • Woman Scorned: Particularly in the anime.
  • Woman in White: In the opening credits of the Anime.
  • Yandere: Holy crap, Sekai is creepy in the manga and some of the game endings...
  • Zettai Ryouiki

Setsuna Kiyoura

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Babies Ever After by a post card in the game
  • Class Representative: For her, Makoto, and Sekai's classroom.
  • Dandere
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Idiot Ball: It applies most of all for Setsuna when she allows herself to kiss Makoto while he was sleeping, and for letting Makoto have his way with her if he promised to watch out for - and be exclusive to - Sekai. Makoto's past actions should have clued her in that this tactic was not guaranteed to work. Nevertheless, Setsuna's crush on Makoto is most likely an ulterior motive for this.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Ironically, she ends up regretting it in the end.
  • Little Miss Snarker
  • Living Emotional Crutch: For Sekai. Part of her justification for setting Makoto up with Sekai is to get him to fulfill Setsuna's role as this once she leaves.
  • Love Makes You Evil: She sees absolutely nothing wrong with utterly destroying Makoto and Kotonoha's relationship so that Makoto will be with Sekai. To her credit, it's not out of any dislike for Kotonoha; it's more because of her devotion to Sekai.
  • Matchmaker Crush : Setsuna also. She has a crush on Makoto but decides to make sure he stays with Sekai instead, so he can protect her before she goes to live abroad.
  • Pettanko : She's flat-chested, while both her best friend and Makoto's other love interest are VERY busty, so...
  • Rescue Romance: Apparently, she used to be bullied at school and Makoto helped her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She tried to be more discreet than the others... until Kotonoha caught her kissing Makoto in his sleep.
  • Token Loli: Looks very young for her age, and she's very conscious of such a thing. And she's no exception to Makoto banging everything in school that has a vagina and a schoolgirl uniform.
  • Zettai Ryouiki

Hikari Kuroda

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Apparently, Hikari is this for Taisuke as well. She ends up roped in Makoto's bedsheets, but unlike the other girls, Hikari actually aknowledges this as a mistake from the beginning and is the first one to desert him.
  • Zettai Ryouiki

Nanami Kanroji

Sekai's tall, tomboyish, sporty friend.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Otome Katou

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Taisuke Sawanaga

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Bishonen
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Come Cross Days
  • Bromantic Foil: Possible Deconstruction, considering what he does to Kotonoha in the anime and one of the game paths.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Starts like this towards Kotonoha. In one of the Sekai/Makoto game endings, he actually does score with her and they become the Beta Couple. Unfortunately, there's more to his character than this...
  • Gay Option: Played for Laughs in the Valentine Days OVA for which Makoto responded with a Big No (above).
  • Karma Houdini : Gets clean away with raping and/or at least taking advantage of Kotonoha. Particularly egregious seeing that almost everyone else got what they deserved.
    • And in Cross Days He gets away with gang banging Yuki depending on the ending. However, in the true ending, Makoto stands up to them but he still gets his ass kicked.
  • Rape Is Love: In his mind concerning Kotonoha. Though technically he didn't so much force himself onto her, as he did take advantage of her depression (or possibly not even noticing it, the moron). Following doing the deed he actually believes that the two are in a relationship.
    • Played more straight in the original game: Kotonoha is fully alert and loudly protesting the entire time. (While having the girl pretend-protest during sex is the most common kink in Japanese porn, it's obviously not the same in Real Life, and Taisuke is so Genre Blind that he believes this to hold up in his and Kotonoha's case.)
  • Plucky Comic Relief
  • Stalker with a Crush
  • Took a Level in Jerkass
  • Wingding Eyes: In the Magical Heart Kokoro-chan OVA, he (along with Makoto) sports big shiny gold starbursts in their eyes in their ecstatic response to the arrival of the Anonymous Defence Service. Later a naked Taisuke's eyes contain big white starbursts for Magical Heart, whom he sees in person for the first time.

