Disambiguation project finally done

19
Derivative (talkcontribs)

After over 2000+ articles that had links to this disambiguation page have finally sorted hopefully, according to the What Links Here part of Make List on AWB being empty disregarding Sandbox. I therefore would like to know what course of action should be next on this page, also I want my ego validated because I spent hours upon hours doing shit that no one else would even bother trying. Also this was exhausting.

As to the first question, I'm not sure myself, might need to ask some of my fellow admins.

As for the second item:

immediately goes prostrate and waving his arms in devotion

WE ARE NOT WORTHY! WE ARE NOT WORTHY!

But seriously, outstanding job, we owe you a massive thank you, and I will be linking this very page to the forums where a lot of our admins hang out so they can all know how hard a job you did for us.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

First instinct is to redirect this to Humans are the Real Monsters, but we can figure out with that discussion.

The ATT forums or is there some kind of Miraheze forums? I haven't posted on either especially the later if that does even exist.

Hey, that's more praise/recognition than I ever get at ED, you just get left to your own devices half the time, or otherwise just get the equivalent of mocking.

No worries, if I carry on procrastinating over this half-term from doing college hw/assignments, I'll be doing Fight Club next, as that has 555 pages to disambig according to AWB, a smaller project than last but still more than I imagined. One advantage we should strive for over TVT is that we are more convenient for the user (especially since we use MediaWiki over PMWiki), disambiguating should be a higher priority. Shame no-one is answering that call on the site-notice.

A lot of us hang out on the Drunkard's Walk forums, run by admin Bob "Looney Toons" Schroeck.

Here's where I let them know what a good job you did:

If you want to join up, I'd be happy to put a good word in for you, and I agree, you have some good advice.

As for redirecting, you have a point, but there is supposed to be small yet crucial difference between the two terms.

"Humans Are Bastards" is when humans are given a chance to decide how to act and choose the most horrible way to conduct themselves.

Example: In the book 1984, it is confirmed in the book climax the villains are consciously being cruel because they want to maintain a grip on power, know they are being cruel, and reveling in it because it confirms they do indeed have power over the lives and even minds of others.

"Humans Are The Real Monsters" is when they are compared to some other, non-human species and they come off looking like the biggest kicker of puppies by comparison.

Example: A Twilight Zone episode had some aliens shut off all the power on a few city blocks, merely to see how the humans would react to it. They reverted to killing and suspecting one another of all sorts of things, and the aliens sadly conclude it takes very little for humans to turn on one another.

"Same guy as the one on the sysops from ED" - Have I become that infamous LOL. Have I been mentioned before or something?

I would like to know what the forums are about first I have no idea XD. I need explaining everything mate like I'm retarded.

Also I did redirect everything linking to that to either Jerkass or HATRM because HAB is just a disambig page and nothing else, ATT decided to remove all content bar the disambig, otherwise I wouldn't have done this. This is why I suggested the redirect.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Well, it is one of your most notable stomping grounds, and your aren't the first ED sysop to grace us with your presence, so I thought I'd let people know this isn't your first time on a wiki. :)

The DW forums are mostly devoted to Bob's own fanfiction series, but the ATT specific stuff goes in the non political, general chatter board, which is where I mostly hang out, though if you want to talk politics, they have a board for that too.

Good idea on those redirects. HAB is basically a general, overarching term, while those are more specific (called subtropes), so you were more accurate anyway.

Just the way you said "Yes" like I somehow happen to have become known throughout the internet, you really did make my ego validated lol.

Ah I see, Probably not at this point for various reasons, but I'll let you know if I do, and I see you have a lot of ATT threads there jesus.

I imagine it was Junius who graced you right?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Glad I could be of service to your pride. :)

And yeah, we've had so many ATT threads we needed a subforum to archive them all.

Yeah it was Junius (as Micheal Suarez).

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Good to know my guess is right.

Only thing is is that the forum software makes the threads a pain to read, as someone who is used to Xenforo and the like.

How many actual links to disambigs are there? saying it as over 9000+ while understandable as a meme is vastly underestimating me as me and my friend stopped bothering after 20000+. Like seriously when I said it is a priority I wasn't saying it as an ego exercise, it's a serious issue atm.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

It's well over 50,000+ pages.

Don't worry, you are getting some help very soon, going to unleash Gethbot to work on The Simpsons redirects.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Hello Lulzkiller!

As the admin who put that notice up in the first place (because I was getting overwhelmed by the amount of work and I have another wiki to administer as well), I thank you sincerely for taking so much of this work on your own shoulders.

And even after Gethbot cleans up those Simpsons links, I expect we'll have over 49,000 links to fix. I'll edit the notice a bit.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

I didn't mean to force your hand there, I apologise, I wasn't trying to insinuate that you guys weren't busy with other shit either, I too have to administrate ED, along with all my IRL tasks.

It's OK, I owed Geth a favour regardless. I should point out to you Rob that my main areas of expertise are in the more technical aspects like this and not in the more vague creative aspects of Troping, so I apologise for my lack of knowledge in these fields and for any confusion created.

I hope the bot is able to tell which one to link to, considering the situation it is placed in, as I had to manually judge each one, which is why it took so long even with AWB.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

No worries. You've put in hours of work; that banner update took less than a minute.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Found out as of time of writing it is over 51,000. I don't know how many will be left after gethbot is finished with it's current job.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Not to worry. I plan to cut the number down by at least 10,000 to 25,000 (very rough estimate), depending on how many of the disambiguations are franchise specific pages, since I've already figured out how to get Gethbot to zero in fixing those with little input from me.

The good news is that getting all those done will reduce the backlog dramatically.

Already got about 1,100 pages fixed with "The Simpsons" franchise pages alone.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Yeah that'd by 1/5 or 1/2, which is great either way.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

And as the guy coming in a the back, let me just add my thanks, LulzKiller -- not just for the task you took on, but because in doing so, you unearthed a lot of pages I hadn't been to before, and which I have been cleaning up as I sweep along in your wake. One of my self-appointed tasks as an admin is stylistic consistency between pages, and every page that you made appear on Recent Changes that I wouldn't normally come across is one more I won't have to stumble across five years from now and groan at.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

I noticed you liked the template of tropelist!

Quite understandable enough, keeping everything consistent is a noble goal, if hard enough.

I was more worried that it was annoying you that I was doing hundreds of pages a day that you had to comb through.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

It's a bit of a challenge, yes. But not annoying, no.
