The Runaway Guys/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: A comment on Episode 2 of Yoshi's Tropical Island compared the main three to Ed Edd and Eddy, with NCS being Ed, Chugga as Edd, and Jon as Eddy.
  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: With three of the most popular LPers on YouTube collaborating, this was to be expected.
    • The reveal of some of the competitors in the Smash bros. Brawl tournament caused this reaction, like Diabetus, who was previously rumored to be a guest Guy.
    • The post-Mario Party 2 announcement that Jon Paula would be joining the Guys for Mario Power Tennis.
    • Many people wanted Kirby's Return to Dream Land to be a LP, and then on May 18, 2012, it was announced as one.
  • Anticlimax Boss: The tournament finals, Jon vs. SyKhotic/Hunter, with Jon winning. The battle wasn't particularly exciting, and Hunter kept making bad jumps that cost himself the win.
  • Base Breaker: All three of the guys are this to some extent.
  • Broken Base: One has sprouted up between Team Jon (and Josh) vs. Team Chuggaa. It's more lighthearted than some examples, since Jon trying to kill Chuggaa is Played for Laughs by both Jon and Chuggaa.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Josh Jepson is this, and many were sad to see him gone after the second project. Jon even said that he'd want to work with him again in the future.
  • Fan Dumb: Three popular Let's Players playing a game where they're screwing each other over repeatedly. This was also to be expected.
    • Notably, the sheer amount of fans who actually thought Chuggaa quit The Runaway Guys at the end of Subspace Emissary Ep. 11.
    • When Diabetus beat Chugga in the Brawl tournament, Chugga's fans pretty much raged, saying how he deserved to win instead. The comment section later contained a lot of death threats for Diabetus.
    • See Anti-Climax Boss above. The fans were all whiny on how the whole thing turned out.
  • Fan Myopia:
    • Jon and NCS discover Chuggaa hasn't seen Back to The Future or Indiana Jones, or ever played a Metal Gear Solid game. The mind blowing rivals the time Jon found out Mario Party has canon.
      • This conversation is almost replicated exactly in the second LP when Josh finds out that Chuggaa hasn't seen said movies.
    • ProtonJon isn't immune to that himself. He doesn't watch Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, or a lot of TV for that matter.
    • History repeats itself when Tim reveals that he has never seen Scarface, meaning all three of them had this to one extent.
    • And again when Chuggaa says he doesn't like the jazz remix of Revenge of Meta Knight.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Many people during the Brawl tournament think Chuggaa and Donnabellez are cute together.
  • Fridge Brilliance
    • Jon often has the most number of lives during the run as the viewers know it. Think back to the original Kaizo LP and the following words in the final main episode:

Jon: I've got 37 lives, I'm set.

Jon: What is this? No seriously, what is this?

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One of the beta names for the channel, Loud Players, turned out to be true. During LP #2's recording, the guys accidentally woke up a lady by being... well, too loud.
      • Starting at Episode 7 of Subspace Emmisary, they've been recording at Jon's house instead of a hotel like usual. Without having to worry about disturbing other people, they can be as loud as they want, and they take full advantage of this. Even Tim is yelling!
    • At one point in Mario Party, NCS takes a while before moving some text along, and Chuggaa says "Do you know how to press 'A'?" In New Super Mario Bros Wii, NCS seems to have a small bubbling issue, which requires pressing A.
    • Jon jokingly calls Jigglypuff "the deadliest of warriors" while Chugga fights Wolf in the Bonus Video. Jigglypuff ended up giving Tim a lot of trouble.
    • Interestingly enough, there are quite a few of these in NCS's solo run of MP2. For example:
      • Playing Hot Rope Jump and Tempting Fate by saying "Somebody die here!". Hilariously, the first character to get burnt is DK. On top of that, Mario was the winner of that round.
      • Likewise:

NCS: Don't let Wario win! Go Chugga![1] Go Chugga! I mean, Chugga's got this! [He doesn't got this.]

      • This comment during a game of Archer-ival:

NCS: You guys stay over there. Don't trap me against the side, now. [He gets trapped and shot two seconds later]

      • Wario's AI being a complete doofus in 2 player games. Particularly in one Sky Pilots game.

NCS: [Talking to Wario] Dude, what are you doing? Go through the rings! Do you want me to lose?

      • He even won a Tile Driver half of a second before DK would have!
    • They bring up in their LP of the first Mario Party how, canonically, Wario is the Super Star. Later, in Mario Party 2, they play as Wario for Minigame Coaster, and at the end they are told that they "shall attain Super Stardom".
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Attempted, succeeded, and lampshaded by Chuggaa, Wario's "DOH I MISSED" clip from his German VA.
    • And by extension, many people can no longer forget Chugga's infamous intro to NSMBW Episode 1-2 with the Jetsons theme song.
    • Cyber Steve.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: "D'oh, I missed!"
  • Never Live It Down:
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
    • Jon's clean sweep in Battle Mode for Mario Kart 64, due to the original E3 video being lost.
    • And with it, Tim curb-stomping the others at Rainbow Road. Luckily, he did almost as well in the new video.
  • That One Boss: Duon gave Jon and Tim a real hard time.
  • That One Level:
    • Chuggaa considers Wario's Battle Canyon to be this. Throughout the whole game, only two stars are purchased.
    • Peach's Birthday Cake is also described as one at the start.
    • NCS refers to World 2-4 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii as "the worst [level] in the first five worlds." Indeed, the Runaway Guys collectively lose 22 lives in that level, not counting murders.
    • World 7 in NSMB Wii. Especially what happens in Episode 14.
    • Level 9-3, so, so much. It wins for the most times they've had to repeat a level.
    • In Subspace Emissary, The Swamp is this for Jon and Tim eventually. Jigglypuff being there -- over two-thirds of the way through the level -- didn't help.
    • Mystery Land in Mario Party 2 is designed to work the same as Wario's Battle Canyon, and Chuggaa expresses his disinterest right from the outset.
    • The Mario Party mini game, Sneak n' Snore.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Many of Tim's actions in the later parts of Subspace Emissary are... questionable. Granted, he got distracted easily, but even then, some of his deaths seem ridiculous.
  1. It's just an DK NPC, but NCS dubbed him "Chugga"
