Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

WARNING! There are unmarked Spoilers ahead. Beware.

Characters from The Gamers Alliance include:

Grand Alliance

Blades of Vigilance

Axikasha "Ax" Keiran

"This scar is mine to bear. A reminder of my crimes, my mistakes. It stays."

A feisty, scarred warrior who has a rather complex romantic life and who wields the magic blade Dawn. She is one of the prominent members of the Alliance and often the voice of reason as well as a strategist who isn't afraid to play dirty if needed. She drinks often and has a short temper but is a competent leader who is trusted by her comrades.

Associated tropes:

  • Action Girl: Ax is a spunky example of one.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Ax's magic sword Dawn is very effective against minions of the God of War.
  • Bi the Way: Although Ax certainly has had many close encounters with men, she has also had feelings for Queen Shyla of Libaterra, which led her to help Shyla during the Libaterran Civil War.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Heavily implied by her dialogue with Queen Shyla when she acted as her bodyguard. She sometimes dreams of her and when she finds out Shyla might still be alive, she is quite torn about the fact.
  • The Captain: She used to be one during the Libaterran Civil War. Lately she's been leading the Blades of Vigilance, a group of knights and mages who wish to hamper the evil Totenkopfs' plans in any way possible.
  • Childhood Friend: With Viirsa.
  • Cool Horse: She used to have Widowmaker aka Dubya until the horse was fatally injured in battle.
  • Cool Sword: Dawn.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: This in part leads her to tag along as a bodyguard for Shyla and later makes her join the Alliance and form the Blades of Vigilance.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Since she's living in a rather messed-up romantic drama (not to mention the brutality of the war in general), she does this often.
  • Hearing Voices: At one point she heard voices of the dead in her head thanks to her home tribe's spiritual ability. However, she hasn't heard the voices much since the Cataclysm although it is unclear whether the ability has weakened or her mind has grown more resistant in the ensuing years.
  • The Ladette: Very much so. She drinks, curses, acts and fights dirty, talks casually to higher ups and even gods and flirts with many guys and girls. However, this boisterous and seemingly carefree attitude masks the fact that she has lived a hard life with many tragic choices which have wounded her but which she refuse to tell others except on a select few occasions.
  • Love Triangle: With Khalid, Marcus, and Refan. She had it rough, particularly because she was forced to marry one of those three. And let's not add her lingering feelings for Shyla into the equation...
  • Parental Substitute: Ax has been taking care of her friend Viirsa's daughter Kaisa.
  • Reasoning with God: She does this to Shakkan, the God of Beasts, and convinces him to spare her companions in exchange for offering his people, the Sirithai, a chance to expand their territory and strike at those who have been persecuting them.
  • Scars Are Forever: Ax has a nasty scar in her face. Although she could go to the white mages to heal it, she chooses to keep it as a reminder of her past mistakes.
  • Self-Made Orphan: She killed her father Arthaniel during a battle when they found themselves on the opposite sides of the Libaterran Civil War. It was during this duel that she received her infamous scar.
  • Trash Talk: Ax tends to resort to this whenever she fights.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Ax's sword Dawn shatters during the clash with the ice elemental, and it takes until the adventure in the Ruined Kingdom when the god Hephaestus restores the sword to its former shape.

Kaisa Blackwell

A girl who lost her parents during the Great War and was raised by likable albeit swearing pirates. She has a foul mouth but has calmed down considerably since she began training to become a white mage. She is one of the few Alliance members to truly show compassion, a trait which made her befriend and tame a dire wolf which became her guardian pet.

Associated tropes:

  • Big Badass Wolf: She has a dire wolf named Liulfr as a pet.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Implied in the story. She has had weird dreams of events that haven't taken place yet, but it's unclear as of now whether the dreams should be interpreted literally or figuratively.
  • Mouthy Kid: She swears like a sailor. She grew among feisty pirates, after all.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mom died giving birth to her, and her dad is nowhere to be found.
  • Plucky Girl: Very much so.
  • White Magic: She has begun using such spells lately in the story.

Rhylian Loras

"We've lived in isolation long enough. I can't stay here any longer, watching our people fade away one by one."

An elven archer who left her forest home to search for a cure to the Blood Fever, a fatal disease that affects elves. Although distrustful of humans at first, she eventually befriended many of them and opened up considerably. She is determined and isn't afraid to speak her mind when she thinks someone is being wronged.

Associated tropes:

Blades of Lysse

"Big" Sal Umber

The bold leader of the Blades of Lysse. Big, determined and jolly, he is an inspiration to his men and always eager to fight for the right cause.

Associated tropes:

Garrel Isen

An aging knight who leads a cavalry regiment. He'll stop at nothing to get the job done and hopes to one day liberate his homeland Aison from the Grey Cult's rule.

Associated tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: Pulls a big one during the battle of Vanna when his cavalry arrives just in time to help the heroes against the army of the Northern Horde.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He may know the world is a crappy place, but that doesn't stop him from fighting for justice.

Ragnar Daenyathos Jaeger

A half-elf warrior who owns an evil weapon which tries to turn him from the light. He shares a past with the Alliance but has lately joined the Blades of Lysse in hopes to liberating the world from evil.

Associated tropes:

Church of the Memory of Cardia

Jonathan Ferron

"Your opinion has no weight."

A man with ambition who is willing to do whatever necessary to reach his goals. He used to be a cleric of Mardük until he was betrayed. After that he played a game of deception and used both heroes and villains for his own ends while pretending to work for both. In the end his plans backfired spectacularly but he still managed to become the head of a powerful church. His plans for taking over Remon through politics failed thanks to the Proninist invasion and he decided to travel around with the Alliance with hopes of finding something with which to advance his complex plans. Although he and many members of the Alliance distrust each other, he's secretly torn between being a true ally of the Alliance and the exploiter of heroes in a quest for power. It doesn't stop him from trying to take advantage of people every now and then, though, when it suits his needs.

Associated tropes:

  • Avenging the Villain: Ferron initially plotted to kill Refan who had killed Ferron's loved one Dorecia. However, he got over this obsession over time even though he's still bitter about it and hasn't forgiven Refan.
  • Becoming the Mask: He nearly ended up like this as he learned to like many of his teammates during the Great War while posing as a good guy. However, in the end he chose to subvert this development and betrayed them for the sake of revenge and most heroes who witnessed said event ended up dead. It's something that still troubles him although he's kept his feelings about it bottled inside.
  • False Friend: He is this to Refan during the Great War, making him trust him while in fact plotting against him and the Alliance. It was all part of a plan to have revenge on both Refan and the Clergy of Mardük.
  • Magic Knight: Although skilled in swordplay, Ferron is also well versed in magic.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He knows how to influence people by pulling the right strings.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Many heroes in the Alliance know of Ferron's dark past and don't trust him but they know his importance for keeping peace in Remonton and can't just kill him. He's also shown himself to be a capable teammate whose knowledge of the dark arts has often helped the heroes in tight spots. However, he's working for the heroes only for his own gain and plans to get rid of them when the time is right.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He became the high cleric of the Church of the Memory of Cardia and is a highly respected man in Remon. If the Proninists and Marcus hadn't come to cause trouble simultaneously, he would've become the Steward of Remonton and eventually a tyrant of the entire country.

Unithien Greyrain

A white mage, daughter of Varalia, and a loyal follower of the Cardian church's teachings. She practically worships high cleric Ferron and is quite idealistic, sometimes clashing with the Alliance's darker members. However, after she has witnessed many dark events and betrayals, she decides to change her outlook on life and becomes more determined to serve the side of what she believes is good. She is conflicted about opposing her mother because they work for different sides, but she nevertheless loves her.

Associated tropes:

  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's a half-elf.
  • Hero Worshipper: Unithien is awed whenever she sees Ferron, the high cleric of her faith, in person, and she considers him one of the wisest men in the world and a truly great leader who inspires his clergy through his actions. However, Ferron is in fact a Villain with Good Publicity who is good at manipulating his cleric underlings such as Unithien who still hasn't realized Ferron's true character.
  • Important Haircut: Unithien cuts her hair and starts dressing in less robe-y clothes, which signifies her growth into a more determined woman. Despite this she still can't put aside a few things which have dominated her life such as her basically worshipping high cleric Ferron, but she's slowly getting better at becoming more and more independent.
  • Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter: Unithien is the daughter of Varalia, one of the prominent villainesses. She grew up apart from her mother when they were separated in her youth. Eventually they found themselves on opposite sides but recognized each other instantly during one conflict where their parties met, but this reunion surprised other heroes who weren't expecting such a connection between the two. Both love each other dearly, but they also lament the fact that they're working for each other's enemies and can't reconcile each other's opposing beliefs. This fact troubles Unithien greatly, and she wonders if there's any way she can find a way to live a normal life with her mother in the war-torn world.
  • The Medic: Her role is primarily that of a healer, and she's proud of all the lives she's saved.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Nesa. Although she's attracted to him for several reasons, she has never acted it out because he already has a girlfriend. She feels she can better help Nesa succeed in his mission by staying friends because any relationship would only complicate their friendship further.
  • White Magic: She excels at casting above average white magic spells.

Order of the Black Rose

Antigonus de Ardyn

"The fate that befell me was in many ways like death... only worse. But I swore that I'd return to have my revenge on the demon who defied me, and that day has finally dawned."

The former leader of the Order of the Black Rose and the older brother of Belial, he is a cunning politician and schemer. He became bitter after he escaped from a dimensional prison and vowed revenge on those who had wronged him. He impersonated Belial for a while in order to win the Grand Alliance's trust and still managed to work out a deal after he was exposed. He is even more mysterious than his brother and as power hungry.

Associated tropes:

  • Avenging the Villain: Sort of, depending on whether you count Belial as a villain or not. This is definitely Antigonus's driving purpose at the moment, though.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Antigonus acted as Belial for a while, fooling the Alliance into trusting him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He really cares for his family members.
  • Familiar: He has a rat familiar called Bifrons who can cast some minor spells.
  • Headbutting Heroes: He doesn't quite get along with Waldheim and has verbal spats with him although not to the same extent as Belial did. It has to do with what happened to them when they were younger.
  • Magic Knight: He is skilled in the use of both magic and sword.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He wins the Matheson Crime Family's trust when he helps them invade Jardine after the Grand Alliance has left for Vanna. He poses as Belial to win the Alliance's trust and even after being exposed and imprisoned, he manages to make a deal with his captors. He goes so far as to plant seeds of doubt in Razoul and Rain's mind when he implies that he made them fall in love simply because he was bored while being imprisoned and wanted to amuse himself in order to pass the time.
  • Not Quite Dead: Antigonus was presumed dead after his climactic clash with Omaroch in the Order's headquarters. However, he ended up in another dimension in which he spent quite a few years until a magical surge made it possible for him to return to the Land of the Living. Too bad he never got to reunite with Belial because by that time Belial was already dead. This understandably pissed him off.
  • Promotion to Parent: Antigonus was this to his younger brother Belial when their parents died. He took care of him, helped him study magic and worked hard to provide both of them a better future. When the two got older, the parental status faded, and they became brothers who remained close until the very end.
  • Sibling Team: With Belial before Antigonus was sealed into another plane of existence.

Belial de Ardyn

"I'll rebuild my Order even if I have to drown the whole world in blood."

A contemplative red mage with a shrouded past and dubious motives, he appears in the lives of the heroes and convinces them to help him combat the menace of the Proninist armies and the Totenkopf cult. He succeeds in convincing the heroes to form the Grand Alliance again but it turns out he's only in it for his own good as he wishes to use the Alliance's resources to strengthen his secret order. He ends up entangled too deep in the Totenkopfs' plans, however, and is killed off. Despite this his legacy has left its mark on many people, most notably his servant Khalid who turns out to be his son and heir.

Associated tropes:

  • Ancient Conspiracy: He leads the Order of the Black Rose which has been behind various political machinations over the years.
  • Anti-Hero: Although Belial works for the Grand Alliance, he does it for selfish reasons and is more than willing to slaughter a few people in order to make his Order grow more powerful.
  • Avenging the Villain: Belial has sworn to hunt down Omaroch who killed Belial's would-be tyrant brother Antigonus. He never manages to fulfill his blood oath, however, because he is betrayed and assassinated in Maar Sul City.
  • Berserk Button: Those who insulted his dead lover Razia quickly learned to regret doing so.
  • Death Is Dramatic: Being betrayed by one's niece and falling off a tower certainly counts.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He ends up getting stabbed by his niece Desdemona who turns out to be a Totenkopf mole.
  • Familiar: He has a raven familiar called Valefor who acts as his eyes and ears in places which he can't reach.
  • Headbutting Heroes: He doesn't really get along with Waldheim and has verbal spats with him. It has to do with what happened to them when they were younger.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: He never manages to finish his final words to his niece because he plummets down from a tower to his death.
  • Magic Knight: Belial is skilled in both spellcasting and close combat.
  • Manipulative Bastard: As skilled in this as his older brother, Belial knows how to get people on his side. His act actually works until the god Nergal exposes his double dealings to the Alliance. His reason for helping the Alliance was far from altruistic: he only wanted their aid to stabilize Maar Sul and thus help his Order grow in power.
  • Papa Wolf: He is extremely protective of his family members and friends. Try hurting them and you'll experience a world of pain.
  • Pet the Dog: He really cares for all his family members, wishing for nothing more than to see them live a happy life. He encourages them when necessary and even when he doesn't receive any thanks or hugs, he keeps doing it anyway because family is that important to him.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Belial is quite verbose, and many jokes are derived from his heavy use of fancy words.
  • Sibling Team: With Antigonus before Antigonus was sealed into another plane of existence.
  • So Proud of You: Belial tells this to his bodyguard Khalid when Khalid finally reveals himself as an exiled noble from Vanna in front of the Maar Sulais court and promises to do his best to aid Khalid. He also explains that from that moment on Khalid can forge his own path independently. However, at that point Khalid doesn't yet know that Belial is his father.

