Free

Voiced by: Rintarou Nishi (JP), Travis Willingham (EN)

An immortal werewolf placed in jail for taking Mabaa's left eye. Despite being so dangerous and powerful, his personality is quite silly. He can also be serious and cunning when needed, but he usually isn't since he can't die. Recently he is helping the DWMA to fight the Kishin with Eruka

  • An Ice Person: Free uses Ice based magic, but his personality is a little off from the usual.
  • Big Badass Wolf: The whole werewolf deal you know and can be pretty darn badass when he wants to be.
  • Catch Phrase: He's got at least two: the chant "Wolf, wolves, wolf, wolves," and the more informal "GODDAMNSHIIIIT!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Free originally let himself be imprisoned because he wanted to try to dig his way out of a prison with a spoon, like in the movies... Unfortunately, all the meals were served with chopsticks.
  • Complete Immortality: Free regenerates from all and any damage and doesn't age.
  • Evil Eye.
  • Fantastic Racism: Apparently, Shibusen has mercilessly hunted down werewolves in the past. He's not happy about this.
  • Hologram: One of his powers.
  • Magic Misfire/Hoist by His Own Petard: Happened two times during his first fight after 200 years, the second time resulting in him becoming a Wolfman Popsicle
  • Meaningful Name: Names himself Free after beeing freed by Medusa.
  • No Name Given: Free is known only by his nicknames. So far he has been called (Man of the) Demon Eye, Free & (The Legendary) Werewolf.
  • No Sense of Direction: In the Baba Yaga arc of the manga. He was supposed to destroy tower 1 and he went toward tower 2 instead. In the end he ended up at tower 8. Besides towers 2 and 8 were opposite to each other. He had been in Baba Yaga's Castle for a pretty long time by then... I mean that's just messed up.
  • Not-So-Great Escape: When Eruka got him out of jail and he was still restrained. He talked pretty darn loud. The guards found out and surrounded them. He then kills them all in about thirty seconds.He was about to bust Eruka out of Jail but he was easily caught
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Voluntary shapeshifting, full control of his mental faculties, just as strong in human form as in wolf form (but no tail or claws/bite) and apparently immortal by nature before he stole Mabaa's eye.
  • Too Dumb to Live: If he wasn't immortal, he would have accidentally killed himself dozens of times over.
  • Tunnel King: Free wanted to escape prison using this method but they only gave him chopsticks.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Free has stated that his werewolf form is his true form.
  • Unskilled but Strong: After years of imprisonment, let's just say that Free has gotten a little bit... rusty... with his magic skills. At one time, he even manages to encase himself in a block of ice! However, when he does get it right, he's a major threat, not to mention the fact that he can afford to be unskilled due to the fact that he is immortal.

Ragnarok

Voiced by: Keiji Himeno (JP), Sonny Strait (EN)

Ragnarok is Crona's Demon Sword partner. He shares a body with his meister and loves to bully and torment him/her at every opportunity.

Excalibur

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (JP), Troy Baker (EN)

The legendary sword used by heroes and kings. In spite of his immense powers, Excalibur hardly ever has a meister because no one can put up with his unbearably grating, loudmouthed, egomaniac personality. He usually resides in a cave full of fairies, who also can't stand him.

Giriko

Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna (JP), J Michael Tatum (EN)

Giriko is a Demon Weapon and an ally to the witch Arachne. He lives for fighting and destruction, and takes the form of a chainsaw in weapon form.

Masamune

Voiced by: Hiroshi Tsuchida (JP), Kyle Hebert (EN)

A demon blade called the Uncanny Sword and Tsubaki's estranged older brother, resenting her for being a more gifted weapon than he.

Mosquito

Voiced by: Takashi Inagaki (JP), Mark Stoddard (EN)

Mosquito is Arachne's butler. His appearance is a short old man with a large pointy nose which is used to suck the blood out of a victim.

Kishin Asura

Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa (JP), Chris Patton (EN)

The strongest and most dangerous antagonist in Soul Eater, as well as the Big Bad for the entire series and the first demon god. He was supposedly once human, a meister and Death's apprentice who ate his own weapon partner after going insane with fear. Before the start of the series, he was defeated by Shinigami-sama and imprisoned. However he is eventually released and begins to spread "madness" throughout the world.

