• Award Snub: It failed to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination when it first came out.
  • Hell, it lost to The Greatest Show on Earth. Still, it didn't do very well in general when it first came out.
• Non Sequitur Scene: "Broadway Melody" really takes the cake. Fourteen minutes that are a non sequitur both in the actual film and the Film Within a Film it's supposedly a part of! At least it's pretty fun in its own right.
  • And the part where Don dances with Cyd Charise in an abstract pink background is weird even for the sequence itself, essentially a Non Sequitur Scene within a Non Sequitur Scene.
• Older Than They Think: Many younger viewers mistakenly believe the songs are original to the film.
• Uncanny Valley: This troper finds the frozen tableau of girls in the "Beautiful Girls" number a little off-putting.
  • You're not alone.
• Unfortunate Implications: The scene including "Make 'Em Laugh" starts off with a pan across several different film sets. The first: A portrayal of Hollywood's Darkest Africa, complete with Tribal Face Paint and Savage Piercings.