Kokoro Katsura

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Minami Obuchi, Natsumi Koizumi, Kumi Mouri

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Youko Saionji

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

Yuuki Ashikaga

A description of the character goes here.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Adorkable
  • Badass: Is he ever? He punched Makoto for crying out loud! And he also jumps in front of a train to save Makoto from his idiotic nature.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Not to the extreme though but don't underestimate him.
  • Bishonen: A more straightforwards example.
  • Bi the Way: Apparently. But if Makoto keeps being a Jerkass in Cross Days, not even his sex scene with Yuuki will get his new Depraved Bisexual ID off him.
    • Luckily, the part about Makoto being an asshole can be subverted... but only in the true ending.
  • Break the Cutie: Taking Makoto's route leads him down the path of destruction as Taisuke blackmails and gang bangs him. This obviously affects him and depending on the ending, he might be stuck as a sex slave to Taisuke unless Makoto finds out and gets him out of it.
  • Cute Shotaro Boy
  • Despair Event Horizon: In the ending in Makoto's path where Makoto never finds out that Taisuke is blackmailing and gang banging Yuki. Stuck in a really nasty situation, it really breaks him in the end knowing that Makoto won't save him. Makes it worse that he can't tell anyone because he doesn't want his sister finding out what he's been doing.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: When he cross dresses. He isn't recognizable at all.
  • Expy: Of Negi from Negima, since he looks a LOT like him.
  • Gay Option
  • Genre Savvy: Very much so but that's only because he's observing from the sidelines. Only if he pursues Makoto does he lampshade how much he's falling out of this role.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely
  • Heroes Want Redheads: In the routes with him, Makoto is determined to be with him.
  • Hypocrite: He calls Sekai out for getting between Makoto and Kotonoha, but then does the same thing if he pursues Makoto. Sekai doesn't come back to give him a taste of his own medicine however.
  • Karmic Jackpot: In many of his endings, things always seem to go his way. The only time this doesn't apply is when his good deeds come back to bite him in the ass or if he pursues Makoto.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Makoto is in love with Yu. This is what Yuki wants at the beginning before he starts falling in love with Makoto. It's at this point does he began to loaf his other self.
  • Megane
  • The Messiah: It becomes obvious that he's one when every girl in his harem loves him. Even if he cheats on them (which is unwillingly and unintentional), they won't kill him for cheating. They'll end their friendship but other than that, he fits this as long as he doesn't cheat.
  • Nerds Are Sexy
  • Nice Guy: The major difference between him and Makoto and he's loved for it.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: In many of the bad endings, his main motivation for helping his friend Kotonoha ALWAYS comes back to bite him. In one bad ending, he is killed by her when he was trying to help her and that's because she thinks that his alternate self Yu is taking her Makoto away - and in another ending, his sister is killed instead. Also, when he tries to help the other girls, he's always caught in bad situations of cheating and is always blamed for it.
  • Only Sane Man: For obvious reasons. He's the observer of Cross Days and can see what's going on with the love triangle and wonders why the hell no one is doing anything about it.
  • The Quiet One: By appearance and he seems to be like this until he subverts it later when he punches Makoto.
  • Talk to the Fist: What does he do when he first meets Makoto? He punches him in the face which surprises everyone.
  • Third Option Love Interest: The irony is that he and Makoto together would be the most stable couple in the entire series.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Sekai when he thinks that she's the reason that Makoto is cheating on Kotonoha. He's not far from the truth though.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Makoto's red.
  • Screw Yourself: Played with. Yuuki is limber enough to perform fellatio on himself.
  • Tsundere: He doesn't seem to be one at all unless he takes Makoto's route where it reveals he's a type B but warps into a mild type A when Makoto does something to piss him off...which is often.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser
  • Woman in White: When he's Yu.
  • Your Cheating Heart: In some endings, he messes up and ends up getting in situations where it looks like he's cheating. In one ending, he ends up with someone else instead of his childhood friend... and he ends up regretting it