  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil
  • Big Bad: In the anime version at least, still open for debate in the manga though. But the battle of the Moon states otherwise considering that the Kishin is the last major villain, as well as the most active villain, and possible end boss. Also he's responsible for the Kishins be born and madness in the first place.So he does qualify as the Big Bad for the entire series.
    • Bigger Bad: Bigger than Arachne, potentially bigger than Medusa. However he rarely gets any screen time and is only briefly seen in flashbacks, or mentioned at all. But he still remains a major threat.
  • Bishounen: He can be quite pretty when not making Nightmare Faces.
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: Attacking the bystanders in the Death Room to force Shinigami to take the 'bullet' himself. Also, interrupting Kid's longer-than-usual transformation sequence by skewering him.
  • Dirty Coward: Shinigami describes him as this.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Especially in the anime, he can be disturbingly calm at times. He doesn't even bat an eyelid at Shinigami's threats to skin him alive again.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It's been stated in the manga that he is a "Great Old One", along with the other Eight Warlords, he himself implied to be the "Anthropomorphic Personification of the Madness of Terror."
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Asura is defeated in the anime because he cannot comprehend the concept of courage.
  • Evil Eye
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Not on your hands, your forehead, and especially not inside your normal eyes!
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Having your skin ripped off and turned into a bag with which to seal your soul for all eternity. No wonder he's even crazier when he comes out.
  • Freak-Out: His original one was what caused him to become the first Kishin.
  • Giggling Villain: Extremely high-pitched and disturbing.
  • Hannibal Lecture: In the anime he gives one to Shinigami (while beating each other to a pulp) and another to Maka.
  • Improbable Weapon User: A vajra that fires laser beams?
  • Instant Runes: Summons them by clapping his hands.
  • Limp and Livid: Pretty much his default way of moving, although to be honest, he has to learn to walk all over again. By the end of the anime he's standing upright.
  • Mad God
  • Meaningful Name: "Asura" are minor Buddhist gods, associated with violence and mad desire.
  • Won't Work On Me: In the anime, everybody's attacks are rendered useless against him.
  • Not So Different: A pale, extremely anthropophobic, insane person who betrayed Shibusen, has Black Blood, has a weapon inside his/her own body, and is "allergic to rules". Waitwaitwait- are we talking about Asura or Crona?!
  • One-Winged Angel: His giant True Kishin form in the anime. Although from there he reverts back into an even more powerful human shape.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Scarf of Asskicking: His primary weapon, which can easily impale you. Plus they're made of his own skin.
  • Sealed Madness In A Can
  • Slasher Smile: Not with great regularity, but being madness incarnate and all it's no surprise how well he can pull them off.
  • The Corrupter:Asura creates an army of clowsn and has them corrupt people such as Justin.
  • Ubermensch: Anime-only, from his Reason You Suck Speech to Shinigami-Sama in Episode 48, he can be seen as this.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He's so paranoid and fearful that he has these at the drop of a hat, but his one at the end was a topper.


Noah

The False 3rd Big Bad of the series,(the greed incarnation of) Noah originally appeared to being working for Arachne, until it's revealed that his true goal is to use the Book of Eibon to absorb and "collect" everything, which he feels in essence would make him "everything". In truth, he's not actually human, but a projection from the Book of Eibon used to carry out its will.The first Noah is greed and the second Noah is wrath but is more of a secondary villain.

  • Artificial Human: After he gets killed, the "Table Of Contents" in the Book of Eibon reveals he was a manifestation of the Greed chapter, called a "statue." Another one is sent out, this time of the Wrath chapter, thus leading to...
  • Big Bad Duumvirate:The Greed Incarnation was the Big Bad in the Book of Eibon arc and along side the Index behind the scenes
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: His personal magic revolves around caterpillars and centipedes. On Nightmare Fuel.
  • The Collector: He decided to add Kid to his Tome of Eldritch Lore along with anything else he finds interesting.He's actually programed to be that way
    • Collector of the Strange: Such "interesting" things include demons, sins, and a massive, inky abomination calling itself a Great Old One.
      • He also collected Excalibur. Freaking "He's So Annoying Everything Wants To Kill Him" Excalibur. You do NOT get stranger than that.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Never shows anything stronger than mild irritation, even when he's sucking people up into his book.
  • Flat Character: Noah wants to collect everything... and that's about all we get. He's got four or five separate Motive Rants amounting to exactly this.this was Noah's task by the Tables of Contents to obtain Greed and Obtain Brew.
  • Great Big Book of Everything/Tome of Eldritch Lore: The book of Eibon. He thinks by collecting everything in the world that he will become a god.
  • Legacy Character: It would seem Noah would at least like to be something this, as he's used Eibon's name for "brand recognition", as mentioned above.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: With Glowing Eyes of Doom and Instant Runes to go with it.
    • When he twists his cap around, he's really decided to get serious.
  • The Minion Master: When he actually decides to get serious, he fights by summoning hordes of monsters and artifacts from the Book of Eibon. These include giant worms, flying gremlins, a Cyclops, tentacles with faces, a three-headed dragon with a cemetery on its back and each head wearing the mask of a famous slasher film star, and MICHELANGELO'S DAVID.even though he's a minion himself
  • Never Found the Body: Strongly implied to have disappeared into the Book of Eibon at the end of his battle against Kid.
  • Nice Hat
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Stein, Sid, Marie, Nygus and Tezca never stood a chance.
  • One-Man Army: As Spartoi found out.
  • Unstoppable Rage: The New Noah is the embodiment of Wrath so yeah he's full of Rage.He also beats up Gopher when he gets him angry

