Sleepy Hollow (Series)

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Sleepy Hollow is an American supernatural drama television series which premiered on FOX on September 16, 2013 and aired until 2017. The series is loosely based on the 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving with added concepts from "Rip Van Winkle", also by Irving. The series is set in real-life Sleepy Hollow, New York, although it portrays the town as much larger than it actually is. For the fourth and final season, the setting moved to Washington, D.C.

The plot involves a way more badass version of Ichabod Crane, who after defeating a Headless Horseman at the price of his own life, awakens in Sleepy Hollow in 2013, about two centuries later. very soon after his resurrection, he discovers that the Horseman is back. Now, together with Lt. Abigail "Abby" Mills, has to stop the Horseman and whoever was involved in its resurrection, and eventually prevent the Apocalypse.

Tropes used in Sleepy Hollow (Series) include:
  • Adaptational Badass: Instead of the meek schoolteacher from Washington Irving's story, this Ichabod Crane is a soldier and spy who managed to kill the Headless Horseman in 1781, and seems to have little problem coping with the modern world.
  • Back from the Dead: Ichabod Crane is resurrected when someone resurrects the Headless Horseman in the modern era.
  • Did Not Do the Research: According to a sign seen at the beginning of The Pilot, modern Sleepy Hollow has a population of 144,000. It in fact is a village with just barely over 10,000 people.
    • The Horseman wears the classic "redcoat" uniform of the Colonial-era British Army. However, the Horseman was a Hessian mercenary, who had their own distinctive uniforms that were mostly blue and white.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: The goal of whoever resurrected the Horseman.
  • First-Episode Resurrection: For both Crane and the Horseman.
  • Hollywood Geography: Although the real Sleepy Hollow is a small village, this series turns it into a sprawling metropolis of 144,000 persons, which, if it actually existed, would have spilled over onto and absorbed nearby Tarrytown. Initially Wilmington, NC and environs substituted for the non-existent metropolitan Sleepy Hollow, but as of season three it is being filmed near Conyers, GA.
  • Horsemen of the Apocalypse: The Headless Horseman is actually Death, the rider of the pale horse.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: In season three, with Bones.
  • Magical Foreign Words: Most of the spells in the series are in (rather bad) Greek. At least one is in a Ghanaian dialect called "Twi".
  • Mutual Kill: Crane and the Horseman, back in 1781.
  • Numerological Motif: The population of Sleepy Hollow is a deliberate reference to a verse in the book of Revelation.
  • Off with His Head: Unsurprisingly, the Headless Horseman's modus operandi.
  • Resurrected for a Job: Hinted at for Ichabod.
