The Mask (film)/Nightmare Fuel

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

While the movie has been lightened up, there were still some scenes that were scary and worthy of the comics:

  • The Opening scene. A diver working with an underwater construction crew comes across an old treasure chest. His crew on the boat warn him they are lowering another pipe, but he's preoccupied with opening the chest. Just when he gets the chain off the pipe comes off the lowering chain and crushes him. To make matters worse, the end of the pipe knocks the chest around unleashing the titular mask into the world. That aside it's sure to scare the hell out of anyone who's worked in construction and witnessed an accident or two.
  • The Golf Club scene. It looks like something straight out of a gritty mafia film, especially Niko's speech. To reiterate, much of why Dorian is planning a bank job, is because he wants enough money to take down Niko and become his own mob boss. Niko catches wind of it and has him tortured, by making him hold a golf tee in his mouth. So he can whack it off with a 9-iron club, in a game of virtual Golf. He threatens to do worse to him if he doesn't leave town in a week. It's one of the few moments you'd actually feel sorry for Dorian.

Nikko:: The cops, ah... tried to shut the club down this morning. They say you've been using the place to run your own small-time scams. I hear things like that, and I start losing my concentration. And my game, it goes straight to HELL! You could too. I'm fed up with you, Dorian. But I'm gonna cut you a break. One week to get out of town. After that, I'll use your empty little skull to break in my new 9-iron.

  • When Dorian puts on the mask, he's pure Nightmare Fuel. It was like they split the Big Head Persona into two separate entities. The first being Ipkiss' persona which aside from a few moments of petty revenge, he is goofy and fun loving. Whereas, Dorian unleashes the more murderous and bloodthirsty side.