The Great Old One/The Black Mass

The above mentioned abomination sealed with Noah's Book of Eibon. It claims that it was one of the Eight Warlords, along with Shinigami, Ashura, Eibon, and that those eight are and were truly beings known as the Great Old Ones, "existences which drive men to madness", to paraphrase the thing. It can give power at the cost of one's sanity, similar to the effects of Black Blood.

  • Ambiguous Gender: It's a massive, inky black mass, and only very vaguely humanoid. So it seems safe to say that Atshushi is justified in this case.
  • Eldritch Abomination: See for yourself [dead link]. Also, see what it calls itself.
  • Fan Nickname: Its title is often shortened to "GOO", which, nicely enough, also describes its apparent form quite well, other fans simply call it The Black Mass.
  • It's All Our Fault: It states that the Great Old Ones' very existence influenced madness and that they were ultimately responsible for the madness that was Asura.
  • Cthulhumanoid: he was based on Cthulhu
  • No Name Given: He only refers himself as one of the Great Old Ones.
  • Power At a Price: As stated above, he can give people power at the cost of their sanity, throwing them into madness.
  • Secret Test of Character
  • The Reveal: "Fragment of the Madness of Law... Fragment... of Shinigami."
  • Sealed Evil in a Can/Sealed Good in a Can: Though reasons for how and why aren't clear, it seems to be existing within the Book of Eibon and though it starts out antagonizing, its alliance is ultimately sort of ambiguous.
    • It's also staying there by choice, for its own vague reasons, and has the power to get out any time.

Gopher

Gopher has a rather aggressive and violent nature, especially if it is concerning insults made towards Noah, whom he is both extremely protective over and obsessed about. Gopher personally believes that he is the only one who can satisfy Noah. Justin also describes Gopher as always being uptight. He later demonstrates a tendency to bite his top lip whenever he becomes enraged.

Table of Contents (TOC)/The Index

A small, unassuming creature that acts as a guide inside the Book of Eibon, leading its visitors through the book's chapters until they reach enlightenment or madness. It's actually the 3rd Big Bad of the Series ,the book's "intelligence" and Noah's puppetmaster, with desires to take the Kishin for itself so it can "educate" the world with Asura's madness.

  • Affably Evil: Its motivations certainly aren't good, but it's still polite, helpful, and true to its word.
  • Big Bad:It was responsible for creating the Noahs both the first Greed incarnation who acted as the Big Bad for the Book of Eibon Arc,while The TOC was operating behind the scenes and the second Wrath
  • Eldritch Abomination: A relatively minor and benign one.
  • Evil Mentor: It wants to be one of these for the whole world, corrupting everything with the knowledge and secrets that Eibon locked away.
  • Madness Mantra: A quite epic one:

"I want to give guidance. I want to teach. I want to point. I want to show. I want to guide. I want to inform. I want to teach. I want to instruct. I want to explain. I want to enlighten. I want to initiate. I want to introduce. I want to instruct. I want to educate. Anyway...I want to teach".

  • The Man Behind the Man: Is revealed to be the one behind Noah's actions (and who created him in the first place.
  • Tome of Eldritch Lore: It essentially is one.
  • Verbal Tic: Depending on the translation, "squideed" or "outdeed" for "indeed," followed by a hasty correction.

Mifune

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (JP), Robert McCollum (EN)

A samurai with a soul so strong that it counts for ninety-nine souls by itself. Black Star was about to take his soul but stopped when he saw how Mifune was protecting the young witch, Angela. He acts like a big brother or even a father to Angela.

