Is this a Trope or a Useful Note?

I would have leaned toward calling this a Useful Note, but the writer has chosen to call it a Trope (commenting out the Useful Notes tag). I can see arguments either way.

If it's a trope, it needs examples in fiction... and, amazingly enough, Wikipedia has a list that we can use as a starting point with appropriate credit. EDIT: Although that page has both Examples and Shout-Outs, so we can't just copy it over as-is.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I would've gone with Useful Notes myself, simply on the basis of it being a real-life event.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

I 2nd Umbire.

DartzIRL (talkcontribs)

It's supposed to be useful note. I think I wanted to put it somewhere where it could be worked on rather than being live because it'll need a few days work to get right - it seemed Trope Workshop would be the best since it could be worked on.

We could do it that way, sure. I'd be inclined to move this page to "Chernobyl Disaster (Useful Notes)" and make a much shorter page "Chernobyl Disaster" for the lists of examples and shout-outs.

Preferences, everyone?

Derivative (talkcontribs)

If you're going to do that, name the shorter page C...D... (trope) as opposed to just C...D... to make it easier to distinguish.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I thought we had something in the style guide or somewhere else saying we don't use "(trope)" as a pagename suffix, but I can't find it in a quick search. Maybe I imagined it.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

We have, on a few occasions, used "(trope)", such as The Cape (trope), when it was absolutely necessary for disambiguation to work. We still discourage it.

I can't remember where, either.

Carlb (talkcontribs)

I suppose The Cape (garment) or The Cape (costume) would be enough to distinguish it from individual works (or individual geographic locations) named "The Cape".

And then there's the whole question of handling titles with multiple possible spellings: Chornobyl or Chernobyl? I believe Ukrainian uses the former, or its Cyrillic Alphabet equivalent.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Wouldn't the Chernobyl spelling issue just be a matter of redirects?

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Yeah, I think a trope page made separate from the Useful Notes and named accordingly to avoid potentially clunky suffixing would work out IMO.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

A potential third solution if we want to avoid the mixup between Useful Notes and Trope entirely is making the UN part of the page an Analysis subpage of the trope instead.

Not my #1 option, but it's there.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Double posted, but yeah, that's not a too bad idea.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Miraheze is planning on renaming itself the 503 wikisite, did you hear about it ;)

Carlb (talkcontribs)

On the {{trope}} template, the standard subpages (as listed in the "Create New" dropdown) look to be /Analysis /Haiku /Headscratchers /Image_Links /Laconic /Playing_With /Quotes /Useful_Notes plus the various individual types of works (from Animé to Real Life).

The usual pattern is for the trope or work to be on the main page; if there's Analysis or Useful_Notes on the exact same topic it is most often a subpage. That may be because this wiki is "all the tropes" and not "all the useful notes" or an attempt to write an encyclopaedia.

Disambiguation is used if the pages are about two or more different topics - so Safe Harbor (DMCA) is not Safe Harbor (broadcasting) is not Safe Harbor (TV series). Likewise, The Spy Who Loved Me (novel) is not The Spy Who Loved Me (film). Even then, there has to be a better disambiguator than "(Useful Notes)" unless the intent were to create an /Analysis or /Useful_Notes subpage with the underlying trope on the main page?

DartzIRL (talkcontribs)

I...

Just wanted a draftbox where I could stick it and feck with it until it was done. It's sort of turning into a massive wall of text but it will be done.

It could probably go live half-finished if needs be because I'm slower than fucking continental drift

And here I thought a little Science-Fact would be easier than Science Fiction.

There's also the Chernobyl show- which does deserve it's own trope page.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Well, you have your draftbox and the freedom of said fecking around, and we're just discussing exactly what should be done with it down the line. I'm not seeing any major problems in that regard.

On that note, it sounds like we're in agreement with making it a trope page with a Useful Notes subpage. (Unless I'm wrong, in which case please correct me posthaste.) As far as the show, we'll cross that bridge before long, I'm sure.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Fair enough. I'll ignore the page for a few days...

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Is five months enough days, Rob? <grin>

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I believe I mentioned elsewhere that I'm busy... :)

@DartzIRL, do you want to do anything else with this page?

DartzIRL (talkcontribs)

Technically yes.

One of these days I'll find the energy to actually do what I want to do with this.

Technically, it's mostly done.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Let's move it into the mainspace, then. You can always polish the prose later, and other people will pay more attention to the article if it's there.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I'll move it now.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Already done, and I've added an appropriate inbound link to Artistic License Nuclear Physics, too.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

...I think we just crossed wires here, because I just did it, too... I wonder which version is live now.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Looks like I did the actual move and you caught some text that I missed deleting.

Group effort.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

MediaWiki is smarter than I expected...

Okay, it's been almost three months...

... since the last substantial edit on this page. Is it in any condition to launch as a Useful Note?
