The Cat in the Hat (film)/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about The Cat in the Hat (film) are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Can't Unhear It: Fans ironically like to think of Mike Myers when they read the Cat's lines.
  • Cult Classic: It has gained a following among early 2000s kids, Mike Myers fans and Dr. Seuss fans.
  • Director Displacement: Those who haven't heard of Bo Welch might have believed Jeff Schaffer, David Mandel and Alec Berg directed it just like Eurotrip.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse:
    • Mr. Humberfloob is a scene-stealer for his "You're FIRRRRRRRRE-DUH" catchphrase.
    • Mrs. Kwan is another since she is one of the least annoying characters.
  • Fountain of Memes:
    • The Cat played by Mike Myers became one because of his frequent usage of innuendos in a kids' movie, notably the "dirty hoe" quote.
    • Mr. Humberfloob due to his energy and that his character became more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Friendly Fandoms: It has one with Eurotrip, made by the exact same writers.
  • Funny Aneurysm Moment: The two Things dressed up as police officers to distract Joan and one of them was choking a piece of paper while saying "I can't breathe".
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: With the COVID-19 pandemic, many fans joked that the movie is set after the pandemic since Mr. Humberfloob washes his hands and cleanliness is a major part of the film.
  • Memetic Badass: The Cat is shown in tons of memes as using a baseball bat to beat up enemies.
  • Memetic Molester: The Cat acts a bit like a child predator in the film to a degree.
  • Misblamed: Many critics thought that Mike Myers wrote in the adult jokes but it was actually the three screenwriters.
  • Never Live It Down: This is a textbook example of how not to adapt a children's book.
  • Signature Scene: The Kupkakeinator scene.
  • Signature Song: "Fun Fun Fun".
  • So Bad It's Good: The Austin Powers-like style of humor mixed with Dr. Seuss' charm can make this badly fun.
  • Sophomore Slump: Unlike the How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie by Ron Howard, this second and last Dr. Seuss live-action film had a big dip in quality.
  • Spiritual Licensee: Aside from the trace of Dr. Seuss, people could consider it the closest to an Austin Powers 4.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Seeing the Cat getting hit by a boy's baseball bat at his crotch and getting outed by the kids is so satisfying to watch.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Given that Mike Myers is a fan of the original book, we can feel bad that he was trying his best in a terrible Dr. Seuss movie.
  • Uncanny Valley:
    • Mike Myers with the Cat make-up is quite disturbing.
    • The Things don't look that good, either.
  • Uncertain Audience: The film can't decide if it's for children (the key demographic of Dr. Seuss fans) or adults (the demographic of Eurotrip).
  • Vindicated by History: While still not considered a masterpiece, many agree that it had some great humor despite being a bad Dr. Seuss adaptation.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Say what you want about the film, but the cinematography and opening titles are that good.
  • Watch It for the Meme: Like Bee Movie, people just watch it for the various quotes and memes it came from.
  • What Do You Mean It's for Kids?: The film is filled with tons of innuendos and dirty jokes; many critics thought the film should have been rated PG-13 or even an R. It doesn't help that it has the screenwriters of Eurotrip, which is completely unsuitable for children.
  • WTH Casting: Mike Myers was an unsuitable choice for the Cat given that most of his humor is adult-oriented even though he voiced another kids' book icon Shrek two years before this film came out. Jim Carrey was well-cast for the Grinch but Mike Myers as the Cat in the Hat was a step backwards.