The Clown

Insanity incarnate, it was born as a result of the madness Asura released into the world. Maka and Soul first encountered it in a twisted factory where it tried to drive them both insane, but they defeated it with Maka's anti-demon wavelength. It escaped, and has since allied itself with Noah's team and with Justin Law in particular.

Recently, Medusa has taken to creating her own artificial Clowns: the Black Clown, which has similar capabilities to the original, and the Violet Clown, a "portable" model shaped like a crescent moon that defends her from insanity and amplifies her attacks.Asura has created more clowns on the moon

  • The Corruption: It and the Black Clown spread insanity just by existing.
    • In turn, the Clowns rise from the corruption of Asura's insanity. Asura's dwelling is packed with them.
  • Eldritch Abomination
  • It Got Worse: There is now a bunch of these things running around.
  • Mind Rape: Pulls a particularly nasty one on Maka.
  • Monster Clown: On top of being scary as hell, its body is so twisted that it's barely recognizable as a clown at all. Presumably, one look at it would make Death the Kid's head explode.
  • Mooks: Asura has his own army of Clowns.
    • Elite Mooks: Moonlight, White Rabbit and Kaguya are basically this, since they are more powerful than the other Clowns and have their own powers. Others appeared later.
  • Not Quite Dead: After being cut in half by Maka's Demon Hunter, it revived, freaked them out one last time, and disappeared. The attack apparently caused some lasting damage, because now its head is even more deformed than usual.
  • The Brute on Asura's team
  • The Dark Chick well on Noah's/Table of Contents's team.

Eibon

Voiced by: Yasuyuki Kase (JP), Christopher Sabat (EN)

The mysterious creator of BREW, the Eternal Spring, and the Book of Eibon, among other demon tools. Eibon was one of Shinigami's eight warriors, alongside Asura. Not much else is known about him.

The Flying Dutchman

Voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), Phil Parsons (EN)

The Dutchman is the soul of the ship Nidhogg, who fought Death the Kid while collecting souls for the Kishin. He later appeared as a factory which housed The Clown. Ultimately, he was destroyed, after being toyed with by Blair.

  • Genius Loci: A ship, and, later, a factory.
  • Nice Hat: Of which he is very protective.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Dude looks like an evil Muppet...
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: His second form included one that would actually kill anyone who touched it; he tried to goad Blair into pressing it by claiming it would kill him. However, Blair tricked him into pressing it himself, so he died, taking the factory with him.

Rachel Boyd

Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima (JP), Carrie Savage (EN)

A little girl who lives in Shibusen with her parents. And becomes Medusa's host unwillingly.

  • Adult Fear: Your cute five-year-old (insert: daughter, sister, cousin, ward, neighbor, etc.) goes pets a stray dog while walk down the street. After that she starts talking to herself while watching TV for way too long and acting like a zombie. Later that night you have a glimpse of a super creepy viper, and your little girl cries and claims to have seen it too. The morning after, she keeps acting creepy and kills a spider with her own hands... and starts talking like an adult and acting cold to you, addressing you as if you were a stranger. And then, she vanishes right in front of your porch, and you can't do anything abut it. Yikes.
  • Barrier Maiden: Sorta. Medusa not only possesses her, but uses her as a hostage: yeah, she did promise to leave Rachel's body, but it doesn't mean she can't use Rachel's age and pawn condition to her advantage.
  • Creepy Child: Not her fault. Dammit, Medusa.
  • Evil Costume Switch: She wears a black dress similar to Medusa's own when possessed.
  • Fille Fatale: Sorta, since Medusa keeps acting as The Vamp while in the poor little girl's body, doing so specially to drive Stein and others mad. Aaaaaaauuuugh.
  • Grand Theft Me: On the receiving end.

Ahab

A weapon who takes the form of a giant harpoon gun. He is traditionally wielded by a different person for his village's annual sky whale hunt.

  • Cool Old Guy
  • Handicapped Badass: He's got a peg leg. Not that it stops him any.
  • The Hunter
  • Meaningful Name: He's named after Captain Ahab of Moby Dick. But unlike his namesake, who hunts one particular whale out of revenge, this guy hunts one type of whale for the genuine threat it poses against his village, and the world for that matter.
  • Student and Master Team: He's far older and more experienced than his meisters, and guides them during their hunts.
