Maka Albarn

Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa (JP), Junko Takeuchi (JP - CD dramas), Laura Bailey (EN)

Badass Bookworm heroine and meister to Soul. Her goal is to obtain the 100 souls required to turn Soul into a Death Scythe. She succeeds.

  • Action Girl
  • All Men Are Perverts: Out of all the genderswapped girls, Maka's the only one to get a nosebleed. Coincidence?
    • Made even better by Soul lampshading it.
  • Almighty Janitor: Not anymore, since Soul is a Death Scythe now.
  • Awesome By Analysis: by chapter 76 she and Soul pull a CMOA via this trope.
  • Ax Crazy: Under the effect of the black blood when fighting Crona.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Black Star.
  • Badass Adorable
  • Badass Bookworm: Soul is her weapon of choice. Her second favorite weapon? A nice, hard book.
  • Badass in Distress: What Maka went through in the Envy and Sloth chapters. She seems to be back to action now that she's determined to save Crona even when everyone thinks s/he's hopeless now, though it didn't stop some people from crying "Chickification".
  • Badass Longcoat
  • Battle Ballgown/Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: The Black Blood dress armor.
  • Berserk Button: In the anime, after she befriends Crona, hurting Crona is her berserk button. An example, during the final fight with Medusa in the anime, Crona gets badly injured trying to protect Maka. Maka then unleashed a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Medusa. See it here.
    • More specifically, Medusa sets off a Berserk Button in Maka for what she did to Crona. Maka also finds Medusa extremely frustrating to deal with, especially since Maka seems to want to find the best in everyone.
    • Soul getting hurt is also one, especially if she's the reason he gets hurt, although to a lesser degree. The most obvious is their in their initial fight with Crona. The next time they meet, she beats the shit outta the kid, before befriending him/her of course.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Is half-Japanese
  • Catch Phrase: "I'll take your soul." Or something similar.
    • "Maka...CHOP!" Mostly anime.
  • Childhood Friends: With Black*Star
  • Cooldown Hug: With Crona.
  • Country Matters: In the Hungarian dub.
  • Cry Cute: Well, Maka is usually a tough girl, but...just look. Might count as Moe, too.
  • Cute Bruiser
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt
  • Demon Slaying: One of the few characters gifted with the sought-after anti-demon wavelength. As a result, she's extremely sensitive to anything "demonic" and extremely effective at killing anything "demonic".
  • Determinator Plucky Girl: Eventually. When she does become it though, the only thing that can stop her is unconsciousness or death. Really. This is more focused on in the manga particularly when fighting against the mad clown and destroying Arachne, where her absolute grim determination tops everything else (in the anime they changed it to "courage").
    • The manga has Arachne stating that courage cannot win every battle. Considering Maka's current dilemma in the Book of Eibon, it looks like she had a point; bravery isn't the problem here.
    • Nope, by chapter 75, she fixes it with determination/courage.
      • Actually deconstructed, because she finds it by accepting that she needs to work with Soul in order to win, overcoming the influences of the Book. It wasn't purely about standing up to the bad guy.
  • Does Not Like Men: Due to her issues with her father.
    • It's not quite extended to men in general. Only the ones who act inappropriately get Maka-Chopped or otherwise punished. Some, like Stein, Kid, Soul to an extent Maka has little problem with.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: At least to some, Maka's scythe-spinning is reminiscent of color guard flag-spinning.
  • Everything's Better with Spinning
  • Expressive Hair: In the anime her pigtails stand up and/or wiggle when she's agitated.
  • Fan Service: While Maka was mainly an aversion of this starting from the first chapter, recent color pages have been showing her...um...development. Especially with the color page of Square Enix for Chapter 77, where her outfit looks quite similar to Yoko's.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric.
  • Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi
  • Generation Xerox: Somewhat, with her mother.
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The Envy Chapter forces Maka to acknowledge her envy of the other meisters who want to be Soul's partner, people like Liz who can appreciate music with Soul, and music itself.
  • Green Eyes
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Her mother is a human while her father is a weapon. Slightly averted in that she doesn't seem to be any different to other humans. (Well to be fair, in Soul Eater the "weapons" are just people with the special power to transform. They're still human.)
    • In the anime, she can unlock a weapon form while she's asleep.
  • Hammerspace: Where does that book come from?
  • The Heroine
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Maka has a lot of secret insecurities about her strength as a meister. Something of a Tear Jerker in how it came about, illustrated by her seeming inability to pull of one of her signature moves, and coming after a period of Maka having gained much greater confidence and increased ability in the areas which troubled her earlier on; see how she handles both Arachne and Gopher.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Might not be as outlandish as other characters' cases (e.g. Kim fights with something identified as a lamp and Kilik with twin pots), but if you consider that a scythe is a legitimate agricultural hand tool, this could be applicable.
  • Joshikousei: In the manga, after becoming part of Spartoi.
  • Lamarck Was Right: She gains the ability of Demon Hunter, which was created by her mother.
    • This is the case, as with the demonslayer wavelength, only in the anime. The manga doesn't (...or has yet to) make this connection between Maka's rare skills and her mother.
    • Also in the anime her weapon form
  • Let's Get Dangerous: Does this a lot after becoming part of Spartoi. Particularly when she learns to fly. At first she creates these cute fluffy wings that she's determined to keep (Soul, naturally, hates them)... and then the bad guys show up. The cute fluffy wings change into something else rather quickly.
  • Magic Skirt: In the anime.
  • Odango: Temporarily donned this while studying for the exams
  • The Only One Allowed to Face You: Maka to Crona after hir Face Heel Turn and complete descent into madness. She's so determined to get Crona back to hir senses that, while hunting for hir along with a few other Spartoi members in Italy, she pretends not to know where Crona is when she's actually found hir right away, and sends the others on a Wild Goose Chase to ensure their confrontation remains one-on-one; she even goes without Soul. The only ones aware of her determination (Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki) respect her decision to fight alone, but make themselves available in case things go south.
  • Open the Iris: Averted with her normally invisible pupils becoming visible when emotionally shocked.
  • Panty Shot: Source for this in the manga. Not a very reliable source, mind you - the fan service in general gets toned down as the series progresses, and Maka was never exactly Ms. Fanservice to begin with. The anime averts this, however, instead using the Magic Skirt trope.
  • Pettanko: Compared to the other girls in the cast, anyway. And this anxiety is played-up in the manga.
  • Power Gives You Wings
  • Precision F-Strike: Both in the Hungarian dub, which has plenty of Cluster F Bombing. Her first was "I'm gonna kick... HER ASS!" The other one was "Go crawl into a cunt!"
  • Sailor Fuku: After joining Spartoi
  • She Cleans Up Nicely (As seen in the Ballroom Blitz-esque episode)
  • She's Got Legs: The anime especially likes to remind us of this.
  • Ship Tease: With Soul. And how. The Wikia entries for both Maka and Soul make it explicitly clear, no matter what Ohkubo says (as if his throwing himself on top of her to protect her from certain death and her worry that other female meisters might be better suited weren't hint enough):

It is hinted that the two may share romantic feelings towards each other, although it is never stated in general.

Eventually she came around and vowed to follow Kim wherever she chose to go.

Back to Soul Eater
  1. in the anime, at least. They melt the way you'd expect them to in the manga. Makes you wonder why someone as obsessive as Kid would even use candles for decorating.