Desdemona de Ardyn

"I shall be your queen who will turn this land prosperous and strong once more."

A polite and cunning sorceress who is often at the centre of whatever political machination is going on. She usually stands back and let others do the work for her but there are times when she can get serious... and when she does so, be very, very afraid. She murdered her uncle Belial and plotted to make King Marcus marry her in order to take over the kingdom, but the invasion of the undead derailed her plans.

Associated tropes:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She acts as the stereotypic kind noblewoman but in truth she's a backstabbing, manipulative bitch who wants to stay in power by any means necessary. Ax is the only one so far who seems to have figured out that there's more to her than meets the eye... even if that observation is derived from jealousy which Ax feels when Marcus seems infatuated with Desdemona.
  • Black Magic: She's a skilled black mage.
  • Brother-Sister Incest: She has an affair with her brother Mordecai, which results in her getting pregnant.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Pretty much so. The only people she really cares for are her father Antigonus and brother Mordecai.
  • Evil Plan: What she intends to do is to seduce Marcus, give birth to a baby (which she will claim is his whether it really is or not), get married to Marcus or at least legitimize her son as his heir, and then dispose of Marcus quietly and install herself on the throne as the caretaker of Marcus's heir, which effectively puts her in charge of the entire kingdom of Remon.
  • Hero-Killer: She betrayed and killed Belial in Maar Sul City.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Indeed she is.
  • Manipulative Bastard: She is Antigonus's daughter, after all...
  • The Mole: Although she pretends to work for the Order, she's in fact in league with the Totenkopfs.
  • The Vamp: Very much so.

Mordecai de Ardyn

"You're just yet another obstacle in my path, another ant that needs to be crushed."

A quiet, determined knight who has to wear an enchanted armor in order to keep the Blood Fever in check. He ends up being kidnapped by the Totenkopfs, but it later turns out it was just a ruse because he went with them willingly to perfect the Blood Fever in order to make it affect all races. He cares for his half-sister Desdemona deeply.

Associated tropes:

  • Brother-Sister Incest: He has an affair with his sister Desdemona who gets pregnant as a result.
  • Cool Helmet: He wears one.
  • Disability Superpower: He is the Progenitor, the mortal container of the Blood Fever. This state allows him to have a passive anti-magic field which is perfect for sneaking up on powerful mages without them realizing it until it's too late.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's a half-elf.
  • The Mole: He is in fact in league with the Totenkopfs, and his kidnapping was staged in order to fool the heroes and to let him operate more freely.
  • Monster Progenitor: One of two, actually, him being the male variant. He carries the gestated form of Blood Fever within him, and thanks to him the Fever began spreading uncotrollably. The heroes haven't yet realized this.
  • The Stoic: He talks very little. When he talks, you'd better listen to what he has to say.
  • Tin Tyrant: He is forced to wear an enchanted armor to stay alive because he's been infected with the Blood Fever.

Koschei Dravaris

The wily second-in-command of the Order of the Black Rose. He is a conniving noble with a dark past and even darker plans. Despite his ambition and powers he hasn't become a known threat, merely preferring to influence things from the shadows while keeping up a good public image.

Associated tropes:

Maar Sul Loyalists

Briss Phoenixheart

An opportunistic mystic knight who ends up joining the Maar Sulais fellowship and escorts them to the Silverbranch Tree. During his travels he catches the attention of the Totenkopfs and finds out about the threat that Glaurung poses. After the battle of Vanna he frees Sultana Adela from prison and escorts her to the Coalition base in hopes of gaining their trust and figuring out Glaurung's plans.

Associated tropes:

  • Cool Sword: Shadame.
  • Dead Older Brother: His brother Sajon was murdered by Totenkopfs.
  • Fake Defector: He pretends to join the Coalition in order to get closer to the Coalition's top brass. However, after he met with Tiyana, it's become unclear if he's really considering to leave the Alliance and join the Coalition for real.
  • Magic Knight: He's quite good at using both spells and the sword.

Despard Silverbranch

"I will find out who I am, my Lord King, I promise you. And I hope for your sake that we are not enemies."

Also known as Steve the Nameless. An enigmatic knight who suffers from amnesia and is in search of his identity. He becomes a friendly rival with the Scundian king Khasra, and their antics escalates into a prank war. He later finds out that he's in fact Despard Silverbranch, a famous warrior from the past whose spirit ended up in a host body.

Associated tropes:

  • Body Snatcher: He was a spirit in the land of the dead and was moved by a dying soldier's loyalty to a fallen king. He wished to prevent the soldier from dying but ended up in the soldier's body. This event gave him amnesia and also caused some unforseen consequences which gave the forces of Darkness a gateway to the mortal realm.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He is very good with words and is constantly having verbal duels with Khasra.
  • Identity Amnesia: He has this and calls himself Steve until he regains his memories and true identity at the Silverbranch Tree.
  • Quest for Identity: This is his main motivation as Steve; he feels he must've been someone important but can't remember anything else. It all changes once the truth is revealed to him at the Silverbranch Tree...
  • With Friends Like These...: Khasra and the Maar Sulais armsmaster Steve really don't get along and pull brutal pranks on one another which culminates in Khasra getting syphilis from Steve's wife (which turns out to have been Steve's master plan all along). Once it's revealed that Steve is in fact the reborn Despard Silverbranch, the two men set aside their differences although they still occasionally joke on the other's expense.

Elena Jeremy

King Gerard's girlfriend and his would-be-queen. A shy girl from a noble family, she has shown herself to be a good and kind leader who wishes for nothing more than to restore peace to Maar Sul.

Associated tropes:

  • Girl Next Door: Is this to King Gerard.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's quite lenient, but the Maar Sulais nobles often have to remind her that she needs to be strict lest people start thinking that she's weak and unfit to rule. The poor girl just can't catch a break but she does try her best.

Gerard Aurelac de Maar Sul

"Tomorrow, the Proninists will reach the city. Tomorrow, they will seek to destroy a nation older than time. Tomorrow, they will seek to put to death the last remnants of a free and independent Scundia, who have been our peaceful neighbors for so long. And tomorrow... THEY SHALL FAIL!"

The young and wise king of Maar Sul who can shapeshift into a wolf at will. He successfully defended Maar Sul City from the Proninist invasion but was later kidnapped by the Grey Cult. He eventually managed to break free and is currently on his way home.

Associated tropes:

Leon Alcibiates

"Hear me, spirit of Hiroshi Hayabusa! I will keep my word to you! I have found a cause! I vow, with you as my eternal witness, that I shall put a stop to the strife in the nation of Manster! Whatever the cost to myself, I shall make an end of Yurius! This I swear!"

A bisexual bard who has a rather tangled past. Born as a half-god bastard and shunned by both of his parents, he sets out to travel around the world to find a cause to fight for. He eventually learns to harness his divine powers and grows rather competent but at the cost of having prophecies of nasty things which he can't prevent no matter what he does. He is slain by the warlock Arawn Losstarot but is later resurrected--this time as a full human--to act as a messenger of Order. He becomes a mentor of the kings Marcus Sarillius and Gerard Aurelac and is one of the founders of the new Grand Alliance.

Associated tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: His dad Bors beat him up when he found out Leon was bi and emotionally tortured him for years until he finally disowned him. His mother Artemicia is even worse: when Leon prayed for her help, she poisoned him for bothering her.
  • Back from the Dead: He is ressurected a thousand years after he was slain because he is the only one who can find the wielder of the Silver Branch.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Becomes this to Marcus and Gerard although his ways of guiding them are rather subtle and not at all violent even when the two men make mistakes.
  • Bi the Way: This leads to heartbreaking decision when Leon has to choose between Miyuki and Ryoji.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Leon does this to his mentor Taliesin when he finds out that Taliesin has been manipulating him. The same approach backfires spectacularly when he confronts his divine mother Artemicia.
  • The Chick: Leon's role in adventuring parties.
  • Cincinnatus: Leon abdicates the throne of Maar Sul as soon as Gerard is ready to take the throne. He's happy to get rid of such a huge burden and pass it over as he prefers the life of a bard.
  • Divine Parentage: Leon is the bastard son of the goddess Artemicia.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Leon has rather feminine looks and is sometimes mistaken for a woman.
  • Heroic Bastard: Duh.
  • Rage Against the Mentor: He does this to Taliesin when he finds out that Taliesin has been using him.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Leon is older than he looks thanks to his time as an Andain and his resurrection which took place hundreds of years later.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Leon's actions to prevent his vision of the evil mage Arawn disrupting the peace negotiations end up causing Arawn to show up in the negotiations in the first place.
  • Squishy Wizard: Becomes this for a while when he finally learns to use all of his divine magic. Although it's effective against lesser foes, in the end it's still no match against Arawn.
  • Wandering Minstrel: Leon's primary occupation until he becomes a prince of Maar Sul.

Sultanate of Karaganda

Adela al-Jamila bint Meher al-Saif

"Admit it, you've lost!"

The beautiful and ruthless Sultana who murdered her twin sister and banished her nephew Khalid. She does what she thinks is best for the sultanate, strengthening it for the impending demon invasion, but she's more than willing to get rid of anyone who tries to stand in her way. She and Khalid became bitter enemies, and she was eventually deposed in a coup orchestrated by Khalid and the Alliance.

Associated tropes:

  • Driven by Envy: She became envious of Razia when Belial chose Razia over her. This led her to murder Razia and exile Khalid.
  • Evil Aunt: To Khalid.
  • Evil Twin: To her sister Razia.
  • God Save Us From The Sultana: She's the head of the sultante during the Vanna storyline and is not a nice person.
  • High Priest: She is the high cleric of the Clergy of Artemicia.
  • Love Makes You Evil: As mentioned above, her mad love for Belial drove her to desperate actions and began her path to evil. Sadly she and Belial never get to meet after Khalid's exile.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: She kills her twin sister Razia in order to get closer to Belial. When Belial found out about his lover's death, he was not amused.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She's a sultana and can kick your ass anytime. There's a reason why the Sarquil males let women rule over them, after all...
  • The Usurper: She killed her twin sister and took over the throne of Vanna while also forcing her nephew to go into exile.
  • Waif Fu: She looks fragile but is very powerful thanks to her sorcery and mastery of the scimitars.
  • Woman Scorned: Belial really shouldn't have dissed her in favour of her twin sister. Hell hath no fury...

Azriel al-Zarar

"We've turned from our ancestors, we've turned from our most ancient traditions, and for what? To allow a foreign clergy conquer our lands? To service the hedonism and ambition of a woman who not only murdered one beloved Sultana of Vanna, but may well be murdering her son as we speak? I will not allow the blight of Adela's reign plague our proud people any more!"

A frail cleric who is disgusted with his people not following the old ways anymore. He gets his chance for revenge when he's contacted by what appears to be the spirit of the ancient warrior Tronin who grants him incredible powers. He joins the Alliance and openly opposes Adela in the subsequent battle. He doesn't like Khalid that much either, though, because he sees him unworthy to sit on the throne of Vanna.

Associated tropes:

  • Deal with the Devil: An interesting example. Azriel is powered up by what he thinks is the famous Sarquil hero Tronin's spirit, but in fact the spirit is the demonic Yurius in disguise who is only using Azriel for his own ends.
  • Drop the Hammer: He uses a war hammer as his main weapon.
  • Glass Cannon: He can cause a lot of damage but is very frail.
  • Good Old Ways: The reason he sides with the heroes to depose Adela is because Adela introduced a new religion which oppressed the old tradition. He wants the good times back.

Awar

"This is nothing personal. It is just business."

Khalid's mentor and hunchback servant, he often provides the heroes of the Alliance with crucial information about Sarquil culture. However, he turns out to be a mole who had been sent with Khalid in order to gain his trust and use him for his masters' nefarious ends. At first it seems like his superior is Adela but in the end it's revealed that he has doublecrossed Adela as well and is in fact working for Grand Vizier Iblis and the demonic Southern Horde.

Associated tropes:

  • Battle Butler: He is this to Khalid, mentoring him on the dangers of magic and the usefulness of politics. He can kick ass too; many have underestimated his magic.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: He manages to capture the god Shakkan into a shard of Krystallopyr, a feat which few mortals have matched.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: He's pretending to work for the Alliance although he's in league with the Totenkopfs. Then it turns out he's actually a mole working for Adela and the Clergy of Artemicia. And then it turns out that his real master is in fact Iblis--in other words, his ultimate loyalty is to the demons of the Southern Horde.
  • Kick the Dog: During the battle of Vanna he murders the innocent girl Nalaen once he has no more use for her... just to piss off the heroes.
  • Old Retainer: He works closely with Khalid although it's just an act to keep up appearances because his true loyalty lies with Iblis.
  • Smug Snake: Turns into this after he reveals himself as a triple agent.

Khalid al-Rashid bin Razia al-Saif

"You're a Libaterran and yet you refuse the call of your homeland when she needs you the most? I thought you were a brave warrior, Axikasha Keiran, and I hoped that your example might inspire my people to fight for their country. Perhaps I was wrong. Perhaps you're nothing more than a pathetic coward who just wants to run away!"

