Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
(Redirected from Talk:Wikia)

While I understand there's a lot of legitimate grievances against Wikia (honestly, I share many of those myself), the current state of the page makes Wikia seem one-sidedly irredeemable. I feel like there could (and should) be a way to dial back the excessive criticism of Wikia in a way that touches on their badly regarded policies without seeming like the product of a grudge, while not entertaining censorship in any form. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 01:07, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps it would help if the people who added these tropes explained why they apply to Wikia: Awesome Personnel Carrier, Law of Wiki Expansion, Locked Pages, Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement, Vitalizing Edit, Wiki Magic, Wiki Curator, Wiki Vandal. If those tropes are named without explanation, but the bit about Uncyclopedia being Screwed by the Network is properly explained, it does look as if the Screwed by the Network trope is being given more weight... but the answer is to expand the others, not remove the info from the entries which are properly presented in context. Unfortunately, I can't make that change as I have no idea what the context of these tropes on Wikia may be or why they were added to the article. Carlb (talk) 15:41, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
Locked Pages shouldn't be on the list at all - it's an ATT-internal page, and by its very nature cannot apply to anything other than All The Tropes. Similarly, All The Tropes:Strong Language Usage Rules is one of our sort-of-but-not-really-policy pages, and we don't set the rules for Wikia. I'll hang a cleanup tag on the page, giving a summary of what's been posted here so far. --Robkelk (talk) 16:04, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
I figured you might know, given you were responsible for most of the recent edits...
More to the point, yes, I was hinting that I leaned more towards expansion over outright removal, and why remove when you can reword in a way that preserves the information and context while balancing the slant? --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 17:15, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
I will likely have to leave that "expansion" to others. My exposure to Wikia involves primarily communities that don't fit with their rebrand to FANDOM, most of which have now moved elsewhere. Any discussion of Wikia from a content perspective needs to address whatever they're hosting this week, so should be left to those currently involved with that content. That's a fair enough sentiment, yeah. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 21:32, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Think of the Advertisers!

For legal reasons, I shall not be editing this page myself today, but a link to the new trope might be a worthy addition to one of the existing entries. It would fit the existing entry on "Moral Guardians" where "a long list of wikis shut down outright lest their content offend Wikia's advertisers" currently links Internet Ads and should, instead, link to Think of the Advertisers!
