Suikoden V/Characters/The Royal Family

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Royal Family

The Prince

  • The Hero
    • Magnetic Hero: By necessity, with 107 potential recruits available.
  • Almighty Janitor: In a sense. Because he's not in line for the throne he has very little official duties, so he's free to explore and leave the palace or to visit other towns in the Queendom. The Royal family uses this to their advantage at the beginning of the game.
  • Badass: Let us the count the ways, shall we:
  • Battle Couple: The Prince and Lyon are inseparable at least until halfway through the game.
  • Bishounen
  • Blue Eyes
  • Canon Name: Three, depending on the source. The novelization call him "Freyjadour" ("Frey" for short). The manga refers to him as "Ardil". The pre-made save-games released as part of the game's promotion refers to him as "Faroush". Fans have tended to go with Freyjadour since the novelization was released, despite the whole "shortened nickname" thing being impossible to implement in-game.
  • Chick Magnet: Lampshaded so often to the point of becoming a Running Gag.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Some of the dialog choices let the player portray him as one, though this usually results in Lyon getting annoyed with him
  • Combat Medic: With his Dawn Rune, pretty much similar to The Hero of Suikoden II.
  • Continuity Nod: His first alternate costume when he's on disguise is also McDohl's clothes.
  • Despair Event Horizon: He hits this at the end of the game if you have recruited less than 60 Stars of Destiny. Unable to cope with Lyon's death, he wanders off into the frozen Ashtwal Mountains alone, utterly broken by his experiences.
  • Heroic BSOD: He goes through a large amount of trauma throught the story, but he finaly cracks after the events of The New Queen's Campaign: Sialeeds seemingly betrays him and Lyon nearly dies from a stab wound. In a scene after the above spoiler, Luserina tries to reach out to him. After a moment, He simply turns around and walks off; the player is not even given the option to respond (which would normaly happen). Pretty powerful response for a silent protagonist.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: Which Lucretia even advises him on, so he can look more badass.
    • Before this, he was Modest Royalty (at least, compared to his parents, and the rest of the nobility).
  • Improbable Weapon User: How exactly does he wield that three-section staff?
    • A three-section staff is exotic and extremely difficult to use, but not improbable. It's one of the weapons you can learn in many schools of kung fu, after all (A lot of its moves are used for trapping the opponent's weapon). What pushes his weapon into this territory is that the three sections can link together to form a bo staff, making it even more complex to wield. The fact that the Prince can wield this weapon with ease shows just how skilled he is.
  • Infinity Plus One Skill: Royal Paradise is pretty expensive. He's the only one who can equip it and getting it requires you to have at least an A rank on all of his basic skills.
  • The Chosen One
  • Lady Land: As his gender rendered him ineligible to take the throne, he was dismissed as unimportant by certain nobles...
    • Spoiled Sweet: ... but not by his family, who lavished him with just as much attention as his younger sister.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He gains one in his third outfit, the outfit you see in the cover and for the most of the game.
  • Silent Bob: The only thing saving him from being the Heroic Mime is his expressive face.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He really, really takes after his mother, appearance-wise.
  • Warrior Prince: He's pretty badass with his 3 section staff.
  • The Wise Prince
  • White-Haired Pretty Boy: Who arguably has some White-Haired Pretty Girl connotations.

Crown Princess Lymsleia Falenas

Queen Arshtat Falenas

Ferid Egan

  • Asskicking Equals Authority: To get engaged to Arshat (and thus, to become the Commander of the Queen's Knights) he had to win the Sacred Games.
  • Badass Family
  • Curtains Match the Window
  • Dark Horse Victory: His victory in the Sacred Games came as a severe shock to the local aristocracy, who expected one of the gladiators hired to represent one of their own to win; needless to say, while he has become popular with the public since then, many of the nobility still resent him.
  • Defusing the Tykebomb: Helped a Nether Gate castoff named Mismar become a normal girl.
  • Domestic Abuse: He is literally incinerated by his Sun Rune-crazed wife, Arshtat.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Happily Married
  • Hot Dad: YES.
  • Mysterious Past: A citizen of the Island Nations Federation, he keeps his family background a secret to avoid political complications, going simply by "Ferid".
    • Secret Other Family: He was the eldest son of Admiral Skald Egan of the Island Nations, thereby making Bernadette his younger sister.
  • One-Man Army: In his youth, during the invasion of Falena by bordering Armes, he practically saved the nation single-handedly by fighting on the front lines of the war as Commander of the Queen's Knights.
  • The Promise: He made an arrangement with Georg that he was to kill Arshtat should she lose her sanity while in control of the Sun Rune, in case he was otherwise incapacitated. Georg reluctantly agreed.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Actually accepts the criticisms levied at him and his wife and encourages his knights to speak honestly.

