The Sagara Family

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Ah, the Sagara Family. An ordinary everyday family of young...very beautiful... girls... *Ahem* Our story begins with an ordinary guy named Yusuke about to start university in Tokyo who is looking for a place to stay when his father suggests that he stay with a friend of his. He has no opinion either way on the subject but, then again, he doesn't realize that the household is composed of four sisters and their widowed mother. Needless to say, living in an all-girl household is about as unfamiliar to Yusuke as he is to them, and so Hilarity Ensues.

Forget your Plot With Porn. Forget the brilliant, stirring - dare we say it - epic storylines that you have come to expect from Visual Novels for so long. This game stands tall and proud, completely unashamed of what it is:

  • Step One: Meet girl.
  • Step Two: Resolve problem that has been plaguing girl throughout the story.
  • Step Three: ????
  • Step Four: Good End!!!

With loads of characters for you to seduce, lots (lots!) of sex scenes, a relatively light-hearted story, a protagonist who is mildly aware of the fourth wall, it plays virtually every H-Game trope perfectly straight and has a lot of fun doing it.

(No, unfortunately, Sousuke Sagara is not a member of this family. Nor have they passed down the Futae no Kiwami technique through their bloodline, as appropriate as that might be given the amount of trouble they get themselves into. Honestly.)

Tropes used in The Sagara Family include:

