Real-life animals

Calling humans "over the top ugly" is obviously offensive and in case of celebrities this is likely to become flame bait. All right, I accept this.

But what about animals? Not necessarily pets, but rather things like anglerfish? Would it be appropriate and safe to call them this? After all, there are a couple of creatures that most people find pretty ugly. Or do you think there is still a flame bait risk, or Unfortunate Implications coming from that?

After all, people have difficulty empathizing with ugly creatures, and calling them ugly in public may further impair people's consciousness that these animals still have a right to live in some way... Cute animals are more likely to get protected from human-caused extinction... "What measure is a non-cute?"

So, in how far does "No real-life examples" include non-human ones?

There's a YMMV Trope called Ugly Cute. I think Real Life examples of animals are allowed.