The exiled Sarquil prince who reclaimed his throne from his aunt Adela who had once usurped his mother's throne. Easy to anger, he's more than willing to settle disputes with brawn but he's also skilled in using carefully selected words to make people do what he wants. His ruthless quest for the throne of Vanna and the title of Sultan have made some of his allies in the Grand Alliance see him in a new light.

Associated tropes:

  • Dual-Wielding: He was taught to use dual scimitars by Ismail.
  • The Exile: He was exiled from his homeland after the death of his mother. However, he returned years later to reclaim his lost throne from the usurper.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is very easy to anger.
  • Love Triangle: He's involved in a complex one which deals with Ax, Marcus and Refan.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: It turns out that Khalid is in fact the son of Belial.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Khalid lives for battle like every other Sarquil.
  • Rightful Sultan Returns: His return and rise to power in Vanna serves as a major plot.
  • Take Up My Sword: Khalid continues his father's quest after the latter's demise.

Ismail

"The shortest path to power may not always be the safest one."

The captain of the Black Guard of Vanna, he's very protective of Khalid. However, he paid so much attention to the young prince that he neglected his son Razoul who grew bitter, and the relationship between father and son took a long time (and one big battle) to heal. He's a calm and intelligent warrior who never rushes into battle without thinking things through. He prefers to stay in the shadows and observe things from there, a tactic which has turned out to be quite useful many times during the heroes' adventures.

Associated tropes:

  • Bald Black Leader Guy: He definitely counts.
  • Duel to the Death: Ismail vs. Leraje. Despite a valiant struggle which he almost wins against the greater demon, Ismail eventually fails to fully defeat and pays the ultimate price to give the heroes time to save the Sarquil prisoners from the Northern Horde's camp.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's tough and smart. There's a reason why he stayed as a captain of the guard for so long without being replaced.
  • Gentle Giant: Haunted by his past actions as the captain of the guard, Ismail became a lot more contemplative and nicer in his exile, not even resorting to violence except when ordered or when it became absolutely necessary to protect Belial and Khalid.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Ismail isn't afraid of doing this to prisoners especially if his group is in a hurry.
  • Scary Black Man: He can be quite scary when he wants to but in the end he's actually a pretty nice person who resorts to violence only when absolutely necessary. However, if anyone dares to harm or insult Belial or Khalid...
  • So Proud of You: Ends up confronting his son and explains that he has always held him in high esteem but was more concerned with raising Khalid who was meant to take the throne of Vanna. Ismail admits the mistake he made for not showing enough love to his son and apologizes while also complementing how strong and determined his son has become.

Razoul

"I am what I am. Someone has to be."

The seemingly cold, calculating officer of the Black Guard and Ismail's son. Although he first appears as an antagonist who sides with Adela and Iblis against the Alliance, he later reevaluates his position and ends up working for Khalid as a bodyguard and advisor while still acting as a leader of Vanna's military forces. His experience with fighting against demons and mages has come in handy many times, and he has gradually shown a more complex, vulnerable side during his interactions with Rain, a girl who ended up in his life by accident but permanently changed the way he saw the world around him.

Associated tropes:

  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: It turns out that despite his cold demeanour Razoul has a sensitive side. This is shown during his interactions with his love interest Rain.
  • The Captain: He is this prior to the heroes' invasion and becomes it again after Ismail has been slain during the Battle of Vanna.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: He becomes a lot less harsh after he and Rain fall in love. She succeeds in thawing his cold heart and turning him into a better person over time.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He became envious of Khalid, which made him join Adela. This improves after some father-and-son talk with Ismail.
  • Heel Face Turn: Does this after realizing that Iblis has been using all of them.
  • Morality Pet: Rain acts as this to him.
  • Scary Black Man: Very much so. He often refers to himself as a monster because he's willing to do what others don't.
  • Sour Supporter: Although he becomes the heroes' supporter and Khalid's guardian and advisor, he still sees Khalid in a negative light because of Khalid's brash attitude. He's also suspicious of the Alliance even though he can't see any better alternative than working with them for the time being.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He wants the approval of his father and feels his father liked Khalid more than him.

Qadohi

The spiritual leader of the lizard folk, Qadohi of the Tongue is a stern but reasonable cleric who is devoted to serving the god Shakkan. Although appearing as an antagonist at first, she quickly warmed up to the heroes of the Grand Alliance when she saw their bravery and determination first hand. She eventually joined the Alliance with her people, helping the Alliance save Vanna from nefarious plotters. After the siege of Vanna, she remained in the desert with her people to do what she can to halt the demons' activities in the region.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Hero: She works for the Alliance and has fought against dark forces, but her people are more than happy to devour captives and are prepared to fight against the Alliance too if the heroes ever try to take back their word to let them spread over the Tronin Desert.
  • Lizard Folk
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's the high cleric of her people and is willing to listen to people.
  • Sssssnaketalk: She talks like this when she's excited.

White Ravens

Dylas Rin Theron

"I will not let anyone stop me from helping the citizens of Remon realize their dream of a reunified nation."

An ambitious politician with plans of a strong Remon, he initially seems to help the Alliance albeit his own way but later reveals a much more sinister, arrogant side. He eventually raises an army and begins a civil war in Remon with hopes of dethroning King Marcus as the leader of Remon. His plans fail when the undead invade, however, and he is forced to seek refuge among the elves, after which he tries to continue his political campaign again but with different means than before.

Associated tropes:

  • The Atoner: After the plague of undeath spreads over Remon and puts the civil war which he began to a quick end, Dylas reappears in Folsworth Woods as an amnesiac refugee named Prescott A. Banks. Once he remembers his past identity, he convinces the elves that he wants to atone for his past misdeeds by helping those in need. Whether this is genuine remorse or yet another sinister ploy remains to be seen.
  • Dead Little Brother: Dylas loses his half-brother Amon and uses his death as a means to provoke people to rid Ravensworth of thieves who had kidnapped him. What people don't know, however, is that Dylas himself orchestrated Amon's kidnapping with help from a few thugs and poisoned him in order to frame said thugs and place the blame of killing Amon on the thieves in Ravensworth. This helped him get rid of dangerous elements in the city, secure the citizens' support, unify and strengthen his growing army with new volunteers as well as see that his half-brother passed over into a "better world" where nothing can harm him anymore.
  • The Chessmaster: Dylas hatches elaborate plans to use his opponents for his own ends. He does it while pretending to be said people's loyal ally.
  • Turncoat: He eventually gathers up an army in secret and unleashes a civil war in hopes of taking over Remon while Marcus is abroad fighting the Coalition.

Eric Stevenson

"I'm in charge of the Watch now, and what I say goes!"

The stern and elf-hating captain of the Ravensworth Watch, he is determined and skilled but quite easy to manipulate. Both the Totenkopfs and Dylas have used him for their own ends, and he doesn't hide the fact that he is only interested in the safety of his citizens and keeping Ravensworth under his iron grip. He sees Dylas as a worthy substitute to Marcus.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Hero: Very much so. He won't hesitate to kill people to ensure Ravensworth's safety.
  • The Captain: He becomes this after he assumes the previous captain Adram has been killed in action. He does everything in his power to live up to the example Adram has shown him.
  • The Dragon: He is essentially this to Dylas who manipulates him to his liking.
  • Fantastic Racism: He despises elves, seeing them as tree-hugging faggots who threaten mankind's survival in Remon.

Associated tropes:

  • Black Magic: He's skilled in black magic.
  • Find the Cure: Waldheim seeks to find a cure to the Blood Fever, a fatal disease which affects elves. This leads him to join forces with Rhylian who is on the same quest.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He can be quite grumpy at times.
  • Headbutting Heroes: He doesn't really get along with Antigonus and Belial and has verbal spats with them. It has to do with what happened to them when they were younger.
  • Vampiric Draining: He has the power to drain lifeforce from his enemies. This skill has been put to use a few times.
  • The Von Trope Family: Dieter von Waldheim which means in his case from/of the Forest Home. It is quite fitting, considering that he hails from a city near a great forest and is a known friend of elves (even having an elven wife), thus indicating that he sees the elven woods as his other home. The von also signifies his status as a baron, thus being above the common Remon citizen.

Fel Ridoon

"I suspect this group, including the suspects, to be nothing but dead ends."

A dwarven detective sent to spy on people who are suspected to be behind the death of Belial de Ardyn. However, after thorough investigations he comes to the conclusions that the suspects were nothing but dead ends, and he returns to Remon where he ends up fighting the invading undead.

After escorting the boy to Glaurung, he ends up entangled in a demonic plot which doesn't end well for him.

He had a rather intense, prank-centered rivalry with armsmaster Despard but since then the two have become close friends. He's also supposedly destined to play a part in a divine plan centered around the dark god Mardük and has unwillingly become a chaos knight.

Associated tropes:

  • Badass Beard: There's a reason people often describe Khasra as 'leonine'.
  • Badass Normal: He fought against the shade of a powerful knight in a celestial realm and defeated him, restored hope to the Wailing City of Chaos, stripped demons of their regenerative powers and helped the Akai Tora to take over the strategic location of Vulpengaard Keep from the demon hordes.
  • Cool Sword: Khasra has Morninglight, a sword which the dark god Mardük himself had once used.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He does it with style and often.
  • Papa Wolf: Khasra is extremely protective of his daughter Maple.

Once it's revealed that Steve is in fact the reborn Despard Silverbranch, the two men set aside their differences although they still occasionally joke on the other's expense.

Marcus Sarillius

"I finally know who I am! I'm a paladin from Graves Hall. I'm a cleric of Hephaestus. I'm the Chosen One of Cardia. I'm the hero of the Grand Alliance. I'm the Wielder of Dusk. I'm the King of Remon. But above any of those I'm Marcus Sarillius, and I will not let any of my friends die!"

A righteous paladin who became the king of Remon. He is also the leader of the Grand Alliance and the chosen wielder of the magic blade Dusk. Although he means well, his idealism and naive outlook on life often lead him into trouble from which his friends have to save him.

Associated tropes:

  • Amplifier Artifact: Marcus's sword Dusk is very effective against the minions of Mardük, the God of Chaos.
  • Cool Sword: Dusk, again.
  • Honor Before Reason: Marcus's thought process in a nutshell.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Marcus is a shining example of this until he is forced to act as various villains' pawn.
  • Mind Rape: This is how Shyralis keeps Marcus in line and uses him as her pawn during the Godslayer arc while ostensibly serving as Marcus's advisor. Marcus later manages to free himself from Shyralis's power and intends to set things right but time will tell how the confrontation between him and Shyralis will play out.
  • The Paladin: Very much so. He can be quite clueless to things at times. And he's still a virgin.

  • Royal Blood: The spirits of the dead reveal that Marcus is the long-lost descendant of the late king Agarwaen.
  • Secret Legacy: Marcus is related to the late king Agarwaen by blood which gives him the divine right to become the King of Remon.

Nesa Mikoto

A half-elf paladin who has sworn to help people in need. Quite naïve when he joins the Alliance, he eventually grows up a bit more cynical but is still as determined as ever to do what he feels is right. After having an affair with a goddess, he devotes himself to saving their daughter from anyone who might try to use her for their own gain.

Associated tropes:

  • Dead Little Sister: His adoptive little sister died when animals suffering from rabies attacked her. He has never forgiven himself for not being able to protect her, and her death made him swear to help others in any way he can.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Nesa is very polite, even shy, but he also has fantasies of threesomes and doesn't mind flirting with girls occasionally.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Nesa's relationship with Ronove during their adventures together.
  • Double Standard Rape (Divine on Mortal): He gets raped by the goddess Hivena who poses as Rhylian. It was all her plan to give birth to a half-god. Nesa is understandably not amused when he finds out he's been tricked.
  • The Paladin: A shining example of this although he's not so pure anymore... in a sexual sense thanks to Rhylian... and Hivena.
  • Papa Wolf: He becomes fiercely protective of his daughter Nyanna after he has rescued her.

Nymgrock Sigiln

A cunning wizard who is initially only interested in seeing a united Remon as well as gathering as much information about the Blood Fever as possible. After spending some time with Razoul, they grow quite close and become lovers, both helping the other see the world in a new light.

  • Action Girl: Despite her kindness, she is also a surprisingly skilled and cunning warrior. She uses her weak-looking body to her advantage because many people often underestimate her prowess in combat.
  • Love Interest: To Razoul.
  • Morality Pet: Rain acts like this to Razoul. She has made him see many things in a new light and humanizes him by letting him expose his vulnerabilities.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has fair skin, black hair, and is beautiful.

Raul Emmenson

A snarky thief who belongs to an influential thieves' guild known as the Union Workers. His mad ex-wife is trying to murder him every once in a while.

  • The Atoner: Raul used to be much more liberal with his knives, willing to kill or manipulate anybody until he had to kill his wife and couldn't do it. Since then, he's tried to do good things more often, and used more finesse.
  • The Chessmaster: Raul used to do this quite frequently, and he will probably start using it again now that he's mixed up with the Alliance.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Raul pretty much keeps going at it every chance he gets.
  • Impossible Thief: He can sometimes fall into what seems like this, and he's not even the best in his generation.
  • The Lost Lenore: His wife is some version of this, having previously been a very good person, and their relationship was improving from a very rocky patch when she got addicted by a Magnificent Bastard for a mind-altering drug.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: He acts in quite a cold, ruthless manner once he reveals himself as being not that oafish as his initial appearance made it seem. However, travelling with his new Alliance companions makes him grow fonder of them even though he occasionally tries to deny the fact that he is befriending them over time.

