The Exorcist/Tear Jerker

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Merrin's Death. Especially to both Karras and Pazuzu. For the latter, he's shocked that he just killed his most hated adversary after years of battling him. For the former, this was the last straw for Karras. He couldn't prevent his own mother's death, he started having a crisis of faith, he's witnessing an innocent twelve year old Regan deteriorate from what he thought at first to be a mental disease before seeing with his own eyes something he thought wasn't even real. To top it off a fellow priest and a known legend that even he respects despite his initial disbelief has died fighting a demon he's fought since his youth. This gave him enough resolve to fight back and sacrifice his own life to drive the demon out of her.
  • Karras' own death as well. As a result of the above tear jerker, he resorts to literally beating the possession out of Regan until Pazuzu possesses him. After a brief moment where he almost kills her, Karras takes his body back briefly and throws himself out the window to stop the demon. To make matters worse he was still alive until Father Dyer a fellow priest and a friend tearfully gives him his Last Rites. All the while, Regan who was freed as the result reacts as if she's woken out of a horrible nightmare and all she could do was curl up in a corner crying for her mother.