Lady Sialeeds Falenas

  • Auntie Bear: This is definitely in evidence during the early part of the game, and a significant reason for her dramatic Face Heel Turn is because of her desire to protect her young niece and nephew.
  • Badass Family: She's Queen Arshtat's younger sister and the Prince & Lymsleia's aunt.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: She accomplishes all of her objectives, breaks the power of the nobility and allows Lymsleia to reform the Queendom's government.
  • Blow You Away: She specialises in Wind Rune magic.
  • Christmas Cake: Mentioned by a few characters, who refer to her as the Prince's "old auntie", much to her annoyance.
  • Crutch Character: Starts out as a fairly powerful long-range fighter, as well as a decent spellcaster, but is saddled with an irremovable Wind Rune. And she ditches your party halfway through the game.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Expository Hairstyle Change
  • Face Heel Turn, albeit for Necessarily Evil reasons
  • The Fashionista: Even Josephine is mightily impressed that she designs and creates her own gowns.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her kimono-esque outfit.
  • Hello, Nurse!
  • It's Personal: She utterly despises Lucretia Merces, mostly because it was she who convinced her sister Arshtat to take up the Sun Rune in the first place...
  • Maiden Aunt: Following the violent Falenan War of Succession, she vowed to never marry or have children.
  • Ms Exposition: Her main role outside of court is to accompany her young nephew and act as his advisor, usually indicating how the team should progress.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Not a Morning Person: Generally, she's very upbeat but has a habit of punching those who wake her early. People thank you for not making them wake her up.
  • Oba-san: ....although she probably wouldn't appreciate the implications of this title.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: She wears her tousled, honey blonde hair in a high pony-tail that falls (sexily) over one side of her face.
  • Promotion to Parent
  • Rings of Death: She wields a pair of chakram in combat.
  • Secret Relationship: Is implied to be in one with Kyle.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She confesses to Lucretia that she didn't think the Prince could properly clean up the Senate without problems down the road, so took matters into her own hands for the sake of the Queendom.
  • White-Haired Pretty Girl: With White-Haired Pretty Boy connotations.

Lady Haswar Falenas, the Oracle

  • Badass Family
    • Badass Pacifist: She is NOT a fighter, but does everything in her power to peacefully resist the Godwins.
  • Blue Eyes
  • Cuteness Proximity: Really into the beavers.
  • Good Shepherdess: She's shown to be extremely kind and compassionate to those under her care.
  • Maiden Aunt: Like her cousin Sialeeds, she has pledged to never marry or have children for the sake of stability in the Queendom. Despite this, Haswar holds no grudges against her surviving family.
  • Miko: Of a sort, due to the religeous role she plays in her society.
  • Saintly Church: Her enclave at Lunas.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She has a lovely, friendly nature.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To her cousin, Queen Arshtat.
  • Succession Crisis: As the daughter of Crown Princess Shahrewar, Haswar should have eventually become Queen. Thanks to the machinations of Shahrewar's younger sister Falzrahm and the violent succession struggle that erupted after her grandmother's passing, this never came to be.
  • White-Haired Pretty Girl

The Queen's Knights

Lyon/Mismar

Georg Prime

Miakis

  • Action Girl
  • Badass
  • Little Miss Badass: She's Older Than She Looks, but the trope still applies compared to the other Queen's Knights.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite being the most cheerful out of the Queen's Knights, she got that job (as well as being the personal bodyguard to the heiress to the Queendom) for a very good reason. Best seen when she cheerfully threatens (with one of her knives) to toss Euram into a river after he gets a little too close when trying to court the ten year old Lymsleia. She would have been chosen as a Dragon Knight too if she wasn't female.
  • Bodyguard Babe: She is Princess Lymsleia's personal bodyguard.
  • Break the Cutie: Has a heartwrenching breakdown when forced to face the prince in a duel.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: She's far more carefree and lackdaisical than Lyon.
  • Duel Boss
  • Fighting Your Friend
  • The Gadfly
  • Hot Amazon: Rog is attracted to her because she beat up most of the boys in their hometown when they were kids.
  • Knife Nut: She wields two Ghurka-type, curved daggers.
  • Magic Knight: The one of the best magic users out of the Knights, and has a decent attack.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Albeit mostly playfully.
  • Plucky Girl
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Ever cheerful and outgoing, she always does her job with polite words and a nice, big smile -- even when she's got a dagger to your throat.
  • Unwitting Pawn: It's heavily implied that Gizel engineered her presence at Doraat and allowed her defection so that she would spread the truth of what she'd seen during the coup -- including how she witnessed Georg stabbing the Queen.