Razravkar Dominus

An elven necromancer who is taking odd jobs for money while pursuing knowledge of the forbidden arts. He won't hesitate getting his hands dirty if there's a need, but he generally tries to do the good thing when an opportunity presents itself.

  • The Lost Lenore: He gradually reveals that his wife's death in the past is what drove him to the dark path.

Shyralis

A half-elven mage with a shady past and mysterious plans. She's sly, ambitious and intelligent, and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. • Pet the Dog: Despite her cruelty Shyralis has occasionally shown kindness to a select few people, most notably her friend/love interest Izael (whom she has saved a few times) and her grandmother Helane.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Although many heroes are aware of her shady past and questionable actions, they tolerate her because Marcus trusts her. Her dark actions often make the others question whether it's safe to be around her, but she has enough authority so they don't meddle in her affairs (except for Ax who simply can't keep her mouth shut in Shyralis's presence while questioning her every decision).

Skye d'Zarnagon

A cheerful yet determined warrior and wife of Refan. Despite losing her village and most of her friends when she joined the Alliance, she has refused to give in to despair. She loves her husband and son dearly and wants nothing more than to live happily with them although she is still willing to fight for what is good in the world. • Fallen Hero: The war years really took their toll on him, and he was easy prey for the Totenkopfs who convinced him to join them.
  • The Mole: Cain ostensibly works for the Alliance but is in fact spying on them for the Totenkopfs.
  • Name of Cain: Abel adopts the name Cain after he turns to the dark side. It is also a pun because he used the name Abel while helping the heroes but adopted the name Cain (Dark Abel) when he joined the villains.

Drishnek

"The only true power is that of Death itself. Don't you see? It is inevitable."

A cunning lich sorcerer who has a tangled past with Leon and Jemuel. He acted as Jemuel's advisor until Jemuel betrayed the Underworld's cause, after which he rejoined the Totenkopfs and is now plotting to plunge the world into darkness.

Associated tropes:

  • Back from the Dead: Happens to him twice. First, after being killed by Daven in Ofuchi's tower, and later after being killed by Khasra III in Alent.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: He rejoins the Totenkopfs after his second death in Alent, and both he and the Master, whom he had taught before he originally left for Alent, hold as much power in the Totenkopf cult.
  • Body Surf: Drishnek's method is to move his spirit from one body to another. When he leaves for another body, the old host body dies.
  • The Chessmaster: Drishnek is very good at planning things and prefers to stay in the shadows especially after his second defeat. However, he is willing to get his bony fingers dirty if it is absolutely necessary.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Very much so.
  • Glowing Eyelights of Undeath: Quite creepy ones, too.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was the one who guided Dante to resurrect Jemuel, and he later acted as Jemuel's closest advisor with a plan to turn Jemuel into the commander of the Underworld.
  • Our Liches Are Different
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Drishnek's plan is foiled by Richelieu and the purple paladins and Jemuel refuses to work for him any longer, he loses his mind completely and goes after the one person he hates the most and who is his most vulnerable enemy, Leon Alcibiates, only to end up killed by Leon's group. He regains his sanity after his resurrection, though.
  • Squishy Wizard: He's quite fragile but extremely powerful. Only holy magic can hurt him.
  • Soul Jar: He holds his essence in a phylactery. As long as the phylactery exists, he can never truly be banished forever.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Drishnek turned out to be this after Jemuel realized he had been used. Although he genuinely wanted Jemuel oto become the commander of the undead horde, he didn't hesitate to attack Jemuel when he realized he could no longer control him.
  • Wild Card: Although he acted as Death's herald for a long time, his status of undeath was revoked after one failure too many. After this he no longer answers to Death who betrayed him and instead starts his own agenda which is separate from Death's.

Thrax

"No, it's the other way around. The real question is: what do you want?"

A mysterious elven cultist with a cunning tongue, he knows the art of deception well. Although nominally a Totenkopf, his ambition grew enough for him to begin scheming against his masters and actually join Antigonus de Ardyn in a bid for power. However, his loyalty to Antigonus is shady at best, and he seems to have his own agenda, using everyone for his own gain.

Associated tropes:

  • Dragon with an Agenda: To Antigonus out of all people. Although nominally still a Totenkopf, Thrax is also playing a game with Antigonus, hoping to use both factions to his advantage.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He uses reverse questions to find a person's weak spot, after which he uses that spot to manipulate the person. His tongue might be his greatest weapon.
  • Our Elves Are Better

Zenobia

"Finally I can unleash my next ode to chaos! Once I'm done, the Ravensworth incident will look like a mere prelude compared to this cacophonic masterpiece!"

A cunning but somewhat mad sorceress, she is obsessed with composing music and causing as much chaos as possible. She has remained a surprisingly loyal follower of the Totenkopf cult and has caused the Grand Alliance grief on several occasions.

Associated tropes:

  • Abusive Sibling: Dorecia to Zenobia, and she went all the way to corrupt her younger sister.
  • Dark Action Girl: Very much so.
  • Mad Artist: She wishes to unleash odes to chaos and is willing to cause all sorts of mayhem in order to "compose" perfect music. She's musical but also nuts.
  • Psycho for Hire: She doesn't care what she has to do as long as long as she gets to cause pain. The Totenkopfs were simply a means for her to express herself fully.

Vulfsatz

Donovan

A strong member of the Vulfsatz who has been physically training Hannibal Losstarot. He is level-headed and prefers to think before attacking an enemy. When he talks, he always has something important to say.

Associated tropes:

  • Combat Pragmatist: He is not afraid of fighting dirty if the situation calls for it, and this is what he keeps teaching Hannibal because in his view there is no room for chivalry on the battlefield.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He is a very good boxer.
  • Mighty Glacier: He's a tough guy.
  • Tranquil Fury: He attacks his opponents with deadly precision, rarely showing his emotions in combat.

Gwydion

A cunning member of the Vulfsatz, he murders a member of the Alliance and takes his place in order to find out what the Alliance is planning. He has almost been exposed a few times but he has always managed to weave a believable tale to keep others' suspicion off. However, his time in the Alliance is slowly affecting him and he starts to see that not everyone in the Alliance is as awful as he has assumed.

Associated tropes:

  • Black Magic: He's a very skilled black mage.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: He kills the Maar Sulais operative Koskenkorva and takes his place in the Maar Sulais group in order to spy on the heroes and hamper their schemes. He's beginning to show some Becoming the Mask tendencies, though.
  • The Mole: He's posing as a Maar Sulais operative but his true allegiance lies with the Coalition.
  • Smug Snake: Very much so.

Orestes

"We Vulfsatz are the best of the best. Where we strike, none live to tell the tale."

Leader of the Vulfsatz, an elite and loyal group of warriors and mages working directly under the Losstarots. He is determined to get the job done but he sometimes lets his emotions cloud his judgement, making some jobs more personal to him than they should be. He's mentored Hannibal and has grown close to him, becoming a foster father figure to the young warlord.

Associated tropes:

  • Bodyguard Crush: Orestes has feelings for Glaurung but his sense of duty prevents him from letting her know anything about it.
  • Co-Dragons: One of the three dragons who serve Glaurung. His role is the captain of the warlady's guard as well as her top assassin.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: He likes to do this when things don't go his way, e.g. when he lost a duel to Despard.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He has seen the cruel side of the world, most notably when he lost his son, but he is nevertheless willing to fight for a better tomorrow and raise his master Hannibal to become a just and powerful leader of the Coalition.
  • Parental Substitute: Orestes is this to Hannibal.

Rhys Elendil

A contemplative healer and bard, he is the least violent member of the Vulfsatz. He often ponders the fate of his people, questioning whether the conflict will ever end, but he nevertheless follows his superior's orders without question.

Associated tropes:

Demon Hordes and Allies

Clergy of Mardük

Distreyd Thanadar XIII

"Mardük is often maligned as the God of Chaos, but when it comes down to it, Chaos stands for freedom of choice. In an ordered society, nothing is left to chance, and all choices are pre-made. Cardia would take everybody's choices away, and he sends his evil reavers to oppress anybody who wishes to retain their freedom. The Chosen Ones exist to protect the people from Cardia's evil minions, and I'm one of those Chosen Ones."

The current high cleric of Mardük and the brother of Tarna, he serves as one of the Northern Horde's commanders. He is manipulative, intelligent and snarky and feels he is fighting for the right cause to preserve Mardük's memory via serving the demons.

Associated tropes:

  • Black Magic: He is a skilled user of the dark arts.
  • Brother-Sister Team: With Tarna.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He does this often to both enemies and friends. He has a warped sense of humour.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Distreyd's sister Tarna calls him Troy or Three occasionally. He often corrects her, telling her that he doesn't want to hear the name again because it doesn't sound respectful enough and that he has severed ties to his past where his name signified his position as only the third eldest child of the previous Distreyd.
  • High Priest: He is the current high cleric of the Clergy of Mardük.
  • King Bob the Nth: Distreyd Thanadar XIII isn't a king but a high cleric. The number behind his name indicates that he is the thirteenth high cleric of Mardük to bear the name (which also acts as a title) Distreyd Thanadar (and in direct succession to boot!).
  • Meaningful Name: Troy, Distreyd's name among his adoptive family before he assumed his current title, is an alternative name for his real name Three which in turn refers to his position as the third eldest child of the previous Distreyd. The naming convention among the Distreyds is that a child is given a numerical title depending on the chronological order of their birth.
  • Meaningful Rename: He adopts the name and title Distreyd Thanadar after his father kicks the bucket. This signifies his devotion to the god Mardük and makes the point that he is the direct descendant of the previous Distreyd.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: The Thanadar surname is not related to the demonic Thanadar clan by blood; instead the name was chosen for the line of high clerics of Mardük because in the dark clergy's view the Thanadar demons possess the characteristics which the clergy admires. Distreyd XIII isn't that happy to work with the demons who share his surname, and the Thanadar demons themselves find Distreyd's surname a rather amusing but trivial thing.
  • Overlord, Jr.: He has turned out to be quite similar to his father, the former Big Bad Distreyd XII, except that he isn't quite as cruel.
  • Squishy Wizard: He is a powerful mage but can't take a beating.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He believes he is leading a crusade against the "evil" followers of Cardia and that with demon help he can finally help people realize their true potential and break the shackles of Order.
  • You Are Number Six: His original name is Three, which indicates that he is the third eldest child of the previous Distreyd Thanadar. This numerical theme naming is common in the Distreyd family line because it not only dehumanizes the children who are constantly goaded into killing not only each other but also their father so that only the strongest survives to inherit the title of high cleric, but the number also helps them figure out who is the oldest child among them (and who is thus the one who might pose the greatest danger to a would-be future Distreyd).

Tarna

The hyperactive little sister of Distreyd Thanadar XIII. She is kind and helpful and will do anything for her brother, even serve the demons, many of whom she has befriended. She is a skilled rogue and infiltrator and acts as the heart of the Northern Horde.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Villain: Very much so.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She often apologizes when she's forced to attack enemies but she tries to silence them as painlessly as possible.
  • Brother-Sister Team: With Distreyd XIII.
  • Morality Pet: She is one of the few people who can keep Distreyd XIII in line to an extent. It is her love and influence which keep Distreyd from fully jumping off the slippery slope.
  • Perky Female Minion: She is one of the most sympathetic characters in the Northern Horde and the clergy. She is cheerful, kind and helpful... but she still sides with the demons and believes in her brother Distreyd's cause.
  • Token Good Teammate: She is this in the Northern Horde.

Eastern Horde

Jezebeth

A cunning higher demoness who disguised herself as the meek household servant of Thanatos Barca. However, she was actually plotting to unleash demons on Illunii via a magic portal, and ordered her minions Naga and Persephone to help her use the heroes of the Grand Alliance to further her goals. In the end her plan was foiled and she was banished back to the Demon Realm.

Associated tropes:

  • Bi the Way: As a demon she likes both men and women although she prefers women slightly more because she sees them as superior beings to men.
  • The Chessmaster: She was the mastermind who controlled.
  • The Corrupter: She essentially drove Persephone insane and goaded her into killing her mother. She then began a relationship with her, further ensuring that Persephone would be under her power without realizing it.
  • Evil Gloating: One of her biggest flaws ends up being her gloating, which gives the heroes a clue how to thwart her plans.
  • The Mole: She was a mole working in Illunii and using her elven disguise to her advantage.

Naga

A shapeshifting demoness with a cunning tongue and even greater strength. She worked for Jezebeth and put a mental trigger on Deidra Finian so that she would become their pawn when the time was right. She perished when the Barca manor collapsed on her during her fight with the heroes of the Grand Alliance.

Associated tropes:

  • Elite Mook: She was essentially this, being much more resilient and cunning than most of the demon mooks under Jezebeth's control.
  • Scaled Up: When she pursues the heroes, she turns herself into a giant snake. This ultimately proves to be her undoing because she becomes an easier target for the heroes to attack although she injures several of them in the process.
  • Taking You with Me: She tries this as her last resort and makes the manor collapse on her and the heroes when she realizes she's done for. She would've succeeded if the heroes hadn't thought of a grisly way to blast their way through her torso to reach the exit which she was blocking with her scaly body.

Natsumi Amuro

A cheerful young woman who is looking for her missing brother. Despite her youth she is already quite experienced and knows that the world is not a happy place. Her loyalty ultimately lies with Vaetris whom she follows without asking any questions.

Associated tropes:

  • I Will Find You: She is looking for her missing brother whom the demons kidnapped years ago. One possible reason for her siding with the demons is release her brother from captivity in exchange for her services.
  • The Mole: Her loyalty lies with Vaetris, not with Ax.

