Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Seasonal Rot: While McKeever's run garnered a loyal fanbase through the combination of likeable characters, believable interactions, the joy found in the mundane life of superhero tangentials, and extremely cute art, the second team didn't do much to build up either the existing or its own fanbase. The art was cute, but not nearly as lively as Takeshi Miyazawa or David Hahn's, the writing was okay, but not nearly as vivid as McKeevers, the overall effect was meh. Combined with One More Day, which happened right around the same time, it seemed like Marvel had no idea what to do with the series (or Mary Jane, or Spider-Man...). Given the fantastic variant first cover of the second series, it seems quite a shame that Alphona left comics right at that moment, though given the scripts it's unlikely even he could have built much of a following.
  • The Untwist: Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
  • Wangst: Averted, for the most part; although the aforementioned 'Emo Teen' storyline sees Mary Jane indulge in a bit of this - it gets so bad that even a fellow Emo Teen essentially tells her to knock it off.
  • The Woobie: Mary Jane.