  • Accidental Pervert: Yusuke tends to incur the wrath of Sanae for walking into the bathroom without realizing she is bathing, supposedly stealing her panties, etc.
  • All Women Are Lustful: All women in the Sagara family anyway. Lampshaded by Maria in Arisa's ending.
  • Attempted Rape: Yusuke saves Ruruka from the advances of a pedophile, or at least someone who believed her to be jailbait.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Emiru is quite the pervert...
  • Big Damn Heroes: in the game's bad ending, caused by screwing up Maria's route involves Maria being blackmailed into having sex with the Director of the school where Arisa works. Daily. For god knows how long. In the middle of a rape scene, the game depressingly cuts to credits. When the credits end, however... Yusuke cuts in, effectively stating that there's no way in hell his game is ending like this. Cue him and all of the other girls executing a glorious revenge plan.
  • Breast Sponge: With Ruruka. Goes all the way, of course.
  • Broad Strokes: See the entry for Polyamory below.
  • Bowdlerize: While the sex is uncensored and plenty of dirty language is used, the non-sexual script has actually been cleaned up a bit. For instance, in the scene where Yusuke tells Maria Ruruka knows they've had sex has her react with "Oh, no!". Her exact words could be equally accurately and more flavorfully translated as an equally distraught " Oh shit! Shit!".
  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: One of the scenarios where Yusuke injures himself and has to refrain from any strenuous activity.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: Three-Way Sex ensues.
  • Chez Restaurant: Cafe Dreadnought.
  • The Chikan: A bunch of nameless mooks in Sanae's route who pull a knife on Yusuke when he tries to intervene.
  • Christmas Cake: Maria is quite aware of she fits this status and even alludes to this trope at one point.
  • Closet Shuffle: Girls hide under desks and jump out of windows, Yusuke holds his breath in the bath...
  • Coitus Uninterruptus: The principal of the Day Care where Arisa works.
  • Cool Old Guy: The owner of Cafe Dreadnought/Sanae's boss.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Emiru
  • Disappeared Dad: Very convenient for a young man moving in with a family of four single daughters and a HotMom.
    • Actually, he's dead, but its still highly convenient.
  • Dojikko: Arisa's overly submissive nature is what gets her in trouble in the first place.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Her hair's more of a navy blue, but Emiru gives off an aura of this trope.
  • Extreme Doormat: Arisa, including in bed.
  • Fanservice: In spades.
  • Fiery Redhead: Sanae
  • Fille Fatale: Ruruka is way too sexually aggressive for a girl of her age. Averted, as Ruruka is of age to appear in a game such as this, in accordance with censorship laws prohibiting depictions of sexual activities with minors, despite what her appearance might suggest.
  • Fission Mailed: Actually done at one point to sucker you into thinking a bad ending is about occur.
  • Guide Dang It: The game's method of getting onto one route or another is dependent on a series of questions which are fairly easy to navigate... unless you're aiming for a specific girl, in which case you have no idea how close you are until you find out which girl you ended up with. Endings aren't much better - each relies on the answers to some route-specific questions, but until you've played the game a few times you won't know where these are, and some are completely arbitrary, for instance following through on an early sex scene with Ruruka will commit you to her bad ending... while it's still possible to end up with someone else.
  • Hello, Nurse!: Maria.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Maria does the H-game equivalent of this at one point to save her daughter from becoming a sex slave to a sick bastard.
  • H-Game POV Character: Yusuke is a Type III A, though most endings can make him a Type I.
  • Hot Mom: Also Maria.
  • I Banged Your Mom: We really wish there was something to say here but it speaks for itself, really.
    • Well, the protagonist actually worries about this briefly, but finds out that said mom really didn't mind.
  • Inconsistent Dub: Possible major case of this. Many parts of Ruruka's story only make sense if you assumes she's younger than she's described in the game manual, and Emiru's stated age make a later mention by her of having early memories of her parents nigh impossible, given she was two years old at best after some generous rounding. A few tweaks to the script would have cleared up any ambiguity in both cases, unless it was already present in the Japanese script. At the very least, until we know for sure, since Ruruka is regarded as an adult by the game manual and by most of the main characters and Emiru's implausible memories are regarded as canon to her route, it is indeed possible the game suffers from a Dub-Induced Plot Hole or two.
  • The Immodest Orgasm
  • Innocent Panties: Yusuke tries to convince himself Ruruka is only flashing him because she's grown up with only girls in the house. This being an H-game though...
  • Intimate Psychotherapy: How things pan out between Yusuke and Sanae.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Except not kissing and only Maria is under the influence.....though given just how much she seems to remember afterwards, she may not have been all that drunk.
  • Lighter and Softer: Meta example. This game is basically a h-game for everyone who wants to play something extremely lighthearted. The bad ending paths subvert this, though.
  • Likes Older Women
  • Lucky Charms Title: The game's Japanese name, Sagara-sanchi no Etsuraku Life ♪
  • Manipulative Bastard: The kindergarten director is, but he's also a Dirty Coward Smug Snake who gets a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from Yusuke for attempting to force either Arisa or Maria into being his sex slave.
  • Medium Awareness: In the localization at least, Yusuke is perfectly aware that he's a male protagonist in a Bishoujo game.
  • Mother-Daughter Threesome: A scene where Maria gives Arisa some practical sex-ed. Another one takes place in the epilogue, involving Maria and Ruruka ... unlike the former, this one shades into Parental Incest territory ...
  • Megaton Punch: Done by Sanae to the protagonist a few times.
  • My Girl Is a Slut: Arisa She has a hereditary case of nymphomania, hence it's justified.
  • Naked Apron: Have a look at the box art.
  • Naughty by Night: Quiet, cripplingly shy girl by day, kinky cosplay girl by night! It's Sailor Emiru!
  • No Fourth Wall: The protagonist even speaks to the audience (i.e.- the player, albeit in general terms) to explain a few things during the game.
  • Older Than They Look: Maria looks good for a woman on the cusp of 40. Ruruka is a definite case of this, given a lampshading due to censorship laws forbidding depictions of sex involving characters under the age of 18 (and her age is clearly given as 18 in the manual.)
    • The situation with Ruruka's age requires more elaboration. The English translation indicates she far younger than eighteen in several scenes (though this may be inconsistent translation from Japanese to English), but her given age (18) means she was born when Maria was 20, which means it's certainly plausible, since her eldest daughter Arisa (21) was born when Maria was 17. Add in the fact some Japanese women can look far younger than some Western women of an equivalent age, and it's even more plausible.
    • However, the biggest bit of Fridge Logic here involves Emiru (stated age 19). It's established that Emiru had a very close relationship with her father, and remembers him quite well. Ruruka, on the other hand, was born shortly before his death and thus has no memories of him. Using Emiru and Ruruka's stated ages, this would mean that Emiru would be a maximum of two years old when her father died, and that's with some generous rounding. It seems highly unlikely that Emiru would be able to hold onto the sorts of memories that she did (which include her mom and dad's cosplay antics) at such a young age.
      • And, when you combine what was stated about Emiru with the inconsistency of Ruruka, the translators could have easily solved any goofs by either making her age for having Arisa be as low as fifteen or make her 40 years old (two years older than her current age), which would have resolved any inconsistencies in the age ratio by making Emiru old enough it's plausible she retains early memories of her parents, and by extension Ruruka's exact age could be more easily reconciled with the game manual data.
  • Panty Thief: Sanae pegs Yusuke as one shortly after he moves in and some of her underwear goes missing. It was actually Ruruka, Emiru, and Maria taking them to try on.
  • Polyamory: The last few H Scenes involving multiple girls are accessed by an option to remember the days you've spent with the Sagara family. So...at some point Yusuke has slept with all of them and their mother. Where could this possibly fit into the continuity of the story? We'll tell you: we don't know.
  • Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner: A rather Badass one is uttered by your protagonist just before his Crowning Moment of Awesome.
  • Porn with Plot: More or less. We encourage you to not sweat the small stuff when playing this game.
  • Relax-O-Vision: Done to hilarious effect as metaphors are used by the protagonist to explain the very justified and very brutal asskicking he gives during his beatdown of the kindergarten director.
  • Right Through the Wall: In Maria's good end, the daughters reveal they can actually hear This and That going on downstairs.
  • Romancing the Widow: Umm...yeah.
  • Shout-Out: Yusuke walks around at night in a Tuxedo Kamen costume.
    • One of Emiru's cosplay costumes is most definitely a plugsuit.
  • Shrinking Violet: Emiru.
  • Sister-Sister Incest: In a few routes.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Two, actually, played slightly differently - Arisa in an overly polite and submissive way, while Emiru is a somewhat more anti-social variant.
  • Stalker with a Crush: The main antagonist for both Arisa and Ruruka's stories.
  • The Stinger: See Big Damn Heroes.
  • The Computer Is a Lying Bastard: Maria tells you she likes "manly men" who disdain things like housework. If you want to avoid a bad ending, don't listen to her.
    • The logic behind this is actually foreshadowed in the choker scene, where Maria says loving her is even more important than being manly. The results of the final choice ends up having little to do with this, and it requires a significant leap of intuition, but it's not utterly out of the blue.
  • Three-Way Sex: There are several such scenes, including the one noted in Caught with Your Pants Down.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Sanae and Arisa, respectively, have this sort of dynamic going on.
  • Tsundere: Sanae. Unbelievable as it may sound, it's even mildly deconstructed: Sanae fairly quickly develops a crush on Yusuke, and ends up feeling considerable angst about how her temper makes her lose control and hurt him.
  • Up to Eleven: The number of H Scenes in this game, both for each individual girl and every conceivable combination you could think of.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Ruruka, who the game script would indicate is middle school about to enter high school age (about 15-16 years of age), yet she is obviously mature to try on adult underwear worn by her noticeably older sister and apparently fit into it well enough.