Persephone Barca

An elven damsel who seemed to be in distress and the daughter of Thanatos Barca, she made the heroes of the Grand Alliance rescue her from the Coalition's clutches. However, it later turned out that she was in fact working with the demons of the Eastern Horde and used the heroes to betray her father and the denizens of Illunii in a spectacular manner. Her plans were foiled in the end, however, and she was put in jail for her crimes.

Associated tropes:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She acts like a damsel in distress, albeit in a sassy way, but in truth does her best to frame Deidra for her crimes. After initial hesitation, the Grand Alliance ends up swallowing her deception hook, line and sinker.
  • Necromancer: She's one of the few remaining necromancers, and quite insane.
  • Psycho Lesbian: After she is corrupted by Jezebeth, she becomes her lover and obedient servant.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: She pulls this off when she's kidnapped by Deidra. However, Persephone only feigned helplessness to make the heroes kill Deidra, which then allowed Persephone to complete the ritual just as she had planned.

Signan Weinstein

A stern comrade and eventual bodyguard of Vaetris who does anything for her. He is bad at flirting although he often tries to show himself as a suave ladies' man.

Associated tropes:

  • Bodyguard Crush: He's fallen madly in love with Vaetris who eagerly exploits his feelings.
  • The Mole: His loyalty lies with Vaetris, not with Ax.

Vaetris L'andariel

"Woman, do you understand who you're dealing with? Vaetris L'andariel, Duchess of the Eastern Horde... soon to be Grand Duchess of the Four Hordes."

Archdemon and duchess of the Eastern Horde. She posed as a human rogue and worked as one of the top officers of Ax's Blades of Vigilance. However, that was all an act as she only waited for the right moment to snatch Ax's magic blade Dawn. She also has plans for Glaurung whom she sees as a means to reach her goal of becoming the Grand Duchess of all demon hordes.

Associated tropes:

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: There's a reason why she hasn't been overthrown yet. She even takes on the nigh-invincible Glaurung one-on-one and wins with almost no effort.
  • Big Bad Friend: To Jono and Ax.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: She ends up utterly curbstomping and kidnapping the Coalition's leader Glaurung who has until then been an unstoppable warrior with magical powers.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: She is one of the four archdemons.
  • Dual-Wielding: Vaetris's preferred way of fighting.
  • Evil All Along: She's introduced as a snarky human rogue but she's in fact one of the four archdemons who's gathering intel on other races and the state of the kingdoms so that her horde can invade them.
  • Evil Redhead: Very much so after The Reveal.
  • Horny Devils: Vaetris isn't ashamed of showing off her naked body when she reveals her true, demonic form. She likes to combine pain and pleasure and gets ecstatic whenever she smells blood.
  • The Magnificent: She is known as the Deceiver. Also doubles as Names to Run Away From Really Fast.
  • The Mole: And how! She works as one of Ax's most trusted allies but is in fact one of the four archdemons in disguise. When she decides to take matters into her own hands, she does it with style and without most of the heroes even realizing what is going on.
  • Villainous Crush: A mild example. She really seems to care for Jono as more than a friend, but when he refuses her offer to become her minion, she discards him with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
  • Visionary Villain: She wishes to unite the bickering hordes into one, united horde and become their ultimate leader as well as take over the world.

Northern Horde

Flavius Severus

The only human general of the Northern Horde, he is also a great engineer and strategist. He cares for nothing else than to serve a powerful force and test his endless supply of deadly war machines on the battlefield. He enjoys the challenge to test his intellect against as intelligent opponents and wants to show that he is superior to everyone.

Associated tropes:

  • The Engineer: He builds siege engines, for crying out loud.
  • The Evil Genius: He's very intelligent. How else could he have designed all his death machines?
  • The Magnificent: He is known as the Besieger because of his record of breaking into every seemingly unconquerable city he has come across.
  • The Strategist: He adapts to new events quickly as shown in the Battle of Vanna when he questioned Leraje's orders and eventually unleashed the Helepolis to test it against Vanna's defenses. All of his plans went quite well, actually, until Azriel showed up with an earth elemental.
  • Turncoat: He's betrayed his allies twice. First he joined the Yamatian army and helped them take over his homeland Aison, and after the Cataclysm he sided with the demons and helped them take over Yamato. He's an opportunist for sure.

Leraje Thanadar

"Tell the Shogun that I, Leraje, Hoch des Rot, am waiting for him and that I'll devour his heart and bring his head to my master. All of you will fall before us like your pitiful homeland did!"

An extremely violent second-in-command of the Northern Horde. He enjoys torturing his victims in various ways and often gives himself a disadvantage in battles just to make fights last longer. He is also ambitious and wishes to see demons take over the whole world. Hates his big brother with passion and sees all non-demons as lesser beings.

Associated tropes:

  • Always Second Best: He's this to his older brother who is more skilled than he is. This eventually leads him to betray his brother.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He is the second-in-command of a bloodthirsty horde so he is naturally the second strongest warrior among them, surpassed in strength only by his master Malphas.
  • Ax Crazy: A gritty example of this.
  • Cain and Abel: Leraje is extremely jealous of his big brother Ronove's powers and fame, and this eventually leads him to betray him, which leads to Ronove's amnesia and Leraje taking many of Ronove's old followers into the ranks of the Northern Horde.
  • Coitus Uninterruptus: Leraje doesn't stop having sex with a female slave even when his lieutenant Nobuo arrives to deliver a report. He has casual conversation with Nobuo while keeping up the act, and he even devours the slave in front of Nobuo at the end of the briefing, going so far as to offer Nobuo a taste of her flesh. Nobuo keeps his cool, albeit barely.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Says this to Ronove who tries to reason with him and sympathize with his backstory while they're having a duel.
  • The Dragon: To Malphas. When the duke himself was elsewhere, it was Leraje who commanded the army of the Northern Horde during the Battle of Vanna.
  • Driven by Envy: Leraje became jealous of his brother Ronove being better than him at everything, and this envy festered long enough for Leraje to end up betraying him.
  • Last Second Chance: Despite everything Leraje's done to him, Ronove still is willing to forgive him if he surrenders. However, Leraje is far too stubborn and prideful by that point and sees the genuine offer as yet another way of mocking him.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: During the Battle of Vanna he tells Ronove that they are brothers and that he has been responsible for Ronove's amnesia.
  • Psycho for Hire: The reason he enjoys battles so much is the chance to kill powerful enemies and consume their life energy which makes him grow stronger. He has invented various creative ways to inflict as much pain to his enemy as possible and often likes to toy wish his opponents to give them a ray of hope before utterly skewering them.
  • We Have Reserves: He gleefully sends his minions to a certain death just to get results faster even though a bit more planning would've been more beneficial to him in the long run. He does possess a strategic intellect but he doesn't care about mooks that much and sees them as disposable pawns because he can always breed and/or enslave more.

Malphas d'Xuvadon

"Once Libaterra is mine, the Grand Duchess will have no other choice than to marry me and make me the Grand Duke of Yamato. Then I can dispose of the other archdemons and finally reign supreme over Yamato and the entire world!"

Archdemon and duke of the Northern Horde. An ambitious warlord who has his eyes set on conquering Libaterra so that he can gain a fertile land and show the demonic Grand Duchess of Yamato that he is a worthy mate. He, like his horde, enjoys the thrill of battle. Despite his bloodthirsty nature and condescending attitude, he is one of the few demons to actually employ other races in his forces and has even promoted one human into a general. He has recently fallen under a geas which had been set up by Nina Heeate.

Associated tropes:

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Malphas holds the highest rank in the Northern Horde and is also its most powerful warrior.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: He is one of the four archdemons.
  • Geas: Ends up being put under a geas due to the treachery of a fellow archdemon.
  • Four-Star Badass: He is a general of a bloodthirsty army and he kicks most people's asses without any effort.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: He despises women of all races and sees them as inferior to men in every way. Ironically he ends up deceived by a demoness out of all people.
  • The Magnificent: He is known as the Devourer. Also doubles as Names to Run Away From Really Fast.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is this to a certain extent. Despite his misogynism and general racist attitude, he still is surprisingly reasonable at least to his minions. Although he sees other races as being inferior to demons, he won't hesitate to promote a select few individuals if they've proven their worth to him, and he's even gone so far as to make one human into one of his top generals. He has even spared some enemies and recruited them in order to benefit from their skills. He is willing to let one mistake pass but if an officer repeats the same mistake or keeps acting disrespectfully, he won't hesitate to punish them.

Nobuo Iwasaki

"Your wish is my command."

A colonel who is drunk most of the time, he acts as one of the Northern Horde's commanders. Despite his rugged look and casual behaviour he is in fact quite skilled when he decides to get serious. He is plagued by the guilt he feels for betraying his homeland but feels that serving the demons is a better alternative than the total annihilation of humans in Yamato.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Villain: He serves his demon overlords reluctantly but nevertheless gives his best in order to get the job done and keep as many of his men alive as possible. He sees the demon campaign as a necessary evil and hopes that he and his men will someday be rewarded for their services and granted an autonomous area where they can live relatively free from demon oppression.
  • The Alcoholic: He is drunk most of the time. It is his way of coping with the atrocities that happen around him as well as the guilt that he feels for betraying his homeland Yamato for the demon cause.
  • Badass Mustache: Just look at him. It can't get more badass than that.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: He seems rather mean but he has a soft spot which is the eventual liberation of Yamato from the demon yoke.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Nobuo is drunk quite often and looks rather pathetic when compared to other officers. However, when push comes to shove, he'll drop the act and show exactly why he has the high rank of colonel in the horde.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: He does this very often because of his tragic past.
  • The Rival: To Samachi. They used to be friends and comrades in the Yamatian army until they chose different sides after the demons took over. Nobuo regrets that he has to oppose Samachi in the field of battle but sees no other alternative because he knows Samachi won't join him.
  • Turncoat: He used to work for Yamato but then became a minion of the demons after realizing that it was no use fighting against them. He is haunted by his actions, and most loyalist Yamatians consider him a traitor.
  • We Used to Be Friends: To Samachi who now opposes him and the horde.

Refan d'Zarnagon

"So what if we're just drunken fools, Ax? Our feelings are real, and that's what matters! We've been running away for years, but it's time to end that once and for all. If we're going to face hardships, so be it. Let them come. However, when that happens, we won't have to run away anymore because we can face any hardships from now on... together!"

A half-demon thief and husband of Skye. He used to be idealistic but became more cynical over the years. The wars have taken their toll on him, and years of fighting against deadly foes has turned him into a man who is not far from becoming a monster himself. He struggles with his demonic side, his dark heritage which links him to a dangerous demon clan, and is torn between loving his wife Skye and his close friend Ax. Recently he has abandoned the Alliance and has joined the Northern Horde.

Associated tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Refan has a few: Reffie (by Skye), and Beardy or No-More-Beardy (by Ronove depending on whether Refan has a beard or not).
  • Battle Couple: He and Skye were this until the events in Remon during the Godslayer arc got them separated. They've yet to be reunited.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Refan grows this after his Heroic BSOD.
  • Becoming the Mask: He intended to join the Northern Horde at first to save his friends but also to infiltrate the demon hierarchy and learn their plans. However, the plan backfired when the demons used his psychological problems and helped unleash his demonic side. Although he still claims that he's only using the horde for his own ends, his actions prove that it isn't so clear-cut to him anymore because he has found kinship among demons who somewhat sympathize with his identity crisis as a half-demon.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Refan does this to his father when he confronts him in Vanna's dungeon, finally managing to accuse him for essentially leaving him to deal with his powers by himself. By this time he is too blinded by rage and frustration that his rant, while justified, fails to recognize his father's explanation of trying to atone for his previous bad deeds.
  • Childhood Friend: With Izael.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He has suffered a lot in his life but he has carried on despite all his losses. Past events have left their scars on him, however...
  • Dude in Distress: The Sirithai lizardmen capture Refan during the adventure in Vanna, and he ends up being saved from their clutches by none other than Ax.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: He often does his to make himself forget the things he's lived through.
  • Face Heel Turn: Happens to him after the Battle of Vanna. Although at first he joins the Northern Horde only to save his friends from certain demise, the demons quickly manipulate his insecurity and the guilt and anger he feels over Nalaen's death and unleash his demonic side, which is now free to do as it pleases. He embraces the dark path after confronting his imprisoned father in Vanna's dungeon.
  • Friendship Moment: With Izael before the meeting of Alliance delegates in Remonton.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Refan is a half-demon. He has trouble accepting his demonic heritage and tries to not use his demonic powers unless it's absolutely necessary.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Refan's single-minded goal of combating his enemies is slowly taking its toll on him. He's no longer the wide-eyed idealist he used to be and can now resort to rather brutal tactics which make him no better than those he fights against.
  • Heroic BSOD: He suffers a big one during the Second Battle of Myridia when he finds out that the demon lord Omaroch is in fact his father, his nemesis Zarnagon is his long-lost brother Kareth and they're members of a powerful demon clan destined to pave way for a demon invasion. He can't take the truth and flees from battle in terror, a moment which haunts him for years to come.
  • Hurting Hero: He is wrecked with guilt over not being able to save his loved ones and for not killing his brother and father when he had the chance, which led to the rise of the Godslayer.
  • Important Haircut: Refan does this after he joins the Northern Horde. Not only does he cut his hair but also shaves off his Beard of Sorrow to signify the change.
  • It Gets Easier: He freaks out the first time he kills someone even though that someone happened to be a psychotic villain. A decade of bloodshed later he's more than willing to cut the church's well-intentioned knights down by the dozen to protect his family. A few adventures later he's willing to kill an unarmed prisoner with almost no qualms whatsoever.
  • Love Triangle: With Ax and Skye. One is a very close friend who he shares a connection with, the other is his beloved wife.
  • Loveable Rogue: He keeps breaking the law but is friendly and stays loyal to his friends. However, the past war-torn years have slowly turned him into a more jaded version of his younger self.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He vows to avenge the death of his mentor Sullena and the capture of his friend Izael by hunting down the dark clerics who were responsible for it. This puts him on the path of becoming a rather self-destructive individual and triggers his demonic senses along the way. In fact him wanting to avenge his adoptive little sister Nalaen's death leads him down a dark path.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: Refan's demon self is only interested in itself and doesn't care if it hurts friends or foes as long as it gets what it wants. It actually expresses Refan's hidden feelings but does so in a very violent way. Thus Refan hesitates whenever he's asked to use his demonic powers because he's worried that once he changes, he can't turn back anymore. Recent events have shown a different way of looking at his demonic side, but it's unclear if the demon within has consumed his human side, allowed him to be his true self, or if the two sides have finally learned to coexist effectively.

Ronove Thanadar

"It's not what you do that defines you. What defines you is how well you rise after you've fallen."

A lunatic but well-meaning amnesiac who travelled with the Grand Alliance while bugging most of its members along the way. He is crazy about strawberry cakes. His weird plans have often helped the Alliance, and many heroes like his goofy personality. However, he's actually an amnesiac Dreadlord, and once he regains his memories, he stops being goofy and is torn between his friendship with lesser beings and his duty as a demon to conquer the world.

Associated tropes:

  • Amnesiac Dissonance: Ronove becomes a member of the Alliance and befriends many heroes. They tolerate him despite his silly antics. However, he's plagued by nightmares and by the time he confronts Leraje in Vanna, he finally regains his memories and powers. After he remembers he used to be a Dreadlord, he is torn between the friendship he has and his calling as a demon to enslave other races.
  • Bi the Way: Definitely. Ronove isn't afraid of chasing after the skirts (as the incidents in Vanna showed when he confronted clerics of Artemicia) and has had a passionate French kiss with a less than pleased Refan. This partly foreshadows that Ronove is a demon as demons are commonly bisexual by nature.
  • Big Bad Friend: To Nesa and Refan after he recovers his memories.
  • Cain and Abel: Ronove ended up betrayed by his jealous brother Leraje who gave him the amnesia he had through most of the saga. It's not until recently that Ronove has recovered his memories and finally remembers who he used to be and what part his brother had to do with the memory loss.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Ronove is the poster boy of this trope during his days as a wandering, goofy amnesiac. He often lapses into long rants about cake and misunderstands conversations. The most egregious example comes when he is impersonating King Marcus and has a rousing speech which goes well until he puts his own spin on it:

Ronove: There's something important that I must share with you before we begin our march. Something terrible happened last night, something that truly, should I say, PISSED ME OFF! Here's what happened. There's an inn in this city that has this amazing strawberry cake, but the last FIVE FREAKING TIMES I've tried to order it, they don't have it! This is clearly unacceptable! If the king can't eat his daily strawberry cake... man, if that isn't god-moding, I don't know what is! I also have another announcement to make: henceforth this day of the week shall be officially known as Cake Day! Strawberry cake will become our national food, and we'll build bakeries and stuff everywhere so that you, my dear subjects, can have your daily dose of this excellent dessert!

  • Dragon with an Agenda: He becomes this to Malphas out of all people after the Battle of Vanna. Although he is polite and follows orders, he keeps twisting his superior's orders to better suit his purposes, and he has a goal that somewhat differs from his peers' plans which he has kept secret for the time being. He also hasn't forgotten the people who were responsible for betraying him in the past and causing him amnesia...
  • Extreme Omnivore: He'll eat pretty much anything if he's hungry. However, his most favourite dessert is strawberry cake.
  • Jerkass Facade: Ronove is an interesting and complex example after he regains his memories. He acts like a generic cruel overlord in front of his peers and enemies, but also occasionally shows a quirky side which most accept as remnants of his former goofy personality (most notably him munching on cake and sand gnome legs). He has shown a less evil persona recently but quite subtly. He let his caught friends flee the occupied city alive while weaving a convincing enough tale to his superiors for the seemingly "evil" reasons he let the escape happen. He takes over the torturing of his former, captured master seemingly because he enjoys the cruel act, but in fact it's because letting others torture said person would be far more severe than what Ronove himself actually ends up doing to him. He openly manipulates Refan but does it for the man's own good because he sees Refan's demonic side useful and thus helps the man to grow into a warrior who doesn't have to fear for his life anymore. However, Ronove harbors more complex plans than most people think, and even the one person who realizes that things don't quite add up is still being manipulated by him into believing one thing while the truth is actually quite different. It's thus clear that he has some sense of honour, but he's also capable of acts of Cruel Mercy by twisting seemingly benevolent acts into something far more sinister for reasons that still remain unclear.
  • Manipulative Bastard: When he becomes the new Dreadlord of the Northern Horde, he quickly establishes himself as this. Not only does he manipulate Awar to walk into a scene which ends badly for Awar, he goads Refan to unleash his demonic side, makes himself seem insignificant and loyal to Malphas without revealing all his plans to him, and he breaks Omaroch's spirit in more ways than one to punish him for a past wrongdoing. All of these actions are linked on a deeper level and further Ronove's so far hidden agenda.
  • The Nicknamer: He likes to give goofy nicknames to people as any proper Cloudcuckoolander should... such as calling the bearded Refan "Beardy" and the shaven Refan "No-More-Beardy". After he recovers his memories, he uses such nicknames less frequently, unless he wants to subtly troll people.
  • Teacher-Student Romance: Implied with Ronove's close, almost fanatically loyal apprenticeship to Omaroch. The reason why he hangs around Refan so much is because Refan, being Omaroch's son, looks remarkably like a younger Omaroch, which stirs Ronove's memories of his crush on Omaroch.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: The cause of Ronove's amnesia is his beloved brother betraying and attempting to kill him. The shock was too much for Ronove and, combined with a fall from a very high place which he barely survived, resulted in this trope.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Nesa when they end up on opposite sides.

Vassago

The sly herald of the Northern Horde, he constantly wishes to grow stronger and has a fixation on Omaroch whom he used to torture for information in the past. He loves a good challenge and constantly flaunts his power to his equals while also taunting them. Despite his disrespectful act, he is also cunning and does his best to mask his sinister intentions.

Associated tropes:

  • The Brute: He is huge, muscular and skilled in the use of various melee weapons.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He tends to resort to this at times and taunts both enemies and friends alike with much delight.
  • Herald: He acts as the herald of the Northern Horde, announcing their impending invasion to their enemies.
  • Stalker Without a Crush: Vassago is this to Omaroch. After having spent years torturing Omaroch and extracting information from him, he became obsessed with him, particularly after Omaroch betrayed the demons again and joined Alent after the Cataclysm. He now wants to cause as much pain to Omaroch's body and psyche as possible while proving that he is stronger than him.

Southern Horde

Hepnaz L'invrad

"Those who do not plan in war do not survive."

An old, cunning archdemon who plotted to take over the other hordes over decades. He succeeds in subduing another horde under his will, but he ends up betrayed by his closest lieutenant at the most crucial moment.

Associated tropes:

  • The Chessmaster: He plots behind others' backs and succeeds in catching Malphas off guard.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: He's one of the archdemons and quite cunning.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He's betrayed in a critical moment by his closest underling, Dreadlady Gin'vel, who turns out to be Nina Heeate of the Eastern Horde in disguise.
  • Evil Old Folks: Very much so.
  • Killed Off for Real: Sad but true. A master schemer was betrayed by the very underling he thought he had under control.
  • Smug Snake: Hepnaz has the nerve to taunt Malphas and reveal his plans to him while making absolutely sure that Malphas realizes that Hepnaz is the one in control.

Iblis al-Djinn

"Lesser beings always take things at face value, never bothering to look deeper. Their ignorance will be their downfall."

A demon who posed as a human vizier. He won Adela's trust and rose into a high position in the sultanate but kept his true allegiance a secret. He eventually betrayed the sultanate by deliberately orchestrating events which led to the city of Vanna becoming vulnerable to an impending demon invasion.

Associated tropes:

  • Blond Guys Are Evil: Very much so.
  • The Corrupter: He helped turn Adela into a villain and even affected Razoul to an extent. He was the servant of the Defiler, after all, so it is only appropriate that he too shares some of his master's powers by defiling things which are good and twisting them for dark purposes.
  • Death Is Dramatic: He ends up beaten and devoured by Leraje.
  • Evil Chancellor: The woman Iblis serves is evil as well, but Iblis never was loyal to her even when he ostensibly served as her advisor. He appeared to be loyal but was only using Adela as a pawn without her knowing and did what he could to slowly weaken Vanna from within so that his demon masters could invade the city and the surrounding desert with ease.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Oh yeah.
  • The Man Behind The Woman: Iblis to Adela. He was instrumental in fueling her rage and helping her kill her sister and take over the throne of Vanna as well as unite the Sarquil clans into what became the sultanate... but he did it all just to further his own goals which were far more sinister.
  • Meaningful Name: Well, his name has the satanic Iblis and the genie-ish djinn in them so what do you expect? The name also refers to his demonic origins.
  • The Mole: He's ostensibly working for Adela but his true loyalty lies with the demons of the Southern Horde.
  • Our Demons Are Different

Nina Heeate L'andariel

"So simple, the minds of men... rather disappointing, really."

Archdemon and duchess of the Southern Horde. She shares her older sister Vaetris's goals but also likes to distance herself from her. She betrayed Duke Hepnaz and took his place as well as tricked Malphas into falling under a geas which forces him to obey her.

Associated tropes:

Western Horde

Naamah

The half-demon daughter and right hand of Pazuzu. She had a fling with Jono and later saved him from a certain death, which didn't please her father at all. She seems to be nicer than most higher demons.

Associated tropes:

Pazuzu

Archdemon and duke of the Western Horde. An obese monster who lives a life of luxury in his well-protected palace. He is over-protective of his half-demon daughter Naamah.

Associated tropes:

Saleos

A demon bounty hunter sent by Pazuzu to track down Jono Renfield and bring him back to Yamato dead or alive.

Associated tropes:

Individual Factions

Akai Tora

Damian Resta

"They are killing us out there, and all you do here is plan. Plans that nearly get us wiped out! Have you no soul, no mind, no thought on anyone but yourself?"

A rebellious member of the Akai Tora who thinks the army's leaders should act more aggressively towards demons. After he loses his friends to the demons, he starts acting recklessly and frees the imprisoned Fellowship of Maar Sul before going to confront demons who try to take over the army's fortress.

Associated tropes:

  • Death Is Dramatic: He fends off a demon attack and takes out an enormous demon flyer with the last of his strength.
  • Rebellious Rebel: When the Maar Sulais fellowship is captured, he questions the Shogun about it and later goes so far as to help free them from their cells.

Hiroshi Takamoto

"Today we reclaim Vulpengaard, or die with honour."

The Shogun of the remaining Akai Tora who wishes to liberate the enslaved Yamatians from the demon oppressors. He was on the losing side of the war against the Grand Alliance but is willing to let old grudges stay in the past and instead work together with his old enemies to oppose a new one. However, recent developments left him temporarily blind thanks to poison and he suspects foul play on the Alliance's part. He has unrequited feelings for Varalia.

Associated tropes:

  • All Love Is Unrequited: He fell in love with Varalia, a gaijin elfess, but due to his duty and lower rank in the Yamatian military he couldn't confess his feelings for her until it was too late. Having lived in isolation for years, he hasn't heard anything from her and assumes she died in the demons' claws. What he doesn't know is that Varalia is very much alive and would've returned his feelings if the war and the demon invasion of Yamato hadn't driven them to different paths.
  • Anti-Villain: He was one of the few truly sympathetic Yamatians during the Great War and while he still feels in the future rebirth of the might of Yamato, he is still capable of working with his old foes in the Alliance in order to save his occupied homeland and hinder the demons. However, he puts his country above all else and is willing to act as antagonist to the heroes if there is no other alternative.
  • A Father to His Men: Hiroshi deeply cares about his men, and they respect him as a competent and intelligent leader.
  • Four-Star Badass: He's the Shogun of the badass Akai Tora so of course he's a badass too in a battlefield. He had to prove himself in the war and impressed the scattered survivors of the Tora to become their new leader after the Cataclysm.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: An in-universe example. Hiroshi's parents named him after the famous hero Hiroshi Hayabusa who lived in a previous age and whom the parents revered as the golden standard which every Yamatian should strive for.

Samachi Nomura

"Your Alliance unleashed the power of the gods on this world and fled with tail between its legs when the demons appeared and destroyed entire cities. Our brave men, women and children were the only ones who kept the demons at bay until the rampage ended! If it weren't for us Yamatians, the demons would've overrun your precious little nations in mere days!"

The second-in-command of the Akai Tora and an old foe of the Grand Alliance. He's deeply loyal to whoever happens to be the Shogun and believes in a united Yamato which will one day drive away the demon invaders. He's sworn to hunt down his friend Amano's killer who happens to be Ax, a woman he fought against during the Great War but who is now acting as his ally against the demons. This conflicting loyalty is making his life one full of pain and anger.

Associated tropes:

  • Avenging the Villain: Samachi has sworn to avenge the death of Amano, a fellow officer and a dear friend of his, who fell to Ax's blade during the Great War.
  • Colonel Badass: He's the second-in-command of the badass Akai Tora so naturally he's got to exhibit his men's traits too. He's defeated a bunch of demons in single combat, which is an impressive feat for a human warrior with no magical abilities whatsoever.
  • Honor Before Reason: An interesting case of this. There are times where he's more than willing to flee from overwhelming odds and thus disgrace himself so that he can fight another day and learn from his mistakes. However, he's also sworn to avenge his friend Yasunori Amano's death and is willing to jeopardize the Akai Tora and The Grand Alliance's alliance just to defeat Amano's killer Ax in a duel to the death.
  • We Used to Be Friends: To Nobuo who nows serves the Northern Horde.

Black Hunters

Seishuu "Shuu" Kazejin

"¨Your assistance... would be... wonderful. I have music. And stories. And magic."

A mischievous kitsune who likes to disguise himself as a young man. He can cast elaborate illusions and owes a life debt to Kaizoku. He doesn't care much for morality and only wishes to see and experience everything the world has to offer.

Associated tropes:

Yousei Kaizoku

"I want what they want, or I want to keep them from achieving their aim."

An eccentric elven pirate with a tangled past who began a guerrilla movement called the Black Hunters to liberate Yamato from demons. He has opposed the Alliance on several occasions but it is mostly nothing personal on his end; he is only doing what he thinks benefits him the most in the long run.

Associated tropes:

  • Adventure Couple: With Shuu.
  • Anti-Villain: Depending on one's definition he can be either this or an antihero. He has worked for the villainous Yamato Empire in the past and opposed the heroes many times as well as committed many heinous crimes, but he is still a sympathetic individual who does what he thinks is necessary.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: He was tortured and brainwashed by the Yamatians who made him become one of their naval commanders during the Great War. He committed many crimes while under Yamatian control, but after the Cataclysm he broke free and went off to do his own thing. Despite his animosity towards the Yamatian high command, he still cares enough for his homeland's common folk to save them from demonic slavery with his Black Hunters whenever he can.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He has a black one.
  • Our Elves Are Better
  • Pirate: He is a pirate captain, in fact.

Grey Cult

Varalia Earthhaven

"The most effective way isn't always the most honourable way."

The elven captain of High Propher Xerathas's guards, she's one of the Grey Cult's most prominent members. She has been raped twice but she hasn't succumbed to fear, anger or self-loathing. Instead she's become more determined than ever to fight for the right cause and make sure Xerathas doesn't turn out to be as corrupt as his father Zarnagon. She had a happy reunion with her long-lost daughter Unithien but the two were separated again when they found themselves on opposite sides of the war.

Associated tropes:

  • Action Mom: She's the mother of two kids and can kick anyone's ass anytime.
  • Anti-Villain: Despite opposing the Alliance on multiple occasions, Varalia is a rather sympathetic character who cares for her men and wishes to see the world become a better place for people to live in. She also holds no grudges against her daughter who works for her enemies although she wishes that her daughter would finally join her so that they could be together.
  • The Dragon: She's a loyal second-in-command to Xerathas.
  • Good Parents: Varalia is this to her daughter Unithien and would continue to be the best mother ever if only they hadn't ended up on opposite sides of the war. Still, neither she nor her daughter will harm the other and will constantly try to persuade each other to join the other's side.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Varalia believes in some inherent goodness of people although her experiences from the past haven't been nice.
  • Our Elves Are Better
  • Pet the Dog: Her interactions with Takamoto and Unithien show that she's not as cold a character as many assume. She cares for Takamoto's idealism and loves her daughter Unithien dearly.
  • Rape as Drama: She's been raped twice, and those events have left their marks on her as in emotional trauma and births of her children.
  • Red Baron: Varalia's nickname is the Sapphire Ghost, which makes many of her foes tremble with fear.

Xerathas d'Zarnagon

"I may not be able to stop the wheels of fate, but I will change the way they turn."

A revered leader of the Godslayer-worshipping Grey Cult. He will do anything for the Godslayer and is convinced that he's working for the right cause even when his plans involve the suffering of many. He has confronted the heroes on many occasions but has always managed to escape from their clutches to meet them another day. He is particularly interested in the swords Dawn and Dusk.

Associated tropes:

  • Above Good and Evil: He'll do whatever necessary to reach his goals.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Xerathas's greatest strength is actually his speech. He has often convinced the heroes to do various things which have later turned out to have rather big consequences, not all of which have been in the heroes' favour.
  • Overlord, Jr.: He's the son of Zarnagon who was one of the evil sorcerers of Chaos during the Great War. Although he tries to avoid using violence, he's willing to manipulate people to get what he wants just like his father did.
  • Squishy Wizard: He uses powerful magic but can't take a physical beating.
  • The Stoic: Xerathas shows no emotion at all.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Because the heroes constantly derail his plans, he has to adapt to situations to use the tools given to him to get the job done.

Magestar

Amy

The sole female master of the Magestar, she has proven time and time again that she's one of the most powerful members of the mage school. She led the school while Grandmaster Josiah was away, but after his return she has returned back to her post as a regular master. She's a kind person albeit with a sharp tongue, and she won't hesitate to strike back if the school is threatened.

Associated tropes:

  • Silk Hiding Steel: She looks calm and regal but if she's threatened, she won't hesitate to impale her opponent down with extreme prejudice.

Balthazar Bannock

The youngest person to ever become the Magestar master, he has turned out to be quite a promising mage with knowledge that has surprised even the older masters.

Associated tropes:

  • Blind Seer: Despite having lost his vision, he can still see magical auras in his mind's eye.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: He's relatively young and yet has become one of the esteemed masters because of the amount of knowledge he has gathered.

Dantalion

A mysterious master with burning eyes who covers the lower half of his face and keeps his hood on at all times. He can see into other people's minds to an extent, and he has a dark, disturbing aura around him. He often acts in a quirky, sinister manner which upsets those around him.

Associated tropes:

  • Glowing Eyes: He has these.
  • In the Hood: He keeps his hood on at all times and covers the lower half of his face.
  • Odd Friendship: He and Shuu got along well as he protected Shuu in his fox form from demon assassins. This partnership lasted only for a while, though, and he let Shuu return to Kaizoku after their contract had come to an end.

Josiah Amdusias

The wise grandmaster of the Magestar academy, he has made a deal with the Magicracy of Alent in the hopes of stopping the Grey Cult's advances on the mage school. He is an old friend of many of the heroes of the Grand Alliance.

Associated tropes:

  • Cool Old Guy: He is a knowledgeable and likable man who considers himself to be too old to help people but still helps those in need anyway because he cannot see people suffer.
  • Familiar: He has a cat familiar named Artagel.

Naberius

A gentle, intelligent elven master who wishes to better the conditions of the students in the school. He's often the voice of reason during the meetings of the masters and is always welcoming new students to the Magestar.

Associated tropes:

  • Cool Old Guy: An old, kind gentleman with a curiosity and playfulness of a younger person.

Magicracy of Alent

Crowe Lley

A promiscuous councillor who uses sex to study magic. Called the "black sheep of the council", he isn't afraid of dabbling in the dark arts and causing an uproar in the more conservative members of the council. He's a free spirit, a party attitude and has an open mind to particularly chaotic schools of magic.

Associates tropes:

Durin Halfstaff

A stout dwarven councillor who detests dark magics.

Associates tropes:

  • Combat Medic: Although he's a white mage, he can kick people's asses with his wide variety of light spells.
  • Un-Equal Rites: He absolutely detests anything to do with dark magic which he sees as tainted and not worthy of academic study.

Gertrude Kirkpatrick

A councillor with encyclopaedic memorization. She knows all of Alent's libaries inside out and is the youngest member of the council.

Associates tropes:

  • Badass Bookworm: Despite her looking like a bookworm, she can also kick ass when needed because she has mastered many obscure spells.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She's wise despite being in her late 20's and knows many of the books in Alent's library quite well.

Gweneth

A half-elven councillor who is remarkably tolerant and kind compared to the rest of the council. She wants to see the good in most people and is one of the best negotiators Alent has to offer.

Associates tropes:

  • Silk Hiding Steel: She acts like a kind and polite lady, but if she or her companions are threatened, she won't hesitate to use her white magic to attack her enemies.

Harrad U'niviel

"Strength spawns from need, power from arrogance. I can say that I'm strong enough at the moment."

An old mage whos is member of the council of Alent. Obsessed with creating the perfect candy machine and sometimes acting goofy, he's nevertheless wise and observant and spots things that many people often miss. He's worked with the Alliance on some occasions and is torn between whether to trust the Crimson Coalition or not.

Associated tropes:

  • Battle in the Rain: Happens to him when he's ambushed by dwarven assassins in Alent during a storm.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's almost 100 years old and is still badass enough to almost defeat a frickin' goddess in a duel.
  • The Dumbledore: Although he is old and acts goofy at times, he is also an extremely wise and powerful mage.

Jemuel

"Once more the threat of the gods and those clinging to ancient, diluted bloodlines rears its ugly head, but this time, we are here to stand tall against them! In the coming days it will be your resolve, Alentians, that sees us through to a glorious new era of freedom!"

An archmage with a tangled past. Originally Jemuel served King Unne until he plotted the king's death and usurped the throne but a bunch of heroes defeated him seemingly for good. However, the resurrection of Leon Alcibiates allowed him to return as a servant of the Underworld. The resurrected Jemuel was influenced by the friendship of his new companions, however, which eventually drove him to rebel against the Underworld and take his fate into his own hands. Now he rules as the lord of a Libaterran city of mages and wishes to free people from the shackles of the gods and the Godslayer while opposing the Crimson Coalition's goals along the way.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Anti-Christ: After some soul-searching, Jemuel chooses to openly defy the Underworld which has wanted to use him as the champion of Death.
  • Back from the Dead: He returns to the world as a revenant.
  • Bastard Understudy: Jemuel is this to Dante whom he betrays in a crucial moment.
  • Cloning Blues: He has had three successful clones over the years thanks to Dante's experiments but he later destroyed them because he saw them as mockeries of himself.
  • Divide and Conquer: Jemuel's tactic during the Great War when he pitted the Grand Alliance and Yamato Empire against one another and carved his empire while the two armies were busy fighting.
  • Magic Knight: Jemuel is a powerful mage who is also proficient in sword-fighting.
  • Manipulative Bastard: No matter whose side he's currently on, he's always been good at pulling the strings and making people dance to his tune.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Jemuel is a revenant who is driven by his desire to increase knowledge and free people from the shackles of celestial beings such as gods and the Godslayer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Jemuel becomes this after he has freed himself from the Underworld's influence.
  • Regent for Life: Jemuel became this both when he took over the kingdom of Cardia and when he built the city of Alent.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wishes to unite Libaterra under his rule in order to combat the ever-growing demon hordes. He also wishes to free people from the gods' influence.

Malek Illuvius

An elven councillor and a master of the arcane arts. He's proud to the point of being arrogant to anyone not being on his level. Despite this he doesn't quite show the same unrestrained disdain as Trittledin and is more regal in his interactions.

Associates tropes:

  • The Proud Elite: He was raised in a noble elven family and hasn't forgotten his bloodline. He seems himself as one of the most powerful mages in Alent and rightfully so, but this means he sometimes tend to act rather cold towards those who don't share his passion with magic or aren't on his level.

Omaroch d'Zarnagon

"I'm done running away."

A rebellious archdemon who is the father of Refan and Kareth and the master of Ronove Thanadar. After the dark god Mardük's death, Omaroch found a purpose for his newfound freedom and began atoning for the sins he had committed while he had been serving the forces of Chaos. He's now helping Jemuel and fighting against demons because he doesn't wish the humans, whom he respects, to fall into darkness. He's also faced both his parents in combat and is trying to find a way to explain his actions to his sons and grandsons.

Associated tropes:

  • Arch Enemy: Omaroch considers his parents as this because both of them have tried to use him for their own ends and have made his loved ones suffer. His parents feel that he has betrayed their cause and see him as a dangerous heretic that needs to be disposed of after he has suffered suitably long in their grip.
  • The Atoner: Omaroch becomes this after Mardük's death. He has done awful things and wishes to repay humanity by giving them hope and helping them combat the demon hordes. He also wishes to bond with his sons despite their differences.
  • Beast and Beauty: Omaroch, an archdemon, had a human wife named Delora.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: After Omaroch is captured by his brothers, he is tortured and mindraped for several years until eventually the news of his wife's death as well as the (supposed) corruption of his sons is enough to make him break. He is exposed to dark god Mardük's power and becomes an agent of Chaos, willing to do whatever is necessary to fulfill the god's and demons' agenda. Despite this he still shows some bits of remorse but can't help but following the orders that are given to him. However, once Mardük dies and his influence fades, Omaroch breaks free from demon control and chooses to openly oppose them once again as well as atone for the crimes he committed as their slave.
  • Black Sheep: Compared to the rest of his clan, he is not xenophobic and is actually willing to side with humans instead of aiding his kin.
  • Defector From Decadence: He chooses to oppose his fellow demons in order to give humans a chance to live in the world.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: Omaroch used to be the leader of the now-nonexisting Central Horde. Despite no longer being in charge of a horde, he is still an archdemon and is thus quite powerful.
  • Disappeared Dad: He was this to his sons for a while. The reason was that he was captured and brainwashed over several years, and by the time he returned, he was molded into a servant of Mardük.
  • Dude in Distress: He ends up imprisoned by the Northern Horde while he is on a mission to assassinate his mother.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He is the father of Refan and Zarnagon and the grandfather of Gabriel, Ildor and Xerathas.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Omaroch married Delora, a human cleric of a deity who directly opposed his master Mardük, and had two half-demon children with her. Both of their respective clergies and gods saw this union as an abomination not only because of their opposing faiths but also because humans and demons weren't meant to produce offspring, and the family ended up persecuted for many years until Omaroch was captured and imprisoned and Delora was killed in a raid to their home.
  • My Greatest Failure: Omaroch still laments the fact that he was unable save his wife's life and prevent his sons from falling into darkness.
  • Mysterious Protector: Omaroch to Refan. He helps Refan not only because they're related but because Refan has an important part to play in Mardük's plans.
  • Odd Friendship: Richelieu, a human mage, and Omaroch, a demon lord, become close friends. During the time when Alent had a decadent court, they could only trust each other.
  • Teacher-Student Romance: Implied with his student Ronove's close, almost fanatically loyal apprenticeship to him. Demons are bisexual, after all, and it is very likely Omaroch chose his apprentice and lieutenant because of the deep friendship they shared prior to the demon invasion of Yamato.

Richelieu

"I can't deny my past."

A loyal follower and advisor of Jemuel, he temporarily became the regent of Alent while Jemuel was incapacitated. He is smart and powerful and has a pragmatic view on many things, feeling that mortals no longer have to rely on gods and that the pursuit of knowledge and peace justify even cruel acts along the way.

Associated tropes:

  • The Atoner: After causing the death of a person who turns out to be his brother, he finally realizes that he's been brainwashed to work for a dark god. After that he openly rebels against the Clergy of Mardük, joins up with Jemuel and tries to do what he can to help the world... even if his methods end up being not so friendly in the end.
  • Badass Bookworm: He looks meek but can pack quite a punch with his spells, even posing a threat to powerful warlocks.
  • Dead Older Brother: While executing a bunch of rebels, one of them turns out to be in fact his missing brother who calls out his true name Julian. The call triggers Richelieu's memories. After this Richelieu nearly goes insane from realizing that he has caused his brother's death and begins plotting to get rid of the Clergy of Mardük which took away his identity and caused the tragic event that he witnessed. That in turn leads him to begin a new, better life with the future of humankind in mind.
  • Odd Friendship: Richelieu, a human mage, and Omaroch, a demon lord, become close friends. During the time when Alent had a decadent court, they could only trust each other.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He is a poster boy of this. He can do evil things even as an Alentian but he won't cause unneeded suffering if it doesn't help him achieve his goals. He does do his best to avoid violence but is willing to break people if they threaten Alent's security.
  • Specs of Awesome: Just look at him. He never takes off his glasses, not even when facing powerful opponents in combat.
  • Squishy Wizard: He might not be the strongest guy around, but his knowledge of ancient magic is formidable.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wishes to unite his homeland Libaterra and put an end to the constant strife there and strengthen the land against an impending demon invasion... however, this means crushing any opposition along the way.

Schtolteheim "Raine" Reinbach III

The current captain of the Anti Mage Police. He's quite arrogant and cunning but also suffers from a short temper when things don't go his way.

Associates tropes:

  • The Captain: He's promoted as the captain of the Anti Mage Police after his predecessor's untimely death.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Schtolteheim prefers to be called Raine because he can't stand his first name. He is convinced that his parents were drunk when he was born and were trying to ask for more beer instead of naming him. Raine himself added the "III" to the end of his name during his teenage years, because he thought that if he had to have such a stupid name, it might as well sound important.
  • Insufferable Genius: He can't stop bragging how intelligent and crafty he is, and he's actually just that good. However, his flaw is that although he's quite skilled, he's still nowhere near the level of the most skilled mages in the city no matter how much he likes to think he's above them.
  • The Proud Elite: He was born into a wealthy family and was the top of his class. This has made him quite arrogant, and his status as the captain of the AMP certainly doesn't help matters.

Sydelius

A councillor who specializes in engineering. He has succeeded in crafting various magical items, although his crowning achievement to date has been building the first functional airship in millennia.

Associates tropes:

  • The Engineer: Sydelius works as both a councillor but also as an engineer. His greatest achievement to date has been to reverse engineer the ancient Alentian designs and create the first airship in millennia.
  • Grease Monkey: He's quite dirty because he spends his time in the forges fixing things.

Trittledin

"Do you think we're running some kind of charity in here? Well, think again! Quid pro quo: that's the name of the game around here!"

An arrogant member of the Council of Mages who sees all non-mages as inferior beings. He has questioned the council's actions on many occasions but only his fear of the councillors' power has kept him in a leash. Despite his attitude he knows not to anger his peers too much and his power and intellect are enough for the council to not demote him for the time being. However, he is secretly plotting to take the reins and become the supreme ruler of Alent.

Associated tropes:

  • Hot-Blooded: He loses his nerve whenever things don't go his way or if he thinks someone is questioning his authority. Needless to say this happens often and is a source of amusement (or irritation depending on a person) for the Council of Mages.
  • Jerkass: He can be charming but is so arrogant and belittling that he angers many in the Alliance with his behaviour.
  • Smug Snake: Very much so, constantly belittling the Alliance members whenever he can while claiming to be one of the most skilled mages out there.

William Charles "Warley" Hil'neer

"Aren't you proud, old man? Aren't you delighted? You're the master with the strongest apprentice in the world!"

Harrad's apprentice who constantly bemoans how his master concentrates too much on silly things like candy machines instead of more important matters. He turns out to be the culprit behind the mage murders which have been plaguing Alent, and ends up attacking Harrad in order to leech his powers for himself.

Associated tropes:

  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He worked as the seemingly obedient apprentice to Harrad, but was in fact responsible for the mage murders and eventually planned to finish off Harrad as well and leech his powers to grow stronger.
  • I Have Your Wife: He blackmails the Anti Mage Police officer La'melle into helping him cover up his murder tracks by threatening to kill La'melle's wife and children if he doesn't comply.
  • Mana Drain: He murders his victims by draining out all their mana and adding it to his own, thus growing more and more powerful the more mages he drains.

Underworld

Arbriel Conrad

"Misery. That's all that's left in this forsaken land. There is no hope of salvation."

A disillusioned cleric who joined the Totenkopfs in an effort to weed out non-believers. His dreams of utopia led him to take drastic measures, and in the end he lost his life on the battlefield. However, due to coming in contact with the Plague of Undeath, he didn't fully die and became one of the few sentient undead. He now wants to increase the number of the undead in the world and make the world feel his pain.

Associated tropes:

Death

A chilling, sinister being of immense power who rules over the Land of the Dead and commands the dead with an iron grip. He has been subtly manipulating the events of various planes of existence over several millennia.

Associated tropes:

  • Bigger Bad: He has manipulated events in various planes of existence since he seized power in the Land of the Dead and has been behind several people's corruption into BigBads over the three ages.
  • The Chessmaster: He is a master manipulator who has the patience to corrupt individuals over a very long span of time.
  • Fallen Hero: There used to be the god Dreamweaver whom the Nameless Evil corrupted and merged with. This union gave birth to the being which became known as Death.

Various

Deidra Finian

A female necromancer who aided Thanatos in his goals. She ended up framed by Persephone and Jezebeth for crimes she didn't commit, and the heroes slew her and realized too late they had been tricked. When the demons nearly triumphed, she returned from death to help heroes set right what once went wrong and sacrificed her spiritual essence to thwart the demons' plans with Thanatos.

Associated tropes:

  • Anti-Hero: A brutal version of this, willing to sacrifice many innocents to reach her goals. Once she got to know the Alliance a bit better, she became slightly more trusting but still was bound by her honour to finish what she had begun.
  • Honor Before Reason: Her justification for not telling the Grand Alliance why she really was involved with the Barca family.
  • Necromancer: She was one of the few necromancers who tried to resurrect the Old Ways.

Thanatos Barca

A wily elven necromancer who wished to bring back the Old Ways of Necromancy by any means possible. He used the heroes of the Grand Alliance to his own ends, which were to bring back ancient tomes and rescue his missing daughter Persephone from the Coalition. He ended up betrayed by Persephone out of all people, but he later helped out the heroes even the odds by thwarting the demons' plans with Deidra.

Associated tropes:

  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wasn't exactly the nicest person and had ambitious goals, but he still had his sense of honour.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He's slain by his daughter Persephone.
  • Necromancer: He was one of the oldest necromancers still alive and yearned to resurrect the Old Ways.

Yurius

"Let it all burn!"

An extremely powerful and cunning archdemon who has been sealed in another plane of existence twice. He has appeared in every age of tGA and is currently manipulating several villains in a bid for freedom. If he is ever freed, he won't stop until the whole world is reduced to ashes.

Associated tropes:

  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: He is a very powerful archdemon. However, he is also quite insane, willing to destroy the whole world. Some demons admire his strength, but most demons fear or hate him for his omnicidal views.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Became this after Sydney Losstarot was killed in the First Age. Part of his modus operandi became to avenge Sydney's death by making the whole world burn in his name.
  • Enfante Terrible: He first appeared in form of a child who set family houses on fire. However, he grew as his powers increased until he assumed his terrifying adult form.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Some scholars suspect that Yurius's roaring rampage in the First Age was caused by the need to avenge the death of Sydney Losstarot, the only person he presumably cared for and perhaps even loved as a father figure of sorts. However, others claim that Sydney's death merely meant that the leash to keep Yurius in check was finally gone and that he freed himself to fulfill his goals which would result in the destruction of the world whether Sydney had lived or not.
  • The Man Behind the Man: To various villains. This time he acts a lot more subtly, using his various unsuspecting pawns to his advantage. Even if one pawn fails, he still has several others whom he can use to further his goals.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Unlike his previous appearances, he has seemed to have learned his lession from previous dealings. Although he is still very evil and willing to kill everything, he now uses demonic trickery to gain followers and make them aid his agenda. So far he is manipulating at least Azriel, Etna, Malphas, and Ned in his bid for freedom.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: He turns into this after Sydney Losstarot kicks the bucket. He hasn't recovered from it since and is constantly plotting to make the whole world burn in his name.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He has been sealed twice, and both sealings (called Banishments) affected the world. He is now actively trying to break free for the third time, and his hatred burns even brighter than ever before.

Pantheon

Gods of Darkness

Artemicia

The Goddess of Healing.

Associated tropes:

  • Daddy's Little Villain: She is Nergal's daughter and as wicked as he is.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: She is considered a benevolent deity but is anything but. Only her most devoted clerics know her true nature and are okay with it.
  • Warts and All: Her half-god son Leon Alcibiates seeks her out to get her approval, but Leon quickly learns that Artemicia is not as nice as the clergy has led him to believe. A few heroes since then have learned Artemicia's true nature as well and are now opposing her openly.

Mardük

The God of Chaos.

Associated tropes:

  • Big Bad: He took this role during the Chaos War in the First Age and became the true Big Bad at the end of the Great War in the Third Age.
  • Death Is Dramatic: He is devoured by the Godslayer, which leads to the Cataclysm.
  • Fallen Hero: He was quite heroic until he lost his brother Dreamweaver to the Nameless Evil. The grief over his brother's loss along with his half-god son Kagetsu's betrayal of the gods and the Nameless Evil's subtle manipulation eventually turned him into a twisted version of his former self.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was this after being sealed at the end of the Chaos War. It took him several millennia until he was released at the end of the Great War.

Nergal

The God of War.

Associated tropes:

  • Blood Knight: He is ultimately this albeit in a more villainous way. He constantly tries to manipulate events in order to cause more bloodshed although he also has ambitions to become the god of gods. He is not foolish enough to actually get himself in a position that might get him killed, though, but he has nothing agaisnt fighting powerful enemies through host bodies.

Gods of Light

Cardia

The God of Order.

Associated tropes:

  • Cool Old Guy: He is quite old and frail and has a weird sense of humour.
  • Death Is Dramatic: He is devoured by the Godslayer, which leads to the Cataclysm.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He is generally one of the more benevolent deities but depending on his mood he can be quite stubborn, cowardly, indifferent and somewhat self-centered.
  • It's All About Me: He ends up doing this by the time the Third Age begins by telling his followers that the other gods don't exist. His motivations for doing so might have been to aid mankind in the long run, but others justifiably argue that it was a very questionable action to do.

Hephaestus

The God of Smithing.

Associated tropes:

  • The Blacksmith: He is the patron deity of these and is quite good at forging things himself as well.

Paedün

The God of Knowledge.

Associated tropes:

Associated tropes:

  • Bed Trick: In order to trick the paladin Nesa into sleeping with her, she disguises herself as his lover Rhylian.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She seems nice albeit ditzy at first but later shows a more ambitious, sinister side when she reveals her plans of bringing back the Andain to the world and make her the goddess of all other gods.
  • Double Standard Rape (Divine on Mortal): She tricks Nesa into sleeping with her so that she can become pregnant and give birth to the first half-god child in millennia.

Shakkan

The God of Beasts.

Associated tropes:

  • The Beast Master: He is pretty much the lord of most beasts, having created the monsters and the lizardfolk.
  • Captured Super Entity: He has been trapped twice: first by Nergal into a chained host body in the Ruined Kingdom, and then by Awar into a shard of Krystallopyr in Xibalba.
  • Mad God: Millennia in imprisonment have left him rather unstable. Despite his quirky acts, he can listen to reason but his mood can swing quickly from one extreme to the other.
